NOCs to be provided to all South African IPL-bound players: CSA

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for IPL franchises from the BCCI is set to be the focal point of discussion when IPL Governing Council meets in few days’ time. Since the official postponement of the T20 World Cup 2020, the Indian cricket board is planning meticulously to conduct IPL 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and are seeking an approval from the central government for their request for a shift due to rising cases of COVID-19 in Inda.

"There will be three principal points on the agenda and that will primarily be discussed as and when the GC meets," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The primary points are as follows:

1) Shifting to UAE, dates, venues, matches:

After getting green signal from government departments, the BCCI will inform the ECB (Emirates Cricket Board) for hosting the IPL 2020.

"As far as I know, they are not curtailing the tournament. We will have all the 60 matches in the old format where teams play 14 games," a senior official of one of the popular franchise said.

The duration of IPL 2020 is set to be between 44 to 48 days depending on the double headers that BCCI approves. As per the original schedule, there were just five double headers on Sundays but given the current circumstances, the number of double headers could increase.

2) SOP for teams, bio-bubble, training facilities:

There are three grounds available in the UAE -- Dubai International Stadium, Sheikh Zayed Stadium (Abu Dhabi) and the Sharjah ground. Furthermore, the BCCI is set to rent the grounds of the ICC Academy for training purposes.

The ICC Academy has two full-sized cricket grounds along with 38 turf pitches, 6 indoor pitches, a 5700 square foot outdoor conditioning area along with physiotherapy and medicine centre.

"The teams that will be stationed in Dubai can practice at the ICC Academy by paying a fee," the senior official said.

As per the health protocol in Dubai, people carrying negative COVID-19 test report don’t have to go for quarantine. Also there is DXB app (similar to Aarogya Setu) in India which players and officials need to download.

"The hotels where we book rooms, the floors that will have our team members will be a sanitized areas and that will be done in consultation with hotel authorities," a franchise official informed.

If commercial flights are given an approval then most franchises will be heading to the UAE in the fourth week of August.

3) Issues with broadcaster

There will be talks on the duration of the tournament which is massive for host broadcasters considering they paid a whopping sum for the deal. Discussions are expected to be on the timing of evening/night matches whether they should be held at usual 8pm IST slot or be pushed forward by half an hour.

In case the tournament starts between September 26 and 29 and goes on till November 14 (Diwali), double-headers might not exceed more than seven which will be good news for broadcasters.

ALSO READ: Aakash Chopra explains why Royal Challengers Bangalore might find success if IPL happens in UAE 2) SOP for teams, bio-bubble, training facilities: There are three grounds available in the UAE -- Dubai International Stadium, Sheikh Zayed Stadium (Abu Dhabi) and the Sharjah ground. 3) Issues with broadcaster There will be talks on the duration of the tournament which is massive for host broadcasters considering they paid a whopping sum for the deal. As per IPL chairman Brijesh Patel, the Indian board is all set to take IPL 2020 to the UAE with more details expected once the IPL Governning Council meeting is over.

A lot of questions popped up as soon as UAE was partially confirmed by Brijesh Patel as the host of IPL 2020. The pitch conditions, temperature, outfield and other aspects of the game comes into play when there’s a change of country. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra if of the view that players may have to suffer with dehydration and heat.

“There will be no problem although they might have to fight a little bit with the heat. For now, the weather is good. Let’s be fair, UAE experiences a lot of heat. But September and October are still the pleasant months,” Chopra said in a video on his Youtube channel ‘Aakash Vani’.

“The problem I am seeing is that if the IPL starts on 26 September and ends on 7 November, it is about 6 weeks including the final week of playoffs, there might be lot of double-headers with the league phase to be completed in 5 weeks,” he added.

“In double-headers, however pleasant it might be, it is after all the heat of the middle east. So, batsmen might get dehydrated,” the cricketer-turned commentator added.

Chopra further said that RCB might do well in the UAE. The former Indian batsman said that teams like Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab will also have an upper hand in terms on getting the most of out the conditions in the UAE.

World cricket witnessed something unique in Cricket South Africa’s brainchild - 3TC Solidarity Cup - at SuperSport Park in Centurion on July 18. Another major development in the world of cricket comes in the postponement of T20 World Cup. IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel has almost confirmed that IPL 2020 will be heading to the UAE. As more and more news surrounding IPL 2020 continues to flow, a big question remains whether the tournament will also follow the footsteps of the 3TC in relation to virtual commentary.

The event in South Africa was one-off but IPL will be of around 60 matches. Is it even possible to pull off something of a mountainous scale as IPL when it comes to commentating from home? Deep Dasgupta is of the view that it will definitely be challenging but not impossible but questions if 160 players can travel to the UAE then how will the other 15-20 commentators make a difference.

“Virtual commentary during IPL might not be the first option but I guess it is an option somewhere in the pecking order. Technologically, it will be massive. Yes, there has to be some improvement if IPL thinks about virtual commentary. With practice, things will get better. If IPL happens in the UAE, then around 160 players will be travelling. So how can another 15-20 commentators affect the planning?,” Dasgupta explained.

Production scale is immense in the IPL. It can’t be even compared to other T20 tournaments in the world in terms of quality analysis, entertainment and depth. In a nutshell, IPL is blockbuster. But if the organisers go with the decision of sticking to virtual commentary, will it make a difference? In terms of quality, yes there will be a definite hit. While it is still an early stage, the BCCI might not take the risk of going ahead with virtual commentary as they would look to make the viewing experience as better as possible for fans watching on their TV sets or over the internet.

“You can never compare on-field commentary with off-field commentary. When you are on the field, you can contribute so much more. When we are off the field, we are seeing what others are seeing on television, so we can’t add more to that. Whereas when you are on the field, you pick up something what you see and start talking about it and then the cameraman can pick it up. And there is constant communication with the producers, directors and everyone associated with the broadcast. But then if are doing virtual commentary more then it will improve with time be it on technical aspect or sharing insights as a commentator,” the former India wicket-keeper explained.

While the news of IPL heading to the UAE has certainly taken the social media by storm, fans are still awaiting an official confirmation. IPL is all about experiencing world’s best T20 tournament, and commentators and presenters play a major role in fulfilling the expectations of viewers. Fans would be eager to watch their favourite franchises in action but they would also be looking forward to seeing their favourite commentators on the field lighting up the magic with their presence and voice.

All set https://t.co/eMylbFoxlN pic.twitter.com/LCMDhLTnt7 — Deep Dasgupta (@DeepDasgupta7) July 18, 2020 × Another major development in the world of cricket comes in the postponement of T20 World Cup. Hats off to @StarSportsIndia to pull this one off! Hindi commentary on coverage coming from SA, with comms in Mumbai, Kolkata, Baroda & Delhi. Director in Mysore, producers again all over the place. Gold goes to the production team! Well done you guys!👏👏👏#3teamcricket — Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) July 18, 2020 × “Virtual commentary during IPL might not be the first option but I guess it is an option somewhere in the pecking order. ALSO READ: Planning for full-fledged IPL 2020, most likely in the UAE: Brijesh Patel “You can never compare on-field commentary with off-field commentary.

"The IPL GC will meet within a week or 10 days and all decisions (including final schedule) will be taken there. As of now, the plan is to have a full-fledged IPL comprising 60 games and most likely in the UAE," Patel told PTI.
Patel further said that the operational side of the tournament is going to be a challenge.

"Just the operational side of it. Whether you do it here or outside, it doesn't matter (with no crowds)."

While the franchises had already been working on their plans for the IPL even before the ICC announcement, the majority of players don’t have access to grounds amid the pandemic and will need at least three to four weeks to reach optimum match fitness.

1) More double headers expected (original schedule had only five double headers).

2) BCCI will need to provide a Standard Operating Procedure to IPL teams even though they will have their own SOPs in place.

3) Will the BCCI compensate teams for not being able to generate gate money this year?

4) Will there be virtual commentary from Star Sports? It was seen in the recent 3TC event in South Africa with the likes of Aakash Chopra, Deep Dasgupta and Irfan Pathan commentating from home.

Planning for full-fledged IPL 2020, most likely in the UAE: Brijesh Patel

As speculations continue to grow that the currently suspended Indian Premier league (IPL) 2020 could be held in the UAE due to rising caseload of COVID-19 in India, Dubai Sports City’s Head of Cricket and Events Salman Hanif has said that they are keeping the stadiums and facilities ready in case the BCCI takes the call to move the cash-rich tournament abroad.

The IPL is looking at the September-early November window and with the T20 World Cup 2020 likely to be postponed, the BCCI might look to shift the 13th edition of IPL to the UAE.

Speaking to ‘Gulf News’ Hanif said that the Dubai Sports City, which included the Dubai International Stadium and the ICC Academy, is ready a potential venue for the glitzy T20 league.

“The stadium has nine wickets on the top in case a large number of matches have to be accommodated within a smaller time-frame. We will not be scheduling any matches there to keep the wickets fresh,” said Hanif.

While case count in India has crossed the 10 lakh-mark, including over 25,000 deaths, the UAE has recorded more than 50,000 cases with over 300 deaths.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has already said that the board is keen to conduct the IPL even if has to be moved abroad. And if the IPL manages to book the September-November window for itself, the eight franchises would want their players to land in the UAE a bit early in a bid to earn time for practice.

“The practice facilities are never going to be a problem as we have hosted multi-team events before. In the ICC complex alone, there are 38 wickets – spread over the two Oval grounds, the simulated turf wickets as well as the state-of-the-art indoor facilities in case they want to beat the heat,” Hanif said.

IPL 2020: UAE keeping itself ready in case the call comes from BCCI

While international cricket has resumed with the three-match Test series between England and West Indies, there is still unclarity surrounding the much-talked-about Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. While the Asia Cup 2020 has been officially postponed, the T20 World Cup is on the verge of postponement amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the question remains what happens to the IPL.

One of the IPL franchise CEO mulled over the lack of clarity as he said that it has started to hurt the interest of franchises, players and the sponsors.

While the ICC is yet to officially announce the fate of T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be hosted by Australia from October 18 to November 15, latest reports suggest that the showpiece tournament will be deferred when ICC officials meet on Friday (July 10).

This will lead to young players forcing on private leagues other than international matches.

Questions will be raised if IPL 2020 happens but T20 World Cup is postponed: Inzamam-ul-Haq

The T20 World Cup 2020 to be hosted by Australia in October-November is set to be postponed when the ICC officials meet this Friday. For the last couple of months, the ICC has been delaying a final call on the T20 World Cup as it wants to make a correct call. However, a decision on the showpiece event looks inevitable now.

The postponement of T20 World Cup may open up a window for the BCCI to conduct the much-talked-about Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 which has also been postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19 pandemic.

There has been a lot of talks about the postponement of the T20 World Cup 2020, which could be pushed back to 2022 as India is scheduled to host the 2021 edition of the tournament with the 50-over World Cup in 2023 also scheduled to be played in the country.

The report also states that the Cricket Australia has asked its players to prepare for a limited-overs away series against England in mid-September. The BCCI is also chalking out a tentative window for the IPL 2020, irrespective of ICC’s call on the T20 World Cup.

"The year started on a horrible note and there's been no relief on any front. But as time goes by, we need to take things head-on and ensure that we remain prepared for any eventuality. Cricket is no different. It is time for the BCCI to start planning for the year ahead," Dhumal told TOI.

The IPL 2020 was originally scheduled to commence in March but was suspended indefinitely following the COVID-19 outbreak. The ICC is yet to officially decide on the T20 World Cup and with officials publicly claiming that it would be unrealistic for Australia to host the showpiece event, at this point of time, the final verdict is awaited from the ICC.

T20 World Cup set to be postponed this week, BCCI to start planning for IPL 2020

Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia on Tuesday called for an end to Chinese sponsorships and financial contracts in the Indian Premier League amid the tensions between two countries following the violent clash in eastern Ladakh earlier in June.

Calls for boycotting Chinese products have echoed all around the country after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the Galwan Valley clash on June 15. Amid the escalating tensions, the BCCI called a meeting of the IPL Governing Council to review Chinese sponsorship in the cash-rich tournament. And on Monday, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps including trending TikTok, ShareIt, WeChat and many others.

"We should do it (sever ties with Chinese sponsors in IPL) for the sake of the nation. Country comes first, money is secondary. And it is the Indian Premier League, not the Chinese Premier League. It should lead by example and show the way," Wadia told PTI on Tuesday.

"It will be tough to replace them initially but if it has to be done for the sake of the nation, we should do it," a CSK source told PTI.
Another team owner said: "Let the government decide first, whatever they decide, we will follow".

Wadia is also of the view that BCCI needs to find an Indian sponsor for the upcoming season while adding it is not right to wait government’s directives.

Indian companies need to step up: Ness Wadia

"If I was the BCCI president, I would say find me an Indian sponsor for the upcoming season.

"Indian companies need to step up and see the same benefits and opportunities that Chinese companies have seen in the IPL, which is the best T20 league in the world."

Asked about the Chinese sponsorship in IPL teams, Wadia said: "The teams too should be given time to replace their Chinese sponsors. As I said, there are enough Indian companies which can replace them."

Wadia also welcomed the Indian government's decision to ban Chinese apps citing national security.

"If India plays its card right, it can really be the superpower it desires to be," he observed.

"Personally I don't like to buy Chinese products because they are sub-standard. The focus has to be on making Indian and buying Indian. China produces such large volumes and suffocates the world, it has to stop. We should put all our efforts on making India a manufacturing hub.

"I travel around the country a lot. If we don't stop the influx of cheap Chinese goods and are not firm in what we are doing, Indian manufacturing will die," cautioned Wadia.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal on Wednesday said that with Australia expressing its inability to host the T20 World Cup, there is nothing much left for the ICC to think about the showpiece tournament.

Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings, who is also a member of ICC Board, on Tuesday said that Australia’s chances of hosting the T20 World Cup in October-November is ‘unrealistic’ and that has left the BCCI scratching its head on why the ICC is delaying the announcement of a postponement.

BCCI's Arun Dhumal: Don't know why ICC is delaying call on T20 World Cup despite Australia expressing inability

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is of the view that Indian Premier League (IPL) could be played in Sri Lanka in September even if T20 World Cup goes ahead as per schedule in October-November. The batting great has said that instead of playing double-headers, the tournament could be played with one-legged matches.

The T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in Australia from October 18 to November 19 but there were reports stating that the showpiece event could be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Australian government has allowed crowds up to 10,000 in stadiums from June and it has given a new lifeline to Australia in terms of hosting the event as planned. The ICC will make a decision on the tournament next month.

"If the ICC believes that the World T20 can happen, then having the IPL looks difficult because it could only be held if the World T20 is postponed," the former India captain told a leading Indian news portal.

The BCCI is optimistic of holding the IPL this year even if it means taking it overseas or playing behind closed doors with IPL chairman Brijesh Patel saying that the tournament could be moved out of India if the rising number of cases doesn’t ease in the next couple of months.

However, with the monsoon expected to play spoilsport for cricket, staging a truncated version of IPL in Sri Lanka could be a viable option, as per Gavaskar.

September IPL 2020 in Sri Lanka is viable option, opines Sunil Gavaskar

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has locked September-October window for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, subject to postponement of Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, chairman of the tournament Brijesh Patel said on Thursday.

Patel even hinted that the cash-rich tournament could be held overseas as games behind closed doors make location irrelevant.

"We are looking at the September-October window but that is subject to the postponement of the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. We will also have to follow the government guidelines at that time," Patel told PTI.

While the Asia Cup is slated to be played in September followed by T20 World Cup in October-November, future of both the tournaments has not been decided by the ICC with the global body expected to take a call on the showpiece event in Australia next month.

The UAE and Sri Lanka have shown interest in hosting IPL 2020 and given the rising cases in India, the option to conduct the league overseas could be opted.

"First preference is India of course but a lot will depend on the situation at that time. Sri Lanka has offered to host it and so has UAE, we will see where we can play. If you are playing without crowds, it doesn't matter where you play," said Patel.

The 2009 edition of IPL was hosted by South Africa due to general elections in India with the 2014 edition being partially held in the UAE in 2014. The BCCI will take a financial hit to the tune of Rs 4000 crore if the IPL is cancelled. Patel added a truncated version of IPL could also be looked into.

"We want normal duration for the tournament but again it depends on which tournament (Asia Cup or World Cup) is postponed.

"IPL is an important tournament for the board, sponsors, broadcasters and the players. Everyone wants it to happen. I am sure the players are itching to take the field."

"I think the ICC will take a call soon. If the World Cup is happening, then teams need to start preparing too. Also, World Cup without crowd is no World Cup but you can play an IPL behind closed doors," added Patel.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka cricket has confirmed that India’s tour of Sri Lanka scheduled to be played in June, won’t go as planned due to COVID-19 pandemic.

ALSO READ: India's tour of Sri Lanka called off due to COVID-19 pandemic While the Asia Cup is slated to be played in September followed by T20 World Cup in October-November, future of both the tournaments has not been decided by the ICC with the global body expected to take a call on the showpiece event in Australia next month. "IPL is an important tournament for the board, sponsors, broadcasters and the players. Everyone wants it to happen. I am sure the players are itching to take the field." "I think the ICC will take a call soon.

Brijesh Patel: In empty stadiums, it hardly matters if IPL is held in India or overseas

Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore on Wednesday said that getting players ready after a long lockdown will be one of the biggest challenges his support staff will face.

The Indian Premier league, which was scheduled to start on March 29, stands indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The BCCI is looking at the September-October window for hosting the cash-rich tournament.

"These are unusual times. One of the challenges which was identified by support staff during these unusual times is how to get players ready as they have gone completely cold," Mysore said in a webinar organised by FICCI.

Countries all across the world started going into lockdown mid-March to stem the growth of the cornavirus outbreak.

All sporting action including international and domestic cricket was either called-off or postponed, leaving the players to rely on home workouts to keep themselves fit.

"The support staff and back staff are all ready. A lot of discussions have happened from a support staff point, from a team stand point, on what we have to do," Mysore said.

"So a lot of one on one conversations are happening to get the players ready despite some of the limitations like not even having access to a gym. There is a lot of enthusiasm. We'll all be tested but I think is cautiously optimistic."

Even when sport resumes, matches will be held inside empty stadiums with no fans. Asked about players playing behind closed doors, Mysore said the stakeholders have an interesting opportunity in hand.

"This is a huge opportunity. The barriers that a stadium used to offer in terms of capacity to now when we can open it up to the universe.

"Now fans can have virtual presence, now we have to think in a different paradigm. Crowd noise can be real with the virtual presence of fans there. We have an interesting opportunity in hand," he added.

BCCI keen on staging IPL 2020 in India, schedule yet to be discussed officially: Sourav Ganguly

Just a day before the all-important International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting, reports have surfaced that the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October-November, is all set to be postponed till 2022, opening a window for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 later in the year.

The move to push back the much-talked-about T20 World Cup to 2022 is because there is another T20 World Cup scheduled for 2021 to be hosted by India and there is a consensus that playing two T20 World Cups in a year seems improper.

As per reports, host broadcasters Star Sports were worried about hosting an IPL in six months followed by two T20 World Cups in the year 2021.

Notably, there is no major ICC event scheduled for the year 2022 so moving the T20 World Cup by two years is a feasible option for everyone given the situation surrounding COVID-19 and broadcasting market.

T20 World Cup set to be postponed to 2022, IPL likely in October-November: Reports

Australia's premier pacer Pat Cummins on Wednesday said that the Indian Premier League would be a "great fit" for the October window if the T20 World Cup is postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is speculation that the 13th IPL, which was suspended indefinitely due to the global health crisis, might be conducted in October-November if the T20 World Cup in Australia is postponed.

"If that opens up a window I think the IPL would be a great fit," Cummins, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping Rs 15.5 crores, told reporters here.

"You have millions and millions of people watching that tournament around the world... Potentially even more after a long break off cricket. There's a lot of reasons why I would want it to go ahead but the main one is it's a great tournament."

A decision on the T20 World Cup will be taken when the International Cricket Council's all-powerful board holds a tele-conference on Thursday.

Former Australian skippers Allan Border and Ian Chappell were not too happy with the prospect of IPL happening in place of the T20 World Cup.

Border said IPL is just a money grab and shouldn't take precedence over the T20 World cup, while Chappell believes that the well-paid Australian players have an obligation to give priority to the domestic competitions and should snub the IPL.

Confined to the four walls for over two months, Cummins said he is eagarly looking forward to return to play.
"I'm just about ready to get back into it and ready for that next tour," he said.

The CEO of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rahul Johri has said that the board is planning to conduct the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 with Indian and overseas players after the monsoon. The plan depends majorly on the fate of ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Australia from October 18 to November 15. A decision on the showpiece event is likely to be made when ICC’s board members meet on May 28.

Johri said that the flavour of IPL is best when the world comes and play in India while adding it will be a step-by-step process and things can’t get back to normalcy in a single day. Johri stated players’ decision to participate in IPL 2020 or not would be respected by everyone.

“IPL is one of the greatest engagers. More people watched the IPL last year than those who voted for general elections. For sponsors, cricket is a leader and it will lead the way. The recovery will be sharper than a V-shaped recovery,” said Johri at a webinar.

“The flavour of IPL is that best players in the world come and play, and everyone is committed to maintaining that flow. But it will be a step-by-step process. We can’t expect normalisation tomorrow,” he said.

Johri further said that cricketing activities in India can only be held after monsoons while adding they will be guided by the government guidelines as to when and how cricket can resume in the country. However, he accepted that scheduling IPL 2020 in October-November won’t be an easy task as a lot of factors like 14-day quarantine period, training regimes, the calendar will have to be kept in mind.

“We will be guided by government guidelines. Our advisory says: IPL is suspended till further notice. We are engaging with various agencies. After the current phase of lockdown ends, there is the monsoon. Cricketing activities can start only after the monsoon. By then, hopefully, things will improve.”

“When flights resume, everyone has to quarantine themselves before playing. We will have to look at how that will impact the schedules, which as it is are tight. Imagine you have to factor in 14-day quarantine prior to practice also. So, there are a lot of moving parts. But we are still optimistic. Hopefully, the situation will improve after monsoon, and we will approach it then,” he said.

When asked about conducting the IPL behind closed doors, Johri said: “It will not just be in IPL but also international cricket. Although it (gate receipts) gives us a small percentage of our revenue, it is important because the bulk of that goes in the maintenance of stadiums. However, in the short term, before we get back to normal, we can live without (spectators) it.”

IPL 2020 possible after monsoons, can live without spectators before normalcy: BCCI CEO Rahul Johri

BCCI apex council member Anushman Gaekwad on Wednesday said that the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, scheduled to be hosted by Australia, is unlikely to go ahead, opening a window for the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) depending on the situation surrounding COVID-19 in India.

Have doubts about T20 World Cup, October-November window could belong to IPL: BCCI apex council member Anshuman Gaekwad

Indian sports was handed a major boost on Sunday after the Indian government allowed stadiums and sporting complexes to open in its directives for lockdown 4.0. With the latest directives, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been alerted in its future planning for the resumption of cricket in India.

“Sports complexes and stadia will be permitted to open; however, spectators will not be allowed,” the union home ministry said in its statement on the fresh rules.

While the ban on domestic and international flight is still active, a possibility of a window opening up for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 depends on the future of T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October-November.

However, the BCCI is not looking too far and is focused on resuming training. “We can’t be looking at staging any competition, let alone IPL when inter-state travel is not permitted. Also, international travel is restricted. But with stadiums being opened, we will now work out modalities with our state units as to which places players can train and when,” BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal said as quoted by a leading daily.

The BCCI is looking to coordinate with state associations who will communicate with state governments in a bid to allow players, who are in red zones, to train.

Chennai Super Kings CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, said that players and franchises have to deal with playing matches behind closed doors while stating that the government’s latest directive is a big positive for Indian sports.

“If that is the final thing, that’s what we will have to do. At this point, we can’t expect crowds to come in at all. Let us see how it works out,” he said as quoted by the same news portal. “It’s a big positive (government order), (but) we will have to wait and see when people are allowed to come out. If you are not allowed to travel how will you play? That’s the most important thing. We still have restrictions in containment zones.

“They have opened the stadiums, now people (players, support staff, officials) have to come out. Players have to come and practice… we will have to see how it works out. Too early, let’s wait for a week or 10 days, we will know. First they will have to maintain the grounds; we don’t know in what shape the wickets and stadiums are. Within a week we will know what will happen,” Viswanathan added.

However, conducting IPL 2020 is still a stretched idea as a lot depends on how the situation surrounding COVID-19 pandemic will work out in the next month or so. An alternate window for IPL 2020 also depends on the fate of T20 World Cup, which could be postponed given the international travel restrictions in the majority of countries.

IPL hopes rise as Indian government allows re-opening of stadiums

Cancelling the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic would cost the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) more than half a billion dollars, however, cutting players’ wage has not been considered yet by the authorities.

The IPL is staring at a first wipeout in its 12-year history following repeated postponement of the tournament from the original starting date of March 29. Scrapping the cash-rich tournament would result in a massive financial hit for the Indian cricket board.

"The BCCI is looking at a big revenue loss. In case the IPL does not take place, the loss would be close to 40 billion rupees ($530 million), or even more," said Board of Control for Cricket in India treasurer Arun Dhumal as quoted by AFP.

Dhumal admitted that the authorities are not sure whether it will be possible to conduct IPL 2020.

"We are not sure whether we will be able to have it this year," he admitted.

While the three-match ODI series against South Africa in March was cancelled after the first washed-out game in Dharamsala, it is the IPL, that generates the maximum of BCCI’s revenue and reportedly, is worth more than $11 billion a year to the Indian economy.

"We will only be able to figure out the exact revenue loss once we are sure of how many games we have lost," said Dhumal.

As per Duff and Phelps financial consultancy, the brand value of IPL was estimated at $6.7 billion in 2019.

While Star Sports paid more than $220 million for five years of TV rights up to 2022, the broadcaster was targeting $400 million of revenue in 2020 alone, as per reports.

Dhumal further said pay cut is the last thing the BCCI would do from their end and hence, the board is calculating how much loss they will suffer if IPL 2020 is cancelled.

"That would be the last thing that we would want to do at our end," said Dhumal.

"That is why we are working (on) how much is the loss finally we have to pay.

"So once we are able to assess that then we might consider it, but it will be the last thing on our agenda."

Cricket fans are eagerly waiting on an update from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the postponed Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. While speculations are rife that the Indian cricket board is looking for an alternate window to conduct the cash-rich tournament, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has claimed the reports to be “media speculation” while adding that the board is not thinking about IPL and once things surrounding COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown measures get clear they will get back to the drawing board and think of resuming cricket.

Dhumal said that the board still doesn’t know whether overseas players would be willing to come to India for the IPL or whether they would be required to go under quarantine for two weeks before playing the tournament.

“We haven’t planned anything as of now. We can’t think of IPL getting back yet. Players coming in from other countries, whether they’ll be willing to come here and be quarantined for two weeks and play IPL is not known. How can we think of IPL? This is all media speculation. There is nothing as of now. Once things get clear, then only will we be able to go back to the drawing board and think about re-starting cricket,” Dhumal told an Australian daily.

'We can’t think of IPL getting back yet': BCCI official on resumption of cricket

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami on Thursday said that he doesn’t see the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 happening this year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the yearly T20 tournament has been postponed indefinitely and there are question marks over the possibility of holding it in an alternate window. Shami was supposed to play for Kings XI Punjab after being retained by the franchise before the auction that took place in Kolkata in December 2019.

Shami, during an Instagram Live session, said that he doesn’t think there’s enough time for IPL this year while adding that the T20 World Cup may also get postponed. Shami said that with many bilateral series and events getting cancelled, cricket calendar needs to be shuffled.

“I was speaking to Irfan bhai as well on the possibilities of Indian Premier League. I don’t think there is time for IPL this year. Our T20I World Cup may also get pushed. Everything has come to a stop. We have to reschedule everything. We have to see where to place everything, accordingly. Hence, I don’t feel the IPL will be possible,” he said.

However, Shami is of the view that if lockdown ends early then IPL 2020 can be held later in the year. The Indian pacer added that IPL could provide a platform for players to get into the rhythm and regain their form before the T20 World Cup.

“We have to wait and see how long our lockdown lasts. If our lockdown gets over early, then we may see IPL happen this year - even though later in the year. It will be great if IPL happens before the T20 World Cup, as the players can get used to the format, and also get back to their rhythm.”

Like to Ajinkya Rahane, Shami also feels players would need at least a month to get back into shape and match-day rhythm.

“The sports person’s body needs to get used to the scenario. Every player needs time to get the groove and rhythm back. Players need at least a month to get back into shape. 95 per cent of my sports stars are stuck inside their house. They cannot do many activities. So, they need time to get back on the field,” he said.

With sporting calendar disrupted due to COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a lot of talks surrounding the future of Asia Cup 2020, IPL 2020 and ICC T20 World Cup. Speculations are rife that the BCCI is looking for September window to accommodate the already-postponed IPL 2020 in place of Asia Cup.

However, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO Wasim Khan has said that if Asia Cup is to be postponed then it will be only due to health safety and the Pakistan board will not agree to any rescheduling to free-up space for IPL.
