Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the country's worst-ever rail disaster, in which 43 people died, was a result of "tragic human error".

The prime minister gave the statement after he visited the accident site where a freight train and a passenger train had a head-on collision on Tuesday night.

"Everything shows that the drama was, sadly, mainly due to a tragic human error," said PM Mitsotakis, in a televised address. He called the collision of trains “a horrific rail accident without precedent in our country,” and pledged to carry out a full, independent investigation.

PM Mitsotakis said that the government must provide aid to the injured and help in identifying the dead. “I can guarantee one thing: We will find out the causes of this tragedy, and we will do all that’s in our power so that something like this never happens again,” said Mitsotakis.

"Justice will do its job. People will be held accountable, while the state will be on the side of the people,” he added.

Transport minister resigns, stationmaster arrested

The stationmaster at the last stop of the train in Larissa was arrested by authorities and charged with manslaughter. The officials did not release the name of the man or the exact reason for his arrest, however, the stationmaster is being held responsible for rail traffic on the tracks in that particular stretch.

On Thursday, the stationmaster will appear before a prosecutor and explain how the passenger train received permission to run on the line on which a freight train was running from the other side.

However, the stationmaster has denied any wrongdoing and is blaming the tragic accident on a possible technical failure.

Meanwhile, Greek Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis submitted his resignation. Announcing his decision of stepping down from his position, the transport minister said, "When something so tragic happens, it is impossible to continue and pretend it didn't happen."

Protests and strikes

On Wednesday evening, people protested at the Thessaloniki train station and outside the offices of the railway's Italian operating company, Hellenic Train, in Athens where rocks were thrown by people at the police and building.

A silent vigil was held by demonstrators in Larissa and white roses were brought to make the word Tempe, which is the name of the valley where the accident took place.

A 24-hour strike was announced by the union representing train workers for Thursday, while left-wing groups' members protested in Athens. A 24-hour strike was also called by Athens metro workers who claimed that they faced similar problems as railway employees.

Rescue efforts continue

Cranes and other heavy machinery were used by emergency workers to move large pieces of the collided trains to take out more bodies and body parts.

“It’s unlikely there will be survivors, but hope dies last,” said rescuer Nikos Zygouris.

Larissa’s chief coroner, Roubini Leondari said that she has been handed over 43 bodies for examination and they would need DNA identification as most of them were largely disfigured. “Most (of the bodies) are young people. They are in very bad condition,” she said.

The rescuers present at the accident site said that they have not dealt with a disaster of this magnitude before. Many charred bodies could not be recognised and few passengers were identified through their body parts.

"I've never seen anything like this in my entire life," said a rescue worker. Many people are still missing, which includes two Cyprus nationals.

The police said that they have collected 17 biological samples from remains which will be matched with 23 relatives.

The agreements are "one more step towards the strategic goal of European (energy) autonomy," Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said after a meeting with visiting Bulgarian President Rumen Radev.

The president said that Greek companies would now be able to store natural gas in underground facility of Chiren while Bulgarian companies will have access to Greek terminal of Revithoussa.

"Both countries will have assured access to facilities that are critical to their energy security," Mitsotakis said.

He said the agreement "turns our two countries into crossroads for gas distribution not just from Greece to Bulgaria, but to the rest of Europe."

Both states have sped up projects to diversify away from dependence on Russian oil and gas.

Earlier in February, Bulgaria launched construction of a long-delayed gas pipeline link to neighbouring Serbia, while Greece has increased its capacity to store liquid natural gas.

Russia is a major supplier of natural gas to Europe. But ever since the Ukraine war broke out, Russia has been leveraging its position as major energy provider for political gains.

As one of the few Greek women in a high-profile European position, Kaili gained extensive support from local media, which ran prolonged profiles on her glamorous lifestyle.

Her career was an inspiration to all the women out there, especially in the field of politics, a field that is considered and has been dominated by men only. But she made a strong position here in this highly competitive field.

On Tuesday, a new report released by the European parliament painted&nbsp;a grim picture of the European Union democracy by detailing the increasing use of mercenary spyware, Pegasus. In the past 18 months, four EU countries —&nbsp;Hungary, Poland, Spain and Greece have been accused of using spyware or equivalent technology against their citizens.&nbsp;

Reports suggest that the software developed by the Israeli-based company NSO Group, Pegasus, and its less sophisticated version, Predator are some of the most well-known brands in Europe. Once this spyware infiltrates a device it can extract data and allow real-time surveillance, find passwords, track location and even activate its camera or microphone to gather information about its owner.&nbsp;

While the company claims that this software was designed to fight crime and terrorism, investigators have found that it is being used to snoop&nbsp;on journalists, activists, dissents as well as politicians across the world.&nbsp;

Speaking at a press conference, Dutch EU lawmaker Sophie in 't Veld presented the draft version of the report and said that in countries like Poland and Hungary the use of such spyware is an “integral element” of a system that is designed to “control and even oppress the citizens” which often include “critics of the government, opposition, journalists, whistleblowers.”

In some cases, the spyware also leads to illegitimate surveillance which is often based on vague justifications while the exemption of national security is repeatedly invoked in order to dodge accountability as well as maintain secrecy. In this context, the report says, the “rule of law turns into law of the ruler.”&nbsp;

The liberal lawmaker who acted as rapporteur said that her team was forced to rely on publicly available resources as the EU governments refused to cooperate, “The spyware scandal is not a series of isolated national cases of abuse, but a full-blown European affair,” said the report.

Furthermore, in addition to the four aforementioned countries, the report also puts Cyprus under suspicion for the use of spyware. While Poland and Hungary have witnessed at least over a dozen cases of journalists and political opponents being illegally targeted, Greece has also been caught amid an escalating espionage scandal.&nbsp;

According to a separate report by Politico, at least 33 people in Greece including the phones of journalists, business people and lawmakers of the conservative New Democracy government, their families as well as the politicians of the main opposition Syriza party, had traces of the illegal spyware Predator on their devices.&nbsp; 
 
Meanwhile, in Spain, the spyware was detected on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s phone and the devices of several other national ministers as well as Catalan lawmakers, lawyers and civil society organisations. Earlier this year, a number of Catalan lawmakers had alleged that Spain’s intelligence authorities had used Pegasus software to hack their phones.&nbsp;

The fallout of the Pegasus scandal also resulted in the ouster of Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles, earlier this year. Meanwhile, in Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was forced to issue an apology as well as announced the plans to ban the spyware technology amid mounting pressure.&nbsp;

She also claimed that all 27 EU countries have spyware at their disposal even if they refused to admit it. The report alleges that countries like Cyprus and Bulgaria have acted as export hubs for this spyware.&nbsp;

“Europe has been the hub for exports to dictatorships and oppressive regimes, such as Libya, Egypt and Bangladesh,” said the report. During the conference, 't Veld also acknowledged that these findings were largely based on the work of journalists and investigators and not confirmed by governments.&nbsp;

Pegasus spyware scandal becomes a ‘full-blown European Union affair’: Report

The Greek coast guard said on Tuesday (November 1) that it had launched two separate rescue operations to&nbsp;search for&nbsp;dozens of migrants who have gone missing. The boat migrants were using sank near Greek island of Evia in winds of over 60 kilometres per hour.

A coastguard spokeswoman said 68 people were missing.

"One of our high-seas patrol boats rescued nine men from an islet," she told AFP. "They said there were around 68 people on board."&nbsp;

Speaking to Skai Television, he claimed that many migrants told Frontex, the organisation in charge of monitoring EU borders, that "three Turkish army vehicles had transferred them" to the river, which serves as a natural boundary. The migrants were found with "visible injuries".

Ankara has vehemently refuted the accusations, instead blaming Athens for the "inhuman" situation, reported AFP.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday hailed a "new era" as a long-awaited pipeline began pumping gas, amid the EU's efforts to wean itself off Russian energy.

The Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB), a 182-kilometre (113-mile) trans-boundary pipeline was designed to help Bulgaria, which has for years been heavily dependent on Russian gas, obtain energy from other sources.

It officially opened in July, but did not start operations until Saturday.

"Today a new era for Bulgaria and southeast Europe begins," von der Leyen said during a ceremony in Sofia.

"Bulgaria used to receive 80 percent of its gas from Russia. That was before Russia decided to launch an atrocious war against Ukraine and an energy war against Europe," she said.

"This pipeline is a game changer. It's a game changer for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/bulgarian-coastguard-rescues-38-migrants-from-black-sea-518873">Bulgaria</a> and for Europe's energy security."&nbsp;

The IGB pipeline enables Bulgaria to link up, via Greece, to the TANAP/TAP pipeline designed to supply western Europe with gas from Azerbaijan's giant Shah Deniz gas field in the Caspian Sea.

Sofia is due to receive one billion cubic metres of gas through the pipeline.

"It means freedom from the dependency on Russian gas. Indeed, the interconnector could cover the entire gas consumption of Bulgaria. And this is really great news in very difficult times," von der Leyen said.

"But thanks to projects like this, Europe will have enough gas for the winter."

Linking Komotini in Greece to Stara Zagora in Bulgaria, the IGB pipeline was initially conceived in 2009 but construction did not begin until 2019.

It will also pipe gas from other sources, particularly from Algeria and Qatar via the existing LNG terminal in Revithousa, west of Athens and the planned terminal in Alexandroupolis, northeastern Greece.

Bulgaria ended deliveries from Russian giant Gazprom in April, weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The European Union, which relied heavily on Russian gas and oil before the war in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/break-through-die-or-surrender-ukraine-army-surrounds-russian-troops-in-key-town-of-lyman-521509">Ukraine</a>, has been scrambling to find alternative energy sources.&nbsp;

Speaking at a trade show in Thessaloniki, the Greek prime minister announced that he would raise the minimum wage and pensions for the first time since the start of the financial crisis more than ten years ago.

“(Moscow wants) to turn energy uncertainty into European political instability. I know that society is already afraid of a period where prices will affect our income. We have to prepare for a very hard winter, but we must also not allow the victimizer to impose its blackmail on the victim,” said Mitsotakis.

A total of 1.3 million homes will also be qualified for financial assistance with heating costs this winter, and those who choose oil or other fuels over gas or electricity will receive a benefit that is doubled.
