Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said on Sunday (Dec 17) that France could play a "significant role" in avoiding a war in Lebanon as Israel has exchanged regular fire with Lebanese militants since its conflict with Hamas started on Oct 7. Addressing a press conference in Tel Aviv with his French counterpart Catherine Colonna, Foreign Minister Cohen said, "France could play a positive and significant role to prevent a war in Lebanon." French Foreign Minister Colonna, meanwhile, told reporters that Paris was deeply concerned over the situation in the Gaza Strip. "Too many civilians are being killed," Colonna said while stressing that victims of Hamas' Oct 7 attack should not be forgotten. She is due to meet families of French hostages still held in Gaza and to call for an immediate and durable new humanitarian truce. Israeli soldier killed in Lebanese border The Israeli army said on Saturday that a soldier was killed and two others were wounded by a hostile aircraft on the Lebanese border. "Sergeant Major (reservist) Yehezkel Azaria, from Petah Tikva... fell during an operational activity in the Margaliot area, aged 53 at the time of his death," a statement from the army said. A military spokesperson told the news agency AFP that the attack was the result of an incursion by the hostile aircraft. The army reported the incursion earlier in the day, saying that air defences "intercepted a hostile aircraft that crossed from Lebanon into Israel." "An additional hostile aircraft that crossed from Lebanon was identified and fell in Margaliot... In response, IDF artillery is striking in Lebanon," the army statement added. Israel: 'War against Hezbollah likely after defeat of Hamas'

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that if Lebanon's Hezbollah opened a second front in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, then he would bring devastation in southern Lebanon and turn Beirut into today's Gaza.

"If Hezbollah decides to open an all-out war, then with its own hands it will turn Beirut and southern Lebanon, which are not far from here, into Gaza and Khan Yunis," Netanyahu said.

The warning was issued by Netanyahu during his visit to the Israel Defense Force's (IDF) northern command's headquarters.

The northern command oversees units which have exchanged fire with Hezbollah along Israeli border with Lebanon in the weeks since the Hamas terror attack of October 7.

Praising the military reservists, Netanyahu said they have shown "great spirit in their readiness for battle."

Netanyahu's warning to Hezbollah was an indication of the widespread destruction unleashed by Israel's military in the northern Gaza Strip in response to the attack by Hamas, which has been recognised as a terrorist group by the US and the European Union.

Russia's mercenary group intends to provide an air defence system to Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah or to the regime in Tehran, as part of an "unprecedented defence cooperation" between the two US adversaries, the White House said on Tuesday (Nov 21).

"Our information... indicates that Wagner, at the direction of the Russian government, was preparing to provide an air defence capability to either Hezbollah or Iran," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

Earlier this month, US officials had said that Wagner was prepping up to supply the Pantsir-S1, a Russian self-propelled anti-aircraft gun and projectile system known as SA-22 by NATO, news agency AFP reported citing the Wall Street Journal.

"We are certainly prepared to use our counterterrorism sanctions authorities against Russian individuals or entities that might make these destabilizing transfers," Kirby said.

At least 21 Israelis, including 14 civilians, have been injured after Iranian-backed Lebanon-based militant group, Hezbollah launched anti-tank missiles from southern Lebanon, on Sunday (Nov 12), said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and medical officials. This comes amid concerns of another front opening in the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, as skirmishes along the Israel-Lebanon also steadily escalated since the beginning of the war on October 7.

In another attack also attributed to the Lebanon-based group, the IDF reported that seven soldiers were wounded by a mortar near the northern community of Menara.

At least 14 civilians were wounded, including one in serious condition, and the rest were lightly hurt, according to Israeli media reports citing medical officials. This comes after several vehicles near the northern Israeli community of Dovev were hit in the missile strike, the responsibility for which was later claimed by Hezbollah.

The victims included Israel Electric Corporation employees who were in the area to fix the power lines damaged by a previous strike from Lebanon. However, Hezbollah, while claiming responsibility for the attack, in its statement said it attacked soldiers installing surveillance equipment.

According to the IDF, some 15 rockets were fired from Lebanon at northern Israel out of which four were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system and others landed in open areas causing no injuries or damage.

In an update, an Israeli army spokesperson said that a fighter jet and other aircraft attacked several Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, including “a military compound containing a warehouse of weapons and military infrastructure”.

The clashes also took place a day after a televised speech by Hezbollah’s chief, Hassan Nasrallah who said that the group is using new weapons including attack drones “for the first time in the history of the resistance” in Lebanon.

Israel-Hamas war: At least 14 Israeli civilians injured in Hezbollah missile strikes from Lebanon

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Saturday (Nov 11) warned Lebanon's Hezbollah not to escalate the conflict along the border.

"Hezbollah is dragging Lebanon into a war that might happen," Gallant told troops in a video aired by Israeli television channels. "It is making mistakes and ... those who will pay the price are first and foremost Lebanon's citizens. What we are doing in Gaza we can do in Beirut."

Gallant's warning came after Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said that his group was deploying new types of weapons to hit targets in Israel further affirming that the front in the south against its foe would remain active.

Nasrallah said on Saturday there had been "an upgrade" in Hezbollah's operations along its front with Israel.

"There has been a quantitative improvement in the number of operations, the size and the number of targets, as well as an increase in the type of weapons," he said in a televised address.

Further elucidating on one of the weapons, Nasrallah said that this was the very first time the group deployed weaponised drones in the offensive.

"For the first time in the history of the resistance in Lebanon, we have used attack drones," he said.

‘What we are doing in Gaza we can do in Beirut,’ Israeli defence minister warns Hezbollah against escalation

A statement by Mossad, Israel's spy agency, has angered Brazil. While thanking Brazil police for the arrest of people connected with Hezbollah, Mossad said it helped Brazilian authorities foil an attack in Brazil. The unusual public statement has put a strain on Israel-Brazil ties.

Two people were arrested in Brazil on Wednesday (November 8) and slapped with terrorism charges. Later in the day, Mossad chose to make a public statement and said "given the backdrop of the war in Gaza," Hezbollah was planning attacks on targets across the world.

Though the Brazilian operation was indeed against a suspected Hezbollah cell, Mossad's public comments have angered Brazil.

Brazil's Justice Minister Flavio Dino on Thursday strongly rebuked Mossad. He said on social media that "Brazil is a sovereign country," and "no foreign force orders around the Brazilian Federal Police."

Although Dino did not appear to explicitly deny Israeli involvement, if there was any, he appeared angered due to the timing of Mossad's public statement and parallels drawn to the Israel-Hamas war.

"We appreciate appropriate international cooperation, but we reject any foreign authority that deems to direct Brazilian police bodies or use our investigations for the use of propaganda or its political interests," said Dino.

He added that Brazil's probe had "nothing to do with international conflicts".

A statement by Mossad, Israel's spy agency, has angered Brazil. The unusual public statement has put a strain on Israel-Brazil ties. Two people were arrested in Brazil on Wednesday (November 8) and slapped with terrorism charges. Mikati expressed concerns that Lebanon’s powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah organisation’s skirmishes near the border could renew tensions with Israel and might possibly lead to war.

Hezbollah dragging Lebanon into a war it will gain nothing from, lose a lot, warns Israeli army

The United States government has been urging Israel privately to not launch a military offensive against Lebanon's Hezbollah, in an effort to prevent the war from spreading beyond Gaza, The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday citing two officials.

As per the reports, the officials said that the United States recognises that Israel must retaliate against Hezbollah's increased targeting of its northern border since the surprise attack launched by the militant group Hamas on Oct 7 which claimed the lives of more than 1,400 Israelis.

However, the incessant attacks by Hezbollah and how Israeli intelligence failed to predict Hamas' assault have further led to discussions on whether Israel should initiate armed conflict against Hezbollah.

Such talks, as per the officials, have been a concern for the United States as Washington has been publicly and privately warning Hezbollah and Iran to not open a war on Israel's northern front.

The US has urged Israel to be cautious of its military responses to Hezbollah attacks as its response could result in a much larger war.

The officials said that the Biden administration has assured Tel Aviv that if Hezbollah initiates a war against Israel, the US military will join the Israeli Defense Forces in fighting the militant group.

However, following US President Joe Biden's brief solidarity visit to Israel, White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated that it “was never said” that the US would join in the event of a front with Hezbollah.

Kirby further added that there was “no intention to put US boots on the ground in combat” but that the US has its “national security interests” and “we’ll protect them if we need to.”

Hezbollah warns Israel it is 'fully prepared' to join Hamas

"We, as Hezbollah, are contributing to the confrontation and will (continue) to contribute to it within our vision and plan," Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem told a pro-Palestinian rally in Beirut's southern suburbs.

"We are fully prepared, and when the time comes for action, we will take it," he said.

The official's comments coincided with the Iranian foreign minister's visit to Beirut, rebuffing calls for Hezbollah to stay out of the war.

"The behind-the-scenes calls with us by great powers, Arab countries, envoys of the United Nations, directly and indirectly telling us not to interfere will have no effect," he said, adding, "Hezbollah knows its duties perfectly well."

US privately urging Israel to not launch offensive against Hezbollah: Report

Saudi Arabia has urged its citizens to leave Lebanon “immediately”, sparking fears of Hezbollah’s entry into a conflict primarily confined to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

It was also reported that the kingdom’s embassy in Beirut was shut down following concerning developments in southern Lebanon where at least 18 people were killed during an exchange of fire with Israeli troops.

Israeli military Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi Tuesday (Oct 17) warned that his nation would retaliate aggressively should Hezbollah escalate.

“If Hezbollah makes a mistake, it will be annihilated,” he declared while meeting Israeli troops stationed on the country’s border with Lebanon.

‘Day of rage’

After a strike at a Gazan hospital killed hundreds on Tuesday, Hezbollah called for a “day of rage” against Israel.

Following this, hundreds of protesters gathered in Beirut's southern suburbs on Wednesday to stage demonstrations.

This has sparked fears that a wider conflict could erupt should Iran-backed Hezbollah decide to enter the war. The Saudi embassy statement said citizens remaining in Lebanon should "exercise caution and stay away from places where gatherings or demonstrations are taking place".

Israel-Hamas war: France warns citizens against Lebanon travel, becomes latest Western nation to do so

At least one person was killed and three others were injured after Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah launched missiles at a northern Israeli border village on Sunday (Oct 15), said the Israeli medics. The Shiite militant group backed by Iran later confirmed its role in the anti-tank guided missile attacks which reportedly began in the morning.

Attacks in northern Israel

According to Israeli media, Hezbollah launched at least five anti-tank guided missiles at the northern town of Shtula, a farming community, which is opposite the Lebanese community of Ayta a-Shab.

The strike has since prompted the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) to respond with countermeasures against targets in Lebanon and declared a zone within four kilometres of the Lebanese border off-limits to public access saying that it is “isolating the area”.

“The IDF stresses that entering the area is strictly prohibited and asks the public to be vigilant and not enter the area,” said the Israeli army in a statement.

Subsequently, a third missile was fired at a group of Israeli troops operating on the Lebanon border, said the IDF. However, the Iran-backed group said that the third missile attack targeted an Israeli tank.

A fourth and fifth attack was also reported by the IDF which said that their military posts near Lebanon came under fire due to these anti-tank guided missiles.

At least one killed, three injured after Hezbollah attacks northern Israel; Israeli army 'isolates area'

Iran on Saturday (Oct 14) issued a fresh warning to Israel calling it to halt its offensives against Gaza before it is "too late".

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during his visit to the Lebanese capital Beirut, said that there was still a political opportunity to avert a widespread crisis in the region but "in the next few hours, it will be too late".

"There is still a political opportunity to prevent a widespread crisis in the region," Amir-Abdollahian told a press conference in Beirut after stops in Baghdad and Damascus.

But "maybe, in the next few hours, it will be too late," he said, warning that pro-Iran militants "have designed all the scenarios and are prepared, and their finger is on the trigger to shoot."

Although Tehran has voiced support for Hamas, Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denied his country's involvement in the unprecedented attacks launched by the militant group on Israel.

"The supporters of the Zionist regime (Israel) and some people in the usurping regime (a reference to USA) have been spreading rumours over the past two or three days, including that Islamic Iran was behind this action. They are wrong," Khamenei said.

"This destructive earthquake (Hamas' attack) has destroyed some critical structures (in Israel) which will not be repaired easily ... The Zionist regime's own actions are to blame for this disaster," he said.
