Bolsonaro’s latest decree allowing more establishments to stay open comes as Brazil registered 5,632 new coronavirus cases on Monday and 396 deaths from the disease, according to the Health Ministry.

After initially decreeing that establishments such as pharmacies and grocery stores were essential, Bolsonaro later expanded that list to include lotteries and churches.

This third decree expands the list of essential business further, also extending it to industrial production and civil construction, with Bolsonaro promising even more easing to come.

Health Minister Nelson Teich told a briefing on Monday that the ministry had not been consulted about Bolsonaro’s decision to allow gyms and beauty salons to reopen.

The ministry also said in a statement that it had issued guidelines to state and municipal authorities on the range of social distancing standards, from strict to loose, saying the ultimate decisions rests with local governments.

“It is local health authorities’ responsibility to adopt or loosen non-pharmalogical measures,” it said.

Bolsonaro has been condemned by health experts for maintaining his controversial stance of reopening the businesses to keep the economy running.

Brazil reports one-day record of 751 coronavirus deaths

Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro held a rally amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, In Pakistan - Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi lost his cool when a journalist asked him about social distancing.

Gravitas: Leaders who chose to ignore social distancing rules

Why political leaders don't get social distancing? There's a palpable sense of fear about how infectious the coronavirus is. Also read: Coronavirus: Italy reopens with strict guidelines after nearly two months Rich or poor, young or old, nobody's immune to this virus, not even top political leaders.

Why political leaders don't get social distancing? There's a palpable sense of fear about how infectious the coronavirus is. Also read: Coronavirus: Italy reopens with strict guidelines after nearly two months Rich or poor, young or old, nobody's immune to this virus, not even top political leaders. Leaders, who just don't understand the concept of social distancing. First, we had the British prime minister Boris Johnson. He wanted to shake hands with everybody -- even coronavirus patients. When confronted Johnson proudly stated that a virus will not stop him from greeting people. The virus only sent him to the ICU! Also read: Global coronavirus: Cases, death-toll and hotspots! Now we have another leader hell-bent on proving social distancing useless and his name is Jair Bolsonaro --- the president of Brazil. For 3 months now, Bolsonaro has downplayed how infectious this virus is. The trajectory of coronavirus in Brazil is reflective of Bolsonaro's denial. There are over 101,000 cases and counting. There have been more than 7,000 deaths. What does the Brazilian president plan on doing to break the chain of transmission? Yet here's what's happening in Brazil. A protest! The Brazilian president himself leads these protests. This is Jair Bolsonaro leading an anti-stay at home protest. Thousands of supporters were allowed into the courtyard of the presidential palace. Jair Bolsonaro himself did not wear a mask. He said: "Guys, it's a spontaneous demonstration, in defence of democracy, of freedom, to govern without interference to work for the future of Brazil. I am sure that this goal will be reached because we all want the good of our country. Thank you all, I will stay here for a while!" The virus was not too nice the last time a leader defied social distancing and then there are some leaders who are not too nice when questioned about social distancing. Like Pakistan's Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the Foreign Minister who is quite sprightly for his age. He turned up at a coronavirus treatment centre without a mask. He then decided to hold a press conference in defiance of social distancing. When confronted by reporters -- this lawmaker told them that they weren't following the rules either. He responded by calling it "negative thinking". Pakistan has recorded its highest spike in coronavirus cases with 1,900 new infections have been reported in the last 24 hours. The negative approach of the Pakistan government is doing enough damage.

Political leaders defy their own by breaking 'self-made' coronavirus protocols!

"The destruction of jobs by some governors is irresponsible and unacceptable. We will pay a high price in the future," the head of state said in a speech broadcast live on Facebook.

The country registered 101,147 confirmed cases of the virus by Sunday, according to figures released by the Brazilian health ministry, with 275 deaths from COVID-19 within the previous 24 hours.

Experts believe the overall number of COVID-19 cases could be 12 to 15 times higher, due to a large number of undetected cases given the lack of testing availability across the country's 210 million population.

The demonstration in Brasilia drew a larger crowd than similar protests in recent weeks, and many people held up banners criticising Bolsonaro critics Rodrigo Maia, head of the chamber of deputies, and former justice minister Sergio Moro who resigned last week. Others in the crowd called on the army to intervene.

"The people are with us and the army is on the side of the law, order, freedom and democracy," Bolsonaro told them.

Experts are bracing for the biggest outbreak in South America to get far worse, as the peak of the pandemic is thought to be some weeks away.

Last week, Rio de Janeiro state said it would extend stay-at-home orders until May 11, ignoring Bolsonaro's demands that local and state authorities encourage Brazilians to get back to work.

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro wants football competitions in the country resume services soon despite the high number of COVID-19 cases in the country. Bolsonaro argued that players have "small chance of dying" from coronavirus due to their top physical fitness.

Bolsonaro, while likening the COVID-19 pandemic to “a little flu” has downplayed the risk brought by the coronavirus. Brazilian football leagues were suspended on March 15, whereas the Brazilian championship was scheduled to kick-start in the month of May. However, the commencement of the Brazilian championship looks unlikely given that the country has become a COVID-19 hotspot with more than 5,900 deaths. “There is a lot of people in soccer that are favourable to a return because unemployment is knocking on clubs’ doors too,” Bolsonaro said in an interview with Radio Guaiba. “Footballers, if infected with the virus, have a small chance of dying. That’s because of their physical state because they are athletes.”

The Brazilian president further said that the new health minister will issue advisory for matches to return behind closed doors but admitted that players might be reluctant to take to the pitch. Bolsonaro said that the Brazilian government is ready to help in the resumption of live football in the country.

“The decision to restart soccer is not mine, but we can help,” Bolsonaro said, adding he has spoken with Gremio coach Renato Portaluppi about the issue and was told that players are still worried about the virus.

Also read | Boris Johnson set to return to office as pressure mounts to explain UK virus plan In a speech at capital Brasilia, he also said: "The change at the head of the federal police without a genuine reason is political interference that harms my credibility and that of the government." The Brazilian president called Moro's allegations "baseless", adding, "the appointment is mine, the prerogative is mine and the day I have to submit to any of my subordinates I cease to be president of the republic." Brazil's chief public prosecutor Augusto Aras asked the apex court to launch an investigation into the allegations. Last week, Bolsonaro also sacked his health minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta, who was in favour of isolation as a measure to contain the spread of the COVID-19. Bolsonaro has repeatedly spoken against the social distancing measures and downplayed the danger of COVID-19. Brazil has confirmed 357 coronavirus deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to as many as 3,670. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country stands at nearly 53,000.

Brazil: After weeks of clashes, President Jair Bolsonaro sacks Health Minister

Brazil's lower house of Congress approved a constitutional amendment for a "war budget" to separate coronavirus-related spending from the government's main budget and shield the economy as the country surpassed 10,000 confirmed cases.

The war budget still needs the Senate's approval by three-fifths of the votes in two rounds expected to take place next week.

Late on Friday, the lower house approved the main text of the bill with 423 votes in favour and one opposed in the second round of voting after the first score of 505 in favour and two against.

The amendment creates an extraordinary regime to prevent expenses related to a "state of emergency" decree triggered by the pandemic, which is valid until Dec. 31, from being mixed with the federal budget over the same period.

Besides easing fiscal and budgetary constraints to speed up measures tackling the outbreak, the war budget also grants the Brazilian central bank emergency bond-buying powers to stabilize financial markets.

"We must ensure money reaches key sectors, so as of this week we'll start discussing what we want to buy and what kind of intervention we want to make," Brazil's central bank president, Roberto Campos, said in a live presentation to XP brokerage on Saturday evening.

Campos sees the ongoing crisis as much worse than the 2008 one, noting that the COVID-19 outbreak has unleashed the largest outflow ever seen in emerging markets, with the Brazilian stock exchange and currency among the most affected.

"But we moved quickly to boost market liquidity and we still have an arsenal of measures to adopt," he said, adding the financial system is solid enough and actions altogether have the potential to inject up to 1.2 trillion reais ($224.32 billion) in liquidity.

Campos declined to comment on the duration of social isolation measures, but urged market participants to avoid breaching contracts, echoing earlier remarks by Economy Minister Paulo Guedes.

"We can renegotiate everything, rents, salaries, but we must not default," Guedes told representatives of retail and services industries separately on Saturday.

He recognized, however, that some measures taken to "oxygenate the economy," such as a cut in banks' reserve requirements, are not yet having the desired effect. "Banks are conservative and the credit is not reaching those who need it," he said.

Guedes reiterated that, despite the focus on emergency measures, he believes economic recovery still relies on structural reforms including tax cuts.

"Our way out of this crisis further ahead will be through tax cuts ... Creating jobs must be easy, cheap and stimulating," he said.

Brazil outbreak

Brazil's coronavirus death toll rose to 431 from 359, while the number of confirmed cases jumped to 10,278 from 9,056, according to Health Ministry figures released on Saturday afternoon.

Brazil is among a number of countries struggling to get medical supplies from China.

Earlier on Saturday, President Jair Bolsonaro asked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for support in supplying pharmaceutical inputs for the production of hydroxychloroquine.

"Had a productive telephone conversation with President Jair Bolsonaro about how India and Brazil can join forces against the COVID-19 pandemic," Modi wrote on his Twitter account.

Bolsonaro's approval rating has fallen to its lowest level since he took office last year amid mounting criticism of his handling of the public health crisis.

Despite downplaying COVID-19 as a "little flu" multiple times, Bolsonaro called his supporters for a national day of fasting and prayer on Sunday to "free Brazil from this evil" epidemic.

Brazilian State Governors defy Bolsonaro's commands over coronavirus pandemic

Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday that there can be no more quarantine measures imposed on the country than those already in place to combat coronavirus because jobs are being destroyed and the poor are suffering disproportionately.

Speaking to Rede TV, Bolsonaro criticized self-isolation and other measures imposed by local authorities to limit the spread of the virus, a view that again appeared to put him at odds with Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta.

Mandetta on Monday urged Brazilians to maintain maximum social distancing to ease the strain on the fragile health system and said that 200 million personal protective equipment (PPEs) items would be arriving from China next month.

"You can't impose any more quarantine than there already is," Bolsonaro said, adding that the question people ask him most is when can they return to work.

Brazil's Senate passed a bill on Monday evening guaranteeing some of the country's poorest citizens income of 600 reais ($117) a month for three months, a package that could cost almost 50 billion reais.

According to Bolsonaro, all measures to combat the crisis could cost 800 billion reais, and the economy, which is expected to contract this year, could rebound and be back on track within a year.

Earlier on Monday, Bolsonaro had stepped up his stand-off with state governments, branding governors in the hardest-hit states "job-killers" and suggesting that democracy could be at risk if the coronavirus crisis leads to social chaos.

"When the situation is heading toward chaos, with mass unemployment and hunger, it's fertile ground for some to exploit, seeking a way to reach power and never leave it," Bolsonaro told reporters outside the presidential palace.

Bolsonaro last week warned that Brazil could break with "democratic normalcy," citing the risk of rioting and suggesting "the left" could capitalize on any chaos, without elaborating.

The right-wing populist, elected in 2018 on a pledge to break with a corrupt political establishment, has long defended Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship as necessary to keep communists out of power.

The coronavirus outbreak, which has now resulted in 4,579 confirmed cases and 159 deaths in Brazil, has led governments around the world to call for emergency powers, raising concerns among human rights advocates.

So far Brazil's political leaders have been eager to negotiate emergency measures such as a "war budget" exempt from fiscal rules, but many have criticized the president, who lacks a solid alliance in Congress, for downplaying health risks.

On Sunday, Bolsonaro visited a market area outside the federal capital to stress the message that lockdown measures should be relaxed.

Facebook on Monday followed Twitter and removed a video of him speaking to street vendors, explaining that it violated their standards on misinformation.

Brazil economy 'can't stop' for coronavirus: Bolsonaro

Ignorance is bliss: World leaders who denied the gravity of COVID-19 crisis

Criminal gangs in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro impose curfew to curb the spread of coronavirus. Whereas Brazil Prez Jair Bolsonaro gives a slow response on this pandemic situation

Criminal Gang Rio's fight against Covid-19, impose curfew to curb the spread

The coronavirus is paralysing one country after another. First, it was china, then it crippled Italy. Now the United States could be next.

The World Health Organisation said that the United States has the potential of becoming the new coronavirus
epicentre.

On Wednesday, the number of infections in the United States reached 54,974 and became the third country with highest number of confirmed cases after China and Italy. The number of death toll stands at 785.

It is because of this large acceleration in cases that the United States is being called 'the possible new epicentre'.

Taking the hardest punch is the city of New York. The poster boy of the American dream is re-living its worst
nightmare.

The sense of panic in New York is a grim reminder of the fiscal crisis of the 1970s.

Only this time, it comes with a rising death toll.

So far, New York has recorded at least 14,776 COVID-19 cases while 131 new yorkers have died.

Here's what makes it even worse.

The coronavirus pandemic has coincided with the tail end of the peak flu season.

There are already thousands who are hospitalised because of flu.

The road ahead for the world's leading economy is pretty bumpy.

Across the planet, the grim COVID-19 toll mounted to over 18,200 deaths and 405,000 declared infections, half of them in Europe according to an AFP tally.

But there are some world leaders who are in a denial mode. For them, the coronavirus is not a matter of big concern.

Among these the number one is President of Mexico, Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

On March 4, AMLO dismissed the social distancing, a precautionary measure for coronavirus saying, 'You have to hug, nothing happens'.

A couple of days, and positive cases later, AMLO woke up to reality started stressing on the need of social distancing while asking his citizens to "stay at home".

However, on Sunday again, the President went back to his denial mode as he tweeted a video in which he encouraged people to got out and eat.

"Look at what we Mexicans are made of: we are workers, entrepreneurs, creative, happy, persevering, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera," he wrote in the tweet.

Instead of imposing a lockdown, Ortega has asked health officials to go door to door asking people to wash hands.

Zero respect for social distancing.

The coronavirus is paralysing one country after another. First, it was china, then it crippled Italy. Now the United States could be next. The World Health Organisation said that the United States has the potential of becoming the new coronavirus epicentre. The poster boy of the American dream is re-living its worst nightmare. Amid speculations, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tests negative for coronavirus

A new study has revealed that the trees in the world's largest rainforest are losing their ability to absorb carbon.

The study tracked 300,000 trees over 30 years, providing the first large-scale evidence of the decline in carbon uptake by the world’s tropical forests.

It was published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.

For the last three decades, the amount of carbon absorbed by the world’s intact tropical forests has fallen, according to the study from nearly 100 scientific institutions.

They are now taking up a third less carbon than they did in the 1990s, owing to the impacts of higher temperatures, droughts and deforestation. That downward trend is likely to continue, as forests come under increasing threat from climate change and exploitation.

The Amazon could turn into a source of carbon in the atmosphere, instead of one of the biggest absorbers of the gas, as soon as the next decade, owing to the damage caused by loggers and farming interests and the impacts of the climate crisis, new research has found.

If that happens, climate breakdown is likely to become much more severe in its impacts, and the world will have to cut down much faster on carbon-producing activities to counteract the loss of the carbon sinks.

''We’ve found that one of the most worrying impacts of climate change has already begun,” said Simon Lewis, a professor in the school of geography at Leeds University, one of the senior authors of the research.

''Humans have been lucky so far, as tropical forests are mopping up lots of our pollution, but they can’t keep doing that indefinitely,'' he said.

''We need to curb fossil fuel emissions before the global carbon cycle starts working against us. The time for action is now,'' he added.
