Based on Frank Herbert's classic novel<em> Dune,</em> Villeneuve's second film in the franchise maintains the same tonality that one saw in the first film yet makes it larger and bigger. It is truly astonishing to see Villeneuve's vision coming to light on the big screen (I watched it on IMAX) and to think the scale at which this was thought.&nbsp;</p>

Cinematographer Greig Fraser's stunning camera work makes the deserts look limitless, enticing and dangerous at the same time. You almost need to catch your breath at the visuals that are shown on screen. Because to think it and putting it on paper is one thing, but implementing it on the big screen is another.&nbsp;</p>

They are now on the run and have the Fremen tribe guarding them. At the behest of Fremen's leader- Stilgard (Javier Bardem) Jessica takes the place of the Reverand mother and sips the water of life. The process puts the child in her womb initially at risk, something that first the herd is shocked to learn about but eventually as Jessica gains consciousness, she finds herself talking to her unborn child.</p>

<p>Jessica also yields power and is ambitious of Paul's capabilities- something he is not sure of. Stillgard thinks he is the next messiah - &nbsp;Lisan al Gaib- although Paul himself assures them and his love Chani (Zendaya) that he only wants to fight alongside the Fermens and not lead the pack.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
With multiple characters and layers added to each one of them, it is difficult to know who is grey and who is completely black. Paul wants to be with Chani and convinces her that traveling to the south of the planet would jeopardise their relationship. It is Chani who initially assures him that things wont change and that he has a calling that he needs to listen to. Yet Chani's perspective changes when Paul ultimately declares himself as the Messiah and yields power, silencing others to kneel and obey him.&nbsp;</p>

It is ultimately Paul's story of growing up from a boy to a mature man who leads a tribe to war, and Chalamet ably shows that transition. Ferguson and Zendaya complement Chalamet equally well. While the entire narrative is focused on revenge, succession and spiritual power, the moments between Chalamet and Zendaya- where the two sit on the dunes and talk - are the most interesting and intimate. I wish they had shown more of the two and their romance.&nbsp;</p>

I did have a problem with the way the film romanticises oppression and conservatism. West has continually spoken against veils and orthodox Muslim culture but <em>Dune</em> somehow glamourises it. It may be presenting a familiar story and making a commentary on the politics of the world at present but ultimately it fails to give any solution to the oppression and fanatism. Perhaps it will be addressed in the next part of the franchise.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
If you loved Dune then you will also like its sequel. It does up the ante for cinema worldwide with its scale and vision.&nbsp;</p>

Dune: Part Two review: Timothée Chalamet headlines a visually stunning coming of age drama

<p>Once upon a time, in the corporate kingdom of Disney, a trend emerged that aimed to redo animated classics in live-action. However, upon closer inspection, the futility of this endeavour reveals itself, like a fairy godmother's pumpkin carriage turning back into a humble vegetable. In the realm of animation, the artists' brushes create a world where imagination knows no bounds. Talking animals, singing teapots, and magical spells effortlessly transport us into realms uncharted. But when the magic is transposed into live-action, the result can be as underwhelming as a prince who forgets the royal ball's address. The very essence of animation lies in its ability to transcend reality's constraints. In the hands of talented animators and artists, anthropomorphic creatures and fantastical settings flourish, making us believe in a world beyond our own.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yet, when the boundaries of reality are imposed upon these ethereal tales, the results can be as awkward as a fish out of water attempting ballet.</p>

<p>All this to say: you have my permission not to watch Disney's live-action remake of <em>The Little Mermaid.</em> While the original dazzled with its beautifully imaginative underwater kingdom, talking sea creatures, and soundtrack brimming with enchanting melodies, Rob Marshall's remake is a soulless cash grab (I suspect it is not going to grab a lot of cash, either) utterly devoid of any hint of charm of visual whimsy. Instead of vivid colours, here you have drab greys. Even the green and blue of Ariel's getup are so washed out that it looks as if she emerged from a muddy puddle rather than a freaking ocean.</p>

There was an opportunity to reimagine the narrative with a fresh perspective and address certain aspects that could benefit from a contemporary lens. But here, the remake is slavishly faithful to the original.</p>

<p>It follows the story of Ariel Halle Bailey), a mermaid princess, yearns to explore the human world despite the command of her her father Triton, the Sea King (Javier Bardem). She rescues human Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) from a shipwreck and falls in love with him. To explore the human world, she strikes a deal with the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to become human for three days and win Eric's love.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No, <em>The Little Mermaid</em> is not worth watching. It is a deeply cynical attempt to capitalise on nostalgia, aiming to squeeze every last drop of profit from a cherished tale without investing the effort to honour its essence. This is a corporate product, through and through. It lacks the heart, the imagination, and the artistic vision that breathed life into the animated classic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Also, these films, the Disney live-action remakes, are always made by filmmakers who fail to instill any personality to the narrative, and more often than not try to redo the film almost frame-by-frame. The result, like <em>The Little Mermaid</em> here, is always a pale imitation.</p>

<p>Still, I hazard there are people, particularly young kids, who will enjoy this thing. And that is fine. But even they will be better served by re-watching or watching the animated original.</p>

In the realm of animation, the artists' brushes create a world where imagination knows no bounds. Talking animals, singing teapots, and magical spells effortlessly transport us into realms uncharted. But when the magic is transposed into live-action, the result can be as underwhelming as a prince who forgets the royal ball's address. The very essence of animation lies in its ability to transcend reality's constraints. In the hands of talented animators and artists, anthropomorphic creatures and fantastical settings flourish, making us believe in a world beyond our own. Yet, when the boundaries of reality are imposed upon these ethereal tales, the results can be as awkward as a fish out of water attempting ballet. All this to say: you have my permission not to watch Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. While the original dazzled with its beautifully imaginative underwater kingdom, talking sea creatures, and soundtrack brimming with enchanting melodies, Rob Marshall's remake is a soulless cash grab (I suspect it is not going to grab a lot of cash, either) utterly devoid of any hint of charm of visual whimsy. Instead of vivid colours, here you have drab greys. Even the green and blue of Ariel's getup are so washed out that it looks as if she emerged from a muddy puddle rather than a freaking ocean. The Little Mermaid story The story is pretty much the same. This is where the movie could have actually done something worthwhile and different. There was an opportunity to reimagine the narrative with a fresh perspective and address certain aspects that could benefit from a contemporary lens. But here, the remake is slavishly faithful to the original. It follows the story of Ariel Halle Bailey), a mermaid princess, yearns to explore the human world despite the command of her her father Triton, the Sea King (Javier Bardem). She rescues human Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) from a shipwreck and falls in love with him. To explore the human world, she strikes a deal with the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to become human for three days and win Eric's love. <p>Character posters of the upcoming film ‘Dune’ released today and we must say all actors look real good in their form. The upcoming sci-fi tentpole has been in the news ever since it was announced and curiosity around it has always remained the same even after the film hit a deadlock over the pandemic restrictions et al.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac and a whole lot of other actors, the film directed by Denis Villeneuve is an update of Frank Herbert’s novel which was turned in into a 1984 movie by David Lynch.</p>

<p>‘Dune’ stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Sharon Duncan Brewster, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen and David Dastmalchian, with Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.</p>

<p>The character posters revealed today include those of Timothee Chalamet who stars as Paul Atreides; Zendaya as Chani; Ferguson as Lady Jessica; Momoa as Duncan Idaho; Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides; Bardem as Stilgar; Brolin as Gurney Halleck; and Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.</p>

<p>Though not specified or confirmed, it seems likely given Sorkin's fascination with politics and the exercise of power that the script will focus on an incident in 1953 when Ball met voluntarily with the lead investigator for the House of Un-American Activities Committee regarding the fact that she had registered to vote in 1936 and listed her party affiliation as Communist. <p>Javier Bardem is deep in talks to play King Triton in 'The Little Mermaid'&nbsp;-- but the Spanish actor has already gone under the sea for his new ocean documentary premiering at the Toronto film festival.</p>

<p>In 'Sanctuary,'&nbsp;cameras follow Javier and his brother Carlos to Antarctica as they learn about -- and drum up support for -- Greenpeace's campaign to save the southern ocean from human activity.</p>

<p>At one point a visibly alarmed Bardem clambers into a tiny two-man submarine to scoop samples of specimens damaged by climate change and fishing trawlers from the sea bed.</p>

<p>"Thank God I'm not claustrophobic ... it's like a Kinder Egg!" he told AFP in Toronto. "But I was in safe hands."</p>

<p>The Oscar-winning actor says he was raised by his mother to "always speak out on what you think is right, no matter what you do as a job," and in recent years that has meant taking up environmental causes.</p>

<p>He addressed the United Nations in New York last month, telling governments the "world is watching" efforts to create a global ocean treaty, and warning that "we can't afford to get it wrong."</p>

<p>But he would also like to see Hollywood doing more with its "potential reach of millions of people" to foster change.</p>

<p>In recent talks with Rob Marshall for Disney's live-action remake of 'Little Mermaid,'&nbsp;Bardem says he urged the director to add environmental messages to the film.</p>

<p>Bardem -- who won an Academy Award for 2007's 'No Country for Old Men'&nbsp;-- admits this is not his only motivation for signing up for 'Little Mermaid.'&nbsp;He and wife Penelope Cruz have two children including a six-year-old daughter.</p>

<p>"I will immediately become her hero forever," he joked. "Daddy will be a hero! Just for that, it's worth it."</p>

<p>But becoming a parent has also hardened his resolve to take up the cause.</p>

The film also marks the entry of Oscar winner, Javier Bardem, as the main antagonist, Captain Salazar. This film also marks the return of Orlando Bloom after missing out in the previous part. The film is directed by Norwegian director duo of Joachim R&oslash;nning and Espen Sandberg and is titled Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tale in US and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar&rsquo;s Revenge in India and a few other countries.</p>

<p><strong>What&rsquo;s It About</strong></p>

<p>In order to free his father (Will Turner) from the curse, Henry Turner decides to hunt the &lsquo;Trident of Poseidon&rsquo; which most believe doesn&rsquo;t exist. Helping him in his voyage is Carina Smythe and Captain Jack Sparrow. On their trail are Captain Barbossa, British Navy and the army of the undead, headed by Captain Salazar, who has a score to settle with Captain Jack Sparrow.</p>

<p><strong>What&rsquo;s Hot</strong></p>

<p>You know there is something wrong with a film when you enjoy a new character&rsquo;s antics more than that of the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. New entrant to the franchise, Javier Bardem as the undead Captain Salazar is the pick of the lot, closely followed by Geoffrey Rush&rsquo;s Captain Hector Barbossa.</p>

<p>There is something about Javier Bardem. Every time he appears on screen you are left awestruck, even if he&rsquo;s a mere spectator. He owns the screen the way very few can. The Spanish dialect he adapts for his character of the &lsquo;Pirate Killer&rsquo; is the film&rsquo;s highlight and speaks volumes about his talent. Of course his character is helped by some brilliant special effects.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, the main antagonist of the first part and since then an unlikely ally of Captain Jack Sparrow, is spot on. His character in this one feels like an extension of this month&rsquo;s initial release Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2&rsquo;s fan favourite Yondu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smythe is breathtakingly beautiful and an able performer. She is very easy on eyes from the first scene till the last. If they are planning to reboot the film next then Brenton Thwaites as Will Turner&rsquo;s son Henry Turner is a good bet to take it forward.</p>

<p>Jack Sparrow&rsquo;s crew, toplined by Kevin McNally as Gibbs, provide ample amount of humour. In fact there were only a few good laughs in the film, one being &lsquo;the public execution&rsquo; scene.</p>

<p>Special Effects by Lucas Films is one of the best in recent times and may get the film an Oscar Nomination. Film has a high usage of background score and it helps in a big way, however, the iconic Jack Sparrow theme was underused.</p>

<p>Having said that, the film scores most in the cinematography department, for which we have Paul Cameron to thank. Besides that, there are fun action scenes, particularly the climax of the film which looks extremely beautiful and is bound to give you an adrenaline rush. In fact it saves the film from being a major disappointment.</p>

<p><strong>What&rsquo;s Not</strong></p>

<p>You know a ship is in danger if its Captain is incompetent. That&rsquo;s where lies the problem of this film. It breaks my heart to see the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, becoming a caricature of itself. It felt like Depp was sleepwalking through the film. There was just no effort on his part. His half-hearted and disinterested performance makes the film a rather unpleasant watch. And it was not just his performance but the character he plays, too, had nothing to do in the film. His was probably the most unimportant and irrelevant character in the film even though he was made to be the main lead.</p>

<p>Even in earlier films, Jack Sparrow has always been this clumsy, goof ball but he always had a flair of smartness that helped him have the last laugh even against the biggest of his enemies. But here not once did he seem like a hero (except for a five minute flashback scene as Young Jack Sparrow), every damn time he is saved by either Henry Turner, Captain Barbossa or his own crew, and in fact the &lsquo;Trident Hunt&rsquo; in the film is headed by Carina Smythe. So what exactly was he doing in the film? I have absolutely no idea. His was a hollow, soul-less character and served no purpose whatsoever to the film&rsquo;s plotline. Captain Jack Sparrow had no relevance to the story at all. Period.</p>

<p>Storywise, the film had no novelty factor, with multiple sub-plots that tend to get confusing after a point. The pace was so slow at times, that even at an odd 129 minutes of its runtime, it might exhaust you.</p>

<p><strong>What To Do</strong></p>

<p>In my opinion Jack Sparrow shouldn&rsquo;t have returned as this was an insult to his legend. After watching the film, my reaction was similar to that of Henry Turner, when he sees Sparrow for the first time &ndash; disappointed. Watch the film solely for the majestic Javier Bardem and his performance as the undead Captain Salazar. In fact it won&rsquo;t be wrong to call the &lsquo;lifeless&rsquo; Captain Salazar, as the &lsquo;life&rsquo; of the film. I give it a generous 2.5 stars, half extra for Bardem and that well executed, resounding climax.</p>

Jack Sparrow's character has almost no relevance in the new film's narrative

Johnny Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow with Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, six years after his last outing. The film also marks the entry of Oscar winner, Javier Bardem, as the main antagonist, Captain Salazar. This film also marks the return of Orlando Bloom after missing out in the previous part. The film is directed by Norwegian director duo of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg and is titled Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tale in US and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge in India and a few other countries. What’s It About In order to free his father (Will Turner) from the curse, Henry Turner decides to hunt the ‘Trident of Poseidon’ which most believe doesn’t exist. Helping him in his voyage is Carina Smythe and Captain Jack Sparrow. On their trail are Captain Barbossa, British Navy and the army of the undead, headed by Captain Salazar, who has a score to settle with Captain Jack Sparrow. What’s Hot You know there is something wrong with a film when you enjoy a new character’s antics more than that of the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow. New entrant to the franchise, Javier Bardem as the undead Captain Salazar is the pick of the lot, closely followed by Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Hector Barbossa. There is something about Javier Bardem. Every time he appears on screen you are left awestruck, even if he’s a mere spectator. He owns the screen the way very few can. The Spanish dialect he adapts for his character of the ‘Pirate Killer’ is the film’s highlight and speaks volumes about his talent. Of course his character is helped by some brilliant special effects. Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, the main antagonist of the first part and since then an unlikely ally of Captain Jack Sparrow, is spot on. His character in this one feels like an extension of this month’s initial release Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’s fan favourite Yondu. Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smythe is breathtakingly beautiful and an able performer. She is very easy on eyes from the first scene till the last. If they are planning to reboot the film next then Brenton Thwaites as Will Turner’s son Henry Turner is a good bet to take it forward. Jack Sparrow’s crew, toplined by Kevin McNally as Gibbs, provide ample amount of humour. In fact there were only a few good laughs in the film, one being ‘the public execution’ scene. Special Effects by Lucas Films is one of the best in recent times and may get the film an Oscar Nomination. Film has a high usage of background score and it helps in a big way, however, the iconic Jack Sparrow theme was underused. Having said that, the film scores most in the cinematography department, for which we have Paul Cameron to thank. Besides that, there are fun action scenes, particularly the climax of the film which looks extremely beautiful and is bound to give you an adrenaline rush. In fact it saves the film from being a major disappointment. What’s Not You know a ship is in danger if its Captain is incompetent. That’s where lies the problem of this film. It breaks my heart to see the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, becoming a caricature of itself. It felt like Depp was sleepwalking through the film. There was just no effort on his part. His half-hearted and disinterested performance makes the film a rather unpleasant watch. And it was not just his performance but the character he plays, too, had nothing to do in the film. His was probably the most unimportant and irrelevant character in the film even though he was made to be the main lead. Even in earlier films, Jack Sparrow has always been this clumsy, goof ball but he always had a flair of smartness that helped him have the last laugh even against the biggest of his enemies. But here not once did he seem like a hero (except for a five minute flashback scene as Young Jack Sparrow), every damn time he is saved by either Henry Turner, Captain Barbossa or his own crew, and in fact the ‘Trident Hunt’ in the film is headed by Carina Smythe. So what exactly was he doing in the film? I have absolutely no idea. His was a hollow, soul-less character and served no purpose whatsoever to the film’s plotline. Captain Jack Sparrow had no relevance to the story at all. Period. Storywise, the film had no novelty factor, with multiple sub-plots that tend to get confusing after a point. The pace was so slow at times, that even at an odd 129 minutes of its runtime, it might exhaust you. What To Do In my opinion Jack Sparrow shouldn’t have returned as this was an insult to his legend.
