During the meeting, the Indian minister reportedly told his Chinese counterpart that the two nations need to move from disengagement to de-escalation along their de facto border in the Himalayas, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Indian defence ministry noted that this was the first meeting of the two ministers following the recent disengagement agreements and the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and&nbsp;Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.

'Move from disengagement to de-escalation...,' Indian defence minister tells Chinese counterpart

India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, while speaking to soldiers in the Indian Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir after the row over the death of three civilians, said that he had full faith that the Army would wipe out terrorism from the region. Appreciating the Army for their bravery, Singh said, "I believe in your bravery and steadfastness... Terrorism should be finished from Jammu and Kashmir and you need to move forward with this commitment. I have full faith that you will achieve victory."

However, he asked the Army that they should not "make any mistake" which can hurt any Indian. Singh was in the border district of Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir, to review the security situation days after four soldiers were killed in an ambush on two Army vehicles. This happened in the aftermath of the terror attack in which the Army had detained several civilians in Poonch&nbsp;for questioning, among which three were found dead.&nbsp;

A Brigade Commander was asked to join the investigation of the Army into the deaths. The Army has said that it has zero tolerance for violence committed against innocent civilians.

"You are the country's protectors. But I want to request you that besides ensuring the country's security, you also have the responsibility to win the hearts of the people. There should be no mistake that hurts an Indian," Singh said.

The defence minister added that the forces need to share a close bond with the people. "We have to win battles, eliminate terrorists, but a bigger objective is to win the hearts of the people. We will win wars, but we need to win hearts too. And I know you try your best to do this," he added.

Assuring the troops, he said that every soldier is considered as a family member by every Indian.

"Every Indian feels this way. It is not tolerable to us if anyone casts an evil eye on you. Security and intelligence agencies play a crucial role in stopping such attacks. Whatever support is needed to step up surveillance will be provided by the government. The doors to our treasury are fully open," he stated.

India vowed on Tuesday (Dec 26) to find out who was behind the drone attack on merchant navy ships of its coast even if it makes it search "depths of seas". “The Indian government has taken the drone attack on MV Chem Pluto and attack on MV Saibaba in the Red Sea seriously. We will find those who executed the recent attacks on merchant navy ships even from the depths of the seas and take strict action against them,” Singh said.

The defence minister said that India had stepped up patrolling of the seas following the attack. The Indian Navy is a regional power in the Indian Ocean region and has been involved in various operations providing security to trade convoys passing through the waterways in this part of the world.

On Saturday, cargo ship MV Chem Pluto was struck by a drone when it was about 217 nautical miles from the Indian port of Porbandar. The ship has 21 Indian crew members on board. Following the attack, the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Gurad have deployed number of assets to help the ship as well as to strengthen security of Indian waters.

MV Saibaba, a separate Gabon-flagged commercial oil tanker came under drone attack in southern Red Sea. It had 25 Indian crew members.

India and the Maldives signed a pact for the development of a coast guard harbour for maritime security in 2021. The harbour will be developed at the Uthuru Thila Falhu naval base, and the Indian side has already submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the development of the harbour. India has also been providing support in the maintenance and repair of the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard Fleet.

In addition, the Indian Navy has been providing aid to the Maldives during the COVID-19 pandemic. The navy has transported food items and medicine to the country to help with relief efforts. Last year, India also handed over a refitted CGS Huravee ship to the Maldives and inaugurated the Phase-I extension of the Composite Training Centre (CTC) of the Maldives National Defence Force. The CGS Huravee was gifted by India to the MNDF in 2006, while the Phase-I extension of CTC was completed through an Indian grant.

India and Russia have agreed to boost their defence ties, said a statement by the Indian government after the defence ministers from both countries held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, on Friday (April 28).&nbsp;

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu also discussed, “wide-ranging issues of bilateral defence cooperation, including military-to-military ties as well as industrial partnership,” said the Indian government, in a statement, following the meeting.&nbsp;

Notably, India is one of the biggest importers of defence equipment from Russia and has reportedly bought nearly half its military supplies fighter jets, tanks, nuclear submarines and an aircraft carrier over the decades.&nbsp;

India has also garnered criticism from several Western countries for buying Russian oil at a lower price as the United States and its allies attempt to isolate Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine.

"I am extending heartfelt greetings to all the brave soldiers of Indian armed forces on the occasion of Swarnim Vijay Parv. We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the victory in the 1971 war as the Vijay Parv," Gen Rawat said in the pre-recorded message.&nbsp;

"We invite all countrymen to participate in the Vijay Parv," he added.&nbsp;

CDS Gen Rawat and his wife were cremated together on the same pyre with full military honours, with a 17-gun salute fired in New Delhi on December 10.&nbsp;
