LIV Golf players will be eligible for the Ryder Cup and the PGA Championship, the PGA of America announced Thursday in a move made to ensure access to top talent. Since the early days of the upstart Saudi-backed series, the US PGA Tour has banned LIV players from competing in its events, making it hard for LIV players to earn world ranking points and qualify for majors.

But PGA and LIV players have faced each other at major tournaments in recent years, with LIV's Brooks Koepka winning last year's PGA Championship for his fifth major crown and receiving a captain's pick place on last year's US Ryder Cup team.

"To ensure the PGA Championship will continue to deliver the strongest field in golf and that the US Ryder Cup team will continue to have access to the best American players, the PGA of America board has determined that LIV Golf players will be eligible for both," the PGA of America statement said.

"Going forward, all LIV Golf players are eligible for the PGA Championship and any American player who qualifies for the Ryder Cup on points or is added to the US team as a captain's pick is eligible to compete."

The PGA of America decision solidifies spots in events although several LIV players had been granted special invitations to certain majors in past seasons and Koepka was welcomed into the Ryder Cup squad. Some LIV players have been able to compete in majors thanks largely to wins before LIV began, many competing as past winners of specific majors.

The move shows tensions could be easing in golf's civil war even as talks continue between Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, LIV's backers, and the PGA Tour about a merger agreement, negotiations that have stretched well beyond their original deadline of the end of last year.

Talks were conducted last week in New York but among the sticking points remains how to punish former PGA players who defected to LIV should they return and what LIV's future might become.

Golf: LIV golfers to be eligible for US Ryder Cup team, PGA Championship

Spain's Jon Rahm fired four birdies -- including a 12-footer at the 17th -- to win LIV Golf Chicago on Sunday and clinch the Saudi-backed circuit's individual season title worth $18 million.

The two-time major winner from Spain, who made the jump to the breakaway league last December, captured his second victory in the past three events, sandwiched around a runner-up finish to Brooks Koepka in a playoff at LIV Golf Greenbrier in August.

Rahm, who hasn't finished outside the top 10 in 11 events, arrived at Bolingbrook Golf Course near Chicago this week with Joaquin Niemann -- a two-time winner this season -- his only rival for the season title.

After a six-under-par second round on Saturday, Rahm took a one-shot lead over compatriot Sergio Garcia into the final round, with Niemann three adrift and needing to finish in front of Rahm to bag the individual champion's bonus.

Rahm had birdies at the third, sixth and 10th holes, and after letting a couple of birdie chances go begging, he sealed it with his birdie at 17, carding a four-under final round for a 54-hole total of 11-under par.

"I woke up really nervous today," Rahm said. "I wanted to do a really good show and get it over the line. Just really happy I played as good as I did.

"To go bogey-free on the weekend, one bogey all tournament, it's quite spectacular," he said. "I'm very proud of the putt on 17, which made 18 a lot, a lot, easier."

In addition to his $18 million champion's bonus he bagged $4 million for the tournament win.

He finished three shots better than Niemann, whose four-under final gave him an eight-under total that left him tied for second with Garcia.

The LIV season concludes next week with the team championship in Dallas.

After that, Rahm has his sights set on playing a trio of DP World Tour events to maintain his Ryder Cup eligibility.

He said Wednesday he was unwilling to pay the fines levied by the DP World Tour on golfers who fail to obtain releases to play in LIV events that conflict with tour tournaments.

Rahm has reportedly appealed the fines, and as that process plays out would be eligible to tee up at the Spanish Open later this month.

He also wants to play the Andalucia Masters and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Golf: Jon Rahm wins LIV Golf Chicago and 2024 individual crown

Spain's Jon Rahm wants to play three European golf events before the end of the year to maintain his Ryder Cup eligibility, but said Wednesday he won't pay fines levied by the DP World Tour over his LIV golf participation. The two-time major winner, who joined LIV Golf last December, is facing a deadline to pay the fines imposed by the DP World Tour on golfers who failed to obtain releases to play in the Saudi-backed league events that conflict with tour events.

As he prepared for the LIV Golf tournament in Chicago this week, Rahm said he hoped to play two events in his homeland -- the Spanish Open and the Andalucia Masters -- and in the Dunhill Links Championship.

But he acknowledged that he wasn't sure if he would be allowed to tee it up. "We entered a long time ago,” Rahm said. “Whether they let me play or not is a different thing. I’m not a big fan of the fines. I think I’ve been outspoken about that. "I don't intend to pay the fines and we keep trying to have a discussion with them about how we can make this happen," he added.

"I've said many times, I don't go to the Spanish Open for the glory or anything else. I think it's my duty to Spanish golf to be there and I also want to play in Sotogrande."

There is an apparent avenue for Rahm to play, if he appeals the sanctions. LIV Golf's Tyrrell Hatton competed at the British Masters after appealing his sanctions, with the penalties to be resolved at a later date.

One person likely watching the situation closely is Luke Donald, who will captain Europe in next year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.

Rahm was one of Europe's star performers in their victory over the United States last year in Rome in the most recent edition of the biennial match play showdown.

Golf: Spain's Jon Rahm eyes DP World Tour events despite LIV-related sanctions

World number one Scottie Scheffler saw his lead in the race for the season-ending Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title cut to four strokes after Collin Morikawa fired a superb 63 in Friday's second round at East Lake. Scheffler, who began the season finale on 10-under, an advantage reflecting his top spot in the FedEx Cup standings, now sits on 21-under after his 5-under 66.

The Masters champion had begun the day with a seven-stroke lead but it was not only Morikawa who closed the gap ahead of the weekend. Xander Schauffele bounced back from his disappointing 70 in the opening round, to card 64 and move within five strokes of Scheffler.

Scheffler was as solid as ever with five birdies, his sole blemish coming on the par-4 13th where he found two bunkers before missing a nine-foot putt for par. The American was happy with his performance even if he felt he had been unlucky on the greens.

"I feel like my swing is in a good spot. I've hit it nice last couple days. Really felt like I've hit a lot of lips on the greens, but hitting a lot of quality putts," he said. "Today the putts that did not go in did not -- a lot of them did not miss the cup by very much. A lot of quality stuff out there, and I'm in a good spot going into the weekend," he added.

But while the handicap system gives Scheffler a buffer of protection from his rivals, Morikawa appears determined to push the favorite all the way. The American reached the turn 4-under and while he bogeyed the 11th he bounced back with birdies on the 13th and 14th.&nbsp; A late suspension of play for a storm warning threatened to disrupt his momentum, but Morikawa came out and birdied the last two holes to send a clear message to Scheffler.

"For me, it's just bringing energy and just kind of staying alive out there. I've got a game plan that I've set out, and I'm really going to stick to that, just knowing that we've got two more rounds left of the season," he said.

Being paired with Scheffler allowed Morikawa to see his rival close-up but he said he remained focused on his own task. "He's such a good player that you just know he's going to keep going low and making birdies. I saw that firsthand. I've seen it for years. For me, it's just keep my foot on the gas," he said.

Schauffele put his Thursday struggles out of mind as he produced a bogey free round and came back out in the late evening, after the delay, to make birdie on the last. "It was better. It was nice to finish off with two big putts. Pretty dark out, so happy those two went in. Keeps the momentum from what was a pretty good round," said this year's British Open and PGA Championship winner.

Schauffele said that Scheffler's lead meant there was no room for caution. "(Scottie's) been killing everyone at that all year. I know he's not going to let up, so there's only one way to get him," he said.

Australian Adam Scott and American Sahith Theegala and Wyndham Clark are all tied in fourth place on 12-under, nine behind Scheffler. Clark said there was no question of giving up the chase. "It's going to be very tough to catch up with him. He'd have to not play his best and I'd have to play unbelievable. I'm still chasing after that top spot, but I need some help. But a good round tomorrow, if I go shoot something 6-, 7-, 8-under, maybe he shoots even par and we're right in it," he said.

Golf: Colin Morikawa closes in on world number one Scottie Scheffler at Tour Championship

World number one Scottie Scheffler swiftly put himself in a commanding position at the Tour Championship, the finale to the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs, with his 6-under 65 giving him a seven shot lead. Under the format for the playoff final, designed to reward players for their position in the FedEx Cup standings, Scheffler started the day at East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, on 10-under, combining with his opening round to place him at the top of the leaderboard on 16-under.

His closest challengers are Collin Morikawa, who shot a 5-under 66 to move to 9-under, and Xander Schauffele, who started on eight-under and shot a one-under 70. The Masters champion Scheffler let his advantage slip by a shot on the first hole, where he made a bogey on the par-4 hole, but that was the only blemish on his scorecard.

The American caught fire on the back nine, where he made five of his seven birdies, including three in a row from the 12th hole onwards. "I'm trying not to think much about the starting strokes stuff," said Scheffler. "I think it's still a bit weird with it not being a traditional event. But it was nice to get off to a good start in the first round, and I feel like I did a lot of things well today," he said.

During the previous two years, Scheffler had come into this tournament with a lead, but had been unable to close out and clinch the Cup -- but he said he is now trying to play the event as if it was a regular 72-hole competition.

"Just like any other tournament, if I came out here and shot 2-over par and this was a regular stroke play event, I'd be sitting pretty far back from the lead," he said. "So treating it like I would any other tournament, just staying in my lane and doing the things I'm good at, and that's just trying to focus on the task at hand and let all the other stuff take care of itself," he said.

Scheffler had said before the tournament that the key at East Lake was to keep the ball on the fairways, given the rough would make it tough to control the ball into the firm, new greens.

That point was proven by Schauffele, the PGA Championship and British Open winner this year, who made four bogeys and just one birdie mainly due to his wayward driving.

"Kind of hit it in the rough a lot, and with brand new greens, I think I scored okay actually for how bad I hit it. But yeah, overall it was kind of a 'meh' day. Wasn't something to be proud of or disgusted by," he said. "Scottie was almost in every fairway it looked like. It looked like he was going through wedge practice while he was out there. If you're in the fairway you can attack this golf course," added Schauffele.

If anyone is going to push Scheffler to the wire, the evidence of the opening round suggested it could be Morikawa, who made six straight birdies from the 10th hole onwards, having reached the turn one-over for his round.

"I'm going to use that back nine to hopefully push myself the next three days," he said. "After nine I told myself to start only thinking about my shot and not worrying about if the ball is going to be perfect or not.&nbsp; "(My) game is good enough to come out here and win. I've just got to get out of my own head," he said.

Five players in the 30-man field found themselves tied fourth at 8-under, eight shots behind Scheffler. The most impressive of that quintet was Australian Adam Scott, who continued his recent run of good form with a bogey-free 5-under 66.

For all the pre-tournament talk of how tough the course might be, only one player shot over-par for the round: American Billy Horschel, who made 73.

World number one Scottie Scheffler in pole for FedEx Cup title at Tour Championship

Brooks Koepka beat Jon Rahm in a playoff to win the LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;Greenbrier title on Sunday for his record fifth career crown on the Saudi-backed series. Five-time major champion Koepka, made par on the first playoff hole while Rahm made bogey.

Koepka, whose most recent LIV win came in May at Singapore, said it was his most prized because of his day-long fight with playing partner Rahm. "This is probably my favorite one," Koepka said. "It's always good when you have to battle good players. "Jon is a hell of a player. For whatever reason, he has always gotten the better of me a little bit as of late. It feels nice just to get one."

Rahm outdueled Koepka in the final round to win the 2023 Masters for his second major title but Koepka said that didn't add motivation. "I wasn't thinking about it," he said. "Just one of those things. Let's go play&nbsp;golf. It's a good win."

Koepka fired a seven-under par 63 in the final round while Rahm shot 65 to leave both on 19-under 191 after 54 holes at the Old White course in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. American Jason Kokrak was third on 18-under with England's 51-year-old Richard Bland and Australian Marc Leishman sharing fourth on 17-under.

In the playoff, Rahm's tee shot at the par-3 18th went to the back edge of a bunker. One leg in and the other out of the sand, the Spaniard blasted 20 feet beyond the hole.

Koepka missed his birdie putt but tapped in for par, then Rahm lipped out on his par putt and Koepka had the victory. Koepka's earlier LIV titles came at Jeddah in 2022 and 2023, Orlando in 2023 and Singapore.

Koepka collected major wins at the 2017 and 2018 US Opens and the 2018, 2019 and 2023 PGA Championships.

Rahm, who also won the 2021 US Open, jumped from the PGA Tour to LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;last December and won his first LIV event last month, taking LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;UK at Centurion in England. The 29-year-old Spaniard shared fifth at the Paris Olympics earlier this month. Despite the defeat, Rahm remained second to Chile's Joaquin Niemann in the season standings, with the campaign title to be decided at next month's regular-season finale at Chicago.

Rahm sank a five-foot par putt at the 10th hole to match Koepka for the lead at 16-under and launch the back-nine battle. Bland followed three birdies in a row with an eagle at the par-5 12th to swipe the lead at 17-under.

Koepka made a tap-in birdie at 12 to match Bland then curled in a 15-foot birdie putt on 13 to seize the lead at 18-under, Rahm making birdie at 13 as well to stay one adrift.

When Koepka curled in a 15-foot birdie putt at the 14th, he doubled his edge to two strokes. But Rahm birdied 16 and the par-5 17th to grab a share of the lead with Koepka, whose birdie putt at 17 lipped out, and both parred 18 to force the playoff.

Rahm, who fired a 62 on Saturday, opened Sunday with a birdie to reach 15-under and lead by two. Koepka birdied two of his first three holes to pull within a stroke and both birdied the fourth. Rahm made a bogey at six and Koepka first took the lead with a birdie at seven.

Koepka's Smash, with Kokrak in the lineup, won the team competition on 53-under, defeating Leishman and the all-Australian Ripper squad by three strokes.

Brooks Koepka beat Jon Rahm in a playoff to win the LIV Golf Greenbrier title on Sunday for his record fifth career crown on the Saudi-backed series. It feels nice just to get one." Rahm outdueled Koepka in the final round to win the 2023 Masters for his second major title but Koepka said that didn't add motivation. "I wasn't thinking about it," he said. "Just one of those things. Let's go play golf. It's a good win." Koepka fired a seven-under par 63 in the final round while Rahm shot 65 to leave both on 19-under 191 after 54 holes at the Old White course in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. American Jason Kokrak was third on 18-under with England's 51-year-old Richard Bland and Australian Marc Leishman sharing fourth on 17-under. Chris Kirk aced the par-3 14th hole on his way to grabbing a one-stroke lead after Thursday's first round of the PGA St. Jude's Championship. The 39-year-old American, seeking his seventh PGA triumph, fired a six-under par 64 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, in the FedEx Cup playoff opener. Sharing second on 65 were Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, playing without his regular caddie and coach after a London restaurant robbery, plus Canada's Taylor Pendrith and France's Matthieu Pavon.

On a hot day, Kirk had the most sizzling shot of all when he played a 6-iron high draw from 205 yards at 14 that landed 10 feet right of the flagstick, then bounced and rolled into the hole. "I was just trying to hit it left of the hole and make a three," Kirk said. "Didn't quite come off where I was looking. I was like, 'Oh my God.' "Just trying to hit it in the middle of the green. I was just swinging really good and the ball sensed it, just found it's way in the right direction."

The hole-in-one, the fourth of Kirk's PGA career, gave him a three-stroke lead but a closing bogey brought him back near the pack.

Kirk, the 2014 playoff runner-up, captured the PGA season-opening tournament of champions in Hawaii after winning last year's Honda Classic. He sought "boring" but consistent play and began well with birdies on a putt from just over 11 feet at the par-4 second and just beyond 18 feet at the par-5 third.

Kirk also birdied from just inside 20 feet at the sixth and dropped his approach inches from the hole at the ninth for a tap-in birdie. A 17-foot birdie putt at the 12th set the stage for the crucial ace.

"The goal is to trust yourself and make it as boring as possible," Kirk said. "That was my plan and I was doing it for the first 13 holes. Very consistent, steady, hitting solid shots, making a few putts here and there -- 14 was not boring golf."

<h2>- Matsuyama robbed but OK -</h2>

Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion,&nbsp;was robbed in London on a stopover on his way to the United States from the Paris Olympics, where he took the bronze medal. While Matsuyama only lost his wallet, his caddie, Shota Hiyato, and coach, Mikhito Kuromiya, lost their passports and visas and returned to Japan in hopes of getting new paperwork and returning to Matsuyama before the playoffs end in two weeks at East Lake in Atlanta.

"It was an unfortunate situation," Matsuyama said. "Luckily I only lost my wallet... we're trying hard now to get their visas back in line. "We're pushing hard, looking toward East Lake. Shota will make it, I think, but my coach probably won't."

The robbery has not thrown off Matsuyama, who says, "I've forgotten it completely" and notes he talks by phone to his coach every night. "We didn't even know it happened," he said. "We were just having a friendly dinner and Shota was the first one -- hey, where's my bag? Of course it was frustrating, but we really didn't know it happened. It was just kind of all of a sudden. We had already paid the check."

Matsuyama's caddie this week is Taiga Tabuchi, the regular bagman for Japan's Ryo Hisatsune. "Taiga did a great job today, so we'll just see how it goes," said Matsuyama. "I'm playing well and that momentum has carried over. Now it's just whether or not the results can go with it."

Scottie Scheffler won men's golf gold on his Olympic debut with a thrilling one-stroke victory ahead of Britain's Tommy Fleetwood on Sunday.

The American world number one secured his seventh win of the year with a course record-equalling 62 at Le Golf National to edge out silver medallist Fleetwood on 19-under par for the tournament.

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama had to settle for bronze on 17 under after a dramatic final round that saw several players challenge for the medals.

Jon Rahm sat four shots ahead after 10 holes but fell away badly to finish tied fifth with Rory McIlroy, whose hopes were dashed by a double-bogey on the 15th.

"I did it myself. What it represents and what it could have been for Spain is what makes it more painful," said Rahm.

Reigning champion Xander Schauffele, who was tied for the overnight lead with Rahm, dropped out of contention with a three-over back nine.

"It sucks. Not very happy with it to be honest," said the PGA Championship and British Open champion. "Not a whole lot of positives, obviously, from it."

Frenchman Victor Perez delighted the home fans with a stunning surge through the field but finished in fourth place despite his 63, which included a run of four birdies and an eagle in the space of five holes.

Scheffler continued his magnificent season, which has also delivered his second Masters and Players Championship titles, with a majestic fourth round.

He was six strokes off the pace at one point during the back nine, but carded a six-under 29 for the inward half as those behind him on the course, especially Rahm, faltered.

<h2>Rahm blows lead</h2>

Rahm had eased into a four-shot lead with six birdies in his first 10 holes and appeared to be cruising to the title.

But back-to-back bogeys, coupled with successive birdies from Fleetwood, saw the Spaniard's advantage evaporate.

Scheffler, McIlroy, Matsuyama and Perez all seized the opportunity to charge into contention, leaving the top six players on the leaderboard separated by just two shots as the final group headed into the last five holes.

Ireland's McIlroy was the first to blink, dumping his approach shot on the 15th hole into the water to all but end his title tilt.

Rahm then suffered another serious dent to his bid when he contrived to make a double-bogey on the easy par-five 14th.

Perez narrowly missed long birdie putts on the final two greens but set the clubhouse target at 16-under overall after a sparkling back-nine 29 which sent roars echoing across the Albatros course.

Scheffler, who had earlier started the day with three straight birdies, moved into the solo lead for the first time with a fourth successive birdie on the 17th, despite having found the rough off the tee.

He safely parred the last to set a mark of 19-under, which Fleetwood reached with a brilliant birdie on the 16th.

But the Englishman handed a shot back on the 17th after a clumsy chip from just off the green, leaving himself needing birdie at the last to force a play-off.

Fleetwood could not produce any more late heroics to suffer yet another near-miss in his career, while Scheffler celebrated on the practice range.

Paris Games 2024: Scottie Scheffler wins Olympic gold in men's golf by one stroke

American Xander Schauffele celebrated achieving a lifelong dream after winning his second major title with an ice-cool two-shot victory at the British Open on Sunday. The 30-year-old Olympic champion also won this year's PGA Championship to end his long wait for a first major crown. "Oh man...it's been quite a journey," Schauffele said during the trophy presentation on the 18th green after being handed the Claret Jug. "It took me forever just to win one and to have two now is something else. I feel very honoured hearing my name called with Open champion right after it. It's something I have dreamed of for a very long time."

The world number three, who began the day one shot off the pace, produced a bogey-free final round as he closed with a superb six-under 65 at a blustery Royal Troon. Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship with the lowest score in major championship history, reeled off four birdies on the back nine to break clear of a tightly-bunched leaderboard and post a winning total of nine-under 275.

"I've always dreamed of doing it," said the Californian who is known for his laid-back and unflappable approach to the game. "That walk up 18 truly is really one of the coollest feelings I've ever had in my life. I got chills walking down 18 and I quickly had to zap myself back into focus because the tournament wasn't over yet."

<h2>Best&nbsp;Round</h2>

Schauffele, who began the day one shot off the pace, produced what he described as the best round he ever played. The San Diego native reeled off four birdies on the back nine to move clear and post a winning total of nine-under 275, finishing two ahead of fellow American Billy Horschel and England's Justin Rose.

Schauffele had won the PGA Championship with the lowest score in major championship history - a 21-under aggregate - and became the first player to win multiple majors in the same year since Brooks Koepka landed the 2018 US&nbsp;Open and PGA Championship.

"This week was hard," Schauffele said, referring in particular to the brutal weather conditions. "It was very difficult. I think winning the first major helped me a lot today on the back nine. I had some feeling of calmness come through. It was very helpful on what has been one of the hardest back nines I've ever played in a tournament."

After rolling in a birdie at the par-three 14th, Schauffele said he had a sense that victory was there for the taking. When he birdied the par-five 16th, after pitching to four feet from below the front right of the green, that extended his lead to three shots and the championship was all but over.

"I felt like I limited the mistakes pretty well," Schauffele said. "I was lucky to only have one really hard round in the wind and rain and I managed that day better than I ever thought I could."

Golf: 'It's been...' - Xander Schauffele reacts after winning British Open

American Xander Schauffele won the British Open on Sunday to claim the second major championship of his career, just two months after winning his first.

The 30-year-old Californian delivered a faultless final round of 65 at Royal Troon on Scotland's west coast to emerge from a congested leaderboard and grab the Claret Jug.

Schauffele, winner of the PGA Championship in May, finished on nine-under par, two shots ahead of England's Justin Rose and Billy Horschel of the USA.

"Oh man," he said. "Hearing your name called with 'Open champion' after it is something I've dreamed of for a very long time."

Schauffele had started the last 18 tied for second with five other players, a shot behind overnight leader Horschel.

Schauffele put together a tidy front nine under benign conditions on the Ayrshire links, reaching the turn at two-under par for the day after birdies at the sixth and seventh.

He then burst into life at the start of the inward half as his nearest challengers -- Rose, world number 62 Horschel and South African Thriston Lawrence-- began to falter.

Schauffele hit a sublime approach to the difficult 11th to set up a tap-in birdie before sinking a 16-foot birdie putt on the 13th to get to seven under alongside 27-year-old Lawrence.

Moments later Schauffele was in front on his own after Lawrence dropped his first shot of the day on the 12th.

The American then rolled in a 12-footer on hole 14 and suddenly he had a two-shot lead. That extended to three after a delightful chip over a bunker at the 16th led to another birdie.

Two closing pars sealed the championship as Schauffele became the first golfer to win two majors in a single season since Brooks Koepka in 2018.

Lawrence, bidding to join a high-profile list of South Africans to have lifted the Claret Jug including Gary Player, Ernie Els and Bobby Locke, had held a one-shot lead at the turn.

<h2>- Scheffler, Rahm thwarted -</h2>

Rose, chasing his second major title and England's first Open victory since Nick Faldo in 1992, briefly enjoyed a share of the lead with Lawrence after hitting three birdies in his opening nine holes.

But he bogeyed twelve before too-little-too-late birdies on 16 and 18 put him on seven-under.&nbsp;

America's Horschel suffered an inconsistent opening ten holes before birdieing the last three to finished tied for second with Rose.

Lawrence finished on his own in fourth at six under, while American Russell Henley was a shot further back in fifth.

Ireland's Shane Lowry, leader after two rounds, posted a 68 to finish four-under par and in sixth place.

World number one Scottie Scheffler and two-time major champion Jon Rahm both briefly threatened a run up the leaderboard but finished tied for seventh on one under alongside South Korea's Im Sung-jae.

Unheralded Englishman Daniel Brown, playing his first major, posted a three-over-par round of 74 for a tie for 10th.

A number of stars struggled this week due to the testing weather conditions, thick rough and well-placed punitive pot bunkers.

Rory McIlroy endured two miserable rounds to miss the cut on 11 over, extending his decade-long wait for a fifth major into 2025.

Three-time champion Tiger Woods also missed the weekend, recording his worst-ever performance at the Open with a 14-over score of 156.

US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark and Viktor Hovland also failed to make the final two rounds.

Home favourite Robert MacIntyre finished nine over after failing to repeat the heroics that secured last week's Scottish Open.

"Hearing your name called with 'Open champion' after it is something I've dreamed of for a very long time." Schauffele had started the last 18 tied for second with five other players, a shot behind overnight leader Horschel. - Scheffler, Rahm thwarted - Rose, chasing his second major title and England's first Open victory since Nick Faldo in 1992, briefly enjoyed a share of the lead with Lawrence after hitting three birdies in his opening nine holes. But he bogeyed twelve before too-little-too-late birdies on 16 and 18 put him on seven-under. America's Horschel suffered an inconsistent opening ten holes before birdieing the last three to finished tied for second with Rose. Golf: American Xander Schauffele wins The Open for second major win

Tiger Woods had little good to say about his disastrous eight-over-par first round at the British Open on Thursday, as the Royal Troon course took a toll on the three-times winner. The American recorded six bogeys, two double bogeys and a two birdies in a round of 79 and admitted his lack of playing time may have impacted his performance.

"As the year has gone on, I have gotten better. I just wish I could have played a little bit more, but I've been saving it for the majors," said Woods, who has kept a limited schedule after a 2021 car crash. "Hopefully, next year will be a little bit better than this year."

Woods made a good start as he drained a long birdie putt on the par-four third to wild cheers from the crowd. The round quickly unravelled, however, as the 15-times major champion bogeyed the par-five fourth and landed in the bunker en route to a double bogey at the fifth before two more bogeys on the front nine.

A single birdie on the back nine did little to help as Woods landed in the bushes to double bogey the sixth and bogeyed the 12th before finishing with two more bogeys.

"I didn't do a whole lot of things right today. I made that putt on the third hole, and then I think I had, what, three 3-putts today. I didn't hit my irons very close, and I didn't give myself a whole lot of looks today," Woods told reporters.

"I need to shoot something in the mid-60s tomorrow to get something going on the weekend." The 48-year-old said this week he would continue playing for as long as he believes he is able to win. "I thought I could play a little bit more earlier in the year. I was a little bit too optimistic. I need to do a lot more work in the gym and keep progressing like we have," he said.

Golf: Tiger Woods tries to say positive after poor start in British Open

The list of potential winners of this week's British Open at Royal Troon is a long one as Rory McIlroy begins his latest bid to end a decade-long major title drought. McIlroy's misery continued in last month's U.S. Open where he agonisingly finished second,&nbsp;one shot behind American Bryson DeChambeau, after bogeying three of his last four holes.

The pain of that loss took McIlroy a few days to process,&nbsp;but now&nbsp;as he prepares for Thursday's opening round, he is feeling no added pressure in his quest to claim a fifth career major.

"I know that I'm in a good spot," the Northern Irish world number two told reporters on Tuesday after playing his first practice round of the week. "If I think about 2015 through 2020, that five-year stretch, I seldom had a realistic chance to win a major championship in that five-year period. So I'd much rather have these close calls. It means that I'm getting closer."

McIlroy, who has not won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship, spoke about how he dealt with the U.S. Open.

"I went from being very disappointed and dejected to trying to focus on the positives&nbsp;to then wanting to learn from the negatives, and then getting to the point where you become enthusiastic and motivated to go again," said the 35-year-old.

"It's funny how your mindset can go from 'I don't want to see a&nbsp;golf&nbsp;course for a month' to four days later being 'I can't wait to get another shot at it.' When that disappointment turns to motivation, that's when it's time to go again."

McIlroy is in good form having tied for fourth at last week's Scottish Open. "I feel like my preparations have been going well," he said. "Just getting myself familiar again with links conditions, links turf, green speeds. We play a majority of our&nbsp;golf&nbsp;in the States and green surfaces that are quite different to here."

<h2>FICKLE NATURE</h2>

The Open is the oldest of the four majors and often the most unpredictable, given the vagaries of the weather and the fickle nature of links&nbsp;golf. This year's championship, the 152nd edition, promises to be wide open with a host of players looming as genuine contenders.

American world number one and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, seeking his third major title, always seems to be in contention. "I'm excited," said Scheffler, who has won six times on the PGA Tour this year in 15 starts. "Excited to be back over here this year, and excited for the week. I think the&nbsp;golf&nbsp;course is great. We should get some good wind this week ... which increases the challenge of this&nbsp;golf&nbsp;course. It should be fun."

Ninth-ranked DeChambeau has played better than anyone in this year's majors, having tied for sixth at the Masters and finished second at the PGA Championship before winning his second U.S. Open crown last month.

"I'm very confident, obviously," said DeChambeau. "It all depends if I'm striking it well. I can come in here with the most confidence, obviously, off of a major championship win. Played decent last week, as well. "I know how to get the job done. It's just a matter of if I'm as consistent as I was at the U.S. Open last month and a few other venues as well. If I can play the&nbsp;golf&nbsp;that I have been, I think I'll give myself a great chance."

Other likely contenders include PGA Championship winner and world number three Xander Schauffele, fourth-ranked Swede Ludvig Aberg, 2021 Open champion Collin Morikawa and twice major winner Jon Rahm. American left-hander Brian Harman, the defending champion and world number 13, is not among the favourites, just like last year at Hoylake where he won by six shots.

Royal Troon, situated next to the Irish Sea, will provide a tough test. The Ayrshire layout has one of the most difficult closing stretches in championship&nbsp;golf, and eight of the last nine holes play into the prevailing wind.

This year's tournament features the longest hole in Open history. The sixth was 601 yards when the event was last played on the Ayrshire links in 2016 but this year it will measure 623 yards. Overall, the course will play 195 yards longer than in 2016 when Sweden's Henrik Stenson held off American Phil Mickelson in one of the greatest final-round duels in Open history.

British Open: Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau loom over Rory McIlroy bid for major redemption

Rory McIlroy said on Tuesday that he prefers to have "close calls" than not be in contention as he prepares for his latest tilt at a first major title since 2014 at this week's British Open.

The four-time major champion blew a golden opportunity to end his decade-long drought at last month's US Open, when he missed short putts on the 16th and 18th holes before losing to Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke.

McIlroy took a short break from the sport after that agonising near-miss before returning at the Scottish Open, where he finished tied-fourth on Sunday.

"I know that I'm in a good spot," McIlroy told reporters.

"I'd love to be able to get one over the line, but as soon as I do that, people are going to say, 'Well, when are you going to win your sixth?' So it's never ending."

The Northern Irishman has posted 21 top-10 finishes at majors since his last title at one of golf's four biggest tournaments -- the 2014 USPGA Championship.

McIlroy's effort at Pinehurst was his second successive runner-up finish at the US Open.

McIlroy will again be among the favourites when the first round at Royal Troon tees off on Thursday.

The 35-year-old said he missed a supportive message from Tiger Woods following the US Open after changing his phone number.

"Full disclosure, I changed my number two days after the US Open so I didn't get it until he told me about it today," McIlroy added.

"I was like, 'Oh, thanks very much'. So I blanked Tiger Woods, which is probably not a good thing.

"Tiger has been nothing but incredible to me over the course of my career in the good moments and the bad."

McIlroy will play alongside Max Homa and Tyrrell Hatton for the first two rounds.

Golf: Rory McIlroy okay to have 'close calls' despite US Open heartbreak

Rory McIlroy put his US Open heartbreak behind him when he made an impressive start to the defence of his Scottish Open title on Thursday.

The Northern Irishman carded a five-under-par 65 to sit just a shot off the first round clubhouse lead shared by Germany's Max Kieffer and Li Haotong of China.

"I'm not going to let three or four holes cloud my judgement in terms of how good I'm playing," 35-year-old McIlroy said.

McIlroy is competing for the first time since agonisingly missing out on a fifth major title at the US Open.

He held a two-shot lead with five holes to play at Pinehurst but bogeyed three of the last four before finishing a shot behind Bryson DeChambeau.

The devastating loss left McIlroy still looking to add to his last major which he won in 2014.

However, the 35-year-old insisted his game is in good shape ahead of the British Open at Royal Troon next week.

"I played well at the Canadian Open and at Memorial and the US PGA and Quail Hollow. My game has been in good shape and it was in good shape coming in here," said McIlroy.

"It's just a matter of going out there and focusing on the task at hand and not letting your mind wander too much. I felt like I did a good job of that today."

World number two McIlroy chipped in for an eagle on the third hole, his 12th of the day, and also recorded five birdies, but missed good chances on three of his last five holes.

"I hit a couple of shots over the first few holes that I haven't seen in practice over the last 10 days so it was a bit of a reminder that golf isn't as easy as sometimes I think it is," McIlroy said.

"But then I really started to feel good. Especially on the front nine, our back nine, I started to hit some good drives, some good iron shots."

Other star names taking part at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick include PGA Championship winner and 2022 Scottish Open champion Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa and Ludvig Aberg.

Golf: Rory McIlroy buries US Open misery with impressive start at Scotland Open

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev, who recently got appointed as the president of the&nbsp;Professional Golf Tour of India, has backed golfer Aditi Ashok to return with a medal in the forthcoming Paris Olympics 2024 edition. The marquee tournament kicks off later this month and all eyes are on Aditi, who finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics and won the hearts of countrymen.

Talking to PTI Videos, India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil said, "I want to see Aditi playing with the same pomp that she played with in the Tokyo Olympics. For cricketers and golfers, form is very important. If Aditi plays in the same form, she has a good chance to win a medal. And if she has a bad week, then she can only sit out and rue the loss."

Kapil further opined that there was a severe dearth of quality international-level golf courses in India. The veteran, who has been playing on the PGTI circuit for&nbsp;years, mentioned, "In India, there is a catch-22 situation. You have to have good golf courses up to international standards with top tournaments and people playing golf in tougher conditions and scoring well. Some of the courses in India have to improve also and give the players to play in decent courses."

He further stated, "I have seen playing 20 under 19 under 18 under but conditions may not be as good as we would like to have. Somebody who has played in DLF Gurgaon or Oxford, and hit 15 or 20 under, then you can say that's the different level you have played."

Kapil also shared his vision and priorities after assuming office as PGTI president. He said, "My first vision is to bring money to golf and more golf to the players. At the moment they play 15 or 20 weeks a year if we can make it 30-35 weeks a year... that's the vision."

"The only way it can come is if more sponsors come. So I would like more tours and tournaments to take place. I will open the door for many companies and the corporate world to come out and promote golf," the ex-cricketer highlighted.

He further added, "Golf is slightly different because every person has to earn his own money. In cricket, the Board decides the fees. Start talking to the Corporate world if they can come and organise more golf tournaments. That's the immediate plan. I am not the lone golfer who played the game. I can't say I am the one who will lead it. Yes, I will try and help a lot of golfers in the country and bring more corporates into the game."

Talking about Aditi, she has had her share of ups and downs but remains India's best bet to win a medal in golf during the upcoming Olympics. In Tokyo 2020, she&nbsp;finished a stroke behind the bronze medallist Lydia Ko and was only&nbsp;two strokes behind gold winner Nelly Korda. This time around, the 26-year-old will be eager to use her past experience and return with her&nbsp;maiden Olympic medal in Paris.

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev, who recently got appointed as the president of the Professional Golf Tour of India, has backed golfer Aditi Ashok to return with a medal in the forthcoming Paris Olympics 2024 edition. And if she has a bad week, then she can only sit out and rue the loss." Kapil further opined that there was a severe dearth of quality international-level golf courses in India. The veteran, who has been playing on the PGTI circuit for years, mentioned, "In India, there is a catch-22 situation. You have to have good golf courses up to international standards with top tournaments and people playing golf in tougher conditions and scoring well. Some of the courses in India have to improve also and give the players to play in decent courses." He further stated, "I have seen playing 20 under 19 under 18 under but conditions may not be as good as we would like to have. Somebody who has played in DLF Gurgaon or Oxford, and hit 15 or 20 under, then you can say that's the different level you have played." Also read: 'He is very...' Lexi Thompson birdied the first three holes on her way to firing a four-under par 68, clinging to a one-stroke lead after Thursday's first round of the Women's PGA Championship. The 29-year-old American, who announced last month this will be her final LPGA season, was one shot ahead of top-ranked compatriot Nelly Korda and Thailand's Patty Tavatanakit after 18 holes at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington.

"It was overall just a great day," Thompson said. "I played solid golf. Had a good start so I tried to just keep on rolling with that. There are a lot of tough holes out there. I felt very comfortable."

Thompson, a runner-up last week, credits her solid play to swing changes not her retirement revelation. "I kind of clicked onto something with my golf swing, just trying to simplify things," she said. "I don't think that has anything to do with announcing what I did. It's just a matter of being comfortable and playing free-swinging Lexi I guess."

Reigning Olympic champion Korda, seeking her third major victory, reeled off three consecutive birdies at one stretch to stay near the top. "Overall I think it was a really good day," Korda said. "This golf course is so tough. It's critical to hit the fairway. It's so demanding off the tee so anything under par is a good score."

Tavatanakit won her only major at the 2021 ANA Inspiration but won two other titles this past February in Saudi Arabia and Thailand and had a bogey-free round.

"I feel like I wasn't chasing perfection out there," she said. "I could come out naturally and be a free golfer out there. I found something out there. It worked out great."

A pack on 70 included England's Charley Hull, Ireland's Leona Maguire, France's Celine Boutier and Japan's Hinako Shibuno.

Thompson has not won any title since the 2022 Ladies European Tour event in New York and hasn't won an LPGA event since capturing her 11th at the 2019 ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Thompson, who won her only major title at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship, sank a four-foot putt to birdie the first and five-footers at the par-5 second and par-4 third. She closed the front nine with a six-foot birdie putt and after a bogey at 10 added birdies from about 14 feet at 12 and 12 feet at 14. But she found a greenside bunker at 16 and made bogey.

<h2>- Korda keeps the faith -</h2>

Korda has won six LPGA titles this season, including her second career major crown at April's Chevron Championship in Texas, and last month's Americas Open for a sixth win in seven starts.

But she missed the cut at the US Women's Open and last week's LPGA Meijer Classic and has been trying to recapture her top form with another major trophy at stake.

"That's just golf," Korda said. "It's just such a roller coaster. Life is as well but I feel like out here you get a couple bad breaks and you're not playing the weekend and you can get really down on yourself. "You have to have faith and you have to keep working hard then pick a game plan and start fresh every week."

Korda has refocused on the one-shot-at-a-time attitude that was at the core of her win streak. "You have to give the shot right in front of you, ahead of you, 100% attention and that's what I've been trying to focus on this week -- stay very present and not get too ahead of myself," she said.

Tavatanakit sank a 25-foot birdie putt at the first hole, made another from just inside 10 feet at the par-5 sixth and holed a putt from just beyond 18 feet to birdie the par-4 ninth.

"A lot of commitment and trust, hit my shot with full energy and just pray," she said.

PGA Tour has decided to recognise former world no. 1 golfer Tiger Woods for his "exceptional lifetime achievement." This means that Woods will be given sponsor exemption in Signature events of PGA Tour going forward.

The Sentry, AT&amp;T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, Memorial Tournament and upcoming Travelers Championship are the eight Signature Events on the 2024 PGA Tour schedule.

Woods, a 15-time major winner and 82-time PGA Tour winner, is now automatically eligible for all the Signature events on PGA Tour's annual schedule.

“An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80 [plus] career wins,” read the PGA Tour memo on Tuesday (June 18).

Since his car accident in 2021, Woods, now aged 48, has spent limited time on the course. He has, however, played in all majors since making a comeback in 2022 along with Genesis Invitational - one of the three player-hosted events among eight Signature events of PGA Tour.&nbsp;

It is to be noted that Woods hosts the Genesis Invitational.

The Signature events have smaller fields, FedEx Cup points and higher prize money, especially in player-hosted events.

Apart from the Genesis, &nbsp;Arnold Palmer and Memorial Tournament are the other two player-hosted events with prize money of 20 per cent to the winner compared to 18 per cent in rest of the five events.

Woods had to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational in February earlier this year due to illness. He followed it up with a 60th-place finish at the Masters.

In the next two majors, that is, PGA Championship and recently-concluded US Open, he failed to make the cut.

Woods is now expected to feature in next month's Open championship at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland.

Rory McIlroy may be one of golf's biggest draws but he is doing the right thing by taking some time away from the game following his stunning collapse at the U.S. Open, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said on Wednesday.

McIlroy threw away a chance to end a decade-long search for his fifth major with three bogeys in his final four holes at the U.S. Open and a day later said he needed time away to process everything that had happened.

Monahan, speaking to reporters at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut ahead of this week's Travelers Championship - a PGA Tour Signature Event featuring a loaded and limited field - said he has texted with McIlroy since Sunday's wild finish to the U.S. Open and respects his decision.

"Sometimes you just need to focus on what you need," said Monahan. "And that's what he's doing and that's exactly what he should be doing because that's what he thinks is the right path."

McIlroy began the day three shots back of 54-hole leader Bryson DeChambeau but put himself in prime position and had a two-shot lead with five holes to play, a stretch where he made three bogeys, including two where he missed putts from inside of four feet.

The Northern Irishman left the site of the U.S. Open without speaking to media but a day later announced his decision to take a break from golf and get himself ready for his title defense at the July 11-14 Scottish Open.

Despite the absence of world number two McIlroy this week, Monahan is excited at the players in Cromwell and expects an exciting week given a field that includes a slew of big names, including Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.

"We're at a Signature Event, you look at the quality of the field that we have this week, we're going to have a great Travelers Championship and looking forward to getting Rory back in Scotland," said Monahan.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan says Rory McIlroy break 'exactly' what he should do

Ace golfer Rory McIlroy is taking time off from the sport. His comments came a day after he came excruciatingly close to winning his fifth major at the 2024 US Open. The golfer eventually lost the title to Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke.

"I’m going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon," McIlroy said in a statement.

He acknowledged that the loss on final day of the tournament was "probably the toughest I’ve had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer."

McIlroy, however, showed game spirit and congratulated winner DeChambeau, saying: "He is a worthy champion and exactly what professional golf needs right now. I think we can all agree on that."

The golfer also spoke about his campaign and conceded that he'll rue a few things.

"As I reflect on my week, I’ll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the 2 missed putts on 16 and 18 and on the final day. But, as I always try to do, I’ll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives.

"As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have. The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient. I’ve shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again," he added.

McIlroy is now expected to feature at Scottish Open from July 11-14 before featuring at final major of the year - British Open from July 17-21.

He has previously won the British Open in 2014. His other major victories are 2011 US Open and PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014.

The golfer eventually lost the title to Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke. "I’m going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon," McIlroy said in a statement. Rory McIlroy to 'take time off' from golf after heartbreaking one-stroke loss at US Open

Bryson DeChambeau captured his second US Open title on Sunday, but it was an epic late collapse by a gutted Rory McIlroy that will be remembered from the thrilling showdown at Pinehurst.

Overtaken by McIlroy with six holes remaining to play, DeChambeau kept his poise over the dome-shaped greens and sandy waste areas of Pinehurst to rally for the crown.

McIlroy, thwarted in a bid to end a 10-year major win drought, led by two strokes with five holes to play.

But the four-time major winner from Northern Ireland made bogeys on three of the last four holes -- two on short par putts at 16 and 18 -- to help hand DeChambeau the trophy.

"I still can't believe it," said DeChambeau. "It's unbelievable."

DeChambeau, who also won the 2020 US Open, fired a one-over-par 71 to finish on six-under-par 274 while McIlroy shot 69 to stand on 275 after 72 holes.

In addition to taking the $4.3 million winner's prize from a record $21.5 million purse, DeChambeau will jump from 38th to 10th in the next world rankings and have five more years of starts in all majors.

In a collapse mindful of Greg Norman's epic 1996 last-round loss to Nick Faldo at the Masters, McIlroy missed par putts from 2.5 feet at the par-4 16th and just inside four feet at the par-4 18th -- tension-packed bogeys that left McIlroy one behind in the thriller.

"Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special," DeChambeau said of McIlroy, who left the course without speaking to media after his agonising collapse.

"For him to miss that putt (at 18), I'd never wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way," DeChambeau added.

<h2>'Best shot of my life'</h2>

DeChambeau found dirt and weeds left and a bunker at 18 but blasted his third shot to four feet and sank his pressure-packed putt for the victory.

"I was not great today but I got out of trouble really well and then, man, I can't believe that up and down the last -- that was All-World, probably the best shot of my life."

Raising his arms in triumph, DeChambeau screamed and jumped for joy, then paid tribute to the late Payne Stewart, the 1999 US Open winner at Pinehurst who died only a few months later.

"That's Payne right there, baby," DeChambeau said into a television camera, pointing to a pin of Stewart on his cap.

The 30-year-old American became the second active player of Saudi-backed LIV Golf to win a major title after Brooks Koepka in the 2023 PGA Championship.

It was the sixth consecutive win by an American in a major since Spain's Jon Rahm took last year's Masters.

Americans Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay shared third on 276, two off the pace, with Finau firing a 67. France's Matthieu Pavon was fifth on 277 after a 71, one stroke ahead of Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, who fired a 70 to stand on 278.

DeChambeau answered bogeys at the fourth and 12th holes with birdies at the par-5 10th and par-4 13th to keep the pressure on McIlroy until he cracked.

"I felt like I was hitting the driver pretty well. It just wasn't starting exactly where I wanted to hit to," DeChambeau said. "Ultimately on 13 I knew I had to make birdie there to give myself a chance, because Rory was going on a heater.

"He slipped up a couple on the way coming in and I just kept staying the course, focused on trying to do as many fairways as I could."

McIlroy settled for his second US Open runner-up effort in a row and his 21st top-10 finish since last winning a major at the 2014 PGA Championship.

DeChambeau suffered his first three-putt bogey of the tournament, lipping out a four-foot par putt at the par-3 15th to fall one back, only for McIlroy to botch his short putts, his only misses of the day inside five feet.

Pavon failed in his bid to become the second Frenchman to win a major title after Arnaud Massy at the 1907 British Open.

World number one Scottie Scheffler, the huge pre-tournament favorite, fired a two-over 72 to stand on eight-over 288 for what was only his second finish outside the top-10 this year.

"Didn't play my best. A bit frustrating to end," he said. "I definitely need to do some things better."

Golf: Bryson DeChambeau eclipses Rory McIlroy to win second US Open title

Second-round action at the U.S. Open got underway at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina on Friday with overnight co-leader Rory McIlroy heading out early with hopes of inching closer to an elusive fifth major title. The Northern Irishman, whose last major triumph came at the PGA Championship in August 2014, finished the first round level with Patrick Cantlay at five under and was set to tee off at 7:29 a.m. ET (1129 GMT) from Pinehurst No. 2's 10th hole.

Clear skies greeted the early starters on what was expected to be a steamy day with temperatures reaching 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34.4 Celsius). McIlroy will be filled with confidence after opening with a bogey-free 65. The last three times McIlroy opened with a bogey-free round in a major, he won (2014 British Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2011 U.S. Open).

World number three McIlroy will play with reigning Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who finished the first round six shots behind in a share of 34th place, and PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele, who is five back and tied for 16th.

Cantlay, who closed his opening round with three birdies over his final five holes to set the early pace and earned his first share of the lead after any round of a major, will head out at 1:25 p.m. from the first tee.

Ludvig Aberg, the Swedish sensation who finished runner-up at the Masters and is making his U.S. Open debut this week, is one shot behind the co-leaders and will be following Cantlay's threesome around the course.

DeChambeau, who won the 2020 U.S. Open, will head out in the sixth group from the first tee while Pavon will set off with the late starters on the back nine.

DeChambeau is one of four players to finish inside the top 10 in the first two major championships of the year, including at last month's PGA Championship where he was one shot shy of forcing a playoff with Schauffele.

Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica have called off their divorce and are looking forward to "a new beginning", the golfer told The Guardian newspaper on Tuesday.

Aditi Ashok's consistency over four rounds at the Tokyo Olympics nearly proved enough to clinch an unlikely podium spot, and the 26-year-old believes she needs to rediscover it if she hopes to go a step further and win a medal at this year's Paris Games. Ashok came fourth and missed out on a medal in Tokyo by a stroke after being in contention right to the finish. She has gone from strength to strength since then and had a promising 2023, recording five top-10 finishes on the LPGA circuit to rise to a year-end ranking of 42.

"I feel I've gotten better with all aspects of my game," Ashok said in an interview with Sports Authority of India (SAI) media. "2023 especially was a great year performance-wise and that's because I managed to pick up some distance in the off season last year. I would say winning a medal is pretty high up there in terms of career achievements..."

In 2024, Ashok's form has been more mixed, but with several events left on the calendar before the Aug. 7-10 women's Olympic&nbsp;golf&nbsp;tournament begins at Le&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;National, Ashok still has time to find her groove.

"My results have been average. I have played good in streaks but not for all four days. I do feel I'm playing well so I'm looking forward to the summer events leading up to the Olympics...," Ashok said. "I'm looking at each event with the same importance and trying to do my best for all four days each week. That should get me in a good frame of mind and routine before the games and hopefully that will be enough at Paris."

Ashok will also be keen to bury the disappointment of missing out on a gold medal at last year's Asian Games, in which she lost a seven-shot lead in a final-day meltdown to finish second behind Thailand's Arpichaya Yubol.

"I think I played some of my best&nbsp;golf&nbsp;in Tokyo. I gained a lot of confidence I would say and not much learning," Ashok said. "With the Asian Games I played one of my worst rounds of the year on the final day. Which was after the best round of my life on the third day. So sometimes you fail and there's no reason as to why."

Ace golfer Scottie Scheffler has said that he holds 'no ill will' toward office Bryan Gillis who had arrested him at the PAG Championship earlier this month. Scheffler's comments came after a Kentucky, USA prosecutor dropped all four criminal charges against him on Wednesday (May 29).

"I hold no ill will toward Officer [Bryan] Gillis. I wish to put this incident behind me and move on, and I hope he will do the same," Scheffler wrote on&nbsp;Instagram.

"Police officers have a difficult job and I hold them in high regard. This was a severe miscommunication in a chaotic situation," he added.

Scheffler was facing four criminal charges including felony for a second degree assault on a police officer while trying to enter the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. The incident happened in the wee hours on May 17 - the day of his second round of&nbsp;PGA Championship.&nbsp;

Responding to the charges, the Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell &nbsp;prosecutor said: "Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler."

The decision to drop charges may have been partly due to the information released by police in the matter. The Louisville Metropolitan Police department had held a press conference to inform that police officer, Bryan Gillis, who was involved in the incident, was also suspended.

Gillis was not wearing the body-cam at the time of Scheffler's arrest. The publicly-released footage of the incident also didn't show Scheffler dragging the police officer as mentioned in the initial report.

Police footage, including one taken by a street pole camera that shows Scheffler's vehicle slowly turn into Valhalla before an officer runs towards it and strikes it as it comes to a stop.

Scheffler, however, released on bail after his arrest in time to make it for the tee time in the second round. He eventually finished eighth in the tournament.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer.

The officer continuously reaches into the window of the driver's seat before the door opens and Scheffler emerges. The vehicle did not move once the officer began interacting with it.

The officer who arrested world number one golfer Scottie Scheffler last week has been disciplined for not activating his body-worn camera during the incident, Louisville police said on Thursday. Scheffler was arrested ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship on Friday in Louisville, Kentucky after he tried to drive around traffic congestion outside Valhalla Golf Club which was caused by a fatal accident in the area that morning.

Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said arresting officer Bryan Gillis has received corrective action for not turning on his body-worn camera. "This corrective action has been notated on a performance observation form which is in line with our disciplinary protocol and practices," said Gwinn-Villaroel. "We respect the judicial process and we will allow the courts to proceed accordingly."

Scheffler, the pre-tournament favourite when he arrived at Valhalla, was five shots off the lead before being arrested over what he said was a misunderstanding with traffic flow. According to the arrest report, Scheffler "refused to comply and accelerated forward", dragging Gillis to the ground. The officer was taken to hospital after suffering pain, swelling and abrasions to his wrist and knee.

Police also released video footage on Thursday, including one taken by a street pole camera that shows Scheffler's vehicle slowly turn into Valhalla before an officer runs towards it and strikes it as it comes to a stop.

The officer continuously reaches into the window of the driver's seat before the door opens and Scheffler emerges. The vehicle did not move once the officer began interacting with it.

A second video from a police vehicle dashcam shows Scheffler being escorted from the scene in handcuffs. Neither video shows an officer being dragged to the ground as described in the arrest report.

Louisville police also released a form in which Gillis had to explain why he did not record the incident. "While directing traffic in front of Gate 1 the PGA personnel stopped a bus from entering Gate 1," Gillis wrote. "I observed a vehicle traveling in the opposing lanes coming at me.

"I stopped the driver and advised him he could not proceed because of the bus. He demanded to be let in and proceeded forward against my directions. I was dragged/knocked down by the driver. I then proceeded to arrest the driver."

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. He was released from jail in time to make his second round tee time.

Scheffler, who finished in a share of eighth place at the PGA Championship, is due in a Louisville court for his rescheduled arraignment on June 3.
