Saudi Arabia has shut down its critical East-West oil pipeline after it came under repeated drone attacks launched from Iraq. The pipeline, which normally pumps up to 7 million barrels a day to the Red Sea coast, was built decades ago specifically to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, but now even that backup route isn't safe. Riyadh says it won't retaliate for now, following a request from Iraq's PM, but has vowed to protect its 'sovereignty, security and critical facilities.'

The Houthis’ reportedly reached toward Perim Island which highlights the group’s growing strategic influence over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. The island sits between Yemen and Djibouti and overlooks a key route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Any Houthi presence or military activity around Perim could increase pressure on commercial shipping, raise security concerns for vessels transiting the Red Sea, and further complicate efforts to keep this vital trade corridor open.

Anthropic has reported that a Yemen-based guided weapons engineering cell used its Claude AI models to develop software for several weapons programmes, including a guided rocket and missile systems. The activity was detailed in Anthropic’s September 2026 threat-intelligence report, “Detecting and Countering Misuse of AI”. The company said the activity occurred between December 2025 and August 2026. Anthropic described the actors as a “Yemen-based guided weapons engineering cell” operating in northern Yemen. It did not explicitly identify the cell as the Houthis, but the reported activity took place in Houthi-controlled territory. The conflict is widening as tensions between Iran and the United States intensify around the Strait of Hormuz, while Yemen’s Houthi rebels escalate their confrontation with Saudi-backed forces.

Iran has launched fresh missile attacks targeting US-linked military positions, while Tehran claims to have struck American vessels and brought down a US drone. The confrontation is raising concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

Houthis vs Saudi Arabia: Structures at King Khalid air base damaged

In a major escalation, Saudi Arabia has vowed retaliation after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis launched a wave of attacks on Saudi Arabia, leaving more than 70 people injured and setting oil facilities ablaze.

Houthi forces fired 14 ballistic missiles along with drone attacks at government-held areas in Yemen's Taiz and Hodeidah provinces, targeting the western Red Sea coast. Yemeni forces say the drones were shot down using newly acquired air defences, while the ballistic missiles caused no impact on the ground. Ground clashes continue nearby. The Iran-backed group has yet to publicly respond to the reported outcome. Here's the latest on Yemen's escalating western-front conflict.

The Houthis are projecting a new form of sea power in the Red Sea, relying not on large warships but on missiles, drones and asymmetric tactics. Their attacks and threats against commercial vessels have disrupted shipping through one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, raising costs and forcing some vessels to reroute. The campaign has highlighted how non-state actors can challenge global trade routes using relatively low-cost technology, reshaping maritime security calculations across the Middle East.

Yemen's Houthi rebels are once again drawing global attention to the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints. The group has threatened to target vessels passing through the strategic waterway, raising fears of disruptions to global trade and energy supplies. The warning comes after Iran's move to shut the Strait of Hormuz during its conflict with the United States, prompting comparisons between the two critical routes.

Yemen's strategic Mokha port has suspended all commercial and maritime operations after being battered by more than 25 Houthi missiles in recent days, killing seven people and causing an estimated $16 million in damage. Mokha sits near the vital Bab al-Mandeb strait, a key global shipping chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The attacks come as Iran-backed Houthis escalate strikes on Yemen's government-held areas and Saudi Arabia amid the wider Iran conflict, with the Strait of Hormuz also effectively shut down, pushing more global shipping risk onto this already fragile route.

Iran is reportedly reshaping its regional network after suffering heavy losses across the Middle East. As Tehran looks to rebuild its influence, Iraqi militias and Yemen’s Houthis are emerging as key partners. The evolving 'Axis of Resistance' could reshape regional power dynamics, raising fresh questions over Iran’s strategy, its allies and the future of the Middle East conflict.

Saudi Arabia is reportedly taking extra precautions to protect its oil shipments as Houthi attacks in the Red Sea intensify. The latest attack on a cargo vessel reportedly killed six people, raising fresh concerns for commercial shipping. With vessels facing growing risks, Saudi oil exports through the Red Sea could come under increasing pressure.

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels are escalating their campaign against Saudi Arabia, targeting Saudi interests and threatening critical energy and maritime infrastructure.

The latest escalation comes after Saudi Arabia signed a new defence pact with Türkiye and Pakistan, raising questions over how the new alliance could respond to attacks from the Houthis. Reuters reported that a Houthi drone attack targeted Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery, with the fire subsequently extinguished and no casualties reported.

At least six people—including four crew members and two rescue workers—were killed in a ruthless "double-tap" missile strike by Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeting the Tanzania-flagged cargo ship Tihamah in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Iran backed Houthis hit vessel Tihamah, Yemeni coast guard team

The killing of two Pakistani nationals in a Houthi attack on a commercial vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has raised a major question: will Pakistan now be drawn directly into the widening Middle East conflict? At least three crew members were killed after a deck cargo ship was attacked in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, according to Yemeni coast guard sources and military officials cited by news agency Reuters. The victims reportedly included two Pakistani nationals and one Indonesian national. The Tanzania-flagged Tihamah was sailing from Salalah in Oman towards Djibouti when it came under attack. The Houthis have not yet claimed responsibility for the incident. The attack comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Pakistan. Just days ago, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed a landmark mutual defence agreement in Makkah under which an armed attack against one member is to be treated as an attack against all three. That agreement was signed as Saudi Arabia faces growing attacks from Iran-aligned forces, including the Houthis. A Houthi drone attack on a Saudi Aramco facility in Jazan was reported shortly after the pact was signed. The deaths of Pakistani crew members in the latest Red Sea attack could therefore put additional pressure on Islamabad to clarify how far it is prepared to go.
Will Pakistan join the war?
For now, the answer is not necessarily. The deaths of Pakistani citizens could increase domestic and diplomatic pressure on Islamabad, but they do not automatically mean Pakistan will enter the conflict militarily. The new Pakistan-Saudi-Turkiye agreement is designed as a collective defence arrangement, but its practical application will depend on the circumstances of an attack and the decisions taken by the three governments. Analysts have also described the pact as a deterrence mechanism rather than an unconditional guarantee of military intervention. The key question, therefore, is whether the attack on the Tihamah is treated as an attack that triggers Pakistan's obligations under the new pact. That distinction could become crucial. The ship was Tanzania-flagged, and the reported victims were Pakistani and Indonesian crew members. The incident therefore differs from a direct attack on Pakistani territory, military forces or a Pakistani-flagged vessel. Islamabad could condemn the deaths, demand an investigation and increase maritime security without immediately deploying combat forces.
Why the new tripartite pact matters
The timing of the attack has put the newly signed defence agreement under an early spotlight. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the agreement in Makkah on August 7, establishing a framework for collective defence. The pact has been compared with NATO-style mutual defence arrangements because an attack on one member is to be regarded as an attack on all. Saudi Arabia is currently the member facing the most immediate threat from the Houthis. The Iran-aligned Yemeni group has already declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia and has carried out attacks affecting Saudi interests. A Houthi strike on a Saudi Aramco facility was reported just days after the defence pact was signed. That means the pact could face its first major test in Yemen and the Red Sea. For Pakistan, however, there is a major difference between supporting Saudi Arabia's security and entering a broader war against the Houthis or Iran-aligned forces. Also Read: Bashar al-Assad sentenced to death in absentia: Fall of a dictator
The Pakistani connection makes the latest attack more sensitive
The presence of two Pakistani nationals among those killed changes the political optics of the attack. Pakistan has historically maintained close military and strategic relations with Saudi Arabia, while also seeking to avoid being pulled into conflicts involving regional powers. Islamabad has previously positioned itself as a potential mediator in Middle Eastern conflicts. Any decision to deploy forces could therefore represent a major shift in its regional policy. At the same time, the deaths of Pakistani citizens could make it increasingly difficult for the government to remain completely detached if attacks on commercial shipping continue. The question will be whether Islamabad responds through diplomatic channels, maritime security measures or direct military cooperation with Saudi Arabia.
Could Pakistan deploy its military?
A direct Pakistani military intervention remains far from certain. Pakistan could potentially strengthen maritime surveillance, provide intelligence, assist in protecting Saudi territory or participate in defensive operations without declaring war or launching offensive operations against the Houthis. A larger military deployment would carry considerably greater risks. Pakistan would have to weigh its relationship with Saudi Arabia against its broader regional interests, its relationship with Iran and the possibility of becoming directly involved in a conflict that could spread across the Red Sea and Gulf. The government would also have to consider domestic political reaction and the economic consequences of a prolonged military engagement.
Why Bab el-Mandeb matters?
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, known as ‘Gate of Tears’ because of its historically treacherous sailing conditions, is one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints. It connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and provides a crucial shipping route between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The strait has become even more significant as the Strait of Hormuz remains shut amid the wider regional conflict. The Houthis have repeatedly threatened to disrupt shipping through Bab el-Mandeb. Around 12% of global trade passes through the waterway, making any sustained disruption a major concern for international commerce. Kpler data showed that an average of 32 ships per day passed through Bab el-Mandeb last week, compared with around 50 vessels per day before the blockade, according to Reuters. The latest attack could therefore have consequences far beyond Yemen.
What happens if more Pakistani nationals are killed?
This could become the biggest test for Islamabad. If further attacks kill or injure Pakistani citizens, particularly if Pakistani-flagged ships or military personnel are targeted, pressure on the government to take a stronger position could rise sharply. A direct attack on Saudi Arabia would create another complication. Under the new Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiye defence framework, an attack on a member is to be treated as an attack on all three. But the pact's practical response would still depend on political consultations and the nature of the attack. This leaves Pakistan with several possible responses, from diplomatic condemnation and intelligence cooperation to defensive military assistance. A full-scale entry into the war would be the most consequential option and, at present, cannot be assumed from the deaths aboard the Tihamah alone.
Will Pakistan join the war now?
The short answer is: not necessarily — but the pressure on Islamabad is increasing. The deaths of two Pakistanis in the Bab el-Mandeb attack come at a highly sensitive moment, just days after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye created a new mutual defence framework. If the Houthis escalate their attacks against Saudi Arabia, target Pakistani assets or citizens again, or directly threaten the territory of a pact member, Pakistan could face a much more difficult decision. For now, Islamabad has room to respond diplomatically and defensively without becoming a direct combatant. But if the Red Sea crisis escalates and the new defence pact is formally invoked, the question of whether Pakistan will join the war could move from speculation to an immediate strategic decision.

Amid this, Pakistan is trying to get a foothold in this strategic region by signing a defence agreement with Somalia. The deal was signed during Somalian defence minister Ahmed Fiqi's visit to Pakistan, where he not only met his counterpart Khawaja Asif but also held separate meetings with the chiefs of the Pakistani army and navy. Now, let's look at what the agreement looks like. According to Somalia's defence ministry, it entails strengthening cooperation in security and military capability development. The MOU also focuses on exchange of military knowledge and training between both sides. Given the threat of terror outfit Al-Shabaab, the agreement's emphasis on fostering collaboration in counter-terrorism is also interesting. However, neither side has thrown clarity on whether military purchases are part of the deal. This assumes significance, as reports had earlier suggested that Somalia was in talks with Pakistan to purchase up to 24 JF-17 fighter jets in a defence deal worth around 900 million US Dollars. Additionally, no timeline has been specified as well. But, why is this deal garnering traction?

Somalia is a key player in maritime trade and shipping, as it is adjacent to the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab and Indian Ocean. Thus, even without military presence per se, an agreement could help Pakistan enhance its diplomatic prowess in wake of the ongoing Houthi threat. The timing of this MOU is also key. It comes days after Somalia and Pakistan joined a Saudi Arabia-led maritime defence alliance. This group of fourteen countries have come together to secure navigation around Bab al-Mandab, which caters to nearly 7% of global crude oil trade. The new military partnerships in the region come at a time when Houthis have intensified their attacks on vessels travelling to and from Saudi Arabian ports. A day earlier, it attacked a Saudi oil tanker with ballistic missiles. Earlier this week, an Indian-flagged commercial vessel sank in the Red Sea after coming under attack from this Iran-backed group. This also marks Pakistan's growing defence footprint in Africa. In December last year, Islamabad's ambitions came to the fore when it reached a deal worth four billion US Dollars to sell military equipment such as JF-17 fighter jets to the Libyan national army. However, it reportedly put a 1.5 billion US Dollar deal to supply weapons and jets to Sudan on hold after Saudi Arabia's intervention. Pakistan's latest move is also seen as a part of its larger bid to showcase its military prowess globally. Last year, it inked a strategic mutual defence agreement with Saudi Arabia. The two countries pledged that any attack on either nation would be treated as an act of aggression against both. Pakistani army chief Asim Munir has deployed thousands of troops, fighter jets and air defence systems to Saudi Arabia. In July, Kuwait ratified a defence agreement signed with Pakistan three years ago. As per reports, the pact established a framework for cooperation between Pakistani and Kuwaiti armed forces in areas such as training, intelligence sharing, logistics and military manufacturing. With Saudi Arabia reportedly planning a land operation against Houthis and strengthening of military ties on the other side, speculation is rife yet again as to whether Pakistan will intervene militarily in West Asia.

West Asia remains on edge as Iran launched a major retaliatory strike targeting a key U.S. military base in Kuwait after Washington paused fresh attacks. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims it targeted fighter jet shelters, satellite communications, and military infrastructure, while Kuwait says its air defenses intercepted the incoming drones.

The conflict is expanding across multiple fronts. Iran also claims to have intercepted oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, while the Iran-backed Houthis continue to threaten shipping in the Red Sea, prompting Saudi Arabia and regional allies to form a new maritime security coalition.
