Brendan Rodgers admitted he doesn't know what the Europa Conference League is after Leicester's 3-2 defeat at&nbsp;Napoli&nbsp;condemned them to a place in the unheralded competition on Thursday.

Napoli&nbsp;sent Leicester crashing out of the Europa League as the Italian side advanced to the knockout stages in a dramatic conclusion to Group C.

Leicester were top of the group going into the final round of matches, but the defeat in Naples dropped them to third place, meaning they will enter UEFA's third-tier tournament in the knockout play-off round in February.

"I've got to be honest I don't even know what the competition is," Rodgers said of the Europa Conference League.&nbsp;

"I was focused on the Europa League and winning this group or at the very least finishing second. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm sure we will find out soon enough."

Napoli&nbsp;had blown a two-goal lead as Leicester hit back to level by half-time, but Eljif Elmas's second goal of the game won it for the hosts after the interval.

Spartak Moscow finished top of the group after a 1-0 win at Legia Warsaw, secured by Zelimkhan Bakaev's 17th-minute goal.

Leicester, beset by Covid-19 cases and other illnesses, would have salvaged their Europa League place if Legia's Tomas Pekhart hadn't missed a stoppage-time penalty.

Napoli&nbsp;ended in second place, two points ahead of Leicester, and will feature in the Europa League knockout round play-offs in February.

Injury-hit&nbsp;Napoli&nbsp;took the lead in the fourth minute as Adam Ounas marked his first start for the club since 2019 with a clinical low strike from just inside the penalty area.

Napoli&nbsp;struck again in the 24th minute when Andrea Petagna beat Leicester's offside trap and squared his pass to Elmas, who slotted past Kasper Schmeichel with ease.

<h2>Leicester rocked</h2>

Jonny Evans gave Leicester hope when he fired home after&nbsp;Napoli&nbsp;failed to clear James Maddison's 27th-minute free-kick.

Evans' first goal in Europe for eight years was followed in the 33rd minute by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's maiden goal for Leicester.

Maddison's free-kick was only cleared to the edge of the area, where the 23-year-old midfielder smashed a superb volley into the bottom corner.

But&nbsp;Napoli&nbsp;won it in the 53rd minute as Elmas lashed home from Giovanni Di Lorenzo's cross to continue a disappointing season for the FA Cup holders.

Rodgers could face his former club Celtic in the Europa Conference League as they finished third despite a 3-2 win over second-placed Real Betis in Group G.

However, Celtic's Japan forward Kyogo Furuhashi suffered a hamstring injury and boss Ange Postecoglou said: "It's not good. We will just wait and see what the assessment is."

Second-placed Dinamo Zagreb advanced to the knockout play-offs as Mislav Orsic's long-range curler in the third minute clinched a 1-0 victory at Group H winners West Ham, who fielded a largely inexperienced team.

Marseille, already destined for the Europa Conference League, beat Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0 in Group E, which was won by a Galatasaray team who settled for a 0-0 draw with second-placed Lazio.

Real Sociedad secured second place in Group B with a 3-0 win against PSV Eindhoven, who drop into the Europa Conference League.

Mikel Oyarzabal netted a 43rd-minute penalty and scored again in the 62nd minute before Alexander Sorloth struck in the final moments after Ibrahim Sangare's red card for PSV.

Patson Daka scored four goals to inspire Leicester City to a 4-3 comeback win at Spartak Moscow in Europa League Group C on Wednesday and keep alive the English side`s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

Leicester climbed to second in the standings on four points from three games, one ahead of third-placed Spartak and two behind Legia Warsaw, who visit bottom team Napoli on Thursday.

Zambian striker Daka, who scored his first goal for Leicester in Saturday`s 4-2 Premier League win over Manchester United, tore Spartak apart with clinical finishing after the home side had taken a 2-0 lead against the run of play.

A heavily-deflected shot from Aleksandr Sobolev put Spartak ahead in the 11th minute and Leicester missed several chances before Jordan Larsson added the second in the 44th thanks to good work from Victor Moses.

Daka reduced the arrears before halftime when he beat the offside trap and steered the ball past Spartak goalkeeper Aleksandr Maksimenko.

Daka levelled shortly after the break with a composed finish from Kelechi Icheanacho`s pass and he completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute.

It was a delightful goal as Youri Tielemans released Daka with a defence-splitting pass and the striker, who joined Leicester from RB Salzburg during the close season, side-footed his shot through Maksimenko`s legs.

Daka put the icing on the cake in the 79th minute with another sublime finish which was a carbon copy of the third goal, planting the ball past Maksimenko after he was put through by James Maddison.

The home side set up a tense finish after Sobolev slid in to steer a low Moses cross past Kasper Schmeichel four minutes from time but Leicester held on to secure a vital win.

Europa League: Four-goal Patson Daka leads Leicester City to comeback win at Spartak

Villarreal midfielder Francis Coquelin hailed his side's "special" maiden major&nbsp;trophy, secured in stunning fashion with victory over Manchester United in the&nbsp;Europa&nbsp;League&nbsp;final on Wednesday.

Playing their first ever major European final, Unai Emery's men clinched a memorable triumph 11-10 on penalties in Gdansk.

"It feels really good. It's been a very tough competition," Frenchman Coquelin told BT Sport. "What an end."

The match finished 1-1 after extra time, with Man United striker Edinson Cavani having cancelled out Gerard Moreno's first-half opener.

Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga, but the win over United sees them jump from next season's inaugural&nbsp;Europa&nbsp;Conference&nbsp;League&nbsp;into the Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;group stage.

"We didn't manage to get to the Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;through the&nbsp;league&nbsp;SO to get through with our first title is amazing," added former Arsenal midfielder Coquelin.

"Obviously to beat them in the final was something special.

"We will try to celebrate (despite Covid) because it's something special for the club."

Villarreal's only previous silverware had been the Spanish third division in 1970 and two Intertoto Cups in 2003 and 2004.

"We had a great match against one of the best teams in the world," left-back Alfonso Pedraza told RMC Sport.

"We suffered, we did not have many chances, and then it was the lottery of penalties. A title for the supporters who are here, who helped us, we obviously dedicate it to all our supporters. It's been a huge job this season.

"We knew that we would enter the Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;if we won, it's a double boost! It's a reward for this whole group, the supporters... anything is possible."

For Villarreal boss Unai Emery, it was a record fourth UEFA Cup/Europa&nbsp;League&nbsp;triumph as coach.

"This season, we have not worked on penalties in training but the players have been fabulous," he said.

"It's amazing and wonderful that everyone has scored. It is a source of pride for Villarreal, the president, the project.

"The secret is work. The players showed a great mentality throughout the competition and in the final."

Football: Villarreal bask in 'special' triumph as Emery reveals penalties not practiced

Manchester United's gut-wrenching defeat on penalties by Villarreal in the&nbsp;Europa&nbsp;League&nbsp;final re-emphasised the magnitude of the rebuilding task for coach and club hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

Exactly 22 years to the day&nbsp;since the Norwegian struck his famous winner for United in the Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;final against Bayern Munich, he was made to swallow a bitter pill after watching his side lose a match they largely controlled while, crucially, lacking bite.

David de Gea bowed his head after missing the decisive spot-kick, having seen the first 21 successfully converted, but Solskjaer's refusal to make a change until the 100th minute suggested little faith in a bench that included his injured captain Harry Maguire.

After steering United to successive top-three finishes in the Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;for the first time since Alex Ferguson retired as champion in 2013, Solskjaer had earmarked the final in Gdansk as the "stepping stone for something better to come".

Despite clearing the semi-final hurdle at the fifth attempt with a high-scoring win over Roma, Solskjaer's side mustered just two attempts on target against Villarreal, organised superbly by&nbsp;Europa&nbsp;League&nbsp;maestro Unai Emery.

While United have move forward each year under Solskjaer, at least in terms of&nbsp;league&nbsp;position, since his appointment in December 2018, catching Pep Guardiola's Manchester City next season still appears a distant prospect.

"It's not a successful season and those are the fine margins in football. Sometimes one kick can define a season as successful or a good one, and it can define it as not one," said Solskjaer.

"Trophies matter and that's what matters at this club."

The 11-10 loss on penalties came after a 1-1 draw following extra time and extended United's four-year run without a&nbsp;trophy&nbsp;-- the club's longest since the 1980s in the early days of the Ferguson era.

Solskjaer, who took the job with limited top-level management experience, has been forced to drown out the critics and naysayers while reconstructing a team that hasn't properly challenged for the title in almost a decade.

"I've been delighted with the effort, determination and desire of the players. We've probably done as well as anyone could imagine but we need to do better," he said.

"Two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and squad altogether is important for us to go further and improve."

Solskjaer overcame the disappointment of a Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;group exit to lead United to the top of the table in January, despite having overseen the club's worst home start in 48 years.

United became just the fourth team to go through an English top-flight campaign undefeated away from home, indicating the progress that is being made under his guidance.

"We need to use that disappointment. It is the worst feeling, these are the moments you remember most in your career as a player and a manager," said Solskjaer.

"You can either go on holiday and do nothing about it, or go home and come back and do better, come back hungrier."

Marcus Rashford, one of three players who started United's 2017&nbsp;Europa&nbsp;League&nbsp;final win over Ajax, vowed the pain of defeat would drive the team on even more next season.

"Second doesn't count for nothing," an impassioned Rashford told BT Sport.

"I don't want to hear 'they were so close' because it means nothing. One winner, one loser. Today we lost. We have to find out why and make sure next time we don't lose.

"We have to get rid of the disappointment and look back at the game and see what we did wrong.

"The team will not give up - no chance. The manager won't allow us to give up.

"We will come next season with bigger desire."

Gerard Moreno gave Villarreal the lead 29 minutes into the Spanish club's first European final, but Edinson Cavani equalised early in the second half before Unai Emery's team prevailed on spot-kicks, extending United's four-year&nbsp;trophy&nbsp;drought.

"It's a disappointed dressing room. That's football for you. Sometimes it's decided on one kick -- and that's the difference between winning and losing," said United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"We have to learn from it, taste this feeling and make sure we don't get it again."

He added: "We didn't turn up. We didn't play as well as we know we can."

Villarreal midfielder Francis Coquelin was delighted that the victory also led to a place in next season's Champions&nbsp;League.

"It feels really good. To play against a very good side like Manchester United, we knew it would be tough," Coquelin told BT Sport.

"We didn't manage to get to the Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;through the&nbsp;league&nbsp;so to get it through the&nbsp;Europa&nbsp;League&nbsp;is something special -- and a first title for the club as well -- something amazing."

Eric Bailly replaced the injured Harry Maguire in central defence, with the United captain surprisingly named among the substitutes despite suffering ankle ligament damage two weeks ago.

De Gea started ahead of Dean Henderson in goal, while Paul Pogba took up a more orthodox midfield role as Fred was only deemed fit enough for a spot on the bench.

An early collision between Juan Foyth and Pogba left the former Tottenham defender bloodied but both sides were slow to click into gear on a damp and chilly night on the Baltic coast.

Carlos Bacca's clever rabona cross created an opportunity for Pau Torres, the centre-back linked with a summer move to United, while Marcus Rashford tested Geronimo Rulli with a dipping effort from distance.

Yeremy Pino, who at 18 years and 218 days broke Iker Casillas' record as the youngest Spanish player to start a major European final, scuffed wide on the counter, but Villarreal were soon ahead.

Dani Parejo swung in a free-kick from the left and Moreno peeled away from Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof, steering beyond De Gea as the Swede desperately tugged at his shirt.

Moreno's 82nd goal for Villarreal equalled the club record of former Manchester United forward Giuseppe Rossi.

But it also sparked a reaction from United, as a battling Scott McTominay watched his shot deflected over before Mason Greenwood burst into the area and sent in a fizzing cross that Raul Albiol nearly diverted into his own net.

Another Parejo set-piece caused panic in the United box right after half-time, Manu Trigueros crossing back towards goal before the ball was scrambled clear with Moreno and Carlos Bacca lurking dangerously.

Alfonso Pedraza was perhaps fortunate no further action was taken when he appeared to catch Greenwood in the Villarreal area, although United benefitted from a slice of luck to level.

A headed clearance at a corner dropped to Rashford, whose dragged volley ricocheted into the path of Cavani to stab home with Rulli unable to recover after anticipating the initial shot.

It was the Uruguayan's sixth goal of the competition this season, all coming in his past four matches, and one that handed United the momentum.

Bruno Fernandes drilled wide as Cavani tried in vain to readjust with the ball flashing by, and the striker then headed straight at Torres from Shaw's miscued shot.

United continued to dominate possession as Villarreal soaked up the pressure, but the Spaniards remained a threat as Torres curled over at the end of normal time.

Alberto Moreno slashed wide as United began to tire, prompting Solskjaer to make his first change after 100 minutes as Fred replaced Greenwood.

Weariness and a raft of substitutions slowed the tempo in the closing stages as the rain intensified with penalties almost inevitable.

The first 21 penalties were successfully converted before De Gea had his attempt palmed away by Rulli as United lost for the sixth time in seven shootouts, handing Emery a record fourth&nbsp;Europa&nbsp;League&nbsp;crown.

The first 21 penalties were successfully converted before De Gea had his attempt palmed away by Rulli as United lost for the sixth time in seven shootouts, handing Emery a record fourth Europa League crown.

Manchester United vs Villarreal, Europa League Final: Four key players to watch out for in UEL showdown

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the hero of one of Manchester United's greatest European nights, will aim to guide the club to a first title in four years Wednesday against a Villarreal side coached by Europa League specialist Unai Emery.

United's last trophy came in the 2016-17 Europa League under Jose Mourinho, when they beat Ajax 2-0 in Stockholm to become just the fifth club to win all three major UEFA competitions.

Defeat to Sevilla last season was the third of four semi-final losses for Solskjaer since replacing Mourinho in December 2018, but an 8-5 aggregate win over Roma finally broke the curse.

"These are big nights for us. It might be the stepping stone for something better to come, a bright future because this team is a young team," Solskjaer, who scored the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final, said in Gdansk on Tuesday.

"It's a team that we've rebuilt over the last couple of years, so hopefully this is the start of something more.

"The players when they sign for Man United, they sign to win trophies.

"They accept the challenge of being the best because this is the best club in the world, so that's the pleasure of the pressure of Man United.

"That's something they are ready for because they wouldn't have signed here if they weren't top players."

United finished second to Manchester City in the Premier League and will go into the final as clear favourites against Villarreal, who came seventh in La Liga in Emery's first season.

Solskjaer has steered United to back-to-back top-three finishes for the first time since Alex Ferguson retired as champion in 2013.

"You can define a season tomorrow, we'll only go home happy if we win tomorrow," added the Norwegian, who is likely to be without captain Harry Maguire due to injury.

Eric Bailly could face his former club and fill in alongside Victor Lindelof at the back.

"These players are ready for this. I've seen in them something growing inside of them, more and more confident, robust and resilient to setbacks as a group. I'm confident we're ready for this."

Solskjaer said he will give Maguire as much time as possible to recover, but the England defender took no part in the final training session at Gdansk Stadium.

The United manager also has a decision to make in goal between David de Gea and Dean Henderson, who have split the eight Europa League games this term.

"It's always difficult to leave players out but it's throughout the whole season," said Solskjaer.

<h2>- Villarreal break down barriers -</h2>

Not only are Villarreal appearing in a first European final and seeking a first major trophy, but they have the added incentive of Champions League qualification at stake in Poland.&nbsp;

Villarreal spent much of their history in Spain's lower divisions before eventually reaching the top tier in 1998.

They had lost four previous European semi-finals before dumping out Arsenal in the last four, and&nbsp;are unbeaten on the continent this season, winning 12 of 14 matches.

Emery, a three-time Europa League winner with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016, said facing English opposition gave him no extra motivation despite a tricky 18-month spell with the Gunners.

"I have no thoughts of revenge against an English club or anyone else. All I do is to try and bring the best that Villarreal can achieve. It's a great club," said Emery, who also took Arsenal to the 2019 final, losing 4-1 to Chelsea in Baku.

"This competition has improved hugely and it's full of powerful teams of the top level who are desperate to win it and Villarreal has earned a place in that group."

Gerard Moreno's career-best 23 goals in La Liga this season put him level with Karim Benzema, with only Lionel Messi scoring more (30). The 29-year-old was one of two Villarreal players called up to Spain's Euro 2020 squad this week along with centre-back Pau Torres.

"For most of us this is our first European final and most important game of our careers so far. We're going to try and enjoy it," said Torres, who has been linked with a summer move to United.

Up to 9,500 spectators -- 25 percent of the stadium's roughly 40,000 capacity -- will be allowed to attend the final, with each finalist allocated 2,000 tickets.&nbsp;

Football: Solskjaer 'confident' as Man Utd, Villarreal clash in Europa League final

Mikel Arteta believes his Arsenal side can take their "biggest step forward" under his management if they end a turbulent season by booking their place in the Europa League final.

The Gunners welcome former manager Unai Emery back to the Emirates Stadium on Thursday for the second leg of their semi-final with Villarreal.

The Spanish side hold a slender 2-1 advantage from the first leg at El Madrigal, where Nicolas Pepe's penalty gave Arsenal what could prove to be a crucial away goal.

If Arsenal win they will almost certainly face Manchester United, who are on the brink of reaching the final in Gdansk after beating Roma 6-2 in the first leg of their tie.

Arsenal have not played Champions League football since 2017 but winning the Europa League would take the club back into the elite competition next season.

Arteta's team won the FA Cup in August at the end of his first season in charge but they have failed to build on that success and are 12 points off the Premier League's top four with just four games remaining.

There is also disquiet among supporters of Arsenal, who were one of six Premier League clubs to sign up to the ill-fated European Super League.

"It's a big moment," Arteta said of the second leg. "Again, not for me but for the club for everything that has happened in the last two years, in the last months.

"All the instability that we've been here with for many different reasons. So, I think it will be really important and our biggest step forward if we are able to be in that final and have the opportunity to win that trophy."

Thousands of Gunners fans vented their anger at US owner Stan Kroenke before the recent defeat to Everton at the Emirates.

With Swedish billionaire Daniel Ek publicly talking about a potential takeover bid, another protest has been mooted ahead of Thursday's match.

Arteta said he had no problems with supporters making their opinions heard but did not want to see a repeat of the disruption by fans that led to the postponement of Manchester United's match against Liverpool at the weekend.

"I think that they have to be able to express themselves and if it's done in a specific way, then they have the right to do it," he said.

"We have to prepare for the game in the best possible way. I wouldn't like to use any excuses. If something happens with that, then I know that the only purpose of the fans is to defend the club and that they want the best for the team. We will try to do the same."

Arteta urges Arsenal to take 'biggest step forward' and reach Europa final

Having steered his side to four semi-finals, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not progressed past the last four in any cup competition as Manchester United coach, with his next chance to end that hoodoo against a team he has fond memories of facing.

Domestic progress has been made, with United in a strong position to finish second in the Premier League this season after coming sixth and third in the previous two campaigns. However, the trophy cabinet remains empty.

What is more frustrating for fans desperate for the club to clinch their first piece of silverware since the 2017 Europa League under Jose Mourinho is United keep getting so close.

Whether it be the two League Cup semi-final defeats to Manchester City, the one to Chelsea in the FA Cup last year, or the last-four Europa League loss to Sevilla shortly after, United have found a way to stumble at the last under Solskjaer.

Victory over Granada in this season`s last eight has given Solskjaer a fifth opportunity to go all the way to the final, with AS Roma the latest to try prolong the Norwegian`s agony.

But clashes with Roma elicit fond European memories for Solskjaer, as the Italian side were his last opponent as a player in Europe for United.

Having lost the first leg of the 2006-07 Champions League quarter-final 2-1 in Rome, United thrashed the Italians 7-1 in the return match, with Solskjaer coming on as a second-half substitute.

"I started the first leg, but can`t remember if I finished it because we played with 10 men and dug out a good result," Solskjaer told a news conference on Wednesday.

"He (manager Sir Alex Ferguson) was confident we could go through but that night at Old Trafford was magical. We were on fire and showed what United can do."

Solskjaer retired from playing at the end of that campaign, and began his career in coaching with United`s academy a year later.

Now, as his third season as United coach nears its end, the transition period is over and a prolonged trophy drought will not be tolerated.

Roma were comfortable in the Serie A top four at the turn of the year, but a run of one win in their last seven league matches means they have dropped to seventh, with pressure mounting on coach Paulo Fonseca.

Elimination would surely hasten Fonseca`s exit, with reports in the Italian media linking the club with former Napoli, Chelsea and Juventus manager Maurizio Sarri.

"We definitely have a great chance to get through, we do have the better team," former United defender Wes Brown, who also played in the 7-1 win, told Reuters.

"We have been knocked out in the semi finals the last few years – I just hope the lads have learned from that.

"Getting to a final is a hurdle they really need to get over. The lads are playing well and with the experience they have had in the past they can push on. It will be great for Ole, too."

United have hit good form at the right time, losing only one of their last 21 matches in all competitions.

Solskjaer out to end semi-final hoodoo against familiar face

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Wednesday brushed aside suggestions the Europa League had been devalued after the club`s owners attempted to form a breakaway Super League, saying their goal was to win the trophy again.

The Super League proposal collapsed last week in the face of immense pressure from fans, governing bodies and governments, forcing most of the founding members to withdraw their support.

United started the season in the Champions League this season where they were knocked out in the group stage and dropped down to the second-tier Europa League, a competition they won in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

"We`ve had a great night in this tournament before. Our focus is on ending the season with a celebration. As soon as we went out of the Champions League, our focus was getting to a final," Solskjaer told reporters ahead the semi-final, first leg against AS Roma.

"With Real Sociedad and Granada, two good La Liga teams, and AC Milan and Roma, two teams with great history, we feel like we`ve been in a proper competition and have had to dig this out. We`re one step away from the big one.

"It will be a dream come true when I lift a trophy for this club as a manager. This season our ambition is to lift a trophy and celebrate. I know how much that can mean for a group going forward."

Solskjaer had upset Roma fans after qualifying for the semi-finals when he said he did not know them and had not seen them play.

The Italian club`s supporters put up posters with Solskjaer`s quote followed by the words "Make sure he remembers us" but the Norwegian said he meant no disrespect.

"That was straight after the (quarter-final) game, I was just relieved we had gone through. I have watched them but not analysed in depth to give them enough respect," Solskjaer said.

"Roma is a fantastic club with a great history. I have (Francesco) Totti and (Daniele) De Rossi shirts back home that are signed and prized possessions. We have analysed them since we drew them, we are ready for them."

Solskjaer said there were no new injuries since their goalless league draw with Leeds United in the Premier League over the weekend. Marcus Rashford and Eric Bailly are both fit but Anthony Martial remains injured.

Super League proposal has not devalued Europa League: Man Utd's Solskjaer

Paul Pogba returned from injury to score the winner as Manchester United beat AC Milan 1-0 on Thursday to advance to the Europa League quarter-finals 2-1 on aggregate.

World Cup winner Pogba had been sidelined for over five weeks with a hamstring injury.

But the 28-year-old Frenchman scored four minutes after coming off the bench at the start of the second half in the last 16, second leg clash at the San Siro.

Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer welcomed Pogba's return as "a big, big boost for us".

"The boys have done remarkable without Paul but we know his qualities.

"He makes a very, very big difference to us. Paul has been working really hard, but you could see he couldn't play more han 45 minutes.

"We had to readdress a couple of things in the second half when I think we were much, much better

"We want to go all the way, it was hard to lose in the semi-finals (last year)."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic also returned from a thigh injury for Milan, the Swede coming on after an hour but despite threatening could not find a way past his former club.

"This elimination is a big disappointment," said coach Stefano Pioli.

"We played like a great team but we should have scored a goal in the first half tonight.

"Manchester are a very strong team that got to the semi-finals of the Europa League last year, a team that beat Manchester City 10 days ago.

"It's tough be we have to bounce back immediately in the league."

Milan had a slight advantage against 2017 winners United thanks to Simon Kjaer's stoppage-time away goal in the first leg at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer named&nbsp;an unchanged side from the first leg, sticking with the team that beat West Ham at the weekend in the Premier League.

Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani remained out injured but Marcus Rashford returned as a starter, with Pogba and Donny van de Beek back on the bench.

Samu Castillejo pulled a pass back for Franck Kessie after 25 minutes, but a Victor Lindelof sliding tackle averted the danger for United.

Pogba downs Milan to send Man United into Europa League last eight

Simon Kjaer's last-gasp equaliser gave AC Milan a dramatic 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Thursday, handing the Italians a great chance of reaching the Europa League quarter-finals while Roma, Tottenham and Arsenal cruised closer to the last-eight.

Kjaer netted with a bullet header in the final seconds of stoppage time of the last 16, first leg encounter at Old Trafford, levelling the scores after Amad Diallo had opened in the 50th minute with his first United goal.

"This is a great result, we played really well, showed personality and I think we dominated," the defender told Sky Sport Italia.

Milan called the shots early on and had two goals disallowed, Rafael Leao's effort ruled offside and Franck Kessie's powerful 11th-minute finish chalked off after a VAR review showed the ball had glanced off the midfielder's arm before his shot.

Diallo's introduction at half-time proved an inspired move from United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the 18-year-old Ivorian, recently bought by United from Milan's Serie A rivals Atalanta, soon broke the deadlock.

Bruno Fernandes unfurled a delightful long pass towards Diallo, who made an incisive run behind the Milan defence and looped a clever backwards header over Gianluigi Donnarumma.

But United failed to build on that lead and Milan's intelligent play was rewarded with just seconds remaining when Kjaer powered his header past Dean Henderson from a corner.

<h2>- Roma, Spurs, and Arsenal cruise -</h2>

Milan's domestic rivals Roma made sure it was a good night for Italian football with a 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Lorenzo Pellegrini prodded home the opener in the 23rd minute after latching on to Pedro's through ball.&nbsp;

Shakhtar pressed for a leveller after the break but quick-fire goals from Stephan El Shaarawy -- his first for Roma since returning from China -- and Gianluca Mancini gave Paulo Fonseca's side a strong lead to defend in the second leg.

The win will have been particularly sweet for Fonseca, who came to Roma from Shakhtar in the summer of 2019.&nbsp;

A Harry Kane double helped Tottenham Hotspur ease to a 2-0 home win over Dinamo Zagreb that continues a good run of form for Jose Mourinho's team.

Spurs have now won their last five matches in all competitions thanks to Thursday's victory in London.

"We had some ups and downs in the season but we come into an important period now and it is good to feel the players are ready to help the team," said Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris.

Arsenal also came away with a win, 3-1 at Olympiakos which all but secures their passage into the quarters.

Martin Odegaard's first Arsenal goal was cancelled out by Youssef El-Arabi.

But two goals in six minutes from Gabriel Magalhaes and substitute Mohamed Elneny earned victory.

Molde's heartening European run looks to have come to an end after a 2-0 defeat at La Liga side Granada.

<h2>- Rangers, Ajax well placed -</h2>

Rangers are well placed to make the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw away to Slavia Prague.

Filip Helander's close-range finish in the first half levelled Nicolae Stanciu's superb opener and left Steve Gerrard's Rangers still in the hunt for a European trophy with the draw in Prague, days after winning their first Scottish League title in 10 years.

The highlight of the match however was Allan McGregor's stunning save near the end, the Scot somehow stopping and holding on to Lukas Masopust's thumping header, which looked destined for the bottom corner.

"I saw it a wee bit late. It's just one of these things," McGregor told BT Sport.

"You react to it, you stick your hand out and hope it doesn't go in, and it never, so happy days!"

Four-time European champions Ajax are almost guaranteed a place in the last eight after thumping Young Boys 3-0 in Amsterdam through goals from Davy Klaassen, Dusan Tadic and Brian Brobbey.

Villarreal also look good to make the quarters thanks to a 2-0 win at Dynamo Kiev.

Milan grab Europa League last 16 edge at United as Tottenham, Arsenal shine

Bruno Fernandes scored twice as Manchester United romped to a 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad in their Europa League last-32 first leg on Thursday, while Gareth Bale impressed for Tottenham in a 4-1 thrashing of Austrian side Wolfsberg.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United are all but into the last 16, with four 'away' goals to take into the return game in a week's time, after the first leg was played in Turin due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

"We know 4-0 is a good result but we have to be aware of what they can do," Fernandes told BT Sport. "My target is to score the most goals I can, that is my position. The only target is to win trophies."

The Premier League outfit grabbed the lead in the 27th minute when Fernandes pounced on a defensive mix-up to slot in from Marcus Rashford's clipped pass.

Solskjaer's men doubled their advantage 12 minutes into the second period as Fernandes stroked home his 21st goal of the season.

The effort was initially ruled out for offside before the linesman's decision was overruled by VAR.

United continued to play at a pace Sociedad could not deal with and Rashford finally got his goal in the 65th minute following a blistering counter-attack started by goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

The tie was surely put to bed in the final minute of normal time as Daniel James raced clear and fired into the bottom corner.

<h2>- Bale strikes -</h2>

Bale's agent Jonathan Barnett had said on Wednesday the Wales winger was "towards the end of his career", after Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho had questioned the player's Instagram post suggesting he was in good health despite being unavailable for Spurs' FA Cup defeat at Everton last week.

But Bale notched his first Tottenham assist since April 2013 to tee up Son Heung-min for the opening goal in Budapest against Wolfsberg, before drilling in the second before the half-hour mark.

A wonderful individual strike from Lucas Moura extended Spurs' first-half lead, and although Michael Liendl pulled one back for the Austrians with a second-half penalty, the English club have one foot in the next round after Carlos Vinicius' 88th-minute goal.

"I have a really close relationship with him (Bale)," said Son. "I'm very happy he's getting game time and scored a goal and got an assist. I really enjoy playing with him."

Mourinho has never lost a knockout tie in the competition, which he won with Porto in 2003 and Man United in 2017.

<h2>- Milan, Arsenal held -</h2>

AC Milan, who have not reached the quarter-finals of any European competition since the 2011-12 Champions League, had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Red Star Belgrade.

Milan, who face Inter in a top-of-the-table Serie A derby on Sunday, were pegged back as Milan Pavkov netted a dramatic 93rd-minute leveller for Red Star, who played the closing stages with 10 men.

Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka continued his excellent season as his sixth goal of the campaign cancelled out Pizzi's penalty in a 1-1 draw against Benfica at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

"I feel like I'm improving every game. I'm trying to impress, trying to learn," said Saka. "I just want to keep progressing."

Ligue 1 leaders Lille conceded twice in the final three minutes to lose 2-1 at home to Ajax.&nbsp;

Timothy Weah, son of former Ballon d'Or winner George, put the French team ahead with 18 minutes to play, but Dusan Tadic's penalty and a goal from teenager Brian Brobbey put the Dutch champions on top after the first leg.

"It's good that I scored but I'm not happy because we didn't win," Weah told RMC Sport.

Leicester, sitting third in the Premier League, were held to a goalless draw at Slavia Prague, but there was plenty of excitement elsewhere.

Bayer Leverkusen fought back from three goals down only to lose 4-3 to Young Boys in Bern, while Olympiakos beat PSV Eindhoven 4-2 in Piraeus.

Borna Barisic netted two penalties, including the winning goal in the last minute, as Steven Gerrard's Rangers snatched a thrilling 4-3 victory at Royal Antwerp.

Molde came back from 3-1 down to draw with Hoffenheim, while Edin Dzeko's early goal helped Roma to a 2-0 win at 10-man Braga and Napoli lost 2-0 to Granada.

United needed a draw to qualify for the last 16 but were punished for a sloppy start and slumped to a 3-2 defeat, a result that left them third in the group to ensure they drop down to Europe's second-tier competition.

"The teams that drop from the Champions League are strong and normally don't belong to the level of the Europa League," Mourinho, who guided United to the Europa League trophy in 2017, told reporters ahead of Thursday's home game against Antwerp.

"United are one of the top teams. The group was very hard with Paris St Germain and Leipzig. We knew it was not going to be easy for any of them."

Mourinho went on to condemn the incident that took place during the PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir match. The match was suspended in the 13th minute when fourth official Sebastian Coltescu was accused of directing a racist term towards the Turkish club's assistant coach.

"Every form of racism has to be fought and never accepted," he said. "To be involved, indirectly, not directly in the game that will become quite iconic is not a nice thing. The fourth official only he can express his feelings.

"Of course, he made an unacceptable mistake but only he can open his heart, apologise and accept the consequences."

The sparse crowd in a 60,000 capacity stadium were well distanced between two stands and in high spirits despite the Gunners' poor form of late in the English top-flight.

"I'm delighted to have fans back they make a huge difference," said Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta.

"We had 2,000 but they were loud and they were supportive to the team so thanks to them for coming and making the effort."

Outside the ground before kick-off fans held up a banner reading: "Home at last, Thank you NHS" in tribute to those working on the front line battling coronavirus in the health service.

Arsenal's last home match with a crowd was back in March prior to a three-month stoppage of the sport due to the pandemic.&nbsp;

Since returning in June, English top-flight football has been played behind closed doors with Arsenal fans missing out on seeing their side win the FA Cup and Community Shield at Wembley.

"It's been a long nine months since the last game," said Javed Singh. "I'm excited, it's a bit of a dead rubber game but good to be back in the stadium. Just great to see a game in person."

Despite Arsenal having already booked their place in the Europa League knockout stages, demand from fans to be one of the lucky few back through the gates crashed the club website on Saturday morning.

"It's one of those games you will look back on that we were the first ones in the stadium," said Dan Anderson, who attended the game with his brother as normal.

"It's just getting back to normal. You work hard all week and to have that reward to be able to go to a game at the weekend or at night is what you want."

However, it was not a return to normality for everyone. Pubs that would typically be crammed with fans on matchday around the stadium remained shut with&nbsp;London still under tier two restrictions meaning alcohol cannot be served without food.

Restrictions remain even tighter in other parts of England in Tier three such as Manchester and Birmingham where fans remain shut out.

"Football is all about you, the fans - we have missed you and we are so happy to be welcoming you back," said Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a video played before kick-off.

<h2>- Gunnersauras saved from extinction -</h2>

Club mascot Gunnersaurus was also back after the controversy that saw the club employee, Jerry Quy, who played the role since 1993, let go amid cost-cutting measures before Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil stepped in to cover his salary.

Playing an entire season without crowds would cost Premier League clubs an estimated £700 million ($941 million) and the need to make the most of the fans' return was evident with Arsenal's "Armoury" club shop reopened.

The atmosphere inspired a much-changed side on the field as Arteta looked ahead of Sunday's North London derby against Premier League leaders Tottenham.

Spurs were the target of the first chants once the action got underway, showing some things never change no matter the circumstances.

There was soon something to cheer as Alexandre Lacazette smashed in a stunning long-range strike top open the scoring on 10 minutes and ran to celebrate in front of the fans.

"It's just great to have that sound back and have our 12th man back," said Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Pablo Mari quickly headed home a second on his first appearance since March.

Eddie Nketiah added a third before half-time before Kohya Kitagawa's consolation for the Austrians drew pantomime boos from the crowd.

Substitute Emile Smith Rowe rounded off the scoring on a night that will be best remembered for what happened off the field.

Napoli's players honoured club legend Diego Maradona on Thursday by stepping out onto the pitch wearing his number 10 jersey before their 2-0 Europa League win over Rijeka.

"Diego is a legend and will never die," said Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso.

"Since yesterday you could see that the city breathed a different atmosphere.

"We hope to dedicate something important to him and win a trophy.

"In this city we have talked about it for too many years."

Rijeka did not spoil the tribute with Napoli beating their modest rivals thanks to an own-goal from the visitor's Italian left-back Armando Anastasio before the break.

The Naples-born player took a touch to a Matteo Politano goal-bound effort, and was credited with the goal.&nbsp;

Hirving Lozano sealed victory with quarter of an hour to go, firing in a Lorenzo Insigne cross.

Gattuso's side ended their two-match losing streak at their home stadium to take top place in Group F with Rijeka bottom without a win in four games.

"I have many good memories," recalled Gattuso.

"I had the opportunity to talk many times with Diego, to have dinner several times with him.&nbsp;

"He has done so many extraordinary things. He made mistakes in his private life, but for what he did he will remain always alive.&nbsp;

"Diego came from another planet and he will live forever like all legends.

"I would have liked to tackle him as a player," added former Italy World Cup winner Gattuso.

Captain Insigne had earlier led the tributes alongside fans gathered outside the San Paolo Stadium before the game, Napoli's first since Maradona's death at the age of 60 on Wednesday.

All wearing black armbands, the team also wore Maradona's iconic jersey during the team presentation and minute's silence, under a photo projected on a large screen of the man who led Napoli to league titles in 1987 and 1990 and the UEFA Cup in 1989.

Throughout the day, supporters thronged in front of the San Paolo stadium, which could soon be renamed in honour of Maradona.&nbsp;

"I believe it is right to baptise the San Paolo with your name to still have you with us," wrote club president Aurelio de Laurentiis on the club's website.

A plaque was put up on the gates of the stadium which read "Diego Armando Maradona Stadium" and bore the face of the fans' Argentine hero.

Blue-white scarves, flowers, photos of Maradona and shirts stamped with number 10 were left in memory of the player whose seven seasons between 1984-1991 left an indelible mark on Neapolitans.

An hour before kick-off, there were still several hundred fans singing in front of the stadium.

Other Neapolitans, even more numerous, gathered in Piazza del Plebiscito in the centre of Naples.&nbsp;

Shortly before the match, Insigne and former Napoli storekeeper, Tommaso Starace, left the stadium to join the tributes by laying a wreath at the foot of the gates.

"Maradona means a lot, not just to me but to all Neapolitans. He has always stood up for us, he has always held us in his heart and we must do the same," said Insigne.

A few hundred fans remained outside the stadium during the game but most left before kick-off.

'Diego will never die:' Napoli honour Maradona with Europa League win

Tottenham Hotspur slumped to a shock 1-0 Europa League defeat at Royal Antwerp on Thursday, while Serie A leaders AC Milan eased to victory over Sparta Prague.

Jose Mourinho's Spurs failed to create a single chance of note in a lifeless display, with Gareth Bale, who rejoined the club on loan from Real Madrid in the close-season, lasting less than an hour before being substituted.

The surprise win takes Antwerp to the top of the early Group J table after their opening 2-1 victory at Ludogorets last week.

The Belgian outfit are playing in the main stage of a European competition for the first time since a UEFA Cup first-round loss to Newcastle United in 1994.

The hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark, with Dieumerci Mbokani robbing makeshift Spurs centre-back Ben Davies before feeding Israeli forward Lior Refaelov to drill a fierce shot into the corner.

Antwerp wasted a golden chance to double the lead in the 54th minute, as Congolese striker Mbokani contrived to fire the ball over an open net when only three yards from goal.

Mourinho threw on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min for Bale and Dele Alli in search of an equaliser, but again it was their opponents who should have scored when Norwegian wing-back Simen Jukleroed ran clean through on goal and blazed wildly over the bar.

Spurs dominated possession but never seriously threatened, and the Antwerp players were able to celebrate a famous triumph in an empty stadium.

Milan made it two wins from two in Group H with a 3-0 success over Sparta, despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic missing a first-half penalty.

Goals from Brahim Diaz, Rafael Leao and on-loan Manchester United wing-back Diogo Dalot saw Milan extend their unbeaten run to 24 matches in all competitions.

Stefano Pioli's side sit two points clear of Lille at the top of the group, after the French outfit fought back from two goals down to grab a 2-2 home draw with Celtic.

Jamie Vardy netted a spot-kick as Leicester City made it back-to-back victories in Group G with a 2-1 win at AEK Athens, while Paco Alcacer scored a late double as Villarreal saw off Qarabag 3-1 in Group I.

Spurs stunned by Antwerp, Milan cruise to victory

Tottenham Hotspurs boss Jose Mourinho was left fuming after a disappointing loss in the Europa League against Royal Antwerp on Thursday. The London-based club was beaten 1-0.&nbsp;

The Portuguese manager made nine changes to the lineup from Monday’s 1-0 Premier League win at Burnley. However, an error from defender Ben Davies allowed Antwerp forward Lior Refaelov to score and take lead within the first 30 minutes.

Dele Alli, Steven Bergwijn, Giovani lo Celso and Carlos Vinicius were all replaced at halftime but Spurs were unable to get back on level terms. It was their first defeat since losing 1-0 to Everton on the Premier League’s opening weekend in September.

“I would like to have made 11 changes at halftime,” Mourinho told reporters. “I didn’t make five as I was afraid of a long 45 minutes.

“I always like to think the players deserve an opportunity. We have a big squad with lots of good players,” he added.

“It’s my responsibility to give them opportunities but it’s also their opportunity to catch the chance with both hands and ask for more.

“Tonight shows my future choices are going to be very easy.”

An emotional Lille head coach Christophe Galtier, after his team’s Europa League match against Celtic on Thursday, said that France is “bruised” after a “cowardly” knife attack in Nice where three people were killed in a church as President Emmanuel Macron termed it as “Islamist terrorist attack”.

Galtier while offering condolences to the friends, families and relatives of the people who were murdered in the incident said it was a difficult day for him personally and added that he would have avoided working on the day if it was in his hands.&nbsp;

France 'bruised' after 'cowardly' terror attack in Nice: Lille coach Galtier

Gareth Bale helped Tottenham to an opening 3-0 victory over LASK of Austria in their Europa League campaign on Thursday but Celtic suffered another setback with a home 3-1 loss at the hands of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's AC Milan.

There were also wins for Spurs' Premier League rivals Arsenal and Leicester which left English sides looking back on a promising week in Europe with six victories and one draw from Champions League and Europa League games.

Despite Bale starting for the first time since his return from Real Madrid, it was on-loan Carlos Vinicius who made an impressive debut as Tottenham enjoyed a 3-0 win in their Group J opener.

Vinicius started in place of the resting Harry Kane and he made goals in either half for Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min, while he would have also netted himself had Andres Andrade not scored an own goal.

Bale made that goal where Andrade put through his own net.

Leicester made the perfect start in Group G with a comfortable 3-0 win over Zorya Luhansk of Ukraine.

James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho were on the scoresheet.

In Glasgow, Celtic struggled against Serie A leaders Milan who were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Rade Krunic and Brahim Diaz.

Mohamed Elyounoussi reduced the arrears after the break, but Jens Petter Hauge broke clear to secure Milan's Group H win in stoppage time.

Milan were so comfortable that they could afford to take Ibrahimovic off just after the hour.

Earlier Thursday, Arsenal came from behind to down Rapid Vienna 2-1 and Rangers beat Standard Liege 2-0.

Arsenal, the 2019 finalists under Unai Emery, were struggling to make an impact in Austria.

After a goalless first half they went behind when keeper Bernd Leno fluffed a clearance on a night he will want to forget.

Taxiarchis Fountas capitalised on Leno's clanger, much to the joy of the 3,000 home fans allowed in to watch under coronavirus safety protocol, but the Gunners then turned the game around in four second half minutes.

David Luiz put them level with a deft glancing header off Nicolas Pepe's free-kick, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then tapping home to bag the three Group B points.

It was an eventful night for Mikel Arteta's side with alongside eight yellow cards an eye catching display from Thomas Partey on his first start since his transfer deadline day move from Atletico Madrid.

A frustrated follower of the game from his London sofa was Mesut Ozil, who has been left out of both Arsenal's Europa League and Premier League squad.

"When I can't support on the pitch tonight, I will support in front of the TV in London." tweeted Ozil.

The other Group B game was being played out in Dublin where Dundalk, only Ireland's third ever representative in the group stage, were beaten 2-1 by Norwegians Molde.

In Belgium, Steven Gerrard's Rangers took on Standard Liege fresh from their Old Firm derby win over Celtic which moved them four points clear in the Scottish Premiership last weekend.

With the rain coming down, James Tavernier scored from the spot after Noe Dussenne handled in the area to put them into a 19th minute lead.

Then three minutes into stoppage time Kemar Roofe produced a wonder goal from the halfway line, the ball flying over the head of bewildered keeper Arnaud Bodart.

Benfica had claimed the first goal of the night and they went on to beat Lech Poznan in Poland 4-2 in the other Group D game.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen ran riot 6-2 against French side Nice and Spanish side Granada, in their first ever European campaign, beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1.

Gareth Bale helped Tottenham to an opening 3-0 victory over LASK of Austria in their Europa League campaign on Thursday but Celtic suffered another setback with a home 3-1 loss at the hands of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's AC Milan.

- Ozil TV support - Earlier Thursday, Arsenal came from behind to down Rapid Vienna 2-1 and Rangers beat Standard Liege 2-0.

Watch: 24 penalty kicks! AC Milan and Rio Ave involved in insane Europa League qualifier match

Two years on from the embarrassment of being sacked as coach of his country on the eve of a World Cup, Julen Lopetegui has rebuilt his reputation to take Sevilla back to a sixth Europa League final in 14 years.

The Spaniards' success in Europe's second-tier competition is no longer a surprise despite the continued churn of players and coaches without the wealth of the continent's superclubs.

However, a return to the Europa League final for the first time since 2016 on top of a first top-four finish in La Liga for three seasons, is sweet vindication for Lopetegui after a nightmare few months in 2018 threatened to derail his coaching career.

Hopes were high that the former Real Madrid and Barcelona goalkeeper could produce one last hurrah from Spain's golden generation that had won three major tournaments from 2008 to 2012 ahead of the World Cup in Russia.

Spain were unbeaten in Lopetegui's 20 games in charge of the national team, including impressive wins over Argentina, Italy, Belgium and eventual world champions France.

But he paid a heavy price for his own misjudgement and the politics of Spanish football as he accepted the role as Zinedine Zidane's successor at Real Madrid days before the tournament got underway.

Furious Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales fired him two days before Spain's opening match against Portugal in a move that did neither side much good.

Lopetegui returned home a haunted figure as he was presented at the Santiago Bernabeu just a day later and Spain limped out on penalties to Russia in the last 16 after winning just one match in four.

The decision to take the Madrid job was even more misguided as Lopetegui lasted just 14 games and was sacked again by late October.

Sevilla offered a shot at redemption, but also came with a risk. Monchi's return as sporting director kicked off a huge turnover of the playing staff as 17 new players arrived and 28 departed over the course of the season.

Among those to leave were top scorers Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia and replacing them has proved problematic with Lucas Ocampos and Munir El Haddadi the only players to reach double figures for goals this season.

But Lopetegui has constructed a hard team to beat as is evidenced by a club record run of 20 games without defeat either side of a three-month shutdown due to coronavirus.

Only Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid had a better defensive record in La Liga this season and Bruno Fernandes's penalty in the semi-final is the only goal Sevilla they have conceded in three knockout games since arriving in Germany against Roma, Wolves and Manchester United.

"There are always doubts until you really know the coach," Monchi told Marca.&nbsp;

"Julen has pleasantly surprised me. Everyone told me that he was very professional and he's won me over. When I see someone like him I fall in love, so I'm very happy to work with him."

The team-spirit Lopetegui has fostered was clearly on show during the semi-final as Sevilla rode their luck, but showed no little heart to beat United 2-1 with a fraction of the budget of the English giants.

Despite the empty stands in Cologne, Sevilla were roared on by an enthusiastic crowd of substitutes, team directors and staff compared to the largely silent and bemused United contingent.

"We know we have created our own strong and loud support," said Lopetegui of the encouragement from the sidelines.

"It was been a difficult but also a beautiful year," he added on a first season in Seville that is now into its 13th month.

"The team has had the possibility to grow, overcoming obstacles, because of their hard work, solidarity and team spirit."

Sevilla will need to be the better unit again in Friday's final against another European giant with better individuals in Inter Milan.

But after five wins in five previous finals, Sevilla can never be underestimated in the Europa League.

Discarded by Spain and Real Madrid, Lopetegui finds salvation at Sevilla

Antonio Conte will head into the Europa League final aiming to win a major trophy in his first season in charge of Inter Milan and extend the barren spell of his Sevilla rival Julen Lopetegui when they clash in Cologne on Friday.

The difference in fortunes could not be starker as Conte won three successive Serie A titles with Juventus followed by the 2016-17 Premier League title with Chelsea, while Lopetegui has been unable to claim a single honour at senior level as coach.

The former Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper oversaw the longest trophy-less spell at Portuguese side Porto between 2014-2016 before taking charge of Spain, where he was dismissed a week before the 2018 World Cup having steered his country to the finals.

Lopetegui made way for Fernando Hierro after it was announced he’d be taking over at Real Madrid in August 2018. He only held on to the job until October that year after suffering a 5-1 La Liga thrashing by Barcelona.

The current season finally brought some joy to the 53-year-old, who guided Sevilla to a top-four finish in La Liga and then reached the Europa League final with a combative side whose work rate exceeds its talent.

Sevilla and Inter have won eight titles in Europe’s second-tier competition between them, with the Spanish side chasing a record-extending sixth trophy against their in-form rivals.

Lopetegui conceded denying Inter would be a tall order.

“The team has a very characteristic way of playing, all Conte teams have it,” he told Sevilla’s official website http://www.sevillafc.es.

“It is not easy for such high level players to play in such a peculiar collective way. The squad is full of players with a talent, they will oblige us to play an extraordinary game.

“They are at a magnificent level, a team made to play Champions League football who finished just one point off (Italian champions) Juventus in Serie A, they have magnificent players and an experienced manager.”

Sevilla will need to draw inspiration from their gritty 2-1 win over Manchester United, with Inter strikers Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez in devastating form as they ripped apart Shaktar Donestk 5-0 in the other semi-final.

Conte acknowledged the goal-hungry pair had developed a lethal partnership since Lukaku joined from United last year despite their individual appetites.

“It was inevitable that, working hard and working together, a connection between the two would develop,” Conte told UEFA’s official website.

“They have the typical selfishness of all strikers, but they also work hard to help the others score.

“We’re playing a team with more experience and the most trophies in this competition in the last decade. It’s a final and only the best teams reach the final, so we need to show that we’re the best if we want to win the trophy.”

Conte out to extend Lopetegui's trophy jinx

Inter Milan are destined for "great things" under Antonio Conte, according to Lautaro Martinez after the Argentine and Romelu Lukaku both scored twice to thrash Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 in Dusseldorf and reach the Europa League final.

Danilo D'Ambrosio was also on target for the Italian giants, who will face Sevilla in Friday's final in Cologne.

Inter have endured a lean decade since winning the Champions League in 2010, but closed the gap on Juventus at the top of Serie A to just one point in Conte's first season in charge and are now one win away from a first trophy in nine years.

Martinez and Lukaku's prolific partnership has been the source of much of Inter's success and they took their tally to a combined 54 for the season.

"It was an incredible night, something we have been dreaming of," said Martinez, who has been strongly linked with a move to be Luis Suarez's successor at Barcelona.

"We proved that Inter are ready for great things, we are ready for the final."

After a slow start, Martinez put Inter on course for their 10th European final as he powered home Nicolo Barella's cross to open the scoring on 19 minutes.

Shakhtar are one of European football's great survivors as the Ukrainian champions continue to thrive despite not playing a match in their home city of Donetsk for six years due to a war in eastern Ukraine between government forces and Russian-backed separatists.

Luis Castro's men had scored 14 goals in five Europa League games since dropping into the competition form the Champions League, but their talented array of Brazilian forwards barely laid a glove on a characteristically well-organised Conte defence.

&nbsp;

"Don't get fooled by the result," said Conte. "We were good not allowing them to play the way they wanted. The lads played exactly how a European game should be played."

Shakhtar had one golden chance to level when Mykola Matviyenko's cross picked out Junior Moraes, but the Brazilian-born Ukrainian international's header was too close to Samir Handanovic.

Two minutes later, Inter landed the killer blow when D'Ambrosio met Marcelo Brozovic's corner with a powerful header.

"When Inter scored their second goal we simply collapsed," said Castro. "After 2-0 we made so many terrible mistakes."

Only a brilliant save from 36-year-old Andriy Pyatov had denied Martinez classy second with a lob long range early in the second half, but he gave the veteran 'keeper no chance to set himself with brilliant quick hit for his 21st goal of the season.

Lukaku extended his run of scoring in now 10 straight Europa League game 12 minutes from time as this time Martinez played provider before his strike partner slotted low into the far corner.

Five minutes later the former Manchester United striker had his 33rd goal of the campaign by accelerating away from a slow Shakhtar backline before firing through Pyatov's legs.

"I'm a forward and I'm here to score, it's something inside me," said Lukaku, who showed United the predatory instincts they were lacking in a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla in the other semi-final on Sunday.

Conte is famous for his high demands of his players, but Lukaku believes the hard work Inter did before Italian football's return from a three-month shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic is bearing fruit.

"We worked really hard in the camp," added Lukaku. "It's tough but you see the results of the hard work. We want to keep going."

Lukaku, Martinez fire five-star Inter into Europa League final

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire insisted the "best side lost" after the English giants were beaten 2-1 by Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals on Sunday.

"The boys are devastated. We created numerous chances. The best team lost. They punished us for missing chances. They didn't make many chances to be honest," Maguire told broadcaster BT Sport.

Bruno Fernandes's early penalty was cancelled out by Suso's strike for five-time winners Sevilla.

But United made and wasted almost all the big chances after the break as Bono produced a string of stunning saves until substitute Luuk De Jong turned home a Jesus Navas cross 12 minutes from time.

"We worked our socks off and deserved to win and get through. We fell short in a semi-final for the third time this year," added Maguire.

"Losing is not acceptable. Getting to semi-finals isn't acceptable. We have to take it to the next step."

The defeat means United are now without a trophy in three seasons while Sevilla go on to face either Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk in the final.

"We want to win silverware as soon as possible," added Maguire.

"Tonight we turned up and the best team lost. Perhaps that bit of inexperience cost us - we shouldn't have conceded that second goal."

'Best team lost': United's Maguire devastated by Europa League exit

Manchester United crashed out of the Europa League semi-finals with a 2-1 defeat by the competition’s record five-time winners Sevilla after palpable frailties throughout the season came back to haunt them at crunch time.

Poor finishing coupled with sloppy defending, which cost United points in the early stages of the Premier League, put them to the sword in a match which they dominated after Bruno Fernandes gave them a ninth-minute lead.

United’s cracks were succinctly summed up by their former trophy-laden central defender Rio Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League during the club’s golden era under Alex Ferguson.

“You don’t take ya chances you get punished. You don’t defend well you get punished. No need for insight tonight,” Ferdinand tweeted after United were condemned to their third semi-final exit of the season, following the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Ferdinand’s present day peer Harry Maguire, bought last year from Leicester City for 80 million pounds to shore up United’s leaky defence, told BT Sport: “We conceded from two crosses which is not good enough.

“Losing is not acceptable. Getting to semi-finals isn’t acceptable. We have to take it to the next step.”

A pair of innocuous-looking crosses from either flank led to Sevilla’s goals as United’s defenders, positioned like statues in their area, allowed the ball to travel across the face of goal to the scorers.

Suso swept in the equaliser and Luuk De Jong was given all the time and space in the world to slot home the winner after Victor Lindelof switched off.

Fernandes and Lindelof almost came to blows after De Jong’s goal, which summed up a miserable evening for United, who missed numerous gilt-edged chances at the other end.

Sevilla’s Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bono kept out a string of sitters but Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and, in particular, Anthony Martial will rue not putting away chances when United were on top.

“We played a great game and created a lot of chances but in football it’s not enough - we missed a lot in front of goal,” conceded Fernandes.

Shakhtar Donetsk booked a clash with Inter Milan in the Europa League semi-finals after goals from Brazilians Junior Moraes, Taison, Alan Patrick and Dodo gave them a 4-1 win over FC Basel in a one-sided last-eight clash on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian champions will take on Inter in Duesseldorf on Monday after Sunday’s semi-final in Cologne between 2017 Europa League winners Manchester United and Sevilla, who have won Europe’s second-tier competition a record five times.

The final is set for Aug. 21 in Cologne.

Sevilla clinched their berth with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in Tuesday’s other quarter-final thanks to a late goal by Lucas Ocampos.

Shakhtar, who won Europe’s second-tier club competition in 2009, missed a string of chances to triumph by an even bigger margin as they dominated the match with crisp one-touch passing and superior close control.

Moraes headed the Ukrainian side into a second-minute lead after a howler by Basel’s Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Nikolic, who was beaten to the ball by the striker after rushing off his line to meet a Marlos corner.

Nikolic made amends with several good saves in the first half but was powerless in the 22nd minute when Taison capped a lightning Shakhtar break with a deflected shot after good work by Marlos and a clever dummy by Patrick.

Marcos Antonio rattled the woodwork with a long-range effort in the 40th minute before Shakhtar took their foot off the pedal in the second half, content with keeping possession as their rivals chased shadows.

Still, Patrick made it 3-0 with a 75th-minute penalty after Yannick Marchand fouled livewire Taison in the area and right back Dodo added the fourth in the 89th minute, with the goal awarded after a VAR check for offside.

Substitute Ricky van Wolfswinkel netted a stoppage time consolation for Basel from close range but the Swiss side had little to cheer after being blown away by their opponents.
