All planned aid convoys into the north have been denied by Israeli authorities in recent weeks. The last convoy allowed in was on January 23, according to the World Health Organization.

Even convoys cleared in advance with Israeli authorities have been blocked or come under fire.

Laerke cited an event that occurred on Sunday (Feb 25) in which a convoy led by the Palestinian Red Crescent (PRCS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to evacuate 24 patients from the besieged Al Amal hospital in the southern city of Khan Yunis was delayed for seven hours, resulting in the arrest of paramedics.

"The WHO-led convoy was delayed by Israeli authorities for several hours as soon as it left the hospital, even though all staff personnel and vehicles had previously coordinated with the Israeli side," Laerke said to reporters in Geneva.

He claimed that "the Israeli military stripped all paramedics of their uniforms and ordered patients and personnel out of ambulances."

The convoy was forced to abandon another 31 patients at Amal hospital, which is no longer operational following 40 attacks in the past month alone that have killed at least 25 people.

According to Laerke, "Three PRCS paramedics were subsequently held, despite having previously given their personal information to the Israeli soldiers." There is just one that has been made available. 
 
"This is not an isolated incident," he stressed.

In response to Israel's failure to guarantee the safety of its emergency medical teams, the PRCS announced a 48-hour suspension of operations in Gaza.

UN body accuses Israel of systematically blocking access to aid in Gaza Strip

An Israeli strike Wednesday on a residential area of Damascus killed at least two people, Syrian official media reported, the latest fatalities as hostilities increase during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

The latest attack came one day after 12 countries including the US&nbsp;Britain and Japan issued a joint statement cautioning the Houthis of unspecified "consequences" unless it halts its attacks, in what one US&nbsp;official on Wednesday suggested was a final warning.

The Iran-aligned Houthis, who control much of Yemen, have launched wave after wave of exploding drones and missiles at commercial vessels since Nov. 19, trying to inflict a cost in what they say is a protest against Israel's military operations in Gaza.

The Houthi campaign has been extraordinarily disruptive to international shipping, causing some companies to suspend transits through the Red Sea and instead take the much longer, costlier journey around Africa.

Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, who leads US&nbsp;Naval forces in the Middle East, told reporters on Thursday that the Houthi exploding boat drove out about 50 miles (80.47 kilometres) into the Red Sea and then detonated in dense shipping lanes.

"It came within a couple of miles of ships operating in the area — merchant ships and U.S. Navy ships — and we all watched as it exploded," Cooper told reporters, adding the target of the attack was not clear.

Cooper said there have now been 25 attacks by the Houthis against merchant vessels transiting the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and added "there are no signs that their irresponsible behaviour is abating."

The repeated Houthi attacks have increased pressure on President Joe Biden to respond militarily, something his administration has been reluctant to do out of fear of escalating already soaring regional tensions.

Retired four-star Marine general Frank McKenzie, who led US&nbsp;forces in the Middle East until retiring in 2022, said the Biden administration's response to attacks in the Red Sea and against US&nbsp;troops at bases in Iraq and Syria has been too "tentative" and "unfocused."

"To reset deterrence, we must apply violence that Tehran understands," McKenzie wrote in an Op-Ed published on Thursday in the Wall Street Journal.

The United States and other countries last month launched Operation Prosperity Guardian to protect civilian vessels, which Cooper said now included contributions from 22 countries. So far, Cooper said US&nbsp;warships and US&nbsp;partners have shot down two cruise missiles, six anti-ship ballistic missiles and 11 drones.

On Sunday, US&nbsp;warships sank three Houthi speed boats to protect a commercial vessel from being hijacked.

A senior Biden administration official told reporters on Wednesday "if that happened again, we would probably do the exact same thing." The same official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 12-nation statement to the Houthis was very clear.

"I would not anticipate another warning," the official said.

At the United Nations, a US&nbsp;representative told the U.N. Security Council the United States believed the situation in the Red Sea had reached an "inflection point."

Asked whether Operation Prosperity Guardian might target Houthi positions with strikes to prevent them from attacking ships, Cooper said that the 22-nation coalition was purely defensive in nature.

"Anything that happens outside of the defensive aspect of this operation is a completely different operation," he said.

The Houthis have said their attacks on commercial shipping target vessels with Israeli links or were sailing to Israel.

But many vessels have had no Israeli connection and were not bound for Israeli ports, and major shipping lines have suspended their operations through the Red Sea.

Cooper said the ships that have been attacked have direct connections to 55 countries.

"So regardless of the vessel's company ownership or its destination, these Houthi attacks are for sure destabilizing and contrary to international law and clearly … must stop immediately," Cooper said.

The Iran-aligned Houthis, who control much of Yemen, have launched wave after wave of exploding drones and missiles at commercial vessels since Nov. 19, trying to inflict a cost in what they say is a protest against Israel's military operations in Gaza. The Houthi campaign has been extraordinarily disruptive to international shipping, causing some companies to suspend transits through the Red Sea and instead take the much longer, costlier journey around Africa. Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, who leads US Naval forces in the Middle East, told reporters on Thursday that the Houthi exploding boat drove out about 50 miles (80.47 kilometres) into the Red Sea and then detonated in dense shipping lanes. "It came within a couple of miles of ships operating in the area — merchant ships and U.S. Navy ships — and we all watched as it exploded," Cooper told reporters, adding the target of the attack was not clear. Cooper said there have now been 25 attacks by the Houthis against merchant vessels transiting the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and added "there are no signs that their irresponsible behaviour is abating." The repeated Houthi attacks have increased pressure on President Joe Biden to respond militarily, something his administration has been reluctant to do out of fear of escalating already soaring regional tensions. Retired four-star Marine general Frank McKenzie, who led US forces in the Middle East until retiring in 2022, said the Biden administration's response to attacks in the Red Sea and against US troops at bases in Iraq and Syria has been too "tentative" and "unfocused." "To reset deterrence, we must apply violence that Tehran understands," McKenzie wrote in an Op-Ed published on Thursday in the Wall Street Journal. The United States and other countries last month launched Operation Prosperity Guardian to protect civilian vessels, which Cooper said now included contributions from 22 countries. So far, Cooper said US warships and US partners have shot down two cruise missiles, six anti-ship ballistic missiles and 11 drones. On Sunday, US warships sank three Houthi speed boats to protect a commercial vessel from being hijacked. A senior Biden administration official told reporters on Wednesday "if that happened again, we would probably do the exact same thing." The same official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 12-nation statement to the Houthis was very clear. "I would not anticipate another warning," the official said. At the United Nations, a US representative told the U.N. Security Council the United States believed the situation in the Red Sea had reached an "inflection point." Asked whether Operation Prosperity Guardian might target Houthi positions with strikes to prevent them from attacking ships, Cooper said that the 22-nation coalition was purely defensive in nature. "Anything that happens outside of the defensive aspect of this operation is a completely different operation," he said. The Houthis have said their attacks on commercial shipping target vessels with Israeli links or were sailing to Israel. But many vessels have had no Israeli connection and were not bound for Israeli ports, and major shipping lines have suspended their operations through the Red Sea. Cooper said the ships that have been attacked have direct connections to 55 countries. "So regardless of the vessel's company ownership or its destination, these Houthi attacks are for sure destabilizing and contrary to international law and clearly … must stop immediately," Cooper said.

Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei&nbsp;on Tuesday (Oct 10), denied Tehran's involvement in the surprise assault launched by Hamas on Israel over the weekend, but voiced support for the militant group.

In his first televised speech since the attack, the leader said,&nbsp;"The supporters of the Zionist regime (Israel) and some people in the usurping regime (a reference to USA) have been spreading rumours over the past two or three days, including that Islamic Iran was behind this action. They are wrong."

"This destructive earthquake (Hamas' attack) has destroyed some critical structures (in Israel) which will not be repaired easily ... The Zionist regime's own actions are to blame for this disaster," Khamenei said at a military academy.

"Of course, we defend Palestine, we defend the struggles."

“We kiss the foreheads and arms of the resourceful and intelligent designers [of the operation] and the Palestinian youth,” he added.

He also urged "the whole Islamic world" to support the Palestinians.

Khamenei noted that while everyone spoke of the "defeat", he would emphasise the “irrevocability” of it.

Khamenei said Israel has suffered an "irreparable failure" on both "military and intelligence" fronts.

<h2>'Normalising Israel ties is a losing bet', says Khamenei</h2>

Khamenei on Tuesday also warned countries in West Asia seeking to normalise ties with Israel that they "are betting on a losing horse".

"The definite position of the Islamic Republic is that countries that make the gamble of normalisation with Israel will lose. They are betting on a losing horse," Khamenei said.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in response to Khamenei's remarks that Iran's efforts to stop countries in the region from forging ties with Israel will fail, citing agreements it signed with Arab nations in 2020.

"Just as Iran hasn't prevented us from achieving the Abraham Accords, Iran will also not prevent us from expanding the circle of peace for the benefit of the citizens of Israel, the people of the region and all of humanity," he said.

<h2>'Proud operation'</h2>

Earlier, soon after the Hamas offensive&nbsp;on Saturday (Oct 7), Khamenei's senior adviser hailed it as a "proud operation".

"We support the proud Operation Al-Aqsa Flood," Yahya Rahim Safavi said using the codename for the operation announced by Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

"We support this operation, and we are sure that the resistance front also supports this issue," added Safavi, a Revolutionary Guards general, in comments reported by the ISNA news agency.&nbsp;

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi also backed the attack, calling it an act of self-defence by Palestinians.

But the most prominent show of support came from Tehran where&nbsp;thousands of Iranians gathered at Palestine Square in Tehran and set off fireworks in support of Palestine.

The choice before Israel is simply to ensure its self-preservation in a hostile neighbourhood where support for militancy to achieve territorial goals has dominated the geopolitical discourse since the modern Jewish-dominated&nbsp;state's&nbsp;inception.&nbsp;

At the same time, up to 100 Israeli hostages, and an unspecified number of various foreign nationals, including women and children, have been taken into Hamas-administered Gaza by the Islamist militants,&nbsp;complicating any Israeli military operation to free them.

Videos on HAMAS-affiliated Telegram channels seen by WION showed militants in small boats attempting to enter Israel by sea.

Militants also infiltrated Jewish communities near the border with Gaza, killing and seizing civilians and soldiers.

Israeli officials confirmed that nearly 1,000&nbsp;Israeli civilians and members of the military were killed while another 1,800 were wounded. Dozens of foreign nationals, among them, individuals from France, the United States and Nepal were taken hostages.&nbsp;Seven&nbsp;French citizens are missing after the Hamas attack, with one&nbsp;confirmed dead.&nbsp;

Several Germans, who are also Israeli nationals, were among those kidnapped by Hamas militants, German ministerial sources told AFP.&nbsp;

WION can confirm that at least 10 Nepalese students have died during the ongoing conflict in Israel.

The latest&nbsp;Hamas attack has abruptly altered the picture of&nbsp;diplomacy as a means to achieve lasting peace among the West Asian capitals where the dawn of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MaAsrvQ70s">Abraham Accords</a> had raised the hopes for an era of stability in the region.

The Capitals: Jerusalem vows to change ground reality in Palestine 'for next 50 years'

Multiple media reports across countries have said that a dead body being paraded naked by Hamas in a pickup truck&nbsp;as seen in a viral social media post&nbsp;is that of a German woman.

It is being widely reported that the body is of Shani Louk, a German tattoo artist. The claim that it is her is being made online by users who said they have made comparison of tattoos on the dead body with those seen sported by Louk in previous pictures she herself clicked and posted on social media.

Louk's mother has said in another video doing rounds on social media that her 30-year-old daughter was in Israel with a tourist group. She has&nbsp;confirmed having seen the viral video in question and said that it was Shani but has also made an appeal to&nbsp;public for more information and help.

News.com.au has quoted Shani's cousin Tomasina who has claimed that it is Shani in the viral video. She however, has hoped for a positive news.

"It is definitely Shani. She was at a music festival for peace. This is a nightmare for our family," Tomsina said according to the news outlet.

Shani Louk was attending a music festival. The site was reportedly one of the first locations to be attacked by Hamas.

German woman’s body paraded naked by Hamas terrorists; mother appeals for info and help

In a shocking incident, horrific visuals of&nbsp;a family held hostage by reportedly armed men of the Hamas group have surfaced online.&nbsp;

In one such video, shared by Israel-based journalist India Naftali, a family is seen sitting on the floor where two children, who appear to be minors, are crying reportedly distressed by the execution of their elder sister.

"Why is there blood on your hands, papa?," the son asked his father and breaks&nbsp;down.

"I wanted her to stay alive, my sister is dead,"&nbsp;said a girl referring to her elder sister who was executed in front of them.

"Is there no chance that she will come back?," asked the other visibly traumatised sibling.

"I cannot afford to lose another life, now,"&nbsp;said the mother while asking the two to lie down as sirens are sounded.

An armed man, whose face cannot be seen in the video, shouts, "Relax, relax, she went to heaven."

'She went to heaven': Hamas terrorists execute daughter of Israeli family held hostage

Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's senior adviser, on Saturday (Oct 7), extended support for the attack launched by Hamas on Israel and termed it a "proud operation".

"We support the proud Operation Al-Aqsa Flood," Yahya Rahim Safavi said using the codename for the operation announced by Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

"We support this operation, and we are sure that the resistance front also supports this issue," added Safavi, a Revolutionary Guards general, in comments reported by the ISNA news agency.&nbsp;

He then vowed support for the Palestinian militants "until the liberation of Palestine and Jerusalem".

<h2>Iran's foreign ministry also hails assault</h2>

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani also congratulated Palestinian extremists and hailed the attack.

"Today's operation marked a new page in the field of resistance and armed operations against the occupiers," he said.

<h2>Pakistan, Afghanistan voice support for Palestine</h2>

Pakistan and Afghanistan also voiced support for Palestine and called for the "cessation of hostilities".

Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement saying, "We call on the international community to come together for cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians and for a lasting peace in the Middle East."

"Pakistan has consistently advocated for a two-state solution as the key to enduring peace in the Middle East, with a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian question anchored in international law and in line with relevant United Nations and OIC resolutions. A viable, sovereign and contiguous State of Palestine should be established on the basis of pre-1967 borders, with Al Quds Al-Sharif as its capital," the statement added.

On the other hand, the Taliban government also hailed the attack by Hamas calling it an "Israeli trampling" on the rights of Palestinians.

The statement from Afghanistan's MFA read, "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has carefully monitored the recent events in the Gaza Strip and considers the occurrence of such events to be the result of Israeli Zionists trampling on the rights of the oppressed Palestinian people and repeated insults and disrespect to Muslim holy places, and any type of defence and The resistance of the Palestinian people for freedom."

<h2>Qatar holds Israel responsible for the attack</h2>

Qatar held Israel responsible for the violence and called for the international community to take action against Tel Aviv.

The statement read, "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs holds Israel solely responsible for the ongoing escalation due to its ongoing violations of the rights of the Palestinian people, the latest of which was the repeated incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque under the protection of the Israeli police."

'Proud operation': Iranian officials support deadly attack by Hamas on Israel

United States President Joe Biden, on Saturday (Oct 7), voiced "rock solid and unwavering" support for Israel condemning the attacks launched by Hamas terrorists. He also pledged to ensure the citizens have all the means that they require to defend themselves.&nbsp;

The US President, describing the assault as "a terrible tragedy on a human level", said that he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and offered him "all appropriate means of support".

"I told him the United States stands with the people of Israel in the face of these terrorist assaults," Biden said in a televised address from the White House.

"In my administration, support for Israel's security is rock solid and unwavering."

"We'll make sure that they have the help their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves."

"Israel has a right to defend itself and its people - full stop. Let me say this as clearly as I can; this is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks, to seek advantage. The world is watching," he warned.

Former US President Donald Trump took a dig at Biden accusing him of funding the attacks indirectly.

"These Hamas attacks are a disgrace and Israel has every right to defend itself with overwhelming force," Trump said in a statement.

"Sadly, American taxpayer dollars helped fund these attacks, which many reports are saying came from the Biden Administration."

The allegations made by Trump echoed the accusations made by Republicans that claimed the money which was given to Iran as a part of a prisoner exchange deal last month, was used to fund the Hamas attack.

"Iran has helped fund this war against Israel, and Joe Biden's policies that have gone easy on Iran has helped to fill their coffers. Israel is now paying the price for those policies," said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican running for his party's presidential nomination.

However, a Biden administration official asserted that not a single cent out of the $6 billion has been spent yet.&nbsp;

"I can't comment on 2024 because of the Hatch Act. But I can clarify the facts: Not a single cent from these funds has been spent, and when it is spent, it can only be spent on things like food and medicine for the Iranian people," said White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson.

Sharren Haskel the lawmaker, expressed displeasure at Deputy Speaker of the Knesset Uriel Buso. Haskel went to the podium wearing a sling that held her daughter.

According to the report, Haskel, a member of the Knesset and member of the opposition National Unity Party, wanted to present a bill to the plenum. As she approached the podium, Buso told her that as per regulations, only Members of Knesset could stand at the podium. Haskel went on to explain that she had tried to place her daughter in a stroller but the infant cried and hence, she was forced to keep it in the sling.

Buso consulted office of the Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana along with the parliament's legal advisors. They confirmed to him that only Members of the Knesset were allowed to stand at the podium.

However, Buso insisted. Haskel then offered to stand a bit away from the podium and make her speech. But the legal experts of the parliament disallowed even this.

After the incident, an annoyed Haskel released a statement and expressed her displeasure at Speaker Ohana. She said that it is “sad that the Knesset Speaker, who has two children at home, chooses to prevent a woman with children from going up to the plenary podium”.

Haskel said that there was no rule that said that a Member of the Knesset could not speak carrying her baby and that allowing the member to speak in such a situation was a discretion of the speaker “who made a sad decision today that, truth be told, was humiliating and terrible for me as a mother.”

“I insist on walking with pride and without shame, not to hide or be ashamed of my motherhood, but to prove to women everywhere that it is possible and necessary to normalize mothers everywhere, even in the Israeli Knesset,” she said.

Israel parliament prevents woman member holding baby from speaking

Elected officials and representatives of Israel's Arab minority demonstrated in Jerusalem on Tuesday against the crime plaguing their communities, calling on the government to increase security, an AFP reporter said.&nbsp;

Around 50 current and former members of parliament, as well as municipal representatives and Jewish supporters, gathered in a tent in front of the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a sit-in that began Monday.&nbsp;

"The police are complicit in the crime", read a large banner hanging in the tent in Arabic, Hebrew and English.&nbsp;

Mohammed Baraka, a former MP who heads the High Committee for the Arab Minority in Israel, a civil society group which organised the protest, told AFP it opposed the "spread of crime."

"Hardly a day goes by without gunshots, injuries or murders," he said. "Instead of working to develop our towns and society, we're thinking about how to get out of our homes safely."

Experts say Arab gangs have amassed large quantities of illegal weapons over the past two decades and are involved in drug, arms and human trafficking, prostitution, extortion and money laundering.

Arab-Israelis, descendants of Palestinians who stayed on their land after Israel's creation in 1948 and comprise around 20 per cent of the country's population, have long complained of discrimination and police inaction against violence and crime within their communities.

Baraka accused Israeli authorities of responsibility for the "catastrophe" because the Arab community itself is not allowed to have "the power to arrest, prosecute or confiscate weapons."

According to Israeli police, 84 Arabs have been killed since the start of the year.&nbsp;

"There are thousands of wounded, and nobody talks about it," Mahmoud Nassar, a specialist in criminology at the non-governmental Center for Combating Violence and Crime, told AFP.&nbsp;

At a parliamentary discussion on Arab crime on Monday, Netanyahu invited the Arab lawmakers to his office for a roundtable to address the situation.

"I hear your appeal for increased police presence and more gun confiscations," he said. "We'll have to act on many fronts, and I want your help and cooperation."

The witness who is eight months pregnant had to head straight to an emergency clinic to ascertain if her pregnancy was unharmed after the commotion. Thousands of Israeli people took to the streets in Tel Aviv, late Saturday, in protest against the new government’s policies which is now led&nbsp;by the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This comes days&nbsp;after his administration’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin unveiled his plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system, which opponents and critics say threaten democracy and freedom.&nbsp;

What is the legal reform plan about?

On Wednesday, the country’s justice minister announced the new government’s long-promised overhaul of the judicial system which is also supposedly directed toward weakening the Israeli Supreme court. Additionally, critics have said that it will affect the checks and balances as well as undermine democratic institutions by giving absolute power to the ruling party coalition, reported Associated Press.&nbsp;

The legal reforms would also limit the power and authority of the High Court of Justice to block legislation or government decisions which would otherwise be deemed discriminatory or undemocratic. However, it is the feature of the plan which has garnered controversy and it is the Override Clause which would simply allow a majority of the Members of Knesset (MK) to overrule decisions by the High Court.&nbsp;

Additionally, the government will also gain control over the selection process of judges and reportedly eliminate ministry legal advisers who are appointed by and report to the attorney general into political appointments controlled entirely by the government. Currently, the Judicial Appointments Committee includes lawmakers, from both the government and the opposition, and judges and representatives from the Israel Bar Association.

Furthermore, given that Israel does not have a written constitution, the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches of government remain&nbsp;weak since the ruling government typically holds a majority in the Parliament.&nbsp;

This makes the Supreme Court the only institution to limit the government’s power and by challenging legislation passed by a parliamentary majority, the proposed reform would remove this roadblock for the Netanyahu government. Notably, the court cannot arbitrarily dismiss legislation passed by the parliament unless they hinder one of the Basic Laws of Israel.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Netanyahu government

The Netanyahu government is said to be the most right-wing and religiously conservative in Israel’s over seven-decade history. It recently came under fire after its National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the disputed holy site in Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa mosque which drew widespread condemnation.&nbsp;

Additionally, prior to the government’s swearing-in, the coalition agreements called for legislation that would allow service providers to refuse service on the grounds of religious beliefs which many say would be legalising discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and other targeted sections in Israel.&nbsp;

This comes after the incumbent PM Netanyahu won the elections in November and took office last month with his right-wing allies who now hold key ministerial positions in the Israeli government.&nbsp;

What happened at the protests?

The protest was reportedly led by some lawmakers from Israeli parliament, the Knesset, where the local media report citing organisers said that over 10,000 protesters gathered for the rally in Tel Aviv’s Habima Square. According to media reports, protesters waved Israel and LGBTQ+ pride flags and some were seen with a Palestinian flag with placards that read, “The settler government is against me” and “Democracy in danger” and even a banner that read “crime minister”.&nbsp;

The demonstrators affiliated with&nbsp;Standing Together group and other organisations marched toward the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and held a rally there where leaders gave speeches while others carried out a torchlight march through the city streets, reported the Times of Israel. Meanwhile, others also called for peace and co-existence between Jews and Arab residents of the country.&nbsp;

Several prominent activist groups in the country even warned the government that these reforms would not be passed without unprecedented civil resistance. “This evening, friends, we have built a new democratic camp,” said the CEOs of an NGO, Breaking the Silence, Yael Lotan and Avner Gvaryahu, addressing the protestors on Saturday.&nbsp;

They added, “One that includes Jews and Arabs, men and women, straight people and LGBTQ people, secular and religious, united against one evil government and for the sake of a better future in this place,” reported the local media.&nbsp;

“Extremists and dangerous actors in the newly established government are already planning how to hurt all of us,” said an activist from NGO Standing Together, reported by the Jerusalem Post.&nbsp; 
 
They added, “How to deepen racial discrimination against Arab citizens, how to cut social budgets, how to discriminate based on gender. We won’t sit home and hold hands and give in to despair and frustration. Where there is struggle, there is also hope. And we will go out and struggle for our home.”

Meanwhile, one of the activist groups called the Black Flag movement which reportedly organised Saturday’s protests called this reform plan a “coup d’état” which will encounter a nation of Israel which is “determined to guard our democracy and will fail.” The group has also vowed to continue the protests next Saturday and said, “Today we are starting the most important journey: A preventative strike against dictatorship.”

The protests on January 7&nbsp;were followed by a rally held by activists from the Darkenu civil society movement, outside Levin’s house on Friday. The group reportedly claims that the High Court served as a “flak jacket” to protect Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers from being brought to the International Criminal Court.&nbsp;

“The Override Clause and Levin’s moves to weaken the justice system would hurt IDF soldiers, and hurting our soldiers is a red line,” said the group’s CEO and former member of Knesset Rachel Azaria, reported the Jerusalem Post.&nbsp;

The protests on Saturday witnessed the attendance of a number of MKs including Merav Michaeli and Gilad Kariv from the opposition Labor party, Aymen Odeh, chair of the predominantly Arab Hadash-Ta’al alliance, and former vice PM Tzipi Livni who expressed their support for the protesters.&nbsp;

“What energies in the square! Together with thousands of amazing demonstrators we went out to demonstrate and shout in a clear voice - our country cannot be destroyed!” said the Labour party chairperson, Michaeli on Twitter. She added, “We will continue to fight for our democracy.”&nbsp;

Israeli former supreme court president’s grim warning

Former Supreme Court president, Aharon Barak, who is also Israel’s most revered jurist, in multiple TV interviews on Saturday urged the justice minister to review these sweeping reforms. According to a report by Times of Israel, in a grim warning, he said that the proposed plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system will give all the power to the PM, leave citizens with no defence against violation of any and all of their rights, and mark the beginning of the end of the modern state of Israel as we know it.&nbsp;

“If putting me to death would put an end to this drastic shake-up…I’d be prepared to go before a firing squad,” he said in the context of his stance and verdicts as a justice from between 1978 and 2006 and the SC president for 11 years. Speaking about his time as a justice the 86-year-old said that he tried not to be overly activist nor overly conservative while delivering verdicts and took into account Israel’s history, Zionism and the country’s security needs and that he was sorry to be depicted as “the enemy of the people”, reported the Times of Israel.&nbsp;

According to the report, Barak also said that he feels like he is obligated to warn the public about the “grave danger” their rights are in and it would not matter if they are, Jew, Arab, ultra-Orthodox, or not ultra-Orthodox. Israeli democracy will be left with one branch of governance which would be the PM.&nbsp;

He also went on to explain that nobody will be protected from the political majority since the Knesset is powerless against the majority coalition, and Israel has no constitution, Bill of Rights, or even a second House, reported the Times of Israel. It will also affect Israel on an international level, Barak said, noting that the High Court has acted as a legal “Iron Dome” ensuring Israel’s democratic functioning, including in its treatment of the Palestinians.&nbsp;

If the High Court is affected by Levin's plans to weaken it, “our chief of staff and government ministers will immediately be arrested when they travel overseas…The leaders of the country will be put on trial in the International Criminal Court in The Hague,” as per Times of Israel.&nbsp;

What has Levin said about the plans?

Subsequently, even the justice minister was also interviewed on Saturday, where he said that while he respects the former top judge, he “does not understand the essence of democracy.” Levin also dismissed the idea of establishing a committee with Barak to compromise on his proposal and said that he would discuss the plan with key members of the parliament and hope that the final legislation is “as close as possible” to the proposed one, said the media report.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This comes days after his administration’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin unveiled his plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system, which opponents and critics say threaten democracy and freedom. What is the legal reform plan about? On Wednesday, the country’s justice minister announced the new government’s long-promised overhaul of the judicial system which is also supposedly directed toward weakening the Israeli Supreme court. Additionally, critics have said that it will affect the checks and balances as well as undermine democratic institutions by giving absolute power to the ruling party coalition, reported Associated Press. The legal reforms would also limit the power and authority of the High Court of Justice to block legislation or government decisions which would otherwise be deemed discriminatory or undemocratic. However, it is the feature of the plan which has garnered controversy and it is the Override Clause which would simply allow a majority of the Members of Knesset (MK) to overrule decisions by the High Court. Currently, the Judicial Appointments Committee includes lawmakers, from both the government and the opposition, and judges and representatives from the Israel Bar Association. Furthermore, given that Israel does not have a written constitution, the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches of government remain weak since the ruling government typically holds a majority in the Parliament. Notably, the court cannot arbitrarily dismiss legislation passed by the parliament unless they hinder one of the Basic Laws of Israel. Netanyahu government The Netanyahu government is said to be the most right-wing and religiously conservative in Israel’s over seven-decade history. It recently came under fire after its National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the disputed holy site in Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa mosque which drew widespread condemnation. Additionally, prior to the government’s swearing-in, the coalition agreements called for legislation that would allow service providers to refuse service on the grounds of religious beliefs which many say would be legalising discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and other targeted sections in Israel. This comes after the incumbent PM Netanyahu won the elections in November and took office last month with his right-wing allies who now hold key ministerial positions in the Israeli government. What happened at the protests? The protest was reportedly led by some lawmakers from Israeli parliament, the Knesset, where the local media report citing organisers said that over 10,000 protesters gathered for the rally in Tel Aviv’s Habima Square. According to media reports, protesters waved Israel and LGBTQ+ pride flags and some were seen with a Palestinian flag with placards that read, “The settler government is against me” and “Democracy in danger” and even a banner that read “crime minister”. Meanwhile, others also called for peace and co-existence between Jews and Arab residents of the country. Several prominent activist groups in the country even warned the government that these reforms would not be passed without unprecedented civil resistance. “This evening, friends, we have built a new democratic camp,” said the CEOs of an NGO, Breaking the Silence, Yael Lotan and Avner Gvaryahu, addressing the protestors on Saturday. They added, “One that includes Jews and Arabs, men and women, straight people and LGBTQ people, secular and religious, united against one evil government and for the sake of a better future in this place,” reported the local media. We won’t sit home and hold hands and give in to despair and frustration. Where there is struggle, there is also hope. According to a report by Times of Israel, in a grim warning, he said that the proposed plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system will give all the power to the PM, leave citizens with no defence against violation of any and all of their rights, and mark the beginning of the end of the modern state of Israel as we know it. According to the report, Barak also said that he feels like he is obligated to warn the public about the “grave danger” their rights are in and it would not matter if they are, Jew, Arab, ultra-Orthodox, or not ultra-Orthodox. Israeli democracy will be left with one branch of governance which would be the PM. He also went on to explain that nobody will be protected from the political majority since the Knesset is powerless against the majority coalition, and Israel has no constitution, Bill of Rights, or even a second House, reported the Times of Israel. It will also affect Israel on an international level, Barak said, noting that the High Court has acted as a legal “Iron Dome” ensuring Israel’s democratic functioning, including in its treatment of the Palestinians. South African police said on Thursday that the 46-year-old Israeli was a member of the Abergil gang, which deals in drug trafficking and extortion.&nbsp;The man was reportedly wanted in Israel for several attempted murders, and was on Interpol’s wanted list since 2015.

Seven others were arrested in the raid, according to the statement.

One of the vehicles seized by police was a delivery truck that had been modified to be used by a sniper and had heavy sound insulation and a chair bolted to the floor that was designed to be used for torture, the police statement said.

Authorities said that four-metre-high (13ft) walls surrounded the house. Among the items seized were 19 firearms, including five assault rifles and seven pistols; six motorcycles – three of them reported as stolen; a signal-jamming device; four drones fitted with cameras; and eight motor vehicles. Also seized were $40,000 (£34,000) in cash and 3kg of suspected crystal meth.

According to Israeli authorities, the suspect is accused of placing a&nbsp;bomb under&nbsp;the vehicle of a man in Israel on two separate occasions. As a result of the first explosion, five people sustained serious injuries.

The Abergil gang has been linked to two brothers who in 2011 were extradited to the US to face murder, money laundering and drug dealing charges.

Tasking Netanyahu, already Israel's longest-serving premier, with forming the next coalition government, President Isaac Herzog noted that the Likud leader had received enough recommendations from like-minded parties to secure majority with 64 of parliament's 120 seats.

Netanyahu is now on a path to form one of the most stable governments in years after being away from the top post for 18 months during which a rare but fragile alliance of centrist, liberal, nationalist and Arab politicians came to&nbsp;power.

Netanyahu said, “The people made a clear decision in favor of forming a government headed by me,” and vowed to form a stable, successful, responsible and dedicated government&nbsp;that would serve all of Israel’s residents, without exception.&nbsp;The remarks were televised. 
 
“There are many, many who welcome the election results, but there are also those who make outrageous prophecies and frighten the public. This is not the first time such things have been said. They said it about (Likud's first leader Menachem) Begin, they said it about me too; it wasn't true then and it's not true today either,” Netanyahu said. 
 
“I intend to be a prime minister for everyone, for those who elected me, and for those who did not elect me. It reflects what I believe in and what guides my actions,” he added while also thanking all the 64 members of the Knesset who recommended him. 
 
The incoming government looks to be the most right-wing in Israel's history, with the ultranationalist Religious Zionism party whose leaders oppose Palestinian statehood, want the occupied West Bank annexed and were anti-LGBT in the past.

One of them, Itamar Ben-Gvir, was convicted in 2007 of racist incitement against Arabs and support for terrorism. He says he is now reformed but still calls for harsh crackdowns against those he deems terrorists or traitors.

Netanyahu invited to form new government, vows to be PM for ‘all citizens’ of Israel

Among the many adverse consequences of the war in Ukraine is food inflation. With a global shortage of grain and skyrocketing wheat prices, coupled with the energy crisis across the world, many countries are facing inflation.

According to a report by the UK’s Money magazine, Israel is already the sixth most expensive country in the world for groceries. And on Monday, it was announced that prices are set to increase even further… with the cost of buying what many consider the bare necessity, bread, is expected to rise by up to 21 per cent.

The Bnei Brak, which is a largely ultra-orthodox community with around 180,000 residents, is also one of the poorest cities in Israel. In 2022, it was ranked Israel’s most densely populated city, with 28,000 people per square kilometre.

It is ranked the fourth most densely populated city in the world, with an average of seven children per family. The cost of feeding these large families is set to rise this summer, and again in December.

The price of white bread in the region is increasing by 5 per cent instead of the planned 36 per cent. However, come December and the price of standard bread would jump by 21 per cent.

It comes as Israel's annual inflation rate has risen to 4.4 per cent which is the highest in the last 11 years.

The baking industry argues that the price hikes are necessary to prevent thousands of people from losing their jobs, and are not significant for consumers.

But it’s not just bread prices that are going up. The price of government-supervised eggs went up by 6.5 per cent at the start of July. For perspective, the last egg price rise was only by 1.44 per cent in 2019. And dairy products that are under government price regulation have also recently increased &nbsp;by 4.9 per cent.&nbsp;

While the government has limited bread price hikes for now, the price of bread would be going up gradually, with the next hike scheduled for after the forthcoming election. Prime Minister Lapid has asked ministers to provide a plan to tackle rising grocery bills.

In the meantime, however, it appears that many people may be left struggling to cope with food bills even more at the end of the month. And the rising cost of living and food insecurity may become key issues in the upcoming election.

The Bnei Brak, which is a largely ultra-orthodox community with around 180,000 residents, is also one of the poorest cities in Israel. In 2022, it was ranked Israel’s most densely populated city, with 28,000 people per square kilometre. It is ranked the fourth most densely populated city in the world, with an average of seven children per family. The cost of feeding these large families is set to rise this summer, and again in December. The price of white bread in the region is increasing by 5 per cent instead of the planned 36 per cent. However, come December and the price of standard bread would jump by 21 per cent. It comes as Israel's annual inflation rate has risen to 4.4 per cent which is the highest in the last 11 years. The baking industry argues that the price hikes are necessary to prevent thousands of people from losing their jobs, and are not significant for consumers. But it’s not just bread prices that are going up. The price of government-supervised eggs went up by 6.5 per cent at the start of July. For perspective, the last egg price rise was only by 1.44 per cent in 2019. And dairy products that are under government price regulation have also recently increased by 4.9 per cent. While the government has limited bread price hikes for now, the price of bread would be going up gradually, with the next hike scheduled for after the forthcoming election. Prime Minister Lapid has asked ministers to provide a plan to tackle rising grocery bills. In the meantime, however, it appears that many people may be left struggling to cope with food bills even more at the end of the month. The design was created by an Indian student, Nikhil Kumar Rai, a student of the National Institute of Design and also of BHU.&nbsp;

In India, the Gateway of India will be lit up in Mumbai. Israel also has a consulate in the city.&nbsp;

In Israel, the iconic Masada fortress, which overlooks the dead sea, will be lit up.&nbsp;

This is a strong show of support from the West Asian country, which sees India as a strategic partner.&nbsp;

Founded in the first century BC, it is one of Israel's most popular attractions. Other than this, the year will see high-profile visits, including by the Israeli foreign minister and the Prime Minister of India.

Israel will today officially start the process of joining the India based International Solar Alliance (ISA).&nbsp;

Based out of Gurugram, ISA has 124 countries as its members and aims to harness solar energy to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.&nbsp;

Israel's energy minister Karine Elharrar will officially sign the agreement on her country's accession to the International Solar Alliance in the presence of Israeli Foreign minister Yair Lapid and Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.

ISA was launched by Indian PM Modi and the then French President, Francois Hollande, at the Paris climate summit in 2015.&nbsp;

The fourth assembly of the alliance is on October 20 and will see an address by US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, European Commission Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal, Frans Timmermans.

India's external affairs minister, Dr S Jaishankar, is in Israel currently, his first visit in his current capacity. On the first day, he met members of the Israeli chambers of commerce and interacted with the Indian Jewish Community and Indologists.&nbsp;

During his address to the Indian Jewish community, he highlighted, the role of Jews in India — David Sassoon was the founder of Bank of India, one of the lawyers who defended Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 2016 was David Erulkar, who was a Jew, Dr Jerusha Jhirad who was awarded Padma Shri was a Jew.&nbsp;

He said, "People of my generation grew up with the signature tune of All India Radio that was composed by a Jewish exile in India, Walter Kauffman".

The visit is part of increased engagement between the Indian and Israeli governments.&nbsp;

A spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in India, Muhamed Heib, said, "The visit will mark the beginning of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and it will include high-level meetings. We look forward to a successful visit during which agreements will be signed, and the strategic partnership between the two countries will be strengthened".

The Israeli army has recaptured the last two Palestinian fugitives involved in a spectacular jailbreak earlier this month, it announced Sunday.

At the beginning of September, six Palestinian inmates escaped Gilboa prison in Israel's north, through a tunnel dug under a sink in a cell, reportedly using tools including a spoon.

Israel launched a massive manhunt, deploying drones, road checkpoints and pouring troops into the occupied West Bank. &nbsp;

Authorities had already arrested four of the six, and in a tweet on Sunday the Israel Defence Forces said the last two had surrendered "after being surrounded by security forces that acted precisely based on accurate intelligence".

The men, 35-year-old Ayham&nbsp;Kamamji and 26-year-old Munadel Infeiat, are both members of Islamic Jihad, an armed Palestinian Islamist movement.

They were arrested in a joint operation with counterterrorism forces in Jenin, in the West Bank, the army said in a short statement to the press, adding that they were "currently being interrogated".&nbsp;

Originally from Kafr Dan, near Jenin, Kamamji was arrested in 2006 and jailed for life for the kidnap and murder of a young Israeli settler, Eliahu Asheri.

Islamic Jihad said Kamamji suffered abdominal and intestinal illness in jail and was subject to "medical negligence" by prison authorities.

Infeiat, arrested last year, had been jailed multiple times previously for his role in the armed group, and was awaiting sentencing at the time of the escape.

The other four men recaptured last week included Mahmoud Abdullah Ardah, the alleged mastermind of the escape, and Zakaria Zubeidi, a former militant leader of the Fatah movement.

In Tel Aviv, Avital Fast said he wanted to be optimistic about the ceasefire. "I hope that it will remain because the only thing that we want here is to live our life without any alarms or fire."

The truce brokered by Egypt, which also included Gaza's second-most powerful armed group, Islamic Jihad, was agreed upon following mounting international pressure to stem the bloodshed which erupted on May 10.

“It is an identity crisis,” Kleinman, 33, said. “Very small in comparison to what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank, but it is still something very strange and weird.”

As the violence escalates in the Middle East, turmoil of a different kind is growing across the Atlantic. Many young American Jews are confronting the region’s long-standing strife in a very different context, with very different pressures, from their parents’ and grandparents’ generations.

Many Jews in America remain unreservedly supportive of Israel and its government. In suburban Livingston, New Jersey, Meara Ashtivker, 38, has been afraid for her father-in-law in Israel, who has a disability and is not able to rush to the stairwell to shelter when he hears the air-raid sirens. Ashtivker, whose husband is Israeli, said she loved and supported Israel, even when she did not always agree with the government and its actions.

“It’s really hard being an American Jew right now,” she said. “It is exhausting and scary.”

Some young, liberal Jewish activists have found common cause with Black Lives Matter, which explicitly advocates for Palestinian liberation, concerning others who see that allegiance as anti-Semitic.

The recent turmoil is the first major outbreak of violence in Israel and Gaza for which Aviva Davis, who graduated this spring from Brandeis University, has been “socially conscious.”

“I’m on a search for the truth, but what’s the truth when everyone has a different way of looking at things?” Davis said.

Alyssa Rubin, 26, who volunteers in Boston with IfNotNow, a network of Jewish activists who want to end Jewish American support for Israeli occupation, has found protesting for the Palestinian cause to be its own form of religious observance.

She said she and her 89-year-old grandfather ultimately both want the same thing, Jewish safety. But “he is really entrenched in this narrative that the only way we can be safe is by having a country,” she said, while her generation has seen that “the inequality has become more exacerbated.”

In the protest movements last summer, “a whole new wave of people were really primed to see the connection and understand racism more explicitly,” she said, “understanding the ways racism plays out here, and then looking at Israel/Palestine and realizing it is the exact same system.”

But that comparison is exactly what worries many other American Jews, who say the history of white American slaveholders is not the correct frame for viewing the Israeli government or the global Jewish experience of oppression.

In Colorado, a high school senior at Denver Jewish Day School said he was frustrated at the lack of nuance in the public conversation. When his social media apps filled with pro-Palestinian memes last week, slogans like “From the river to the sea” and “Zionism is a call for an apartheid state,” he deactivated his accounts.

“The conversation is so unproductive, and so aggressive, that it really stresses you out,” Jonas Rosenthal, 18, said. “I don’t think that using that message is helpful for convincing the Israelis to stop bombing Gaza.”

Compared with their elders, younger American Jews are overrepresented on the ends of the religious affiliation spectrum: a higher share are secular, and a higher share are Orthodox.

Ari Hart, 39, an Orthodox rabbi in Skokie, Illinois, has accepted the fact that his Zionism makes him unwelcome in some activist spaces where he would otherwise be comfortable. College students in his congregation are awakening to that same tension, he said. “You go to a college campus and want to get involved in anti-racism or social justice work, but if you support the state of Israel, you’re the problem,” he said.

Hart sees increasing scepticism in liberal Jewish circles over Israel’s right to exist. “This is a generation who are very moved and inspired by social justice causes and want to be on the right side of justice,” Hart said. “But they’re falling into overly simplistic narratives, and narratives driven by true enemies of the Jewish people.”

Overall, younger American Jews are less attached to Israel than older generations: About half of Jewish adults under 30 describe themselves as emotionally connected to Israel, compared with about two-thirds of Jews over age 64, according to a major survey published last week by the Pew Research Center.

And though the US&nbsp;Jewish population is 92% white, with all other races combined accounting for 8%, among Jews ages 18 to 29 that rises to 15%.

In Los Angeles, Rachel Sumekh, 29, a first-generation Iranian American Jew, sees complicated layers in the story of her own Persian family. Her mother escaped Iran on the back of a camel, traveling by night until she got to Pakistan, where she was taken in as a refugee. She then found asylum in Israel. She believes Israel has a right to self-determination, but she also found it “horrifying” to hear an Israeli ambassador suggest other Arab countries should take in Palestinians.

“That is what happened to my people and created this intergenerational trauma of losing our homeland because of hatred,” she said.

The entire situation feels too volatile and dangerous for many people to even want to discuss, especially publicly.

Last year the third-highest number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States were recorded since the Anti-Defamation League began cataloging them in 1979, according to a report released by the civil rights group last month.
