The chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, James Comer, has made the panel's first official request, asking for documents from the US President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden and brother James Biden, over their foreign business pursuits. According to CBS News, as part of his committee's probe, Comer informed Hunter, James and their then-business managers that he wants documents and communications from the Bidens, to look for any potential involvement by the president in their deals, particularly in foreign business deals "with people connected to China's Communist Party."

He has accused the family of taking "significant amounts of money from foreign companies without providing any known legitimate services."

United States President Joe Biden, 80, has dismissed concerns about his age ahead of an expected reelection campaign in 2024. Some people have raised concerns that Biden will be 82 when the next presidential election takes place. At 80, Biden is the oldest president in American history. In an interview with the PBS Newshour on Wednesday (February 8), Biden said “Watch me. That’s all I can say,” while confirming that he plans to make another bid for the White House.

“I would be completely, thoroughly honest with the American people if I thought there was any health problem — anything — that would keep me from being able to do the job,” the President said, adding, “We’ll see but I think people just have to watch me."

Joe Biden has been facing renewed calls from some leaders in the Democratic Party for a new generation of leadership. According to an Associated Press NORC poll, a majority of Democrats said they preferred that Biden not run again.

During his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Biden called for American citizens to finish the job which seemed as a prelude to the 80-year-old seeking a second term as president. "Let's finish the job, there's more to do," he said, news agency Reuters reported. Biden also touted the achievements of his first term in office, including low unemployment and the passage of climate, health and infrastructure laws.

However, he will have to face major vulnerability if he runs again. As per a Washington Post-ABC News survey, over six in ten Americans did not believe he accomplished much in his first two years in office.

On Wednesday, Dr Nadia Brown of Georgetown University said that many citizens didn't feel, or the polling said they were not that thrilled with Biden.

"They also are not really that thrilled with Donald Trump. But no one else has emerged. So I think we are just in this blah kind of wait-and-see. Perhaps fortunately for Biden, Trump has a lot more real reasons, like legal constraints, and ethical concerns, that would prohibit him from running. Whereas Biden just seems to have this likability issue, And the fact that he is the oldest American president," Dr Brown said.

"I can't think of a demographic group that he has locked up. And even die-hard steadfast Democrats like him, but they don't love him. I think that's the issue with Democrats, right. Democrats want to love their candidate, they want to feel warm and fuzzy and giddy inside, right. Republicans are more utilitarian, can this person get the job done, in the way I think the job should be done, and we are going there. So that's the uphill battle," she added, Reuters reported.

US President Joe Biden dismisses questions about age ahead of expected 2024 campaign

US President Joe Biden delivered his second State of the Union speech where he pitched for strong bipartisanship, telling the Republicans to work together, instead of “fighting for the sake of fighting”, and also called for police reform and continued support for Ukraine.

His speech aimed at reassuring a country beset by pessimism and fraught political divisions. Biden’s 73-minute speech drew strong applause from Democrats, while the Republicans heckled him over accusations of wanting to cut Social Security

Here are some of the key highlights of Biden’s speech:

On Russia and Putin: “Putin's invasion has been a test for the ages. A test for America. A test for the world. Would we stand for the most basic of principles? Would we stand for sovereignty? Would we stand for the right of people to live free from tyranny? Would we stand for the defence of democracy?"

Biden pitches ‘Made in America’: “US used to be number 1 in the world in infrastructure, but then it fell to number 13th. Now we're coming back because we came together to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the largest investment in infrastructure since President Eisenhower's Interstate Highway System”.

US support for Ukraine: "Together, we did what America always does at our best," Biden said. "We led. We united NATO. We built a global coalition. We stood against Putin’s aggression. We stood with the Ukrainian people. Tonight, we are once again joined by Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States. She represents not just her nation, but the courage of her people."

On China: "I'm committed to work with China where it can advance American interests and benefit the world. But make no mistake about it -- as we made clear last week, if China threatens our sovereignty, we will act to protect our country. And we did," he said to applause.

On police reforms and Tyre Nichols death: "We can't turn away. Let's come together and finish the job on police reform. When police officers or police departments violate the public trust, they must be held accountable. Just as every cop, when they pin on that badge in the morning, has a right to be able to go home at night, so does everybody else out there. Our children have a right to come home safely.”

Vows to veto abortion ban: "Make no mistake about it; if Congress passes a national abortion ban, I will veto it," Biden said to loud applause from fellow Democrats during his State of the Union speech, as he vowed to do everything in his administration's power to "protect access to reproductive health care" and safeguard patient safety.

On the debt ceiling: Joe Biden accused Republicans of taking US economy 'hostage' over debt ceiling “No billionaire should pay a lower tax rate than a school teacher or a firefighter. We’re still going to need oil and gas for a while. Let’s face reality. The climate crisis doesn’t care if you’re in a red or blue state. It is an existential threat and we have an obligation to our children and grandchildren to confront it.

US President Joe Biden's second state of the Union address, says 'Democracy unbowed & unbroken'

Addressing his second State of the Union address, US President Joe Biden issued a warning to China that Washington will act to protect if Beijing threatens its sovereignty, as the schism between the two nations widened over the Chinese spy balloon row.

"I am committed to work with China where it can advance American interests and benefit the world. But make no mistake: as we made clear last week, if China threatens our sovereignty, we will act to protect our country. And we did," Biden said on Tuesday night.

A diplomatic crisis arose after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken cancelled his planned visit to Beijing in protest against the presence of Chinese balloon over the US skies, which Washington claims was snooping on sensitive military sites—a charge Beijing denies.

Last week, the US military shot down the suspected spy balloon over the Atlantic Ocean, drawing a strong reaction from China which on Sunday warned of repercussions over America’s use of force against its civilian unmanned airship.

State of the Union: President talks on US unemployment, gun violence and China

The US has accused China of violating American sovereignty and international law.

“Let’s be clear: winning the competition with China should unite all of us. We face serious challenges across the world. But in the past two years, democracies have become stronger, not weaker,” Biden said before a Joint Session of the US Congress.

Biden, whose popularity has been dwindling over recent years, mentioned China over a dozen times in his speech.

Before assuming power, Biden said, the whole narrative was about how China was increasing its power and America was falling in the world.

“Not anymore. I’ve made clear with President Xi (Jinping) that we seek competition, not conflict,” he said, drawing applause from Democrats.

“I will make no apologies that we are investing to make America strong. Investing in American innovation, in industries that will define the future, and that China’s government is intent on dominating. Investing in our alliances and working with our allies to protect our advanced technologies so they’re not used against us,” he said.

China refused call with Pentagon

A US Department of Defense spokesman has claimed that China rejected a request for a secure call between Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin and his counterpart on the day the Chinese "surveillance" balloon was shot down by the American jets.

"On Saturday, 4 February, immediately after taking action to down the PRC balloon, the DOD submitted a request for a secure call between Secretary Austin and PRC Minister of National Defense Wei Fenghe," Brigadier General Pat Ryder said in a statement, referring to the People's Republic of China.

"Unfortunately, the PRC has declined our request. Our commitment to open lines of communication will continue," Ryder added.

Hours after US President Joe Biden in his second State of the Union address issued a warning to China, the country has responded. Beijing said it will 'firmly defend' its sovereignty and interest in light of Biden's stern remarks and urged the US to repair the relations. "We will firmly defend China's sovereignty, security, and development interests," said Mao Ning, the foreign ministry spokesperson. She urged Washington to 'work with China to push Sino-US relations back to the track of healthy and stable development'. Earlier, in his address to Congress, Biden had taken a swipe at Beijing, in an attempt to send a strong message to the voters. "I am committed to work with China where it can advance American interests and benefit the world," he said, adding, "But make no mistake: as we made clear last week, if China threatens our sovereignty, we will act to protect our country. And we did." Read more: ‘Make no mistake’, US will act if China threatens its sovereignty, says Joe Biden The tensions have flared between the two sparring countries in recent days after a Chinese spy balloon managed to float across the US airspace for days. It was shot down by the US military off the coast of South Carolina last week but not before it had become a major talking point across the world. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, US Secretary of State Antony Blinked cancelled his high-profile visit to Beijing, scheduled this week. Though China claims it was a civilian balloon meant for meteorological research and not any spying activity, Washington is adamant that Beijing was using it as a surveillance tool Read more: Chinese balloon was 200 feet tall with thousands of pounds of payload: US Air Force General Biden is attempting to run for the 2024 presidential elections. Allowing an allegedly 'Chinese' spy balloon to linger in the US airspace has already dented his falling popularity. Thus, using the joint Congress session as a platform, Biden set out to send a message and improve the optics. During the speech, he evoked China over a dozen times. US President Joe Biden is set to deliver his first State of the Union address after the control of the House of Representatives went to Republicans. The speech will mark the unofficial beginning of the 2024 presidential campaign season.

When will Biden deliver the State of the Union address?

The second State of the Union speech will be delivered by Biden on February 7, 2023 (Tuesday) at around 9 pm Eastern time (0200 GMT Wednesday). The speech will be live-streamed on all important US broadcast television networks and online.

The address is likely to provide Biden with his widest television audience of the year. As per the data provider Nielsen, the speech was watched by around 38.2 million people on televisions across the country last year.

With such a large audience, Biden will get a chance to change the perception of people over social spending, the Russia-Ukraine war, the debt limit and other issues as he is working to announce his re-election campaign in the weeks ahead.

The address will also work as an opporutnity to gain support among Democrats, some of whom have concerns regarding his age and other topics. In November, Biden turned 80 and if he will be re-elected, he will be 82 at the start of the second term.

What to expect from Biden's address?

Biden is likely to use the address as an unofficial beginning of the 2024 presidential campaign season and will list down the policy priorities that Congress may or may not support.

He is also expected to talk about the economic progress following the recession post-COVID-19, outline sharp contrasts with some Republican opponents' priorities and also mention the "unity" agenda items that the president believes will unite the two parties.

It takes weeks to prepare the speech, as its many drafts are exchanged between Biden, his speechwriters and other political and policy officials present in the administration.

The last speech of Biden was delivered just after Ukraine was invaded by Russia and had a heavy emphasis on Washington's response.

Who will attend the State of the Union address?

Biden will deliver the address during the joint session of Congress. All members of the Republican-controlled House and Democratic-controlled Senate are invited to the State of the Union address. It will also be attended by the members of Biden's Cabinet, the armed forces and the Supreme Court.

Earlier in January, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had formally invited Biden to deliver the address. The event will be presided over by McCarthy as Vice President Kamala Harris, who is also the Senate's president, will accompany.

The president extends the invitation to family members and other guests who will watch the address from the First Lady's view box from the balcony. Guests are also invited by the Members of Congress.

The list of guests this year will include the mother and stepfather of Tyre Nichols, who was recently beaten to death by Memphis police officers. They were sent an invitation by Congressional Black Caucus chair Representative Steven Horsford.

Russia's latest 'atrocious' attacks on Kherson, Kharkiv kills four, including two nurses

After classified documents were found at POTUS Joe Biden's home, the lawyer has discovered dozens of classified documents at Former VP Mike Pence's home. Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Biden & Pence caught in classified documents fiasco

US President Joe Biden has named Jeff Zients, a longstanding aide who supervised his massive COVID-19 response operation, as the next White House Chief of Staff. Zients previously served in the Obama administration.

Ron Klain, who has held the role for more than two years, will be replaced by Zients. A formal transition ceremony would take place at the White House the following week, as per President Biden.

For an administration that has seen minimal turnover at its top ranks and across the Cabinet, the transition is the first significant personnel change.

Zients, 56, will be entrusted with overseeing White House operations, at Biden's key two-year point, when the Democratic administration transitions from enacting ambitious goals to implementing those policies and fending off Republican attempts to undermine the accomplishments.

Zients is also in charge of guiding the White House as it grapples to control the fallout from the discovery of classified documents at Biden's home in Wilmington, Delaware, and at his former institute in Washington, which has sparked a special counsel investigation, as reported by the Associated Press.

It's critical, according to Biden, to replace Klain with someone who knows what it takes to manage a team and is as committed to getting things done.

“I’ve seen Jeff Zients tackle some of the toughest issues in government. When I was the Vice President, I first got to know him at the beginning of the Obama-Biden Administration, working closely on American Recovery and Reinvestment Act implementation as Zients was a leader at the Office of Management and Budget,” he said.
