National Conference president Farooq Abdullah today sought that the Line of Control (LoC) should be converted into a 'Line of Peace' while India and Pakistan should initiate the dialogue process with an active involvement of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to usher harmony and tranquillity in the state.

He cautioned the Centre against taking the people of J&K "for granted and ignoring" their legitimate aspirations. He said the claims that demonetization had curbed stone pelting had fallen flat and expressed concern that "youth were now taking to guns".

India and Pakistan should resume the dialogue process and engage people of Jammu and Kashmir in an acceptable solution, Abdullah said addressing party workers at Balakote in Poonch district. Sagacity lies in acknowledging realities and shedding the baggage of the past, he said.

Referring to the Indo-Pak hostilities in 1990s, he said former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had invited the then Pakistan president Parvez Musharraf despite the Kargil incursion and his political wisdom worked in terms of a cease-fire agreement which brought cheer to the lives of border people.

"Why can't Vajpayee's spirit be emulated by his political inheritors," he said warning that extreme positions could lead to devastation and destruction in the entire region.

Reiterating his party's demand for greater autonomy to the state, the former chief minister said internal autonomy within the framework of Indian Constitution and conversion of Line of Control (LoC) into Line of Peace was the pragmatic way forward.

"The people of the state decided their future in 1947 by acceding to Mahatma Gandhi's secular India and they will fight all machinations of reversing these well-established credentials by polarising forces. "India is not religion specific but a country of all, irrespective of religion, region and caste. This legacy cannot be trampled on by fringe elements, currently holding the centre-stage in Indian politics, as a majority of Hindus disapprove politics of polarisation and division," he said.

Without naming BJP, he said the current spell of governance in New Delhi had created chaos all over, with people feeling their identities threatened and thus taking to streets.

Abdullah expressed concern over the "dicey political situation" saying he would keep his fingers crossed about things to happen in case the present arrangement is repeated in New Delhi in 2019.

"India cannot flourish with a myopic political vision. It has been a forward-looking country, which has to move forward as a strong, stable and a united nation," he added.

Abdullah cautioned people against the divisive politics, saying attempts were being made to create a wedge in the society on the basis of region and religion. "All this is being done with a sinister motive of fragmenting Jammu and Kashmir into three different regions", he said and warned those nurturing this "nightmarish dream".

National Conference would fight these designs tooth and nail, he said.

Earlier, at a public meeting at Mandi in Poonch district, Abdullah cautioned the Centre against taking the people of Jammu and Kashmir for granted.

"The claims that demonetization had put an end to stone pelting in Jammu and Kashmir have fallen flat as the youth were now taking to guns. The situation, therefore, cannot be allowed to drift anymore," he said.

The former chief minister called for earnest initiatives to reach out to the people and urged the Centre to resolve the issues which are essentially political in nature and try to win over the alienated hearts and minds by shunning the policy of "creating divisions".

The MP reiterated the need for Indo-Pak dialogue and said Line of Control (LoC) should be converted into 'Line of Peace and Goodwill' to enable unhindered people to people exchange and trade.

Abdullah said the conversion of LoC into Line of Peace would benefit peoples living along the borders on both sides, who have been braving the brunt of hostilities.

He referred to the violence over the alleged "dilution" of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and said machinations are being engineered to end reservation.

"The present dispensation at the Centre is working against the interests of farmers, weaker sections, and minorities," he alleged.

The NC president also blamed the PDP-BJP dispensation in Jammu and Kashmir for "failing" to deliver.

"The lack of accountability and mis-governance have added to the miseries of the people, who are feeling let down on every front," he claimed.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has accused India of launching a "brutal crackdown" in Kashmir after terror groups suffered a major setback following killing of 13 terrorists in counter-insurgency operations. Abbasi's statement late last night came after Indian security forces on Sunday gunned down 13 militants in three counter-insurgency operations that also claimed the lives of three Army jawans and four civilians in Anantnag and Shopian districts of Jammu and Kashmir. "The brutal crackdown, including the despicable use of pellet guns on civilians who were protesting against the killing is deplorable," Abbasi said. He also asked the international community to urge India to allow access to fact finding missions of the UN to Kashmir. Yesterday's operations by the Indian security forces have rendered a severe blow to terror groups such as the Hizbul Mujahideen and the Lashker-e-Taiba. Pakistan's Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa in a brief statement said today that Indian security forces cannot suppress the ?indigenous? struggle of Kashmiris for self-determination.

Ahdoos Hotel and Restaurant began its journey a century ago in the city center of Srinagar. Back in 1918, it was a standalone bakery shop running its operations from a small outlet on Srinagar's Residency Road.

Ahdoos has witnessed many turns of history. It bore witness to the bloody Partition. After India’s Independence, it became a nerve centre for political and social conversations concerning the Kashmir Valley.

Then, during the militancy of the early 90’s, it served as a welcoming hub for reporters travelling to Kashmir to report on the Kashmir conflict. Room boys would serve piping hot dinner to working journalists at any time of night and a fax machine was available at all odd hours to file stories and meet deadlines.

And now, tourists from across the world flock to Ahdoos for a taste of the famous and sumptuous Wazwan cuisine of Kashmir.

Ahdoos's customers say that the 100-year-old establishment is synonymous to Kashmir. However, and during the last three decades, it rose to prominence chiefly due to the insurgency and conflict. When every other hotel in Srinagar closed its doors to visitors, Ahdoos remained open. Journalists would throng to stay here and file their dispatches on the violence and conflict. The third generation owner of Ahdoos proudly says that even during those dark days, the hotel's business didn’t stop or miss a single beat.

As on the cusp of celebrating its 100th birthday, Ahdoo's owners are now renaming the brand to take a slice of Kashmir to big cities across India. As a franchise, Ahdoos will soon set up shop in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. The famous Ahdoos bakery will now be known as Creme.

For many government officials, bureaucrats, politicians and security officers, Ahdoos has become a cherished habit. And now, the management is taking on the challenge of meeting the tastes of the younger generation too.

At a time when the state of Jammu and Kashmir is under the grip of gun and violence, a whiff of fresh air is flowing on the secluded Rugby ground of Srinagar. Young girls are coming out on the field to play one of the most dangerous games.

The young players strike like a thunder, dodging and tackling to reach the finish line. There are not many onlookers, not many cheerleaders either but for these young girls every moment, every critique is a test of their passion and their spirit.

Undaunted they sprint towards the next milestone. Many of them have skipped classes in school to steal 60 minutes for this practice session.

Here are the girls from the Rugby team of Kashmir valley.

"In 2013 I, Irfan Aziz Bhutta and our chief coach of JK Rubgy saw some senior from school playing this sport. I was really inspired by this game because I am very well adapted to this game, my nature suits the game so well. So I joined the game. Since then I have played national tournaments, participated in many states and have been runners-up. Recently played snow rugby nationals in Gulmarg and we won a gold medal".

These girls are looking to make a career in the game of Rugby but they lack avenues and resources. A separate rugby ground was designated for this sport, but these girls say that is not enough. Sometimes the negative approach of society becomes a dampener. On many occasions, the street protests and violence have kept them away from the field. But they are unstoppable.

"Sometimes we get negativity from the society. Sometimes people come and comment negatively so it becomes difficult to continue our practice. Like in Ramzan we were practising in the ground, few people came and said we will throw you out of the ground, why are you girls playing in shorts throwing the balls here and there. Just all those negative comments. Since then we think people don’t really approve when girls go on the ground to prove themselves they don’t really tolerate it."

"Sometimes there is unrest and we can’t come on the field to practice. Tackling all those difficulties we manage and cooperate to be on the ground. To all those girls when they see me they get inspired. I have gained self-confidence, vigour and strength by this game. They see me as an idol."

There are around 300 girls playing Rugby in the Kashmir valley. Every Sunday they come out and spend hours practising on the field. Recently the team won a gold medal in a national level snow rugby championship. Players say their skills make them stand out in the game.

So when we go for nationals, everyone from other teams, we have skills, we have tackling techniques, so these are the things that work for us. They only have running skills. They are fit, they know how to go through the game. We have tackling skills. That makes us stand out.

After unlocking many achievements on the field some of these girls go on to become trainers. One such trainer has played for over a decade and is now on the forefront of training newcomers in the game. She trains not just female participants but also the men.

I started from past two three years, I trained both boys and girls in Kashmir university. I started from there.

That is a wonderful experience to coach the boys, they are very cooperative for it. They can excel in this game. They ask me every day to give them training so I go voluntarily and impart training to them.
