At least eight people have died of suspected heat stroke in India’s eastern state of Odisha in the last three days. A total of 159 suspected heat-related deaths have been reported in Odisha this summer.

Mercury crosses 45°c mark in north India

At least eight poll officials have died in the eastern Indian state of Bihar in the last 48 hours due to a persistent heatwave. Authorities said 10 more people died in the state ahead of the seventh phase of Lok Sabha polls slated to be held on June 1. Out of 18 deaths, 11 occurred in Rohtas district, while six in Bhojpur and one in Buxar. Heatwave conditions have exacerbated in Bihar, where mercury has constantly touched over 44 degrees Celsius over the past several days.

The state has recorded the highest temperature of 47.1 degrees Celsius this season so far.

Due to the fatal heatwave conditions, the state government on Wednesday (May 29) ordered all educational institutions to remain closed till June 8.

On Friday (May 31), at least 40 people died due to a heatwave in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Out of those 40, at least 25 were deployed on poll duty.

Other states have reported heat-related deaths as well. According to officials, heat-related deaths were reported from Odisha (10), Bihar (8), Jharkhand (4) and Uttar Pradesh (1) on Thursday also. Rajasthan has reported at least five heat-related deaths so far.

The India Meteorological Department earlier today said that heatwave conditions are likely to persist in states like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand.

A heatwave is declared when the average temperature of the day exceeds normal temperature by at least 6.5 degrees Celsius.

The abnormal conditions have also led to the shortage of water in many states, including Delhi. The government here has now approached the apex court of the country to seek directives to the Haryana government to release more water downstream.

The Rajasthan High Court stated a day earlier that heatwave&nbsp;had to be declared a national emergency after learning about fatalities brought on by this month's harsh weather.

Following this, the officials in the Ballia region warned residents, especially senior citizens&nbsp;and others suffering from other illnesses, to remain indoors during the day.

SK Yadav, a medical officer in the district, said on Sunday that over the past three days, some 300 patients had been admitted to the district's hospitals for various ailments aggravated by the scorching heat. He added that patients above the age of 60 or older were showing symptoms of vomiting, fever, diarrhoea, and breathing difficulties.&nbsp;

Authorities have cancelled the leave applications of many medical personnel and provided additional beds in the emergency wards to accommodate patients.&nbsp;

Never Happened in Ballia

RS Pathak, who lost his father on Saturday, told AP, "This has never happened in Ballia. I have never seen people dying because of the heat in such large numbers. People fear venturing out. The roads and markets are largely deserted." He added that he&nbsp;witnessed an increase in the number of patients at the hospital emergency ward, where his father was also admitted.

India Meteorological Department's scientist Atul Kumar Singh said that the temperature across Uttar Pradesh is expected to be above normal and no relief is expected in the next 24 hours. The weather agency has issued an alert in some parts.&nbsp;

The state's health minister Brijesh Pathak has opened a probe into the cause of the deaths of so many people in Ballia.&nbsp;

The scorching heat in Bihar over the last two days has caused some 42 deaths, among which 35 occurred at two hospitals in the state's capital city Patna. Over 200 patients have also been admitted to hospitals suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting are being treated.&nbsp;

On Saturday (June 17), Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 44.7 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

The study said that in India and Bangladesh, such "humid heat event(s) could be expected every 1-2 years".

<h2>India's heatwave planning 'most advanced': Study</h2>

The study also highlighted a range of solutions to heat-related harms from the individual to the regional levels respectively.

They are currently implemented as patchwork, to various degrees, across the countries studied, with India having the most advanced heatwave planning, it said.

It, however, added that these solutions are often out of reach for the most vulnerable people, and highlighted the need to improve vulnerability assessments and design interventions that account for group-specific needs.

<h2>Heatwaves one of the deadliest disasters: Expert</h2>

According to Chandra Sekhar Bahinipati of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Tirupati, while the world has "recognised heat waves as one of the deadliest disasters", there is a lack of knowledge with respect to who is vulnerable, loss and damage estimation, household coping mechanisms, and the most effective heat action plans.&nbsp;

"As it often happens, marginalised people are the worst affected. Many of them are still recovering from the pandemic, and from past heat waves and cyclones, which leaves them trapped in a vicious cycle. It is fundamental to implement mitigation and adaptation strategies to avoid visible and invisible loss and damage," said Emmanuel Raju, Director of Copenhagen Centre for Disaster Research at the University of Copenhagen.&nbsp;

In neighbouring Bangladesh, temperatures breach the 40 degree Celsius mark in the capital city of Dhaka on Saturday. It was the hottest day in 58 years, causing road surfaces to melt. A temperature emergency might be declared if the heat does not recede soon, an official said.&nbsp;

In China, April temperatures have set new records in several locations, such as Chengdu, Zhejiang, Nanjing, Hangzhou and other areas of the Yangtze River delta region.&nbsp;

Several south-east Asian countries are also battling record heat. Luang Prabang in Laos recorded a temperature of 42.7 degree Celsius this week, the highest reliable temperature in its history, Herrera said. In Thailand, temperatures reached 44.6 degree Celsius in Tak province on Sunday. Temperatures are predicted to reach 45 degree Celsius this week.

Sweltering heat melts much of Asia with temperatures likely to rise further

A new government report released by India has painted a grim picture of the consequences of climate change. Reportedly, India faced more than 200 days of heatwaves in the summer season this year alone, compared to only 36 last year. The five-time jump in the days of extreme mercury temperatures has left the experts befuddled at the express pace of climate change.&nbsp;

India’s earth sciences minister Jitendra Singh released the report and stated, “India experienced prolonged spells of heatwave during March and April 2022, hence the average maximum temperature of March 2022 had been the highest for All India (33.1C) and northwest India (30.7C) and it had been the second highest for central India (35.2C) as per the data during the period 1901 to 2022.”

A shortened Spring season

It is pertinent to note that the spring season which usually starts in February and stretches till the first few weeks of April was cut short this year. An intense hot weather climate presided over India from March which had a dire effect on the agricultural output of India.

Before the short spring, India was expected to fill the gap in wheat production left by Russia and Ukraine, currently embroiled in a war. However, the hot weather meant that wheat crops were destroyed and the government had to rein its approach, a couple of notches.&nbsp;

Pakistan and India saw the hottest March-April period on record.

It would take months to calculate the toll of this heatwave in terms of lives lost, economic damage, hospitalisation, lost pay, and so on.

However, among the first visible effects of the heatwave was the transformation of a bountiful wheat crop in India into an agricultural disaster. As a result, the country has blocked the export of millions of tonnes.&nbsp;

This pushed up worldwide prices dramatically in a market already crippled by the hampered exports from&nbsp;war-torn Ukraine.

Global warming made killer heatwaves in India, Pakistan 30 times more likely: Report

Monsoon arrives in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, temperatures to drop in northern India

On Sunday, the Indian national capital Delhi’s maximum temperature touched 49 degrees Celsius as a scorching heatwave took an extreme toll on the people who were left gasping for relief.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the maximum temperatures in two places in the city breached the 49 degrees mark—49.2 degrees Celsius in northwest Mungeshpur and 49.1 degrees Celsius in western Najafgarh.

While the maximum temperatures in other parts of the city ranged&nbsp;from 45 to 47 degrees Celsius.

By evening, the minimum temperature was recorded at 25 degrees Celsius.

The situation was the same in the adjoining states, with neighbouring Gurgaon in Haryana state recording 48.1 degrees Celsius, the highest since May 10, 1966, when the city logged 49 degrees Celsius.

Weather forecasters said a cyclonic circulation over Punjab and Haryana will induce pre-monsoon activity that will provide some relief from the intense heat on Monday and Tuesday.

There is a huge crowd outside the Mughal gardens. The hill stations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam are completely packed. Tourists who are in Kashmir are saying that it's the best time to come to Kashmir to beat the heat. ''I had not seen Kashmir before; we were to travel abroad but then we thought of coming here. We went from 39 degrees to 20 degrees in Srinagar and it's beautiful. Preserve the beauty of our country. How people in foreign countries maintain the environment should be done in the same way here'' said Vikrant Joshi, Tourist.
