Why does Donald Trump want people to vote twice? Is Joe Biden right in claiming that 'a black man invented the lightbulb' ? Why has Nancy Pelosi's salon visit triggered a row?

Gravitas: Did Joe Biden just rewrite history?

With the presidential candidates accepting their nominations, the biggest election of 2020 has officially begun. WION brings you a detailed report on why conventions are necessary for democracies.

Conventions: The launchpad to Presidency

Eight days of politics, promises, political blunders, awkward moments, and a lot of tokenism. WION gets you the highlights from the 8 days of the high-voltage political drama of US elections.

Who will America choose?

Large venues and outdoor spaces allow for social distancing that helps prevent the spread of the coronavirus ravaging the United States ahead of the November 3 presidential election.

States are turning to stadiums, drive-thrus and movie theatres as safe options for in-person polling places amid the coronavirus pandemic and fears about mail-in ballots failing to arrive in time to count.

The US general election on November 3 is also expected to include voting at NBA arenas around the country -- part of an agreement owners made with players to combat racial injustice.

Election Day is expected to bring a surge in mail-in voting, but some people may feel more comfortable casting their ballots in person amid concerns about recent mail delays following a series of operational changes at the US Postal Service and President Donald Trump stoking unfounded claims of voter fraud.

Several states conduct their elections almost entirely by mail, and mail-in voting is well established in others. In-person voting will be back in November, but rather than only using schools, churches and public buildings like usual, clerks also are permitted to set up drive-thru or outdoor polling places.

The idea to use large spaces for in-person voting started in Kentucky, where Louisville's only option in the June primary was an exposition centre at the state fairgrounds. The primary set turnout records, largely driven by mail-in voting.

In November, all active Vermont voters will get a mail-in ballot for the November election, and lawmakers also have allowed for outdoor and drive-thru voting systems.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden met with the family of Jacob Blake, the Black man whose shooting by police in Wisconsin in August sparked a new surge of civil unrest around the United States, on Thursday.

The private meeting, which took place in a building at the Milwaukee airport, came at the start of a trip by Biden to the state. Biden and his wife Jill met with four members of Blake's family, including his father, Jacob Blake, Sr., the Biden campaign said.

He landed in Kenosha just 72 hours after Trump travelled to the same city and did the stark opposite thing.

Biden did not mince words in slamming rioters who had masqueraded as protesters.

"But none of it justifies looting, burning or anything else. So, regardless how angry you are, if you loot or you burn, you should be held accountable as someone who does anything else, period. It just cannot be tolerated, across the board," he said.

On the contrary, the incumbent US president, Donald Trump, found himself in another soup when he asked voters to vote not once but twice -- once by mail, and once in person.

"But send in your ballots, send them in strong, whether it's solicited or unsolicited. The absentees are fine, we have to work to get them, you know it means something. And you send them in, but you go to vote and if they haven't counted it, you can vote. So, that's the way I view it," he said.

Biden is not far behind.

He on Thursday said that a black man created the light bulb, 'not a white guy named Edison' during a speech while in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Biden made the remark at the Grace Lutheran Church while speaking with community leaders.

In footage shared to social media, Biden addressed instances of racial inequality in institutions, including the education system.

Coming back to Trump again, he loves to play golf. But he doesn't like Nancy Pelosi salon sessions.

In the United States, the health of the President and the presidential candidate has become a subject of debate. People are questioning if Joe Biden is mentally and psychologically unfit for office, and there are also rumours that Donald Trump is suffering from mini-strokes.

Joe Biden is known to be a gaffe machine. Biden's many public blunders have earned him the title 'sleepy Joe'. The 77-year-old is now the official democratic presidential nominee and the questions around his cognitive abilities have only increased.

Biden is being called 'mentally unstable'. In question is a report that was recently submitted to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

This report was about alleged election interference by foreign powers seeking to raise doubts about the health of both the presidential candidates. The report titled, 'Russia likely to denigrate health of US candidates to influence 2020 election', was sent to the DHS public affairs office in July.

The draft mentioned that the Russian media had been publishing reports on the poor mental health of Biden. This report, like many products from DHS intelligence bureau, was intended to be distributed to federal and state enforcement agencies but it was delayed for further review, and then completely withheld.

Now, this information has been leaked and it has prompted scrutiny of alleged political influence at the DHS.

The DHS says it did not publish the report because it was "poorly written" and it lacked the necessary context and evidence for broader dissmenation. The Democrats are pushing for a probe.

In the meantime, concerns are being raised about Donald Trump's health as well. Rumour mills have been abuzz with the news that the 74-yeard old POTUS is suffering mini-strokes.

It all started with a report published by Matt Drudge, an American political commentator and an influential media personality. He runs a website called the Druge Report.

During 2016, he used every bit of his influence to back Donald Trump, but now he has turned against Trump. Recently, he published a column which suggested that Trump had been suffering mini-strokes. As proof, he provided some images of Donald Trump dragging his right leg.

Dr. Sean Conley, the US President's physician has categorically denied all such claims, but Trump is known to be his own spokesperson. So, he put out a tweet, "It never ends! Now they are trying to say that your favorite President, me, went to Walter Reed Medical Center, having suffered a series of mini-strokes. Never happened to THIS candidate - FAKE NEWS. Perhaps they are referring to another candidate from another Party!"

From mini strokes to mentally unstable: US presidential nominees' health in jeopardy?

Donald Trump urged the locals to go ahead and vote twice in the upcoming US Presidential elections, due in November.

A critic of the mail-in voting, Trump urged people to make sure that their vote has been cast by voting twice. "Based on the massive number of Unsolicited & Solicited Ballots that will be sent to potential Voters for the upcoming 2020 Election, & in order for you to MAKE SURE YOUR VOTE COUNTS & IS COUNTED, SIGN & MAIL IN your Ballot as EARLY as possible. On Election Day, or Early Voting," he said.

The 'suggestion' was made in a series of three tweets, and following its new-formed policy of labelling misinformation, Twitter quickly placed a notice on the last two tweets that read, "This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about civic and election integrity. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible."

The tweets read, "go to your Polling Place to see whether or not your Mail In Vote has been Tabulated (Counted). If it has you will not be able to Vote & the Mail In System worked properly. If it has not been Counted, VOTE (which is a citizen’s right to do). If your Mail In Ballot arrives"

"after you Vote, which it should not, that Ballot will not be used or counted in that your vote has already been cast & tabulated. YOU ARE NOW ASSURED THAT YOUR PRECIOUS VOTE HAS BEEN COUNTED, it hasn’t been “lost, thrown out, or in any way destroyed”. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!," he continued in his third tweet.

However, White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany was quick to dismiss the fact that Trump had just asked his supporters to take part in an illegal activity. McEnany said that Trump "does not condone unlawful voting."

Trump's critics believe that this was yet another try by Trump to decrease the rising popularity of the mail-in voting system that majority of the US states are planning to opt for the upcoming elections, due to the pandemic.

While Joe Biden says he has full confidence in USPS' services, Trump and his supporters feel this is yet another way of Biden undermining Trump by rigging the election results.

Twitter places notice on Trump's tweets of double voting

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is set to assail the incumbent US president's, Donald Trump, stewardship of the coronavirus-ravaged economy on Friday as both campaigns kick into high gear with less than two months to go to the November 3 US election.

The US Labour Department is also slated to release its monthly jobs report, a key indicator of economic health that will provide some insight into the state of the country’s recovery from the downturn sparked by COVID-19.

Trump has seized upon the monthly reports as evidence that the recovery has been a dramatic one. But last month’s report showed some slowdown in employment growth, as the United States added 1.8 million jobs in July after a record-smashing June when the nation posted 4.8 million. The unemployment rate fell to 10.2 per cent.

Economists have said the August report likely will show the labour market faltering further.

Biden will deliver remarks from his home base of Wilmington, Delaware, after his busiest campaign week in months. Trump has no public events planned.

While the Labor Day holiday typically marks the beginning of a more intense phase of the White House race, both Biden and Trump got a head start in the past week with a flurry of activity following their back-to-back party conventions.

Biden traveled to Pittsburgh and Kenosha, Wisconsin, both in battleground states that help decide the election, to address the ongoing and sometimes violent protests over racial injustice and police brutality.

Trump also visited Kenosha -- a flashpoint city where anti-racist demonstrators have clashed with Trump supporters after the police shooting of a Black man -- and made stops in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, another key state.

Both campaigns have launched new ad blitzes in those swing states, with Biden hammering Trump`s handling of the pandemic and Trump hewing to his “law and order” theme criticizing rioters and protesters.

The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that the race has remained relatively stable over the last several weeks, with Biden holding a seven percentage point over Trump nationally.

Joe Biden set to criticise Trump on US economy as campaign intensifies

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden put himself squarely in the middle of U.S. tumult over racial injustice and police brutality on Thursday, visiting strife-torn Kenosha, Wisconsin, and speaking by phone with the Black man shot there by police.

US: Joe Biden meets Jacob Blake's family during visit to Kenosha

Two days after the US President Donald Trump visited Kenosha in Wisconsin, his opponent in the upcoming US Presidential elections Joe Biden has also visited the city.

However, unlike Trump, Biden met the family of Jacob Blake, the black father shot multiple times by a white police officer in Wisconsin in an incident that sparked days of violent unrest.

Joe Biden is visiting Kenosha with his wife Jill Biden. The announcement was made yesterday by Biden's team. "Vice President Biden will hold a community meeting in Kenosha to bring together Americans to heal and address the challenges we face," a statement from his team read.

The Democratic nominee met the relatives of Jacob Blake at a private meeting at the Milwaukee airport. The gathering included Jacob Blake's father and his three siblings.

This is Biden's first visit to the city in his 2020 presidential campaign.

Two days ago when Trump visited the city, he did not meet Blake's family as reportedly the family wanted their lawyer to be present at the meeting, but Trump found the request to be very "inappropriate".

"I thought it would be better not to do anything where there are lawyers involved. They wanted to have lawyers involved and I thought that was inappropriate so I didn't do that, but I did speak with the pastor -- was a fine man, wonderful man -- and I think we had a great talk, and I may at some point do that, but they did have a lawyer that wanted to be on the phone and I said no, that's inappropriate but I gave my best regards," Trump had said during his briefing.

The US President Donald Trump has announced plans to cut federal funds for the "lawless" cities, including Seattle, Portland, New York and Washington.

Donald Trump has signed a memo on Wednesday for the same, which was released by the White House. “My Administration will not allow Federal tax dollars to fund cities that allow themselves to deteriorate into lawless zones," Trump said.

As per the memory, Attorney General William Barr has been asked to list out the “anarchist jurisdictions” that “permitted violence and the destruction of property to persist and have refused to undertake reasonable measures.”

Blasio, later, took to Twitter to respond to the memory saying, "While @realDonaldTrump spent this year hiding from COVID-19, New York City led the fight back. Further, the White House Budget Director Russell Vought has been asked to issue guidance within 30 days “to the heads of agencies on restricting eligibility of or otherwise disfavoring, to the maximum extent permitted by law, anarchist jurisdictions in the receipt of Federal grants.”

Donald Trump threatens to cut federal funding for 'lawless' cities

The US President Donald Trump is quite famous for his Tweets, among other things. Trump often announces official decisions and his personal opinions through his Twitter account. However, Joe Biden has now asked him to 'get off Twitter'.

In an address in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, Joe Biden, who is running against Donald Trump in the upcoming US Presidential elections, asked Trump to concentrate on safely reopening schools, rather than tweeting.

"Mr President, where are you? Where are you? Why aren’t you working on this? We need emergency support funding for our schools and we need it now. Mr President, that’s your job,” Biden said.

The Democratic leader, who has earlier opposed reopening schools, said reopening schools in a safe way is a national emergency.

“That’s what you should be focused on now, getting our kids back to school safely, keeping schools safely able to remain open once they open. Not whipping up fear and division, not inciting violence in our streets," he said.

Biden has also accused Trump of inciting violence in kenosha, Wisconsin by showing up in the city univited, even after the local government and experts repeteadly advised against it, saying Trump's visit would only promote hatred and violence and diminish resources in an already grieving city.

“Get off Twitter and start talking to the congressional leaders in both parties. Invite them to the Oval Office. You always talk about your ability to negotiate. Negotiate a deal. A deal for somebody other than yourself,” he added.

Dwayne Johnson, Kamala Harris & other celebs mourn Chadwick Boseman's demise

When the United States votes, each and every country, be it Washington's ally or its bitter rival, sets their eyes on it. The November 3 presidential election will also provide clarity on ties between the US and other countries.

After the end of the Cold War era, the relations between India and the United States have started to become warm irrespective of whether a Republican or a Democrat is in power. Similarly, whether Donald Trump gets re-elected or Joe Biden becomes the president, ties between the two nations are likely to remain unaffected if not better. This article, therefore, looks to decode, who will be a more suitable president for New Delhi. It will also look at what has or hasn't been done in the past four years under Trump when it comes to India.

Did India-US ties flourish under Trump?

Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi consistently stressed their fondness for each other. Their bonhomie resulted in first-ever 2+2 dialogue between both the countries at defence and foreign ministry levels. Despite Trump lauding Modi on various occasions, the US president undertook actions against India's preference, which includes actions on Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), H-1B visa and attempts to mediate on Kashmir conflict.

During his tenure, Trump described India as a "tariff king" and removed it from the list of countries with the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), an arrangement to help developing countries with trade. The US president demanded "equitable and reasonable" treatment to US goods in the Indian market. In response, New Delhi also imposed retaliatory tariffs. Various talks were held between New Delhi and Washington, however, no settlement has been reached so far. Trump also raised the issue of high tariffs by India on US motorcycle companies, which were then brought down from 75 per cent to 50 per cent. However, according to Trump, this reduction is "still unacceptable".

Trump's support to 'America First' policy during the 2016 election campaign really appealed to the Americans, though it really received a lot of flak from a lot of economists and supporters of free-market economies. During the tenure of Trump, Indian IT giants in the US, like Wipro and Infosys, were forced to hire more Americans. Due to this, these IT firms rejected a lot of applications and visa renewals as rejection rate on new visas jumped from 6 per cent in FY16 to 44 per cent in FY20 and on renewals rose from 4 per cent in FY16 to 21 per cent in FY20, according to a report by Nomura. H-1B visa allows companies in the US to hire foreign workers for highly specialised roles and since Indians have generally been the biggest beneficiaries of this system, a shift in policy under Trump meant that aspirants from India were hurt the most. In June, Trump extended his earlier order to suspend foreign workers visa till the end of this year in order to provide American jobs in the wake of coronavirus pandemic that led to an adverse effect on several economies. To add insult to injury, the US president signed an executive order in early August that barred US federal agencies to hire foreign workers.

The Indo-US defence ties have strengthened since the era of junior Bush and administrations succeeding him remained on that trajectory. The bilateral defence trade between both the countries was less than US$ 1billion in 2008 and it jumped to US$ 18 billion in 2019, writes Observation Research Foundation, an India-based think tank. The article further adds that US arms exports skyrocketed by more than 550 per cent in the period between 2013-17 as compared to the previous five years. Trump also discontinued Obama administration's freeze of giving unmanned systems to India as New Delhi became Washington's "the first non-treaty partner to be offered an MTCR Category-1 Unmanned Aerial System". Arms exports to India also became easy as Trump passed executive orders to accord India Strategic Trade Authorisation-1 (STA-1) status, which was earlier enjoyed by only two Asian countries, South Korea and Japan.

Other than this, despite Trump's mediation offers in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the administration has stayed away from criticising India's internal matters. Be it abolishing Article 370, Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests, the US president has repeatedly said that he trusts India's democratic system. It has also seen in Trump's administration that Washington is more comfortable in engaging with New Delhi, than Islamabad and Beijing.

What has Biden in store for India?

"Fifteen years ago, I was leading the efforts to approve the historic civil nuclear deal with India. I said that if the US and India became closer friends and partners, then the world will be a safer place," Biden said, in his address to Indian-American community on India's Independence Day. The watershed moment of the Indo-US ties was the signing of the nuclear deal in 2009 under Obama's presidency. Experts believe that Biden's foreign policy expertise played a significant role in finalising this agreement which means New Delhi will remain a key priority for Washington. During his Independence Day address, Biden also said that he will continue to stand with India on the threats it faces on the border, implying a check on Pakistan and China.

Biden has also said "there can be no tolerance for terrorism in South Asia, cross-border or otherwise," another reference warning Pakistan to not try taking the US for a ride on terrorism.

However, when it comes to Pakistan, when Biden was the vice president, he received Hilal-i-Pakistan, country's second-highest civilian honour. Also, from 2013-16, the US's aid to Pakistan was consistently over USD 630 billion which was brought down to USD 392 billion in 2017 by Trump and remained at similar levels in 2018. So, it remains to be seen whether Biden administration become benevolent to Pakistan than the current administration or not.

Trump is floating a conspiracy theory that China wants Biden to be the president. However, none of the statements from Biden or his campaign has suggested that Beijing can expect any favours from the Democratic presidential candidate. "A Biden administration will also work with India to support a rules-based and stable Indo-Pacific region in which no country, including China, is able to threaten its neighbours with impunity," his campaign has said.

The Indians were the most impacted with Trump's sudden suspension of the H-1B visas and Biden has clarified that the suspension will "not be in this administration". Recognising the contribution of foreign workers, Biden also said if voted to power, giving citizenship to undocumented immigrants will be a priority, including 1.7 million from AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) community.

There were eyebrows raised when Biden's campaign website in a policy paper criticised India's Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), saying they compromise with India's credentials of a secular and a multi-religious democracy. The criticism was not just limited to CAA, but extended to Kashmir as well. But to imply that Indo-US ties under Biden will get affected because of these issues is reading too much.

So, Indians should read this article and let Americans take a call. After all, New Delhi and Washington know that straining ties with the other will not only be irrational but harm world order too. And, Biden and Trump are likely to be aware of it.

Joe Biden or Donald Trump: Who is/ will be better for India?

Not much has changed even after three months of the brutal killing of George Floyd, which was followed by nation-wide protests. This time, the state of Wisconsin is on fire.

On august 23, Jacob Blake, a black man, was shot in the back by white police officers in the city of Kenosha. Blake's three young sons were in the back of the car and they witnessed their father being shot.

Blake's fiancée, who was at the scene of shooting, pleaded with the officers to let the kids out but her cries were ignored.

"That you treat somebody like that - who's not armed, not giving you no problems, he ain't throw no punch or nothing. What you mad because you tased him and he didn't bend, he didn't break, he pulled it out? So you felt intimidated cause you had a gun, so you used it!? You overused it! That's what you did," Blake's fiancée said.

After being shot in the back multiple times, Blake has had a surgery and doctors claims his condition is now stable.

That's why we have to respond and we know that we can't remedy the white supremacy and the systemic racism that is built into all of our systems in just a couple of years or with any package of legislation. But that doesn't mean we don't act," he said.

Lebron James, a basketball player, also reacted to repeated instances of police brutality against the African-American community in the US. "If you're sitting here and telling me that there was no way to subdue that gentleman (jacob blake) or detain him or just before the firing of guns, then you're sitting here and lying to not only me, you're lying to every african american, and every black person in the community. Because we see it over and over and over," he said.

However, the US President Donald Trump has not reacted to the shooting of Jacob Blake. His competitior, Joe Biden, on the other hand, called for an immediate, full and transparent investigation into the shooting.

Black Lives Matter: After George Floyd, Jacob Blake becomes next victim of police brutality

All eyes are on the upcoming Republican event where Donald Trump will be nominated as the presidential candidate.

Republican National Convention 2020 to kick-off in North Carolina

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has said he would follow public health advisors' advice if they called for a national shutdown if the coronavirus had not subsided by the time he takes office.

"I would be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives. We cannot get the country moving until we control the virus," Biden said in an interview broadcast Sunday night on ABC News.

He even said he would not shy from a national shutdown if scientists said it was necessary.

"I would shut it down," he said.

The former vice president's remarks came in his first joint interview with vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris. The pair accepted their party's nominations during a virtual convention last week. On Monday, Republicans begin their convention to nominate Trump and Vice President Mike Pence for a second term.

When asked about Trump's recent assertion that the only way he'd lose was if the election were rigged, the Democratic challenger dismissed any notions that the incumbent president wouldn't leave the White House voluntarily if he loses.

"The American people will not let that happen," he said.

"No one's going to allow that to happen."

The first Black woman on a major party national ticket, Harris said she and Biden are on the same page on race amid the nation's ongoing reckoning with systemic racism.

"There are real racial disparities that are rooted in systemic racism," Harris said, noting wealth gaps and the disproportionate effects of COVID-19 on Black and Hispanic communities.

Biden said they "have the same value set" and are "on same exact page about what the possibilities are right now."

"I signed on to bills that were about great ideas to fix the problem," Harris told ABC, arguing that she and Biden "are completely aligned on " making sure everyone has health care."

Joe Biden says he'd shut down economy if scientists recommended

President Donald Trump will draw on all his showman's instincts at the Republican convention starting Monday to get Americans to look beyond his handling of the coronavirus crisis and return him to the White House for a second term.

Facing anger over the pandemic and ensuing economic turmoil, Trump badly trails his Democratic opponent Joe Biden in the polls.

But the Republican insists he can replicate his surprise 2016 win -- and hopes the convention, where he will be nominated to seek reelection November 3, will launch the comeback.

Due to COVID-19, the convention will be largely online, the same as the Democrats' unprecedented convention last week. But technical aspects will be only the start of the tradition-wrecking changes brought to the Trump party.

Unlike standard conventions, where the candidate stays mostly out of the way until the last night, Trump is expected to be in the limelight all four days.

His family, which has had an unusual amount of influence and access at the White House during his tumultuous first term, will also be omnipresent.

There'll be First Lady Melania Trump's speech in the Rose Garden on Tuesday and addresses by the president's children, including right-wing firebrand son Don Jr, daughter-advisor Ivanka and daughter-in-law Lara Trump.

On Monday, the convention kicks off with Republican delegates meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, to hear Trump speak.

Trump's climactic speech on Thursday, which the Republicans hope to follow with fireworks, will be delivered at the White House itself -- a show of power trampling over the custom of separating political campaigns from the office of president.

In yet another move raising eyebrows, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a big Trump supporter, will make a speech on his behalf while conducting an official trip to Israel.

It's often said that the Democrats' deep Hollywood connections give them the upper hand in the showbiz side of politics. They put on a well-honed production last week, culminating with Biden's emotional pledge to be an "ally of the light" after what he called the "darkness" of Trump's first term.

Trump, though, also has years of experience in television, quite apart from his decades as a celebrity property developer. So, reports that he has brought in two of the producers on his old reality TV show "The Apprentice" to help out come as no surprise.

- God, jobs and guns -

For all his bullishness, Trump faces an uphill struggle against Biden, who is tapping into massive unhappiness with the president's handling of the pandemic, unrest over racial inequality and fear of longterm economic damage from the coronavirus shutdown.

Beyond bread and butter issues, Trump's abrasive style, his habit of insulting people he doesn't like in public, his demonization of journalists, and almost total inability to talk to Democratic leaders has left the country divided and exhausted.

After the Democrats used their convention to promise national healing, Trump sought to turn the issue on its head, accusing his opponents of being the ones going negative.

"They spent four straight days attacking America as racist and a horrible country that must be redeemed," he said Friday. "Where Joe Biden sees American darkness, I see American greatness."

Asked by Fox News in an interview aired Sunday what to expect at the convention, Trump said "something that is going to be very uplifting and positive."

Trump's number one message is that the economy, reeling from the shock of the nationwide shutdown earlier this year, will come back soon.

He told Fox News he will be promising tax cuts and "the best economy ever."

But the sunny tone is likely to get heavy competition from Trump's other favorite themes -- his often outlandish claims that Democrats want to take away Americans' firearms, unleash anarchy in the streets, encourage mass illegal immigration, and even repress religious freedom.

Earlier this month, Trump told a crowd that Biden will "hurt the Bible, hurt God" -- a statement that quickly drew outrage and ridicule.

Asked by Fox News whether a kinder, gentler kind of Trump might be seen in a second term, the president said: "I'd like it to be calm, too."

But "I have to fight back," he said. "If I don't fight back strong, I would be sitting here right now."

- God, jobs and guns - For all his bullishness, Trump faces an uphill struggle against Biden, who is tapping into massive unhappiness with the president's handling of the pandemic, unrest over racial inequality and fear of longterm economic damage from the coronavirus shutdown. "Where Joe Biden sees American darkness, I see American greatness." Asked by Fox News in an interview aired Sunday what to expect at the convention, Trump said "something that is going to be very uplifting and positive." Trump's number one message is that the economy, reeling from the shock of the nationwide shutdown earlier this year, will come back soon. He told Fox News he will be promising tax cuts and "the best economy ever." But the sunny tone is likely to get heavy competition from Trump's other favorite themes -- his often outlandish claims that Democrats want to take away Americans' firearms, unleash anarchy in the streets, encourage mass illegal immigration, and even repress religious freedom. Earlier this month, Trump told a crowd that Biden will "hurt the Bible, hurt God" -- a statement that quickly drew outrage and ridicule. Asked by Fox News whether a kinder, gentler kind of Trump might be seen in a second term, the president said: "I'd like it to be calm, too." But "I have to fight back," he said. "If I don't fight back strong, I would be sitting here right now."

Showman Trump hopes Republican convention will change America's tune

Donald Trump loves recounting how everyone told him he wouldn't win in 2016, but he now has his work cut out to prove the doubters wrong a second time on November 3.

- Not a popular man -

Pollsters are more wary than four years ago, not least because this time the variables are off the chart.

Election season got into gear just as the coronavirus pandemic began sweeping through the United States, so far killing more than 170,000 people and pushing the previously booming economy off a cliff.

This has also been a summer of mass protests against racism, as the US faces a historic reckoning over racial injustice and police brutality.

And due to coronavirus restrictions, the challenger Joe Biden has barely been out of his Delaware home.

Despite the volatility, there is broad agreement that Trump has no chance of winning the popular vote, just like in 2016.

The Democrats' strongholds of California and New York alone give them millions of extra votes. Also, Trump is a historically unpopular president, with approval ratings jammed in the low 40s.

American University politics professor David Barker rates Trump's chances of a popular vote win at "maybe 1:100."

But US presidents are chosen via the state-by-state electoral college, not overall national tallies.

And in 2016, Hillary Clinton won nearly three million more votes than Trump, yet still lost the electoral college by a whopping margin. The Democrat got just 227 delegates to 304 delegates for Trump.

- Can he turn the tide? -

Trump often claims to have private polls showing him headed for a second term.

"Right now we're leading in so many polls that they refuse to put out," he said again Thursday.

The latest average of public, national polls from fivethirtyeight.com, however, has Trump down at about 43 percent to Biden's 51 percent.

The Economist's model, updated daily, currently gives Biden an 88 percent chance of winning the presidency, while Trump has just 12 percent. Its electoral college counter predicts a Biden landslide of 343 to Trump's 195, with only 270 required to win.

Republicans talk optimistically about a steep economic recovery in the next two months and maybe a dramatically early release of a coronavirus vaccine.

Others muse over the possibility of Biden self-sabotaging. He is renowned for awkward gaffes and has so far faced almost no difficult questioning from journalists.

An even less predictable factor is outside interference or a so-called "October surprise," like the Russian plot to destabilize Clinton's 2016 campaign and offer help to the Trump camp.

Allan Lichtman, an American University history professor whose "13 Keys to the White House" prediction method has worked accurately in every election since 1984 -- including 2016 -- says none of this can save Trump.

"A bolt from the blue is always possible, but it has not changed a prediction before," said Lichtman, whose "keys" look at structural political considerations, not polls.

"Even an improving economy is unlikely to change a key. We have an election-year recession and growth has been so negative that one more quarter is incredibly unlikely to reverse the call," he said.

- Roadmap -

Trump's campaign generals look at the map and still see numerous routes where an upset win here or there would put their man safely over the top.

Trump's collection of safe states alone is far from enough to reach the needed 270 electoral college votes.

So, as nearly always, the election will come down to voters in a handful of big swing states and maybe a scattering of smaller ones.

"We all need to win either Wisconsin or Michigan or Pennsylvania to win this thing again," Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien told reporters.

"If we win any of these three states and the states the president won in 2016, Joe Biden stays in his basement."

Barker says Trump really needs to keep hold of pretty much all the swing states that secured his 2016 win -- Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina and Ohio.

"He could lose one of any of those states and be fine, but not two."

In current polling, however, Biden leads in all those battlegrounds and even threatens in places like Texas where Trump won easily in 2016.

Asked to characterize Trump's path through the mounting electoral minefields, Barker answered: "narrow."

Can Trump thread the electoral college needle again? It'll be tough

The Democrats are all set for upcoming US elections as their convention ended with fanfare and fireworks. The highlights of Day 4 was the acceptance speech given by now presidential nominee Joe Biden. Now all eyes are on the Republican event where Donald Trump will be nominated as the presidential candidate.

The Republican National Convention 2020 to be mostly virtual affair

Incumbent US President Donald Trump's sister called him "cruel" and apparently confirmed her niece Mary's previous allegations that he had a friend take his SATs to get into college, according to audio clips secretly recorded by the latter.

The transcripts and audio excerpts have exclusively been obtained by the Washington Post from Mary Trump, author of a recent tell-all book about the US president -- "Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created The World's Most Dangerous Man." Some 950,000 copies were sold the day of the memoir's release, with the White House branding the memoir as a "book of falsehoods".

Mary has, in her book, said that Donald Trump is unfit to be the president and has voiced support for his rival Joe Biden. She revealed to the Post that she had secretly taped 15 hours of face-to-face conversations with Maryanne Trump Barry, the president's older sister, in 2018 and 2019.
