US-Iran War: Is 2022 The Right Playbook For How Iran Crisis Plays Out?

Israel's strikes on 30 Iranian fuel depots Saturday went far beyond what the U.S. expected when Israel notified it in advance, sparking the first significant disagreement between the allies since the war began eight days ago, according to a U.S. official, Israeli official and a source with knowledge.

Israel-Iran War: US Uneasy After Israel Hits Iranian Fuel Depot?

Amid the escalated conflict between Iran and the US, a video has been accessed by the New York Times, which suggests that a US Tomahawk cruise missile struck a naval base near an elementary school in Iran, where over 150 young girls were in the school. A total of 175 people were killed in the strike. The footage was originally released by Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency and was verified. It reportedly showed a Tomahawk missile hitting a naval facility in the town of Minab on February 28. The strike occurred near the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school. The building was severely damaged. As per the report, the footage was filmed from a construction site opposite the naval base and shows a missile striking a building described as a medical clinic within the IRGC facility. The clip also showed large clouds of dust and smoke near the school. Also read: No timeline to end Iran war? The newspaper said it verified the footage by comparing visible landmarks, including a dirt path, grassy terrain and debris piles, with satellite imagery captured in the days after the strikes. The report cited weapon experts and said the missiles were identified as a Tomahawk cruise missile, a long-range precision weapon used by the US military. Tomahawk is a long-range missile and is capable of travelling about 1,000 miles and carrying warheads with explosive power equivalent to roughly 300 pounds.
What did Trump say?
The findings in the report contradict the statement by US President Donald Trump, who had said earlier that Iran may have been responsible for the strike that damaged the school. “No. In my opinion and based on what I’ve seen, that was done by Iran,” Trump said, adding that Iranian munitions were “very inaccurate.”

When the US-Iran war started, a missile hit the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school, which was near a naval base in Iran. 150 girls were among the 175 people killed in the strike. Now, a report said the strike could be by a US missile.

There’s intense debate over the endgame of the U.S.-Iran conflict under President Donald Trump, and it hasn’t been clearly defined even by the administration itself. Trump’s public statements have shifted over time - from degrading Iran’s missile and nuclear capabilities to asserting that Iran must unconditionally surrender and suggesting that the war’s end will be a joint decision with Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli strikes on 30 Iranian fuel depots on Saturday left the United States stunned, according to an Axios report. A US official, an Israeli official and a source with knowledge told the outlet that even though Washington was notified about the strikes before they happened, American officials were surprised to see how widely they spread. According to an Israeli official, the US told Israel, “WTF” after witnessing how much the flames spread. The US is not happy with the attack as it fears it could backfire in its bid to remove the regime. Hitting Israeli strikes on infrastructure serving ordinary Iranians could lead people to start backing the regime. They also fear that the horrifying visuals could create panic and drive up oil prices. Tehran was shrouded in thick smoke after Israel hit the fuel depots, igniting fires visible for miles.
Not a good idea to attack oil depots, Trump official said
To back the strikes, Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that the depots are "used by the Iranian regime to supply fuel to different consumers, including its military organs." It added that the strikes were a warning to Israel and deter attacks on Israeli civilian infrastructure. Israel told the US about attacking the fuel depots in advance, but the latter did not anticipate their scale. "We don't think it was a good idea," a senior US official said. A Trump adviser told Axios that the president is not happy with the attack on the depots. They aren't oil production facilities, but US officials are concerned that visuals of depots on fire could trigger panic in the oil market and push prices further up. "The president doesn't like the attack. He wants to save the oil. He doesn't want to burn it. And it reminds people of higher gas prices," the official told the outlet. Also Read: ‘We will not target Iran's energy sector, infrastructure’: US Energy Secretary Chris Wright https://www.wionews.com/videos/us-iran-war-iraqi-oil-production-collapses-with-the-strait-of-hormuz-blocked-1773042256834/embed Meanwhile, Iran has warned that if the enemy continues to hit the country's infrastructure, it would respond with similar strikes in the region. This could raise oil prices to $200 a barrel. The Iran war has continued unabated since starting over a week ago. Trump has warned of further strikes and said "something big" was coming up. While the president earlier said the conflict could last for 4-5 weeks, reports suggest that the Pentagon is preparing for a war that could last seven months.

The United States and Israel’s strikes on Iran have put unprecedented stress on Western alliances — especially within North Atlantic Treaty Organization and among European governments. While Washington pushes its campaign against Tehran, many European leaders are resisting calls to join offensive operations, focusing instead on defense, diplomacy, and avoiding broader conflict.

European capitals have issued measured statements condemning Iranian attacks and underscoring the need for restraint and a negotiated solution, rather than deeper military engagement. Some NATO members have strengthened defensive postures and missile defenses to protect allied territory, but have stopped short of committing troops or joining strikes.

Although the name hasn’t been officially announced, multiple sources say Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the slain leader, is being touted as the most likely candidate to assume the country’s highest political and religious authority.

Trump administration is facing mounting questions over how far the United States will go in the escalating war against Iran — including whether American ground forces could be sent into Tehran.

While Trump insists ground troops are not currently being considered, he refuses to rule out future deployment if deemed necessary, saying moving them in would require a “very good reason.” This comes as U.S. and Israel strikes intensify, Iranian retaliation continues, and concerns mount about broader Middle East escalation.

The Iranian body, tasked with selecting the new supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, said that it has reached a decision on Sunday (Mar 8). However, the members have not announced the name of the new leader yet. This comes after US President Donald Trump suggested that he wanted a role in the selection of the country’s leadership, saying that he had some names in mind for a “good leader”. Tehran has rejected Trump’s demands, while its military vowed to target “any successor and anyone seeking to appoint one”.“The most suitable candidate, approved by the majority of the Assembly of Experts, has been determined,” said Mohsen Heydari, a member of the selection body who represents Khuzestan province, according to Iran's ISNA news agency.Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, another member of the body confirmed that “a firm opinion reflecting the majority view has been reached,” according to a video carried by Iran’s Fars news agency. The members have said that the secretariat of the body will announce the name later. This comes after the US and Israeli forces on February 28 launched strikes on Iran, killing Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei and several other top Iranian officials. The operation was named ‘Epic Fury’ by the US and ‘Lion’s Roar’ by Israel. The attacks came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and ongoing talks over Iran’s nuclear program. In retaliation, Iran launched attacks on Israel and US military bases in the region, including in Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday (Mar 8) said that his country “will be forced to respond” if a neighbouring nation attacks or attempts to invade Iran. In a statement aired on the state TV, Pezeshkian added that the Iranian regime does not have a dispute with its neighbours, nor does it wish harm to its people, but would respond out of necessity. This comes a day after Pezeshkian apologised to Gulf nations, saying that his country will not target its neighbours unless attacked. However, just hours later, Iran’s hardline judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, who is also a member of the interim leadership council, said on Saturday that the Islamic Republic would continue targeting its regional neighbours, offering its enemies “points... used in aggression against our country”.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Jakarta’s foreign ministry on Saturday (Mar 7) said that three Indonesian crew members were missing after a United Arab Emirates-flagged tugboat sank in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday (Mar 6). The ministry added that a search was underway by the local authorities. The incident is under investigation by the local authorities, the statement added.“One Indonesian survivor is currently receiving burn treatment at a hospital in the city of Khasab, Oman. The other three Indonesians are still being searched for by the local authorities,” the ministry said Saturday.Amid the escalating tension in West Asia, several vessels have been targeted while passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has shut down the Strait of Hormuz and warned that any vessel attempting to pass could be targeted and set on fire, with several oil tankers being hit in recent days. However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Thursday (Mar 5) said that the passage is closed to vessels from the United States, Israel, Europe and their Western allies. "The war started with a kinetic phase by the U.S. and Israeli militaries, but as the war continues there will be other efforts by the Mossad and the CIA," an Israeli official said.
