The 28-year-old is expected to leave Chelsea at the end of the season after seven years at Stamford Bridge, with British media linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

"If it's my last game I will try to do everything for this club to win a trophy," Hazard told BT Sport.

"In my mind I don't know yet, I don't think about that. I'm only thinking about winning something for this club and this squad.

"We played a great game but the semi-final is not so easy. We are happy and we will go to Baku to try to win the trophy", Hazard said.

Hazard's teammates Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Willian hoped the Belgian would stay at the club. Chelsea will not be allowed to sign a replacement if Hazard leaves after FIFA upheld the one-year transfer ban earlier this week.

"I'm sure everyone here, and us players, would love him to stay and be a Chelsea player until he finishes his career," Loftus-Cheek said.

"But who knows what he's thinking. Over the last seven, eight years he's been fantastic -- the trophies he has helped us win. Whatever decision he makes we will respect it", Loftus-Cheek added.

Willian said, "He's one of the best players in the world. For me I hope he stays, but in football, you never know."

"I think his head is here, to play for Chelsea. Then after he's finished the season maybe he can talk about his situation", Willian added.

With Chelsea playing away at Leicester City on the final day of the league season, the penalty could be Hazard's last kick of a ball at Stamford Bridge but he knows there remains a big job to do in Azerbaijan.

"I always take my responsibility when I have to," said Hazard, who has 19 goals this season.

"Today we are happy but it's not finished. We have another game to play against Arsenal. We need to go there and play with quality and win the game", Hazard said.

Chelsea's Eden Hazard puts Europa League trophy before transfer talk

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante will miss the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday and faces a further two weeks out with a hamstring problem, manager Maurizio Sarri said on Wednesday.

France international Kante left the field early in the first half of last Sunday's 3-0 Premier League win over Watford and Sarri said after the game that the decision not to rest the World Cup winner was a mistake.

Chelsea, who drew the first leg at Frankfurt 1-1, are hopeful the 28-year-old can feature if they reach the final of Europe's second-tier club competition on May 29.

"He had a problem with his hamstring, not very serious but he needs to rest for a couple of weeks," Sarri told reporters.

"We can try to recover him for only the final if we get there. I'm not sure if he can, but we can try."

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who could fill in for Kante again, said Chelsea will not take their foot off the gas despite sealing a top-four league finish and Champions League qualification.

"We won't be relaxed tomorrow, we have the Champions League qualification but we have the chance to win a trophy and that will be stupid to go into the match in a relaxed manner," Loftus-Cheek said.

Sarri echoed the views of the England international but warned his players of the danger posed by the German side.

"I think we have reached the target of the club, so we're very happy. We have to play in another competition. We have to reach the final and try to win," the Italian added.

"It's not easy because we have to play a dangerous team as we saw in the first leg. They're dynamic and aggressive and when they can find spaces, it's a dangerous match.

"You have to play a semi-final against a strong team and it's difficult to be favourite. I'm sure tomorrow they can play at their best... we need to be careful."

Chelsea's N'Golo Kante out of Europa League semi against Frankfurt

Chelsea set a Europa League record of 16 successive matches unbeaten on Thursday with 1-1 semi-final first leg draw at Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to a Pedro equaliser on the stroke of half time.

Serbian Luka Jovic had put the hosts ahead after 23 minutes.

The draw meant Chelsea, Europa League winners in 2013, surpassed Atletico Madrid's 2011-12 unbeaten run.

They took time to find their stride, however, with Jovic stooping to head past the outstretched Kepa Arrizabalaga off a cross from compatriot Filip Kostic with a goal that raised the decibels in a stadium famed for its atmosphere.

Jovic, firmly on the radar of top clubs across Europe, has now scored nine goals in the competition and 26 in all this season.

Frankfurt failed to press home their advantage, however, running out of energy in a second half dominated by the visitors with Jorginho dictating play.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek led the fightback, blasting just wide in the 42nd minute and then nimbly beating defenders before feeding the ball through to Spanish winger Pedro who hammered in a low left-foot shot.

Chelsea were far livelier after the break, with the hosts having another close escape when David Luiz rattled the crossbar from a dipping free kick.

Frankfurt captain David Abraham headed over the bar while unmarked with six minutes remaining after an optimistic appeal for a penalty came to nothing.

"At 1-0 down we were a bit in trouble," Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta said.

"I think the last 15 minutes of the first half we dominated with great chances. We scored the goal before halftime and in the second half I think we had more chances than them."

Both sides are fourth in their domestic leagues, with the Europa League offering an alternative route to next season's Champions League.

The second leg is at Stamford Bridge next Thursday, when the positions in the Premier League will also come into clearer focus before the final weekend.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri left Eden Hazard on the bench until the 62nd minute, preferring to rest the Belgian forward for those important remaining Premier League games against Watford and Leicester City.

When Hazard did come on, he had a shot tipped over the bar.

"I am very happy with the performance but not with the result," said Sarri, who felt Chelsea should have scored more.

"After 25 minutes we started to play. We played very well in the last 20 minutes of the first half, very well for 35 minutes in the second half. And so I think that at the end we deserved to win. But 1-1 away is not so bad."

Arsenal beat Valencia 3-1 in the other semi-final first league, increasing the likelihood of an all-London final in Baku.

Chelsea set Europa League record with 1-1 draw at Eintracht

Everton manager Marco Silva has dismissed claims that his side is showing signs of inconsistency towards the end of the season as they look to finish seventh and potentially qualify for the Europa League.

Everton have won four of their last five games -- which included wins over top six sides Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United -- but lost 2-0 at already-relegated Fulham to drop to ninth in the standings.

"For me, when we lose one game away or at home it can happen," Silva told reporters ahead of Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace. "It's not a moment to talk about inconsistency in our team.

"It can happen even though I always prepare the team to win. All of you expected after our three wins in a row to go there (to Fulham) and win easily. I told you it would be a difficult match, and we prepared our players in that way.

"They were better than us. We didn't perform the way I wanted, but it's not a matter of inconsistency because if you look at our last six games, our form is really good."

Finishing seventh could allow Everton to play in the Europa League qualifying rounds if Manchester City, who have already qualified for the Champions League, beat Watford in the FA Cup.

Everton are two points behind seventh-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers and a point behind eighth-placed Watford, with one or both sides assured of dropping points when they face each other on Saturday.

"First, we have to keep fighting. We aren't in seventh, it's not the most important thing in this moment," Silva added.

"It will be tight. We are in competition (for seventh) with clubs having really good seasons too. We have to keep doing the best we can and in the end we will see what position we end up in the table."

However, Silva could be without his leading goal scorer Richarlison at Palace. The Brazilian will face a late fitness test on Friday while forward Theo Walcott is yet to recover from an illness.

"Richarlison we have big doubts if he will be able to play," Silva said. "He tried yesterday to work with us.

"He felt different but let's see how he is able to react tomorrow. Today he tried again, but he will be a major doubt for us."

Defiant Marco Silva says Everton are not inconsistent

Chelsea reached the Europa League semi-finals by beating Slavia Prague 4-3 in a roller-coaster game on Thursday, helped by a Pedro brace in a first-half onslaught before withstanding a comeback bid by the Czechs after the break.

Chelsea, who will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the last four, were cruising 4-1 at halftime but Slavia's Petr Sevcik slammed home two strikes early in the second half, narrowing the aggregate score to 5-3.

With the Stamford Bridge crowd increasingly unsettled, and Slavia being roared on by their travelling fans, Sevcik spurned a chance to cut the deficit further.

But Chelsea, having won the first leg 1-0, held on to set up a semi against Eintracht, who beat visiting Benfica 2-0 to go through on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate scoreline.

A Chelsea triumph in the Europa League, a trophy they won in 2013, would secure a way back into the prestigious Champions League if they finish outside Premier League top four this season. They currently sit fifth in the table.

There was little hint of the tension to come when Chelsea raced into a 3-0 lead within 17 minutes, starting with Pedro chipping goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar after exchanging passes with Cesar Azpilicueta and Olivier Giroud in the fifth.

The Spain winger hit the post four minutes later only for the ball to rebound off Simon Deli's face for an own goal.

It was Pedro who carved out Chelsea's third when he squared for a simple finish by Giroud and the scurrying Spaniard claimed Chelsea's fourth in the 27th minute when he converted a rebound after Kolar saved from Giroud.

A minute earlier, Slavia's captain Tomas Soucek had given the boisterous Czech fans something to cheer when he powered in a header from a corner, leaving the door open for the visitors' improbable attempt to turn the game around.

Familiar problem

Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri said he had to get to the bottom of the familiar problem of his side losing their way in the second half of matches.

On Sunday, Chelsea conceded two goals shortly after the break in a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool in the Premier League, a pattern seen in other games.

"As usual in the last two months we started very badly in the second half," Sarri told reporters. "It's a big problem... We need a solution, we need to solve this problem."

Sarri, who has never won a major final as a coach, said he was determined to see his side triumph this time.

"For me, I think it is very important first of all to get to the final, but this time I don't want to just get to the final, I want to win the final," he said.

Slavia coach Jindrich Trpisovsky lamented his side's defensive performance in the opening 45 minutes.

"If we had managed the first half better, I think we could have gone through," he said. "Everyone says the English Premier League is the example to follow and that we cannot play against teams like this. But I think we showed today that we can."

Familiar problem Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri said he had to get to the bottom of the familiar problem of his side losing their way in the second half of matches. On Sunday, Chelsea conceded two goals shortly after the break in a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool in the Premier League, a pattern seen in other games. "As usual in the last two months we started very badly in the second half," Sarri told reporters. "It's a big problem... We need a solution, we need to solve this problem." Sarri, who has never won a major final as a coach, said he was determined to see his side triumph this time.

Europa League: Chelsea beat Slavia 4-3 to book Europa League semi

A magnificent Alexandre Lacazette free kick sent Arsenal into the Europa League semi-finals with a comfortable 1-0 win away to a toothless Napoli on Thursday, ending Serie A's interest in European competition this season.

The Frenchman struck in the 36th minute to earn Arsenal a tie against Valencia, just as Napoli, trailing 2-0 from the first leg, were threatening to take control of the game.

Carlo Ancelotti's team lost their way after that and, although the hosts had 67 per cent of possession, Arsenal were able to sit out the second half to reach the semi-finals for the second season in a row with a 3-0 aggregate win.

"We came here with ambition, we wanted to win, to score some goals. We did it, and kept a clean sheet as well, which is important for the confidence," said Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny.

Ancelotti said that "the game lasted 30 minutes."

"We had two chances to score and we didn't succeed," he added. "We have not been as lucid in the last two months, we are more predictable and because of that, we have difficulty with our finishing."

In a lively opening half hour, Napoli threatened to make a breakthrough as Jose Callejon's effort was saved by Petr Cech's legs and Arkadiusz Milik had a goal chalked off for offside.

The Pole should have put Napoli ahead minutes later when compatriot Piotr Zielinski's cross found him unmarked in the penalty area but he headed wide.

Arsenal also lost Aaron Ramsey to an apparent hamstring problem but, just as it seemed things were going against them, they went ahead as Lacazette curled his free-kick around a poorly organised wall from 25 metres.

Arsenal should have wrapped up the game four minutes into the second half but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with only Alex Meret to beat, placed his shot too near the goalkeeper who was able to save.

The second half petered out after that as Arsenal sat back and Napoli enjoyed most of the possession but did little with it.

Lorenzo Insigne shot weakly at Cech after getting clear of the Arsenal defence and was immediately substituted, a decision which infuriated the forward who watched the rest of the match on the touchline with his arms folded.

Fabian Ruiz summed up their evening by firing their last chance wildly over the crossbar in stoppage time.

"Insigne was just disappointed with the way the match went, he had believed in our chances like everyone else" said Ancelotti. "His reaction was not linked to the substitution."

Europa League: Magnificent Lacazette free kick sends Arsenal into semis

Relegated Fulham dealt Everton's hopes of Europa League action next season a heavy blow at Craven Cottage on Saturday as they beat their visitors 2-0 with goals from captain Tom Cairney and Ryan Babel.

After an action-packed but goalless first half, Cairney broke the deadlock just seconds after the restart when Ryan Babel raced down the left and into the area before cutting the ball back to him.

Cairney, one of the Cottagers' promotion-winning heroes last season, lashed his first Premier League goal in low past Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, putting his side on track for only their fifth win of an otherwise miserable campaign in the top flight.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin came nearest for Everton, hitting the post soon after the goal, but Babel sealed the win in the 69th minute, taking off on a solo run from the halfway line before coolly chipping the ball over Pickford.

Everton's loss means they stay ninth on 46 points. The Merseysiders have been climbing back into contention for Europa League action next season with their recent run of strong results, but need to reach seventh place to secure that.

Fulham's win leaves the already-relegated Londoners second from bottom on 20 points.

Fulham dent Everton's Europa League hopes with 2-0 win

An Aaron Ramsey strike and a Kalidou Koulibaly own goal gave Arsenal a 2-0 victory over Napoli in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday - and a rare and valuable clean sheet to take to Italy in a week's time.

Arsenal took the lead in the 14th minute through Ramsey, who finished off a sweeping move down the right by calmly slotting the ball past Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret.

They doubled the advantage 10 minutes later after a moment of individual brilliance from Lucas Torreira, who dashed through the Napoli midfield before spinning and switching the ball to his left foot and letting fly.

The Uruguayan's shot took a heavy deflection off Senegal defender Koulibaly and was registered as an own-goal.

"We can be happy with this result, but (Napoli) are going to be more competitive away. Our challenge - our success - is going to be if we can be competitive away," Arsenal manager Unai Emery told reporters, repeatedly describing the tie as "50:50".

The Gunners tried to increase their advantage as the first half wore on but they failed to capitalise despite several shots on goal from strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Napoli had Meret to thank for numerous saves.

Carlo Ancelotti's men poured forward at the start of the second half in search of an away goal, with striker Lorenzo Insigne's effort ruled offside and Koulibaly denied moments later when keeper Petr Cech tipped his header over the bar.

Arsenal chances

The game quickly opened up and Ramsey, who will join Napoli's rivals and Serie A leaders Juventus in the close season, and Nacho Monreal created chances at the other end but were unable to outwit Meret again.

Napoli went closest to scoring when Insigne raced down the right and crossed to Piotr Zielinski, but the Pole's right-foot effort shot up over the bar.

"We had our chances and wasted them. We know we didn’t have a good game. Now we have to think about the return leg," Insigne told Sky Sports.

"The away goal would have been vital. We have to stay focused, learn from our mistakes and have more courage next week," he said.

The Italian side have now failed to beat English opponents away from their San Paolo stadium in nine attempts in European competition, and will need to find some scoring form at home if they are to progress in the competition.

"I think the second half gave us some idea how we can play the second game," Ancelotti told reporters, suggesting his side had more of the run of play as Arsenal's players tired, a number of them pulling up with cramp as the game neared the end.

Europa League: Arsenal take 2-0 advantage over Napoli

A late header by defender Marcos Alonso and Kepa Arrizabalaga's goalkeeping heroics helped Chelsea beat a stubborn Slavia Prague 1-0 in their Europa League quarter-final, first leg on Thursday.

Spaniard Alonso broke the deadlock for the west London side in the 86th minute when he sneaked behind two defenders to connect with Willian's cross and score what proved to be the winner in the first competitive meeting between the two sides.

"I'm very happy with the result and also with the performance because at this moment we are able to suffer, in the past we were not," Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri told reporters.

"In the past, when we were in trouble, we conceded immediately a goal, now we did not concede anything."

Sarri made seven changes from the team that beat West Ham United 2-0 in the Premier League on Monday, with talisman Eden Hazard coming off the bench for the last half an hour.

Willian's fierce shot hit the bar in the first half before the hosts had a chance to open the scoring on the counter in the 69th minute when Ibrahim Traore drive into the Chelsea box and struck a shot that was superbly punched away by Kepa.

The Spanish goalkeeper then kept out left-back Jan Boril's close-range shot in the 80th minute.

Alonso's goal gave the Blues a vital away goal as they put behind them bitter memories of the stadium where they lost the 2013 Super Cup to Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout.

Slavia defender Simon Deli said: “It’s disappointing because we did very well and in the last minutes we conceded this kind of goal. Of course, it’s difficult for us, but it’s football.

"Now we’ll prepare for our next game - the derby - and then against Chelsea in London,” he added referring to the Czech league leaders' game against third-placed Sparta on Sunday.

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck twice as his side beat Stade Rennes 3-0 to reach the Europa League quarter-finals and join Chelsea, who earlier on Thursday thrashed Dynamo Kiev 5-0 with a hat-trick from Oliver Giroud.

But Inter Milan went out after a 1-0 home loss to Eintracht Frankfurt who made the last eight along with Napoli, Benfica, Slavia Prague and Spanish sides Valencia and Villarreal.

Arsenal had lost the first leg 3-1 against Rennes in France but it took them just 15 minutes to swing the tie their way.

Their Gabon forward Aubameyang tapped home a cross from Aaron Ramsey with just five minutes on the clock and then turned provider 10 minutes later when he crossed for Ainsley Maitland-Niles to double the lead with a header.

Although Rennes hit the post early in the second period, they were mostly toothless and Aubameyang cemented the victory with another goal from close range after 72 minutes.

Arsenal became only the second team in Europa League history to win a tie after losing the first leg 3-1.

Chelsea’s French striker Giroud, the competition's top scorer this season, got his seventh and eighth goals before Marcos Alonso tapped in a third just before halftime.

Giroud netted his third goal after 59 minutes when he headed home a Willian free kick and Callum Hudson-Odoi added a fifth to cap an 8-0 aggregate victory for the Premier League side.

The perfect hat-trick – goals with his left and right foot plus a header - was Giroud’s first for Chelsea and the win was the London club’s ninth in 10 European games this season and their biggest in the UEFA Cup or Europa League.

In the only tie between two former winners of the UEFA Cup, the predecessor to the Europa league, Eintracht stunned three-time champions Inter with a 1-0 victory that took them through.

Luka Jovic, the 21-year-old striker on loan from Benfica, lobbed Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic after six minutes and the visitors held on to progress after a goalless first leg.

Napoli had beaten Salzburg 3-0 at home last week and it looked like the tie was wrapped up after 14 minutes when Arkadiusz Milik put them ahead with an acrobatic strike.

But the Austrians, whose unbeaten home run in Europe stretches back 17 games, fought back for a 3-1 win on the night.

Munas Dabbur equalised with his eighth Europa League goal of the season and substitute Fredrik Gulbrandsen made it 2-1 from a low cross by Andreas Ulmer midway through the second half.

Christoph Leitgeb got Salzburg's third in stoppage-time but the away goal ensured Napoli went through 4-3 on aggregate.

It took hosts Krasnodar 85 minutes to revive their hopes of a quarter-final place at the expense of Valencia.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Krasnodar levelled the aggregate score through Shapi Suleymanov's spectacular strike which would have put them through on away goals.

However, Goncalo Guedes broke Russian hearts with a goal in stoppage time to earn the Spaniards a dramatic victory.

They were joined by neighbours Villarreal, who qualified 5-2 on aggregate with a 2-1 win over Zenit St Petersburg.

Gerard Moreno put Villarreal 1-0 ahead after half an hour and Carlos Bacca doubled their lead with his 21st European goal early in the second half. Branislav Ivanovic got a consolation for Zenit in stoppage time.

Sevilla, were knocked out 6-5 on aggregate by Slavia Prague who claimed a thrilling 4-3 extra-time win. The teams were level at 2-2 after 90 minutes to leave the tie at 4-4 on aggregate.

But Mick van Buren and Ibrahim-Benjamin Traore scored for the home team either side of a Franco Vazquez goal for Sevilla to dump the three times Europa League winners out.

Benfica also needed extra time to knock out Dynamo Zagreb.

Jonas gave the Portuguese a 1-0 lead after 90 minutes to level the score at 1-1 on aggregate before Francisco Ferreira and Alex Grimaldo, with a sensational 30-yard drive, struck in the extra period to earn Benfica a record fifth last-eight spot.

Europa League: Aubameyang's double strike topples Stade Rennes; Arsenal in quarter-finals

Chelsea outclassed Dynamo Kiev 3-0 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday but Arsenal face an uphill task to make the quarter-finals after slumping to a 3-1 defeat at French club Rennes.

Napoli, Dynamo Zagreb, Villarreal and Valencia will also take victories into next week’s second legs, while Sevilla v Slavia Prague and Eintracht Frankfurt v Inter Milan ended all square.

Chelsea were by far the better side at Stamford Bridge – they had eight shots on target to Kiev's none - but it was not until Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a third goal in stoppage time that the scoreline fully reflected their dominance.

Pedro put the home side ahead after 17 minutes when he played a one-two with Olivier Giroud and set them on the road to their eighth win in nine Europa League games this season.

Brazilian midfielder Willian made it two with a perfect free kick after 65 minutes before 18-year-old substitute Hudson-Odoi side-footed home.

Arsenal had never lost to French opposition away from home in 12 previous European games and they took an early lead when what looked like a cross from Alex Iwobi evaded everyone and sneaked in at the far post.

Playing in their change turquoise-green shirts, the English side controlled most of the first half but the match changed completely four minutes before halftime when Sokratis Papastathopoulos was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Rennes equalised from the resulting free kick when Benjamin Bourigeaud rifled home at the second attempt and they came out for the second half looking far more positive than the Londoners.

The French team went ahead 20 minutes into the second half when Mehdi Zeffane’s shot looped off defender Nacho Monreal into the net and Ismaila Sarr made it 3-1 two minutes from time when he powered home a header from a lovely curling left-wing cross.

First-half goals from Arkadiusz Milik and Fabian Ruiz, and an own goal by Jerome Onguene gave Napoli a 3-0 over Austrian champions Salzburg and extended their unbeaten home record in the competition to five matches.

Sevilla, who have won the Europa League three times, twice went ahead against Slavia Prague but were pegged back on both occasions in a pulsating 2-2 draw in Spain.

Wissam Ben Yedder put the home side ahead in the first minute and although Miroslav Stoch equalised with a deflected shot, Munir restored Sevilla's lead.

Alex Kral put the visitors level again six minutes before halftime when he turned a corner into the net.

Fellow Spaniards Villarreal had a happier evening in St Petersburg and will take a solid 3-1 lead over Zenit into the second leg at home.

Villarreal, third bottom of La Liga, took the lead after 33 minutes when Vicente Iborra headed home from a free kick but the home side took only two minutes to level thanks to Sardar Azmoun, whose quick thinking allowed him to stab home from close range.

The Spaniards, though, took control in the second half, with Gerard Moreno putting them 2-1 ahead after 64 minutes and Manu Morlanes added the third.

Valencia, UEFA Cup winners in 2004 and the third Spanish side left in the competition, beat Krasnodar 2-1 thanks to a first-half double from Rodrigo.

An improved second-half performance from the Russian side was rewarded with a goal by Swede Viktor Claesson.

Bruno Petkovic scored a penalty for Dinamo Zagreb to give them a 1-0 home win over Benfica while in the only game between two former winners of the UEFA Cup, Eintracht Frankfurt were held 0-0 at home by Inter Milan.

It was the first time Eintracht, who have won seven of their eight Europa League matches this season, failed to score.

The second legs take place next Thursday.

Chelsea outclassed Dynamo Kiev 3-0 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday but Arsenal face an uphill task to make the quarter-finals after slumping to a 3-1 defeat at French club Rennes.

Arsenal to face Rennes in Europa League last 16, Chelsea draw Dynamo Kiev

Chelsea claimed a 2-1 victory at Malmo in the Europa League last-32 first leg on Thursday to ease some of the pressure on beleaguered coach Maurizio Sarri, while Arsenal suffered a shock loss to BATE Borisov.

Away side Chelsea desperately needed a response after back-to-back humiliating away losses, with last Sunday's 6-0 thrashing by Manchester City following a 4-0 reverse at Bournemouth.

Ross Barkley took advantage of a defensive lapse by the home team to put Chelsea ahead on the half-hour mark, with Olivier Giroud adding a 58th-minute second before Malmo's late goal gave them a glimmer of hope ahead of next week's return match at Stamford Bridge.

Sarri named a strong team, although he did leave Gonzalo Higuain and Eden Hazard on the bench.

Chelsea found themselves up against a spirited Malmo outfit in the first half, roared on by a vociferous home crowd, but kept the Swedes at arm's length before Barkley grabbed their first away goal of 2019.

Pedro swung over a cross which Lasse Nielsen should have headed away, but the defender failed with his attemped volleyed clearance and Barkley was on hand to control and stab into the net.

Uwe Rosler's Malmo piled on the pressure at the end of the half, but Barkley twice produced crucial headers at the other end to keep Chelsea in front.

Malmo continued to push Chelsea back after the restart, with David Luiz flinging himself to his right to head Arnor Traustason's shot past the post.

But the Premier League giants took total control of the tie in the 58th minute with a wonderful counter-attack.

Barkley led the charge before picking out Willian, and the Brazilian powered to the byline before cutting the ball back for Giroud to flick in a cool back-heeled finish.

The French striker has now scored five goals in six Europa League games this season, despite only netting once in 23 matches in domestic competitions.

But Malmo did grab the goal their efforts deserved in the 80th minute, as Anders Christiansen slotted past Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Arsenal beaten in Belarus

Arsenal face an uphill battle to progress after a 1-0 defeat by BATE in a game which saw Alexandre Lacazette sent off for elbowing Aleksandar Filipovic with five minutes remaining.

Stanislav Dragun put BATE ahead just before the break in Barysaw and Arsenal never threatened an equaliser, with Lacazette's late dismissal also ruling him out of next week's second leg in London.

Unai Emery's side have now won just two of their last nine away matches -- last weekend's victory over the Premier League's bottom club Huddersfield and a FA Cup win against third-tier Blackpool.

Elsewhere, Napoli began life without record goalscorer Marek Hamsik with a 3-1 win in a fiery atmosphere at FC Zurich.

Lorenzo Insigne, who has replaced Hamsik as captain after the Slovakian's move to China, scored the opening goal, with Jose Callejon and Piotr Zielinski also on target.

Celtic's European adventures appear to be over for another season after being outclassed 2-0 by Valencia at Parkhead.

Denis Cheryshev and Ruben Sobrino got the goals as the Spaniards extended their recent unbeaten run to six matches.

Inter Milan claimed a 1-0 win at Rapid Vienna despite Mauro Icardi snubbing the trip after being stripped of the captaincy over a contract row, with Lautaro Martinez scoring the winner from the penalty spot.

Wissam Ben Yedder's 22nd-minute strike helped record five-time winners Sevilla take a large step towards the last 16 with a 1-0 victory over Lazio in Rome, while Benfica backed up their 10-0 weekend thumping of Nacional by winning 2-1 at Galatasaray.

Salzburg, semi-finalists last season, lost 2-1 at Club Brugge, while 10-man Sporting Lisbon were beaten 1-0 by Villarreal in the Portuguese capital.

Chelsea edge out Malmo as Arsenal suffer Europa League setback

"I am happy with the confidence, it wasn't easy to play with this confidence after the last match."

"We need to have continuity, consistency I think in the mental condition (in order) to be able to approach every match with the same level of determination. Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has thanked Jose Mourinho for helping him "improve as a person" despite the breakdown of their relationship in the last few months leading up to the former manager's sacking on Tuesday.

Mourinho, who replaced Dutchman Louis van Gaal in 2016, won the Europa League and League Cup in his first campaign but his third season was dominated by media reports of a rift with Pogba while United laboured on the pitch playing dull soccer.

Pogba was stripped of vice-captaincy earlier this season and dropped for the final three league games of Mourinho's tenure, but the France international said that he had no hard feelings towards the Portuguese.

"We won trophies with Jose and I want to thank him for that. Not everything worked well, but (some) things went well," Pogba told the British media.

"He makes me improve, as a person as well, and that's it. That's the past, I want to thank him for that. I'm sure that is the same for all the players."

Pogba was immediately restored to the starting line-up under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and produced two assists in Saturday's 5-1 Premier League thrashing of Cardiff City.

"The performance of the team was great and we are happy that the first game of the manager starts like this," Pogba added.

"It's important now to carry on like that. We cannot play like this and win with five goals and then the next game lose."

United, who are sixth in the standings with 29 points after 18 matches, host Huddersfield Town on Wednesday.

Chelsea said fans found guilty of racism would face the strongest possible action following allegations of anti-Semitic chanting by their supporters during their final Europa League group game against Vidi FC in Budapest on Thursday.

British media reported some Chelsea supporters chanted offensive songs about Tottenham Hotspur fans early in their 2-2 draw in Hungary.

The incident came days after four Chelsea fans were banned from their matches pending a police investigation following the alleged racist abuse of Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling last Saturday.

"Anti-Semitism and any other kind of race-related or religious hatred is abhorrent to this club and the overwhelming majority of our fans," the club said in a statement.

"It has no place at Chelsea or in any of our communities. We have stated this loud and clear on many occasions from the owner, the board, coaches and players.

"Any individuals that can't summon the brainpower to comprehend this simple message and are found to have shamed the club by using antisemitic or racist words or actions will face the strongest possible action from the club."

European soccer's governing body UEFA said they would wait to receive their official reports before launching an investigation.

"As is standard procedure, we will be waiting for official reports from the game before deciding if any action/investigation into any alleged misbehaviour should be launched," UEFA said in a statement.

Chelsea progressed to the knockout stage as Group L winners ahead of BATE Borisov in second. Vidi were eliminated after finishing third.

Europa League: Chelsea condemn alleged anti-Semitic chanting against Vidi

Sevilla cruised past Russian-league club Krasnodar 3-0 here Thursday to advance as group winners to the round of 32 of the Europa League, Europe's secondary club soccer competition.

Needing a win to guarantee themselves a place in the knockout phase, the La Liga club played with great intensity at the outset at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in front of more than 34,000 fans.

The opening score came after an ill-advised clearance by Krasnodar goalkeeper Stanislav Kritsyuk was sent back into the box to Wissam Ben Yedder, who slotted home a left-footed shot in the fifth minute.

Just five minutes later, the French striker scored his 11th goal of the season - and fourth in the Europa League - when he beat a defender to a long pass and scored once again with his left foot past Kritsyuk.

The 2-0 lead at halftime took much of the pressure off the five-time UEFA Cup and Europa League champions, who could have been eliminated from this season's competition with a draw and a victory Thursday by Belgian club Standard Liege over Turkish side Akhisarspor.

All concerns then completely evaporated with the third goal, which came in the 49th minute after another play involving Ben Yedder.

Although the Frenchman missed a chance for a hat-trick when Kritsyuk saved his close-range shot, Andre Silva followed up with a header that would have gone over the line had Cristian Ramirez not stopped it with his hand.

After Ramirez was sent off for a direct red card, Ever Banega put the finishing touch on the rout by converting from the penalty spot.

Despite the loss, Krasnodar (12 points) also booked a berth in the round of 32 on Thursday out of Group J.

Standard Liege (11 points) and Akhisarspor (one point), who played to a 0-0 draw on Thursday, failed to make it out of the group phase.

Sevilla also finished their six group-stage matches with 12 points but beat out Krasnodar based on head-to-head goal difference.

Sevilla rout Krasnodar, reach Europa League knockout phase as group winners

AC Milan were eliminated from the Europa League with a 3-1 loss here Thursday to Olympiacos, who will advance to the next stage as the second-place team in Group F.

Real Betis, the only team in Group F to have qualified for the round-of-32 at the start of the final match-day of the group stage, ended in first place despite having to settle for a 0-0 draw with Dudelange.

For the Italian side, the day represented both an opportunity to snatch the top spot from Betis and the risk of becoming the only member of the quartet of "big clubs" competing in the Europa League - Arsenal, Chelsea, Milan and Sevilla - to be eliminated in the opening phase.

More than a decade after their last taste of European glory in 2007, when they hoisted the Champions League trophy, resurgent AC Milan were counting on a successful run in the Europa League.

Things went according to plan for Milan in the first half against Olympiacos, as the teams headed to the dressing rooms knotted at 0-0.

But the horizon darkened in the 60th minute when Pape Cisse put Olympiacos up 1-0 with a header off a corner kick that seemed to catch Milan unprepared.

And the match turned downright ugly for the visitors nine minutes later with a farcical own goal by Cristian Zapata, whose attempt to block a shot sent the ball over keeper Pepe Reina and into the Milan net.

Zapata redeemed himself in the 71st by scoring a goal to reduce the deficit to 2-1, a result that would have allowed Milan to advance.

Instead, a dubious penalty call inside the final 10 minutes led to Konstantinos Fortounis' goal from the spot and the match ended 3-1.

The two clubs ended the stage tied on points at 10, but the two-goal margin was enough to secure second place for Olympiacos.

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck had an operation on Friday, a day after breaking his ankle in his side's goalless draw against Sporting Lisbon, but it remains unclear how long his recovery will take, Gunners' manager Unai Emery said on Sunday.

Speaking after Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, Emery confirmed the England international needed surgery after breaking his ankle in the midweek Europa League game.

Emery at first appeared to suggest that Welbeck could be back with the club before too long but he also made it clear that he had no idea how long the player's recovery from the "big injury" might take.

"We spoke with him yesterday and today... I think he's going to come with us in not a long time. He did the operation Friday," Emery said.

Asked if Welbeck could be back on the pitch before the end of the season next May, however, Emery said that he simply did not know.

"I think it's better the doctor say to you. It's a big injury. The doctor can say better than me," he said.

The result left Chelsea top of Group L with a maximum nine points, while BATE, PAOK Thessaloniki and Hungary's Vidi are locked on three each after Vidi enjoyed a surprise 2-0 win at PAOK.

Arsenal forward Welbeck struck the 79th-minute winner at Sporting with a crisp low shot from 15 metres through the legs of goalkeeper Renan Ribeiro, who had produced a string of good saves in a fast-paced contest.

Arsenal, who recorded their 11th successive win in all competitions to match their best run since October 2007, lead the Group E standings with nine points from three games, while second-placed Sporting are on six.

FC Zurich led and then had to come from behind to beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 at home and Zenit St Petersburg also fought back from a goal down to beat Girondins Bordeaux 2-1 at home although Artyem Dzyuba missed a penalty for the Russian side.

Two quickfire goals in the second half enabled Fenerbahce to recover from a 2-0 deficit and force a 2-2 draw at Anderlecht while Dinamo Zagreb made it three wins in a row in Group D after coming from a goal down to beat Spartak Trnava 2-1 away.

Chelsea defeated PAOK Salonika 1-0 here Thursday in the 2018-2019 Europa League opener for both teams.

The contest between the resurgent Blues and the team that finished second in the Greek top-flight last year was far more lopsided than the score would indicate.

Willian, wearing the captain's armband for the first time in an official match, got the game's only goal in the 7th minute. Taking a pass from Ross Barkley, the Brazilian waited for PAOK keeper Alexandros Paschalakis to come off his line before sliding the ball under him and into the net.

Klopp's rousing speech inspired Champions League run: Henderson

Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann struck twice as the Spanish side outclassed hapless Olympique de Marseille 3-0 on Wednesday to win the Europa League for the third time.

The scoreline mirrored the Spanish side's last Europa League final win over Athletic Bilbao in 2012 and cemented their status as one of the continent's most consistent teams since Argentine coach Diego Simeone transformed their fortunes.

The only side to overcome them in knockout European football since 2013 are arch-rivals Real Madrid, who beat them in the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals and knocked them out of the same competition in 2015 and 2017.

"They are an attacking team they work very well but we focused on our game, which was to defend well, be a tough team and take advantage of their mistakes," Griezmann told reporters.

"I left home when I was 14 years old because I wanted to win trophies, this is my second and I hope I can win more."

Marseille dominated the opening stages but gifted Atletico the lead when Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa failed to control goalkeeper Steve Mandanda's pass out and Gabi intercepted before setting Griezmann free to finish neatly in the 21st minute.

The French side wasted a chance to take a fourth-minute lead when Valere Germain skewed his shot wide with only Jan Oblak to beat and it got worse for them when playmaker Dimitri Payet left the field injured in floods of tears in the 32nd minute.

Four minutes after the re-start, Koke ran into a hole in midfield and slipped the ball to Griezmann who deftly dinked it past Mandanda, and Gabi added a late third to confirm Marseille's third defeat in as many finals in the competition.

Marseille had been emphatically beaten and could only salute their fervent supporters, who outnumbered the Spanish fans in the 59,000-capacity Groupama Stadium and let off flares and firecrackers at the start and end of the match.

"The score does not reflect the game, the more experienced team won, they know how to play these matches, they play in the Champions League regularly so we should not be ashamed of losing this match," Marseille coach Rudi Garcia said.

"Losing Dimitri was obviously a big issue for us. We lost a great player at set-pieces, if there's one part of the game where we could have been dangerous, it would have been set- pieces."

AUTOMATIC ROUTE

As well as missing out on a first European trophy since winning the Champions League in 1993, Garcia's side squandered an automatic route back into Europe's elite competition.

They now must overhaul third-placed Olympique Lyonnais, who they trail by one point in the Ligue 1 standings heading into the final weekend of the season.

Propelled by the fervent supporters who had waited 14 years to reach another European final, the French side created two early chances but striker Germain and defender Adil Rami both missed the target.

Atletico were happy to sit back in the opening stages and had one half chance which Koke skewed wide but they picked an opportune moment to strike and Griezmann's goal against the run seriously wounded Marseille.

The French side looked even more lost when Payet went off and Griezmann's supremely well-taken second goal effectively finished them off.

Marseille substitute Kostas Mitroglou struck the post with a fine late header but Atletico enjoyed a dream end to the game as captain Gabi netted the third goal and long-serving forward Fernando Torres came on for the last few minutes to end his long wait for a first trophy with his beloved club.

"I left home when I was 14 years old because I wanted to win trophies, this is my second and I hope I can win more." Marseille dominated the opening stages but gifted Atletico the lead when Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa failed to control goalkeeper Steve Mandanda's pass out and Gabi intercepted before setting Griezmann free to finish neatly in the 21st minute. We lost a great player at set-pieces, if there's one part of the game where we could have been dangerous, it would have been set- pieces." AUTOMATIC ROUTE As well as missing out on a first European trophy since winning the Champions League in 1993, Garcia's side squandered an automatic route back into Europe's elite competition.
