India to help Greece reclaim historical artefacts from UK, reports British media

Greece has taken a step to address this and make the world a more equitable place.&nbsp;

A system is being set up on Greek beaches that will allow wheelchair-bound people to access waters unassisted. It is a free service and has been indigenously developed in the country. At present, this Seatrac system has been installed on 150 beaches in the country. The system allows a wheelchair-bound person to lower the seat to the level of water while letting out a retractable path. The person can get to the water using the newly-built path. The path is guarded by railings.

Greek Tourism Ministry has said that the system will be installed on a total of 287 beaches across the country. &nbsp;The system will be made available in addition to essential facilities like bathroom/ changing facilities, ramps, corridors, refreshment bars and so on.

“Equal access to the sea is an inalienable human right,” said Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias, according to Greek Reporter.

The tourism ministry said that if diverse population can access the beaches, it will also give boost to the economy. If such measures are taken, even elderly people, in addition to those with disabilities will be able to enjoy the sun and sand. Such measures will also make it easy for people with temporary injuries and even pregnant women.

The tourism ministry reportedly has also developed a website dedicated to informing and educating people about latest developments.

The government has said that making beaches accessible to people with disabilities will let them enjoy water activities like swimming. This will be beneficial for mental and physical wellbeing of a person.

The car, in question, was carrying 10 migrants when&nbsp;it met with an accident with another vehicle that had a&nbsp;46-year-old driver, who was also killed, at the wheels.&nbsp;

According to the report, the car was carrying migrants whose nationalities were not immediately clear, and was travelling at a high speed on the wrong side of the road to avoid a police checkpoint when it slammed into a four-wheeler, whose driver was also killed, as per media reports. Meanwhile, the other five migrants and the driver were taken to the hospital after sustaining injuries, said the police.&nbsp;

Recently, Greece has witnessed a surge in the number of accidents similar to the one that took place on Saturday. This comes as the Greek authorities have ramped up patrols in the Aegean Sea which has reportedly made it more difficult for migrants to cross River Evros to reach the islands which has since led traffickers to take them&nbsp;by road.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, Greece said it prevented around 260,000 migrants from crossing its border with Turkey in 2022. At the time, Turkey had said that it adhered to international law, but if a migrant qualifies for refugee status they cannot be accused of having broken the law by crossing a border.&nbsp;

Athens does not have the best record when it comes to the issues relating to migrants, as many human rights organisations have accused Greek officials of illegal pushback and sending them back to Turkey. Athens has steadfastly denied these claims.&nbsp;

The fence, in question, is a five-metre high steel barrier, currently 38 kilometres long and Athens wants to extend it by 35 kilometres and add a total of 100 kilometres, in the next three years.&nbsp;

The Greek government said on Saturday (March 18) that it has sacked its national police chief, following days of clashes between security forces and demonstrators in the wake of the February 28 train tragedy that killed 57 people. According to the Prime Minister's office, police chief Constantinos Skoumas was sacked less than two months after being confirmed at the top post, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

"The appointment of a new police chief aims (to introduce) a more positive and efficient implementation of modern police operational plans on citizen safety, the office said.

No specific reason was given for this sacking, AFP reported. The development comes just two days after a riot police squad in Athens was filmed charging and striking peaceful protesters at the central Syntagma Square. Also, a police tow truck was filmed ramming a group of demonstrators trying to block an Athens street with garbage bins, sending one demonstrator flying to the ground.

On Thursday, thousands of workers walked off the job and rallied in central Athens at neglected safety standards they say led to the deadly train crash. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, flights to and from Greece were grounded, ships remained docked at ports, and public services and state schools were closed during the strike.

Apart from weeks of angry and occasionally violent protests, the February 28 tragedy has also piled pressure on the government ahead of the elections expected in May.&nbsp;

"We will learn from our mistakes," Mitsotakis said during a campaign stop in Athens on Saturday.&nbsp;

Following the disaster, the country's transport minister resigned. On the other hand, the stationmaster on duty during the accident and three other railway officials have been charged and face a possible life sentence.

Greece train tragedy protests: Police chief sacked following clashes between forces, demonstrators

Thousands of Greek workers walked off the job on Thursday and rallied in central Athens to protest neglected safety standards they say had led to the deadliest train crash in the country's history.

Flights to and from Greece were grounded, ships remained docked at ports, and public services and state schools were closed as workers joined the 24-hour strike called by Greece's largest labour unions, GSEE and ADEDY.

The walkout is the latest in a series of protests since the head-on collision last month of a passenger train carrying more than 350 people, most of them university students, with a freight train near the city of Larissa in the central Greek region of Tempi. The crash killed 57.

Protesters accuse the conservative government and the country's political system of ignoring repeated calls by unions over deficient safety measures.

"It was not human error, it was crime," read a banner held by protesters rallying outside parliament in Athens. "Our dead, your profits," read another one.

Clashes broke out when a group of protesters broke off the rally and hurled petrol bombs at police officers, who responded with teargas.

More than 25,000 people rallied in central Athens, according to police estimates, and protests were also held in other Greek cities.

Last week, tens of thousands rallied in the capital and other cities in the largest street demonstrations the government has faced since being elected in 2019.

DELAY, APOLOGY AND PROMISES TO FIX

The train crash has stirred up public outrage against consecutive governments over the last decade that has delayed a plan to install safety systems across the country's 2,500-km (1,550-mile) rail network.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whose term ends in July, has apologised over the crash, and promised to hire more staff and to fix the rail sector with support from the European Union.&nbsp;

A 93-year-old Greek grandmother, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for assisting refugees, passed away on Sunday (March 12), as reported by AFP.&nbsp;

In 2015, Emilia Kamvysi and two other elderly women shot to fame after they were seen bottle-feeding a refugee infant whose parents had just arrived on Lesbos, a Greek island, after a harrowing sea crossing.

More than a million refugees and migrants, many of them escaping the Syrian civil war, arrived at EU coastlines during the surge.

The funeral for Kamvysi will be held on Monday in her hamlet on Lesbos, according to the Greek national news agency ANA, which broke the news of her passing.

Another demonstrator, 26-year-old Alexandros, added: "We're getting desperate. You don't know what to say, what to do – all you can do is join the protest."

The rallies came in response to calls from various bodies, from trade unions to political groups, to take to the streets.&nbsp;

The biggest protests over the crash so far came on Wednesday when tens of thousands demonstrated nationwide, with clashes erupting, while workers staged strikes.&nbsp;

Workers in the public and private sectors are expected to walk out again Thursday.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is fighting to be re-elected within months, has faced calls from some protesters to quit.&nbsp;

He has come under fire for initially pointing to "human error" for the accident, and blaming the stationmaster on duty at the time who allegedly routed the trains onto the same stretch of track by accident.

He&nbsp;faces multiple charges of disrupting transport and putting lives at risk.

What happened at the protests?

A small group of protesters on Sunday threw petrol bombs at police who responded with tear gas and hand grenades to disperse the crowd, reported Reuters. The crash took place between passenger and freight trains near the city of Larissa on Tuesday which killed at least 57 people out of the 350 passengers on board.&nbsp;

The incident has since sparked outrage across Greece and led to multiple protests calling for better safety regulations for the country’s rail network. Additionally, candlelight marches were also held over the week in memory of the victims, many of whom were students returning from a weekend break. At least nine of those killed in the passenger train were students at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.&nbsp;

According to the police, around 12,000 people were present for the demonstration on Sunday. Demonstrators also released black balloons in the sky in memory of those who lost their lives due to the accident and some even carried signs like “Down with killer governments”. The family members and relatives of those killed were also expected to gather outside Larissa station for a memorial.&nbsp;

Railway workers denounce cost-cutting, under-investment in rail infra

Since the accident, railway workers who lost their colleagues have been staging rotating walkouts from Wednesday. This has paralysed the country’s train and metro services. The workers have denounced the government’s cost-cutting and under-investment in rail infrastructure.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the rail company Hellenic Train, which has become a focal point of public anger since the incident, released a statement late Saturday defending its actions. Hundreds of people also protested outside the company headquarters in Athens while a legal source told AFP that they are looking at the possibility of pressing charges against some of the senior members of Hellenic Train.

PM Mitsotakis issues an apology

The Greek PM took to Facebook on Sunday and wrote: “As prime minister, I owe everyone, but above all to the relatives of the victims, a big apology. Both personally, but also in the name of all those who have governed the country for years”. 
He added, “Indeed, it cannot be that in Greece in 2023, two trains can run on the same line in different directions and nobody notices.”&nbsp;

He said that if the remote system had been in place “it would have been, in practice, impossible for the accident to happen”. The Greek PM also announced that the country will seek inputs from European Commission and friendly countries&nbsp;on improving rail safety.
