<p>The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday instructed Pakistan cricketers to stop wearing smart watches while playing. &nbsp</p>

<p>The issue came to light when Asad Shafiz and Babar Azam were seen wearing smart watches during the opening day's play of the first Test against England at Lord's on Thursday.&nbsp</p>

<p>As per reports, there was no suggestion of wrongdoing, but the council instructed the Pakistan team against wearing such watches as an anti-corruption measure.&nbsp</p>

<p>Pakistan ended the first day of this two-match series well-placed at 50 for one after bowling England out for just 184.</p>

<p>"I didn't know earlier that anyone was wearing one (a smart watch)," Pakistan's Hasan Ali, said after the end of Day 1.&nbsp</p>

<p>"But yes, an ICC anti-corruption officer came to us and told us this is not allowed. So next time nobody will wear them," he added.</p>

<p>In a bid to combat financial malpractice in cricket, players and match officials must hand over their mobile phones and other devices capable of electronic transmission before play to the appointed ICC anti-corruption officer present at every major international match.</p>

<p>The devices are returned after stumps.</p>

<p>Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a show cause notice to Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, seeking an explanation over his remarks on ICC in the next seven days' time.&nbsp</p>

<p>He has also been barred from speaking to the media.</p>

<p>The notice comes days after the 37-year-old raised concern over ICC's process of dealing with suspect bowling actions.&nbsp</p>

<p>Hafeez, who has been called thrice for flexing his elbow more than the permissible 15 degree, was only recently allowed to resume bowling on May 1, after the latest case of him being reported during the game against Sri Lanka in 2017 had him suspended.&nbsp</p>

<p>However, the all-rounder underwent a reassessment on April 17 at the Loughborough University and the results of the evaluation indicated that the elbow extension was within the permissible 15-degree limit.</p>

<p>While speaking media, the all-rounder had made suggestions that the officials were perhaps a little lenient regarding bowlers from certain countries.&nbsp</p>

<p>"There are so many things influencing all this - it has a lot to do with the power of [some] boards and nobody wants to take them on. Mostly there are soft corners and relations between people which no one wants to spoil. What I say is why not implement the rule and get every bowler in the world to go through [testing]. What's the difficulty in that?"</p>

<p>The all-rounder also questioned how on-field umpires called actions that had the minutest of bends beyond the stipulated 15 degrees but not the ones which fell out of bounds massively.&nbsp</p>

<p>"When match umpires called me, I went for my test only to find the flex was recorded up to 16, 17 and 18 degrees. I was surprised: how can anyone with the naked eye see flex from 15 to 16, when at times they are not able to call those whose flex is 25 and even 30-plus? So I have my doubts about this calling system. This is suspicious: why are match referees or on-field umpires not able to see those flexing up to 35 but me with 16 degrees?"</p>

<p>The Pakistan board did not take not of Hafeez's comments but acted only when ICC highlighted it.&nbsp</p>

<p>Dhoni took just six months to vindicate my friend when under his captaincy India won T-20 World Cup in September 2007. The same Ranchi crowd who pelted his house six months back after the World Cup debacle was garlanding him.</p>

<p>In next six years, Dhoni achieved everything which he could have dreamt – ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and top ICC Test ranking.</p>

<p>Now, let's switch over the discussion to the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League. After half the tournament is over, what are the key takeaways?</p>

<p>Of late during the past couple of years, fraternity started believing that Dhoni magic was waning. His finishing touch had lost and he was taking so many balls to get off the block. This is typical Dhoni's template.</p>

<p>He would cautiously take the innings to the end and then he would provide the massive final blow to seal things. In recent months though, this style of Dhoni failed at few occasions and fans were frowning.</p>

<p>But this IPL, it is a rejuvenated Dhoni. The typical Mahi mojo is back, with a bang. He is finishing the match for his side and the main difference is that he has seemed to have regained the knack of getting off the block without wasting many deliveries.</p>

<p>Dave Richardson, chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has asked an internal panel to suggest some harsh punishments to the players for misbehaving and cheating on the field.</p>

<p>In a recent media interaction, Richardson said that the punishment for misbehaviour and cheating were inadequate and the rules to check the code and conduct of players must get strengthen.</p>

<p>Richardson indicated the recent ball-tampering saga which was revealed last month when Australia men's cricket team was touring South Africa and were defeated by the hosts in the Test series</p>

<p>During the third Test at Cape Town, Cameron Bancroft was found guilty of altering the condition of the ball by using sandpaper in order to ‘reverse swing’ the ball.</p>

<p>The incident was caught in various cameras on the ground. Bancroft and Smith accepted that they were involved in the ball tampering mess and eventually punishments followed and with it came the tears- live on TV.</p>

<p>ICC had given one day ban to former Australian captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft for their involvements in the ball-tampering scandal.</p>

<p>On the other hand, 12 months bans were handed out to Smith and Warner and also a 9-month ban was handed out to the main culprit Cameron Bancroft.</p>

<p>ICC's Cricket Committee, chaired by former India captain Anil Kumble, will review the current ICC code of conduct and recommend suitable punishments for rogue behaviour.</p>

<p>Borrowing soccer's red and yellow cards and handing out instant punishment would be considered, though Richardson was sceptical about the idea of using cards. He further said that currently, under the existing laws the, however, the umpire has the authority to mark a penalty for 5 runs on the team breaking the rules.</p>

<p>Richardson said it could prove a major step towards cricket's Olympic inclusion at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.</p>

<p>Second, after a dismal show in first few games for Punjab, Yuvraj Singh ultimately lost place in the playing eleven.</p>

<p>Both of these events are significant in a sense that they indicate that curtain is coming down on the career of two of the most prolific T-20 and ODI batsmen the country has produced over the past two decades. Time takes its toll it is inevitable and same thing is happening with these two. Yuvraj made his international debut 18 years back and Gambhir around 15 years back.</p>

<p>These two gave Indian Cricket and it's fan precious reasons to rejoice. Everyone talks about the Dhoni’s shrewd captaincy, Joginder’s last over in T-20 final in 2007 and Dhoni’s valiant 91 and that memorable six over long on to seal the 2011 World Cup for India.</p>

<p>But make no mistake, Yuvraj and Gambhir played the all-important pivotal role in both 2007 & 2011.</p>

<p>In 2007, Yuvraj was like a hurricane. His six 6s in a single over of Stuart Broad is now an epic, once in a lifetime kind of phenomenon. Yuvraj ultimately stole the show from mighty Australians in the semi-final.</p>

<p>His knock of 70 off just 38 runs was decisive and made all the difference. Gambhir on other hand played a key role very subtly in 2007 T-20 World Cup.</p>

<p>He scored two half-centuries at the group stage and then in the final he was the highest scorer for India with a knock of 75 runs. How important that knock was, can be judged by the fact that second highest knock during the innings was 30.</p>

<p>In 2011 World Cup final, Gambhir was again the highest scorer with a knock of 97. As Sehwag and Tendulkar failed at the top of the order, it was Gambhir who anchored one end gave Dhoni a perfect platform to finish the match.</p>

<p>Yuvraj on other hand was brilliant right from the start in 2011 World Cup. He dominated the proceedings both with bat and ball and was adjourned as the player of the tournament.</p>

<p>It is heartbreaking to see the downfall of these two superstars. Apart from above, Yuvraj has been one the most destructive and alluring batsman, India has produced. He was the prominent member of U-19 World Cup winning Indian team in 1999 and scored a whirlwind 84 against Australia in 2000 during his ODI debut.</p>

<p>For Yuvraj, downfall started soon after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. In fact, it was after the final of T-20 World Cup in 2014, it became apparent that Yuvraj would never be the same player again. His 11 off 21 balls virtually costed India match.</p>

<p>In his generation, Gambhir has been one of the finest players against spin bowling. Unlike Yuvraj, Gambhir had a reasonable Test career as well. Though Gambhir's stint for India came to end by 2013 (he made a comeback though in 2016)</p>

Opinion: Yuvraj & Gambhir – End of road for two greats of the game

<p>The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced that all its 104 member nations - both men and women's team - will be granted T20I status.</p>

<p>The news was confirmed by ICC CEO David Richardson in a press conference in Kolkata.</p>

<p>The International Cricket Council is set to review its punishment for ball-tampering in light of the Australia cheating scandal, warning the game is in danger unless decisive action is taken.</p>

<p>Cricket Australia has banned Steve Smith and David Warner from international and domestic cricket for a year while opening batsman Cameron Bancroft was exiled for nine months over the incident during the third Test in South Africa.</p>

<p>Under its current code of conduct, the ICC was unable to impose more than a full-match fine and a one-Test ban on Smith under its current code of conduct, unlike the more stringent penalty since levied by Cricket Australia.</p>

<p>"We've come to realise that the world -- not only Australia -- regards ball-tampering in a very serious light. It goes to the spirit of the game," said chief executive David Richardson.</p>

<p>"I must admit this has been an eye-opener for me personally. We need to look at the penalty imposed, specific to ball-tampering.</p>

<p>"Around the world, ball-tampering is considered cheating... I think we need to look at it again, and this is what has prompted this review."</p>

<p>Richardson said a wide-ranging review, likely to be informed by respected former players such as Allan Border, Anil Kumble, Shaun Pollock and Courtney Walsh, would be an opportunity to "draw a line in the sand" and address fans' concerns about how the game is played.</p>

<p>"The reaction all around the world shows us that if we neglect the way the game is played, cricket is itself in danger," he said.</p>

<p>"We are going to ignore (that) at our peril... we don't want to leave this lingering, and hope it will all go away."</p>

<p>Richardson, a former South African wicketkeeper, said cricket had been blighted by bad behaviour in recent weeks including ugly incidents of sledging, abusive language and now the ball-tampering episode.</p>

<p>"With the full support of the board, we'll be undertaking quite a wide-ranging review into player conduct -- and in particular the spirit in which the game is played," he said.</p>

<p>"We hope this review will develop that universal culture of what it means to play the game in the correct manner.</p>

<p>"We want member countries, across the board, to be more accountable for the behaviour of their players -- take responsibility for it. That applies to all teams, not only Australia."</p>

ICC to review punishment for ball-tampering

<p>Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith on Monday criticised the punishment of one-match ban to former Australia skipper Steve Smith, describing the ICC’s punishment as too lenient.</p>

<p>“I think that they [ICC] had an opportunity to set a precedent here,” “I think it [Smith’s punishment] is too lenient," Graeme Smith said.&nbsp</p>

<p>“It’s something that he’s admitted and that he’s aware of and was a part of and that he planned to cheat. I felt the ICC had an opportunity and in my mind they haven’t dealt with it effectively.</p>

<p>Smith will miss the fourth and final Test against the Proteas after confessing that he was behind the ball-tampering scandal that has engulfed cricket.</p>

<p>Another player Cameron Bancroft, who received three demerit points and a 75 per cent fine of his match fee, was caught on camera rubbing the ball with yellow tape on day three of the third Test in Cape Town before Smith revealed the premeditated idea on Saturday.</p>

<p>“I know the ICC have stuck to the letter of their system but having captained before, the spirit of the game gets drummed down as a captain, and the ICC make a conscious effort before every series to make sure that as a leader you’re aware of that and it’s your responsibility."</p>

<p>Graeme stated that in many ways Cricket Australia have been firmer than the ICC.</p>

<p>Wicketkeeper Tim Paine was named captain on day four as the Australians were crushed by 322 runs on Sunday.</p>

<p>The new model will see Ireland and Afghanistan each receiving a percentage of the projected surplus, amounting under current projections to approximately USD 40m each over the course of the current eight-year commercial rights cycle.</p>

<p>Additionally, the ICC Board was provided with an update on the ongoing suspension of Nepal. Following an ICC delegation to Nepal in January, the ICC Board was informed that a general meeting will be held in Nepal in March to adopt an agreed and amended constitution by which the membership base will be determined.</p>

<p>This process is expected to be completed by March with a view to Nepal being readmitted to the membership at the ICC&#39;s Annual Conference in June.</p>

<p>Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza was fined 20 per cent of his match fees on Sunday for aggressive behaviour during his team&#39;s loss in the tri-nation one-day international tournament final against Sri Lanka.</p>

<p>Match referee David Boon fined Mashrafe after his on-field run-in with Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendis during Saturday&#39;s title clash in Dhaka.</p>

<p>The incident happened in the sixth over of the Sri Lankan innings when Mortaza ran close to Mendis after the batsman&#39;s dismissal, the International Cricket Council said.</p>

<p>He yelled loudly and looked directly at the opener &quot;in a manner that could have provoked an aggressive reaction,&quot; the ICC said.</p>

<p>The match referee also warned Sri Lankan cricketer Dhanuska Gunathilaka for a similar reaction in the sixth over of the Bangladesh innings following the dismissal of batsman Tamim Iqbal.</p>

Match referee David Boon fined Mashrafe after his on-field run-in with Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendis during Saturday's title clash in Dhaka. The incident happened in the sixth over of the Sri Lankan innings when Mortaza ran close to Mendis after the batsman's dismissal, the International Cricket Council said. He yelled loudly and looked directly at the opener "in a manner that could have provoked an aggressive reaction," the ICC said. The match referee also warned Sri Lankan cricketer Dhanuska Gunathilaka for a similar reaction in the sixth over of the Bangladesh innings following the dismissal of batsman Tamim Iqbal. While it was Gunathilaka's first offence, Mortaza has been sanctioned for the second time since the introduction of a revised code in September 2016, the ICC added. "Both the players admitted the offences," said the ICC. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will now play a two-Test series with the first match beginning in the port city of Chittagong on Wednesday. The second Test is in Dhaka starting on February 8. Sri Lanka will also play two Twenty20 internationals against the hosts.
