US election 2020: Trump prepares to seize the national spotlight for R.N.C.

The US President Donald Trump has claimed that the results of the Presidential elections, to be held on November 3, could take months.

The elections have been in the controversy due to the concerns raised by Trump for mail-in ballots, as he believes the local post office service — United States Postal Service (USPS) — is not ready to handle such a huge turnout of mail-in votes.

To add on to the controversy, Trump has now stated that according to him the election results cannot be deteremined for weeks, or months.

"You'll never have an election count on November 3," Trump said in a speech to the Council of National Policy, a conservative activist group.

"You're not going to be able to know the end of this election, in my opinion, for weeks, months, maybe never," he said.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the USPS is expecting almost 50 million votes to be cast by mail this year. However, the old organisation has received almost no support from the US President who claims this will be a huge embarassment for the country. "We're not prepared for this, 51 million ballots. It will be a tremendous embarrassment for the country," he said. "This is a very serious problem for a democracy."

Trump, who has been accused several times for colluding with Russia in the 2016 elections, believes his opposition party is stressing over relying on the USPS for voting day as it is allegedly an easy way to manipulate the 2020 elections.

While he is adamant on calling this to be a systemic problem, local voters and experts seem to believe this is his reaction to the poll resulkts that suggest he is trailing behind in the race against Joe Biden.

However, Bill Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center has also stated a similar concern but due to cyberattacks. "We need to prepare as a nation that the election will not be decided on November 3," he said.

He added that it is not the USPS he is worried about, but the meddling by cyber criminals throughout the month on November, and especially on November 04 and 04. "I'm worried about ransomware attacks. I'm worried about cyberattacks. I'm worried about the inability of people to vote because of cyber penetrations and ransomware."

You may never get election results: Trump warns against vote count

The Democrats have wrapped up their National Convention, Republicans start theirs next week. While Joe Biden is promising to be a President for all, President Donald Trump's troubles are only mounting. Palki Sharma Upadhyay has a report.

Gravitas: U.S. Elections: Promises and Politics

Joe Biden has built his political career by betraying the promises he makes. He is blaming Donald Trump for 'Cloaking America in Darkness', but was once accused of doing the exact same thing. Palki Sharma Upadhyay tells you how Biden is no saint.

Gravitas: Why Joe Biden is no saint

The Republican Party is to make its case next week for four more years of President Donald Trump after his Democratic opponent Joe Biden wrapped up his party's convention with a vow to end what he called a "chapter of American darkness."

Accepting the Democratic nomination, the 77-year-old Biden said the United States was facing a "life-changing election" in November.

"The current president has cloaked America in darkness for much too long. Too much anger. Too much fear. Too much division," the former vice president said in his acceptance speech in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

"May history be able to say that the end of this chapter of American darkness began here tonight as love and hope and light joined in the battle for the soul of the nation," he said.

The 74-year-old Trump fired back on Friday, accusing Democrats of holding the "darkest, angriest and gloomiest convention in American history."

"Where Joe Biden sees American darkness, I see American greatness," he said.

Vice President Mike Pence also took aim at the four-day Democratic convention which was rife with attacks on Trump's character and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic which has left more than 174,000 people dead in the United States.

"I found not just those words by Joe Biden last night, but so many of the speeches at the Democratic national convention were so negative," Pence said on "CBS This Morning." "They presented such a grim vision for America."

"Joe Biden last night said that democracy's on the ballot, that character's on the ballot," Pence said. "The economy's on the ballot.

"The economy is coming back," the vice president said. "The only real threat to our economy is a Joe Biden presidency."

'WE MUST COME TOGETHER'

The Republican convention begins in North Carolina on Monday, and like the Democratic event it is going to be mostly online because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Pence is to address the convention on Wednesday and Trump is going to accept the Republican nomination in a speech at the White House on Thursday, shrugging off criticism over the use of the presidential residence for campaign purposes.

Trump dismissed Biden's acceptance speech in a tweet.

"In 47 years, Joe did none of the things of which he now speaks. He will never change, just words!" Trump said, alluding to Biden's long record in politics as a senator from Delaware and Barack Obama's vice president for eight years.

Unlike four years ago, when Hillary Clinton emerged as the Democratic nominee after a bitter primary battle with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, the Democrats appear more united this time around.

Sanders, who also challenged Biden for the nomination and remains the favorite of the progressive wing of the party, has unabashedly thrown his support behind the nominee this time.

"We must come together, defeat Donald Trump and elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next president and vice president," Sanders said. "My friends, the price of failure is just too great to imagine."

Also making the case for Biden at the party convention were three former presidents -- Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Obama -- along with a host of Democratic luminaries and Republicans such as former secretary of state Colin Powell who are disenchanted with Trump.

Biden's White House run -- his third -- features a historic first with his choice of a black woman, California Senator Harris, to be his running mate.

The latest RealClearPolitics average of national polls has Biden with a 7.4 point advantage over Trump and slight leads in several of the battleground states which are a key to victory in the Electoral College.

Republicans to make case for Trump after Democrats endorse Biden

U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden and closely allied Democratic groups raised $70 million during their four-day convention this week, Biden`s election campaign said on Friday.

The convention`s broadcasts drew 122 million views across 15 digital platform livestreams and also attracted 85.1 million to television broadcasts, the campaign said in an emailed statement.

Republican President Donald Trump’s campaign and closely allied groups pulled in $165 million during the typically sluggish political fundraising month of July, more than Democratic rival Joe Biden’s $140 million, Trump`s campaign said earlier this month.

That result allows Trump to enter the final stretch of the U.S. presidential campaign with a slim, but intact, cash advantage.

Trump and party-backed groups now have more than $300 million to spend on advertisement, door-knocking organizers and other political expenses, they said, compared with Biden’s $294 million.

The virtual Democratic convention wrapped up on Thursday night with Biden accepting his party`s nomination during a speech in which he accused Trump of a chaotic and divisive presidency.

The convention`s closing night attracted roughly 24.6 million primetime television viewers, the largest audience of the week, according to data from the Nielsen ratings agency.

Biden and allies raised $70 million during Democratic convention, campaign says

When Joe Biden was elected as one of the youngest US senators in 1972, one of the first letters that he received was from Mumbai, with the sender having the same last name as his.

About five years ago, the Democratic Party's presidential nominee learned that there are five Bidens living in Mumbai, but is probably yet to make a connection with them.

The 'Biden from Mumbai', then known as Bombay, had congratulated Biden on his election as the senator from Delaware and told him that they were related to each other.

Biden, then 29, wanted to follow up on the letter and get in touch with the 'Biden from Mumbai'. However, his family and active life in politics meant that this wish remained a wish, something he still wants to fulfil nearly five decades later.

The wish may have remained unfulfilled, but the 77-year-old Biden never misses a chance to narrate the 'Biden from Mumbai' story when he meets Indian-Americans and the Indian leaders.

The former vice president assures them that he too has an India connection, however, distant it might be.
In his address to the Bombay Stock Exchange, Mumbai, on July 24, 2013, during his maiden visit to India as the Vice President of the US, he went off-script to narrate his story of the 'Biden from Mumbai'.

"It's an honour to be back in India and to be here in Mumbai. Off script for a second here, I was reminded - I was elected to the United States Senate when I was a 29-year-old kid back in 1972, and one of the first letters I received and I regret I never followed up on it. Maybe, some genealogist in audience can follow up for me, but I received a letter from a gentleman named Biden - Biden, my name - from Mumbai, asserting that we were related," Biden had told the audience amidst peals of laughter.

"Seriously. Suggesting that our mutual, great, great, great, something or other worked for the East India Trading Company back in the 1700s and came to Mumbai," Biden said.

A few years later at another speech in Washington DC, Biden said that their forefathers were same, who worked for the East India Company and visited India then.

"He (Biden from Mumbai) went back to our mutual great, great, great grandfather, 1848, who was a British captain in the East India Tea Company. And he married I believe an Indian woman. And he settled in India," Biden said in his address to the US India Business Council on September 21, 2015.

"And so I was thinking about it, if that's true, I might run here in India for office. I might be qualified (to run for elected office in India). But I've never followed up on it (the letter from Biden from Mumbai)," Biden told the Mumbai audience in 2013, who could not stop laughing at it.

"But now that I'm back for the multiple times, I'm going to follow up to find out whether there is a Biden and whether we're related. I hope he's in good standing if we are," he said, evoking bouts of laughter from the audience.

In the Washington DC event hosted by US Indian Business Council, Biden said that a day after his Mumbai speech, a journalist gave him a list of five Bidens living in Mumbai.

"The next day the press, I guess trying to prove that I was probably making this up - because I never followed up. It was right after I got elected, and then some things happened in my family, and I never followed up. One reporter stood up and gave me the names of five Bidens in Mumbai," he said.

"So, show me more respect," Biden has told the Washington DC audience while asserting his Indian connection
"You know what I mean? I didn't realise I had so many... And I haven't actually followed up and embarrassed the Bidens in Mumbai. But the point is, it makes it even clearer what a small, small world this is and how this global economy is suited for, quite frankly, the two largest democracies in the world," Biden said in 2015.

"No one has been tougher on big banks and the gun lobby. No one has been tougher on calling out the current administration for its extremism, its failure to follow the law, it's failure to simply tell the truth. Kamala and I both draw from our families. That is where we get our strength. For Kamala, it is Doug, and their families. For me, it is Jill, and ours," Biden said.

Introducing herself as the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants at the virtual convention on Wednesday, Harris fondly remembered her Chennai-born mother who she said taught her two daughters to "be conscious and compassionate about the struggles of all people" and to believe that "the fight for justice is a shared responsibility."

That is where we get our strength. For Kamala, it is Doug, and their families. For me, it is Jill, and ours," Biden said. Introducing herself as the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants at the virtual convention on Wednesday, Harris fondly remembered her Chennai-born mother who she said taught her two daughters to "be conscious and compassionate about the struggles of all people" and to believe that "the fight for justice is a shared responsibility." Let American darkness end here: Joe Biden formally accepts US Democratic Presidential nomination

Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Indian-origin Senator and vice presidential nominee of the Democratic Party Kamala Harris, has said that his wife has been fighting for justice every day for the people and will make a "great" vice president of America.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Emhoff, 55, was raised in Los Angeles where he works as an attorney in the entertainment industry. Currently, he is on leave from his company to campaign for his wife.

He made two public appearances on Thursday, a day after Harris, 55, made history by becoming the first Black person to be nominated as the vice presidential candidate of a major political party.

"She's gonna make a great vice president. I am so confident of that. She and Joe are gonna do such an amazing job," said Emhoff, who has been married with the Indian-origin Senator for six years.

If Biden and Harris win the November presidential elections, Emhoff, a divorcee with two kids, would be America's first Second Gentlemen.

"Every day, Kamala has been fighting for justice on behalf of the only client she's ever had: the people," he said at one of the events.

At both the events, LGBTQ caucus and grassroots fundraising event, he urged Democrats to join Biden's campaign online, and double-check that they are registered to vote.

"We need to do more than win. We need a mandate. We need a mandate that shows this so-called president doesn't define who our country is and who we should be," he said.

The grassroots fund raiser was hosted by Kim and James Taylor, where he talked more about how it felt to watch Harris deliver her speech last night.

On their life during the COVID-19 pandemic, Emhoff said, "It's been tough. As Jim (Taylor) said, he was marooned.

We've been marooned in DC both working from home, but she's kept up both Zoom and phone calls with the kids."

He said Harris' entire career had been "remarkable and inspiring".

"I was right there. I got to see it," he said.

"When she took on (judge) Brett Kavanaugh, I've never been prouder. She's never been afraid to back down from a fight," he said.

Kavanaugh went on to become a US Supreme Court Judge.

"Last night ? I can't even tell you how that felt. I got to watch it with Joe and Jill and the whole Biden family. It was kind of a culmination, Kim, of all those moments. Just standing on the side of that stage with the Bidens watching her do this, it was incredible," he said.

"We've all come together to do this with the Biden family. It's just been incredible," Emhoff said.

Making his first appearance after the historic night, Emhoff said he never expected that he would be doing this.

"Time for some real talk first. Being out here on the presidential campaign trail talking about Joe and Kamala is not something I've ever really expected to be doing," he said.

If Joe Biden is elected US president, American policy toward North Korea is likely to see less emphasis on personal dealings with leader Kim Jong Un, and more focus on allies and working-level diplomacy, campaign advisers and former officials say.

That also means there would be no more "Little Rocket Man", exchanging love letters or summit pageantry.

The incumbent US president, Donald Trump, has said he would make deals with North Korea "very quickly" if re-elected on November 3.

Pyongyang officials, however, have said while Kim still has a good relationship with Trump, they have to look ahead to a time when Trump isn't president.

Last year, North Korea lashed out at Biden, calling him a "rabid dog" that should "be beaten to death" for comments seen as disparaging of Kim.

Biden, who has a solid lead in most opinion polls, cited those threats in January when he said he would not meet with Kim unless unspecified preconditions are met.

Trump became the first sitting US president to meet with a North Korean leader when he held a summit with Kim in Singapore in 2018 -- although this happened after months of trading threats and insults where Kim was "Little Rocket Man" and Trump a "deranged US dotard".

The two leaders met twice more, and exchanged what Trump called "beautiful letters", but failed to resolve a standoff over North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Biden told The New York Times he would not continue the personal diplomacy with Kim, calling the meetings a "vanity project" that should only happen if coupled with "an actual strategy that moves the ball forward on denuclearisation."

Biden would not shut the door to diplomacy, but instead "empower negotiators and implement a sustained and a coordinated effort with allies and partners" to pressure and incentivise North Korea to denuclearize, while also drawing attention the country's human rights abuses in a way that has been lacking in current US policy, the Biden adviser said.

Biden was vice president under Barack Obama, and some parts of his policy would likely be similar to Obama's "strategic patience", which sought to isolate North Korea and not offer diplomatic rewards for its provocations.

Biden's promise to work more closely with allies may be complicated by South Korean President Moon Jae-in's push for more engagement with North Korea and looser sanctions, while downplaying human rights issues.

Kim has also made significant progress in advancing his military capabilities since Biden last held office, successfully testing North Korea's largest nuclear bomb and missiles capable of striking anywhere in the United States.

The US arms control community is likely to have a strong voice in a Biden administration and will argue it is time to accept the idea that North Korea is now a nuclear power.

"Trump failed to protect America": Joe Biden speaks at DNC 2020

Billionaire businessman Michael Bloomberg has warned that America is in danger of being lost under President Donald Trump's leadership and urged Americans to vote for Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris in the November presidential election.

Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, had entered the 2020 Presidential race but suspended his campaign and endorsed former Vice President Biden, the current Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States.

Addressing the final day of the virtual Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, Bloomberg backed Biden and the Indian-American vice presidential nominee Harris.

"Let's put an end to this whole sorry chapter in American history and elect leaders who will bring integrity, stability, sanity, and competence back to the White House. Joe and Kamala, go get 'em. For all of us," he said.

Criticising Trump for not believing in facts, Bloomberg said the current president sees immigrants as enemies and white supremacists as allies. Trump has also failed the American people catastrophically with his bad job as the US President, he said.

"To me, elections are about people. And the two people running for president couldn't be more different. One believes in facts. One does not. One listens to experts?the other thinks he knows everything. One looks forward?and sees strength in America's diversity. The other looks backwards?and sees immigrants as enemies and white supremacists as allies," he said.

Attacking Trump for his failed leadership amid the devastating COVID-19 pandemic and a struggling economy, Bloomberg said the current health crisis is much worse under his leadership.

"When confronted with the biggest calamity any president has faced in the modern era, Donald Trump spent the year downplaying the threat, ignoring science, and recommending quack cures, which let COVID-19 spread much faster than it should've, leaving hundreds of thousands needlessly sick or dead. He has failed the American people, catastrophically," he said.

Recalling his words that New Yorkers know a con when we see one, Bloomberg said he is not asking Americans to vote against Trump because he's a bad guy but is urging everyone to cast their ballot against him because he's done a bad job.

Alluding to Trump's track record of driving his companies into bankruptcy six times, Bloomberg said Trump has always left behind customers and contractors who were cheated and swindled and stopped doing business with him.

He said if small business owners and their employees would not rehire or work for someone who ran a business into the ground, or whose reckless decisions put people in danger, "and who spends more time tweeting than working?!? then "why the hell would we ever rehire Donald Trump for another four years?!?

Bloomberg said Trump's economic plan was to give a "huge tax cut to guys like me who didn't need it, and then lie about it to everyone else.

"Well, Joe will roll back that tax cut I got so we can fund things our whole country needs, like training for adults who have lost jobs. And making college more affordable. And investing in American research and development so that the products of tomorrow are made here today, by American workers,? Bloomberg said.

Biden's economic plan will create clean energy jobs that help fight another crisis that Trump is ignoring: climate change, Bloomberg said, adding that Biden will rebuild America's crumbling roads and bridges, something "Trump has incessantly talked about doing. But in the last three and half years, he hasn't done anything. What a joke!"

As Barack Obama tore into US President Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention, his successor hit back with a barrage of angry tweets, saying the former president spied on his campaign and got caught.

Trump went live with his tweeting as Obama and Indian-origin Senator Kamala Harris delivered their speeches at the 2020 Democratic National Convention on Wednesday.

"HE SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN, AND GOT CAUGHT!" Trump said in an all-cap tweet.

Barack Obama's rare rebuke raises Donald Trump's hackles

Kamala Harris accepted her historic vice presidential nomination Wednesday after being introduced by three of her closest female relatives, a symbol of the central role women have played in her trailblazing life and could have in November's election.

Known as "Momala" to her two step-children, the 55-year-old US senator and daughter of immigrants has embraced her status as the first woman of color on a major party ticket, and outlined a future of possibilities if she and presidential candidate Joe Biden defeat President Donald Trump.

But in the most important speech of her political life she also turned to the women that lifted her up.

Speaking on the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment which gave American women the right to vote, Harris represents the extraordinary potential for members of a critical Democratic constituency -- women of color -- who have benefited from the battles waged by those who came before.

"These women inspired us to pick up the torch, and fight on," Harris said in her remarks to the convention.

Harris has repeatedly stressed she puts family first, and for her, the woman whose shoulders she stands on is her late mother Shyamala, a highly respected cancer researcher who emigrated from India.

Shyamala met her future husband -- Harris's Jamaican-born father -- while demonstrating for civil rights on the streets of Berkeley, California.

"Oh, how I wish she were here tonight, but I know she's looking down on me from above," Harris said.

When Harris's mother gave birth to her in Oakland, "she probably could have never imagined that I would be standing before you now, speaking these words: I accept your nomination for vice president of the United States of America."

'YOU ARE A ROCK'

Three relatives invited her to accept the nomination: her younger sister Maya Harris; niece Meena Harris; and Ella Emhoff, the daughter of Harris's husband Douglas Emhoff, whom she married in 2014 -- and has just taken a sabbatical to support his wife's campaign.

"You're a rock, not just for our dad, but for three generations of our big, blended family," Ella said in a video montage played during the virtual convention.

"You showed me the importance of public service, and made sure I grew up surrounded by smart, strong, ambitious women every day," added niece Meena, a lawyer and author of a children's book focusing on the life of her mother and aunt.

Women will play a critical role in this year's election, as suburban women in particular have begun leaning away from Trump. Polls show most Americans approve of Biden picking Harris as his running mate.

Harris appeared confident in a plum-colored suit, sometimes holding up her two fists as she urged Americans to "fight with conviction (for) the America we know is possible."

But the speech that would normally be delivered to a packed house, with traditional confetti or roars of applause, was made in a crowdless room in Wilmington, Delaware, without any of the stagecraft of a typical political convention.

The entire event has been moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic, and when Biden came out to congratulate her, it was at a safe but awkward social distance.

Harris will square off with Trump's Vice President Mike Pence during a debate on October 7, and if sparks fly, she'll be prepared, Harris's close friend Stacey Johnson-Batiste told CNN on Wednesday.

"Kamala is fierce, and she's a fighter," she said.
