<p>However, this year it has been clearly stated that the district officials would be visiting the freedom fighters at their homes and felicitating them, instead of it being done in Chennai, in the presence of dignitaries. The Health Minister has also ben deputed to visit homes for special children and disribute sweets, as opposed to the routine practice of allowing the kids to visit the state secretariat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides hoisting the national flag at 8:45am, the Chief Minister would also be felicitating frontline Covid-19 warriors and presenting them with certificates. The government has urged the public to stay indoors and watch the events on television.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a separate set of guidelines issued for Vinayaka Chathurthi, the government has prohibited erecting Ganesha idols, celebrations in public, carrying them around the city in processions and also immersing them in water bodies. <p>India is likely to impose a nationwide ban on plastic bags, cups, small bottles, straws and some types of sachets next month as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to reduce use of pollution-causing, single-use plastic.</p>

<p>But the plans have stoked fears among consumer firms, which, use plastic in packaging for everything from sodas and biscuits to ketchup and shampoo.</p>

<p>"This has created an existential issue for multiple sectors," said the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), a lobby group, in a two-page draft note, seen by Reuters, which is likely to be finalised and sent to the government in the coming days.</p>

<p>The CII will ask the government to consult industry executives and define what will be categorised as single-use plastics, while also pitching for some exemptions, according to the note.</p>

<p>It says small-sized plastic bottles used for pharmaceutical or health products should be exempted as there is no alternate available. Sachets made from so-called multi-layered packaging should also not be banned, as that could disrupt supplies of key products such as biscuits, salt and milk, the CII draft says.</p>

<p>A senior Indian government official said several industry representations were being reviewed, but the aim was to "get rid of the menace of plastic pollution" without causing disruption.</p>

<p>In an Independence Day speech on August 15, Modi urged people and government agencies to "take the first big step" on October&nbsp;2 towards freeing India of single-use plastic.</p>

<p>Coca-Cola said in a statement that all its primary packaging does not consist of single-use plastic. Pepsi said its target was to make 100 per cent of its packaging recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable by 2025. Hindustan Unilever did not respond to a request for comment.</p>

<p>Amazon did not respond but has previously said that it plans to replace single-use plastic in its packaging by June 2020.</p>

<p>"The ban has ramifications for all sectors like food processing, dairy, garments, toys," said Jayesh Rambhia of All India Plastic Manufacturers Association, which has 22,000 companies as members. "People, and companies are pulling their hair today."<br />

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day announced the creation of a new post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) for better coordination among Army, Navy and the Air Force.</p>

<p>The government took this decision nearly two decades after the Kargil Review Committee had recommended the constitution of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) for enhanced coordination between all three wings of the armed forces and the government.</p>

<p>"To further enhance coordination between our forces, I announce a big decision today, India will now have a Chief of Defence Staff- CDS," Modi said his Independence Day speech here.</p>

<p>"This is going to make the forces even more strong," added.</p>

<p><meta charset="utf-8" />Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said with the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A in Jammu and Kashmir, the dream of "One Nation, One Constitution" has been realised, as he lashed out at the opposition speaking against the move, asking if they felt it was so necessary why didn't they make it permanent in the past 70 years.</p>

<p>"We do not believe in creating problems or prolonging them. In less than 70 days of the new Government, Article 370 has become history, and in both Houses of Parliament, 2/3rd of the members supported this step We want to serve Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh," the PM said.</p>

<p>Modi also told the nation that it was essential for his government to establish a Jal Shakti Ministry, as nearly half of the households in the nation do not have piped water connection.</p>

<p>"India understands the importance of water conservation and thus, a new ministry for Jal Shakti has been created. Steps have been taken to make the medical sector even more people-friendly," he said.</p>

<p>Modi said he has also cracked down on sections of the bureaucracy which sought a delay in implementation of projects and were allegedly involved in graft.</p>

<p>"Such officers were told to leave now. Now the nation wants to develop on a fast speed. There is no place for them to obstruct the pace of development," he said, referring to the recent orders issued by his government to&nbsp;forcefully retire officials&nbsp;under various Ministries.</p>

<p>On black money and corruption, Modi said his government is continuously striving towards eliminating the menace and extract the money illicitly hoarded by corrupt individuals and firms.</p>

<p>Modi also reiterated his vision of "ease of doing business", claiming that his government has been constantly removing obsolete laws which serve no purpose than to embroil entrepreneurs in red tape.</p>

<p>"I always ask this question..can we not reduce the interference of Governments in people's lives? Let our people have the freedom to follow their own aspirations. We have abolished a lot of laws," he said.</p>

<p>The Prime Minister further added that he would like to move beyond ease of doing business. "The government wants to provide of 'ease of living' to the people," he added.</p>

<p>Linking the adverse living standard to the "population explosion", Modi said the need of the hour is to have a greater discussion and awareness on family size. Those who restrict the number of offsprings are actually doing a service to the nation, the PM further said.</p>

<p>"Population explosion in the country will create various problems for the coming generations. Those who follow the policy of small family also contribute to the development of the nation, it is also a form of patriotism," he said.</p>

<p>On the 73rd Independence Day, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer Harshpal Singh, who is slated to receive the peacetime gallantry medal - Kirti Chakra today, recalled how he eliminated three Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/jammu-and-kashmir-terrorists-attack-police-party-in-anantnag-three-crpf-personnel-one-terrorist-killed-226570">terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir</a> last year.</p>

<p>Singh, a Deputy Commandant in the CRPF has won five gallantry awards since 2004 when he joined the CRPF.</p>

<p>"On September 12, 2018, we received an input that three JeM had fired at a police post and forged into a nearby jungle. To hunt them down, our team, along with the local police, launched a cordon and search operation in the area," said Singh, reminiscing the incident, which took place near the Mata Vaishno Devi University in Jammu's Jhajjar-Kotli.</p>

<p>The team took a sigh of relief when an informer told them that the terrorists were hiding in a house, with only a door and grilled window.</p>

<p>"We were relieved as the house had only one exit. The next morning, as we were advancing towards the spot, we got fired upon. As we had no cover, we crawled through to the house, from where they were firing. Next, we decided that one of us would go forward and do targetted firing at the door of the house to detest them from coming out of it," said Singh.</p>

<p>As a commander, Singh advanced and took cover behind a tree. "As I started firing, one of the terrorists, standing behind the door, got hit," he added.</p>

<p>As Singh, along with the team was contemplating what to do next, a bullet hit his shoulder.</p>

<p>Unfazed by the bleeding, he decided to stay at the spot and fire at the door.</p>

<p>"Had I left the spot at that point, the terrorists would have caused collateral damage to the people of the village," said Singh, with a gleaming smile.</p>

<p>As a last measure, they threw 2-3 grenades at us, which fell 8-10 metres away from me.&nbsp;</p>

<p>My left side got badly injured and I started bleeding profusely, he recalled.</p>

<p>"I came out of the cover of the tree and fired at the door again and killed the second terrorist. Later, another team took cover and killed the third terrorist. No villagers were hurt and the operation was completed," Singh said.</p>

<p>Harshpal Singh, who is the only CRPF Personnel to be awarded Kirti Chakra, thanked his team members for trusting in him during the counter-terrorist operation.</p>

<p>Singh has won several gallantry awards and is currently posted in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district.</p>

<p>In 2008, he received his first award for neutralising five Naxals in the Hazaribagh area.</p>

<p>In 2014, he killed a Naxal with two lakh bounty on his head in Chhattisgarh`s Kunti area.</p>

<p>The successive years saw an increasing opposition to British subjugation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Arunachal Pradesh, Matmur Jamoh refused to bow down to the Britishers. He breathed his last in Andaman's Cellular Jail where he was lodged after killing a British officer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among others who rose against the colonialists was Rani Gaidinliu. A Naga spiritual leader, she became a leading political figure in Manipur.</p>
