Israel has postponed the release of over 600 Palestinian prisoners, citing concerns over the "humiliating" nature of hostage handover ceremonies conducted by Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the prisoner release would remain on hold until Hamas guarantees the cessation of such ceremonies and ensures the safe return of additional hostages.

Five of six hostages slated for release handed over to IDF; Hamas says it’s ‘ready’ for next phase

Hamas handed over a body it claimed belonged to Israeli hostage Shiri Bibas late at&nbsp;night on Friday (Feb 21) after a misidentification nearly disrupted the fragile Gaza ceasefire agreement. The Red Cross says it has given the remains to Israel and medical authorities are now conducting forensic tests to confirm the identity.
As per Israel's army radio report, the body was identified overnight by forensic specialists as Shiri Bibas.
The Palestinian militant group had agreed to hand over the bodies of Shiri Bibas, her two sons, Kfir and Ariel, and another hostage, Oded Lifshitz, under the ongoing ceasefire deal. While the identity of the bodies of the Bibas boys and Lifshitz was confirmed, the fourth body was found to be an unidentified Gazan woman, not Shiri Bibas.

Hamas official Basem Naim accepted the error, blaming the ongoing war for making proper identification difficult.
"Unfortunate mistakes can happen, especially with Israeli bombing mixing the bodies of hostages and Palestinians, thousands of whom remain buried in the rubble," he said. He added that Hamas had no interest in withholding bodies or violating agreements.

Israel confirms receiving Shiri Bibas’ remains in overnight handover by Hamas

For the first time since the war began, Hamas handed over the bodies of Israeli hostages as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal. But what started as a moment of anxious hope quickly turned into devastation.
Hamas on Thursday (Feb 20) revealed black coffins in southern Gaza, displaying the names and photos of Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, pinned to the casket.

According to Hamas, the bodies handed over include those of Oded Lifshitz, 83, along with 32-year-old Shiri Bibas and her two children, who were just nine months and four years old when they were taken hostage.
Shiri and her boys were kidnapped from their home in Nir Oz on October 7, 2023. Her husband, Yarden, was taken separately after he left their safe room in an effort to protect his family. He was eventually freed on February 1.
Just hours after Hamas announced it would be returning the bodies, Shiri&rsquo;s sister-in-law, Ofri Bibas Levy, refused to give up hope.
&ldquo;I ask you not to eulogise my family yet. We have been hoping for 16 months and we will not give up hope now,&rdquo; she wrote on Facebook.
For the family of Oded Lifshitz, the news was just as crushing. &ldquo;For 502 days, we hoped and prayed for a different ending,&rdquo; they said in a statement.

&ldquo;Until we receive absolute certainty, our journey will not end. And even after that, we will continue to fight until the last hostage is returned,&rdquo; they added.
Oded&rsquo;s son, Yizhar Lifshitz, spoke to the Ynet news outlet on Wednesday, saying that while all signs pointed to his father&rsquo;s body being returned, he could not accept it until there was complete confirmation.
&ldquo;As his son, I would have preferred to know that he was murdered on October 7 outside his home in Nir Oz, rather than having to go through all this suffering and torture and be alone and die like a dog there in Gaza,&rdquo; he said.
He described his father&rsquo;s fate as &ldquo;tragic and humiliating.&rdquo; His home was burned down, and his wife, Yocheved, was kidnapped and beaten. &ldquo;His life ended in an undeserved, degrading way&hellip; without family, without children, without closure,&rdquo; Yizhar added.

<h2>Controversy over names of the deceased being made public</h2>
Shortly after the names of the deceased were made public, tensions flared. The Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office (PMO) said that the families had approved the release of the names&mdash;but the Bibas family denied this.
&ldquo;The list that has already turned Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir into fallen [hostages], published by the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office supposedly with the families&rsquo; approval, did not even pass our approval,&rdquo; Ofri Bibas wrote on Facebook.
&ldquo;We have been waiting for 16 months for certainty that they could not give us, and now it&rsquo;s been decided before they are even here? Before they have been identified? Before we have been informed?&rdquo;
A PMO official later blamed the military for the mistake, calling it a &ldquo;grave error&rdquo; by IDF liaison officers.
&ldquo;This was an unfortunate human error,&rdquo; the official admitted, explaining that the officers had incorrectly given approval for the names to be released before the family had been informed.
The IDF took responsibility, saying, &ldquo;We regret the mistake that was made in good faith toward the families and the emotional distress.&rdquo;

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Sunday (Feb 16) to discuss the ongoing Gaza ceasefire and regional security concerns.
This marked the first stop of Rubio&rsquo;s Middle East tour, which came just a day after the latest hostage-prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas.
<h2>'Greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House'</h2>
At the start of their joint press briefing, Netanyahu praised former US President Donald Trump, calling him &ldquo;the greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House.&rdquo; He also described his meeting with Rubio as &ldquo;very productive&rdquo; and added that no issue was more pressing than Iran.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that it had received the names of three hostages to be released by Palestinian militants.&nbsp;

The hostages being released include Israeli-Russian Sasha Trupanov, Israeli-American Sagui Dekel-Chen and Israeli-Argentinian Yair Horn, the office said in a statement on Friday.
Under the "prisoner exchange deal, the (Ezzedine) Al-Qassam Brigades have decided to release the following Israeli prisoners (hostages) tomorrow, Saturday," Abu Obeida, spokesman for the armed wing wrote on Telegram.&nbsp;

‘Blatant violation of ceasefire’: Hamas indefinitely delays hostage exchange; Israel asks military to ‘be prepared’

US President Donald Trump in an interview excerpt released on Monday (Feb 10) said that Palestinians would not have the right to return to Gaza under his proposal for the United States to assume control of the region.
"No, they wouldn&rsquo;t, because they&rsquo;re going to have much better housing. In other words, I&rsquo;m talking about building a permanent place for them," Trump told Bret Baier of Fox News when asked if Palestinians would be allowed to return.

Previously, while speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to having the US acquire Gaza once its Palestinians had either left or been removed. He suggested that reconstruction efforts could be led by other nations in the region.
"I&rsquo;m committed to buying and owning Gaza. As far as us rebuilding it, we may give it to other states in the Middle East to build sections of it. Other people may do it through our auspices. But we&rsquo;re committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn&rsquo;t move back. There&rsquo;s nothing to move back into. The place is a demolition site. Last week, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Trump</a> detailed his plan, which involved the US taking control of Gaza, relocating its Palestinian population elsewhere, and transforming the region into the "Riviera of the Middle East." He introduced the plan alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said that the idea was "worth listening carefully to."
The proposal has been widely criticised by both Western and Arab allies. The United Nations Chief described it as 'ethnic cleansing' of Gaza.

Hamas reacted to the plan by stating that the US President's plan "will only put oil in the fire." The Palestinian militant group added, "Our Palestinian people... will not allow any state in the world to occupy our land or impose guardianship on our great Palestinian people who have offered rivers of blood to liberate our land from occupation and to establish our state with Jerusalem as its capital."
Saudi Arabia&rsquo;s foreign ministry also rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians from their land.

‘Committed to buying, owning Gaza’: Trump says Palestinians have no right to return under Gaza ‘takeover’ plan

US President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> voiced his growing frustration with the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas on Sunday (Feb 9) after seeing the latest hostage handover by Hamas over the weekend.
"They look like Holocaust survivors. They were in horrible condition. They were emaciated," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to New Orleans for the Super Bowl.

He warned that patience was running thin, saying, "I don't know how much longer we can take that ... at some point we're going to lose our patience."
Referring to the slow release of Israeli hostages, Trump added, "I know we have a deal ... they dribble in and keep dribbling in ... but they are in really bad shape."
Among those freed on Saturday were Ohad Ben Ami and Eli Sharabi, who had been abducted from Kibbutz Be'eri during Hamas' attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, along with Or Levy, who was taken from the Nova music festival that same day.
The three men were led onto a Hamas podium by gunmen before being transferred to the Red Cross officials.

The condition of these hostages appeared notably worse than the 18 others previously released under the truce. Many Palestinian prisoners freed by Israel have also looked malnourished and frail.
Michal Cohen, mother-in-law of released hostage Ohad Ben Ami, speaking to Channel 13 News, said, "He looked like a skeleton, it was awful to see."

Trump's comments following the release of the three visibly gaunt hostages have cast further doubt over the fate of the ceasefire agreement.

But we’re committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn’t move back. There’s nothing to move back into. The place is a demolition site. The remainder will be demolished,” he told reporters. (With inputs from agencies)

Trump reacts to ‘horrible condition’ of Israeli hostages, says US will ‘lose patience’ with Gaza ceasefire

Israeli troops on Sunday (Feb 9) withdrew from the Netzarim Corridor, a military zone that had divided the northern and southern regions of the Gaza Strip.
Following the withdrawal, hundreds of Palestinians, using cars and carts loaded with mattresses and other belongings, began making their way back to northern Gaza.
This move aligns with the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, reached on 19 January. As part of the agreement, 21 Israeli hostages and 566 Palestinian prisoners have been released so far.

By the end of the initial phase of the truce in three weeks, a total of 33 hostages and 1,900 prisoners are expected to be freed. Israel has said that eight of these hostages are deceased.
At the start of the war, roughly 700,000 people from northern Gaza fled south after Israeli forces issued evacuation orders ahead of their ground invasion. Many were later displaced multiple times as Israeli troops advanced into southern Gaza as well.
For months, returning to northern Gaza was impossible due to the Netzarim Corridor, which extended from the Gaza-Israel border to the Mediterranean Sea.
However, last month, Israeli troops partially withdrew from the western section of the corridor, allowing some Palestinians to walk to enter northern Gaza.

While the Israel Defense Forces have not formally commented on Sunday&rsquo;s withdrawal from the eastern section of the corridor, this latest pull-out means Israel will continue to control Gaza&rsquo;s borders but not the central road that previously divided the territory.
<h2>Israel sends negotiators back to Qatar for next stage of ceasefire talks</h2>
The withdrawal also comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked negotiators to return to Qatar for further ceasefire discussions with Hamas. This decision follows the completion of the fifth hostage-prisoner exchange under the ceasefire.
Previously, the Israeli government said that the initial talks would focus on "technical matters" related to the first phase of the ceasefire agreement rather than the more complex second phase.

Palestinians return north after Israel withdraws from Netzarim Corridor that split Gaza in two

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which is overseeing ongoing hostage-prisoner exchanges between Israel and Hamas under the Gaza ceasefire agreement, has called for future exchanges to be conducted in private.
In a statement released on Saturday, following the fifth exchange, the ICRC expressed deep concern about the circumstances surrounding the releases. "The ICRC is increasingly concerned about the conditions surrounding release operations. We strongly urge all parties, including the mediators, to take responsibility to ensure that future releases are dignified and private," the statement read.

This appeal follows public backlash from Israeli families and officials over the latest hostage exchange, where disturbing images of released captives emerged.
The three men released appeared visibly frail, pale, and in noticeably poorer health compared to the 18 hostages previously freed under the ceasefire agreement established last month.
In a further display of force, Hamas, which has previously showcased its fighters during these exchanges, deployed dozens of militants in central Gaza as hostages were handed over to the ICRC.
Michal Cohen, the mother-in-law of released hostage Ohad Ben Ami, told Channel 13 News, "He looked like a skeleton, it was awful to see." The handover, orchestrated by Hamas, included a masked individual questioning the hostages while armed militants stood guard on either side.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the 'shocking images' and vowed action. "We will not go into the agenda about the shocking sights we saw today. The shocking images we saw today will not pass without response," his office said.

The Hostage Families Forum likened the appearance of the released captives to Holocaust survivors. "We have to get ALL THE HOSTAGES out of hell," the group said.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa&rsquo;ar criticised the global narrative surrounding Gaza, arguing that the true victims of starvation are the hostages. "For over a year, the entire international community has danced to the tune of the false propaganda of so-called &lsquo;starvation&rsquo; in Gaza," Sa&rsquo;ar stated in a post on X.

Before he meets with Trump, Netanyahu is scheduled to hold discussions with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on Monday. Witkoff, who played a key role in negotiating the ceasefire alongside Qatari and Egyptian officials, is expected to help shape the next phase of negotiations.
Netanyahu&rsquo;s office has confirmed that his talks with Witkoff in Washington will serve as the formal launch of further negotiations. The US envoy is also expected to engage with Qatari and Egyptian officials this week. Following these discussions, he and Netanyahu will likely coordinate on sending delegations to advance talks on the next phase of the ceasefire.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to see an end to conflicts in the Middle East. Speaking on Sunday, he said that ceasefire discussions were "progressing" and mentioned "big meetings" planned with Netanyahu.

A second Hamas official stated that they were "waiting for the mediators to initiate the next round."
The ceasefire agreement, which began on 19 January, outlines a two-phase process. The first phase involves the release of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for approximately 1,900 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli detention. So far, 13 Israeli and five Thai hostages have been released in exchange for 583 Palestinian prisoners.
The upcoming second phase is expected to address the release of remaining hostages and could include discussions aimed at securing a more permanent resolution to the conflict.

Netanyahu to discuss Gaza ceasefire with President Trump during ‘historic’ US visit

Australia had Sri Lanka three down after opener Usman Khawaja's first double century and a ton on debut by Josh Inglis helped the tourists to declare at 654-6 in the first match on Thursday.
<h2>Josh Inglis stars for Australia</h2>
Sri Lanka were 44-3 by stumps on day two at Galle with senior batsmen Dinesh Chandimal on nine and Kamindu Mendis on 13 when rain stopped play.
Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann struck first to have Oshada Fernando out lbw, and soon pace spearhead Mitchell Starc got Dimuth Karunaratne caught at gully. Both batsmen made seven.
Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon then sent back former skipper Angelo Mathews out for eight as Travis Head took a diving catch at short leg.
Khawaja's 266-run third-wicket partnership with Steve Smith, who hit 141 in a landmark innings that got the stand-in skipper to 10,000 Test runs, stood out after Australia elected to bat first at the start of the two-match series.
It was the first time the tourists had breached the 600-run mark in Sri Lanka, surpassing their previous Asian high of 617, posted in Pakistan in 1980.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey was unbeaten on 46 with Mitchell Starc on 19 when Smith declared the first innings in the final session.
Inglis made it count when he walked in after Smith departed on 141.
He made 102 and with Khawaja kept up the batting surge in a 146-run stand to tire out the opposition attack.
Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya broke the partnership to get Khawaja caught behind as the opener walked back after 352 balls that included 16 fours and one six.
Inglis jumped in delight and punched the air as he reached his ton off 90 balls.
But he got out in the next over as he gave away a catch to short cover off Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya and fellow spinner Jeffrey Vandersay took three wickets each as Sri Lanka toiled for 154 overs.
The tourists resumed on 330-2 as overnight batsmen Khawaja and Smith frustrated the opposition attack on a sunny morning.
Khawaja took a single off Jayasuriya to reach 200 as he removed his helmet, raised his bat, and dropped down to kiss the turf while teammates and fans stood up to applaud.
His previous best was an unbeaten 195 against South Africa in 2023 at Sydney, and he is now the first Australian batsman to make a double ton in Sri Lanka.

Islamic Jihad releases video of Israeli hostages Arbel Yehud

Eight of the hostages expected to be freed in the initial stage of a truce between Israel and Hamas have died, Israeli government spokesman David Mencer confirmed on Monday (Jan 27).
&ldquo;The families have been informed of the situation of their relatives,&rdquo; Mencer told reporters, without disclosing the identities of the deceased.
This leaves only 18 of the 26 hostages set to be released in the first phase of the agreement still alive.
The ceasefire, which was declared earlier in January after months of unsuccessful negotiations, began on January 19. It marked the end of over 15 months of conflict triggered by Hamas&rsquo;s attack on October 7, 2023.

<h2>Displaced Palestinians make their way back to northern Gaza</h2>
Meanwhile, displaced Palestinians began making their way back to northern Gaza on Monday, January 27, as confirmed by Palestine&rsquo;s interior ministry. Images shared on social media showed thousands of people traversing sandy roads amidst the devastation caused by over a year of Israeli strikes.
&ldquo;The passage of displaced Palestinians has begun along the Al-Rashid Road via the western part of the Netzarim checkpoint towards Gaza City and the northern part&rdquo; of the Gaza Strip, an official told AFP.

Tensions flared on Saturday when thousands of Palestinians gathered at the Netzarim Corridor, only to be blocked by Israeli forces. Israel claimed that Hamas had breached the agreement by failing to include Arbel Yehoud, an Israeli civilian, in the scheduled hostage release.
Hamas countered the allegation, accusing Israel of violating the truce by preventing displaced Palestinians from returning north. The group stated it had provided &ldquo;all the necessary guarantees&rdquo; for Yehoud&rsquo;s release.

This leaves only 18 of the 26 hostages set to be released in the first phase of the agreement still alive. This morning, long lines formed near the Netzarim Corridor as thousands of Palestinians prepared to return to their homes in the north. Israel opened the crossing to pedestrians at 07:00 local time (05:00 GMT), while vehicles were allowed to start travelling north from 09:00 (07:00 GMT).
Personnel from the Red Cross, as well as American and Egyptian teams, were present at the site, with Israeli forces overseeing the situation from a short distance. However, the process has been moving at a very slow pace. For the thousands of vehicles waiting in line to return, it may take several days to complete the journey.

While many have begun the journey home, some remain hesitant. My brother called and said not to come. The houses are demolished to the ground. People are sleeping on the streets and nobody is helping them,&rdquo; he told the BBC.

On Saturday, thousands of Palestinians gathered at the Netzarim Corridor, a narrow strip of land controlled by Israel that divides the territory, hoping to return home under the terms of the recent ceasefire.
However, Israeli forces erected roadblocks and, in some cases, opened fire on those attempting to return, killing at least one person. Israel accused Hamas of violating the agreement by failing to include Arbel Yehoud, an Israeli civilian, in Saturday&rsquo;s scheduled hostage release.
Hamas countered that preventing returns to the north was itself a breach of the truce, added that it had provided &ldquo;all the necessary guarantees&rdquo; for Yehoud&rsquo;s release.
In the early hours of Monday, Qatar, acting as mediator, announced that a new agreement had been reached. The deal stipulates that Yehoud will be released before Friday, along with two other hostages, and that Palestinians will be permitted to cross the corridor starting Monday morning.

'Born again': Mixed emotions as Palestinians return to 'demolished' homes in northern Gaza

The Israel-Hamas conflict has left Gaza in a state of catastrophic destruction, with an estimated 60 years of development lost. Nearly two-thirds of the region's buildings have been damaged or completely destroyed, amounting to an overwhelming 42 million tonnes of rubble.

UN warns of massive struggles in Gaza's reconstruction

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office on Sunday (Jan 26) announced that the Palestinian militant group Hamas will release six hostages this week, including Arbel Yehud, whose absence in prior releases had delayed the return of Palestinians to northern Gaza.&nbsp;
This comes as Netanyahu announced that he would not allow the passage of Gazans northward through the Netzarim Corridor&mdash;until the issue of the return of Arbel Yehud is resolved.

<h2>Row over Arbel Yehud</h2>
Israel wanted Yehud, who is a civilian, to be among the hostages who were released by the Hamas on Saturday (Jan 25). The militant group however released four female Israeli soldiers instead.
The ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on 19 January, has already seen the exchange of seven hostages and over 200 Palestinian prisoners. Israel, however, claimed Hamas "breached" the deal by not releasing civilian hostages first.&nbsp;

"Hamas has backtracked and will carry out an additional phase of releasing hostages this Thursday," Netanyahu's office said in a statement confirming that three hostages would be freed on Thursday, with three more set for release on Saturday.
<h2>Return to Northern Gaza</h2>
Israel also said it would allow displaced Gazans to return north of the Netzarim Corridor starting Monday at 07:00 local time (09:00 GMT). This seven-kilometre stretch is controlled by Israel and cuts off north Gaza from the rest of the territory.&nbsp;

The resolution of the dispute over Yehud's release comes after proof of her wellbeing was provided to Egyptian mediators as early as Saturday evening, reports BBC. This breakthrough came hours after US President Donald Trump proposed relocating Gazans to Egypt and Jordan&mdash;an idea condemned by Palestinian leaders and firmly rejected by both countries. &nbsp;
The January ceasefire has paused violence that was triggered by Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, which left 1,200 dead and resulted in 251 hostages taken to Gaza. So far, in the war, over 47,200 Palestinian deaths have been reported.
