World number one Scottie Scheffler's arraignment on multiple charges stemming from a traffic incident at the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, has been delayed until June 3, ESPN reported Monday.

The arraignment had been scheduled for Tuesday, with Scheffler's attorney Steve Romines saying at the weekend the 27-year-old would "be pleading not guilty" to charges of felony assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

Romines, who told The Golf Channel that Scheffler and his team were "not interested in any sort of settlement negotiations or anything," told ESPN the arraignment was postponed because of a conflict in his schedule.

Louisville Metropolitan Police Department (LMPD) officers handcuffed Scheffler before arresting him on Friday morning outside Valhalla Golf Club after he tried to go around a traffic jam as police investigated an earlier fatal accident.

Police said Scheffler's vehicle accelerated and dragged a police officer, who had injuries that required hospital treatment.

Romines said Scheffler stopped when he was directed to and Scheffler said the situation was that the situation was "a huge misunderstanding".

Scheffler was released in time to play the second round and finished the PGA Championship in a four-way tie for eighth place.

He said Sunday that the seriousness of his situation hit him on Saturday morning.

"Obviously the results weren't what I was hoping for at the beginning of the week, but overall I'm proud of how I fought this week," Scheffler said.

Scheffler arrived in Louisville having won four of his past five starts, including a second Masters title last month.

Last week he and his wife, Meredith, welcomed the birth of their first child, a son named Bennett.

He is scheduled to play the US PGA Tour event at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas, this week.

Xander Schauffele outdueled Bryson DeChambeau down the back nine on Sunday to win the PGA Championship, capturing his first major triumph with the lowest score in major history.

Third-ranked Schauffele sank a tension-packed six-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole at Valhalla for a one-stroke victory over DeChambeau to snap a two-year victory drought.

"I was actually kind of emotional after the putt lipped in," said Schauffele. "It has been a while since I've won.

"I kept saying it all week. I just need to stay in my lane. And man, was it hard to stay in my lane today. But I tried all day to just keep focus on what I'm trying to do."

Schauffele, who had 12 prior top-10 major finishes without a victory, had not won an event since the 2022 Scottish Open, having had 19 top-10 PGA Tour finishes during his drought.

But he matched the lowest round in major history with a nine-under 62 on Thursday and was equal to the challenge on Sunday.

The reigning Olympic champion fired a six-under par 65 and finished 72 holes on 21-under 263 to edge fellow American DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open champion.

Schauffele broke the old 72-hole record low under-par winning score of 20-under, done four times, most recently by Australian Cameron Smith at the 2022 British Open.

Victory was worth $3.33 million to Schauffele from an $18.5 million purse while DeChambeau took home $1.998 million.

"Proud of Xander for finally getting the job done," DeChambeau said. He's an amazing golfer and well deserved major champion now.

"On my side of the coin, disappointing. I played well. Shot 20-under par in a major championship. Proud of myself for the way I handled adversity. Definitely disappointing, but one that gives me a lot of momentum for the rest of the majors."

DeChambeau closed with a 64 while Norway's Victor Hovland, last year's PGA runner-up, was third on 266 after shooting a 66.

Belgium's Thomas Detry fired a 66 to share fourth on 269 with Collin Morikawa, the 54-hole co-leader who made 16 pars in shooting 71. England's Justin Rose and Ireland's Shane Lowry shared sixth on 270.

DeChambeau rolled in a birdie putt from just beyond 10 feet at the par-5 18th hole, the ball barely dropping in, to match Schauffele for the lead at 20-under.

Seconds later, Hovland missed his 10-foot birdie putt to doom his chances and ended up making a bogey.

Schauffele's tee shot at 18 was in the left rough on the edge of a fairway bunker.&nbsp; He calmly blasted his second shot 36 yards from the hole in the fairway short of the green and dropped his approach six feet from the hole.

The ball made a slight roll on the edge as it fell in to give him a wire-to-wire triumph, counting shared leads.

Not since 2005 Phil Mickelson at Baltusrol had a player birdied the 72nd hole to win the Wanamaker Trophy.

"I just told myself this is my opportunity and just capture it," Schauffele said.

He put past defeats in perspective with a text from his father -- a steady drip breaks the rock.

"That's actually what my dad texted me," Schauffele said. In German though. I had to ask him what the translation was."

Hovland, last year's FedEx Cup playoff champion and PGA runner-up, was denied his first major title.

DeChambeau, the top finisher among 16 LIV Golf entrants, led the field in driving distance.

<h2>Scheffler shares 8th</h2>

World number one Scottie Scheffler fired a 65 to finish on 271 and share eighth with fellow Americans Justin Thomas and Billy Horschel.

He had his first over-par round of the year on Saturday, a day after being arrested and jailed after a traffic incident at the entrance to Valhalla.

"I'm proud of how I fought," he said. "Kind of running on fumes."

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland shot 67 to finish on 272. Second-ranked McIlroy has not won a major since 2014 at Valhalla but has since had 20 top-10 major finishes.

American Jordan Spieth, trying to win to complete a career Grand Slam, fired a 73 to finish on 278.

Golf: Xander Schauffele birdies final hole to capture PGA Championship for first major win

Golf world number one Scottie Scheffler was handcuffed and arrested on Friday after allegedly dragging a police officer with his car while trying to avoid traffic controls outside the PGA Championship at Valhalla. In one of the strangest scenes ever at a major tournament, Scheffler was taken into custody by police, booked with a mugshot taken in an orange jumpsuit, released, returned to the course in time for his second round, then recovered well enough to fire a five-under par 66 and share third early in the second round.

"I still feel like my head is spinning a little bit but I was fortunate to be able to make it back out and play some golf," Scheffler said. "I've kept myself in the tournament now with a pretty chaotic day."

Scheffler, 27, was charged with felony assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic and released.

"My situation will get handled," Scheffler said. "I can't comment on any of the specifics, but it was just a huge misunderstanding that will get resolved I think fairly quickly."

Scheffler was detained by Louisville Metro police after he drove onto curbing trying to get around a prior accident at the Valhalla entrance, one that resulted in the fatality of a pedestrian named as John Mills.

"My sympathies go out to the family of Mr. Mills," Scheffler said. "I can't imagine what they're going through."

A police report on the incident obtained by ESPN said arresting officer Bryan Gillis says Scheffler disobeyed orders to stop his car and accelerated, dragging the officer to the ground.

Gillis was hospitalized with pain, bruising and swelling in his left wrist and knee. An arraignment is set for Tuesday.

"I never intended to disregard any of the instructions," Scheffler said in a statement before his round.

Scheffler, who won his second Masters title last month, arrived at Valhalla just under an hour before his start time in the second round, which began after an 80-minute delay due to the accident.

"We were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus," the PGA of America said in a statement. "This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship."

The PGA of America later identified Mills and said of Scheffler, "We're fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place."

<h2>- 'I was pretty rattled' -</h2>

Scheffler was driven from jail, by the owner of Valhalla Golf Club according to ESPN, to the clubhouse, where he ate breakfast before a practice range visit.

"I was pretty rattled to say the least," Scheffler said. "I was shaking. I would say in shock and in fear. Coming out here and trying to play today was definitely a challenge, but I did my best.

"It probably took a few holes to feel normal."

Fans cheered as Scheffler walked onto the course and gave him a huge ovation just before his first shot landed in the right rough on his way to an opening birdie.

"Fans were tremendous today," Scheffler said.

Scheffler's mugshot was posted by the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections after he was booked. Some fans had it on T-shirts at the course.

"You felt like it was sort of a prank or something when you see a mugshot of Scottie," said tournament leader Xander Schauffele. "He's a solid guy and there was no malintent by him to anyone. So hopefully he goes out unscathed. Scottie's a good dude."

Scheffler has won four of his past five starts, capturing Bay Hill and the Players in March, losing in a playoff at the Houston Open, then winning the Masters and Heritage last month.

American Mark Hubbard, on 133 with Scheffler, was amazed at his performance.

"I saw as everybody did the mug shot and the police report," Hubbard said. "Unbelievable that he gets arrested and then goes out and shoots 66."

Scheffler was the feel-good story of the week, seeking a third major title a week after becoming a father. His wife, Meredith, gave birth to son Bennett nine days ago.

PGA Championship start delayed after man killed by shuttle bus; top golfer Scottie Scheffler detained briefly

A rampaging Xander Schauffele powered to the top of the PGA Championship leaderboard on Thursday, firing a record-equaling opening round nine-under 62 at Valhalla Golf Club, as the Olympic champion looked to atone for a shock loss at the Wells Fargo. Out with the early starters Schauffele set the target that no one in the 156-player field could match. Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala came the closest, returning six-under 65s to sit three back.

Not even the two hottest golfers on the planet, world number one Scottie Scheffler and number two Rory McIlroy, could muster a challenge on a day of ideal scoring conditions at the defenseless Valhalla Golf Club.

McIlroy, coming off back-to-back PGA Tour wins, turned in a scrappy five-under 66 to settle in four off the pace. New dad Scheffler, with four victories in his last five starts including a second Masters Green Jacket, lurks one further adrift after returning a 67.

Schauffele, who held a final round two-stroke lead at Quail Hollow on Sunday before losing by five shots to McIlroy, was a man on a mission in Louisville, matching the men's major championship low score for a second time.

Despite an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo and a proven ability to go low, the 30-year-old American has yet to win a major and is without a win since the 2022 Scottish Open.

While there is a lot of golf to be played, the world number three signaled he plans to end both droughts with a brilliant error-free opening round that matched his first round effort at last year's U.S. Open.

Only two other men have returned 62s at a major, Rickie Fowler, also in the first round at the 2023 U.S. Open, and Branden Grace, in the third round at the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

"I'll take a 62 in any major any day," said Schauffele. "Not winning makes you want to win more, as weird as that is. "The top feels far away, and I feel like I have a lot of work to do."

Coming off titles at the Zurich Open and Wells Fargo, McIlroy carried that momentum onto the first tee. He rolled in a six-footer for a birdie on his opening hole, the par five 10th, then picked up a second at the 13th to briefly join a crowd at the top of the leaderboard.

But the Northern Irishman, who announced on Monday that he had filed for divorce, stalled after the early burst. He took a bogey at the 17th before hitting his stride again after the turn by carding four birdies, including three straight from the fifth.

"Not a pretty 66," summed up McIlroy, who won the last of his four majors in 2014 on the same Valhalla layout. "I sort of felt like it was pretty scrappy for the most part. "I thought I got a lot out of my game today. "Not really happy with how I played but at least happy with the score."

After taking three weeks off to be with his wife, who was about to give birth, there were worries Scheffler would need time to shake off some competitive rust before returning to his dominating ways. He wasted no time dispelling those concerns, holing out from 167-yards on the par four first for an eagle and adding a birdie at the fourth to get to three-under.

But the 27-year-old American could not sustain that level, mixing three birdies with a pair of bogeys over the next 14 holes.

Defending champion and LIV Golf standard-bearer Brooks Koepka, bidding to become the tournament's first repeat winner since he retained the title in 2019, looked a threat to add a fourth Wanamaker trophy to his collection after returning a 67 highlighted by an eagle, birdie and par finish to join Scheffler in a group at four-under.

Tiger Woods, who collected one of his 15 major titles at Valhalla in 2000 with a playoff win over Bob May, opened with a one-over 72 but lamented a sloppy bogey, bogey finish to his day.

This is Woods' first event since the Masters. Last month the injury-ravaged golfer had earned a tournament-record 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National, although finishing last among those who played the weekend.

"It's just that I just don't play a whole lot of competitive rounds," said Woods. "I haven't played since the Masters. "So it's a little bit different than being at home and playing a flat Florida course."

"The top feels far away, and I feel like I have a lot of work to do." Coming off titles at the Zurich Open and Wells Fargo, McIlroy carried that momentum onto the first tee. He rolled in a six-footer for a birdie on his opening hole, the par five 10th, then picked up a second at the 13th to briefly join a crowd at the top of the leaderboard. Also read: Tennis: World no. 1 Iga Swiatek downs Coco Gauff in Rome Open semis But the Northern Irishman, who announced on Monday that he had filed for divorce, stalled after the early burst. "Not really happy with how I played but at least happy with the score." After taking three weeks off to be with his wife, who was about to give birth, there were worries Scheffler would need time to shake off some competitive rust before returning to his dominating ways.

Negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;backers the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) are progressing, Tiger Woods said on Tuesday, but with much work still ahead that could keep him from taking on the job of U.S. Ryder Cup captain. A director on the PGA Tour policy board that is trying to hammer out an agreement with the PIF, Woods has had a very full plate while preparing for this week's PGA Championship at the Valhalla&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;Club.

The 48-year-old, who also sits on the PGA Tour Enterprises board, has had to juggle several new business ventures along with the possibility of leading the U.S. against Europe when they host the Ryder Cup next year at Bethpage Black.

"We're still talking," said Woods, about the Ryder Cup. "There's nothing that has been confirmed yet, we're still working on what that might look like. "Also whether or not I have the time to do it, I need to feel that I can give the amount of time that it deserves.

"We're working on negotiations with PIF. It's ongoing; it's fluid; it changes day-to-day. We're making steps and it may not be giant steps, but we're making steps."

Negotiations appear to be reaching a crucial moment with Jimmy Dunne, one of the key architects of the initial framework agreement between the PGA Tour and PIF, announcing on Monday he was stepping away from the policy board citing no meaningful progress was being made towards a deal.

Last week, it was reported that one of the&nbsp;golf's leading voices Rory McIlroy had his return to the policy board blocked by a small group of players, including business partner Woods, who dismissed the idea of any friction as nothing more than a difference of opinion.

The feuding has resulted in a significant drop in viewership, raising red flags with broadcasters and PGA Tour headquarters.

"I don't like where it's going," said world number nine Max Homa. "It's got to be exhausting to be a casual&nbsp;golf&nbsp;fan at this point in time. "I don't know why you would want to hear about the business side of this game.

"So, yeah, it is troubling I hope at some point soon we can just get back to entertaining people and playing&nbsp;golf&nbsp;and seeing who shoots the lowest score and not talking about our Player Advisory Council. Golf: PGA Tour and LIV Golf negotiations could keep Tiger Woods from Ryder Cup post

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy return next week to Valhalla for the 106th PGA Championship, back on a course where each captured a dramatic major victory earlier in their careers.

Woods, a 15-time major champion, won a three-hole playoff over Bob May to take the 2000 PGA Championship, becoming the first golfer since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win three majors in the same year.

He went on to claim the 2001 Masters and complete the Tiger Slam feat of four consecutive major wins.

World number two McIlroy won the most recent of his four major titles in the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla, racing the darkness down the last hole to edge Phil Mickelson by a stroke.

"I think the guys up ahead were pretty unhappy with how it all unfolded," McIlroy recalled. "I got the result that I was looking for in the end and that's all that matters."

McIlroy stubbornly finished as nightfall descended after Mickelson, a group ahead, birdied to pull within one. McIlroy found a greenside bunker and saved par for the victory.

"I'm not a huge fan of conflict, but when push comes to shove, I will," McIlroy recalled. "That was one of those times when I needed to sort of assert my will on a situation.

"I think if I wasn't as pushy as I was, I would have had to sleep on that lead and on that tee shot overnight. I just didn't want to do that."

McIlroy has not won a major title in the decade since, but has posted 20 top-10 major finishes, including a runner-up showing at each of the other three majors.

The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland has stretched his PGA Tour win total from nine to 25 and his DP World Tour total from nine to 17.

Woods, 48, has won 10 majors since but with a gap from the 2008 US Open, won on a broken leg in a playoff over Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines, to a one-stroke triumph at the 2019 Masters.

Woods has struggled to simply walk 72 holes after suffering severe leg injuries in a 2021 car crash but finished 60th at last month's Masters and said he knew how he would work toward Valhalla.

"Well, just keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing," Woods said. "Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer.

"I'm going to do my homework going forward... that's kind of the game plan."

In 2000, May held a one-stroke lead down the final holes but missed a birdie putt from inside four feet at the 15th hole while Woods sank a 10-footer for par and birdied 17 to set up a playoff. Woods birdied the first extra hole and both men parred the last two holes as Woods grabbed his fifth major victory.

"I've talked to him plenty about Valhalla," said Woods's pal Justin Thomas. "As soon as I bring it up, he always jokes that I was probably still in diapers it was so long ago.

"I always remind him he was one lip-out away from losing to Bob May in the PGA and not having the Tiger Slam."

Thomas said Woods doesn't relate the victory as some epic story.

"When he was going about it, it didn't seem very difficult, but he was just better than everybody else and it seemed pretty easy at the time," Thomas said.

Golf: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy recall Valhalla title runs as pair returns for PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy has clarified that he and Tiger Woods haven't had a falling out despite their ongoing disagreement on world golf's direction. The two were reported to be sharing a strenuous equation after McIlroy's bid to join the PGA Tour's Policy Board was vetoed. A report from the news website the Telegraph suggested that it was Woods who pushed back on McIlroy joining the policy board.

McIlroy, who's currently participating at the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina, USA, said: "No, there’s no strain there. I think we might see the future of golf a little bit differently, but I don’t think that should place any strain on a relationship or on a friendship."

“I mean, I think friends can have disagreements or not see eye to eye on things but have disagreements on things,” McIlroy added. “I think that’s fine. But no, I wouldn’t say — we had a really good talk last Friday for 45 minutes just about a lot of different things.”

McIlroy was on the policy board but had resigned in last fall. He is now on PGA Tour's 'transaction subcommittee' which has been tasked with handling of day-to-day negotiations with LIV Golf parent Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

Ever since the announcement of the merger between PGA and LIV, McIlroy has softened his stance towards the joint entity.&nbsp;“It’s probably not going to feel great for either side, but if it’s a place where the game of golf starts to thrive again and we can all get back together, then I think that’s ultimately a really good thing,” McIlroy said on Wednesday.

Both the players will see each other at the upcoming PGA Championship where Woods would be coming back to the action for the first time since the The Masters.

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman said he is open-minded about the idea of moving to a traditional 72-hole format, though he added that the Saudi-backed circuit would need to evaluate the impact of adding an extra round to its 54-hole, no-cut events.

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman said he is open-minded about the idea of moving to a traditional 72-hole format, though he added that the Saudi-backed circuit would need to evaluate the impact of adding an extra round to its 54-hole, no-cut events. Former Masters and U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm, who switched to the rebel circuit in December, has said he hoped LIV would move to a 72-hole format as it would help unite the tours. Norman said at a press conference on Wednesday ahead of LIV's event in Adelaide that they were open to the idea of changing the format but added that there was an "economic impact about putting television on for 72 holes". "It's a great conversation to have," he added. "We will continue to have that conversation going forward. But we sit back and say, what value do we get on putting on television on Thursday. How do we build out in the future? "There are things that we sit back and look at to see what is the most optimal solution to make this a better and better and better event, and 72 holes is discussed." Also read | Indian golfers Aditi Ashok, Diksha Dagar qualify for Paris Olympics 2024 Norman also dismissed a report that was published earlier this month saying LIV had made an $850 million offer to Rory McIlroy, saying: "This is just typical white noise that gets out there in the industry." Rahm, speaking alongside Norman at the press conference, said there was a "level of comfort" in playing 72 holes but that any decision to change the format had to make business sense. "At the end of the day, LIV is a business," he added. "If it doesn't fit the product, it doesn't fit the product." "I'm just a player. There's a lot of people that are a lot smarter than me that can figure it out and explain why they believe 54 holes may be better for them."

Indian golfers Aditi Ashok (46) and Diksha Dagar (138) are set to participate in the Paris Olympics whereas Shubhankar Sharma (197) and Gaganjeet Bhullar (232) also have a strong chance of making it to the Games. While it will be a third appearance for Aditi at the Olympics which is also the most for an Indian, Diksha will be competing for the second time. For Sharma and Bhullar, it would be their maiden appearance at the Olympics. India’s best performance at the Olympics came from Aditi who finished fourth in the Tokyo Games 2020. The Olympic entries are sent by the Indian Golf Union. Qualification for the Olympics is determined by rankings, limited to 60 men’s and as many women’s players through the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). The top 15 players in the OWGR are eligible for the Olympics with a maximum limit of four golfers allowed from a single country. The Olympic Golf Rankings (OGR) after the top 15 players consists of up to two top eligible players per country, as long as it does not have at least two golfers in the top 15. Meanwhile, Sahith Theegala and Akshay Bhatia, the two Indian-Americans making waves on the PGA Tour, have both reached career-high rankings this week. Also read | LIV Golf gives up bid for world ranking points Theegala, who logged a second runner-up finish in 2024 and Bhatia, who won his second PGA Tour title and qualified for the Masters, are now ranked No 12 and No 33 respectively. However, neither Theegala nor Bhatia have the possibility of making an Olympic appearance since the top 15 in the world rankings have as many as eight Americans. In 11 starts, Theegala has been a runner-up at the season-opener the Sentry and at the RBC Heritage and was fifth at the WM Phoenix Open and tied-sixth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Bhatia, in his 12 starts, has won once at the Texas Open and been in top 20 as many as six times. He also missed cut four times. The top four Americans are Scottie Scheffler (1), Wyndham Clark (3), defending Olympic champion Xander Schauffele (5) and Patrick Cantlay (8). Two other Americans, Max Homa (9) and Brian Haran (10), are also ahead of Theegala, who is the seventh-best American in the world rankings. While only four players can enter the Olympic Games, provided they are in world’s top 15, only the US has four or more players in the list. All other countries can send a maximum of two players provided both are in the top 60 of the Olympic qualifiers. Meanwhile, in the women’s section, Aditi, despite a modest 2024 so far, stays in top 50. Diksha, who has been in solid form, has been in the top 10 thrice in five starts on the Ladies European Tour, and has also been tied-26 or better in her two starts on the Epson Tour. Diksha has also touched 138 in the women’s world rankings, her best so far. The next two Indian women are Pranavi Urs, playing her rookie season on LET, at 403 and amateur Avani Prashanth at 531. Among Indian men, Sharma, the lone Indian in top 200, has a best finish of tied-seventh at the Singapore Classic and tied-16 at the Dubai Desert Classic. Bhullar’s best in 2024 has been tied-43 in Oman on the Asian Tour, but he also won once at Chandigarh Open on the Indian Tour, for his second win in four months in India. The next best after Sharma and Bhullar are Veer Ahlawat at 380 and Karandeep Kochhar at 434.

Unflappable American Scottie Scheffler claimed a second Masters title in three years on Sunday, the world number one holding steady while his biggest challengers self-destructed making their way through the infamous Amen Corner.

Scheffler, the Green Jacket winner in 2022, began the day with a one-stroke lead over twice major winner Collin Morikawa and posted a final round of four-under 68 to finish 11-under for the week, four clear of Swedish young gun Ludvig Aberg.

"I did my best to stay calm out there," said Scheffler, after becoming the 18th player to win the Masters multiple times. "I tried to stay patient on the course and was able to make some key shots and key putts today to keep my round going.

"Ludvig played great today. He made a good move at me there on the back nine and I was fortunate to hold him off towards the end."

Aberg closed with a 69 to take solo second spot and cap a sensational majors debut.

Morikawa, after tumbling down the leaderboard with double-bogeys at nine and 11, recovered with birdies at 13 and 15 to help secure a share of third place with American compatriot Max Homa and Britain's Tommy Fleetwood at four-under.

Scheffler, the red hot favourite coming into the year's first major, leaves Augusta National as the planet's undisputed best with three titles and a runner-up finish in his last four starts.

The performance was all the more remarkable as the 27-year-old played with the added distraction of knowing he might have to return home at any moment to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.

"It's a very special time for both of us," said Scheffler, before last year's winner, Spaniard Jon Rahm, slipped the Green Jacket on him. "I can't put into words what it means to win this tournament again.

"I really can't put into words what it's going to be like to be a father for the first time.

"I'm looking forward to getting home and celebrating with Meredith."

<h2>Amen&nbsp;Corner</h2>

It is said the Masters does not start until the back nine on Sunday, with many a Green Jacket won or lost with a trip through Amen Corner, the treacherous three-hole stretch that begins at the par four 11th.

The drama actually started a little earlier at the ninth this year where Scheffler had a tap in birdie, that he nearly holed out for an eagle, to lead by one heading into the turn.

All around Scheffler challengers were unravelling. Morikawa taking a double-bogey at nine to fall three shots off the pace.

As Scheffler was piling on the pressure with birdies at eight, nine and 10, Amen Corner bared its teeth to sink the hopes of three Green Jacket contenders - Aberg, Morikawa and Homa.

Aberg and Morikawa found water at 11, taking double-bogeys, while Homa suffered a double-bogey at the 12th after losing his ball in the bushes.

Even Scheffler could not escape Amen Corner unscathed, his run of three birdies ending with a bogey at 11.

But a birdie at 13 allowed Scheffler to walk away from Amen Corner at nine-under, holding a three-shot lead over Aberg with five to play.

Aberg, however, was not waving the white flag, undoing the damage done at the 11th with back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14 to stay in sight of the leader at two back.

But Scheffler did not take his foot off the gas either, answering with a tap-in birdie at 14 and another at 16 to seal the victory.

Hours before the leaders took to the stage the spotlight belonged to Tiger Woods, with massive galleries lining every hole from tee to green perhaps fearing this could be one of the last times to see the golfing icon at work.

Woods had Augusta buzzing when he claimed a record 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National on Friday and then boldly predicted a sixth Green Jacket was in reach.

But the American great, who has conjured up a long list of magical Masters moments, could not produce another, enduring perhaps the most miserable weekend of his career.

The 48-year-old's injury-battered body appeared to quit on him Saturday as he carded a 10-over 82, his worst major round as a professional, and followed up on Sunday with a five-over 77.

Unflappable American Scottie Scheffler claimed a second Masters title in three years on Sunday, the world number one holding steady while his biggest challengers self-destructed making their way through the infamous Amen Corner.

He made a good move at me there on the back nine and I was fortunate to hold him off towards the end." Aberg closed with a 69 to take solo second spot and cap a sensational majors debut. "I'm looking forward to getting home and celebrating with Meredith." Amen Corner It is said the Masters does not start until the back nine on Sunday, with many a Green Jacket won or lost with a trip through Amen Corner, the treacherous three-hole stretch that begins at the par four 11th. Scheffler takes Green Jacket after Amen Corner bares teeth

Tiger Woods had played just 24 holes this year coming into the opening round of the Masters and the 15-time major winner will put his battered body to the ultimate test on Friday when he will have to play nearly as many holes in a single day.

Looking to make a Masters record 24th consecutive cut, Woods got his quest off to a solid if unspectacular start on Thursday, scrapping his way to one-under par through 13 holes before play was halted due to darkness.

The 48-year-old will play the remaining five holes from his opening round before going straight into another 18 for his second round on one of golf's most challenging layouts. Woods, who returned to golf after a near fatal car crash in 2021 almost resulted in the amputation of his right leg, said his body was holding up fine.

"The body is OK, we've got some work to do yet tonight," said Woods, who also underwent ankle surgery last year. "It was nice to finish up 13. "We're going to warm up and just kind of head down there and start our round, and I think the flow would be pretty much almost like between 20 and 30 minutes in between rounds, so it'll be a natural flow from the finish of the first round and continuation of the second."

With storms delaying the start of the year's first major by 2-1/2 hours, rainy and gusty conditions would not have favoured Woods, but by the time he headed out in the afternoon with Max Homa and Jason Day the sun had returned along with the heat.

The former world number one got his round off to the best possible start with a birdie at the first hole, something he had only done once before in 1999. "I don't remember the other time, to be honest with you," said Woods. "I hit a nice three-wood off of one, hit a nice little eight-iron in there about 10, 12 feet and made the putt."

Bryson DeChambeau leads the Masters after posting a seven-under 65 in the opening round.

Golf: Tiger Woods clears first Masters hurdle, faces ultimate test

The split in the men's game between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia-backed LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;is unsustainable and will not benefit anyone in the long term, Rory McIlroy told&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;Monthly on Tuesday. The four-time major champion said it was disheartening as a competitor to see the best&nbsp;golfers play in separate tours for most of the year.

"There needs to be a correction. I think what's happening is not sustainable right now, so something needs to happen to try to bring it all back together so we can all move forward so we don't have this division that's sort of ongoing," McIlroy said. "They keep going down those different paths and I just don't see how that benefits anyone in the long run... I think (it's) a shame for the overall game of&nbsp;golf."

Although negotiations on a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;are ongoing, McIlroy said it is still a distant prospect. "We're probably still quite a long ways from it, but I would hope that in the future that we can get there, unify the game and get the best players back together again," he added.

Rory McIlroy offered embattled Jay Monahan a vote of confidence on Wednesday, amid ongoing criticism of the PGA Tour commissioner over his negotiations for a deal with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Monahan has been trying to win back&nbsp;golfers' trust ever since he shocked the sport last June by announcing the PGA Tour had been in secret negotiations with LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;backers PIF on a framework agreement that would effectively unify the two circuits in a larger commercial business.

PGA Tour members were caught off guard by the developments with many still feeling betrayed by Monahan for not consulting them. Tiger Woods said at the time that he was left "frustrated" by the lack of player involvement.

McIlroy, who like Woods has been one of the PGA Tour's most vocal supporters in the sometimes bitter feud with LIV, said he was stunned by the news of the potential deal with PIF, but on Wednesday the four-time major winner defended Monahan for the job he has done.

"You look at what Jay has done since he took over," the Northern Irishman said at TPC Sawgrass where the PGA Tour's flagship event, the 50th Players Championship, gets underway on Thursday. "The media rights deal, navigating us through COVID, the strategic alliance with the DP World Tour.

"I would say creating PGA Tour Enterprises, we were just able to accept a billion and a half dollars in the business, people can nit-pick and say he didn't do this right or didn't do that right.

"If you actually step back and look at the bigger picture, I think the PGA Tour is in a far stronger position than when Jay took over."

While issues remain, Monahan said during his press conference on Tuesday that talks with the PIF were accelerating as were reports a deal could be done before next month's Masters.

Monahan also took time to admit he had made mistakes, learned from them and was working hard to regain players' trust maintaining he is the right person to lead the PGA Tour forward. Not everyone is in agreement. Xander Schauffele said that the commissioner still has a long way to go to regain the trust of the membership while Viktor Hovland wants a leader who will take ownership.

"I don't know exactly what should have been done because at the end of the day I don't have all the information," said Hovland on Wednesday. "But at the same time, there were some things that were said that has been walked back on and then things have been very contradictory.

"As a leader of an organisation, I will want a person like that to take some ownership and say, 'hey, we made a couple of mistakes, but this is how we're going to rectify it', instead of kind of sweeping it under the rug, which I felt like has been done to a certain degree."

Golf: Jay Monahan right man for job, says Rory McIlroy amid criticism of PGA Tour commissioner

The PGA Tour's negotiations with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) are accelerating but it is prepared to go it alone with new partners Strategic Sports Group (SSG) if a deal cannot be done, commissioner Jay Monahan said on Tuesday. Monahan, speaking at TPC Sawgrass where the PGA Tour's flagship event, the 50th Players Championship, gets underway on Thursday, stressed he is focusing all his energy on finalising a deal with the LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;backers, bringing unity to a sport that has been split since the arrival of the rebel circuit and opening up new global growth opportunities.

"I do believe that negotiating a deal with PIF is the best outcome," Monahan told reporters. "Obviously it has to be the right deal for both sides, like any situation or negotiation. "As I've said on a number of occasions, you can't negotiate a deal like this in public, so I will be brief. "I recently met with the governor of the PIF, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and our negotiations are accelerating as we spend time together. "We have a shared vision to quiet the noise and unlock&nbsp;golf's worldwide potential."

There have been reports a deal could be finalised before the start of the season's first major, the Masters in April, but several key issues still need to be worked through. Monahan struck an optimistic tone throughout his nearly hour-long press conference but remained tight-lipped about negotiations while conceding several hurdles remain, including an investigation by the U.S. Justice Department to determine if the deal would violate antitrust law.

There is also the tricky issue of players who signed on with LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;for monster paydays returning to the PGA Tour and how the team component LIV has pushed might work. "Balancing the interests of a membership of 200 plus players is complicated, and it's challenging," said Monahan when asked about returning players. "I think when you're in a negotiation like this and you're in a time like this, it requires open-mindedness, it requires flexibility, and it requires a long-term view and a long-term vision. "I think we're not going to be able to satisfy everyone, and that goes for both sides."

While Monahan did not want to speculate on a deal, that has been nearly a year in the works, collapsing he said if it did the PGA Tour would push forward with the help of $3 billion investment from new partner SSG, a consortium of U.S. sports team owners. Rather than complicate a deal Monahan said the SSG's involvement has helped push along negotiations with the PIF.

"I think that in any negotiation, both sides have to work together to reach that successful outcome," said Monahan. "If we can't, I'll continue my focus on all the areas I just outlined, and we'll continue to compete and be as strong a Tour as we can possibly be, with a great new investor in SSG, with a lot of opportunity for that growth. "So if we don't negotiate a deal, then I think ultimately we're back in the same posture that we're in, and we haven't unified our game and taken advantage of this unique point in time."

LIV Golf has formally withdrawn its application to have players receive world ranking points from its tournaments, according to a letter sent to the Saudi Arabia-backed circuit's membership on Tuesday by commissioner and CEO Greg Norman.

LIV Golf first applied for recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking, which plays a key role in determining entry into golf's four majors, in July 2022 but was rejected last October. "We have made enormous efforts to fight for you and to ensure your accomplishments are recognized within the existing ranking system," Norman wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters. "Unfortunately, the OWGR has shown little willingness to productively work with us."

In unanimously rejecting LIV Golf's application last October, the OWGR said the circuit's 54-hole, no-cut events for 48 players was an issue but that it was&nbsp;one&nbsp;capable of being managed through an "appropriate mathematical&nbsp;formula".

Norman said the rankings were structured to penalize anyone&nbsp;who has not played regularly on an "Eligible Tour" with the field ratings disproportionately rewarding play on the PGA Tour.

He also called for an independent ranking system that recognizes how the game is "expanding and modernizing" and that he will continue doing all he can to ensure LIV Golf players were represented at the majors.

"Golf fans deserve to see the best players in the world play in the best tournaments. That has always been our goal," said Norman. "We continue to seek meaningful communication and relationship with each of the majors to ensure that LIV golfers are fairly represented and golf fans around the world have opportunities to see the best competition possible."

While golf's four majors have allowed qualified LIV players to compete, those who earned exemptions into the blue-riband events due to past results could&nbsp;one&nbsp;day be left out as they are not earning world ranking points.

There are currently four LIV players inside the top 50 in the world rankings: Masters champion Jon Rahm (3), Tyrrell Hatton (17), Brooks Koepka (30) and Cam Smith (50). Erik van Rooyen shot an 8-under-par 63 to take the first-round lead at the Mexico Open at Vidanta on Thursday in Vallarta, Mexico. Scorching the front nine with an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole and birdies on Nos. 3, 4, 7 and 9, van Rooyen went out in 29. Ailing superstar Tiger Woods withdrew in the second round of the Genesis Invitational on Friday in the latest setback for the 15-time major champion.

Woods's longtime business partner Rob McNamara said Woods had felt "flu-like symptoms" on Thursday night and his condition worsened until he called it quits after hitting his tee shot at the seventh hole.

"He had a little bit of a fever and that, and was better during the warm-up, but then when he got out there and was walking and playing, he started feeling dizzy," McNamara said.

The arrival of an ambulance at Riviera's clubhouse sparked further concern.

However, McNamara said Woods had responded to on-site treatment for dehydration and Woods left the grounds in a courtesy car.

"Ultimately the doctors are saying he's got potentially some type of flu and that he was dehydrated," McNamara said. "He's been treated with an IV bag and he's doing much, much better."

Woods's premature exit of his first official PGA Tour event in more than 10 months overshadowed another outstanding day for American Patrick Cantlay, who had an eagle and four birdies in a six-under par 65 and a 13-under total of 129.

Cantlay's five-shot lead over Australian Jason Day, Canadian Mackenzie Hughes and American Luke List matched the largest 36-hole lead in tournament history.

But all eyes were on Woods, who buried his face in his hands as he was ferried from the course in a golf cart in an abrupt end to his first tour event since he withdrew from the rain-delayed third round of the Masters last April.

Two weeks later Woods had right ankle surgery to address lingering pain from injuries suffered in a 2021 car crash.

Woods has played only nine official events in the last four seasons. He has missed the cut twice and withdrawn three times.

Woods, who had spinal fusion surgery in 2017, said Thursday that back spasms contributed to a surprising shank at the 18th hole of his one-over par first round.

But McNamara said none of Woods's ongoing injury troubles contributed to his withdrawal.

"Not physical at all, his back's fine," McNamara said. "It was all medical illness, dehydration ... now the symptoms are reversing themselves now that he's had an IV."

Even if the illness is fleeting it has cost Woods valuable, and increasingly rare, tournament play.

The 48-year-old has said he hoped his various physical problems would allow him to play up to one tournament a month this year but on Thursday he admitted it remained to be seen if that would pan out.

"I'm hoping that's the case, hoping that I play that much," Woods said.

Golf: Tiger Woods withdraws with 'flu-like symptoms' in PGA Tour, Cantlay continues to lead

Tiger Woods got off to an erratic start in his first US PGA Tour event in more than 10 months, firing a one-over par 72 that left him eight shots behind first-round leader Patrick Cantlay at the Genesis Invitational.

Woods, playing his first tour-sanctioned tournament since ankle surgery in April -- two weeks after he withdrew from the third round of the Masters with foot pain -- had five birdies and six bogeys at The Riviera Country Club, where his miscues included a surprising shank of his second shot from the fairway at 18.

"Oh, definitely, I shanked it," said Woods, adding that back spasms that he's subject to since spinal fusion surgery contributed.

He recovered by punching an eight-iron through a pair of trees to salvage a bogey, and said his long layoff -- with two "soft" tuneup events in December -- had left him lacking "sharpness."

"A lot of good and a lot of indifferent," Woods said. "It was one or the other ... I was either making birdies or bogeys and just never really got anything consistent going today."

World number seven Cantlay, meanwhile, piled up eight birdies in his seven-under 64, which gave him a one-stroke lead over Australians Cam Davis and Jason Day and American Luke List.

Davis shook off an early bogey to post seven birdies while List and Day both had six birdies in their six-under 65s.

Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris and Tom Hoge shared fifth on five-under 66.

"I thought it was good," said Cantlay, an eight-time PGA Tour winner who is seeking his first title since 2022. "Obviously got off to a great start," added the American, who birdied the first and second and added birdies at the fourth, sixth and eighth to make the turn at five-under.

Birdies at 11, 13 and 14 pushed him to eight-under -- and a two-shot lead -- but he gave a stroke back with an unlikely bogey at the par-three 16th -- where his tee shot hit a tree and dropped 58 yards short of the green and his second found a greenside bunker.

"I got up and down for bogey, it was a good up-and-down," he said. "Obviously a spot I've never been."

The miscue was only a blip as Cantlay enjoyed a strong day on the greens -- including birdie putts of 26 feet and 28 feet at the eighth and 14th respectively.

"I putted really, really well," Cantlay said. "Made every putt I should have and a couple of longer ones."

As a U.S. Senate committee investigates the possibility of a PGA Tour merger with LIV Golf, bankers and consultants who advise Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund have testified that they face "criminal and financial penalties" if they cooperate with the probe.

According to a report by Bloomberg News, the PIF sued its advisers in a Saudi court last November preventing them from sharing information with the U.S. Senate committee on homeland security and governmental affairs.

In Washington this week, banker Michael Klein and representatives of consulting firms McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Teneo Strategy faced lawmakers and pled their case for not cooperating.

"The PIF has been explicit that the disclosure of information relating to BCG's work for PIF is a violation of Saudi law, which ‘imposes criminal penalties for disclosing or disseminating such information including imprisonment for a maximum of 20 years,'" BCG's Rich Lesser said in prepared testimony. "We risk criminal and financial penalties for the firm and for individuals working or living in Saudi Arabia."

That includes 20-year prison sentences for executives and staff working in Saudi Arabia, Klein said.

"This represents aberrant behavior for a client, and, quite frankly, for the PIF, who has historically been a client that has operated with best practices of governance with us," Klein said at a hearing.

The executives added that they are fighting the PIF's lawsuit, Bloomberg reported. They claimed they are attempting to reduce the number of redactions in their documents submitted to the Senate panel. Most of BCG's 91-page document submission, for example, was calendar invitations with every attendee's name redacted.

Last June the PGA Tour announced the "framework agreement" for a shock merger with the PIF, which funds new rival league LIV Golf, as well as with the DP World Tour. While the PGA Tour has taken on a news investment partner made up of U.S.-based sports ownership groups, called Strategic Sports Group, it is said to still be in negotiations with the PIF.

It remains to be seen if the PGA merging with its only rival will be allowed under federal antitrust law.

The consulting groups' hesitance to work with the panel upset Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).

"It's simply staggering to me that American companies are not only willing to accept this claim, allowing the Saudi government to determine what is permitted to provide this subcommittee -- but also that they would use it to justify their refusal to comply with a duly issued congressional subpoena," Blumenthal said.

In a statement to Bloomberg, the PIF said it was making "significant efforts to facilitate the production of requested information from our advisers consistent with the laws of Saudi Arabia, which should be recognized like those of any other country."

U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark said he spoke with LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;representatives over a potential switch to the Saudi Arabia-backed circuit but when he thought about his "legacy" in the game he opted to stick with the PGA Tour -- for this season at least. The 30-year-old moved up to the sixth in the world rankings after he was declared the winner of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which was reduced to 54 holes due to weather conditions in Northern California on Sunday.

Englishman Tyrrell Hatton became the latest high-profile name to join LIV last month, joining a team led by Masters champion Jon Rahm, who made a big-money move in December. Clark said he was interested to see what kind of proposal LIV would put forward. "I wanted to see what they could bring to the table," Clark said at a press conference. "I ultimately declined going to LIV because I felt like I still have a lot of things left in the tank on the PGA Tour and I wanted to chase records, I wanted to chase world ranking."

"My dream is to try to be one of the top players in the world if not the top player. I just grew up always imagining winning PGA Tour events. So I ultimately, I chose my legacy over LIV ... that's really what it came down to." Clark said Adam Scott, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods gave him advice as he tried to come to a decision over his future.

"I don't know what the future holds with my career and what the PGA Tour and LIV is going to do, but at least for this season I am 100% set on the PGA Tour and I want to try to get to as high in the world as I possibly can," he added.

World number one Scottie Scheffler finished with back-to-back birdies to hold a share of the lead after the second round of the PGA Tour Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Friday.&nbsp;

Scheffler shot a bogey-free, eight-under-par round of 64 to share top spot on the leaderboard at 11-under with Belgian Thomas Detry and Sweden's Ludvig Aberg.

The American sank a 35-footer to make birdie on the par-3 17th and then followed up with an aggressive approach on the par-5 18th.

"Boring is always nice on the card, keeping a clean card is good," said Scheffler of his avoidance of bogeys on the historic Californian course.

"I felt like I didn't have to struggle for many pars. I kept the golf course in front of me, made some nice puts and hit some quality shots into the greens. I just gave myself a lot of opportunities," he said.

"I did not realize how much it rained overnight. It was really wet. So like on a lot of these back-to-front greens it's a big adjustment going from hitting a pitching wedge to hitting an 8-iron to try to take off spin," he added.

The soft, wet course encouraged players to attack the greens and Aberg certainly took that approach, following up a birdie on the first with an eagle on the par-5 second.

After a thumping 302-yard drive, the 24-year-old landed his approach 35 feet from the hole and sank his putt superbly.

Aberg was outstanding on the greens as he reached the turn on five-under and he added two more birdies on the back nine on the 11th and 14th.

"Obviously got off to a nice start with a couple of long putts, I don't remember the last time I did that, so obviously that's a little bonus. I felt like I kept playing quite well and kept being disciplined, so it was nice," said the Swede.

Aberg, who played college golf in the USA for Texas Tech and turned pro in June, picked up his first win on the PGA Tour in November at the RSM Classic, following up his win on the DP World Tour in Switzerland in September.

That month he grabbed global attention with his excellent performance in Europe's Ryder Cup win over the United States in Italy.

Aberg said he would draw on those experiences as he searches for his second PGA Tour victory.

"I think any time that you get to win a tournament and feel those emotions coming on the last couple holes and being in the lead and trying to chase down the lead, there's always a lot that you can learn from that," he said.

"I don't try to get too high, not too low, and obviously the experiences that I had last year was a lot of good ones, try to keep building on that and see where that takes us over the weekend," he said.

Overnight leader Detry teed off on 10 and was three-under at the turn but was undone by bogeys on the fourth and fifth as he carded a two-under 70.

"I know my game is really solid, I've been playing some really good golf now for the last couple years, so all I have to do is really trust it and keep building on all these good rounds that I've done under pressure," said the Belgian, who challenged last week at Torrey Pines before a disappointing final two rounds.

Patrick Cantlay recovered from driving out of bounds on the 18th to make par and finish a stroke behind the leading trio after his two-under 70.

It has developed just how Phil Mickelson projected, with&nbsp;Jon&nbsp;Rahm&nbsp;becoming the bridge that has further quelled tensions between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. As&nbsp;Rahm&nbsp;gets set to make his LIV Golf debut this weekend at El Camaleon Golf Club in Mayakoba, Mexico, he expressed appreciation for support that has come from what would have been an unlikely source less than a year ago.

Rory McIlroy, once heavily critical of LIV Golf and the players that joined the upstart tour, has changed his tune so much of late that the PGA Tour star no longer thinks players who have moved on should be prevented from also playing PGA Tour events. He also believes players from both tours should be eligible to play in the Ryder Cup.

When&nbsp;Rahm's move to LIV began to settle in as reality in January, and while McIlroy's feelings softened, Mickelson saw an easier path forward for the two golf entities. Mickelson was one of the first big names associated with LIV at its inception. McIlroy showed further understanding of players defecting to LIV in light of good friend Tyrrell Hatton also committing there in advance of the new season. Hatton's move to LIV reportedly earned him a signing bonus of more than $60 million, more than he has made in earnings as a player over his PGA career.

As Rahm gets set to make his LIV Golf debut this weekend at El Camaleon Golf Club in Mayakoba, Mexico, he expressed appreciation for support that has come from what would have been an unlikely source less than a year ago. When Rahm's move to LIV began to settle in as reality in January, and while McIlroy's feelings softened, Mickelson saw an easier path forward for the two golf entities. Rory McIlroy concedes he has "changed his tune" on the issue of LIV&nbsp;golfers returning to play on the PGA Tour, with the four-time major champion now saying they should be able to come back without being punished. The Northern Irishman has been a vocal critic of the breakaway tour since it launched in 2022 and signed up a host of big names, causing a rift that threatened to tear&nbsp;golf&nbsp;apart.

McIlroy previously accused some of those who jumped ship as being duplicitous and that he would rather retire than join the Saudi Arabia-backed breakaway circuit. However, with negotiations on a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;ongoing, and McIlroy's Ryder Cup teammates Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton making the switch to LIV, the 34-year-old has recently softened his position on the rival tour.

"I think life is about choices. Guys made choices to go and play LIV, guys made choices to stay here," he told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament. "I think it's hard to punish people. I don't think there should be a punishment. "If people still have eligibility on this tour and they want to come back and play or you want to try and do something, let them come back. "Obviously, I've changed my tune on that because I see where&nbsp;golf&nbsp;is and I see that having a diminished PGA Tour and having a diminished LIV Tour or anything else is bad for both parties," McIlroy added.

Englishman Hatton is the latest big name to join LIV, the world number 16 set to be part of an expansion team captained by Masters champion Rahm. "I had a long talk with Tyrrell on Sunday, completely understood where he was coming from," McIlroy said. "It got to the point where they negotiated and got to a place he was comfortable with and he has to do what he feels is right for him. I'm not going to stand in anyone's way from making money and if what they deem life-changing money."

Golf: LIV players returning to PGA Tour should not be punished, says Rory McIlroy

The PGA Tour announced the 16 members who will serve on the Player Advisory Council in 2024, a pivotal year that will help shape the future of the tour. Nine players have agreed to join the PAC, which the PGA Tour said "advises and consults" with the PGA Tour Policy Board and commissioner Jay Monahan. Among the topics facing the PGA Tour leadership is the ongoing negotiations with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund over how to achieve a partnership that involves the LIV&nbsp;Golf&nbsp;League and DP World Tour.

The PGA Tour also reportedly has teamed with U.S.-based Strategic Sports Group, which is making a cash investment to help fund a new for-profit entity, PGA Tour Enterprises. Newly appointed to the council are Lanto Griffin, Nick Hardy, Grayson Murray, Seamus Power, Adam Schenk, Nick Taylor, Josh Teater, Justin Thomas and Camilo Villegas, replacements for outgoing players.

Griffin and Murray are among 20 players who sent a letter to the board in December insisting that all discussions about the tour's future be transparent. Returning members of the council are Sam Burns, Brian Harman, Max Homa, Mackenzie Hughes, Keith Mitchell, Scottie Scheffler and Kevin Streelman.

The board asked Streelman and Villegas to run for chairman of the Player Advisory Council in an election that ends Feb. 27. The winner will replace Jordan Spieth on the board on Jan. 1 and serve a three-year term. Other players on the PGA Tour Policy Board are Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Tiger Woods.

Matthieu Pavon rattled in a birdie putt at the 72nd hole to win the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on Saturday, becoming the first French golfer to win on the modern US PGA Tour.

Up by two strokes with two holes to play, Pavon missed a three-foot par putt at the 17th to see his advantage cut to one.

He was in a fairway bunker off the tee at the par-five 18th, where his second shot left him in the dense left rough.

But he muscled a mighty shot to the green and avoided a playoff with a clutch seven and a half foot putt, carding a three-under par 69 for a 13-under par total of 275.

Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard carded a one-under par 70 to finish second on 276.

The victory on the demanding South Course at Torrey Pines -- a two-time US Open venue -- comes after the 31-year-old Pavon captured his first DP World Tour title -- in his 185th start -- at the Spanish Open in October.

He earned his US PGA Tour card with a top-10 finish in the DP World Tour standings.

"I have no words. It's amazing," Pavon said, his voice shaking in a post-round television interview. "It has been a long journey. I waited seven years on the main tour to win back in Europe and finally got a win in America. It's just tremendous."

Pavon shook off an opening bogey with four front-nine birdies, his two-foot birdie at the ninth pulling him into a tie for the lead with Germany's Stephan Jaeger.

Jaeger, also chasing a first PGA Tour win, came into the final round with a one-stroke lead and pushed it to three with birdies at the second and third holes.

But three back-nine bogeys proved too much to overcome and Jaeger finished tied for third on 11-under with Americans Jake Knapp and Nate Lashley.

Pavon played the final nine in even par, but it wasn't all smooth sailing.

The Frenchman looked to be in trouble at the 14th, where his second shot went through the green down the steep bank behind the putting surface.

Luckily, it stopped before rolling out of bounds and his shot up to the putting surface rolled within a foot of the cup.

He was in a greenside bunker off the tee at the par-three 16th but drilled a 23-foot putt to save par and keep his lead at two strokes.

<h2>The guts to finish</h2>

After the bogey at 17, Pavon watched Hojgaard belt it down the fairway at 18 and thought "it's going to be spicy now."

After his second shot left him in dense rough, his caddie advised caution, but Pavon opted to go for the green.

"I was so pumped at that time, I know I had the energy to lift that ball up on the green," he said. "That ball came out like a butterfly and it really fed the slope on the green ... That was the right time to prove I have the guts to finish that tournament and I did it so I'm so happy about that last hole."

Hojgaard finished with five birdies and three bogeys in his two-under par 70, keeping the pressure on Pavon by reaching the 18th green in two and giving himself a two-foot birdie putt.

"We were all grinding our heart out," Hojgaard said. "(Pavon) made good up-and-downs on the back nine and gave me a chance on 17, but then he pulled some magic on 18, which you've got to do if you want to win.

"I gave it my best to put a bit of pressure on him today, but he got one on me. Happy for him."

He snatched the solo lead with his eagle bomb at the par-five ninth hole -- his last -- moments after Hojgaard completed a bogey-free six-under par 66 on the North Course for an 11-under total of 133.

"I hit a good drive," Jaeger said. "It was a little into the wind today, so we had 260, 270 pin. I kind of tugged it a little bit. I wanted it kind of go middle of the green and I went right at it, ended up landing just short of the pin and scooting kind of (to the) back fringe.

"Had a little downhill right-to-lefter about 35 feet and it ended up curling in. It was awesome to see that. Finishing like that, it was exciting."

Jaeger, 34 and ranked 101st in the world, is chasing his first US PGA Tour title.

He opened with back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th and strung together three more at 15, 16 and 17.

He followed his lone bogey of the day at the first with birdies at the third and eighth before his bravura finish and was looking forward to being in the hunt over the final two rounds on the challenging South Course, the two-time US Open venue.

"I've won a few times on the Korn Ferry, but to be able to be out here on the weekend with the cameras on and play in front of the guys, last couple groups is awesome," Jaeger said.

Hojgaard had opened with a strong five-under effort on the South Course on Wednesday and followed that up with another solid effort.

He climbed the leaderboard with four straight birdies from the fourth through the seventh and added two more birdies at 13 and 16.

<h2>Matsuyama ace</h2>

Although playing the South Course first may have taken some pressure off, he said the North layout was still plenty challenging.

"There's still thick rough around North Course, you've still got to hit the shots out there," he said. "I don't feel like it's that easy. I've played some really good golf these two days so it kind of felt stress free, but I can see that you can get in trouble on both courses."

Two more Europeans, Belgian Thomas Detry and France's Matthieu Pavon, shared third on 134, Pavon posting an impressive seven-under 65 on the South Course where Detry carded a four-under 68.

"A pretty good round overall, very solid off the tee," said Pavon, who had eight birdies and one bogey. "Didn't catch much rough the last two days, that was key. And then the putter was on fire, which is funny.

"I really missed short ones ... but dropped some big bombs and keep the momentum going."

Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama had a rollercoaster of a day on the South Course, where he carded his first hole-in-one on tour at the par-three eighth but also had four bogeys in his one-under 71 that left him five adrift.

Rising amateur star Nick Dunlap withdrew from this week's PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines in California on Monday, saying he needs time to mull his future following his breakthrough professional victory at the weekend. The 20-year-old University of Alabama student said after the win he was uncertain if he would continue his amateur career or immediately jump to the PGA Tour. In a statement on Monday, Dunlap said he was withdrawing from this week's PGA Tour event outside San Diego to reflect on his options.

Golf: Rising amateur star Nick Dunlap mulls future after PGA Tour win

Reigning US Amateur champion Nick Dunlap&nbsp;became the first amateur since 1991 to win a PGA Tour title, winning a back-nine showdown on Sunday to capture the American Express tournament. Dunlap, a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of Alabama, sank the winning par putt from just inside six feet at the 18th hole to fire a two-under-par 70 at the Pete Dye Stadium Course -- one of three courses used this week.

Despite his one-stroke victory, however, Dunlap will not take home any money from the win.&nbsp; As an amateur, the American is ineligible for the winner's prize of $1.51 million, which goes to runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout of South Africa. Dunlap finished on 29-under 259 to set a 72-hole record low winning score, breaking the mark of 28-under set by Patrick Reed in 2014.

"I felt this script today was already written," Dunlap said. "I was going to give it everything I had whether I shoot 75 or 65 or 70. "I'm so happy to be standing here."

Dunlap became the first amateur to win a US PGA Tour event since Phil Mickelson captured the 1991 Northern Telecom Open in Tucson, Arizona. Dunlap also became the second-youngest PGA Tour winner in the past 90 years,&nbsp;trailing only Jordan Spieth's victory at 19 at the 2013 John Deere Classic, and the youngest amateur winner since 1910.

The historic victory didn't come without tension-packed drama. Dunlap sank a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-5 16th to share the lead with 24th-ranked American Sam Burns, who found water off the tee at the par-3 17th on the day's toughest hole.

Dunlap made a routine par while Burns stumbled with a double bogey and the amateur led by two with the par-4 18th remaining. But ahead of him on the 18th green, Bezuidenhout birdied to pull within one. At 18, Dunlap's tee shot went way into the right rough and his approach stopped 75 feet from the hole down a slope.

"I thought I had a two-shot lead," Dunlap said. "I hit somebody, I'm sorry for whoever that was, got a great break and was able to give myself a good look." Dunlap&nbsp;pitched his third to just inside six feet and then sank his par putt for the victory "Nothing like I have ever felt," Dunlap said. "It's so cool to be out here and experience this as an amateur. "Whether I had made that or missed that, if you would have told me Wednesday night I would have a putt to win this golf tournament, I wouldn't believe you."

Bezuidenhout finished on 260 after a closing 65 and praised Dunlap. "He's a hell of a player and congrats to him," Bezuidenhout said. "Hopefully he can be out on the PGA Tour soon and we all can get to play with him."

Sharing third on 261 were Taiwan's Kevin Yu, who matched his career-low PGA round with a 63, and Americans Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas. Despite missing out on the winner's check, Dunlap will become eligible to take PGA Tour membership at any time in the 2024 PGA campaign.

Then he would receive the benefits of any PGA Tour winner, which include membership through the 2026 season plus entries into the Masters and PGA Championship and any unplayed "signature" events. Dunlap already has berths in this year's Masters, PGA and British Open from his US Amateur triumph if he is an amateur when the events tee off.

A social media video posting of Dunlap's Alabama golf squad showed his teammates go berserk when the winning putt dropped. Dunlap led by three when the day began, kept that margin with a birdie at the par-5 fifth but made a double bogey after finding water off the seventh tee.

"Hitting that ball in the water on seven tested everything I had," Dunlap said. "I missed a couple putts I thought I was going to make." Dunlap made a six-foot birdie putt at the eighth and an eight-foot putt to save par at nine, fell behind after Burns made a birdie-birdie back-nine start.

Reigning US Amateur champion Nick Dunlap became the first amateur since 1991 to win a PGA Tour title, winning a back-nine showdown on Sunday to capture the American Express tournament.

Reigning US Amateur champion Nick Dunlap became the first amateur since 1991 to win a PGA Tour title, winning a back-nine showdown on Sunday to capture the American Express tournament. Dunlap, a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of Alabama, sank the winning par putt from just inside six feet at the 18th hole to fire a two-under-par 70 at the Pete Dye Stadium Course -- one of three courses used this week. Despite his one-stroke victory, however, Dunlap will not take home any money from the win. As an amateur, the American is ineligible for the winner's prize of $1.51 million, which goes to runner-up Christiaan Bezuidenhout of South Africa. "I'm so happy to be standing here." Dunlap became the first amateur to win a US PGA Tour event since Phil Mickelson captured the 1991 Northern Telecom Open in Tucson, Arizona. Dunlap also became the second-youngest PGA Tour winner in the past 90 years, trailing only Jordan Spieth's victory at 19 at the 2013 John Deere Classic, and the youngest amateur winner since 1910. "I hit somebody, I'm sorry for whoever that was, got a great break and was able to give myself a good look." Dunlap pitched his third to just inside six feet and then sank his par putt for the victory "Nothing like I have ever felt," Dunlap said. "It's so cool to be out here and experience this as an amateur. "Whether I had made that or missed that, if you would have told me Wednesday night I would have a putt to win this golf tournament, I wouldn't believe you."
