Pakistan is intensifying efforts to modernise its nuclear arsenal, driven by its longstanding perception of India as an 'existential threat', according to a US report. In the wake of renewed military tensions in South Asia, the assessment was part of the US Defence Intelligence Agency’s 2025 Worldwide Threat Assessment report, released days after India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The report suggests that Pakistan is focusing on the enhancement of its nuclear capabilities, including it's development of tactical or battlefield nuclear weapons, in an effort to offset India’s conventional military advantage. “Pakistan regards India as an existential threat and will continue to pursue its military modernization effort, including the development of battlefield nuclear weapons,” the report said. The assessment also notes that Pakistan is receiving military and economic support from China to support this modernisation. The report added, "Foreign materials and technology supporting Pakistan’s WMD programs are very likely acquired primarily from suppliers in China, and sometimes are transshipped through Hong Kong, Singapore, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates." While Islamabad still continues to rely heavily on Beijing as its main defence partner, there are growing tensions in this relationship, the reports cite a rise in militant attacks targeting Chinese nationals in Pakistan. The intelligence document also outlines the broader security challenges facing Pakistan. These include ongoing border conflicts, the rise in attack of organisations like Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and the Baloch nationalist militants, as well as several counter-terrorism operations. Despite these efforts, more than 2,500 people were killed in militant violence within Pakistan in 2024. In contrast, the report notes that India views Islamabad only as an 'ancillary security proble' to be managed, and not as a central strategic challenge indicating a divergent threat perception between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

In the wake of renewed military tensions in South Asia, the assessment was part of the US Defence Intelligence Agency’s 2025 Worldwide Threat Assessment report, released days after India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Haunted by a rival? Pakistan sees India as ‘existential threat’, accelerates nuclear modernisation: Report

India is expected to continue its defence relationship with Russia through at least 2025, primarily to ensure access to spare parts for its existing inventory of tanks, aircraft, and other military platforms, according to the US Defence Intelligence Agency’s (DIA) 2025 Worldwide Threat Assessment. The report, presented to the US House Armed Services Committee said that India has reduced the pace of new defence procurements from Russia in recent years. However, it continues to rely heavily on Russian-origin equipment, necessitating ongoing cooperation to maintain operational readiness. India’s inventory includes Russian-made Su-30MKI fighter jets, T-90 tanks and a range of missile systems, all of which require regular servicing and spare parts. The assessment also points to broader geopolitical calculations behind India’s sustained engagement with Moscow. While India has deepened its defence ties with Western countries, particularly the United States and France, it retains strategic relations with Russia to offset the growing proximity between Moscow and Beijing. The report suggests that India is likely to balance its partnerships without aligning exclusively with any single power bloc. India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing, under its “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) initiative, is also highlighted. The country is increasingly focusing on indigenisation of key military components, yet the transition from imports to domestic production remains gradual. As a result, legacy systems sourced from Russia will continue to require external support in the near term. Beyond military matters, the DIA report outlines India’s broader security priorities, including managing tensions along its border with China, responding to cross-border terrorism from Pakistan, and addressing internal security challenges. The report identifies India as a key regional power whose actions will shape the strategic landscape of the Indo-Pacific. India’s naval expansion and development of indigenous missile capabilities are also noted as indicators of its efforts to modernise its armed forces. However, the report underscores that dependency on external sources, particularly Russia, remains a critical vulnerability that India is yet to fully address. The assessment portrays India as navigating a complex defence environment, balancing legacy partnerships with emerging strategic goals and domestic production ambitions.

Early monsoon has hit Mumbai, 16 days ahead of the usual time. This phenomenon has occurred for the first time since 2001. Streets in low-lying areas in Mumbai have been submerged, and waterlogging has been witnessed in parts of the maximum city. The public transport in localities that have received heavy rainfall has been affected. Worli's Metro Line is one among them, where waterlogging has been seen in the underground station.
