Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro on Friday sanctioned a law diluting the requirement of wearing face masks in public places to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

The far-right leader used his veto power to remove articles obliging people to wear masks in shops and churches.

Face coverings are already mandatory in several states, such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but this was the first such law on a national level.

One of the original articles stipulated that masks must be worn in "commercial and industrial establishments, religious temples, teaching premises and also closed places where people are gathering."

Bolsonaro alleged the article was unconstitutional, saying it could "possibly violate the home" in referring to closed places where businesses and meetings take place.

The Chamber of Deputies insisted this clause referred to places that are "accessible to the public" and not homes, which are protected by the constitution.

Coronavirus: Brazil nears 50,000 deaths; experts fear real number to be much higher

Brazil has passed the bleak milestone to become the second country in the world to confirm more than one million cases of Covid-19, as the disease continues to spread.

The health ministry also posted a record number of new cases in the past 24 hours, more than 54,000.

That brought the total number of infections in Brazil to 1,032,913, with 48,954 deaths, second only to the United States worldwide.

This is a record number of daily deaths from the novel coronavirus for a second consecutive day, according to Health Ministry data released on Wednesday, even as city and state authorities move aggressively to open commerce back up. Brazil has now registered 32,548 deaths and 584,016 total confirmed cases. Latin America as a whole has emerged as the world's worst coronavirus hotspot, with nations like Peru, Ecuador, Chile and Panama also grappling with massive caseloads, according to a Reuters report. The report said that Mexico also set a new record of 1,092 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday, with cases there blasting past 100,000. Brazil's right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro has repeatedly downplayed the threat of the virus, saying on Tuesday that death was "everyone's destiny." State and local authorities that have supported quarantining measures are loosening restrictions as hunger grows and public finances, shaky in the best of times, plummet deep into the red. In Rio de Janeiro, the nation's second-largest city, many types of shops were allowed to open for the first time in months on Tuesday. "First, we have to think of health before everything. Without doubt, we have to think about the economy with hunger and all those things, but COVID-19 is a disease that kills," said Renato Maya, a resident of Niteroi, right across the bay from Rio, as he took a city-provided coronavirus test on Wednesday. "The reopening to me seems necessary, but it needs to be done quite carefully." (With inputs from Reuters)

Despite being downplayed by Jair Bolsonaro, who called it a "little flu", Brazil has turned out to be the new epicentre of the virus. Their death toll has surged to 24,512, according to health ministry figures.

According to health experts, the numbers are probably much higher but due to under-testing, many cases are going unnoticed.

In terms of cases, Brazil has recorded 391,222 infections in a population of 210 million. Brazil is second to the United States.

While the country has officially surpassed the United States in terms of the daily death toll, Bolsonaro continues to tout the virus as a ''measly cold'' and is not willing to acknowledge the outcome of his actions.

To top it all, the 65-year-old leader did not pay any heed to social distancing regulations and hugged his supporters. In this manner, not only did he put his life at risk but also of countless others as well.
