Virat Kohli unleashed his best in the ODI series opener against the West Indies on Sunday (Sep 27), smashing an unbeaten 139 – his 55th One-Day century, and helping land the first punch in this three-match series. The talismanic batter also completed 15,000 runs in the 50-over format, becoming only the second batter after his idol and Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, and the quickest ever to do so (innings-wise). He broke several records in his match-winning outing in Thiruvananthapuram and won a million hearts, including that of the newly appointed England white-ball mentor, Kevin Pietersen. Having played against and alongside (in the IPL) each other back in the day, KP knows Kohli’s mettle and couldn’t help but shower praise on Kohli’s record knock. Also read| IND vs WI 1st ODI: Kohli breaks Sachin's most runs in one country record with unbeaten 139 as India thump West Indies by 8 wickets “55 ODI 100s for Virat!!!! 55?!?!?!?! Many cricketers have good careers by just playing 55 games. He Is A Genius, and I’m buzzing for him! ❤️” KP wrote on his X handle.

Kohli was on song in his first ODI game since losing the Lord’s One-Day in July this year. Coming into bat following Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, Kohli stitched a 151-run stand with captain Shubman Gill to keep India’s nose ahead in the run chase. While Gill also continued his rich vein of form with his 10th One-Day hundred, Kohli’s 55th ODI century stole all the limelight. Unlike how he used to shape his innings during run chases previously, Kohli hit fifth gear from the word go, smashing nine sixes and 10 fours in his breathtaking knock. He remained unbeaten on 139 off just 88 balls at a strike rate of 157.95. "I promised myself I'm going to play positively because I can," Kohli said in the post-match presser. "So I'm going to continue to play like that, but, you know, not be reckless. There is a fine line, which as a professional, as an experienced player, I should have the ability to execute in this way without, you know, playing reckless shots and get the team through." "I think to follow a free mind, you need a fit body. So for me, it works the other way around. I stay physically fit, and then I'm able to visualise the game in the way that I want to play, which allows me the best chance to go out there and execute in the way that I did tonight,” said Player of the Match Kohli. India and the West Indies will meet in the second ODI on Wednesday (Sep 30) in Guwahati.

‘Dream is to play match-winning knock in final’: Kohli outlines ultimate goal for 2027 World Cup

A day after the veteran batting pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli confirmed their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also brought Ravindra Jadeja’s name into the conversation, saying that the ace all-rounder remains ‘in the mix’ for the showpiece event in Africa 2027. After winning the two Tests 1-0, India will now face West Indies in the three-match ODI series opener on Thursday (July 27) in Barbados. Ahead of the series opener, captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media and opened up on the likely comeback of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah's last international match was in September 2022 and since then, he has been out of cricketing action due to injury concerns. He is at the National Cricket Acamdey (NCA) and is gearing up for a quick comeback, with the ODI World Cup to kick off on October 05 in India.

While Rohit mentioned that he is not aware of Bumrah's return, as per reports, he might feature in the Ireland T20Is next month. Rohit hopes he is able to play a few games before the ODI World Cup. Speaking to the reporters, he said, "The amount of experience he (Bumrah) brings is very important. Right now he’s coming from a serious injury and I’ve no idea if he’ll travel to Ireland because the team hasn’t been announced yet."

Hitman further added, "If he gets to play then it’s good and we hope he plays before the World Cup. When a player returns from a serious injury, match fitness, match feeling are some key components, which are missing. We’ll see what has been planned and everything depends on his recovery. We are in constant touch with the NCA and things look positive at the moment."

Along with Bumrah, India also awaits the return of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant before the 50-over showpiece event in India. While Pant is unlikely to feature in the mega event, Iyer and Rahul are expected to come back sooner than later as the duo are part of India's middle order.

Ahead of the ODI WC, India are set to play over ten games, including the Asia Cup and home ODIs versus five-time champions Australia. For now, they will aim to whitewash the Windies in the Caribbean.

WI vs IND: With Ravindra Jadeja ruled out, India name new vice-captain for 1st ODI in Trinidad

India and West Indies will square off in the three-match ODI series on Friday evening (July 22). In Rohit Sharma's absence, Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the new-look side, which comprises several young faces such as Deepak Hooda, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc.

India and West Indies will kick off their white-ball series on Friday (July 22) in Port of Spain, Trinidad. In regular captain Rohit Sharma's absence, Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the new-look side which comprises several young faces such as Deepak Hooda, Sanju Samson, Avesh Khan, Shubman Gill, and Arshdeep Singh among others.

Not only Rohit, even the likes of Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for the tour (although Pant will join for the T20Is). Talking about KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja (who has been named as Dhawan's deputy for the ODIs), the former has tested Covid positive whereas the all-rounder is suffering from a knee injury and is, most likely, to sit out.

India reached Trinidad from Manchester, after the completion of their successful tour of England, amid heavy rain in the Caribbean island. Hence, the Rahul Dravid-Dhawan-led team management had to shift their training session indoors. Thus, rain can be a factor for the three-match ODI series opener on Friday evening.

WI vs IND, 1st ODI, weather forecast: Will rain make its presence felt in series opener in Trinidad?

Team India have reached Trinidad for the upcoming three-match ODI series versus Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies, which gets underway on July 22. India left for the West Indies tour soon after the conclusion of their all-format tour of England, which ended on July 17.

In regular captain Rohit Sharma's absence, out due to rest, Shikhar Dhawan is in-charge of the side and the left-hander will once again get a chance to lead the Men in Blue after the 2021 Sri Lanka tour. Interestingly, it is believed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have spent a whopping sum for the Indian team's flight to West Indies. As per a report in the Times of India, BCCI booked a chartered flight for the team's travel from England to the Caribbean island.

"The BCCI spent Rs 3.5 crore on the chartered flight which took Team India from Manchester on Tuesday afternoon to Port of Spain (the capital of Trinidad and Tobago) by 11.30 pm IST. The reason a chartered flight was booked for the team was not Covid-19. It's difficult to book so many tickets in a commercial flight-the Indian contingent includes 16 players and members of the support staff, including head coach Rahul Dravid. There are players' wives who have travelled to the Caribbean too," the source told TOI on Wednesday (July 20).

"Normally, in a commercial flight, this expense would've been around Rs 2 crore. A business class ticket from Manchester to Port of Spain would be around Rs 2 lakh. A chartered flight is more expensive, but it's a logical option to take. Most top football teams have a charter now," the source further added.

India's ODI team doesn't comprise the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Jasrpit Bumrah as all have been rested whereas KL Rahul is on the road to recovery from his injury, which kept him out of the England trip.

On Sunday (February 6), Team India head coach Rahul Dravid was seen bowling at the nets to mark the 23rd anniversary of Anil Kumble's 10-wicket haul, which he claimed in an India-Pakistan Test match at New Delhi, India in 1999. Back then, the former Indian spinner Kumble became only the second bowler overall, and first Indian, to achieve ten wickets in an innings in the purest format.

Courtesy Kumble's 10 for 74, India dismissed Wasim Akram-led Pakistan for 207, in pursuit of 420, to win by 212 runs at the then known as Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, Delhi. Thus, Dravid also rolled his arms at the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team's net session ahead of their three-match ODI series opener versus West Indies, on February 6 in Ahmedabad.

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has now poked fun at Dravid's bowling. Bhajji hilariously advised Dravid to widen his grip as otherwise the ball won't spin much. Here's what he wrote:

India vs WI: 'Grip is too wide jam' - Harbhajan Singh pokes fun at head coach Rahul Dravid's bowling

Following the 2019 ODI World Cup, rift rumours between then skipper Virat Kohli and his white-ball deputy Rohit Sharma intensified. Kohli, however, rubbished all such claims before India's tour of West Indies in August, 2019.

The rift rumours died down for a bit after a few months before it again hit the headlines in early December, 2021. After Rohit took over from Virat as the limited-overs captain, many speculated that all isn't well between the two superstar cricketers. Nonetheless, Kohli once again shunned all such claims in his explosive presser, on December 15, before Team India's trip to South Africa.

After the India-West Indies three-match ODI series opener, held in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 6), Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has slammed all such speculations seeing Rohit-Kohli's on-field chemistry versus Kieron Pollard & Co. Both the senior cricketers were seen discussing strategies and helping each other out in taking DRS calls.

Thus, Gavaskar told Star Sports after India's six-wicket win over the Windies, “Why wouldn't they be getting along? They are playing for India. All these talks that you generally hear about two players not gelling and etc. are all speculations. According to reliable sources or allegedly or reportedly. Nobody actually tells you and this has been happening for a years. And these guys don't even bother about it. You wouldn't even bother about these kind of speculations because you yourself know what the truth is. And so there is nothing."

“There are often speculations that the captain who is now a player in the team will not want the new captain to succeed. This is nonsense. Because if he doesn't score runs or a bowler doesn't pick wickets then he is going to be out of the team. He has already lost the captaincy or opted out of captaincy, now you don't contribute with the bat or ball then you are going to be out of the team. So all these talks are mere speculations from people who have nothing better to do and are trying and creating stories. So don't you worry. Today Kohli didn't get runs but he will get runs whether he is playing under Rohit Sharma or any other captain.”

Rohit-led India produced a clinical performance in the first ODI versus West Indies at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday to go 1-0 up in the series. Bowling first, India dismissed the visitors for 176 and chased down the score with six wickets and 22 overs to spare.

This has been happening for years: Sunil Gavaskar rubbishes rift rumours between Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli

Rohit Sharma-led Team India began their home season with a bang. Playing the Kieron Pollard-led West Indies in the three-match ODI series opener, Rohit & Co. thrashed the visitors by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad to go 1-0 up.

Bowling first, India dismissed WI for a paltry 176 in 43.5 overs, courtesy Yuzvendra Chahal's 4 for 49 and Washington Sundar's 3-fer. In reply, Rohit's 60 and vital unbeaten knocks from Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Deepak Hooda took India home in only 28 overs.

Thus, India kicked off a new era in white-ball formats under Rohit on an emphatic note. On the other hand, newly-appointed limited-overs skipper Rohit surpassed Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar in an elite list with a blistering 60 on debut as the full-time white-ball skipper.

At the post-match presentation after India's stunning six-wicket win, Rohit said, "I don't believe in perfect game. You cannot be perfect. We want to keep getting better. We want to keep getting better as a team. The end goal is we should be able to achieve what the team wants. If the team requires us to do something different, have to do it. Don't think we have to change a lot. All I ask from players is to keep challenging themselves. I've been off for a while, haven't played for two months but I was back home hitting the balls. Knew there was a long season ahead. Had a good net session here. I was confident going into this game. Can take a lot of positives from this game. The pitch had something in it. There was softness in the pitch early on. In this particular game the toss became important. But honestly want to take the toss away from the play, don't want to depend on it a lot. But if you do, you have to take advantage."

Ind vs WI: Rohit Sharma surpasses Sachin Tendulkar in elite list with blistering 60 in series opener

Skipper Rohit Sharma brought in a sense of calm with a sizzling 60 after India's new spin combination of Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar laid the platform for an easy six-wicket victory over West Indies in the first ODI which also happens to be the country's 1000th.

First, the hosts bundled out West Indies for a meagre 176 in 43.5 overs as spinners Chahal (4/49 in 9.5 overs) and Washington (3/30 in 9 overs) ran through their listless line-up and then the skipper smashed 60 off 51 balls with hosts chased down the target in just 28 overs.

It is the 10th time in last 16 games that West Indies have failed to bat full 50 overs despite presence of senior players like Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran to name a few.

After a brief middle-order wobble, Suryakumar Yadav (34 no) and debutant Deepak Hooda (26 no) added 62 runs without much pressure to take the team home.

Just like the skipper, India also missed batter Rohit in South Africa in equal measure and on his comeback, there were no signs of any hamstring niggle as he smashed 10 fours and a six, adding 84 with stand-in opener Ishan Kishan (28).

Virat Kohli (8) also started with two boundaries but was holed out in the deep while Rishabh Pant was unfortunately run-out at the non-striker's end. But Rohit was in his element, while young Kishan, played second fiddle to perfection.

The former toyed with the West Indies attack, as the hosts were on course for a comfortable chase with the team fifty coming up in the ninth over.

Rohit, who made a comeback to the team after an injury, was brutal on veteran Kemar Roach, hitting him for two fours and a maximum ? his trademark pull shot, as India fetched 15 runs off the 10th over and raced to 67/0.

By the time Alzarri Joseph (2/45) trapped him leg-before, India were on their way towards an easy win in a milestone game. Earlier, Chahal and Sundar wreaked havoc on slow track as the West Indies batters made a beeline to the pavilion, save Jason Holder (57; 4x6) and Fabian Allen (29), whose 78-run stand for the eighth-wicket helped the team go past the 160-run mark.

Put into bat, West Indies lost opener Shai Hope (8; 2x4) cheaply after he was castled by Mohammed Siraj (1/26) in the third over as the visitors lost their first wicket for 13.

Hope had hit Siraj for two successive boundaries, but on the next his inside edge, while attempting a drive, shattered the middle and leg stump. Brandon King (13;2x4) started with a boundary, and then was joined by one-down Darren Bravo (18 off 34 balls; 3x4), as the two tried to resurrect the innings, but could only add 31 runs for the second wicket.

Bravo struck two boundaries off pacer Prasidh Krishna (2/29) in the sixth over, as the visitors crawled to 28/1 after six overs. The duo mixed caution and aggression as West Indies was poised at 39/1 after 10 overs.

But Sundar pegged back the visitors by removing King and Bravo in the 12th over as the visitors slipped to 45/3.
Sundar first sent back King, who chipped it to short mid-wicket where Suryakumar Yadav took an excellent catch. And then he trapped Bravo in front of the wicket, using his straight and flat delivery.

Then it was Chahal, who took two wickets in two successive deliveries in the 20th over as he removed both hard-hitting batters ? Nicholas Pooran (18; 3x4), whom he trapped in the front. This was Chahal's 100th ODI wicket.

Off the next ball, he cleaned up Kieron Pollard (O) with his googly that knocked the rival skipper's off-stump. West Indies were in a spot of bother as they lost half the side for just 71.

Chahal was on a rampage as he then removed Shamarh Brooks (12), who edged to stumper Rishabh Pant, as West Indies was teetering at 78/6. However, Holder and Allen tried to take the game deep. While Holder struck four sixes, Allen hit two boundaries, before Sundar lobbed a return catch of his bowling to send Allen back.

The team eventually was bundled out in 43.5 overs with Chahal removing last man Alzarri Joseph, to take his fourth.
The second ODI will be played at the same venue on February 9.

Rohit Sharma & Co. thrash West Indies by 6 wickets as India register comprehensive win in 1000th ODI

Rohit Sharma enjoyed a brilliant game as captain of the Indian team after making his comeback from a hamstring injury, in the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday. It was Rohit's first ODI as the full-time captain of the Indian team and he led from the front on the field. The Hitman could not have hoped for a better start as India defeated West Indies by 6 wickets in the series-opener of the three-match rubber.

Rohit won the toss and opted to bowl first, inviting West Indies to bat in the first ODI. The bowlers got the hosts off to a brilliant start as West Indies were reduced to 79/7 inside just 23 overs. While the bowlers produced an exceptional performance, they also needed some help from the Decision Review System (DRS).

Skipper Rohit reviewed as many as three not-out decisions by the on-field umpires during the West Indies innings and ended up getting all of them right. All three decisions were overturned by the third umpire as India had a field day in terms of using the DRS accurately.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was left impressed by India's brilliant usage of the DRS and came up with an interesting suggestion. Gavaskar said it was time to replace 'Dhoni Review System' - a famous term used by the commentators and fans for the DRS, referring to former India captain MS Dhoni's ability to get reviews right more often than not.

Gavaskar suggested that now that Rohit is also making brilliant DRS calls, the term 'Dhoni Review System' can be replaced by 'Definitely Rohit System'. "Rohit Sharma got those reviews spot on. Earlier when Dhoni used to get more right than wrong, it was called as Dhoni Review System. Now you can term it as ‘Definitely Rohit System’," Gavaskar said while commentating during the game.

Later, speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said he used to use the term 'Dhoni Review System' for former skipper Dhoni when he was part of the Indian team. However, he would now like to call it Rohit's system after witnessing the current Indian skipper's success rate with the DRS.

“When Dhoni was there I used to call it the Dhoni Referral System. And I mentioned it in commentary that you can now call it the Rohit system because he is getting it absolutely right so far,” said Gavaskar.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar combined to pick up seven wickets between them and derail West Indies's innings. The visitors were bundled out for a paltry 176 runs and lost the game with as many as 22 overs to spare as India chased down the target comfortably.

India got off to a good start in the run-chase as skipper Rohit slammed a brilliant half-century (60 off 51 balls) and added an 84-run stand for the first wicket with Ishan Kishan (28). The hosts did lose a few quick wickets after Rohit's departure but Suryakumar Yadav (34) and Deepak Hooda (26) added an unbeaten stand of 62 runs for the 5th wicket to take India over the line comfortably.
