Hajj, Umrah, diplomatic, and residency visas remain unaffected by these restrictions. Saudi officials said some travellers enter on long-term visas and remain beyond their permitted stay to work or participate in Hajj without authorisation.
Hajj is an annual pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities of Islam in Saudi Arabia. The pilgrimage is performed during a particular period that culminates with Eid-ul-Adha. Saudi Arabia has temporarily stopped issuing certain types of visas for citizens of 14 countries, including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, just weeks before the annual Hajj pilgrimage begins.
The suspension, which affects Umrah, business and family visit visas, will stay in place until around mid-June, coinciding with the end of the Hajj season, which is scheduled for June 4&ndash;9 this year.
<h2>Who is affected?</h2>
Along with India, the visa pause also includes travellers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Nigeria, Jordan, Algeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Yemen, and Morocco.

According to Pakistani broadcaster ARY, Saudi officials said travellers holding Umrah visas can still enter the country up until 13 April. After that, the restrictions will apply fully.
<h2>Why the ban?</h2>
The Saudi authorities have stated that the move is aimed at preventing people from joining the Hajj without proper authorisation. In the past, many foreign nationals entered the country on Umrah or visit visas and stayed illegally to take part in the pilgrimage. This bypassed the kingdom&rsquo;s strict quota system, which regulates how many pilgrims each country is allowed to send.

Such unauthorised participation has contributed to overcrowding during Hajj, a serious issue, particularly in the intense summer heat. In 2024, at least 1,200 people were reported dead during the pilgrimage.
Officials also flagged concerns about foreigners using business or family visit visas to work illegally, which they say has caused disruptions in the local job market.
<h2>Not a diplomatic issue</h2>
The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has clarified that the decision is not linked to diplomatic tensions but is purely logistical, aimed at keeping the pilgrimage safe and organised.

Travellers from the affected countries have been asked to follow the new guidelines, with authorities warning that anyone who breaks the rules could be banned from entering Saudi Arabia for five years.
Diplomatic visas, residency permits, and official Hajj visas are not included in the ban. Those with approved documentation for Hajj 2025 will still be able to travel as planned.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a press briefing said that last year 187 people had died during the annual pilgrimage.

"This year, 1,75000 Indian pilgrims visited Mecca for Haj. The Haj period is from May 9 to July 22. This year, till now, 98 deaths have been reported," he said.

"The deaths have been due to natural causes, chronic illnesses, and old age. Six people died on the day of Arafat and four were accident-related deaths," Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing.

According to a Saudi study published last year, driven by climate change, temperatures in the area where rituals are performed were rising 0.4 degrees Celsius (0.72 degrees Fahrenheit) each decade.

Saudi officials, as per AFP, had advised pilgrims to use umbrellas, drink plenty of water and avoid exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day. "We have confirmed around 68 dead... Some are because of natural causes and we had many old-age pilgrims. And some are due to the weather conditions, that's what we assume," the diplomat told the agency on condition of anonymity.

The diplomat also mentioned that there are Indian pilgrims reported missing, but declined to specify the exact number, the agency report said.

"This happens every year... We can't say that it is abnormally high this year," the diplomat said adding,&nbsp;"It's somewhat similar to last year but we will know more in the coming days."&nbsp;

This brings the total death toll to 645 in this Hajj season.&nbsp;More than 200 pilgrims died last year.

More than 2,000 pilgrims were hit by heat stress during the pilgrimage as temperatures went up to 48℃.

The Hajj pilgrimage, one of Islam's Five Pillars, draws millions of Muslims annually to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

It is a profound religious obligation that every able-bodied Muslim is required to undertake at least once in their lifetime.
