At the United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday (April 24), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned the 15-member body about the world reaching a threshold “possibly even more dangerous” than during the Cold War. At the same forum, Western diplomats accused Moscow, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the UNSC, of hypocrisy while some also condemned its invasion of Ukraine.

Lavrov’s remarks at the UNSC

Russia’s top diplomat was leading the session titled “maintenance of international peace and security,” which was focused on the maintenance of the UN charter, international rules, and multilateralism. “As during the Cold War, we have reached the dangerous, possibly even more dangerous threshold,” said Lavrov, while addressing the council.

He added, “the situation is worsened with the loss of trust in multilateralism.” The Russian foreign minister also went on to talk about how “nobody allowed the Western minority to speak for all of humankind. They need to be polite and respect all members of the international community.”

Lavrov also accused the “United States and its allies” of “abandoning diplomacy and demanding clarification of relations on the battlefield.”

Notably, the last time Russia presided over the council was February 2022 which is the same month it launched what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Lavrov, during his address, mentioned acts of aggression by the West including the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the invasion of Iraq, and so on.

The West slams Russia

During the session, several diplomats including the United States, United Kingdom, and Switzerland condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Our hypocritical convener today, Russia, invaded its neighbour, Ukraine, and struck at the heart of the UN Charter,” said the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

She added, “This illegal, unprovoked and unnecessary war runs directly counter to our most shared principles – that a war of aggression and territorial conquest is never, ever acceptable.” Furthermore, the US representative also spoke about how as they sit there as “aggression continues…Russian forces continue to kill and injure civilians.”

The US representative also called for the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. The meeting was also attended by Elizabeth Whelan, an American whose brother, Paul Whelan, is imprisoned in Russia.

Ahead of the UNSC session, the European Union countries, along similar lines, issued a statement which condemned Moscow. “Russia is trying to portray itself as a defender of the UN charter and multilateralism. Nothing can be further from the truth. It’s cynical,” said Olaf Skoog, the EU representative to the UN.

UN chief criticises Russia over its invasion of Ukraine

In his opening remarks to the session, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who was sitting next to Lavrov also condemned the Russian invasion and said that it was in “violation of the United Nations Charter and international law, is causing massive suffering and devastation to the country and its people, and adding to the global economic dislocation triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic”.

He added, “Tensions between major powers are at an historic high. So are the risks of conflict, through misadventure or miscalculation.”

Russia’s Lavrov warns about world being on ‘dangerous threshold’, slammed by West at UNSC

The recently elected Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has garnered criticism over his stance on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and said he does not want to “please anyone” with his views about the conflict, on Saturday (April 22), amid his five-day visit to Portugal.

What did Lula say in Lisbon?

The statement came after he arrived a day prior, in Portugal, and was faced with protests as many stood waving Ukrainian flags and holding photographs depicting conflict atrocities outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon.

Lula’s stance has not only angered the people in Lisbon but also the West and Kyiv for suggesting Ukraine and Russia are to blame for the conflict that began over a year ago. Addressing the press in the Portuguese capital, on Saturday, beginning his first visit to Europe after being elected president he called for a “negotiated” settlement between Kyiv and Moscow.

“While my government condemns the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, we support a negotiated political solution to the conflict,” said Lula, following a meeting with the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He added, “Brazil does not want to take part in this war. Brazil wants to create peace.”

Last week, the Brazilian president faced criticism after he said the United States and its European allies should stop supplying arms to Ukraine as they are prolonging the war. “If you are not making peace, you are contributing to war,” said Lula.

Subsequently, the White House accused him of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda”, while the Ukrainian government has criticised the Brazilian president for treating "the victim and the aggressor” the same way.

Protests in Lisbon over Lula’s visit

Portugal is a founding member of NATO and also sent military aid to Ukraine while the country’s president has previously said that Kyiv had the right to defend itself. On Saturday, Rebelo de Sousa also acknowledged that Portugal has a “different position” on the ongoing conflict adding that “for a road to peace to become a possibility, Ukraine must first have the right to respond to the invasion.”

The capital city of Portugal witnessed protests, on Friday, after many gathered outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon over Lula’s recent remarks.

A Ukrainian refugee named Yana Kolomiiets who was among the protesters and had been in Portugal for four months and said she felt “terrible” after hearing Lula’s comments last week, reported Reuters. The 27-year-old also said, “It has made me so upset because I don't know how the president of Brazil can support (Russian President Vladimir) Putin…this killer.”

Five countries have expanded imports of Russian oil in the wake of the Ukraine invasion and refined it into products they are selling to countries that have sanctioned Russian oil, according to a report released today by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).

These five countries are laundering Russian oil and selling it to the West

Russian oil exports reached their highest level in nearly three years, despite sanctions from the West, said the International Energy Agency (IEA), on Friday (April 14). However, Moscow's oil revenues have dropped sharply from last year, it added. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine over a year ago, there have been thousands of sanctions against Russia including price caps on its exports and EU embargoes.

According to the IEA’s monthly oil market report, total shipments from Russia rose by 600,000 barrels per day to 8.1 million bpd last month, which is the highest since April 2020. However, while Moscow’s oil revenues rebounded by $1 billion to $12.7 billion, they were still nearly 43 per cent lower when compared to a year ago, said the Paris-based agency.

In March, Russian crude oil exports rose by 100,000 bpd to 5 million bpd with India effectively replacing China as Moscow’s main market in Asia, last month. Additionally, the IEA also said that the oil product shipments destined for the EU almost doubled between February and March to 300,000 bpd.

Months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU imposed an embargo on seaborne oil deliveries from Moscow in December along with a $60 per barrel price cap for exports across the world, the move which was agreed to by the Group of Seven (G7) nations and Australia.

Earlier this year, the EU expanded its ban on Russian oil and agreed with the G7 to the price ceilings of $100 per barrel for more expensive fuel like diesel and $45 on lower-quality products such as fuel oil.

Seemingly, in retaliation, Russia announced that it would be reducing its production by 500,000 bpd along with other OPEC+ member nations which sent shockwaves across the market.

According to the IEA, Russia missed its target in March as production fell by 290,000 bpd. “Consumers currently under siege from inflation will suffer even more from higher prices, especially in emerging and developing economies,” said the Paris-based agency. It added, “This augurs badly for the economic recovery and growth.”

The announcement, which cuts a total of 1.7 million bpd was also months after the group had agreed to a reduction of two million bpd back in November. The exports by Russia also returned pre-Covid levels as they have risen by 450,000 bpd to 3.1 million bpd.

You are responsible for strained relations: Putin tells US & EU

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (April 5) bluntly accused the United States and the European Union of being responsible for strain in relations with Russia. He made the accusation in front of the respective ambassadors during a ceremony in Kremlin. Russian ties with the West have seen dramatic deterioration since Russian invasion of Ukraine last year.

The EU and US ambassadors were among 17 who formally presented their diplomatic credentials to Putin at a televised ceremony in the Kremlin.

Putin told new US ambassador Lynne Tracy that US support for a revolution in Ukraine in 2014 had led to the current situation where Russia and Ukraine were in conflict.

He said relations were in "a deep crisis" that was "based on fundamentally different approaches to the formation of the modern world order".

"Dear Madam Ambassador, I know you may not agree, but I cannot but say that the United States' use ... of such tools as support for the so-called 'colour revolutions', support in this regard for the coup in Kyiv in 2014, ultimately led to today's Ukrainian crisis," Putin said.

Putin took a similar line with the new EU ambassador, Roland Galharague, who took up his position in September, telling him that "the European Union initiated a geopolitical confrontation with Russia".

Putin also accused the West of staging terror attacks in Russia.

"There are grounds to assert that the potential of third countries, Western intelligence services is being used to stage sabotage and terrorist attacks," Putin said without providing any evidence.

During his speech, Putin also urged Denmark to support Russian proposal of an independent international commission to investigate the blasts that ruptured the Nord Stream undersea pipelines. Nord Stream pipelines bring natural gas from Russia to Germany.

Putin also stressed that Russia was open to constructive partnership with every country and would not isolate itself, despite the complex situation in the world.

Despite a rampant rise in terrorism in Pakistan, the country has been taken off European Commission's high-risk third countries list, as EU takes a line similar to global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog FATF which removed the country from its grey list last year.

The EU's “High-Risk Third Countries” list includes countries which the union considers to have strategic deficiencies in their anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing frameworks.

The commission updated its list where it added the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gibraltar, Mozambique, Tanzania and the United Arab Emirates, while delisting other jurisdictions namely Nicaragua, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

European Union threatened to impose sanctions on Belarus on Sunday (March 26) in what may be first major pushback from the West against Russian plans to station tactical nuclear weapons in the country. EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said this in no uncertain terms.

"Belarus hosting Russian nuclear weapons would mean an irresponsible escalation and threat to European security. Belarus can still stop it, it is their choice. The EU stands ready to respond with further sanctions," he tweeted.

Russian President Vladimir Putin himseld announced on Saturday that Russia plans to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Belarusian regime led by President Lukashenko is a strong ally of Russia.

Tactical nuclear weapons are aimed at gaining decisive advantage in a local battlefield as opposed to 'strategic' nuclear weapons which have capacity to flatten entire cities in one go.

Putin said that the planned deployment was similar to moves from the US, which stores such weapons in bases across Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey, an analogy western allies called "misleading".

EU warns of new sanctions if Belarus hosts Russian nukes

The European Union and Germany, on Saturday (March 25), struck a deal which would decide the future use of combustion engines, said officials. In line with the agreement, a planned phaseout on the sale of cars using fossil fuels will take place by 2035. However, it also allowed some combustion engines beyond the 2035 mark, a move which has since drawn condemnation from the prominent environmental group, Greenpeace.

The deal also ends the dispute between Berlin and Brussels over the manufacturing of cars which use so-called e-fuels. This comes as Berlin wanted assurances that new combustion engine cars can be sold beyond the deadline if they run on e-fuels. In line with this, the Germany and EU have decided that they would allow cars to be registered after that date, providing that any fuel they use is exclusively carbon neutral, as per media reports.

“We have found an agreement with Germany on the future use of e-fuels in cars,” EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans wrote on Twitter. He added, “We will work now on getting the CO2 standards for cars regulation adopted as soon as possible, and the Commission will follow up swiftly with the necessary legal steps.”

Meanwhile, German Transport Minister Volker Wissing had also taken to the microblogging platform and said that “the way is clear” after the agreement was reached, late Friday. He added, “Vehicles with internal combustion engines can still be newly registered after 2035 if they fill up exclusively with CO2-neutral fuels.”

The EU diplomats are yet to vote on the formal approval of the 2035 phase-out law. Sweden, which currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, said that the voting will take place on Monday.

The landmark deal will prohibit new sales of fossil fuel cars from 2035, however, in an unprecedented move earlier this month a leading car producer blocked the agreement at the last minute after it had been approved through the EU’s legislative process, reported AFP.

“This stinky compromise undermines climate protection in transport, and it harms Europe,” said Benjamin Stephan of Greenpeace, as per Reuters. He added that it dilutes the needed focus of the auto industry on efficient electromobility.

The development of the synthetic fuels that Berlin had sought an exemption for, is said to be produced using low-carbon electricity but the technology remains unproven. While German manufacturers hope it will lead to the extended use of combustion engines, Environmental NGOs have disputed its value to the transition towards clean energy sources and said that it is expensive, polluting and energy-intensive.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg travelled to the Troll A platform in the North Sea on Friday (March 17). The platform extracts gas from Norway's biggest gas field. The visit has drawn attention to and underlined importance of Norwegian gas for the energy security of Europe. After Russia reduced natural gas supply to Europe last year, Norway became the largest gas supplier to the EU.

Stoltenberg and von der Leyen will "discuss the protection and resilience of critical infrastructure and gas supplies to Europe" with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere and Equinor CEO Anders Opedal, the PM's office said in a statement.

Security at Norwegian petroleum installations was increased after the explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines on Sept. 26, 2022 in the Baltic Sea, with NATO allies providing military support.

Troll alone covered 11.3% of EU gas consumption last year, according to operator Equinor. The field accounts for one third of daily Norwegian gas exports to Europe.

NATO, EU chiefs visit North Sea gas platform as Norway compensates Russia supply slash

The EU unveiled plans to make electricity bills "less dependent" on fossil fuel costs to reduce the likelihood of price hikes similar to those seen when Russia invaded Ukraine.

Since the conflict in Moscow last year pushed prices skyrocketing for both corporations and everyday users, Brussels has been striving to modernise its electrical grid.

In Europe, the cost of the most expensive energy sources—typically gas-powered plants, which are adaptable enough to meet spikes in demand—is used to determine wholesale energy prices.

Gas prices rose tremendously after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent in his troops, taking EU electricity costs with them and leaving governments struggling to compensate consumers.

"For over two decades the electricity market design has served European companies and consumers, letting them enjoy the benefits of a single market," said European energy commissioner Kadri Simson.

"However, the crisis spurred by Russia's attack on Ukraine exposed a number of shortcomings in the current system which needed to be addressed."

Several nations, such as France and Spain, have demanded a complete overhauling of the system and a complete decoupling of the price of electricity from the price of gas.

Nonetheless, the proposals made by the EU's executive branch, the specifics of which must now be worked out between the European Parliament and member states, fall short of those requirements.

By promoting long-term contracts for renewable energy, they seek to bring down the impact of variable fossil fuel pricing as opposed to making a complete transition.

The measures would provide citizens additional rights to negotiate long-term fixed-price contracts with their energy provider, reducing their susceptibility to the sudden price increase.

More than a million refugees and migrants, many of them escaping the Syrian civil war, arrived at EU coastlines during the surge.

The funeral for Kamvysi will be held on Monday in her hamlet on Lesbos, according to the Greek national news agency ANA, which broke the news of her passing.
