The Balakot airstrike was carried out by India in response to the terror attack by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama in which at least 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed on February 14.

Following the airstrike, Pakistan had violated the Indian airspace on February 27 when Abhinandan had strayed into Pakistani territory after shooting down F-16. He was released through the Attari-Wagah border after spending two days in Pakistan's custody.

"On this festival of national fervour, 3,500 girl students drawn from 41 government schools in Delhi; 5,000 boy spectators and 700 NCC cadets (Army, Navy and Air Force) of 17 schools, through their willing and committed presence will display 'strength in unity' by the formation of words Naya Bharat," read a statement from the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Modi will lead the nation in celebrating the 73rd Independence Day at the iconic Red Fort in the national capital on Thursday.&nbsp;

He will unfurl the National Flag and deliver the customary address to the nation from the ramparts of the monument.

On his arrival at the Lahore Gate of Red Fort, the Prime Minister will be received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State (MoS) for Defence Shripad Naik and Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra, the statement read.

The Guard of Honour contingent for the Prime Minister will consist of one officer and 24 men each from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Delhi Police.&nbsp;

The Guard of Honour will be positioned directly in front of the National Flag across the moat below the ramparts.&nbsp;

With the Air Force being the coordinating Service this year, the Guard of Honour will be commanded by Wing Commander Anuj Bharadwaj.&nbsp;

Army contingent in the Prime Minister's Guard will be commanded by Major Laishram Tony Singh, the Navy contingent by Lieutenant Commander Prashanth Prabhakar, while Squadron Leader S B Gowda will lead the Air Force contingent and the Delhi Police contingent by Additional DCP Bikram HM Meena.

The Army contingent for Prime Minister`s Guard is drawn from the 2 Garhwal Rifles. The 2nd Battalion of Garhwal Rifles was raised on March 1, 1901, at Lansdown, the statement read.

"During World War I, Rifleman Gabar Singh Negi of 2 Garhwal Rifles was awarded Victoria Cross (Posthumously), the highest gallantry award possible in the Royal Indian Army.&nbsp;

The battalion was conferred with ten Battle Honours in World War I. The saga of bravery continued for the brave Garhwalis during World War II wherein they were conferred with the Battle Honour Kuantan Malaya.&nbsp;

The Battalion suffered heavy causalities during World War II and was re-raised on May 11, 1946, at Yol Cantt in Himachal Pradesh," it stated.

Post-independence, the Battalion actively participated in the 1965 Indo-Pak War, wherein it was tasked to capture the famous OP Hill on October 3, 1965.&nbsp;

Two Officers, one JCO and 19 other ranks attained martyrdom during the operation and the Battalion was awarded one Mahavir Chakra and two Sena Medals, the Defence Ministry statement stated.

The Battalion was awarded the Chief of Army Staff Unit Citation and General-Office Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command Unit Citation for its exemplary tenure in the Kashmir Valley as part of Operation `Rakshak` from May 1994 to September 1996.

During its tenure in Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir from September 2010 to November 2013, the outstanding achievements of the battalion were once again recognised as it received a citation of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command Unit.

After inspecting the Guard of Honour, the Prime Minister will proceed to the ramparts of the Red Fort where he will be greeted by Rajnath Singh, Shripad Naik, Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh.

The GOC Delhi area will conduct the Prime Minister to the dais to unfurl the National Flag.

The Indian Air Force band will play the National Anthem when the National Guard presents 'Rashtriya Salute' while the Prime Minister unfurls the National Flag.

&nbsp;All Service personnel in uniform will stand and salute.&nbsp; 
The Band will be commanded by Junior Warrant Officer Pankaj Babu.&nbsp;

Flying Officer Preetam Sangwan will assist the Prime Minister in the unfurling of the National Flag.

Two Air Force Officers, Flight Lieutenant Jyoti Yadav and Flight Lieutenant Mansi Geda will be positioned on either side of the saluting dais for Prime Minister Modi for ADC duties.

The unfurling of the national flag will synchronise with the 21 Gun Salute fired by the valiant gunners of the elite 2233 Field Battery (Ceremonial).&nbsp;

The ceremonial battery will be commanded by Lieutenant Colonel C Sandeep and the Gun Position Officer will be Regiment Havildar Major Kolate Rajesh Sripati.

The National Flag Guard comprising 32 men and one officer each from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Delhi Police will present Rashtriya Salute at the time of unfurling of the National Flag by the Prime Minister.&nbsp;

Wing Commander Kunal Khanna from Indian Air Force will be in command of this Inter-Services Guard and Police Guard.

The Naval Contingent for the National Flag Guard will be commanded by Lieutenant Commander Satwinder Singh, the Army contingent by Major Surya Prakash, Air Force contingent by Squadron Leader Ravindra and Delhi Police contingent by Additional DCP Rohit Rajvir Singh.

The Army contingent for the National Flag Guard is drawn from the 5th Battalion of the First Gorkha Rifles.&nbsp;

The Battalion had a prestigious opportunity to serve in the United Nations Mission in Sudan from 2008 to 2009. The Battalion is presently performing the duty of Ceremonial Army Guard to the President of India.

The battalion was conferred with ten Battle Honours in World War I. The saga of bravery continued for the brave Garhwalis during World War II wherein they were conferred with the Battle Honour Kuantan Malaya. The Battalion suffered heavy causalities during World War II and was re-raised on May 11, 1946, at Yol Cantt in Himachal Pradesh," it stated. Post-independence, the Battalion actively participated in the 1965 Indo-Pak War, wherein it was tasked to capture the famous OP Hill on October 3, 1965. "We are at a special juncture," the president said adding that the government was enabling all basic provisions including progressive, egalitarian laws and provisions related to RTE, accessing public information through RTI, reservations in education and employment and other facilities for deprived communities.

It also includes justice for our daughters by abolishing unequal practices such as instant Triple Talaq, the President added.

"This year also marks the 550th birth anniversary of one of the greatest, wisest and most influential Indians of all time Guru Nanak Devji. He was the founder of Sikhism but the reverence &amp; respect he commands go far beyond just our Sikh brothers and sisters."

The Khan of Kalat, Mir Ahmad Yar Khan, declared the independence of Balochistan from Britain on August 12, 1947.

The newly independent region was again annexed by Pakistan in 1948. After the accession, the Pak army entered Balochistan on April 15.

Before joining with Pakistan on March 27, 1948, &nbsp;the Balochistan Parliament had rejected several proposals of merging with Pak between December 14, 1947 and February 25, 1948.&nbsp;

The Pak army attacked the residence of the Khan of Kalat on October 6, 1958. In the same month, several political leaders of the province were arrested including the Khan of Kalat.&nbsp; 
Pakistan had also imposed Martial law in Balochistan in October 1958.

During the 1960s, protests led by Nawab and tribesmen erupted against the government in several parts of the region. Students also formed organisation and joined the protest movement against the Pakistan establishment by 1967.

The Balochi protest groups fought with the Pakistan government in 1967 and 1968. The clashes led to widespread oppression and fall of the Balochi rebels in 1969.

The government announced the formation of the province of Balochistan in July 1971 after elections. The region was later declared as a province with Mir Ghaus Bakhsh Bizenjo as the Governor.

With assistance from Iraq and Afghanistan, the rebels continued their fight against the Pakistan government which was being provided military support from the US, France and China.

The then prime minister Benazir Bhutto dismissed Governor Bizenjo and Provincial Assembly of Balochistan on February 12, 1973, and appointed a new governor Sardar Akbar Khan Bugti.&nbsp;

The clashes in the region led to the death of around 1,000 people.

"We are taking every input seriously that is being received by our agencies. Apart from the local police, we are also getting the assistance from the security unit of Delhi Police, National security guard, Special protection group, and different components of army," She further added.

The government is expected to announce India's top military honour for Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who shot down F-16 in an aerial conflict with Pakistan in February 2019.

Abhinandan is likely to be conferred with Vir Chakra which was recommended by the Indian Air Force. The Vir Chakra is the third highest gallantry award in the military after the Param Vir Chakra and the Mahavir Chakra.

Along with Abhinandan, five Mirage-2000 fighter pilots who had dropped bombs on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Balakot in Pakistan, are likely to be awarded Vayu Sena Medal for their act of bravery.

Nike said Tuesday it had withdrawn a shoe displaying an early version of the American flag, with US media reporting the decision came after former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick warned the design was associated with slavery.

Kaepernick's protests gained national attention and drew repeated criticism from President Donald Trump, who urged NFL owners to fire players who knelt during the anthem.

Kaepernick said the design featuring 13 white stars in a circle was offensive because it was associated with a period of slavery, which was legal in the US after independence from Britain.

White supremacist groups hostile to diversity have also recently appropriated the design, the newspaper said.

Nike shipped the shoes to retailers but then asked for them back, and has taken the design off its website, the Journal reported.

US Senator Ted Cruz said on Twitter that because of the decision to pull the shoes, his days as a Nike customer were over.

Riyadh on Saturday recalled its ambassador to Berlin in protest at comments by Germany's Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel which were interpreted as a suggestion that Hariri acted under Saudi orders. Without mentioning Saudi Arabia directly, Gabriel had said Thursday that he shared concerns about the threat of instability and bloodshed in Lebanon and warned against "adventurism". "Lebanon has earned the right to decide on its fate by itself and not become a pinball of Syria or Saudi Arabia or other national interests," he had said earlier in the week. Germany's foreign ministry had yet to comment on the row, but in a statement it welcomed Hariri's "imminent return to Lebanon". 'Start of a solution' France's intervention was the latest in a string of European efforts to defuse tensions over Lebanon, where divisions between Hariri's Sunni bloc and Shiite Hezbollah have long been a focal point in a broader struggle between Riyadh and Tehran. Paris, which held mandate power over Lebanon for the first half of the 20th century, plans to bring together international support for Lebanon, depending on how the situation develops. However, Macron told reporters Friday that France wanted "dialogue" with Iran and aimed to "build peace… not to choose one side over another". Ahead of Hariri's departure, Aoun -- an ally of Hezbollah -- welcomed the trip to Paris, expressing hope that it was the "start of a solution". "If Mr Hariri speaks from France, I would consider that he speaks freely," Aoun said. "But his resignation must be presented in Lebanon, and he will have to remain there until the formation of the new government."

The roads and residential accommodation of many places such as Koramangala, HSR Layout, Shantinagar, Wilson Garden, KR Puram, Anugraha Layout, Ulsoor, Vivek Nagar, Murugesh Palya on Old Airport Road and Gurappana Palya on Bannerghatta Road are&nbsp;submerged in knee-deep water.&nbsp;

Koramangala was the area worst-affected after the heavy rains.The government did not take any action to improve the flood-prone area even after the devastating floods in July 2016.&nbsp;

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials have swung into action&nbsp;but&nbsp;residents are still claiming&nbsp;a lack of response from civic officials. Reports quoted one of the residents as saying&nbsp;that the officials took over four hours to reach after they were called.

Flooding in the city also disrupted Independence day celebrations at the Parade Ground. BBMP officials had to lay dry sand on the ground before conducting any event.&nbsp;

The havoc created by the floods on&nbsp;Independence day is a&nbsp;replica of what the city experienced in July last year.

However, civic officials deny&nbsp;that the present floods are at par with the July 2016 floods which had caused lakes to overflow. This is not the case now.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat today unfurled the national flag at a school here defying a district administration order that only elected representatives, school authorities or government officials could hoist the tricolour at the government-aided institution. 
 
Palakaad District Collector P Marykutty issued an order late last night stating that since Karnagi Amman school is government-aided, only elected representatives or school authorities could hoist the flag as per protocol, police said. 
 
However, the RSS chief arrived at the school and unfurled the tricolour, they said. 
 
The DC said the administration will take action in the matter. &quot;We will give instruction to the police to register a case,&quot; she said. 
 
Bhagwat is in the state to take part in a two-day meeting of the RSS which began here yesterday. The state has witnessed political violence involving activists from the ruling CPI(M) and the RSS. 
 
Addressing the students, Bhagwat said, &quot;It is our duty to remember the sacrifices and hard efforts of those who laid down their lives during the struggle for Independence. We have to bring that dedication to our lives.&quot; 
 
&quot;Our independence is very sacred thing for us. We have to protect it,&quot; he added. 
 
Bhagwat pointed out that India did not get Independence in a day and that it was not the decision of the foreign government to do so.

Wing Commander Ravinder Ahlawat has been awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) Award for his outstanding execution of an emergency situation last year.

&nbsp;On 26 July 2016, Wing Commander Ravinder Ahlawat, captain of the aircraft carried a &#39;Range Instructional Technique&#39;&nbsp;(RIT) sortie over Pokhram Range in the Mirage 2000 trainer aircraft. He was in the front cockpit. While carrying out the &quot;Pull Up Attack&quot; circuit at 500 feet above ground level, the aircraft was hit by a bird.&nbsp;

The bird-hit was so severe that it smashed the canopy perspex completely damaging the Wing Commander&#39;s helmet. The accident broke the visor of his helmet and the injuries reached his face, neck, arms, and chest. The accident resulted in severe blood flow. Ahlawat lost his consciousness and was unable to fly the aircraft.

The injuries had reduced his vision in&nbsp;the left eye. With overflowing&nbsp;blood and bird remains all around his face, he tried to his utmost to keep the aircraft away from a&nbsp;nearby village.&nbsp;

Ravinder Ahlawat had to take emergency measures quickly as the aircraft was flying at a low level.

The damaged perspex prevented the rear pilot from getting&nbsp;a proper view of the runway. However, Commander Ravinder Ahlawat displayed incredible courage and presence of mind while&nbsp;manoeuvring the plane. He successfully executed a safe landing on the nearest runway of an air base exhibiting &quot;Service before self&quot; motto of the Indian Air Force.

The crippling injuries and the limited vision did not restrict him from saving innumerable precious&nbsp;lives on the ground.
