A nighttime trail race up a Greek mountain turned nightmarish on Sunday after lightning struck, killing one runner and injuring another. As per the Greek police, the incident happened during the Six Peaks race which is held on Mount Falakro in northern Greece.

The Six Peaks race covers the highest points of Mount Falakro and is a 35.7km long trek. As per reports, the race had started from the village of Pyrgoi which is situated 630m up the slopes of the mountain. It began at 7 pm on Saturday and the athletes were reportedly at an altitude of 1,340 meters when the lightning struck.

While a 55-year-old runner died on the spot, another aged 56 sustained injuries and had to be airlifted to a hospital. The injured runner is said to be in a serious condition and is battling for life. The rescue team arrived from a nearby town of Drama to help the running contingent only to find one had already succumbed. None of the two runners were identified.

The vessel foundered at dawn off the islands of Karpathos and Rhodes after setting sail on Tuesday from Antalya, southern Turkey, heading for Italy.

"According to the statements of 29 rescued people, there were 80 people on the boat, so up to 50 people are missing," a coastguard press office official told AFP.

But state television channel ERT said the number of people on board had been between 30 and 60.

Coastguard spokesman Nikos Kokalas told the channel: "It's not possible that the boat could have been transferring 80 migrants. We are talking about a lower number."

The rescue effort, ordered by merchant shipping minister Yannis Plakiotakis, according to a coastguard statement, included four vessels already sailing in the southern Aegean, two coastguard patrol boats and a Greek air force helicopter.

Strong winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour (30 mph) were hampering the operation, Kokalas told Skai radio.

"Many of those shipwrecked were not wearing life-jackets," Kokalas said.

A video posted by the coastguard showed an army helicopter rescuing two survivors from the sea and transferring them to Karpathos.

Another 27 people were transferred to land aboard a tanker that joined the search off the island of Kos, said the coastguard.

Dozens of deaths&nbsp;

Although the migrant boat appears to have been trying to get to Italy,&nbsp;Greece&nbsp;is often the country of choice for people fleeing Africa and the Middle East to try to reach a better life in the European Union.

Thousands come to&nbsp;Greece&nbsp;via Turkey over the narrow and perilous sea crossing separating the traditional enemies.

Sixty-four people have perished in the eastern Mediterranean since January, the International Organization for Migration says.

Eight people died off the Greek island of Mykonos on June 19 when 108 more were rescued, according to the UN migration body.

The Greek coastguard on Sunday said 122 migrants were rescued near Rhodes after their vessel ran into trouble after sailing from Turkey.

Up to 50 missing after migrant boat sinks off Greece

After learning that the head of the third-largest party in the country, the political rival of the Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had his phone tapped by the intelligence agency EYP, which directly reports to his office, he is currently facing his most difficult time in office.

“I never expected the Greek government to spy on me using the darkest practices,” the Pasok party head, Nikos Androulakis who is also a member of the European parliament, said in a televised address late on Friday as the extent of the espionage became apparent. “It is our democratic duty to protect the human rights and freedoms of Greek citizens. Today is a moment of truth for those whose arrogance and sense of impunity make them capable of anything.”

Only a few hours earlier, the Prime Minister's Maximou office had announced Panagiotis Kontoleon's resignation for "incorrect behaviour," resigning him from his position as the much-respected head of the EYP.

The news came after Mitsotakis's nephew and closest aide, Grigoris Dimitriadis, shocked everyone by announcing that he had also resigned, taking a bullet for his boss in an effort to put an end to the scandal. Dimitriadis had served as Kontoleon's point man in Maximou and was regarded as an eminence grise with broad-reaching abilities.

The resignations were seen as an admission of guilt by Sunday, when Mitsotakis said that the wiretapping had been a "big and inexcusable blunder." 
The socialist former prime minister Alexis Tsipras compared the spy scandal to Greece's very own Watergate, saying it "brutally insults our democracy," and he vowed to do everything in his power to expose the wrongdoing.

He asserted that the centre-right administration had a need to be transparent regarding both Androulakis, whose phone was allegedly monitored for three months before to his election as Pasok leader last September, and other allegedly targeted individuals.

“Instead of hypocritical apologies and lies, Mr Mitsotakis should say which other politicians and journalists have been followed,” said Tsipras, who heads the main opposition Syriza party. “This is not a huge and unforgivable mistake. It’s a huge scandal [that represents] the unforgivable arrogance of a regime, of a prime minister that thought no one could control him.”

The issue began when Androulakis stated he had been told by the European parliament of an effort to bug his mobile phone with Predator malware. This revelation has brought to mind the darkest days of military control, when opponents of the Colonels' regime of 1967–1974 were routinely spied on.

After using a cybersecurity tool provided by the Strasbourg-based parliament for parliamentarians to check their phones are not being illegally tracked, the MEP made the revelation. Predator is one of the most advanced spyware programmes currently on the market, with the ability to open encrypted messages and turn on mobile devices' cameras and microphones.

Androulakis detailed the attempted wiretapping in a complaint he submitted to prosecutors at the nation's supreme court last week.

Following charges of similar illegal surveillance by a government that has drawn harsh international criticism for limiting media freedom, two Greek journalists—one covering migration and the other finance—have also filed lawsuits.

According to MPs present at the closed-door committee meeting on July 29, Kontoleon, the spy head, acknowledged that the Greek intelligence service had tracked Thanassis Koukakis, the financial reporter, at the request of a foreign intelligence service.

At first, government representatives denied that the resignations were related to the Predator spyware allegations. However, sources later said that although the surveillance was legal and carried out using standard software, the prime minister was unaware of it and "would have stopped it." This was despite the fact that Androulakis's cellphone had been tapped at the request of foreign intelligence services.

The request was attributed by certain media outlets to the Pasok leader's contacts with "shady personnel acting on behalf of Chinese interests," according to Greek media over the weekend, which identified the foreign intelligence services as being Ukrainian and Armenian.

The administration's line of defence was instantly criticised as being a complex network of lies from a time when it was in its biggest crisis since taking office in July 2019.

The Greek parliament was urged by Androulakis on Friday to form an inquiry committee to look into possible political liabilities.

Mitsotakis has declared he will officially address the country on Monday. As one of his first acts as president, he controversially placed EYP under Maximou's supervision. He was quoted as saying in Sunday's To Vima, "I owe Nikos Androulakis an apology."

The Harvard-educated leader has garnered praise for his reform agenda and management style, which are more closely related to those in the US than those in the Mediterranean and are considered by some as a breath of fresh air following years of crippling economic instability in Greece. He has shown signs of savouring the challenge of many crises since inheriting the helm.

However, Mitsotakis, who is up for re-election in 2019 under a new electoral law that will make it nearly impossible for his New Democracy party to form a government - even if, as predicted, it comes first - has also come in for increasing criticism for a management style that doesn't allow for constructive criticism.

The MEP Giorgos Kyrtsos, who was booted from New Democracy earlier this year for publicly criticising the government and its treatment of the media, remarked, "Absolute power corrupts." 
In a system with limited checks and balances, Mitsotakis rules through Maximou rather than the cabinet. His attempt to exert authority has become out of hand. His genuine standing as a European liberal will come under scrutiny as a result of this massive situation involving spies.

To combat the raging fire, firefighters used one helicopter and nine firefighting planes. Acting on the recommendation of the fire department, West Lesbos mayor Taxiarchis Verros ordered the evacuation of the crowded beach resort, according to Athens News Agency.

The situation in the northeast was "much improved," according to fire brigade spokesman Yiannis Artopoios on Saturday afternoon, while the fire in Vatera was "exceptionally difficult."

However, since then, there has been a dramatic drop and only 92 mink farms operated in 2020. The numbers are expected to have dwindled rapidly in the last five months after the war broke out in February.

According to data received, fur garments are among Greece's top 10 exports to the world market. To Russia alone, the export figure amounted to 14 million euros last year. A year before that, it was around the 55 mn euros mark.&nbsp;

According to local reports, the aircraft, which was being operated by a Ukraine-based company, was carrying a 12-tonne cargo—described as potentially dangerous.

According to state media reports, the cargo plane was flying from Nis airport in Serbia to Jordan’s Amman. It sought clearance for an emergency landing at nearby Kavala airport, but did not manage to reach there.

On Sunday morning, drones were deployed to survey the wreckage site out of caution. State-run TV reported that army, explosives experts and Greek Atomic Energy Commission staff have decided not to approach the site until it was deemed safe.

People residing near the crash site have been advised to stay indoors and wear masks after a strong smell emanated from the crash site, according to local media reports.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital early on Sunday with breathing issues because of the toxic fumes.

Outgoing Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov told the inauguration ceremony in Komotini that "Over the coming weeks, the pipeline will be filled with Azeri gas and compensate for the discontinuation of Russian gas."

Hailing the pipeline as historic, Petkov highlighted that it will link Komotini to Stara Zagora in Bulgaria.

The trans-boundary pipeline, which is 182-kilometre (113-mile) long, is called the Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB).

Ukraine crisis: European countries open new pipeline to achieve energy independence

The Türkiye government’s tourism promotion campaign—TurkAegean— has stoked anger in Greece which has accused its NATO ally of culture appropriation.

At the root of this promotional campaign is the word ‘TurkAegean’ used by Türkiye. It is related to the territorial sovereignty over a group of islands spread on the Aegean Sea, which has been a contentious issue between Athens and Ankara.

The region sees a heavy influx of tourists during the summer season from around Europe. Aegean’s sandy beaches and azure waters have been the main tourist pullers.

With its western shores straddling the Aegean, Turkey wants the region not to be associated exclusively with Greece. Last December, it even lodged a request with the EU’s intellectual property office to trademark the term TurkAegean.

The application was made public after it got approval from the intellectual property office, triggering a backlash from top Greek politicians.

&nbsp;“Some people … quite simply, did not do their job well,” Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.

Greece’s European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas sent a strongly worded letter&nbsp;to Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton, demanding a review of the decision, according to Greek media reports on Thursday.

But Turkey has always viewed the Aegean region as part of its territory, even as it fought with Greece over claims to maritime boundaries and their continental shelves.

In November, Turkish Deputy Tourism Minister Nadir Alpaslan&nbsp;in an interview said that Greece “has made the world perceive the Aegean as its own region”, according to Politico.

“We will do this even more strongly next year and show that the Aegean is not a region of Greece, but also a region of Turkey, a tourism brand.”

However, the controversy surrounding claims to the Aegean Sea is linked to security concerns.

Ankara has accused Athens of deliberately militarising islands close to the Turkish coast in contravention of international treaties, reports The Guardian.

In a move that sparked further concerns among EU diplomats stationed in Athens, Turkey’s foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, warned last month that Turkey would challenge the status of Greece’s eastern isles if troops were not withdrawn.

Athens argues it has a right to defend itself on its own soil, noting repeated air incursions by Turkish fighter jets and Ankara’s longstanding threat of war in the event of territorial waters being extended.

Erdoğan has repeatedly invoked the Greek-Turkish war of 1919-22, which ended in military defeat for Athens, saying that, 100 years on, Greece should not be bristling for a fight that it would once again “regret”.

Greek politicians said that Ankara’s TurkAegean campaign must be seen in the context of the strategy the Turkish president was pursuing in the lead-up to elections in 2023.

But museum chairman George Osborne, Britain's former finance minister&nbsp;said in an interview Tuesday night that he believed there is a "deal to be done" to share the priceless artworks.

"In the British Museum they tell a story about civilisation compared to all the other civilisations, China, India, other parts of the Mediterranean," he told LBC radio.

"In Greece they only tell the story of Greek civilisation."

"I think there is a deal to be done where we can tell both stories, in Athens and in London, if we both approach this without a load of preconditions, without a load of red lines."

The Parthenon temple was built in the 5th century BCE on the Acropolis to honour Athena, the patron goddess of Athens.

In the early 1800s, workmen took friezes from the monument on the orders of the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Scottish nobleman Thomas Bruce, known as Lord Elgin.

Elgin sold the marbles to the British government, which in 1817 passed them on to the British Museum where they remain one of its most prized exhibits.

Athens insists the sculptures were stolen.

In an interview last year, Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson ruled out the return of the marbles, insisting they were legally acquired by Britain and legally owned by the British Museum's trustees since their acquisition.

Osborne noted that "I don't want to speak for all the trustees of the British Museum, we'd have to properly look at everything."

"Sensible people should come up with something so you can see them in their splendour in Athens, and you can see them alongside the splendours of other civilisations in London," he said.
