Google argued that the Indian antitrust tribunal should overturn a judgement against the US company for exploiting the dominance of its Android operating system in the country's market.

In October, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) fined Alphabet Inc.'s Google US$161 million for abusing its monopolistic position in markets like online search and the Android app store and demanded that it modify the limitations placed on smartphone manufacturers with regard to pre-installing apps.

Google was concerned about the Indian decision, according to sources who spoke to Reuters in October, because the remedies mandated were thought to be more extensive than those outlined in the historic 2018 decision by the European Commission that found that the restrictions placed on manufacturers of Android mobile devices were unlawful. In that instance, a record 4.1 billion euro ($4.3 billion) fine has been contested by Google.

The European Union and Ukraine will discuss financial and military assistance during a summit on February 3, 2023, in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's office informed in a statement on Monday.

Zelensky's first order of business in 2023 was an agenda discussion with the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, the statement read. "The parties discussed expected results of the next Ukraine-EU summit to be held on February 3 in Kyiv and agreed to intensify preparatory work."

As both the leaders exchanged words over a call, they discussed a fresh $19 billion financial aid for Ukraine. However, Zelensky asserted an early transaction of the first chunk of the assistance. Another matter was the supply of 'appropriate' weapons for the war-struck nation.

Sweden will take the rotating EU presidency on January 1 and has pledged to promote free trade and maintain unity on the Ukraine crisis in the face of demands for a more forceful reaction to U.S. green subsidies. The biggest concerns for Stockholm as it assumes leadership of the 27-nation bloc at this turbulent moment might be how new dynamics in its own domestic politics play out in the European arena.

After eight years of centre-left dominance, the conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's cabinet, which was founded in October, is reliant on an unusual coalition with the far-right Sweden Democrats to win a majority in parliament.

Despite rejecting previous calls for Sweden to leave the EU, the populist party's uncompromising position on issues like immigration appears certain to spark domestic conflict and reduce the amount of leeway for manoeuvre.

There have been "plenty of lovely words" from the Swedish government on its plans, according to Helene Fritzon, a member of the opposition Social Democrats in the European Parliament.

Stockholm has underlined climate change and defending EU "basic values" in the face of disagreements with Hungary and Poland as priority, in addition to Russia's aggressiveness and trade.

"But there is great concern when, in practice, it is the Sweden Democrats who have the whip hand," Fritzon said.

Others, though, are less concerned about the possibility that the far-right party may interfere with Stockholm's moment in the limelight on its European tour.

The Sweden Democrats must formally be notified of any decisions made regarding the EU as a result of the agreement reached to form the government.

The European Union’s health agency has termed screening of travellers from China, which is experiencing a resurgent Covid outbreak, as “unjustified”, saying that such measures are not required to be re-introduced in the European countries.

Several countries including the US, Italy, India, and Australia have announced Covid screening measures.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control believed that such measures were unnecessary as the surge was "not expected to impact" the EU.

“High levels of Covid in China are anticipated given the country's low immunity and recent relaxation of its rules,” the ECDC said in a statement on Thursday, after the health officials concluded the talks on response in Brussels.

“But higher immunity in the EU means a Covid surge in China is not expected to impact the bloc.”

The health agency argued that the COVID-19 variants circulating in China are already present in the EU, and the chances of potential imported infections rather "rather low".

EU terms screening travellers from China ‘unjustified’, says ‘not expected to impact’ European nations

The United States oil giant, ExxonMobil Corp, has filed a lawsuit against the European Union in a bid to block the 27-nation bloc’s new windfall tax on oil and gas companies. This comes after the European Commission proposed to levy a windfall tax on the profits of energy producers at the General Court of the EU, in Luxembourg, on Wednesday.

The windfall tax is imposed on a firm which has benefitted from something they were not directly responsible for, in this case, it could be energy firms making profits for their products, partly due to the supply chain issues as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the company has argued that Brussels exceeded its legal authority by imposing the proposed tax and called it “counterproductive”.

The lawsuit also argues that the measure is a tax the right of which is reserved with the national governments and challenges the use of the EU Treaty’s Article 122, an emergency procedure that excludes the European Parliament, to enact the legislation. This also comes after the company as well as the oil sector has made record profits this year, due to high energy prices and soaring inflation across the world, which has renewed calls to impose additional taxes on the sector.

In October, ExxonMobil reported a quarterly profit of at least $20 billion. A month prior, the European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen announced the plan for oil, gas, and coal companies to pay what she called a “crisis contribution” on the increased profits this year. However, Exxon spokesperson Casey Norton, said that the move discourages investments and undermines investor confidence.

He added, “Whether we invest here primarily depends on how attractive and globally competitive Europe will be.” The lawsuit was first reported by Financial Times, on Wednesday, which was filed through the company’s subsidiaries in Germany and the Netherlands. In September, the EU countries passed an emergency package of legislation aimed at tackling soaring energy prices and a minimum 33 per cent tax which it referred to as the “crisis contribution”.

The relevant profits could be from fiscal years 2022 or 2023, depending on the country, said the EU. If passed, the windfall profit tax in question would cost at least $2 billion by the end of next year, said CFO Kathryn Mikells during a call with analysts, earlier this month, reported Reuters. The energy giant has also noted that they have invested $3 billion in the past decade in refinery projects in European countries.

The Kremlin may decide to cut oil production by around seven per cent in the first quarter of 2023 in the aftermath of the oil price cap imposed by the European Union members, a Russian deputy prime minister said on Friday according to AFP. He also said that Russia will stop oil supply to all countries who agreed with the price cap as it was seen as a support for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.

"At the start of next year, we could make a reduction of 500,000-700,000 barrels per day. For us, that's around 5-7 percent," Alexander Novak, who is in charge of Moscow's energy policy, said.

The European Union imposed a $60 per barrel price ceiling on oil exports in order to decrease the revenue earned by Russia and it was also somewhat agreed by G7 countries and Australia. The Russian economy took a hit due to the restrictions and a decrease in production will help the cause.

UK and EU are witnessing alarming health concerns

In what is being touted as the worst-ever bird flu outbreak in Europe this year, there were almost 2,500 outbreaks of the flu that were detected on farms in 37 European countries, between October 2021 and September 2022, declared the European Food Safety Authority, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the EU, according to AFP reports.

Almost 50 million birds were slaughtered on affected farms, said the EFSA and this toll did not include preventive culls of chickens, ducks and turkeys that were carried out alongside the outbreaks, the health agency told AFP. It also said that for the first time, there was no marked separation between two epidemic waves, as the virus was not brought under control in the summer. The number of infected farms was 35 per cent higher this autumn, the epidemic was more virulent than last year at the same time.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said that the risk of infection in humans was low, and in between low to medium for people working in contact with birds and poultry. Between September 2 and December 10, 2022, around 400 outbreaks were recorded on farms in 18 European countries.

The virus has also been detected more than 600 times in wild birds, notably ducks and swans, which the report said may have contributed to the spread of the virus between farms.

The European Union members have finally agreed on a gas price cap, a spokesperson for the Czech Republic posted on Twitter on Monday. The Czech Republic currently holds the presidency for the bloc and after a meeting between the energy ministers of all the major members, it was decided that the cap on gas prices will be active once the benchmark gas prices cross 180 euros ($190) per megawatt hour.

The members have been trying to agree on a gas price gap in order to stop the market reliance on Russian exports. With the EU imposing massive sanctions on Russia, the Kremlin decided to cut off gas supplies to Europe and in the face of an energy crisis, it became important to put a cap on the prices.

Reuters reported that the gas price cap will depend directly on the front-month Dutch Title Transfer Facility gas hub contract – the central price of gas for the European Union countries. It will become official from February 15 in 2023 but will not be applicable to “over-the-counter trades”.

EU parliament recognises Ukraine's soviet-era famine as 'genocide'

The European Union said Friday its latest round of sanctions will hit Russia’s military-industrial complex, as well as people and groups that are attacking Ukrainian civilians or kidnapping children.

Valdis Dombrovskis, a European Commission vice-president, said the package will deal a blow to 168 “entities” — companies or state organizations — as well as some two dozen individuals.

The ninth package of EU punitive measures against Russia for its war in Ukraine was approved by EU leaders at a summit Thursday. It was formally adopted Friday by written procedure.

European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said the package also focuses “on tech, finance and media to push the Russian economy and war machine further off the rails.”

Von der Leyen added that the new sanctions target “almost 200 individuals and entities involved in attacks on civilians and kidnapping children.” Russia’s open effort to adopt Ukrainian children and bring them up as Russian is already well underway, in one of the most explosive issues of the war, an Associated Press investigation has showed.

Full details of the package will be revealed once they are published in the bloc’s legal records.

The targets of the latest recommended sanctions included government ministers, lawmakers, regional governors and political parties. The EU Commission also wanted to hit more Russian banks and to impose export controls and restrictions on products like chemicals, nerve agents, electronics and IT components that could be used by the armed forces.

Von der Leyen also proposed “to ban the direct exports of drone engines to Russia and the export to any third countries, such as Iran, which could supply drones to Russia.”

In addition, the European Commission recommended that EU members take action against Russia’s energy and mining sectors, including with a ban on new mining investments, and that they move to take more Russian TV stations off the air in Europe.

As well as sanctions on various entities, banks and individuals, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and members of his family, the EU has previously approved an embargo on coal and seaborne oil imports, in close concert with Western allies.

The European Union (EU) on Thursday (December 15) granted Bosnia candidate status to join the bloc. This puts the volatile Balkan nation at the start of a long road to membership. Russian invasion of Ukraine has given fresh impetus to EU's efforts to consider letting in more nations.

Bosnia now becomes the third country after conflict-ravaged Ukraine and Moldova to be granted candidate status in the past six months.

There are concerns within the EU that if new members are not inducted, it leaves doors open for Russia and China to spread their influence in the east European countries.

Approval for Bosnia to be given a candidate status was given at a summit in Brussels.

The move comes despite long-standing concerns over the political situation in Bosnia, a country of three million people burdened with ethnic divisions since its devastating war three decades ago.

Bosnia remains partitioned between a Serb entity and a Muslim-Croat federation connected by a weak central government.

It has a dysfunctional administrative system created by the 1995 Dayton Agreement that succeeded in ending the conflict in the 1990s but largely failed in providing a framework for the country's political development.

While granting candidate status, the European Commission has laid out 14 priorities for reforms Bosnia needs to deliver on. The next stage after this happens is opening of formal accession negotiations.

Bosnian politicians have insisted it is high time the country be granted candidate status.

But a stand-off has seen Bosnia's Serb entity, the Republika Srpska, block state institutions and cause "virtual paralysis" in the reform process in recent times, the EU has said.

There are also concerns over calls by Serb leaders for closer ties with Russia, and the entity's nationalist president Milorad Dodik has vowed to stall the push towards the EU if it means more centralisation of power in Bosnia.

Bosnia will join seven other nations with candidate status: Turkey, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine.

The process to join the European Union can take many years as candidates implement reforms.

The European Union struck a political deal on Tuesday to impose a carbon dioxide emissions price on imports of polluting commodities like steel and cement, a groundbreaking programme intended to boost European companies as they decarbonise. The decision came about after all-night talks.

Negotiators from EU nations and the European Parliament reached an agreement on the bill imposing CO2 emissions penalties on imports of iron and steel, cement, fertilisers, aluminium, and energy.

Firms bringing in those products to the EU will need to purchase certifications to cover their embedded CO2 emissions. The plan aims to apply the same CO2 price to local EU industry and foreign businesses, the latter of which are currently required to purchase permits from the EU carbon market.

Mohammed Chahim, European Parliament's lead negotiator on the law, said the border tariff would be crucial to EU efforts to fight climate change.

"It is one of the only mechanisms we have to incentivise our trading partners to decarbonise their manufacturing industry," Chahim said.

The tax's purpose is to shield European businesses from being outbid by less expensive products coming from nations with laxer environmental regulations.

It will also apply to imported hydrogen, which was a demand made during the discussions but was not included in the initial EU plan.

This week's discussions on a reform of the EU carbon market will define some of the law's specifics, including when it will go into effect.

In order to protect local industry from foreign competition, the EU now provides free CO2 licences. However, to comply with WTO regulations, the EU aims to phase out these free permits once the carbon border tax is implemented. The discussions around the carbon market will determine how swiftly that phase-in occurs.

Also WATCH | WION Climate Tracker: EU strikes deal on world's first carbon border tariff The tax's purpose is to shield European businesses from being outbid by less expensive products coming from nations with laxer environmental regulations. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Bosnia is now at the start of a laborious path to membership after the European Union decided to award it "candidate status" on Tuesday. The European Union's willingness to consider allowing in more of its eastern neighbours has been stagnant for years, but Russia's assault on Ukraine has given it new energy. The EU is worried that if nations hoping to join the organisation are denied entry, other powers, like Russia or China, may expand their influence into the Balkans.

After the executive branch of the bloc recommended in October that they start the membership process, Bosnia was given the all-clear to become a candidate during a meeting of European affairs ministers in Brussels.

The move is anticipated to receive official approval from EU leaders at a summit on Thursday in Brussels.

The action being taken despite long-standing worries about Bosnia's political climate, a 3 million-person nation beset by ethnic tensions following a horrific war three decades ago.

It is still divided between a federation of Muslim-Croats and a Serb entity that are linked by a feeble central administration.

The EU has claimed that the Republika Srpska, the Serb portion of Bosnia, has blocked state institutions and brought about "virtual standstill" in the reform process.

Concerns have also been raised about Serb leaders' desire for deeper connections with Russia, and Bosnia's nationalist president, Milorad Dodik, has pledged to halt the EU's expansion if it results in a greater concentration of power there.

Bosnia will join the other seven countries—Turkey, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine—that have candidate status.

As applicants execute changes that must be extensively examined by Brussels, the process to join the European Union may take many years.

European Union member states expressed alarm Monday over allegations that Qatar bribed some European Parliament members to influence their decision making. One of the body’s vice presidents has been arrested and charged in connection with the scandal.

Qatar 'corruption scandal' rocks European parliament, Vice President Eva Kaili arrested

A high-profile corruption scandal has recently come to light in Europe which includes the allegations against some Members of the European Parliament (MEP). However, Belgian police are still in the midst of investigating the alleged bribery and corruption case and so far, they have charged four people.

According to media reports, among the four arrested are the European Parliament Vice President Eva Kaili and three others who have been charged with bribery money, laundering and participation in a criminal organisation on behalf of a “Gulf state.”

While the European authorities have not officially named the country, Belgian media reports and even some members of the EU parliament have reportedly identified the “Gulf state” as Qatar. However, Doha has since “categorically rejected” the allegations of their involvement in the case.

What do we know about the case?

Headquartered in Belgium, Brussels, the European Parliament is one of the legislative bodies of the EU which consists of 27 member nations and 705 elected members the representation of which is proportional to the population of the member country. Notably, the MEPs are grouped in terms of political affiliation as opposed to which nation they are from.

On Friday, the Belgian police searched 16 homes and detained four initially unnamed people in connection with the case. Over the weekend raids also took place at the homes of two MEPs and a former MEP’s family in Italy.

According to a report by the New York Times, a total of six people were detained, on Friday, in addition to the EU parliament, VP was Kaili’s husband Francesco Giorgi and her father, Alexandros Kailis. Notably, Kaili’s husband works as an aide to Italian MEP Andrea Cozzolino.

Furthermore, Luca Visentini, head of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and Pier Antonio Panzeri, a former member of the European Parliament were also detained, said the report. However, the identity of the 6th person remains unknown. A report by Politico said that Kaili’s father and the trade union chief have since been released.

Over the weekend, the case unravelled further with at least 20 searches being conducted, said the Belgian federal prosecutor, on Monday. This included 19 private homes and one European parliament office. They have also frozen the IT accounts of several parliamentary staff to preserve data during the investigation, the purpose of this search was to seize the data, said the prosecutors.

“For several months, investigators from the Federal Judicial Police suspect a Gulf country of influencing the European Parliament’s (EP) economic and political decisions,” the prosecutor’s statement said. They also seized 600,000 euros ($ 63,227) in cash as well as computers and cell phones from one of the houses reportedly belonging to an MEP.

Additionally, the police also found several hundred thousand euros from a hotel room in Brussels, said the prosecutors. Furthermore, the police also reportedly found 150,000 euros ($ 158,381) at Kaili’s apartment and her family’s assets in Greece have been frozen by the authorities.

On Tuesday, Kaili's lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, told the Greek local channel, Open TV, that she is "innocent" and "has nothing to do with bribery from Qatar." The lawyer also said that she has "no insight" referring to the money that was allegedly found at the MEP's residence. Meanwhile, Kaili’s father who was also detained has no restrictions placed against him and has since been released.

According to a report by Politico, Dimitrakopoulos also said that Kaili’s father "is free if he wants to come to Greece”. However, she added, “when a father sees his child in such a difficult situation, he stays by (their) side.” The lawyer also plans on filing an appeal tomorrow against the family's frozen assets in Greece, said the report.

Who is MEP Eva Kaili?

The Greek Member of the European Parliament Eva Kaili is also among the 14 vice presidents of the European Parliament was reportedly arrested on Friday and charged with “participation in a criminal organisation, money laundering and corruption.”

She has also been accused of lobbying in favour of a Persian Gulf state which the Belgian media reports have identified as the 2022 FIFA World Cup host, Qatar. Since the EU parliament is divided on political affiliation, Kaili’s group, the parliament’s Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group has faced intense scrutiny following the incident.

A former journalist and graduate of architecture, civil engineering and European affairs, she became a national lawmaker by 2007 in the Greek parliament (Hellenic Parliament) as a member of PASOK, the country’s social-democrat party. She was also the youngest member of the Thessaloniki city council at the age of 24.

Kaili also stood her ground in opposition to Prime Minister George Papandreou, in 2009 when he was facing mounting criticism for his mismanagement of the country’s sovereign debt crisis. However, two years later when Papandreou faced a vote of confidence she eventually changed her vote in favour of the former PM and so did the rest of her party.

In 2014 she ran for the European Parliament and got elected to join their S&D group which is the second-largest formation in the hemicycle. Over the years she has been a part of several committees which also included being a member of the Delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula (DARP).

Furthermore, her Italian husband worked as a sailing instructor in addition to being an assistant to an MEP. Reportedly, he was also seen in Qatar on business in 2018. She had also earlier claimed that her grandfather had been assassinated by communists which were later shown to be completely false, however, Kaili did not apologise and nor was she held accountable, said a report by Politico.

How have the MEPs reacted to the case?

So far, since the scandal has come to light, Kaili has been suspended from her duties as the EU parliament VP and has been expelled from both the social-democratic PASOK party in Greece and the Socialists & Democrats group in the European Parliament.

The EU parliament group took to Twitter and said, “The Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament has taken the decision to suspend MEP Eva Kaili’s membership of the S&D Group with immediate effect, in response to the ongoing investigations.” Furthermore, they have also recently come under increased scrutiny for their connections to those charged and their advocacy on behalf of Qatar.

Amid the ongoing investigation, the other S&D members have also agreed to step away from their key assignments. This also comes as the case also raised questions about the 27-nation bloc’s credibility, said the EU senior leaders, while the president of the EU parliament, Roberta Metsola, said, “European Democracy is under attack,” and vowed to open an internal probe on the matter.

“It was quite obvious that a few colleagues from the S&D group had a strong pro-Qatari agenda. However, I never thought that in some cases this might be linked to illegal external interference and the allegations have shocked me,” said Hannah Neumann, the German MEP and DARP chair to Euronews.

She also noted how during her tenure she had seen “some embassies” trying to influence the committee’s decision “more aggressively” when compared to others. However, if these allegations turn out to be true about Qatar, or any other country attempting to influence MEPs by offering large bribes it will burden the diplomatic relations as well as her work with the delegation, said Neumann.

Notably, Kaili had recently visited Qatar and hailed the country as a “frontrunner in labour rights” after a meeting with the country’s labour minister, amid reports of poor working conditions and several migrant workers dying during the construction of the FIFA stadium.

“The World Cup in Qatar is proof, actually, of how sports diplomacy can achieve a historical transformation of a country with reforms that inspired the Arab world…Still, some here are calling to discriminate against them. They bully them and they accuse everyone that talks to them or engages of corruption,” Kaili had said, in her speech, last month.
