I wish the makers success in retelling the story of one of the most indomitable women of our times.”</p>

<p>A photograph of Jayalalithaa with Prime Minister Narendra Modi (taken when she presented a memorandum to him years ago) was displayed, for the first time in the AIADMK headquarters premises, which already has a host of her photos, besides that of party founder M G Ramachandran.</p>

<p>When contacted, a party office executive said the photograph was among several other pictures put up for the Amma's anniversary celebrations.</p>

<p>It was put up in an effort to highlight the personality of Amma, who had friendly ties with leaders across the political spectrum, he said.</p>

<p>"The premises were decorated with photos of Amma with great leaders, including Anna (Dravidian icon), Thanthai Periyar (reformist leader), former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Mother Teresa," he told PTI, adding that Modi's photograph was one among them.</p>

<p>The photographs were displayed by the literary wing, coinciding with the 'Annadhanam,' (community feast) event at the headquarters premises for the anniversary, he added.</p>

<p>Panneerselvam and Palaniswami, the AIADMK coordinator and co-coordinator, garlanded a statue of Jayalalithaa at the party office, distributed sweets and released a souvenir marking the occasion.</p>

<p>Palaniswami also launched a state-wide drive to plant 71 lakh saplings.</p>

<p>Modi, whose party has entered into a pact with the AIADMK for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, in a tweet said: "Tributes to Jayalalithaa Ji on her birth anniversary. Her contribution towards the development of Tamil Nadu will be remembered for generations.</p>

71-kg cake, gold rings marked Jayalalithaa's birth anniversary on Sunday

<p>A cabinet meeting in 2016 during the hospitalisation of late J Jayalalithaa did not discuss shifting her abroad for treatment, Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar deposed on Monday before a panel looking into her death.</p>

<p>Briefing reporters about the deposition of Vijayabaskar before the Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry here, counsel for V K Sasikala, N Raja Senthoor Pandian said that the Minister made this submission related to foreign treatment during cross-examination.</p>

<p>Asked whether any minister at the October 19, 2016 cabinet meeting had spoken about shifting Jayalalithaa abroad for treatment, the Health Minister replied that such a topic did not come up for discussion, the counsel said.</p>

<p>One of the questions that came up in the proceedings before the Commission was whether treatment for Jayalalithaa at a hospital abroad was considered or not.</p>

<p>"Vijayabaskar replied that such a topic (on shifting her abroad for treatment) did not come up at the Cabinet meeting and there were no circumstances to warrant such a discussion," Pandian said.</p>

<p>Vijayabaskar, who was both examined and cross-examined Monday, said he had seen Jayalalithaa at close quarters when she was wheeled away for the tracheostomy procedure on October 7, 2016, at Apollo Hospital, according to Pandian.</p>

<p>On an Apollo doctor's statement to the Commission that Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had seen Jayalalithaa on October 7, 2016, at the hospital, the Minister replied that the doctor's deposition would be correct, he said.</p>

<p>In the past, Ministers like Dindigul C Sreenivasan had said that they had no access to see the late leader during her 75-day hospitalisation.</p>

<p>The Minister's answers were also consistent with that of Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan's depositions on all aspects, including foreign treatment, Sasikala's counsel said.</p>

<p>A counsel for the Commission had alleged in December 2018 that Radhakrishnan colluded and conspired with Apollo Hospital and "inappropriate treatment" was provided to the late leader.</p>

<p>The panel counsel had also alleged that the senior health official was against taking Jayalalithaa abroad for treatment.</p>

<p>Both the hospital and the secretary had strongly refuted the allegations.</p>

<p>Vijayabaskar, in his brief remarks, told reporters that he extended his full cooperation to the Commission and answered all questions posed to him.</p>

<p>In September 2017, the Tamil Nadu government had constituted the Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952.</p>

<p>The panel's terms of reference was to inquire into the circumstances leading to the hospitalisation of Jayalalithaa on September 22, 2016, and treatment provided by the hospital till her death on December 5, 2016.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She asked, "What is my blood pressure?" To which the doctor replied, "140/80. It is quite high."</p>

<p>The Justice A. Arumugasamy Commission has put out in public-domain a diet and medical chart of the former Tamil Nadu CM as submitted to it by her personal physician Dr KS Sivakumar.</p>

<p>The chart has in-depth information of her diet, blood pressure and sugar levels as jotted down on August 2, 2016, which is before her hospitalization.</p>

<p>The health chart suggests Jayalalithaa had subsisted on Idli, breads, coffee, green tea and biscuits.</p>

<p>On January 12, the hospital, where the late AIADMK supremo was being treated during her illness two years ago, submitted treatment documents of the same to an inquiry commission, which was set up to probe her death.</p>

<p>Following her death, allegations of foul play began to do the rounds and Tamil Nadu forest minister Dindigul Sreenivasan even claimed that all cabinet ministers had lied to the people about hospitalisation and death of the former chief minister Jayalalithaa.</p>

Sasikala, a close confidante of Jayalalithaa, was expected to continue her silent vow till January end, Dhinakaran said without elaborating.</p>

<p>Sasikala&#39;s appointment as interim general secretary following Jayalalithaa&#39;s death has been annulled by the AIADMK general council in September last after the merger of factions led by Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his now deputy O Panneerselvam.</p>

<p>The meet also held as invalid all her decisions, including the appointment of Dhinakaran as the deputy general secretary.</p>

<p>Dhinakaran said Sasikala listened to what he told her about the future course of action on party matters.</p>

<p>This was his first visit to the prison to meet Sasikala after winning the December 21 RK Nagar bypoll, held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of sitting MLA Jayalalithaa, who passed away on December 5, 2016.</p>

<p>On the one-man inquiry commission probing the death of Jayalalithaa summoning Sasikala, he said his aunt had been asked to submit whatever evidence she had in this connection within 15 days and she had not been asked to appear in person.</p>

<p>The RK Nagar bypoll was made necessary by the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.</p>

<p>The election is also being seen as a litmus test for the ruling party which has been facing a barrage of accusations including of alleged corruption.&nbsp;</p>

<p>News reports said RK Nagar had witnessed chaotic scenes on Saturday after election officials and DMK cadre chased and seized about Rs 13 lakh from men accused of trying to distribute cash to voters.</p>

<p>The reports added that a few men were caught trying to do the same thing today.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Sunday, the men were caught trying to distribute packets of biryani and Rs 2,000 notes to voters. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The RK Nagar&nbsp;bypoll had been cancelled in April following allegations of the distribution of cash to voters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bypoll is now to be held on December 21 and campaigning is on in full swing.</p>

Breakaway AIADMK leader TTV Dinakaran will be contesting the bypoll as an independent candidate. The RK Nagar bypoll was made necessary by the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa. The election is also being seen as a litmus test for the ruling party which has been facing a barrage of accusations including of alleged corruption. News reports said RK Nagar had witnessed chaotic scenes on Saturday after election officials and DMK cadre chased and seized about Rs 13 lakh from men accused of trying to distribute cash to voters. The reports added that a few men were caught trying to do the same thing today. On Sunday, the men were caught trying to distribute packets of biryani and Rs 2,000 notes to voters. The RK Nagar bypoll had been cancelled in April following allegations of the distribution of cash to voters. The bypoll is now to be held on December 21 and campaigning is on in full swing.

<p>A day after TTV Dinakaran sacked several ministers including Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami as the party&#39;s Salem district secretary, the AIADMK (Amma) Monday passed resolutions calling off all appointments made by him.</p>

<p>Four resolutions were passed at a meeting held by Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami at the AIADMK headquarters in Chennai where the party declared Dinakaran&#39;s appointments as &quot;null and void&quot;.</p>

<p>The meeting said that Dinakaran was sacked from the post of deputy general secretary on August 10 itself, therefore any changes made by him in the party posts were invalid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the resolutions adopted by the party meeting said Dhinakaran had &quot;no authority or qualification&quot; to remove the appointees of late AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa.</p>

<p>He was appointed as deputy general secretary by Sasikala before her imprisonment to the Bengaluru jail. The resolution said he was not authorised by relevant party bye-laws. Also the Election Commission had refused to accept his appointment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;With the Election Commission so far not recognising V K Sasikala&#39;s appointment as general secretary, which was done as an interim measure, the appointment of Dhinakaran as deputy general secretary by her and his getting involved in party affairs is against party laws,&quot; it said.</p>

<p>The resolution said that they had very clearly stated all this to Dhinakaran.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dhinakaran was already made familiar to all this by &quot;functionaries appointed by &#39;Amma&#39; (Jayalalithaa),&quot;.</p>

<p>Dhinakaran and his followers have dismissed Palaniswami&#39;s meeting and the resolution passed at the AIADMK headquarters, claiming that only the party&#39;s general secretary has the authority to hold a meeting and they were not invited to the party meeting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dhinakaran, nephew of Sasikala, along with the support of 21 MLAs is demanding the removal of Palaniswami as CM. Since the merger, he has also been trying to prove his authority over the party by bringing in his supporters and removing the already existing ones.&nbsp;<br />

Questioning the legality of the appointments made by Sasikala before going to jail the meeting has also adopted a resolution to call a general council meeting for the expulsion of jailed party chief.</p>

<p>Sasikala&#39;s appointed as the interim general secretary of the party on 29 December after the demise of former chief minister and party supremo J Jayalalithaa, was already approaching an end since the merger of the two factions.<br />

On August 20 when the two factions of the AIADMK, led by Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam came together, MP R Vaithilingam had already indicated on the removal of Sasikala from the party post. This was one of the demands raised by Panneerselvam and his faction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides this, the meeting has also decided to bring back the party backed media &#39;Namathu Dr MGR&#39;&nbsp;and &#39;Jaya TV&#39;.</p>

<p>Jaya TV and the daily were launched following efforts of Jayalalithaa and the contribution of lakhs of party workers and therefore they are our party&#39;s assets,&quot; it said.</p>

<p>One of the resolutions also said it has been resolved to strive hard to &quot;protect &quot; the party and its government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The developments comes a day after Sasikala was elected as the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)&nbsp;Party leader, paying way to become the chief minister.</p>

<p>The Supreme Court will give the verdict on various appeals including the one filed by Karnataka against the acquittal of Jayalalithaa and others in a disproportionate assets case.</p>

<p>Karnataka government, in its plea against May 11 order, claimed that HC had erred in computing disproportionate assets of the AIADMK leader. The Karnataka government also asked whether the high court had &quot;erred in law&quot; by according benefit of the&nbsp;doubt to Jayalalithaa in pursuance of a Supreme Court judgement holding that accused can be acquitted if his or her disproportionate assets were to the extent of ten per cent.</p>

<p>The state government had also claimed that the high court has erred in overruling preliminary objections raised by it and added that the accused had filed their appeals against conviction without impleading Karnataka as a party. The special court had in 2014 held Jayalalithaa guilty of corruption and sentenced her to four years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore.</p>

Setback for Sasikala? SC verdict on Jayalalithaa's disproportionate assets case likely this week

<p>Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa&#39;s funeral was held on Tuesday evening at Chennai&#39;s Marina Beach.</p>

<p>The 68-year-old was laid to rest near her mentor and AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran&#39;s memorial.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Her body, dressed in her favourite green sari and draped in the national flag, was kept at the city&#39;s Rajaji Hall throughout the day for people&nbsp;to pay their last respects.</p>

<p>Her last journey started from Rajaji Hall for the Marina Beach on a military vehicle which was surrounded by thousands of wailing supporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam, Jayalalithaa&#39;s close confidante Sasikala Natarajan and others were seated on the military truck that was towing the casket-laden carriage.</p>

<p>After the military honours, her body was transferred to a sandalwood coffin from the glass casket.</p>

<p>Sasikala and&nbsp;the AIADMK supremo&#39;s nephew Deepak performed the last rites at the M G Ramachandran Memorial Site.</p>

<p>They&nbsp;put some sandalwood, flowers and other items on her coffin, before it was lowered into the grave.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tributes have poured in for the former chief minister. Among them was one from her greatest rival, the DMK&#39;s K Karunanidhi who said her fame would remain forever.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last respects at Rajaji Hall today afternoon.</p>

<p>The Indian government has declared a day of mourning&nbsp;and ordered all flags to fly at half mast.</p>

<p>Jaya died late Monday night. The hospital recorded the time of her death as 11.30 pm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She had suffered a cardiac arrest the previous evening. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaya had been at Apollo Hospital since September 22 after she complained of fever and dehydration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Security was reviewed in the state as soon as news of her cardiac arrest broke, with riot police being put on standby.&nbsp;</p>
