Also Read - LIV begins to die: Players' future in limbo after Saudi PIF withdraws funding beyond 2026 Bourgeois and O'Neil spoke last Friday and agreed to postpone the tournament due to LIV's business model changes, with an official announcement expected on Tuesday. The Louisiana tournament remained on LIV Golf's website schedule for June on Monday evening. The Athletic reported the sides hoped to talk about a re-envisioned event this fall, although LIV's final event for the 2026 campaign is set for August. WDSU reported the state of Louisiana would postpone the event until LIV could find other funding sources and restructure. City Park, owned by the state of Louisiana, received $2 million in state funding for upgrades to host the event and the state also set aside $3 million as a hosting fee to lure the event with hopes for $70 million in economic impact for the area, the television station reported. The state would be refunded $1 million already paid to LIV and provide no additional money, WDSU reported. The Athletic said $1.2 million would be returned to the state with the renovation money treated as an acceptable improvement to a state asset. The move raises concerns about what could be the final months for LIV as O'Neil seeks money after this year's potential PIF funding stoppage. LIV arrived in 2022 and lured top PGA Tour talent with big contracts, Spain's Jon Rahm winning the past two season crowns. But the series has struggled for global attention and some players, such as Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed, have jumped back to the PGA Tour or are in the process of doing so. LIV Golf's next scheduled event is at Trump National Golf Club in suburban Washington on May 7-10. Other LIV stops are set for May in South Korea, June in Spain and July in England before the season closes with US stops in August at Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey, Indianapolis and the team championship in Michigan on August 27-30.

The PGA Tour is exploring pathways for players to return from LIV Golf, even as the embattled breakaway circuit scrambles to rebrand and retain its stars ahead of the rumored withdrawal of Saudi funding. The golfing world was shaken last week by widespread reports that LIV only has support from Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund guaranteed until the end of the season, after which the high-spending tour would face a major financial deficit if it continues. That has prompted speculation that the entire circuit could soon collapse, leaving marquee players like Bryson DeChambeau plotting their futures.Asked this week if the PGA tour had plans to welcome back defectors from rival LIV like DeChambeau, as it already has with five-time major winner Brooks Koepka, CEO Brian Rolapp said the PGA was "thinking about it.""Brooks came back onto the tour because he made a phone call and said, 'Look, I'm out of my contract. PGA Tour exploring way back for golfers amid LIV uncertainty

Seasoned campaigner Rahil Gangjee holed a massive 55-footer on the 18th hole to leap onto the front page of the scoreboard at the DP World India Championship at the Delhi Golf Club. That shot ensured there were at least two Indians in the Top-10 at the end of the first day at the $ 4 million golfing extravaganza. Gangjee with a 5-under 67 was Tied-fourth, as the 2019 Open winner Shane Lowry reeled off five birdies in a row on the back nine to post an opening 64 and lead by one shot after the first round. The game has been okay last week but before that, not so great. So I'm really, really glad that it turned out the way it did today. My caddie and I were just out there trying to have some fun. I've been a little too serious with the game in the past eight months. Last week and this week has been fun. I guess it's the way to play golf.”“I've played this place (DGC) a thousand times, so I'm not shocked the way I played. But having seen my results in the last eight months, I wasn't expecting it. Made some changes to my putting stroke, my putting grip. So I'm glad it's working out.”As for his eagle on the 18th, he said, “I hit a great drive on the 18th and was in between clubs on the second shot but decided to use an extra club to hit it past the flag because landing it short of the green would leave me with a difficult chip. Then standing on the 55-footer for eagle, I thought of a similar putt that I made for eagle a couple of years ago here at DGC, it was on the same line but a little closer to the hole. So it’s amazing what such thoughts can do.”Sandhu was delighted with his play, and said, “I'm really proud that I stayed disciplined off the tee. Literally had a hot putter from 15. I had a clean card otherwise and I was patient throughout the round. You've just got to be patient and it will pay you back.”“I just pulled out my driver on the 10th hole today. Wanted to pull out the driver on 18 but there was like a ten-minute delay. But still ended up making a good four. That's the whole plan, just to make good numbers on a decent hole and just be patient.”Sheoran was thrilled to be part of this star-studded field, and remarked, “It's something I have dreamt a lot of times, watching Rory, Tommy on TV and thinking one day that I want to be playing next to them. It's a dream come true in a way. I couldn't sleep at night thinking that I'm going to be playing alongside them, so it's really surreal to be playing here.”Playing alongside Europe's victorious Ryder Cup Captain Donald and his team-mate Fleetwood, Lowry opened his birdie account at the par-three fifth before getting another from close range on the sixth. The Irishman made four pars before getting his next birdie from 12 feet at the 11th hole. After sending his tee-shot at the short at 12th to ten feet and knocking in the putt, Lowry holed from similar range on the 13th for a hat-trick of birdies. He took advantage of the par-five 14th before rolling in from eight feet on the 15th to make it five in a row.Lowry then managed to get up and down from just shy of the 18th green for another birdie to take the outright lead.He said: "I putted nicely today. We all had a great time and we all played pretty good. I just rolled off a few more birdies than they did on the back nine."You know, 64 is a really nice score. It's not that hard when you hit it in play out there but when you start missing fairways it becomes quite tricky. I'm pretty happy with that."I feel like this type of golf course suits me. I spend half the year moaning about golf courses that are too wide, so when I get to somewhere like here, I need to take advantage of that, and I did that today and hopefully I can keep doing that for the rest of the week."

Golf: World no 1 Scheffler claims 16th career PGA Tour win, joins Tiger Woods in elite list

World number one Scottie Scheffler captured his 16th career PGA Tour victory on Sunday, joining Tiger Woods as the only players to defend titles at the Memorial tournament. The 28-year-old American took his third triumph in a month, firing a two-under par 70 to finish 72 holes on 10-under 278 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. Also read | Formula One: Oscar Piastri extends championship lead with Spanish Grand Prix victory American Ben Griffin, coming off a victory last week at Colonial, was four strokes back in second on 282 after shooting 73, with Austrian Sepp Straka third on 283, one stroke better than Canada's Nick Taylor. "It's always a hard week to play this tournament," Scheffler said. "I battled really hard over the weekend, and Ben made things interesting down the stretch." The triumph marked the ninth consecutive time Scheffler has turned a 54-hole lead into a victory, this one coming at the event hosted by 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus. "Overall, it was a great week and definitely proud to be shaking Mr. Nicklaus's hand at the end of another good week," Scheffler said. Scheffler won last month's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow for his third major crown after taking the CJ Cup Byron Nelson two weeks earlier. By winning his first 16 PGA titles in just under 3.5 years, Scheffler became the fourth-fastest to go from his first to 16th tour wins after Sam Snead, Nicklaus and Woods, a 15-time major winner who took the Memorial from 1999-2001. The victory marked the first defended title among the nine crowns Scheffler won worldwide last year, having edged compatriot Collin Morikawa by a stroke at the 2024 Memorial. It also ensured Scheffler will be seen as the man to beat in two weeks at the US Open at Oakmont, where Scheffler seeks a fourth career major victory and second in a row. "This is definitely a golf course that's going to expose your weaknesses," Scheffler said of Muirfield Village. "I've got a few things I can practice on next week. Overall, it was a really solid week, did some really good battling." Scheffler sank a par putt from just inside 10 feet at the 14th hole and reached 10-under with a tap-in birdie at the par-five 15th. Griffin, however, reached the 15th green in two and sank a 12-foot eagle putt to pull within three strokes with three holes to play. Griffin then followed with a 27-foot birdie putt at the par-three 16th to pull within two of the lead. Scheffler responded by dropping his approach at 17 just inside 20 feet on the way to a routine par while Griffin needed four shots to reach the 17th green on his way to a double bogey, falling four adrift. Scheffler closed out matters with a seven-foot birdie putt at 18. Scheffler solid early Scheffler, who began the day with a one-stroke lead, birdied the first six holes to keep his one-stroke lead while Griffin stayed on his heels by answering bogeys at the first and par-three fourth holes with birdies at the second and par-five fifth. Scheffler left his third shot at the par-five seventh within four feet of the hole and sank the birdie putt to reach nine-under. Scheffler curled in a par putt at the ninth from just inside nine feet to make the turn with a two-stroke lead, but missed a 12-footer for par at the 10th for a bogey that dropped his advantage to one shot once more. At the par-five 11th, Scheffler responded by blasting out of the rough to 14 feet and curling in the birdie putt to restore a two-stroke edge on nine-under. Griffin found a bunker on the way to a bogey at the par-three 12th and never found the fairway at 13 on the way to another bogey that left Scheffler ahead by four with five holes remaining. McIlroy, who had not won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship, fired a one-over par 73 in the final round to finish 72 holes on 11-under 277 alongside Rose, who shot a closing 66 with birdies on six of the last eight holes. Golf: Rory McIlroy completes career Grand Slam with tearful Masters win

Northern Ireland's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rory-mcilroy" rel="dofollow">Rory McIlroy</a> cruised to a St. Patrick's Day victory at the Players Championship on Monday, defeating J.J. Spaun in a playoff at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.<o:p></o:p>
The four-time major champion completed the three-hole shoot-out in one over par, while Spaun's challenge wilted after a disastrous triple-bogey on the second playoff hole.<o:p></o:p>
"This is the third time I've won on St. Patrick's Day, so it's been a good luck charm for me," McIlroy said after sealing the second Players Championship of his career and 28th PGA Tour title overall. "I was lucky enough to do enough to get it done, but unbelievably proud and happy to win my second Players ... It's really nice," McIlroy added.<o:p></o:p>
"I went home last night thinking 'I should have had this.' But I went home and reset, didn't have a great night's sleep, but was lucky enough to get it done."<o:p></o:p>
McIlroy had finished tied at the top of the leaderboard with Spaun following Sunday's storm-hit final round after failing to hold on to a three-shot lead with five holes to play.<o:p></o:p>
But after returning to the course on Monday in bright, breezy conditions, there was no sign of a repeat of the late stumble by McIlroy on Sunday that had allowed Spaun to force his way into the first playoff of his career.<o:p></o:p>
McIlroy struck first on the opening playoff hole, the par-five 16th, crushing a 336-yard drive straight down the fairway before reaching the green in two.<o:p></o:p>
Spaun meanwhile looked out of sorts from the get-go, finding the fairway rough off the tee before landing his second shot into the greenside bunker.<o:p></o:p>
McIlroy failed to make his 33-foot eagle putt but calmly rolled in an awkward five-footer for birdie.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>'More complete player'<o:p></o:p></h2>
Spaun, whose recovery out of the bunker left him with a long, unsuccessful birdie putt, could only par.<o:p></o:p>
After that early wobble, things got worse for Spaun at the par-three 17th island hole, with the American plunging his tee-shot into the water behind the green.<o:p></o:p>
Spaun then missed a long 10-foot putt for double bogey and eventually finished with a triple-bogey six.<o:p></o:p>
While McIlroy missed his birdie chance and a 10-footer to save par, his bogey four still left him three shots clear heading to the 18th.<o:p></o:p>
McIlroy's tee-shot on the last went well wide of the right fairway, but Spaun was unable to exert pressure, also going wide of the fairway.<o:p></o:p>
Both players reached the green in three and missed their par putts. McIlroy coolly tapped in for bogey to seal victory.<o:p></o:p>
McIlroy's win marked the second title of the season for the Northern Irishman as he build towards the Masters in Augusta next month -- the only major missing from his collection.<o:p></o:p>
McIlroy said his early season form was a reward for the hard work he has put in over the years.<o:p></o:p>
"I've worked really hard -- I feel like I'm a way more complete player than I was a few years ago," McIlroy told NBC. "I feel like I can play in all conditions and anything that comes my way. Really happy that I was able to get it done today."<o:p></o:p>
Spaun meanwhile was left reflecting on a disappointing outcome.<o:p></o:p>
"It's hard not to feel discouraged a little bit, but nothing but positives," Spaun said. "Putting myself in contention and giving myself a chance to win in a playoff -- if someone had told me that would happen at the start of the week I would totally have taken it.<o:p></o:p>
"Hopefully I can just learn from this and get it done next time."<o:p></o:p>

Golf: Rory McIlroy wins second Players Championship title in playoff

Australian legend Greg Norman believes India is a sleeping giant in golf and it would require more competitions in the country to help its players realise their true potential.
The 69-year-old former world number one, who has 88 professional titles under his belt, was hopeful of India's growth in the sport.
"One of my initial focus points was to invest into the sleeping giant, which was the Asian tour. India is a sleeping giant when it comes to Golf. I mean you just look what's happening in India with the game of golf, it has only just started, right?" Norman told select media on the sidelines of the Asian Tour event here on Sunday (Feb 3).
"For the next 25 years, which is a generation, India is right in the middle of them," he said.
Norman was the CEO of LIV, a breakaway league founded in 2022 and financed by Saudi Arabia.&nbsp; It has introduced some fresh rules like three-day 54-hole tournaments, instead of the traditional 72-hole four-day events. The LIV tournaments have also done away with the concept of weekend cut and all those who start to get to play the entire tournament besides being entitled to prize money.

The LIV events have also faced significant resistance from the existing PGA Tour (USA)and the European Tour, which claim that the parallel tour "disrupts" the sport by offering players higher prize money and a seemingly more relaxed rules structure.
Norman believes LIV can have a great role in helping Indian golf, which was on a high when the likes of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jeev-milkha-singh">Jeev Milkha Singh</a>, Shiv Kapur, SSP Chawrasia, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jyoti-randhawa">Jyoti Randhawa</a> and Arjun Atwal regularly won tournaments on all three tours till about a decade back.
However, the momentum has been somewhat lost in the past five years.
"I love LIV to come to India because to me, it's significant, right? Everything takes baby steps. And obviously, the international place to enter the league is important to do that," he pointed out.
"LIV created a new dynamic for the game of golf because it gave an opportunity in the competitive golfing world for a new business model...Different formats have come out and enticed millions and millions of people to come into the game of golf," he asserted.
"I truly believe LIV will be the true global golf platform for golf. We want to be in all the continents of the world...We bring a product that's a plug-and-play that's never been done before. We bring franchise models. We're bringing the youth side of it," he explained.
Norman lauds <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/anirban-lahiri">Anirban Lahiri</a>--Lahiri has joined ranks with LIV along with some other prominent names like Bryson DeChambeau, two-time Major winner Dustin Johnson, and Lee Westwood, a former world number one.
"He's not just a great golfer, but he's a great person. He's a great spokesperson. He's a great representative of your country. So, all those ingredients allowed me to go, let's go do it," Norman said of the Indian, who has seven Asian and two European titles to his credit.
The Australian great was also full of praise for 15-year-old rising Indian golfer Kartik Singh, who cut the International Series here.
"He's captured it. He cut. I think it's pretty impressive. I haven't seen his swing at golf club...I look forward to seeing his swing at golf club."

'India is a sleeping giant in...', says ex Australian professional golfer Greg Norman

Rory McIlroy will need a spectacular weekend to win a third straight Dubai Desert Classic title after slipping nine shots behind halfway leader Ewen Ferguson on Friday, while Jon Rahm missed the cut.
Four-time champion McIlroy mixed three birdies with two bogeys to card a one-under-par second round of 71 and sit on three-under for the tournament.
The world number three is playing his first event since winning the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai last November.
"A little frustrated. But I thought the conditions were a little tricky," he said.
"Get out there early tomorrow and try to post a score and get myself up the leaderboard and give myself a chance for Sunday."
McIlroy, who started the tournament with a two-under 70, bounced back from an opening bogey with a birdie on the second hole but missed several chances.
A five-foot birdie putt slid by on the short par-four 17th, but McIlroy made a birdie on the final green.
"The greens will continue to get a little bit firmer, and will put such a premium on putting it in the fairway and hitting a lot of greens," added McIlroy.
Scotsman Ferguson snatched a one-shot lead over Daniel Hillier with an eye-catching finish.
He followed a birdie on the penultimate hole with a stunning approach shot on the 18th to set up a closing eagle.
Ferguson leads on 12-under overall after signing for a seven-under 65.
World number 223 Hillier also made a brilliant eagle on the par-five last hole, finishing off a bogey-free 65.
The New Zealander will head into the weekend chasing just his second title on the European Tour, after his 2023 British Masters victory.

<h2>Rahm struggles</h2>
Rahm opened with a three-under first round but paid for a terrible start to his second day to miss out on the weekend.
The two-time major champion, starting on the back nine, made double-bogeys on both the 12th and 18th holes and eventually carded a five-over-par 77 to finish two shots below the cut line.
"Not the way you want to start the year, but if there's any positive side of it, it is the beginning of the year," said LIV star Rahm, who is hoping to play well enough on the European Tour to automatically qualify for Luke Donald's Ryder Cup team later this year.
"There's a lot of golf and a lot of months to look forward to.
"I have a pretty clear idea of what I need to work on."
Viktor Hovland, who showed signs of form late last year after a difficult season, also missed the cut after adding a 73 to his disappointing 75 on Thursday.
His 2023 European Ryder Cup-winning teammates Tommy Fleetwood and Robert MacIntyre remain in the chasing pack, on four-under and five-under overall respectively.
Tyrrell Hatton, who plays alongside Rahm in LIV Golf, is only four strokes off the top of the leaderboard in a tie for third place after firing 65.

Dubai Open: Rory McIlroy nine shots off pace, Jon Rahm misses cut

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy unveil their futuristic Tomorrow's Golf League on Tuesday, hoping the tech-infused competition will capture the imagination of tour pros and a new global fan base.
"This is what we've been shooting for," 15-time major champion Woods said last month as he looked forward to the competition debut, which was delayed by a year after a roof collapse at the SoFi Center venue in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

"We're trying to bring a new demographic to this game of golf, and it's going to be exciting," Woods said, adding he was "blown away at the amount of moving parts there is to this.
"As a showcase, it's going to be unbelievable on TV," Woods said. "I hope that we can invigorate the game because it definitely needs it right now."
McIlroy, speaking to TGL's US broadcaster ESPN, called the venture "golf, but reimagined".
"Sort of trying to take golf into the 21st century," McIlroy said. "We have teams. Obviously there's a lot of technology involved, trying to bring it into the digital era.
"A lot of things that we've taken from other sports, like a shot clock, a timeout, things that you don't see in regular golf... trying to appeal to that bigger sports audience out there."
It's no accident that the league, which will feature 24 US PGA Tour players divided into six teams competing once a week over several months, was announced as the game grappled with the global rift between the upstart LIV Golf circuit and the established US and European tours.
While the rhetoric has calmed, plans to actually bring the warring factions back together remain stalled.
Woods and McIlroy, along with ESPN, British broadcaster Sky Sports and a string of heavyweight investors are hoping the combination of golf skill and technical innovation on display will prove a winning combination for fans.
<h2>Fun fan experience</h2>
The 250,000 square-foot SoFi Center arena, with a seating capacity of 1,500, will feature a raft of innovations. Players will hit into a massive simulator screen from areas of actual mown grass, rough or even sand.
A short game area that transforms between holes can rotate the green to change approach angles and alter its topography.
"The rotating green blew me away," Woods said. "I think it's going to be a lot of fun for not just us but also for the fan experience."
Each four-man team will select three players to compete per match. All three will team for nine holes of alternate shot, followed by six holes of singles with each golfer playing two holes.
Four teams advance to the playoffs with a title series in March. The winning team earns $9 million.
Tuesday's opener will feature Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele of the New York Golf Club taking on Shane Lowry, Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Aberg of the Bay Golf Club.
Woods's Jupiter Links team is slated for action against Los Angeles Golf Club in week two.
Clark, the 2023 US Open champion, said the fast-paced format -- designed to have the matches finish in two hours -- could be a drawing card to new fans and the indoor venue will make players seem more accessible.
"The challenge with golf is that people are farther away, but this is really intimate," he said.&nbsp;
"People are going to see our personalities."

TGL Golf: Tiger Woods & Rory McIlroy backed circuit tees off

Hideki Matsuyama broke the 72-hole PGA Tour tournament scoring record on Sunday, firing an eight-under par 65 to finish on 35-under par 257 and win the Sentry tournament. The 32-year-old Japanese star outdueled American Collin Morikawa to capture his 20th worldwide title and 11th PGA Tour victory in the 2025 season opener.<o:p></o:p>
Matsuyama sank an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, to take the low-par mark for four rounds.<o:p></o:p>
Australian Cameron Smith had owned the PGA Tour all-time low tournament record with a 34-under 258 on the same layout in 2022.<o:p></o:p>
Needing a birdie at the last for the record, and with a secure lead over Morikawa, Matsuyama chipped his third from just off the green, then rolled his final putt straight into the hole, allowing himself a right fist pump of celebration.<o:p></o:p>
"That last putt, it felt like if I make it, it's going to be the record, so I'm so happy that it went in," Matsuyama said through a translator.<o:p></o:p>
Matsuyama, who took a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, won for the third time in 12 months after titles at Riviera and Memphis last year.<o:p></o:p>
"I was able to get a great off-season and get a fresh start this week and play well this week so it's a great way to start," he said.<o:p></o:p>
Sixth-ranked Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, battled fourth-ranked Morikawa, a two-time major winner, over the back nine but stayed ahead the whole way, his lead wavering between two and four shots.<o:p></o:p>

Sports, Golf: Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, battled fourth-ranked Morikawa, a two-time major winner, over the back nine but stayed ahead the whole way.

Hideki Matsuyama broke the 72-hole PGA Tour tournament scoring record on Sunday, firing an eight-under par 65 to finish on 35-under par 257 and win the Sentry tournament. The 32-year-old Japanese star outdueled American Collin Morikawa to capture his 20th worldwide title and 11th PGA Tour victory in the 2025 season opener. Matsuyama sank an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, to take the low-par mark for four rounds. Australian Cameron Smith had owned the PGA Tour all-time low tournament record with a 34-under 258 on the same layout in 2022. Needing a birdie at the last for the record, and with a secure lead over Morikawa, Matsuyama chipped his third from just off the green, then rolled his final putt straight into the hole, allowing himself a right fist pump of celebration. "That last putt, it felt like if I make it, it's going to be the record, so I'm so happy that it went in," Matsuyama said through a translator. Matsuyama, who took a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, won for the third time in 12 months after titles at Riviera and Memphis last year. "I was able to get a great off-season and get a fresh start this week and play well this week so it's a great way to start," he said. Sixth-ranked Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, battled fourth-ranked Morikawa, a two-time major winner, over the back nine but stayed ahead the whole way, his lead wavering between two and four shots. Transgender women who have gone through male puberty will not be allowed to play in women's golf tournaments organised by the R&amp;A from 2025 under a new "fair competition policy", the governing body announced on Thursday.

The R&amp;A, which governs the sport outside the United States and Mexico, has updated guidelines following "extensive consultation" with medical and scientific experts.

The ruling brings the organisation into line with new policies established by both the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) and the USGA (US Golf Association).

"The evidence shows that golf is a gender-affected sport in which male puberty confers a performance advantage," the R&amp;A, based at St Andrews in Scotland, said in a statement.

"From the start of 2025, a golfer entering female professional and elite amateur championships organised by the R&amp;A must have been female at birth or transitioned to female before the onset of male puberty to be eligible to compete.

"Players assigned male at birth and who have experienced male puberty are ineligible to compete in these events, but can enter male professional and elite amateur championships organised by the R&amp;A."

R&amp;A chief executive Martin Slumbers said: "We have carefully reviewed the best available medical and scientific advice relating to participation in elite and scratch level golf competitions by transgender athletes and decided that updating our entry conditions to preserve fairness in our female professional and elite amateur championships is the right thing to do.

"While we believe that golf should be open to all and are committed to developing the sport, we recognise that we have a duty to ensure that in our elite competitions players can compete fairly and equally."

"Very satisfying," Scheffler said. "I did a lot of good stuff today on the course, played a really solid round of golf. I got off to a good start."

Scheffler, who birdied three of the first four holes, joined host Tiger Woods from 2006-2007 and Norway's Viktor Hovland from 2021-2022 as the only back-to-back winners of the event.

Scheffler, who had not competed in a stroke-play event since winning the PGA Tour Championship in August, added to a 2024 trophy haul that includes a second Masters green jacket and Paris Olympic gold.

"Feels nice to take a little break and come back and continue to play some pretty solid golf," Scheffler said. "Very pleased with the results this week."

That includes his work on a new putting grip, which delighted him as he prepares for more rest ahead of January's start to a new campaign.

"Overall, just head home tonight and try and get some rest and continue to work on the stuff I've been working on this off-season to get ready for next season," Scheffler said of his plans.

Thomas, who led compatriot Scheffler by a stroke when the day began, failed to snap a win drought that has lingered since capturing the 2022 PGA Championship.

Thomas followed birdies at the first and fourth holes with bogeys at the par-3 second and fifth.

His stumbling start allowed Scheffler to seize the lead with an eight-foot birdie at the opening hole, a tap-in birdie at the par-5 third and a stunning birdie putt from just inside 50 feet at the fourth.

Kim birdied all three par-5s on the front nine -- the third, sixth and ninth holes -- and sank a four-foot birdie putt at the 10th to reach 19-under.

But Scheffler pitched inside four feet and birdied the ninth, then rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt at the 10th to reach 21-under and his lead stretched to three strokes when Kim lipped out a two-foot putt to bogey the par-5 11th.

Scheffler pulled away from there by sinking birdie putts on four of the final six holes, three from inside four feet and a 10-footer at the par-4 16th.

Rory McIlroy won the DP World Tour Championship for the third time and claimed his sixth Race to Dubai title in the process on Sunday, matching the tally of legendary Spaniard Seve Ballesteros.

The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland made a crucial birdie on the par-4 16th hole to break a deadlock with Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard.&nbsp;

He then birdied the par-5 18th hole for a three-under-par 69 that took him to 15-under for the four days and was enough for a two-shot win that also secured him a sixth Order of Merit.

The four-time major champion broke down on live television when asked what it meant to equal Ballesteros' record.

"It's really cool. I think everyone knows what Seve means to European golf. In the European Ryder Cup locker room, all we have are quotes of Seve," said McIlroy, who is now two behind all-time record holder Colin Montgomerie's tally of eight.

"We had a Seve shirt from 1995 when he played his last Ryder Cup in our changing room last year... For me to be mentioned in the same breath as Seve, I am very proud."

Rasmus, who was trying to follow in the footsteps of his twin brother Nicolai and take the trophy back to Denmark for a second year in a row, made a stunning 22-footer par save on the 17th hole, but could not put the pressure on McIlroy on the 18th as he settled for a par and a final round score of 71.

McIlroy, who started with a bogey and then made four successive birdies, dropped a couple of shots around the turn to be tied with Hojgaard after 15 holes at 13-under.&nbsp;

He finally edged ahead with a stunning second shot on the par-4 16th hole from 137 yards to less than a foot for his fifth birdie of the day and drained a six-footer on the final hole.

<h2>'Fitting end to 2024'</h2>

"I think I would have been miserable for a few weeks if I hadn't won today. I've been through a lot this year professionally and personally. It feels like the fitting end to 2024. I've persevered a lot. Had close calls. Wasn't able to get it done.

"So, to be able to get over the line, when I got off to a great start and didn't have my best in the middle of the round, was very satisfying. I felt a lot of pressure out there, most of them self-inflicted. But to finish the way I did, I can now go and have a good few weeks off," added McIlroy.

Including the Zurich Classic that the world number three claimed alongside Shane Lowry, it was McIlroy's fourth worldwide win of the season.

Hojgaard was disappointed at not winning the title, but happy to have secured the No1 card of the 10 PGA Tour cards on offer at the end of the week for the top 10 players who are not already members. The No1 card gives him entry into some of the big events, including the Players Championship.

"I came to Abu Dhabi (the previous week) with the goal of securing the No1 PGA Tour card, and I am happy that I have done it," said Hojgaard, who missed the card by one spot last year.

"It sucks to lose, but you need to make birdies in the end and Rory did that. I battled hard through the day."

Australia's Adam Scott and Ireland's Lowry shot final-round 68s to tie for third place at 11-under par alongside France's Antoine Rozner. England's Tyrrell Hatton was solo 6th at 10-under.

The 10 players who earned their PGA Tour cards are Hojgaard, Thriston Lawrence of South Africa, England's Paul Waring, Dane Niklas Norgaard, Swede Jesper Svensson, Antoine Rozner of France, Italy's Matteo Manassero, Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark, Japan's Rikuya Hoshino and Tom McKibbin of Northern Ireland.

Golf: Rory McIlroy wins sixth Race to Dubai title with DP World Tour Championship win

In an unsurprising turn of events, the British tabloid report of a finalized merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf may have been premature. The Sun reported Saturday that the long-awaited merger between the rival golf circuits was complete and, per the headline, "Golf's civil war OVER." But on Tuesday, Front Office Sports cited industry sources in reporting that the tabloid had jumped the gun. Several details remain to be ironed out, including the major issue of navigating antitrust concerns in the United States.

There is "heavy internal pressure" to finalize the merger before the end of 2024 in the interest of making future scheduling easier, Front Office Sports reported. The PGA Tour has already released its 2025 schedule, and LIV has put out four tournament dates for 2025 so far.

The shock merger between the PGA Tour and LIV was announced in early June 2023, with a self-imposed Dec. 31, 2023, deadline to finalize the "framework agreement." In an unsurprising turn of events, the British tabloid report of a finalized merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf may have been premature. Golf: PGA Tour-LIV merger rumors premature - Report

J.T. Poston survived late pressure from Doug Ghim, firing five birdies in a four-under par 67 to claim the third US PGA Tour title of his career on Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada. Poston, 31 and ranked 64th in the world, finished with a 22-under par total of 262 at TPC Summerlin, to beat Ghim by one stroke. Ghim had an eagle and four birdies in his six-under par 65, including a six-foot birdie at the last that put him on 21-under 263.

Poston, tied for the lead when darkness halted play on Saturday, birdied three of his last five holes to complete a five-under par third-round 66 on Sunday morning to take a three-stroke lead over Ghim into the final round. The tournament had been in catch-up mode since dangerous winds led to a four-hour delay on Friday.

Ghim had cut the deficit to one stroke with an 11-foot eagle at the par-five ninth. But Poston rolled in a 21-foot birdie at the 12th and made a three-foot birdie at the par-five 13th to push his lead back to three.

Poston added a birdie at 15, but Ghim kept the pressure on with a birdie at the par-five 16th and Poston missed a four-foot par putt to bogey the par-three 17th and send them to the 18th tee with Poston's lead down to two strokes.

That proved to be enough. After Ghim drained his birdie putt, Poston stepped up to make his four-footer for par to claim his first victory since the 2022 John Deere Classic.

"I just told myself this is what you dream of -- you've got a putt to win on the PGA Tour," Poston said, adding that he'd "just tried to forget" about poor putts on 16 and 17. "Didn't make very good strokes on either of them, but I just told myself I've made a million and (Ghim is) in this. Do one more."

Ghim, 28 and ranked 148th in the world, remains in search of his first PGA Tour title. Germany's Matti Schmid and Rico Hoey of the Philippines both carded five-under par 66 to share third place on 19-under 265.

American Michael Kim roared up the leaderboard with a final-round 62 for an 18-under par total of 266, sharing fifth with Davis Thompson and South Korea's Lee Kyoung-hoon, who both shot 66.&nbsp;South Korean Tom Kim, the 2022 and 2023 champion, missed the cut in his bid for a three-peat.

A strong back nine capped by an eagle on the par-five 17th propelled Japan's Mao Saigo into a one-stroke lead Saturday heading into the final round at Buick LPGA Shanghai.

Saigo carded a seven-under-par 65 to edge out surging home hope Yin Ruoning, the highest-ranked player in the field, who shot a stunning 63 in her third round.

Among Saigo's highlights was lobbing a tricky chip shot from the rough on the par-five fourth hole, landing the ball softly on the fringe and watching it roll straight into the cup for birdie.

"I knew that scores and standings were changing throughout the day," said the 23-year-old Saigo, adding that she "just concentrated on playing (her) best".

"I made some good shots and made that last long putt that put me into the lead," she added, referring to her eagle roll from distance on the 17th green.

Hot on her tail was China's 22-year-old Yin, current world number four and champion of last year's Women's PGA Championship.

Yin started strong, shooting 32 in a front-nine performance that saw her chip in for birdie on the par-three seventh hole.

Yin really pumped up the home crowd at the 17th-hole green, eliciting huge cheers when she sank a mid-length putt for eagle and a brief outright lead.

"Today there was a bigger crowd and I always hear people rooting my name," said Yin.

"I just really, really enjoy playing at home and I hope I can keep the momentum going for the last day," she added.

"I think tomorrow I'm playing as a chaser."

Former world number one Kim Sei-young of South Korea had led after each of the first two rounds but slid to third place after shooting a 69, three strokes behind Saigo.

Behind Kim came Yealimi Noh of the United States at a three-day combined score of 13 under par, followed by a six-way tie for fifth place at 11 under.

Lucy Li of the United States finished with an even-par 72 on the day, falling into the crowded tie for fifth after beginning the day alongside Saigo in second place.

PGA Tour stars Rory McIlroy and top-ranked Scottie Scheffler will face LIV Golf's Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in an exhibition event in Las Vegas in December organizers announced Wednesday. The 18-hole, made-for television event between four of the biggest names from the upstart Saudi-backed LIV series and the PGA Tour will be staged at Shadow Creek.

Scheffler, who won the Masters and Olympics among his eight titles this year, and McIlroy, a four-time major winner, will partner against two-time US Open champion DeChambeau, who edged McIlroy for this year's US Open crown, and five-time major winner Koepka -- the only players to win majors while active LIV members.

The PGA Tour and LIV's backers, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), are in merger talks but have been unable to complete a deal to reunite golf's elite players.

The LIV-PGA billed as 'The Showdown', McIlroy said last month at the Irish Open, is less about trying to push those long-stalled negotiations and more about bringing some joy to golf fans annoyed by the three-season split.

"I wouldn't say it's meant to send a message. It's more we wanted to do something that, I guess, all golf fans could get excited about," said McIlroy.

"You've got the best player in the world. You've got two guys in Bryson and Brooks that have won majors in the last two years. You've got me in there who -- I haven't done what those guys have done the last couple years but I've definitely been I feel one of the best players in the world.

"It's a way to show golf fans in the world that this is what could happen or these are the possibilities going forward."

With LIV players banned from PGA Tour events since the upstart series swiped big-name players from the PGA in 2022, major championships have been the only place where LIV and PGA stars compete against one another.

"It's in the middle of December. There's not a lot going on in the game of golf. So trying to get people excited about something before the season starts again," McIlroy said.

"We all thought it was a good idea and something that hopefully is a sign of things to come in the future."

In June at Pinehurst, McIlroy had a chance to win his first major since 2014 but lost to DeChambeau by one stroke on the final hole at Pinehurst.

Golf: Chiara Tamburlini headlines superstar roster participating in Women’s Indian Open 2024

England Test team coach Brendon McCullum has defended James Anderson's decision to skip the start of Pakistan to play golf. England’s bowling coach Anderson is participating in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a pro-am golf tournament in Scotland. He missed the preparatory camp ahead of the Multan Test, with reports suggesting that he will join England’s backroom staff on October 8 (the second day of the first Test).

However, despite not being present with the new set of bowlers, Anderson was in constant touch with the players via social media, teaching them over mobile phone, a concept that former England captain and opener Michael Atherton calls ‘coaching by WhatsApp’.

Ahead of the first day’s play in Multan, where England lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, McCullum defended Anderson, saying that we live in a world where you can communicate without being present in person.

“Two months ago, you guys were saying he didn’t deserve to be the coach. Now we are missing him. That’s an affirmation of how good an impact Jimmy Anderson has made in the short period of time [during] his transition from player to coach,” McCullum said to Atherton during a chat on Sky Sports.

Since stepping aside from Test cricket earlier this year, Anderson took over as the bowling consultant role with the England Test team, with McCullum reminding everyone of his transition, adding he’s not in a full-time role.

“It’s a combined decision amongst everyone,” McCullum asserted.&nbsp;

“He [Anderson] has made a huge transition from a 20-odd-year career into his new role, and he is on as a bowling consultant as well, it is not a full-time role,” the head coach continued.

<h2>No one would have a problem with enjoying</h2>

McCullum understands the constraints of a tight international calendar, insisting everyone must find ways to relax and have fun.&nbsp;

In Anderson’s case, McCullum emphasised what he did for England and how he wishes to adapt to his new role, if Anderson wants some time off, so be it, adding he doesn’t think anyone would have problems with that.&nbsp;

“The challenges and demands of the international cricket calendar mean you need to get out and enjoy yourself as well. If he were at home with his family, I question whether anyone would have problems with it," he added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan got off to a flyer against England in Multan, with the opener Abdullah Shafique and captain Shan Masood completing respective tons inside two sessions.&nbsp;

Brendon McCullum defends James Anderson’s decision to miss start of England's tour of Pakistan to play golf

Spaniard Angel Hidalgo emerged victorious against compatriot Jon Rahm in a play-off to win the Spanish Open in Madrid on Sunday. Hidalgo needed two extra holes to beat three-time champion Rahm and claim play-off victory by sinking a two-foot putt after both players had birdied the first.&nbsp;

"Two or three years ago, I was in the first tee, in the trees, supporting Jon -- without playing, I just come here to Madrid to see the tournament," said Hidalgo. "To be here and win the tournament is unreal. Oh, my gosh, it's amazing."

The duo started the day together in an all-Spanish final group with&nbsp;David Puig. But Hidalgo's two-shot overnight lead evaporated as his group-mates birdied the first hole -- which he bogeyed.

The 26-year-old recovered his composure to complete his final round with a score of 70. When Rahm birdied the 17th and 18th, his final 68 meant the two Spaniards were tied on 14-under, forcing a play-off.

After the pair both birdied the first extra hole, Rahm hit a wayward tee-shot on the second and then chipped through the green. Hidalgo kept his nerve to nurse the ball close to the pin and then made no mistake from close range to seal his maiden win at his local open.

"May he (Hidalgo) enjoy it," said Rahm. "Winning at home, winning a Spanish Open with all the support that there has been. You could tell how much he felt it and how important it was for him."

Spaniard Angel Hidalgo emerged victorious against compatriot Jon Rahm in a play-off to win the Spanish Open in Madrid on Sunday. Hidalgo needed two extra holes to beat three-time champion Rahm and claim play-off victory by sinking a two-foot putt after both players had birdied the first. "Two or three years ago, I was in the first tee, in the trees, supporting Jon -- without playing, I just come here to Madrid to see the tournament," said Hidalgo. "To be here and win the tournament is unreal. Oh, my gosh, it's amazing." The duo started the day together in an all-Spanish final group with David Puig. But Hidalgo's two-shot overnight lead evaporated as his group-mates birdied the first hole -- which he bogeyed. You could tell how much he felt it and how important it was for him." Spanish Angel Hidalgo beats three-time champion Jon Rahm in playoff to claim Spanish Open

Cam Smith's Ripper won the LIV Golf Team Championship on Sunday, the all-Australian squad defeating Dustin Johnson's all-American 4Aces and Iron Heads by three strokes. Smith, the 2022 British Open champion, birdied three of the last six holes to fire a four-under par 68 at Maridoe Golf Club in suburban Dallas. That gave Ripper a team total of 11-under par 277 with 4Aces and Kevin Na's Iron Heads sharing second on 280 and Legion XIII, playing without captain Jon Rahm, fourth on 282.

The Aussies denied 4Aces a second team title in three seasons and doomed a worst-to-first bid for Iron Heads, who finished last in the LIV season team standings.

Justin Herbert birdied four of his last five holes to shoot 69 for Ripper with Marc Leishman and Matt Jones both on 70.

"It's so good ... not only great golfers but they're better people and I think that's what being a Ripper is all about," Smith said shortly after his teammates doused him in champagne on the 18th green. "To have those guys out there today to lean on, there was something telling me that we were going to be all right."

The stroke-play final saw the scores of all four players counting to the team total after a shotgun start.

Ripper, 4Aces and Iron Heads were tied for the lead at 8-under as the captains final group, which began at the first hole, reached the 16th tee. Jones birdied the par-5 second to lift Ripper one ahead at 9-under while Na made bogey at 16 and Scott Vincent closed with a birdie at the third to keep the Iron Heads one adrift.

Harold Varner III closed with a long birdie putt at the first to lift 4Aces level with Ripper but Herbert answered on the same hole moments later with an eight-foot birdie to put Ripper back on top at 10-under.

Smith birdied the par-5 17th to give the Aussies a two-stroke lead and when Johnson found the water off the 18th tee, the outcome was all-but settled, Smith finishing off the triumph with a par minutes later.

Johnson, the 2016 US Open and 2020 Masters champion, closed with a bogey to shoot 69. The 40-year-old Johnson, who won a LIV individual title at Las Vegas in February, shared his team's low score with birdie-free Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters winner.

Iron Heads, the 13th and last seeds, ousted defending champion Crushers in a Saturday semi-final. They were led by Na and Japan's Jinichiro Kozuma on 69.

Legion XIII, usually led by season individual LIV champion Rahm, was without the two-time major winner from Spain after he withdrew Saturday with flu symptoms.

Saudi-backed LIV's third campaign closes with merger negotiations ongoing between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). LIV has announced four events to start the 2025 season, including Riyadh and Adelaide in February plus Hong Kong and Singapore in March.
