'They played a good game': Carlo Ancelotti lauds India's fighting spirit despite 4-0 loss

Brazil marked their first-ever friendly against India with a convincing 4-0 victory at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday, with Samuel Lino scoring twice while Estevao and Pedro also found the net. Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti fielded a star-studded starting XI featuring Vinicius Jr., Marquinhos and Estevao, drawing huge excitement from the thousands of fans who packed the iconic Kolkata venue.&nbsp;India, however, showed little fear in the opening stages and managed to trouble the five-time world champions on the counter. Manvir Singh and Ryan Williams were particularly effective as the hosts looked to exploit spaces behind Brazil's defence. The pressure finally told in the 28th minute when Brazil opened the scoring. Estevao cut inside from the right and unleashed a low effort from the edge of the box that squeezed past Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu at the near post.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/kolkata-finally-wakes-up-thousands-flock-to-salt-lake-stadium-for-historic-india-brazil-clash-1791039322125">Kolkata finally wakes up: Thousands flock to Salt Lake stadium for historic India-Brazil clash</a>&nbsp;Brazil doubled their advantage just before half-time. Estevao again played a key role, sending a clever ball from the right towards Pedro, who fired a shot from an angle. The effort went through Gurpreet's hands and found the back of the net in the 42nd minute. India returned from the break with greater attacking intent and came close to pulling one back. Ryan Williams saw an effort cleared off the line, while Manvir Singh continued to look for openings as Khalid Jamil's side tried to get back into the contest.&nbsp;Brazil, though, made it 3-0 in the 58th minute after capitalising on an error in India's defensive third. Bijoy Varghese's attempted pass towards the defence was intercepted, allowing Samuel Lino to seize possession and curl a superb effort into the bottom corner. Lino then completed his brace in stoppage time, producing another low finish beyond Gurpreet to complete a comprehensive 4-0 win for Brazil.&nbsp; The defeat came during an international break in which India had earlier drawn 1-1 with Panama. Ryan Williams had put India ahead in that match before Panama levelled, with Jamil's side earning a result against a top-50 opponent after defending compactly and threatening on the counter. Brazil, meanwhile, entered the Kolkata clash after a mixed set of friendly results against Australia, winning one encounter 4-2 before being held to a 1-1 draw in the other.&nbsp; The international window has also offered Brazil an opportunity to rebuild following their round-of-16 exit from this year's FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by Norway. India vs Brazil: Ancelotti's Selecao run riot in Kolkata, beat Blue Tigers 4-0

For days, there had been a strange question hanging over Kolkata. Where was the buzz? Brazil were in town. Five-time world champions. One of the biggest names in the history of football. Yet, in the build-up to their friendly against India, the streets had seemed surprisingly quiet. There were no overwhelming crowds. No city-wide sea of yellow. No sense that one of football's most decorated teams had arrived in a city known for its deep love of the sport.&nbsp; But on Saturday, as the hours ticked towards kick-off, Kolkata finally woke up. And when it did, it made itself heard. The scene outside the Salt Lake Stadium was surreal. Thousands of football fans started making their way towards the venue, turning the area around the stadium into a carnival of colours, chants and anticipation. The most striking part was the sheer diversity of the crowd. There were children, some barely nine or ten years old, arriving with their parents. There were teenagers carrying the excitement of watching their footballing heroes in the flesh. There were young adults, older fans and parents who had clearly waited a long time for an occasion like this.&nbsp;Different generations. One football match. One extraordinary evening. For some, it was about Brazil. For others, it was about India. And for many, it was simply about being present for a moment that they knew would be remembered. The atmosphere outside the stadium was electric. The quietness of the previous few days seemed to have disappeared completely. Instead, the roads around Salt Lake Stadium were filled with noise. “India, India!” The chant echoed through the crowd. Then came another. “Brazil, Brazil!” The two chants competed for space in the Kolkata night, creating a soundtrack that perfectly captured what this match meant to the fans.&nbsp;India supporters arrived wearing the national team's colours, while Brazilian fans proudly displayed yellow jerseys and flags. Some had painted their faces. Some carried flags. Some simply came wearing the shirts of their favourite players. And then there were the children, perhaps the most telling sign of what the occasion meant. For a nine- or ten-year-old football fan, watching Brazil live in Kolkata is not just another match. It is an experience that could become a childhood memory carried for decades.&nbsp; They may not have seen some of Brazil's greatest legends play. They may know Neymar more than Ronaldinho, Vinicius Jr more than Ronaldo, and today's Selecao more than the teams that once dominated the world. But the attraction remains. The yellow shirt still means Brazil. And on this night, it was everywhere.<h2>Kolkata finally found its football voice</h2>The transformation was remarkable. Just hours earlier, questions had surrounded the level of excitement around the fixture. But outside Salt Lake Stadium, there was no such doubt. Football had taken over. Families walked towards the gates together. Groups of friends sang and chanted. Children held flags bigger than themselves. Fans stopped to take photographs, capture videos and simply soak in the atmosphere.&nbsp; For many, the match was almost secondary to the experience of being there. Because this was not just India playing Brazil. This was Kolkata getting to host Brazil. A city that has spent generations arguing, celebrating and sometimes fighting over football had finally been given the kind of occasion it could embrace. And Kolkata embraced it.<h2>A match that brought generations together</h2>Perhaps the most beautiful sight was the number of families arriving together. Parents brought their children. Children dragged their parents towards the stadium. Some had travelled simply to give their kids the chance to see Brazil live. For the younger generation, these are the moments that can shape how they remember football. Years from now, they may not remember every pass or every chance.&nbsp; But they may remember the walk towards Salt Lake Stadium. They may remember the noise. They may remember the Brazilian flags. They may remember thousands of people chanting around them. They may remember standing beside their parents and watching one of football's biggest teams arrive on Indian soil. And they may remember one simple fact: Brazil came to Kolkata, and they were there to see it.<h2>From silence to carnival</h2>The contrast with the build-up could hardly have been greater. There had been questions about the atmosphere. There had been discussion about ticket sales and prices. There had been an absence of the kind of street-level frenzy many expected. But perhaps Kolkata was simply waiting. Waiting for the moment to arrive. And when it did, the city responded in the language it knows best.&nbsp;Football. The roads around Salt Lake Stadium became a meeting point for generations of supporters. The young. The old. The casual fan. The die-hard. The Brazil supporter. The India supporter. Everyone had their own reason for being there. But they shared the same destination. The stadium.&nbsp; And as the chants grew louder outside, one thing became clear. Whatever had been missing from Kolkata in the days leading up to the match had finally arrived. The noise. The colour. The emotion. The anticipation. The football fever.Kolkata had finally woken up. And on a night when India stood across the pitch from five-time world champions Brazil, the city made sure it would not be a silent witness to history.

Kolkata finally wakes up: Thousands flock to Salt Lake stadium for historic India-Brazil clash

The gulf between India and five-time world champions Brazil may be enormous, but India head coach Khalid Jamil wants his players to embrace the occasion rather than be overwhelmed by it. With the Blue Tigers set to face sixth-ranked Brazil at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday in one of the biggest games in Indian football, Jamil has urged his players to handle the pressure, keep their approach simple and give everything on the pitch.&nbsp;India head into the blockbuster encounter less than a week after holding world no. 44 Panama to a 1-1 draw, but Jamil knows Brazil present an entirely different challenge. "Pressure is there. I am not lying. Pressure is there. But we must take pressure," Jamil said at the pre-match press conference on Friday. Asked whether the magnitude of the occasion could lead to sleepless nights, Jamil acknowledged the importance of the game but insisted that his players must focus on their task. "Talking about sleep, everybody knows the importance of this game. And tomorrow, yes, we have to give our best."<h2>Jamil's message to India: Keep it simple</h2>For Jamil, Brazil's stature should not force India to abandon its basic principles. The India coach wants his players to concentrate on their individual responsibilities rather than attempt something extraordinary simply because they are facing one of the world's most decorated teams. "According to me, you must do simple things. Not to do extra," he said.&nbsp;Jamil also warned that against a team of Brazil's quality, even small mistakes could prove costly. “We already told the player, we are playing with good team. Any mistake will cost us very badly. So, we have to give our best and be cautious.” The coach also rejected the idea that India can approach the match with a 'nothing-to-lose' mentality. "No, it is not like that. Yes, we are playing with a good team. One of the best teams in the world. But we have to take responsibility and give our best. Not to take it lightly," he said. "The result, it is not in our hand. If you give your best, anything can happen."<h2>India ready to adapt against Brazil</h2>Jamil is not committing his team to a purely defensive approach against Brazil. Instead, he said India will adapt according to how the game develops. "If it is required to be defensive, we have to be defensive. If we have to attack, we will attack according to the situation," Jamil said. “And yes, if you are playing a stronger team, defensively you have to be strong.” The India coach also warned his players against focusing solely on Brazil's biggest stars, insisting that the Selecao possess quality throughout their squad. "They are defensively very strong. Attacking is good. If we don't focus on one thing, we have to concentrate on the other," he said. "Overall, we have to be alert all the time. Because they have quality players. They don't have only one player. All the players, even a substitute."&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/it-s-my-first-and-last-game-marquinhos-reveals-mindset-ahead-of-brazil-s-india-clash-1791011215212">‘It’s my first and last game’: Marquinhos reveals mindset ahead of Brazil’s India clash</a><h2>‘Fear will be there’: Jamil on Brazil pressure</h2>Jamil accepted that fear and pressure are inevitable when India face a team of Brazil's stature. His message, however, is that his players must learn to manage those emotions rather than allow them to dictate their performance. “Fear will be there. As I told you, pressure will be there. We have to handle pressure. Just go there and give your best. Whatever responsibility is given, you must think on it and do simple things.” With expectations building around the historic encounter, Jamil had a simple message for those supporting the national team. "We have, everyone must support India. Only one word. That's it," he signed off.<h2>Anwar Ali: India must trust Jamil's plan</h2>India defender Anwar Ali echoed his coach's call for composure, saying the players must trust the tactical plan and take responsibility on the pitch. "We have to just go through our coach's plan. So we have to follow that. And in the field, we have to take responsibilities. Every player has to prove themselves and give their 100 per cent," Anwar said.&nbsp; The defender said India's performance against Panama can provide confidence, but believes the team must now turn its attention completely towards Brazil. “I think last match we played very good. But we have to forget that match because we have a very big game tomorrow. So we have to focus on that and give our 100%.” Anwar also acknowledged that India will have to make tactical adjustments because Brazil pose a different challenge from Panama. "As I said, Brazil and Panama have different tactics. So, we have to go through our coach's plan. In that game, we had different plans. So, in this game, maybe we will change," he said. "And maybe we will see what we have done mistakenly in the last game. So, we don't have to do the same."<h2>Anwar calls for calm against Brazil</h2>The India defender said respecting Brazil's quality should not translate into fear or overthinking. "Of course, we have to take pressure because it is a very big game. We don't have to be casual or over-thinking. We just have to focus," he said.“Because everyone knows how Brazil play and what they are. So, we just have to keep calm in the field and give our best.” With the spotlight firmly on the Salt Lake Stadium, Anwar said India's players understand the significance of the occasion and what a strong performance could mean for Indian football. "We just have to give our best so that we can do something in Indian football."

India vs Brazil: ‘We have to handle pressure’, Khalid Jamil tells players ahead of historic clash in Kolkata

Brazil captain Marquinhos believes the extraordinary reception his team has received in India can provide the perfect motivation as the five-time world champions prepare to face India in Kolkata. Playing in India for the first time in his career, Marquinhos admitted that the level of affection for the Brazilian national team has left a strong impression on him. Even after years with the Selecao, the veteran defender said the experience of arriving in a country where supporters have such a deep connection with Brazil was special.&nbsp;“It’s really impressive, the affection and the desire they have to have the national team, to live this moment with the players,” Marquinhos said during his pre-match press conference. For the Brazil captain, however, the best way to repay that affection is on the pitch. He believes performances, victories and the quality of Brazil's football are what ultimately create a genuine connection with supporters. And in Kolkata, the Brazilian squad has received an opportunity to experience that connection first-hand.<h2>‘A golden opportunity’</h2>Marquinhos described Brazil's visit to India as a ‘golden opportunity’, particularly at a time when the national team is attempting to build momentum in a new cycle. He said the players want to reconnect with Brazilian supporters while also recognising the enormous following Brazil enjoys outside the country. India, he suggested, is among the places where the Selecao have particularly strong support.&nbsp; The packed reception surrounding the team has therefore not simply been viewed as a spectacle by the Brazil players. Marquinhos believes it can directly influence their performance. “We have to do this in our favour and as motivation,” he said. The captain wants Brazil to take the warmth and enthusiasm they have experienced in Kolkata onto the pitch and use it to push themselves towards a strong performance and victory.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/india-vs-brazil-football-match-2026-live-streaming-details-venue-prediction-lineups-all-you-need-to-know-1791009825596">India vs Brazil football match 2026: Live streaming details, venue, prediction, lineups. All you need to know</a><h2>‘There are no friendlies for Brazil’</h2>Marquinhos also echoed Carlo Ancelotti's belief that there are effectively no ordinary friendlies when Brazil take the field. For a team carrying the history and expectations of the Selecao, every match comes with pressure. The defender, who has experienced multiple World Cups, said he understands that pressure better than most. But he also stressed that the lessons from his own career cannot simply be imposed on Brazil's emerging generation.&nbsp; The new players must experience their own challenges and draw their own conclusions. For Marquinhos, the combination of experience and new talent can bring fresh enthusiasm to Brazil's next cycle. “Every game is very special,” he said, describing each appearance for Brazil as though it could be his first and last. That mindset, he explained, helps him give everything to the famous yellow shirt without later having regrets.<h2>Brazil looking to rebuild confidence</h2>The India game also comes at an important stage for Brazil as the team looks to move beyond the disappointment of its previous World Cup campaign. Marquinhos insisted that the squad cannot remain focused on what happened in the past. Instead, Brazil's immediate priorities are straightforward: regain confidence, play well and win matches. The longer-term objective remains the World Cup, but Marquinhos believes that success in the next tournament will be built through smaller goals and performances along the way. “This is a cycle,” he said, stressing the importance of using every opportunity to prepare the squad and develop confidence ahead of the next World Cup.<h2>A message for India's players</h2>Marquinhos was also asked about the Indian players who will share the pitch with Brazil, an occasion that could represent a major career moment for several of them. His response was respectful rather than dismissive. He acknowledged that India have been analysed ahead of the match and said every game can produce its own moments and its own story. For the Brazilian captain, the opportunity to play against the Selecao represents a shared dream for players on both sides.&nbsp; And as Brazil prepare for the game, Marquinhos believes the excitement surrounding their arrival in Kolkata can become something more than just a spectacle. It can become fuel. Brazil want to turn India's extraordinary affection for the Selecao into motivation, use the experience to rebuild confidence and leave Kolkata with a performance worthy of the famous yellow shirt.

Brazil captain Marquinhos speaks about India’s love for Brazil, the pressure of the Selecao shirt and rebuilding confidence ahead of the Kolkata clash

Even after years with the Selecao, the veteran defender said the experience of arriving in a country where supporters have such a deep connection with Brazil was special. “It’s really impressive, the affection and the desire they have to have the national team, to live this moment with the players,” Marquinhos said during his pre-match press conference. For the Brazil captain, however, the best way to repay that affection is on the pitch. He believes performances, victories and the quality of Brazil's football are what ultimately create a genuine connection with supporters. And in Kolkata, the Brazilian squad has received an opportunity to experience that connection first-hand. ‘A golden opportunity’ Marquinhos described Brazil's visit to India as a ‘golden opportunity’, particularly at a time when the national team is attempting to build momentum in a new cycle. He said the players want to reconnect with Brazilian supporters while also recognising the enormous following Brazil enjoys outside the country. India, he suggested, is among the places where the Selecao have particularly strong support. The packed reception surrounding the team has therefore not simply been viewed as a spectacle by the Brazil players. Marquinhos believes it can directly influence their performance. “We have to do this in our favour and as motivation,” he said. The captain wants Brazil to take the warmth and enthusiasm they have experienced in Kolkata onto the pitch and use it to push themselves towards a strong performance and victory. Carlo Ancelotti arrived in Kolkata with the aura of one of football’s most decorated coaches, but the Brazil head coach struck a measured tone ahead of his team's historic friendly against India at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday. From India's attacking threat to Brazil's next generation and the pressure of ending a long wait for another World Cup title, Ancelotti touched on several key issues during his pre-match press conference on Friday. The Italian started off by acknowledging the football passion in Kolkata and expressed his happiness at bringing the five-time world champions to India. “We are happy to be here to play against India and to show the quality that our players have,” Ancelotti said, adding that he hoped the match would be entertaining from start to finish.<h2>Ancelotti identifies India threat</h2>Brazil have done their homework on their opponents, with Ancelotti revealing that his coaching staff watched India's recent 1-1 draw against Panama. The Brazil coach specifically singled out Ryan Williams, who scored India's goal against Panama, as a player capable of causing problems. “We saw the last game that they played against Panama. They have a good team. In fact, with the striker Williams, that could be dangerous for us,” Ancelotti said. The acknowledgement is significant for India, who will face a Brazilian defence featuring experienced players such as captain Marquinhos. For Ancelotti, however, the focus is not simply on individual players but on understanding India's overall qualities and characteristics. Brazil are expected to dominate possession and territory, but Ancelotti's comments suggest that India’s attacking players have not gone unnoticed.<h2>‘This is not a test. It is an opportunity’</h2>Ancelotti also played down the idea that Saturday's game is merely an examination for Brazil's younger players. Instead, he described the fixture as an opportunity. “For the squad and for all of the players, this is not a test. This is an opportunity,” he said. Brazil are in the process of developing a new generation of players, and Ancelotti has used the current international window to assess several players who are still establishing themselves at international level. The coach confirmed that goalkeeper Pedro Morisco will start the match, giving the youngster an opportunity to demonstrate his qualities. Ancelotti also refused to reveal Brazil's complete starting XI when asked directly about the lineup against India.<h2>Brazil need to rediscover their ‘joy’</h2>One of the most interesting themes from Ancelotti's press conference was his emphasis on joy. When WION asked what characteristic of Brazilian football he never wants to see disappear, Ancelotti pointed to commitment, quality and, above all, the happiness associated with playing football. “The happiness is a really important quality that the Brazilians have as a culture,” he said. For Ancelotti, that joy cannot be separated from performance. He wants his players to enjoy themselves on the pitch rather than become overwhelmed by the enormous expectations attached to the famous yellow shirt. The message comes as Brazil attempt to build a team capable of competing for major honours again.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/five-time-world-champions-are-in-football-mad-kolkata-yet-the-buzz-is-missing-1790933857400">Five-time world champions are in football-mad Kolkata, yet the buzz is missing</a><h2>‘The last period was not so good’</h2>Brazil have not won the FIFA World Cup since 2002, and Ancelotti acknowledged that the national team has gone through a difficult period since its last triumph. “The last period of the national team was not so good,” he said, while stressing the importance of using a new generation of players to help Brazil compete at the highest level again. The coach pointed to the changing nature of international football, with teams becoming increasingly organised and technology playing a greater role in the modern game. For Ancelotti, rebuilding Brazil is therefore not simply about producing individual stars. It is about creating a team capable of competing collectively at the highest level.<h2>A different challenge from club football</h2>Ancelotti has spent much of his career managing some of Europe's biggest clubs, but he admitted that coaching a national team is a very different challenge. At club level, managers work with their players almost every day. International coaches have only limited time with their squads. That makes player selection, preparation and understanding the characteristics of individual players particularly important. Yet Ancelotti described coaching Brazil as a special and exciting responsibility. The India game gives him another opportunity to work with a squad containing a mixture of established stars and emerging talent.<h2>India ready for a historic night</h2>For India, Saturday's match represents a rare opportunity to face one of the biggest names in world football. Brazil and India will meet in a senior international for the first time at Salt Lake Stadium, with the fixture forming part of India's series of matches against major football nations. India drew 1-1 with Panama in Bengaluru last week before facing Brazil and then Uruguay in Kolkata.&nbsp; For Ancelotti, meanwhile, the fixture is another step in Brazil's preparations and squad-building process. But his message ahead of the game was clear: Brazil will respect India, they have studied their opponents, and their younger players have an opportunity to make an impression. And as the five-time world champions walk out at the Salt Lake Stadium, Ancelotti wants them to do it with the one quality he believes should remain central to Brazilian football — joy.

Selecao's Head coach Carlo Ancelotti respects India, warns of Ryan Williams and calls Brazil’s Kolkata friendly an opportunity for his young players

Brazil vs India: Carlo Ancelotti calls friendly an ‘opportunity’, refuses to reveal starting XI and names this Indian player as 'threat'

There are few footballing names in the world that carry the weight of Brazil. Five World Cup titles. The famous yellow shirt. Pele, Garrincha, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka and Neymar. A footballing identity that has travelled far beyond Brazil's borders and, for generations, found an especially passionate audience in India. And then there is Kolkata. A city where football is not simply a sport but a part of its cultural fabric. A city where club rivalries are passed down through generations, where football debates can begin anywhere, from tea stalls to office corridors, and where the game has historically commanded an almost unmatched emotional following.&nbsp; So, when Brazil arrived in Kolkata ahead of their friendly against India, the expectation was obvious. The city would turn yellow. Brazilian flags would appear on the streets. Posters would go up. Fans would gather outside the team hotel. Yellow jerseys would suddenly become the city's most visible colour. Football would dominate conversations. But, at least in the build-up to Saturday's match, something feels strangely different.&nbsp;Brazil are in Kolkata. The five-time world champions are here. Their players have arrived, their team is staying in the city and preparations for the India game are underway. Yet, beyond the official arrangements, Kolkata feels surprisingly normal. There is no overwhelming Brazil-themed takeover of the city. No explosion of posters across every corner. No unmistakable sense that one of football's biggest national teams has descended on a city that proudly calls itself one of India's football capitals. And that contrast is difficult to ignore. Because this is Brazil. And this is Kolkata.&nbsp; The Selecao's arrival was certainly noticed. Fans turned up hoping to catch a glimpse of the players, while the team's movement from the airport to the hotel was closely followed. But once the convoy disappeared behind the security cordon, the city largely returned to its routine. The streets did not suddenly become yellow. The walls did not suddenly become Brazilian. The football frenzy that many expected has, for now, remained largely absent.<h2>Where are the posters? Where is the yellow?</h2>Walk around parts of Kolkata and the most striking thing is not necessarily what you see, but what you don't. There are no huge waves of Brazilian posters dominating the city. Brazilian flags are not hanging from every balcony. Yellow jerseys are not flooding the streets. There is no overwhelming sense that the city is preparing to host one of the biggest football teams in the world.&nbsp;Of course, there is excitement. There are fans waiting for the match. There is interest in the Brazilian players. There is anticipation about seeing India take on one of the most decorated teams in international football. But excitement and frenzy are not necessarily the same thing. And this feels much closer to anticipation than a full-blown football carnival. That is perhaps what makes the situation so intriguing.&nbsp; If Brazil were visiting a city without a deep football culture, the muted atmosphere might not be particularly surprising. But Kolkata is different. Football has deep roots here. For decades, the sport has been woven into the city's identity. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have built generations of supporters. Children have grown up discussing football with parents and grandparents. The city's football culture has survived changing generations, changing players and changing sporting trends.&nbsp;Brazil, too, has always occupied a special place in Indian football fandom. For generations of Indian supporters, the Brazilian national team represented the romantic side of football, flair, creativity, attacking football and individual brilliance. Brazilian legends became household names even among people who did not regularly watch international football. Which makes the relatively quiet build-up to this match even more curious.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-vini-vini-vinicius-junior-gets-biggest-cheers-as-brazil-touch-down-in-kolkata-1790894568132">WATCH | Vini, Vini! Vinicius Junior gets biggest cheers as Brazil touch down in Kolkata</a><h2>Is the price of the spectacle a factor?</h2>There is also the question of tickets. Not all the available tickets for the India-Brazil friendly have been sold ahead of the match. For an occasion involving a five-time World Cup-winning nation, that is notable. Ticket prices have been one of the talking points around the game, with the cost potentially making the experience difficult for some supporters. And there is an obvious tension here.&nbsp; For a football fan, watching Brazil live in Kolkata could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But for many ordinary supporters, particularly youngsters and families, the price of attending a match can become a significant consideration. The emotional value of seeing Brazil in person may be enormous. The financial cost can be equally real. And perhaps that has contributed to the disconnect between the scale of the occasion and what is visible on the streets. It is one thing to admire Brazil from a television screen or a mobile phone. It is another to pay a premium to watch them live.<h2>Perhaps the real frenzy is still waiting</h2>But there is another possibility. Maybe Kolkata simply has not reached that moment yet. Football atmospheres can change dramatically on match day. A relatively quiet city can transform within a few hours when thousands of supporters begin heading towards the stadium. The yellow shirts could suddenly appear. Flags could come out.Chants could begin. And the roads leading to the stadium could become a sea of football supporters. That is when the absence of posters and street-level frenzy could suddenly become irrelevant. Because once Brazil walk onto the pitch, everything could change. The sight of that famous yellow shirt on an Indian football field could produce the atmosphere that has so far been missing. And perhaps that is what Kolkata is waiting for.<h2>Brazil's arrival is bigger than one friendly</h2>There is also something symbolic about this fixture. India rarely gets the opportunity to host a team with Brazil's footballing pedigree. Brazil are not simply another international opponent. They are a football institution. Five World Cup titles, countless legendary players and a style of football that has influenced generations across the world. For Indian football fans, particularly those who grew up watching Brazil's golden generations, this is an opportunity to see that legacy up close.&nbsp; But football fandom has changed. The generation that grew up idolising Pelé, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho is not necessarily the same generation that follows today's Brazilian team. Social media has changed how fans consume football. The emotional connection that once manifested through posters, flags, murals and street celebrations can now exist almost entirely online. A player can trend globally without a single poster being put up in a city. A fan can celebrate a team without ever wearing its jersey in public. Perhaps the Brazil buzz exists. Perhaps it is simply less visible than it once was.<h2>A strange disconnect</h2>And that is what makes Brazil's visit to Kolkata so fascinating. There is no shortage of ingredients for a football carnival. Brazil are here. India are playing them. The match is taking place in Kolkata. And Kolkata has one of the deepest football cultures in India. On paper, it is almost the perfect combination. Yet the build-up has been surprisingly restrained. There is something almost surreal about knowing that Brazil's players are staying in the city while life around them continues largely as normal.&nbsp; The biggest visible signs of their presence are concentrated around the team's hotel, training and security arrangements. Outside those areas, Kolkata has largely carried on. Perhaps the frenzy is coming. Perhaps it will arrive with the fans on match day. Perhaps the moment Brazil's players step onto the pitch, the city will finally find its voice. Because this match should feel bigger than an ordinary international friendly. It should feel like an event.&nbsp; It is a meeting between one of the world's most decorated football nations and one of India's most football-loving cities. And yet, with Brazil's arrival, there is an unmistakable question hanging over Kolkata: Where is the Brazil buzz? Maybe the answer will come when the whistle blows. Maybe the city will turn yellow after all. For now, though, five-time world champions Brazil are in Kolkata, and one of India's great football cities is surprisingly quiet.

Brazil are in Kolkata to face India, but the five-time World Cup champions have arrived to a surprisingly muted atmosphere amid ticket price concerns

But once the convoy disappeared behind the security cordon, the city largely returned to its routine. The streets did not suddenly become yellow. The walls did not suddenly become Brazilian. The football frenzy that many expected has, for now, remained largely absent. Where are the posters? Where is the yellow? Walk around parts of Kolkata and the most striking thing is not necessarily what you see, but what you don't. There are no huge waves of Brazilian posters dominating the city. Brazilian flags are not hanging from every balcony. Yellow jerseys are not flooding the streets. There is no overwhelming sense that the city is preparing to host one of the biggest football teams in the world. Of course, there is excitement. There are fans waiting for the match. There is interest in the Brazilian players. There is anticipation about seeing India take on one of the most decorated teams in international football. But excitement and frenzy are not necessarily the same thing. And this feels much closer to anticipation than a full-blown football carnival. That is perhaps what makes the situation so intriguing. If Brazil were visiting a city without a deep football culture, the muted atmosphere might not be particularly surprising. But Kolkata is different. Football has deep roots here. For decades, the sport has been woven into the city's identity. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have built generations of supporters. Children have grown up discussing football with parents and grandparents. The city's football culture has survived changing generations, changing players and changing sporting trends. Brazil, too, has always occupied a special place in Indian football fandom. For generations of Indian supporters, the Brazilian national team represented the romantic side of football, flair, creativity, attacking football and individual brilliance. Brazilian legends became household names even among people who did not regularly watch international football. Which makes the relatively quiet build-up to this match even more curious. Also Read: WATCH | Vini, Vini! Vinicius Junior gets biggest cheers as Brazil touch down in Kolkata Is the price of the spectacle a factor? There is also the question of tickets. Not all the available tickets for the India-Brazil friendly have been sold ahead of the match. For an occasion involving a five-time World Cup-winning nation, that is notable. Ticket prices have been one of the talking points around the game, with the cost potentially making the experience difficult for some supporters. And there is an obvious tension here. For a football fan, watching Brazil live in Kolkata could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is another to pay a premium to watch them live. Perhaps the real frenzy is still waiting But there is another possibility. Maybe Kolkata simply has not reached that moment yet. Football atmospheres can change dramatically on match day. A relatively quiet city can transform within a few hours when thousands of supporters begin heading towards the stadium. The yellow shirts could suddenly appear. Flags could come out. Chants could begin. And perhaps that is what Kolkata is waiting for. Brazil's arrival is bigger than one friendly There is also something symbolic about this fixture. India rarely gets the opportunity to host a team with Brazil's footballing pedigree. Brazil are not simply another international opponent. They are a football institution. Five World Cup titles, countless legendary players and a style of football that has influenced generations across the world. For Indian football fans, particularly those who grew up watching Brazil's golden generations, this is an opportunity to see that legacy up close. But football fandom has changed. Perhaps it is simply less visible than it once was. A strange disconnect And that is what makes Brazil's visit to Kolkata so fascinating. There is no shortage of ingredients for a football carnival. Brazil are here. India are playing them. The match is taking place in Kolkata. And Kolkata has one of the deepest football cultures in India. On paper, it is almost the perfect combination. Yet the build-up has been surprisingly restrained. There is something almost surreal about knowing that Brazil's players are staying in the city while life around them continues largely as normal. The biggest visible signs of their presence are concentrated around the team's hotel, training and security arrangements. It should feel like an event. It is a meeting between one of the world's most decorated football nations and one of India's most football-loving cities.

Five-time world champions are in football-mad Kolkata, yet the buzz is missing

Five-time world champions Brazil arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday evening under tight security, beginning their stay ahead of Saturday's much-anticipated friendly against India. The Brazilian contingent landed at around 8:45pm and left through the VIP gate in two buses painted in the Selecao's trademark yellow and green. Two pilot cars led the convoy to the team's hotel on EM Bypass near Science City, while six private vehicles carried other officials.&nbsp; With security arrangements at their highest level, police prevented fans from gathering near the airport or lining the roads along the team's route. Only a small number of supporters managed to catch a glimpse of the Brazilian players. The touring contingent, comprising around 90 people, had an 11-minute window to exit the airport. Police had also planned an eight-minute window for the convoy to reach the hotel. Security was subsequently tightened around the team hotel, with people not associated with the Brazilian delegation kept away from the premises.<h2>Vini gets biggest cheers</h2>Despite the restrictions, the excitement surrounding Brazil's arrival was evident inside the hotel. Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, wearing a yellow hat, received the loudest cheers as chants of ‘Vini, Vini’ rang out through the lobby. The players were seen wearing olive-green hoodies, shorts and yellow caps as they entered the hotel. Brazil, however, arrived without Barcelona forward Raphinha. The winger suffered a right-thigh niggle during Brazil's 4-2 victory over Australia and has returned to Spain for treatment. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti and one player will attend the pre-match press conference at the team hotel on Friday morning. The team will then train at Salt Lake Stadium from 4pm as preparations for the India game continue.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/fifty-years-after-pel-kolkata-hosts-brazil-where-is-bengal-s-own-football-legacy-1790882230630">Fifty years after Pelé, Kolkata hosts Brazil. <h2>Brazil bring special food arrangements</h2>The Selecao have also brought their own chef and hygiene manager to Kolkata, with extensive arrangements made to meet the team's dietary requirements. Meat, cheese and even water have been brought in for the squad, while the hotel has made special provisions for food preparation and storage. "They have a 30-minute window to prepare and consume the food. We will use only Bhetki fish for them. The rest of the meat products, mainly turkey, chicken and lamb, are all imported," a hotel official said. The arrangements highlight the detailed planning involved in hosting one of the world's biggest football teams, with Brazil's staff overseeing everything from food and hygiene to training and preparations.<h2>India's World Cup-level test</h2>The India-Brazil friendly is part of the Blue Tigers' series of matches against World Cup heavyweights. India began the series with a September 25 fixture against Panama in Bengaluru. They will then face two-time world champions Uruguay, coached by former Brazil star Diego Forlan, on October 6. The Blue Tigers are also scheduled to travel to New Zealand for two more friendlies in November. For Brazil, the India game will be their final fixture of the international break. The Selecao arrive in Kolkata after beating Australia 4-2.

<h2>Salt Lake Stadium gets makeover</h2>The Yuva Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as Salt Lake Stadium, has received a fresh makeover ahead of the upcoming fixtures. The stadium has been given a fresh coat of paint, while the playing surface has been revamped with the involvement of Brazilian turf expert Ivan Nascimento. The venue, which hosted matches during the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, will stage Brazil and Uruguay's respective matches against India. With the Selecao now in Kolkata, attention turns to Friday's press conference and training session before Brazil take on India on Saturday.

Indian footballer Daniel Lalhlimpuia says that the country needs its fans behind the players to make the sport grow in the country. Daniel has played three matches for the Indian national team since making his debut in 2016 and currently is part of Malappuram FC for the Super League Kerala season. The forward, in a conversation with WION, also spoke about the significance of upcoming India matches against Brazil (October 3) and Uruguay (October 6). Below is the complete interview:You made your debut for India in 2016, and since then, you have played for multiple ISL teams in Odisha, Chennai, and now you are playing in the Super League Kerala. So, how is Kerala different from the rest of the country in terms of football culture?I think Kerala, from what I have seen right now, is one of the most passionate states for football in India. The fans here have made a big difference compared to other states, because the Kerala league has attracted so many fans. It's a great opportunity for the local boys and the young players to showcase their skills on this stage. How will state-based football leagues like the Super League Kerala help Indian football, and what impact do you see these kinds of leagues having on Indian football? This will help a lot, and the most important thing is to develop players from the grassroots. When you look at it, for example, now there are a lot of players here in Kerala who don't have a chance to go to the I-League or the ISL, but still, they need to develop. So, this is a great opportunity for the players here in Kerala to prove to themselves that they can do it at the next stage. So, this is the next step for the players who are in Kerala especially, to deliver a good performance in this Super League that will help get them to the I-League or even the ISL.What are your expectations from this season of the Super League Kerala? The expectation is very simple—to win the league. I just want to win this league for Malappuram FC and everyone at the club. Everyone, the players and the management, has worked so hard to achieve the target. These are my expectations from this season—to win the league with Malappuram FC.The Indian team is scheduled to play Brazil and Uruguay in the coming days. How do you think these matches against bigger teams will help Indian football? It will help a lot because the opportunity to play against a world champion and larger footballing nations doesn't come very often. I hope the players who are in the national team will take this opportunity and try to prove that India can also do it.Also, it's always better to play against a higher-ranked team to test ourselves and see where we really are. So, this is a great opportunity for the country, for the fans, and also for the players. I hope the boys will do well, fight, and hopefully, we will get a good result. What are your aspirations as far as your India career is concerned? If you ask me if my career could be better? Yeah, of course it could be. But until now, I am happy with my career and what I have done, because sometimes things don't go your way, like getting an injury or facing a few setbacks. But I would say that I don't want to look back on my career saying that I should have done that or I could have done more. The things that are in my hands, I give my 100 percent to, and the rest is out of my control. But the things that are in my hands, I try to control as much as I can and give 100 percent every single time so that I don't regret looking back at my career. And, as far as I'm concerned, I think I'm happy with my career. What do you think that we as a country should be doing more to help Indian football grow?I would say fan engagement, because the fans are a very big part of football. I can't even imagine football without fans, because the support from the fans is something that Indian football really needs. As a footballer, when thousands of fans—or even more—are behind you, then you are motivated automatically.

Indian footballer Daniel Lalhlimpuia highlights fan support as essential for growing the sport. Now playing for Malappuram FC, he also noted the significance of India’s upcoming matches against Brazil and Uruguay.

Brazil's Marta is widely regarded as the best female footballer in the world. Commenting on Marta's influence, Chibber said, "Since my childhood, I've looked up at Marta, Formiga, and the fact that they're still playing and setting records even at this stage is so inspiring which defines that age is just a number. And it shows that if you’re ready to work hard and put your best foot forward, you can achieve whatever you want."

This year, the Indian women's team has already visited six countries: Turkey, Serbia, Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sweden.

Dalima Chhibar, the team's defender, is looking forward to the team's trip to Brazil. She said, "As a team, we’ve never travelled to South America and playing against teams like Venezuela, Chile and Brazil who’re all ranked higher than us is very good exposure, and to travelling to another continent, where the team hasn’t been exposed to will be a very good experience."

Talking about the competition, the Indian team will face against them, she said, "I personally expect them to put their best foot forward. I know one thing for sure that they’re gonna come strong. The players from those teams are very strong physically and they’re very skilful as well.

Taking experiences from prior tours, she said, "The matches in UAE, Bahrain and Sweden have helped us a lot, as the team came together after a long time and we could get match experience and exposure playing against different opponents and tougher opponents. I'm looking forward to meeting players who play the FIFA World Cup and playing against side which is competing in all the FIFA World Cups, it’s gonna be very exciting." This year, the Indian women's team has already visited six countries: Turkey, Serbia, Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sweden. Dalima Chhibar, the team's defender, is looking forward to the team's trip to Brazil. She said, "As a team, we’ve never travelled to South America and playing against teams like Venezuela, Chile and Brazil who’re all ranked higher than us is very good exposure, and to travelling to another continent, where the team hasn’t been exposed to will be a very good experience." Talking about the competition, the Indian team will face against them, she said, "I personally expect them to put their best foot forward. I know one thing for sure that they’re gonna come strong. The players from those teams are very strong physically and they’re very skilful as well. "By playing in Canada, I’ve had the opportunity to play with and against players from the US, Mexico, Chile. I’ve seen their style of play and it’s very different how it is played in Asia, and these teams won’t leave any stone unturned." Chhibar looks pumped up for the upcoming tournament and said, "Going into four nations tournament, I expect a very tough fight from all the teams, but we’re not gonna fear any of our opponents. We’re gonna put the best foot forward with our best performances." × Taking experiences from prior tours, she said, "The matches in UAE, Bahrain and Sweden have helped us a lot, as the team came together after a long time and we could get match experience and exposure playing against different opponents and tougher opponents. The game time helps us reflect on our performances individually as well as the team." Dalima said that the team is eyeing for the World Cup and if they perform well in Asian Cup it'll surely help them qualify for the World Cup. "We're building for a very important tournament which is Women’s Asian Cup and we need to understand our performances and we need the game time and experience as a team. It’s very necessary to understand and test what we are capable of as players and as a team because the women's Asian cup is a very crucial tournament for us and we definitely aim to perform very well there and hopefully qualify for the FIFA World Cup."

India went down 1-6 to Brazil in the opening game of the Women's International football tournament at the Amazon Arena in Manaus, Brazil on Friday.

Manisha Kalyan's equaliser was one of the bright moments for India along with goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan's performance on a night where the hosts were in a dominant mood.

The home side got off to a flying start and took the lead in the first minute itself. Defender Daiana's long ball from the back found skipper Debinha whose initial effort was saved by Aditi Chauhan but the Indian custodian could do nothing about the rebound.

The Indian women roared back seven minutes later with a thrilling counter-attack to level the scores. Manisha picked up the ball on the left in her own half and ran the length of the field before finishing clinically into the far post bottom corner.

Manisha had a big opportunity in the 26th minute to give India the lead on another counter-attack but her shot was blocked.

Brazil created better opportunities, and in the 36th minute, they surged into the lead when Ariadina `Ary` Borges ran down the right-wing and found Duda with a cutback. The ball bounced off, and Giovana Costa was on hand to slot it into the net.

Changing over, a quick-fire double at the start of the second half put Brazil in a commanding position to see the game out.

Ary made it 1-3 in the 52nd minute when she cut in from the left and curled it past Aditi into the far corner. Two minutes later, Kerolin Ferraz ran onto a pass from substitute Geyse Ferreira and smashed it into the roof of the net.

Geyse then got in on the act herself as a blocked shot from the edge of the box fell to her feet and she made no mistake from close range in the 76th minute. Five minutes later, Ary got her second of the match as she tapped in a rebound after Formiga`s shot was saved.

The 43-year-old Formiga was making her final appearance after a career spanning more than 25 years which includes participation at seven Olympic Games and 205 caps for her national team.

India head coach Thomas Dennerby was impressed with Manisha`s goal, terming it "one of the highest quality on a football pitch."

"Individually, it is a top-class goal. It gave us a boost after conceding early on and that allowed us to come back," AIFF quoted Dennerby as saying.

Defensively, Dennerby felt India could have done better while clearing the ball. "We did not concede because we were out of position. There were some weak clearances so we need to be stronger with those because you cannot afford that against such quality teams," he said.

Overall, the 62-year-old stressed on taking the positives out of a fixture against one of the best teams in the world. "Losing to Brazil is nothing to be ashamed of. We take the good things with us. It was a huge experience for them and that will help in the upcoming games," he said.
