On Wednesday, Kuwait executed seven people convicted of murder and other crimes for the first time since 2017 amid widespread criticism from the international community over its plans to do so. The European Commission summoned the country’s envoy to the EU in Brussels and the issue would reportedly be raised.

The seven inmates convicted of premeditated murder and other charges were four Kuwaitis (three men and one woman), a Syrian man, a Pakistani man and an Ethiopian woman. They were executed at the Gulf Arab state's Central Prison, said the state-run KUNA news agency. However, they have not specified the method used to carry out the executions.

“They deprived the victims of their most sacred rights in this world, which is the right to life,” said Kuwait’s public prosecution in a statement. The country hasn’t carried out a mass execution since it had sentenced seven prisoners, including a ruling family member, five years ago.

Amnesty International’s deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, Amna Guellali, called for the authorities to “immediately halt these executions”. She added, “death penalty is a violation of the right to life and the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment”.

The European Union also immediately criticised the executions which coincided with the European Commission official Margaritis Schinas’ visit to Kuwait. In a statement, the EU called for a “halt to executions and for a complete de facto moratorium on carrying out death penalty, as a first step towards a formal and full abolition of the death penalty in Kuwait”.

At the UN climate negotiations on Tuesday, rich polluters were chastised by developing nations for failing to do enough to assist them in coping with global warming. The EU, however, promised to accelerate its emission reductions.

Calls for wealthier nations to fulfil commitments to finance the green transitions of poorer countries that are least responsible for global emissions, support their development of resilience, and compensate them for losses related to climate change have dominated the COP27 meeting in Egypt.

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, the COP27 president, said technical roadblocks were impeding progress toward higher-level political conversations on a variety of subjects during a meeting to wrap off Tuesday's negotiations.

Addressing the delegates, he said, "Progress has been made, but there is unquestionably more to be done if we are to reach the robust objectives that will drive ambitious, inclusive climate action."

The gathering takes place at a time when CO2 emissions are projected to reach a record high globally this year, making the aspirational target of keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius from preindustrial levels much more improbable.

According to Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, the European Union will surpass its initial goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.

According to him, the 27-nation bloc would now be able to reduce those emissions by 57% from 1990 levels. He cited agreements on the phase-out of fossil fuel-powered cars and the preservation of forests that serve as "carbon sinks".

EU vows to speed emissions reductions pressed by climate-vulnerable nations

Defence ministers of European Union countries on Tuesday (November 15) cleared the way for the UK to join an EU project which looks to facilitate swift military movement across Europe. Britain has left the EU in 2020 after a 2016 Brexit referendum. The country has been skeptical of European military integration as it fears this may undermine North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

But non-European NATO allies the United States and Canada have also signed up to the EU's "Military Mobility" project, part of its enhanced defence cooperation (PESCO). It aims to simplify and standardise procedures for military personnel and equipment as they cross borders by road, rail, sea or air.

For many years, military experts have been complaining that red tape was hampering swift movement of troops and equipment across the continent.

"Russia's war against Ukraine has further demonstrated that being able to move troops and military equipment swiftly across Europe and beyond is essential for our security," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement.

"After the U.S., Canada and Norway joined last year, the UK's participation is yet another proof of the importance of this project," he said.

"Ensuring fast movement and secure transport of armed forces is crucial to improve the EU and NATO's ability to respond to crises, in particular now as we provide urgent military support to Ukraine."

Climate change is wreaking havoc globally as witnessed in extreme weather events such as floods and wildfires. Now, a latest research revealed the combined methane emissions of five of the largest meat corporations and ten of the largest dairy corporations are roughly 12.8 million tonnes, which equates to over 80 per cent of the European Union’s entire methane footprint.

An analysis done by Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) under report name "Emissions Impossible: Methane Edition" made these estimations and called for "urgent and ambitious" legislation to address the devastating climate impacts of the global meat and dairy corporations.

“That just blew my mind,” said Shefali Sharma, director of the IATP’s European office. “We can’t continue to have this handful of companies controlling this many animals.”

The report comes as the world leaders are gathered in Egypt attending the COP27 climate conference and reiterating their committments to mitigate the climate change. Methane emissions from 15 meat and dairy companies equate to over 80 pc that of EU's: Report

European Council President Charles Michel said that the European Union expected China to push Moscow to respect international law. He said that China should use "all means at its disposal" for this. Michel's statement came just days before G20 summit takes place. It is expected that the issue of Ukraine war will dominate the summit.

Michel was speaking on the sidelines of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit taking place in Cambodia. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has urged Southeast Asian nations to support Kyiv.

While China remains a major trading partner of the European Union, officials have repeatedly called on Beijing to publicly condemn Russia's actions -- without success so far.

China has avoided criticising Moscow for invading Ukraine, instead blaming the United States and NATO for the war.

"We encourage the Chinese authorities to use all the means at their disposal to convince Russia to respect internationally recognised borders, to respect the sovereignty of Ukraine," Michel told AFP.

The European Union announced on Thursday that it would not recognise Russian passports obtained in Ukrainian regions that Moscow has annexed.

Russian travel credentials issued to residents of certain territories cannot be used to get visas or enter the Schengen area as a result of the decision, which also applies to two Georgian regions under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation.

"This decision is a response to Russia's unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine and Russia's practice of issuing Russian international passports to residents of the occupied regions," the European Council said in a statement.

The European Parliament and EU member states still need to formally approve the move.

EU won't recognise Russian passports from occupied regions in Ukraine

On Tuesday, a new report released by the European parliament painted a grim picture of the European Union democracy by detailing the increasing use of mercenary spyware, Pegasus. In the past 18 months, four EU countries — Hungary, Poland, Spain and Greece have been accused of using spyware or equivalent technology against their citizens.

Reports suggest that the software developed by the Israeli-based company NSO Group, Pegasus, and its less sophisticated version, Predator are some of the most well-known brands in Europe. Once this spyware infiltrates a device it can extract data and allow real-time surveillance, find passwords, track location and even activate its camera or microphone to gather information about its owner.

While the company claims that this software was designed to fight crime and terrorism, investigators have found that it is being used to snoop on journalists, activists, dissents as well as politicians across the world.

ALSO WATCH: Explainer: What is Pegasus spyware? How does it hack into your phone to spy on you?

Speaking at a press conference, Dutch EU lawmaker Sophie in 't Veld presented the draft version of the report and said that in countries like Poland and Hungary the use of such spyware is an “integral element” of a system that is designed to “control and even oppress the citizens” which often include “critics of the government, opposition, journalists, whistleblowers.”

In some cases, the spyware also leads to illegitimate surveillance which is often based on vague justifications while the exemption of national security is repeatedly invoked in order to dodge accountability as well as maintain secrecy. In this context, the report says, the “rule of law turns into law of the ruler.”

The liberal lawmaker who acted as rapporteur said that her team was forced to rely on publicly available resources as the EU governments refused to cooperate, “The spyware scandal is not a series of isolated national cases of abuse, but a full-blown European affair,” said the report.

ALSO READ: Israel to probe allegations of Pegasus spyware use against own citizens

Furthermore, in addition to the four aforementioned countries, the report also puts Cyprus under suspicion for the use of spyware. While Poland and Hungary have witnessed at least over a dozen cases of journalists and political opponents being illegally targeted, Greece has also been caught amid an escalating espionage scandal.

According to a separate report by Politico, at least 33 people in Greece including the phones of journalists, business people and lawmakers of the conservative New Democracy government, their families as well as the politicians of the main opposition Syriza party, had traces of the illegal spyware Predator on their devices.

Meanwhile, in Spain, the spyware was detected on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s phone and the devices of several other national ministers as well as Catalan lawmakers, lawyers and civil society organisations. Earlier this year, a number of Catalan lawmakers had alleged that Spain’s intelligence authorities had used Pegasus software to hack their phones.

The fallout of the Pegasus scandal also resulted in the ouster of Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles, earlier this year. Meanwhile, in Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was forced to issue an apology as well as announced the plans to ban the spyware technology amid mounting pressure.

Similarly, the Dutch EU lawmaker has also called for an immediate suspension of such spyware until proper regulation measures are in place. She also claimed that all 27 EU countries have spyware at their disposal even if they refused to admit it. The report alleges that countries like Cyprus and Bulgaria have acted as export hubs for this spyware.

“Europe has been the hub for exports to dictatorships and oppressive regimes, such as Libya, Egypt and Bangladesh,” said the report. During the conference, 't Veld also acknowledged that these findings were largely based on the work of journalists and investigators and not confirmed by governments.

In this context, the report says, the “rule of law turns into law of the ruler.” The liberal lawmaker who acted as rapporteur said that her team was forced to rely on publicly available resources as the EU governments refused to cooperate, “The spyware scandal is not a series of isolated national cases of abuse, but a full-blown European affair,” said the report. ALSO READ: Israel to probe allegations of Pegasus spyware use against own citizens Furthermore, in addition to the four aforementioned countries, the report also puts Cyprus under suspicion for the use of spyware. ALSO READ: Pegasus spyware strikes again in Mexico despite government's assurances: Report Similarly, the Dutch EU lawmaker has also called for an immediate suspension of such spyware until proper regulation measures are in place. EU industry chief underlines EU-China rivalry

According to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, the European Union and Germany are debating whether to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation.

"I made it clear last week that we will launch another package of sanctions, that we will examine how we can also list the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation," Baerbock said in an interview with ARD broadcaster on Sunday.

Her remarks follow the head of the Revolutionary Guards' warning that Saturday would be the last day for demonstrators to take to the streets, signalling that security forces may step up their already ruthless crackdown on widespread dissent.

Germany said last week that it was imposing additional entry restrictions on Iran in addition to the penalties already imposed by the EU.

Additionally, according to Baerbock, there are no ongoing conversations regarding the nuclear agreement between Iran and the West.

The European Union (EU) on Sunday (October 30) called on Russia to reverse its decision to pull out of Ukraine grain deal. The UN-brokered deal guaranteed safe passage for Ukrainian grain in spite of the war raging in the country. Russia declared on Saturday that it would be suspending its participation in the deal.

"Russia's decision to suspend participation in the Black Sea deal puts at risk the main export route of much needed grain and fertilisers to address the global food crisis caused by its war against Ukraine," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Twitter.

A couple of weeks after Hong Kong refused to sanction a superyacht belonging to Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov, South Africa has toed a similar line. Reportedly, the country will allow billionaire Mordashov to dock his yacht, named 'The Nord' in Cape Town. "South Africa has no legal obligation to abide by sanctions imposed by the US and EU," said Vincent Magwenya, spokesman for President Cyril Ramaphosa. Magwenya added that Mordashov was not under any UN-sponsored sanctions and thus South Africa wasn't required to impose any restrictions on him. "South Africa's obligations with respect to sanctions relate only to those that are specifically adopted by the United Nations." Read more: Weekend Special: Who is a Russian oligarch? Here's what you need to know The decision by the South African government came against the backdrop of opposition party leaders requesting the administration to seize the 465-foot long yacht. After Russian missile and drone attacks destroyed more than 30% of the nation's power plants in a week, Ukraine is implementing energy-saving measures.

The Ukrainian president demanded that Europe arm Kyiv's military with more advanced air defences in response to the assaults and impose greater economic sanctions on Moscow in order to reduce Moscow's capacity to finance its war.

Cleverly spoke about the developments during his speech at the House of Commons when he was questioned about UK’s response following multiple attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

The ‘Kamikaze’ drones have become quite popular in the attack against Ukraine because of the mobility it provides. The drones can be packed with explosives and can even be carried in backpacks by the Russian soldiers before deploying them on enemies from a considerable distance.

The United Nations Security Council also agreed to impose sanctions on the supply of drones after written complaints from United States and other western countries. According to Reuters, the US said that the supply of arms broke the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the six countries.

“We expressed our grave concerns about Russia’s acquisition of these UAVs from Iran. We now have abundant evidence that these UAVs are being used to strike Ukrainian civilians and critical civilian infrastructure,” US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said.

However, the officials in Tehran have completely denied the allegations and said that they have no arms deal with Moscow. However, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said that the army has shot down 37 drones till now.
