Meet the Bidens: A look at the America's new 'first family'

In a sombre ceremony at Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday, President-elect Joe Biden honoured the 400,000 Americans lost to Covid-19 as he arrived in Washington on the eve of his inauguration.

The sundown commemoration came just hours before President Donald Trump was due to leave the White House and hand over a country in crisis. The ceremony, spearheaded by Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris from the base of the Lincoln Memorial, marked the federal government's first official nod to the staggering death toll from the pandemic.

Biden, who himself has suffered deep personal tragedy of his own and who is known for his public displays of emotion, has stressed the need to unite the country after President Donald Trump's chaotic four years in office.

"We must remember. It's hard sometimes to remember, but that's how we heal. It's important to do that as a nation," Biden said in brief remarks to kick off a tribute that was to include observances in cities across the country.

Inauguration eve is normally a time of massive crowds gathering in the capital, but Biden, joined by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, were almost alone on the empty National Mall due to Covid restrictions and heightened security after the deadly riot at the US Capitol.

As darkness fell over the nation's capital, 400 electric lamps lining the sides of the Reflecting Pool were illuminated to honour the 400,000 lives lost, followed by gospel singer Yolanda Adams' performance of the song "Hallelujah," then a moment of silence in memory of the COVID-19 dead.

"Though we may be physically separated, we the American people are united in spirit," Harris said separately.

A hospital nurse from Michigan, Lori Marie Key, sang "Amazing Grace" before Biden took to the podium. About 4 miles (6.5 km) from where Biden appeared, the bells of the National Cathedral were tolled 400 times after he spoke.

On the Mall's grassy expanse, some 200,000 flags have been planted to represent the absent crowds at the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday.

Trump, who has not appeared in public for a week, broke days of silence with a pre-recorded farewell video address.

For the first time, he asked Americans to "pray" for the success of the incoming administration, a change from months spent persuading his Republican followers that the Democrats cheated their way to election victory.

The United States surpassed 24 million COVID-19 infections and 400,000 lives lost from the virus on Tuesday. The country has recorded more than 200,000 new cases and 3,220 deaths on average over the last seven days.

Among the other landmarks participating in the lighting ceremony were the Empire State Building in New York City and the Space Needle in Seattle, Biden's inaugural committee said in a statement. The committee also said it was encouraging Americans to light candles in their windows and churches to ring their bells in a show of unity.

It was a sight to watch as US President-elect Joe Biden accompanied by wife Dr. Jill Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris along with husband Doug Emhoff were spotted at the National Mall in Washington DC for a COVID Memorial honouring and remembering American lives that were lost during the pandemic. US Inauguration Day 2021 Live updates: Biden set to be next US President

Looking at the Mall’s pool of reflection were President-elect and Vice President-elect with their spouses. At the commemoration, Joe Biden said, “To heal we must remember. It’s hard sometimes to remember but that’s how we heal. It’s important to do that as a nation… Let us shine the lights in the darkness… and remember all whom we lost.”

Kamala Harris had followed and said, “Tonight we grieve and begin healing together. Though we may be physically separated we the American people are united in spirit. And my abiding hope, my abiding prayer, is that we emerge from this ordeal with a new wisdom: to cherish simple moments, to imagine new possibilities, and to open our hearts just a little bit more to one another.”

As America hopes for a new future and hope for change, we can also reflect on changes that were hinted by the way of Kamala Harris and Dr Jill Biden’s sartorial choices. Dr. Biden chose a purple wrap coat and paneled dress from the fall 2021 collection of Jonathan Cohen, one of a new generation of American designers who is championing sustainability and responsible design. The color of the coat and mask was made from fabric scraps from Cohen’s studio. Also, the colour purple is what you get when you mix red and blue -- of the American flag.

Meanwhile, Vice President-elect Harris wore a camel coat by Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, a Black designer. On his runways, Jean-Raymond has addressed the erasure of African American narratives in popular culture via a three-part series of collections that he called “American, Also,” which included one show at Weeksville, a black neighborhood in Brooklyn.

At 78, Joe Biden to become the oldest US president to take oath

Known to be a Republican supporter, country singer Garth Brooks has surprised one and all after it was announced on Monday that he would be performing at the inauguration ceremony for US President-elect Joe Biden.

Brooks join a bevvy of stars like Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez who would be performing at the ceremony.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced on Monday Brooks name in the list of performers for the swearing-in ceremony for the 46th president of the United States.

The Committee said future first lady, Dr Jill Biden, personally reached out to Brooks. The singer reportedly joked that he’ll likely be "the only Republican at the ceremony."

The singer added that his presence at the ceremony was to bring people together, not politics.

On a zoom call announcing the news, Brooks told reporters that he found the recent violence that broke out at the US Capitol on January 6 to be "disturbing and sad."

Outgoing President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump will not be attending the ceremony on January 20th.

Interestingly, Brooks had also performed at Barack Obama’s 2008 swearing-in ceremony.

"I've played for every president there is, since Carter, with the exception of Reagan. This is an honour for me to get to serve... and it's one of the things that, if my family is around, no matter who the president-elect is, it's an honour to be asked," he told reporters during a virtual press conference.

Earlier, last week the Inaugural Committee announced that Tom Hanks will host a 90-minute special that will lead into the ceremony.
While many fans were excited to learn that the star would be offering up his talents for the ceremony, there are others who are not sure if Brooks has made the right move.

"Apparently, Garth Brooks has some friends in high places too!" said a Twitter user. "Looking forward to his performance during our virtual inauguration celebration, for our very real President, Biden and Vice President, Harris."

"Me reading garth brooks is playing at @JoeBiden's inauguration," said another alongside a video clip of a man jumping and clicking his heels together.

Another said, "Awesome. Love Garth!"

However, not everyone seemed to be happy with the news.

"Garth brooks playing the Biden inauguration as a republican, putting a new spin on 'friends in low places,'" wrote one follower.

"Biden isn't good," said another. "We're divided because people like Garth Brooks were willing to be divided when they were told to be."

There were some who claimed to have 'unfollowed' the musician following the announcement.

US inaugurations: High drama and sore losers

As America anxiously gears up for the inauguration of 46th President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday, natives of Tamil Nadu’s Thulasenthirapuram-Painganaadu are also making preparations. This village in the Southern Indian state’s Tiruvarur district is the ancestral home of Kamala Harris’ maternal family. While the inauguration ceremony is scheduled after 10 pm IST, the village will commence their celebrations almost 12 hours in advance, at 10 am IST on Wednesday.

A special Puja (prayer ritual) and Archana (offerings for the deity) are to be held at the Sri Dharmasastha Temple in the village, which would be followed be celebrations, bursting of crackers and distribution of ladoos (sweets). Over 200 persons are expected to take part in the celebrations according to the village head.

Going by engravings on the temple wall, Kamala’s relatives who live in India had donated a small sum to the temple fund in 2014. The engraving bears the name Kamala Harris, with the donation sum Rs. 5000 (about 70USD) written beside it. According to the village head, they consider Harris’ family their own people and take pride in it, adding that, they had performed Pujas and erected banners in prominent parts of the village when they knew she was Biden’s running mate.

“Besides the celebrations, we are also planning to get a mini-forest ready in the near future. This is being planned on a small patch of land adjoining the temple” J.Suthakar, the village head and the President of the local Rotary chapter told Zee Media.

Cheering on from their respective homes in Chennai and Delhi, will be Dr. Sarala Gopalan and Dr. Gopalan Balachandran, the maternal aunt and uncle of Kamala Harris. While the family members had initially hoped to be in the US for the Inauguration, they shelved their plans owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We haven’t spoken, but she always has our wishes, surely she has her hands full given the situation in their country” Dr. Balachandran, Kamala Harris’ uncle and senior journalist told Zee Media.
