<p>Hawaii, on Thursday (Jun 20) agreed to a “groundbreaking” legal settlement with young climate activists who filed a lawsuit accusing the US state of violating the state constitution by operating a transportation system which harmed the climate and infringed upon their right to a clean and healthy environment which would officials to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions.</p>

<h2><strong>What is the lawsuit about?</strong></h2>

<p>The settlement reached in Navahine v Hawaii Department of Transportation recognises the children’s constitutional rights to a life-sustaining climate and would require the US state to take action to decarbonise its transportation system in the next 21 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lawsuit, by 13 young people aged between nine and 18, was filed in June 2022 and claimed that Hawaii’s pro-fossil fuel transportation policies violate their state constitutional rights.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The complaint accused the state of prioritising projects including highway expansion instead of those that cut carbon emissions like efforts to introduce electric vehicles and promote walking and cycling.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This, as per the lawsuit, has impacted the plaintiff’s ability to live “healthful lives in Hawaii now and into the future” and violated their right to a clean and healthy environment which is guaranteed by the state’s constitution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rising sea levels also threatened to put their lands underwater, the complaint said.</p>

<p>Notably, this was the first-ever youth-led climate case seeking zero emissions in transportation and the second-ever lawsuit in the United States filed by young people who claim their future and health are in jeopardy because of climate change and the state is violating their rights.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>A ‘groundbreaking’ settlement</strong></h2>

<p>Governor of Hawaii Josh Green, a Democrat, announced the “groundbreaking” settlement at a news conference.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We’re addressing the impacts of climate change today, and needless to say, this is a priority because we know now that climate change is here,” said Green. He added, “It is not something that we’re considering in an abstract way in the future.”</p>

<p>The settlement, which can be enforced in court, calls for the creation of a volunteer youth council to advise the state’s department of transport.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hawaii, as part of the settlement, will develop a roadmap to achieve zero emissions for its ground, sea, and inner island air transportation systems by 2045.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US state also plans to dedicate at least $40 million to expand its EV charging network by 2030 and ramp up efforts to improve Hawaii’s pedestrian, bicycle and public transit networks.</p>

<p>The state had sought dismissal of the case arguing that the zero emissions target and other state laws promoting reduced carbon emissions were “aspirational” and could not form the basis of the claim that the state is violating the young plaintiff’s rights.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Judge Jeffrey Crabtree in Honolulu rejected the argument in April last year saying that the laws required timely planning and action and that the state’s inaction has already harmed the plaintiffs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the world's most active volcanoes Kilauea started erupting in a remote area early on Monday (June 3), said the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The volcano had last erupted a half-century ago.</p>

<p>Six hours after the eruption, the observatory said that it did not pose much threat and minor or no ash emission was expected. After a few hours, it was reported that the eruption had "paused".</p>

<p>Hawaii residents have used the shaka hand gesture to convey several greetings including hello, goodbye, thank you and aloha.</p>

<p>The shaka, which involves extending the thumb and pinkie finger and curling the others down, is soon to become Hawaii’s official gesture.</p>

<p>Last week, the state lawmakers passed a bill that would recognise Hawaii as the shaka’s birthplace. While different groups in Hawaii interpret the shaka differently, the bill states that it has been used across the state for sharing aloha, fostering connection and being pono, or living rightly.</p>

<p>A primary sponsor of the bill, State Sen. Glenn Wakai (D), said the shaka embodies all the goodness that emanates from Hawaii.</p>

<p>“We’re not improving health care, we’re not getting better educational outcomes. But I do think that it’s important to capture what is special about Hawaii,” said Wakai.</p>

<p>Hawaii Governor Josh Green (D) backs the legislation, according to a statement from his office released on Saturday. He indicated that he is likely to sign it, provided there are no errors or concerns with the wording of the bill. If approved, the law would go into effect right away.</p>

<p>The inspiration for the bill came from Steve Sue, a Honolulu resident who created a documentary about the origins of the shaka gesture, as explained by State Senator Glenn Wakai. Sue started working on the documentary in 2019 and has since gathered various interpretations and stories surrounding the shaka's history.</p>

<p>While talking with Wakai in December, Sue expressed a desire to find a way for Hawaii to enshrine the gesture. “I realized that there’s a huge lurking asset here for the state that’s not really being protected,” Sue told The Washington Post.</p>

Later, while working as a train security guard, he'd wave his hand (with the missing fingers) to signal stowaways to get off the train. An ocean exploration team led by a former United States Air Force intelligence officer and pilot claims to have solved one of the biggest mysteries in modern aviation, the location of Amelia Earhart’s plane which vanished in 1937 over the Pacific. What did the team find? Last year, Tony Romeo, CEO of Deep Sea Vision embarked on an $11 million expedition which involved combing through the Pacific Ocean and using sonar technology. He may have found what might be the key to solving the decades-long mystery over the legendary pilot’s disappearance. The 16-person team from the company based in the US state of South Carolina released an image in December that it claims may show the wreckage of the aeroplane flown by Earhart. The image was taken after searching through more than 13,468 of the ocean floor between September and December last year. After Romeo’s team reviewed sonar data in December they found a startling image of what appears to be Earhart’s twin-engine Lockheed 10-E Electra. The latest business venture of social media tycoon Mark Zuckerberg – which involves raising “world-class” beef cattle by feeding them beer and nuts in his luxurious Hawaiian hideaway – was derided by the netizens as out of touch and environmentally hazardous. On Wednesday (Jan 10), the Meta CEO shared a picture of himself eating a steak, which was medium rare, with no sides, and was made using beef from his Ko’olau ranch, which is a 1,400-acre compound located on Kauai, the oldest island of Hawaii.

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg wants to create top quality beef

The Meta founder is reportedly building a massive $100 million compound in Hawaii, which includes an underground bunker and its own sources of food and energy. This secret project, dubbed Koolau Ranch, suggests that the social media tycoon is hiding his doomsday plans from the public.

<p>US cyber experts and government officials have warned that Chinese hackers have deeply infiltrated the country’s critical infrastructure, including water, power, communication and transport entities.</p>

<p>As per a report published in the Washington Post, these hackers are directly linked with China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA).</p>

<p>The aim of this expansive Chinese intrusion is clear: To limit the USA’s ability to play a larger role in Asian conflicts, especially in a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan and to cause chaos within the US and stir instability in the country.</p>

<h2><strong>Hawaii: A special target</strong></h2>

<p>The Post reported that a Hawaiian water utility was amongst the various entities targeted by the Chinese hackers.</p>

<p>Hawaii is where the US stations its troops and warships meant for patrolling the Indo-Pacific area. The island also serves as the headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific Command.</p>

<p>By interfering with Hawaii’s critical infrastructure, China likely wants to jeopardise the USA’s ability to intervene in a conflict involving Taiwan.</p>

<p>“This is stuff they pretty clearly see as relevant to a Taiwan scenario,” Joe McReynolds, a China security studies fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, was quoted as saying by The Post.</p>

<h2><strong>Dangerous designs</strong></h2>

<p>According to Chinese military officials, the PLA plans to coincide their cyber attacks on enemy targets with aerial strikes using the air force.</p>

<p>Hackers would target satellite networks, along with military logistics systems, of the enemy while airstrikes will reduce their military equipment to ashes.</p>

<p>“If Beijing feared that a major conflict with the United States was imminent, it almost certainly would consider undertaking aggressive cyber operations against US homeland critical infrastructure and military assets worldwide,” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was quoted as saying.</p>

<h2><strong>'Win a war without fighting'</strong></h2>

<p>The sophisticated cyber attack regime aims to provide China with the ability to win a war without even fighting it.</p>

US cyber experts and government officials have warned that Chinese hackers have deeply infiltrated the country’s critical infrastructure, including water, power, communication and transport entities.

US cyber experts and government officials have warned that Chinese hackers have deeply infiltrated the country’s critical infrastructure, including water, power, communication and transport entities. As per a report published in the Washington Post, these hackers are directly linked with China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA). The aim of this expansive Chinese intrusion is clear: To limit the USA’s ability to play a larger role in Asian conflicts, especially in a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan and to cause chaos within the US and stir instability in the country. Hawaii: A special target The Post reported that a Hawaiian water utility was amongst the various entities targeted by the Chinese hackers. Hawaii is where the US stations its troops and warships meant for patrolling the Indo-Pacific area. The island also serves as the headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific Command. By interfering with Hawaii’s critical infrastructure, China likely wants to jeopardise the USA’s ability to intervene in a conflict involving Taiwan. “This is stuff they pretty clearly see as relevant to a Taiwan scenario,” Joe McReynolds, a China security studies fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, was quoted as saying by The Post. Dangerous designs According to Chinese military officials, the PLA plans to coincide their cyber attacks on enemy targets with aerial strikes using the air force. Hackers would target satellite networks, along with military logistics systems, of the enemy while airstrikes will reduce their military equipment to ashes. Watch: Mandiant: Chinese hackers attack several government agencies × “If Beijing feared that a major conflict with the United States was imminent, it almost certainly would consider undertaking aggressive cyber operations against US homeland critical infrastructure and military assets worldwide,” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was quoted as saying. 'Win a war without fighting' The sophisticated cyber attack regime aims to provide China with the ability to win a war without even fighting it. “It is very clear that Chinese attempts to compromise critical infrastructure are in part to pre-position themselves to be able to disrupt or destroy that critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict," said Brandon Wales, executive director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. US President Joe Biden announces $ 95 million for Hawaii’s electric grid after Maui wildfires

Hundreds of people are still missing in the devastating wildfires in Maui island in the U.S. state of Hawaii, as 99 percent of burnt areas have been searched by rescuers. The wildfires, which started on Aug. 8 and have claimed the lives of at least 115 people, are the deadliest wildfires in the United States in more than a century, and the worst natural disaster in Hawaii's history. The number of death toll is expected to climb as time goes by.

Hurricane Hilary hurtled towards Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Sunday, blanketing the region with heavy rain amid warnings of catastrophic and life-threatening flooding on the peninsula and in the U.S. Southwest. One man died in the Baja California Sur state when a family of five was swept away into the sea while crossing a stream, according to a Mexican official, who also shared images of flooding and roads that were swept away in the area. In the United States, the hurricane disrupted flights and sports games before it arrived.

<p>“They would hit people’s roofs, and if it was an asphalt roof, it would catch on fire. And otherwise, they would fall off the roof and then ignite the foliage around the house.”</p>

The death toll has surpassed the Camp Fire wildfire in California which spread across Butte County in November 2018 and claimed the lives of 85 people. The deadliest wildfire in US history remains the October 1871 wildfire in Peshtigo, Wisconsin where over 1,500 were killed. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

'Robbed at gunpoint in Maui': Chaotic scenes after devastating wildfires in Hawaii

The confirmed number of deaths in the Maui wildfires has risen to 99, Gov. Josh Green said today. “In addition to that, the search goes on,” Green said. The previous number of confirmed deaths had been 96.

Hawaii wildfire: Death toll rises to 99 as crews continue search for missing victims

<p>The wildfires&nbsp;that ripped through the&nbsp;Hawaiian island of Maui have&nbsp;been ranked as the fifth-deadliest wildland fire in US history. The fires started on August 8 and have since killed at least 96 people while displacing thousands and causing damages - both ecological and financial.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Maui wildfire death toll has already surpassed the Camp Fire wildfire in California which spread across Butte County in November 2018 and claimed the lives of 85 people.</p>

<p>According to&nbsp;Governor Josh Green, it could take up to 10 days to get a full estimate of the death toll as the number of missing people currently stands at 1,300.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There is nothing to see except full devastation.&nbsp; It's hard to recognise anybody," said Green, warning that recovery crews are likely to find&nbsp;10 to 20 more victims per day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The deadliest wildfire in US history remains the October 1871 wildfire in Peshtigo, Wisconsin where over 1,500 were killed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The western community town of Lahaina is possibly the worst-affected area. The region, home to 12,000 people, wears a dystopic cover, with most residents having escaped or probably perished in the fire, informed authorities. As of last weekend, only three per cent of the town had been searched.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We've got an area that we have to contain that is at least five square miles, and it is full of our loved ones," said Maui Police Chief Jeff Pelletier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an attempt to help with the search efforts, Chief Pelletier has urged people with missing family members to submit DNA samples.&nbsp;</p>

Maui wildfire ranked fifth-deadliest in US history as death toll mounts to 96

<p>The Hawaiian island of Maui has been devastated by the wildfires, killing nearly 100 people while displacing thousands. While 1,300 remain missing, an iOS feature may have saved the life of an individual during the disaster.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the New York Post,&nbsp;a little-known feature called Apple Emergency SOS on the iPhone 14 may have been a lifesaver. Michael Miraflor, a marketing executive took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to claim that his relatives were caught in their vehicle while attempting to flee the Hawaiian island.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Five of&nbsp;Miraflor's loved ones were in the white van but could not contact anyone as the cell towers had been destroyed. With no option to contact emergency services or relatives, one of the family members used&nbsp;Apple's satellite system, available on&nbsp;all models of the iPhone 14 to save the day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Using the feature, the&nbsp;phones can connect directly to a satellite through a combination of custom-designed components and deeply integrated software.</p>

<p>"My brother’s girlfriend’s cousin and his family were caught in their vehicle in Maui while the wildfires suddenly erupted around them. No cell service, so Apple Emergency SOS was the only way they could get in contact with first responders. Literally saved their lives," Miraflor posted on X.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Miraflor shared screenshots of emergency SOS texts between the fire department and dispatchers, which pinpointed the family's location info. The communication showed that the family was rescued within 30 minutes of sending the first emergency text.&nbsp;</p>
