Manchester United's Europa League quarter-final tie against Sevilla is finely poised after two late own goals allowed the Spanish side to leave Old Trafford with a 2-2 draw in Thursday's first leg.

Elsewhere there were narrow home wins for Juventus and Feyenoord while Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 1-1 draw by Belgian visitors Union Saint-Gilloise.

Erik ten Hag's United are the favourites to win this season's competition and they looked to be cruising towards the semi-finals as they seized a two-goal first-half lead at Old Trafford thanks to a brace by Marcel Sabitzer.

They could have been out of sight after the break but Antony hit the post at the end of a counterattack and United also saw central defensive duo Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez both come off injured.

Sevilla produced a remarkable late comeback, reducing the deficit in the 84th minute when Tyrell Malacia let a ball go past him in the box and then deflected a Jesus Navas cross into his own net.

They then equalised in the second minute of added time when a Youssef En-Nesyri header went in via a big touch off Harry Maguire, who had come on for Varane.

A Sevilla side who have won the Europa League or its predecessor the UEFA Cup a record six times may now fancy their chances of winning the tie in next week's return in Spain.

"We conceded two own goals, bad luck, and we have to deal with it," said Ten Hag. "We have to learn to kill the game, but still everything is open."

<h2>Scare for Szczesny</h2>

The winners of that tie will face either Juventus or Sporting of Portugal in the last four and the Turin giants claimed a 1-0 victory in the first leg of their quarter-final.

Federico Gatti scored the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute after Juve suffered a scare when goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny came off just before half-time when he complained of chest pains.

The Poland international was replaced by Mattia Perin who then made a brilliant double save in stoppage time at the end of the game to secure Juve's win.

"It was fear, it was something that had never happened to me before. I was struggling to breathe so I was worried and scared," said Szczesny after the game.

The Italian club said early tests showed no serious health problems for the former Arsenal goalkeeper.

Mats Wieffer scored the only goal of the game early in the second half as Dutch league leaders Feyenoord beat Jose Mourinho's Roma 1-0 in the first leg of a tie that is a repeat of last season's Europa Conference League final, won by the Italian side.

<h2>West Ham draw at Gent</h2>

Union Saint-Gilloise took the lead away to Leverkusen through a strike by Nigerian striker Victor Boniface early in the second half, only for Florian Wirtz to score a late equaliser.

In the Conference League quarter-finals, Premier League strugglers West Ham United had to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Gent in Belgium despite taking the lead in first-half stoppage time when Danny Ings tapped in a Jarrod Bowen centre.

Hugo Cuypers equalised just before the hour mark for Gent, before Nigerian starlet Gift Orban hit the bar from an overhead kick for the side who are fourth in the Belgian top flight.

Fiorentina won 4-1 away to Lech Poznan in Poland to make it 10 victories in their last 11 games in all competitions.

Nigeria's Terem Moffi scored twice, including from a stunning overhead kick, for Nice in their 2-2 draw away to Basel in Switzerland.

Michael Murillo and Majeed Ashimeru were on target as Anderlecht defeated AZ Alkmaar 2-0.

Europa League: Sevilla secure entertaining draw against Manchester United; Juventus, Feyenoord win at home

Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow in their preparation for the Europa League quarterfinal first leg against Sevilla. Starman Marcus Rashford is out for ‘few games’ according to a statement released from the club. It is suspected that Rashford is carrying a muscle injury but is expected to play for United again at the business end of the campaign.

"The forward was withdrawn in the 80th minute of Saturday's 2-0 Premier League win over Everton at Old Trafford and immediately headed to the dressing room for treatment," United said.

"Subsequent assessment of the injury suggested that Marcus will be unavailable for a few games, but is expected to be back for the season run-in."

Rashford, 25, has been in sparkling form for the club this season and has amassed 28 goals in all competitions. He was injured in the 2-0 win over Everton on the weekend and will be a big miss for the club despite having good backup options.

In the meantime, Erik ten Hag has expressed confidence in other stars to step up while Rushford is out of the team.&nbsp;

“We have many more players across the squad who can score,” the manager said when asked last month if the team was too dependent on Marcus.

Wout Weghorst is another versatile attacking option and Ten Hag has highlighted the range of other goalscoring threats available from wide positions and midfield, including Scott McTominay, who scored the first goal against Everton.

"I think we have players like Bruno, like Jadon Sancho, like Anthony Martial, like Scott McTominay, like Antony," Ten Hag said.

"We have enough players with the capabilities to score goals, definitely.”

United missed Christian Eriksen at the start of 2023, but he is back in training and expected to play in the coming days. The club is also boosted by the return of Anthony Martial, having missed a chunk of the season with an injury.

Thursday’s clash will also see the return of Casemiro, having missed domestic action due to his red card against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. He is suspended for four matches but will be available for selection on Thursday evening against Sevilla.

Europa League: Manchester United face stern Sevilla challenge in QF; Juventus handed giant-killers Sporting

Sporting Lisbon's Pedro Goncalves scored an incredible equaliser and the Portuguese team went on to knock Arsenal out of the Europa League with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory in Thursday's last 16 second leg.

Sporting trailed when Granit Xhaka gave Premier League leaders Arsenal the lead in the first half at the Emirates Stadium.

But Portugal midfielder Goncalves forced extra-time when he beat Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale with a breathtaking strike from 46 yards out.

Goncalves's audacious goal was reminiscent of David Beckham's long-range chip for Manchester United against Wimbledon that launched him to superstardom in 1996.

With reality television star Kim Kardashian and her Arsenal fan son Saint watching from the stands, a pulsating encounter ended level at 1-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate, requiring penalties to settle the tie.

It was Sporting who emerged with a shock victory as Gabriel Martinelli's effort was saved by Antonio Adan and Nuno Santos dispatched the winning kick.

"A huge blow obviously. There were moments in the first 75 minutes where we weren't at our level. We gave every ball away and we didn't have the capacity to take the game," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.

"We had big chances to finish the game. We have to look at ourselves and why we were not good enough to go through,” he added.

Adding to Arsenal's problems, defenders William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu limped off injured in the first half after Arteta tried to protect his key players by making five changes.

Arsenal haven't won a European trophy since lifting the Cup-Winners' Cup in 1994 and their wait will go on for another year.

But the Gunners would gladly swap Europa League success for a long-awaited Premier League title.

Arsenal sit five points clear of second placed Manchester City in the Premier League as they chase a first title since 2004.

"We have 11 games left. Our next game with Palace is a final. All the work we do right now has to be towards Palace. We have to be better than this game," Arteta said.

Arteta had fielded a strong side in the first leg in Lisbon, but was more cautious ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace, resting Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard, Ben White and Thomas Party.

Bewildered Ramsdale&nbsp;

Arteta's one concession to Arsenal's attempt to reach the last eight was including Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus for his first start since undergoing knee surgery following his injury at the World Cup last year.

Jesus, who came off the bench against Fulham on Sunday for his first appearance since the injury, nearly marked his return with a goal as he stretched to reach Reiss Nelson's cross, forcing Adan to save at full stretch.

Arsenal moved ahead in the 19th minute when Gabriel Martinelli got behind the Sporting defence for a shot that was parried out by Adan, with Xhaka lashing in the rebound from 12 yards.

The sight of Saliba limping off moments later dampened the celebrations of Xhaka's fifth goal this season.

Arteta had seen enough of Arsenal's injury problems and took off Jesus at the interval to preserve his star striker.

But Sporting mounted a strong showing in the second half and their pressure was rewarded in stunning style in the 62nd minute.

When Jorginho lost possession in the centre circle, Goncalves seized his chance, looking up to see Ramsdale off his line before unfurling an incredible lofted strike from just inside the Gunners half that arrowed over the Arsenal keeper and dipped in under the bar.

Ramsdale sat bewildered in the back of his own net and shell-shocked Arsenal almost conceded again when Paulinho headed just over.

Sporting's Marcus Edwards and Arsenal substitute Trossard both spurned glorious chances to win it before Lisbon's Manuel Ugarte was sent off for a second bookable offence when he clattered into Bukayo Saka in the 118th minute.&nbsp;

<h3>United with one foot in QF?</h3>

Erik ten Hag’s men will look to consolidate their 4-1 lead from the first leg as they take on a Betis side flying high in the Spanish La Liga. Even a defeat by a two-goal margin will see the Red Devils through with cup ambitions still a primary target for the team. United will be in FA Cup action over the weekend and will look to make a strong finish to the season.

Casemiro sent off in the under-whelming goalless draw against Southampton at Old Trafford will participate in the match despite the domestic ban. The Reds got the better of Barcelona in the last round and will look to make the last eight yet again. United will look to reach their third Europa League final in six years but will still have a handy contest in hand on Thursday.

<h3>Arsenal need to win</h3>

Sitting at top of the pile in the Premier League has seen the Gunners full of confidence as they too will be in search of European glory. Mikel Arteta’s drew 2-2 in the first leg in Portugal but need a win to make the last eight on Thursday. While Europa League is the priority for the North London side, they are still expected to mount a serious challenge. Arsenal have reached the semifinals of the competition on three occasions in five seasons and will look to repeat the performance yet again.

Arsenal need to win Sitting at top of the pile in the Premier League has seen the Gunners full of confidence as they too will be in search of European glory. Mikel Arteta’s drew 2-2 in the first leg in Portugal but need a win to make the last eight on Thursday. Europa League: Manchester United, Arsenal eye QF berth; Sevilla, Roma also in running for last 8 place

Manchester United bounced back from a historic thrashing by Liverpool to beat Real Betis 4-1 in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie, while a 2-2 draw away to Sporting Lisbon gave Arsenal work to do to reach the quarter-finals.

United equalled their heaviest ever defeat and worst since 1931 in losing 7-0 at Anfield on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag responded by naming the same starting line-up and was rewarded with a return to form.

Marcus Rashford smashed United into an early lead with his 26th goal of the season, but Betis levelled against the run of play when Ayoze Perez fired into the far corner.

The visitors could even have gone in front before half-time when Perez's deflected cross came back off the post.

But it was two of United's most fiercely criticised stars in recent days who made the difference after the break.

Antony curled a brilliant shot into the top corner before Bruno Fernandes, who Ten Hag named again as captain, headed in Luke Shaw's corner.

Wout Weghorst then netted just his second goal in 15 appearances for United by pouncing from close range six minutes from time.

Premier League leaders Arsenal were forced to come from behind to salvage a draw in the Portuguese capital.

Despite going for a first league title in 19 years, Mikel Arteta named a strong side and William Saliba headed the visitors into the lead.

Sporting equalised shortly after in near identical fashion, with Goncalo Inacio heading home Marcus Edwards' corner.

Former Tottenham midfielder Edwards then had a role in Sporting's second as Paulinho reacted quickest to finish inside the area.

Arsenal were level just after the hour mark, though, when Granit Xhaka's cross deflected off the unfortunate Hidemasa Morita and rebounded into his own net.

"Considering you concede two goals away from home and still escape with a draw you have to take some positives," said Arsenal boss Arteta.

"But we gave them too much hope by giving the ball away in our own half too many times,” he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

UEFA to probe fan's attack on Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic

Brazilian forward Antony stepped off the bench to send Manchester United through to the Europa League last 16 as the hosts came from behind to beat Barcelona 2-1 in Thursday's playoff second leg and progress 4-3 on aggregate. After a frantic start, Barca were awarded an 18th-minute penalty when Bruno Fernandes was adjudged to have fouled defender Alejandro Balde and Robert Lewandowski just squeezed the spot-kick home.

Manchester United came out for the second half looking like a different side and levelled through Fred, the Brazilian steering home Fernandes's pass two minutes after the break.

A superb save from goalkeeper David de Gea kept out an effort from Barca's Jules Kounde, a stop that proved crucial as Antony arrowed a superb finish into the bottom corner 17 minutes from time to send United through. Manchester United remain in four competitions this season as they bid to win their first major trophy since 2017.

"The belief of the team is always there," Fernandes told BT Sport. "The belief of the fans, they push us through difficult moments. "We have made great comebacks; the club is made also by that. In the past we have done a lot like this result."

Both sides have improved a great deal under their new coaches this season, with some of the football in the first leg testament to that and setting the tie up nicely for the return fixture under the lights at Old Trafford.

FERNANDES DENIED

Manchester United started well with captain Fernandes denied by a superb Marc-Andre ter Stegen save after being picked out by Casemiro. Then came the moment that had Old Trafford united in incredulity as referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot, a decision Fernandes could not believe. De Gea got a hand to Lewandowski's penalty, but could not claw it out.

The Polish striker has now scored 25 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions for the LaLiga leaders this season, the 12th successive campaign in which he has netted 25 or more goals at club level.

United did not create a chance of note for the remainder of the first half but whatever coach Erik ten Hag said at the break had an immediate effect as Fernandes found Fred to level. The save from De Gea to tip Kounde's header over was world class and the finish from Antony also right out of the top drawer.

Substitutes have made a huge difference for United this term, with 19 goals scored by replacements in all competitions, the most of any big-five European league side in 2022-23.

The hosts survived nervy late moments, but saw out a first win over Barca since 2008 -- 1-0 in the second leg of the 2007-08 Champions League semi-final -- to end a five-game winless run against the Spanish side.

"United were very intense in that second half," Barca coach Xavi Hernandez said. "They are in very good form at the moment and are very good at home. It is those fine details that made all the difference.

"If Pedri or Gavi had been there today, maybe it would have been different in the second half."

"The belief of the fans, they push us through difficult moments. "We have made great comebacks; the club is made also by that. In the past we have done a lot like this result." Both sides have improved a great deal under their new coaches this season, with some of the football in the first leg testament to that and setting the tie up nicely for the return fixture under the lights at Old Trafford. FERNANDES DENIED Manchester United started well with captain Fernandes denied by a superb Marc-Andre ter Stegen save after being picked out by Casemiro.

Doors will always be open at the club for the former Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, current manager Xavi Hernandez said ahead of the side’s second-leg round-of-16 match against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Europa League. Speaking highly of Messi, who is also regarded as the greatest ever to grace the game by many, Xavi said he is in permanent contact with the Argentinean, and that Camp Nou was and will always remain Messi’s home. Remaining tight-lipped on if he had spoken with Messi about a potential return to his former club, Xavi said it is for Messi to decide his future but at the same time hasn’t ruled out this becoming a reality.

"This is his home and the doors are open to him. There is no doubt about it. He is a friend, we are in permanent contact. It will depend a lot on him, on what he wants to do in his future, on what the club wants to do as well," Xavi said about&nbsp;Lionel Messi.

Meanwhile, Messi left FC Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, after spending good 21&nbsp;years at the club where he achieved unparalleled success in addition to winning seven Ballon d’Or titles – considered to be the greatest individual prize in football.

When asked if the recently-crowned World Cup winner be able to fit in the current squad, Xavi said a player of Messi’s stature could fit in any squad.

"He is the best in the world and in history; he would always fit in," Xavi added.

Plying his trade in France at the moment, Messi’s PSG is currently leading the points table in Ligue 1 while they trail 0-1 against Bayern Munich in their round-of-16 clash in the Champions League with the second leg scheduled to take place at Allianz Arena on Thursday, March 9th.

Xavi’s Barcelona ready to take down United in away fixture

Having played a 2-2 draw at home in the first leg, Barcelona will take on the spirited Manchester United in an away clash on Wednesday at Old Trafford. United, who are cruising ahead with some stunning spells on the football pitch lately, will be a tougher challenge for the traveling Barcelona said, Xavi reckons. Hailing Manchester United’s current side as one of the best in Europe at the moment, Xavi opined for Barcelona to beat them at their home, they need to show both mentality and character.

"It's a very difficult game. Manchester United is one of the best teams in Europe. On many levels they are the best United have been in recent years. At Camp Nou, they showed a lot of personality, a lot of character, a lot of pace. We need the mentality to win a big game in Europe," said Xavi. "It's a perfect occasion to show that Barcelona can compete against one of the big teams in Europe. It's a very good opportunity. It's a test; every game for Barcelona is a test, this one with more emphasis.”

Barcelona and&nbsp;Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie on Thursday, while Juventus were left frustrated by Nantes in a 1-1 stalemate. The game at the Camp Nou brought together two European giants who met in two Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011, and who are both in excellent form domestically. After a goalless first half, La Liga leaders Barcelona went ahead five minutes into the second half thanks to a Marcos Alonso header at a corner.

However,&nbsp;United&nbsp;drew level just three minutes later when Marcus Rashford beat Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen at his near post to score a 13th goal in 15 games since the World Cup. The Premier League side then took the lead just before the hour mark through a Jules Kounde own goal, but a Raphinha cross flew in inside the final quarter of an hour to secure a draw for Barca before a crowd of more than 90,000.

"I think it was a great game. Two attacking teams, I think it was a Champions League game, even more than that,"&nbsp;United&nbsp;boss Erik ten Hag told broadcaster BT Sport. "We have to finish it in Old Trafford." Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez was left complaining that his side should have had a penalty for a handball by Fred. "It's a stolen penalty," said Xavi. "I don't know why they don't whistle for penalties for handball now. It seems incredible to me. Incredible."

Winning the Europa League may represent the best chance for Juventus to return to the Champions League next season after they were handed a 15-point deduction in Serie A. That punishment, for what the Italian Football Federation ruled was illicit transfer activity designed to artificially boost their accounts, has left the Turin giants 12 points adrift of the top four at home.

Against Nantes they looked on course for a comfortable win when Federico Chiesa nodded a ball across the face of goal for Dusan Vlahovic to open the scoring early on. But French Cup holders Nantes equalised on the breakaway on the hour when Ludovic Blas ran through to finish emphatically. A Chiesa shot then hit the underside of the bar and bounced down without quite all of the ball crossing the line, before it struck the post and rebounded away.

Nantes also survived a VAR penalty check for a handball deep in injury time, the referee instead giving them a free-kick and leaving Juventus with work to do in the return.

Elsewhere, Monaco came from behind to&nbsp;triumph 3-2 away against Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen, with Axel Disasi scoring the winner in the 92nd minute. An own goal by Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky had put Monaco ahead early on only for second-half goals by Moussa Diaby and Florian Wirtz to turn the game around. However, Krepin Diatta pulled the principality team back level before France defender Disasi's strike.

Shakhtar Donetsk were 2-1 winners against Rennes as the Ukrainian club played their first European game since selling star winger Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea. Playing in the Polish capital Warsaw, Dmytro Kryskiv put Shakhtar ahead and Artem Bondarenko netted a penalty before Karl Toko-Ekambi pulled one back for Rennes.

Jose Mourinho's Roma went down 1-0 away to Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg with Argentine midfielder Nicolas Capaldo scoring a late winner. Sevilla, the competition's most successful club, beat PSV Eindhoven 3-0 in Spain as Youssef En-Nesyri, Lucas Ocampos and Nemanja Gudelj all netted.

Ajax drew 0-0 with Union Berlin, while Sebastian Coates scored deep into stoppage time to earn Sporting a 1-1 draw with Midtjylland of Denmark in Lisbon. The second legs will be played next Thursday with places in the last 16 up for grabs alongside the eight teams who topped their groups. Fiorentina were the biggest winners in the first legs of the Europa Conference League play-offs as they trounced Braga 4-0 in Portugal.

Barcelona and Manchester United play out a thrilling draw as Juventus held in Europa League

Manchester United squared off with Barcelona in the UEFA Europa League clash, which ended in a thrilling 2-2 scoreline. Marcos Alonso scored the first goal, for Barcelona, but Man United levelled it pretty soon with in-form Marcus Rashford scoring in the 52nd minute. Jules Kounde provided a 2-1 lead for the Red Devils before Raphinha scored for the Spanish club and the match ended in a 2-2 stalemate.&nbsp;

After the game, Rashford opined on the high-voltage clash, held at the&nbsp;Camp Nou stadium, and feels that his side controlled proceedings in the first half but had some good opportunities which could have&nbsp;put them&nbsp;ahead.&nbsp;

“We started the game really well. There was good control and possession. We had moments in the first half but not really as many clear cut chances, just good moments that could have been great opportunities I think,” said Rashford.

He added, "From the first couple of minutes putting the ball across the face of the goal is a massive chance. It ends up not really a chance because no one was there, but in reality, it's a massive opportunity for us and we just have to gamble more and try and get in front of the goalkeeper, in front of the six-yard box for tap-ins."

The 25-year-old Rashford added that Man United need to capitalise on big moments as they make all the difference in such marquee encounters. He went on to add&nbsp;that the club&nbsp;can build on this performance&nbsp;in&nbsp;the second leg at Old Trafford.

“So yeah, in big games it's big moments that make the difference. I feel like, especially in the second half we took them but in the first half, we probably could have done more. But again, as I said, they're a top team and I think we got what we expected today in terms of their playing style and what they're good at. It's a good performance from us and one to build on and improve on.

“We have to move on now and 2-2 is a result we can take back. We can definitely take that performance, we have a league game in between, but for the next game we want to bring all that we can,” Rashford concluded.

The second leg between both sides will take place on February 24 at Old Trafford and Man United will be eager to get past Barcelona in front of a jam-packed home crowd.

Europa League: Marcus Rashford reacts after Manchester United's thrilling draw vs Barcelona

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gave an earful to the referees after his side was not granted a penalty during the Europa League match against Barcelona on Thursday night.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gave an earful to the referees after his side was not granted a penalty during the Europa League match against Barcelona on Thursday night. In a post-match interview, ten Hag let it rip and said Barca defender Jules Kounde should have been sent off for his foul on Marcus Rashford. "If I may make a point that has a big influence not only on this game but on this round, at 2-1, it was a clear foul on Marcus Rashford. We can discuss if it's inside the box or outside the box, but definitely it's a red card. Yes, I asked the referee why. So he said it was outside the box, and it was no foul," said a visibly angry Ten Hag. The Dutch manager took a shot at Barcelona for their pressure antics on the referee. "And the linesman and referee were in a very good position to see and I think we had VAR. I think it's not good, it was a really bad decision. I can't understand. Maybe they were impressed by the pressure Barca made but they can't be [like that at] the highest European level." Ten Hag was furious about the decision from on-field referee Maurizio Mariani and VAR to let Kounde continue after he blatantly fouled Rashford outside the penalty box when the Red Devil player had a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Though the first half remained goalless, both sides created plenty of chances before exploding on the other side of the whistle. Home side Barcelona drew the first blood when they took the lead through Marcos Alonso's header, jut five minutes into the second half. Europa League complete draw: Manchester United to take on FC Barcelona in playoffs for a spot in last 16

Kieran Tierney’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 home victory for&nbsp;Arsenal&nbsp;over FC Zurich and top spot in Europa League Group A on Thursday, but Manchester United could only finish runners-up in their pool and will go into February’s playoffs. Arsenal top Europa League group after 1-0 win over FC Zurich , Man United face playoffs

Cristiano&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;scored on his first Manchester United appearance since his refusal to come on as a substitute last week in a 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday. The victory, with goals from Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford adding to&nbsp;Ronaldo's strike, guaranteed the Red Devils a place in the next round, where they will join Barcelona who were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage 24 hours earlier.

United manager Erik ten Hag left Portugal forward out of the United squad for Saturday's draw at Chelsea and he was only allowed to return to first-team training this week. "Seeing&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;get his goal was great," Dutchman ten Hag told BT Sport. "He created, the team created for him and we know he has the capability to finish.&nbsp; "He needed a goal and now I'm confident there will be more goals," he added.

Ronaldo, 37, started up front with 18-year-old Argentinian winger Alejandro Garnacho, who was making his maiden senior start. Right-back Dalot opened the scoring just before the break before Rashford doubled the lead with 25 minutes to play.

Ronaldo&nbsp;claimed his 701st club career goal and made sure of the three points with nine minutes left. Arsenal, who have already reached the last 16, lost for the first time in the group stage as they went down to a 2-0 defeat at PSV Eindhoven. Gunners coach Mikel Arteta said afterwards that defender Pablo Mari, on loan at Italian club Monza, was having medical treatment after being stabbed in a Milan shopping centre in an attack which killed one person and injured three others.

Cristiano Ronaldo scores on Man United return as Europa League progress certain

It was a disappointing night for Barcelona as the Spanish giants crashed out of the UEFA Champions League after losing to Bayern Munich on Thursday. The elimination was confirmed when Inter Milan defeated Viktoria Plzen and it got worse as they were defeated 3-0 by the German champions.

The social media was abuzz following Barcelona’s elimination from the tournament after an expensive summer transfer window where they added a number of big-money signings to their ranks. Reigning world chess champion Magnus Carlsen also took a dig at the club on Twitter.

“Good thing the Inter game is not close, so I can focus on chess and Barcelona on the Europa League,” Carlsen tweeted following Inter Milan’s victory in their group stage encounter.

Thanks to the defeat, Barcelona are expected to finish third in the group stage and they will be demoted to the Europa League as a result. Manager Xavi Hernandez expressed his disappointment after the defeat and said that the team was “not at their level” against Bayern Munich.

“In Munich it was us, but today they have been better, more intense. The elimination affected us psychologically. Tomorrow, we train and think about LaLiga. There were high expectations, we had a difficult group. Everything possible happened to us. It has been very cruel. We didn’t compete well today,” he told Marca in the post-match interview.

Marcus Rashford rescues Man Utd, Arsenal ease past Bodo/Glimt in Europa League

Cristiano&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;scored for the first time this season as Manchester United got their Europa League campaign back on track with a 2-0 win at Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday. Ronaldo&nbsp;had gone seven games without a goal before the United striker converted a first half penalty against the Moldovan champions. It was the 37-year-old's 699th club goal, but&nbsp;Ronaldo's low-key celebration was in keeping with the comfortable nature of United's third successive away victory. This was the kind of unglamourous fixture&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;seemed desperate to avoid when he launched his unsuccessful bid to quit Old Trafford for a Champions League club in the summer.

But the Portugal star will be relieved to have got on the scoresheet, after Jadon Sancho put United ahead with a well-timed response on the day he was left out of the England squad.&nbsp;Ronaldo&nbsp;missed United's pre-season tour for "family reasons" and, while Ten Hag was pleased with his contribution against Sheriff, he says the forward needs more work to reach peak fitness.

"We could expect this when you miss pre-season so he has to work really hard and invest to get the right fitness, then he will score more goals," United boss Erik ten Hag said. "You can see he is really close and when he gets fitter he will finish them. I think he is totally committed to this project and to this team. He needed that goal. He was close many times. You see connections coming around him. We're happy for him and the team wanted him to bring the goal, so that's good."

United lost their opening Group E match 1-0 against Real Sociedad last Thursday. That gave Ten Hag's men no margin for error in Chisinau and they were up to the task against a Sheriff side who beat Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage last season.

United's first trip to the far-flung outpost of Moldova served as a painful reminder of their diminished status following last season's failure to qualify for the Champions League. But, showing respect for Sheriff, Ten Hag named a strong side and Sancho, one of five changes, struck with United's first meaningful attack in the 17th minute.

<h4>- Sancho strikes -</h4>

Taking Christian Eriksen's pass in his stride, Sancho cleverly switched direction inside the Sheriff area, giving himself room to plant a cool finish into the bottom corner from 12 yards. Ronaldo&nbsp;doubled United's lead in the 39th minute, easily stroking in his spot-kick after Diogo Dalot was brought down by Patrick Kpozo. United remain three points behind group leaders Real Sociedad, who won 2-1 against Omonia Nicosia.

Sociedad took the lead through Ander Guevara in the 30th minute and former Crystal Palace striker Alexander Sorloth bagged the 80th minute winner after Bruno equalised eight minutes earlier. Andrea Belotti scored his first Roma goal to cap their 3-0 win against 10-man HJK Helsinki at the Stadio Olimpico.

Jose Mourinho's side suffered a shock 2-1 loss against Ludogorets in their Group C opener, but they were always in control after HJK captain Miro Tenho was sent off in the 15th minute for a professional foul on Belotti. Paulo Dybala took just 69 seconds to break the deadlock after coming on at half-time as he fired home from the edge of the area.

Lorenzo Pellegrini chested in the second goal after 49 minutes, with former Torino forward Belotti tapping home in the 68th minute. In Group A, Bodo/Glimt beat FC Zurich 2-1 to take top spot with Arsenal's game against PSV Eindhoven postponed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Ronaldo scores maiden Europa League goal as Manchester United beat Sheriff Tiraspol 2-0

Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;led English football's tributes to Queen Elizabeth&nbsp;II before their 1-0 defeat against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, while Roma boss Jose Mourinho was in mourning after the monarch's death on Thursday.

United, West Ham and Arsenal players -- the Premier League teams in action in Europe's second and third tier tournaments -- all wore black armbands after the Queen died aged 96 earlier in the day. There were sombre atmospheres at Old Trafford and the London Stadium, with&nbsp;United&nbsp;and West Ham both holding a minute's silence prior to kick-off. West Ham fans sang 'God save the Queen' during their 3-1 win against Romanian side FCSB in the Europa Conference League.

The death of the nation's longest-reigning monarch was announced after Arsenal had already kicked off at FC Zurich, so the Gunners had a minute's silence before the start of the second half of their 2-1 Europa League win.

Former&nbsp;United, Chelsea and Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho paid a sombre tribute to the Queen after Roma's 2-1 Europa League loss at Bulgarian side Ludogorets. "I'm so sorry. I have lived in England for many years, my family is there," Mourinho told Sky Sport Italy. "I don't think there's anyone who doesn't appreciate this great woman, I'm sorry."

During an immaculately observed minute's silence in&nbsp;Manchester,&nbsp;United's players linked arms while Sociedad did the same on the other side of the centre-circle. Several&nbsp;United&nbsp;fans were seen crying in the stands, while Sociedad's fans held their blue and white scarves aloft in tribute during the minute's silence. There had been no pre-match music and the digital advertising hoardings were switched off, while flags at Old Trafford were at half-mast as a sign of the club's "utmost respect" for the Queen.

"Manchester&nbsp;United&nbsp;shares the sorrow of the entire nation following the announcement from Buckingham Palace on the passing of Her Majesty, the Queen," a club statement said. "The club recognises her immense contribution to public life, including sport, both here in the&nbsp;United&nbsp;Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world."

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin added: "UEFA and European football are truly saddened by the passing away of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, one of the world's most-respected figures.

"Our thoughts are with her family and the President of the English Football Association Prince William, as well as with the citizens of the&nbsp;United&nbsp;Kingdom and Commonwealth realms."

The usual chants in support of&nbsp;United&nbsp;and against the club's owners the Glazer family were heard once the game started, but the atmosphere felt more subdued than usual. Erik Ten Hag described Brazil forward Antony as&nbsp;United's "missing link" after the Brazil forward scored on his debut against Arsenal on Sunday following his £82 million move from Ajax.

But the 22-year-old struggled to make any impact during a disjointed&nbsp;United&nbsp;performance. Cristiano Ronaldo was making only his second&nbsp;United&nbsp;start this season, while Brazil midfielder Casemiro was given his first start since arriving from Real Madrid. Neither player could spark&nbsp;United, who saw a 35th minute header from Ronaldo correctly disallowed for offside.

Sociedad clinched their victory in the 59th minute when&nbsp;United&nbsp;defender Lisandro Martinez was controversially penalised for handball. The ball only hit Martinez's arm after bouncing off his knee but following a VAR check the decision was confirmed and Brais Mendez stroked the spot-kick past David De Gea. After winning four successive Premier League games,&nbsp;United&nbsp;were beaten for the third time in boss ten Hag's reign.

Brazilian teenager Marquinhos scored on his Arsenal debut as the Premier League leaders recovered from their first defeat of the season at&nbsp;United&nbsp;last weekend. Marquinhos, signed from Sao Paulo in June, finished first-time from a low Eddie Nketiah cross in the 16th minute to put Arsenal ahead. Zurich equalised just before half-time when Mirlind Kryeziu converted a penalty after a foul in the box by Nketiah.

Nketiah made amends by scoring the winning goal just after the hour mark, heading in from Marquinhos's cross. Elsewhere in the Europa League, PSV Eindhoven and Bodo/Glimt drew 1-1, with Cody Gakpo after Albert Gronbaek had given the Norwegian champions the lead. Lazio beat Feyenoord 4-2 thanks to Matias Vecino's double.

Manchester United led English football's tributes to Queen Elizabeth II before their 1-0 defeat against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, while Roma boss Jose Mourinho was in mourning after the monarch's death on Thursday. United, West Ham and Arsenal players -- the Premier League teams in action in Europe's second and third tier tournaments -- all wore black armbands after the Queen died aged 96 earlier in the day. There were sombre atmospheres at Old Trafford and the London Stadium, with United and West Ham both holding a minute's silence prior to kick-off. Uzbek forward Eldor Shomurodov looked to have secured a draw for Roma when he equalised with four minutes to go, cancelling out Brazilian midfielder Cauly's opener.

But the Bulgarian champions grabbed all three points in the 88th minute through Nonato, another member of their sizeable Brazilian contingent.

Europa League draw: Arsenal and Manchester United rejoice as they seemingly bag relatively easy clashes

West Ham lost 1-0 to&nbsp;Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday as the latter stunned one and all and reached their maiden final, where they are set to face the Rangers for the mega title.

Eintracht Frankfurt beat 10-man West Ham United 1-0 in their Europa League semi-final second leg on Thursday to reach their first European final in 42 years with a 3-1 aggregate victory. The Germans, who last featured in a European final in 1980, will face Rangers on May 18 after the Scottish side knocked out RB Leipzig.

In front of a deafening 48,000 crowd, Rafael Borre drilled in the winner for the hosts in the 26th minute, beating the English club for a second time following a 2-1 triumph in the first leg last week. West Ham, who played most of the game with 10 men after left back Aaron Cresswell was dismissed for a professional foul on Jens Petter Hauge in the 17th minute, were toothless throughout.

Their manager David Moyes was also sent off in the 79th minute for angrily kicking a ball in a frustrating and scrappy end to West Ham`s European run this season. "A dream has finally come true," Eintracht president Peter Fischer said, surrounded by ecstatic fans who stormed the pitch on the final whistle.
"The team did it really well. This city and this environment deserved it. That`s football and now we will win this thing," Fischer said.

It had not started well for Frankfurt, though, with defender Martin Hinteregger taken off after only eight minutes with a hamstring injury. But the dismissal of Creswell opened up space down the wing for the Germans and Ansgar Knauff made the most of it when he charged through and delivered a perfect ball for Borre to score.

West Ham hardly got a look in and their best chance came a minute from halftime when Kurt Zouma`s close-range effort was cleared off the line. They were equally ineffectual after the break with Moyes`s frustration boiling over when he kicked the ball at a ball boy who he thought was trying to waste time.
"Really disappointed," Moyes said. "Things didn`t go for us tonight. I am really proud of the players – how they played with 10 men was fantastic. Other teams would have folded and lost 2-0 or 3-0.

Eintracht Frankfurt move past 10-man West Ham to enter maiden Europa League final, to face Rangers

Underdogs Eintracht Frankfurt scored a major upset when they stunned hosts Barcelona 3-2 on Thursday thanks to two goals from winger Filip Kostic to march into the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Serbia international Kostic converted a fourth minute penalty and added another in the 67th with a low drive after Rafael Borre thundered in their second goal in the 36th for a 4-3 aggregate victory and a sensational win at the Camp Nou.

The Catalans, pre-match favourites after a first leg 1-1 draw in Germany last week, missed a couple of chances with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but were far less threatening than their opponents who could have added to their tally.

They did score twice in stoppage time through a Sergio Busquets shot and Memphis Depay`s penalty after Frankfurt`s Evan N`Dicka was sent off but ran out of time to score a third goal that would have forced extra time.

"I am speechless," said Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp. "Nobody expected this, to be honest. Everyone expected us to suffer here.

"We needed to take our chances and today we were very efficient. We are in the last four and we want to get as far as possible. We showed we don`t have to hide from anybody, but no doubt, now we want to make the final."

Eintracht, who last reached the semi-final stage in 2019 and are unbeaten away from home this season in the Europa League, will now face West Ham, 4-1 aggregate winners over Lyon.

Oliver Glasner`s team, currently in ninth place in the Bundesliga, got off to a perfect start when Eric Garcia brought down Jesper Lindstrom four minutes into the game and Kostic coolly sent Marc-Andre ter Stegen the wrong way from the spot.

Despite Barcelona taking control, it was the visitors who were more effective and scored again with Borre`s 25-metre missile that left Ter Stegen beaten.

Aubameyang should have done better three minutes after the restart when he failed to connect with an Ousmane Dembele cutback in front of goal.

Ter Stegen then temporarily kept them in the game when he stopped a shot from Lindstrom in the 58th but could do nothing when unmarked Kostic found himself with far too much space on the left and drilled in a shot past the keeper.

"What we did was insufficient today despite the heroic attempt in the end," said Barca coach Xavi. "It is very disappointing... we did not play well. We had control and possession, but found no spaces to hurt them."

Barca's two stoppage time goals came far too late for a team that had almost 70 percent possession but fewer (10) attempts on goal to their opponents (16).

"I am speechless," said Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp. "Nobody expected this, to be honest. Everyone expected us to suffer here. "We needed to take our chances and today we were very efficient. We are in the last four and we want to get as far as possible. We showed we don`t have to hide from anybody, but no doubt, now we want to make the final." Eintracht, who last reached the semi-final stage in 2019 and are unbeaten away from home this season in the Europa League, will now face West Ham, 4-1 aggregate winners over Lyon.
