According to a draught set of regulations seen by Reuters and driven by EU parliamentarians worried about the state of human rights in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, products created using forced labour or those imported into the 27-nation European Union will be prohibited.

However, due in part to legislative limitations, the European Commission's proposed guidelines are less comprehensive than those put out by EU legislators.

Before the regulations can become law, the EU executive, which will present its plan on Tuesday, must negotiate the specifics with legislators and EU member states.

"Such prohibition should apply to products for which forced labour has been used at any stage of their production, manufacture, harvest and extraction, including working or processing related to the products," the document said.

"The prohibition should apply to all products, of any type, including their components, and should apply to products regardless of the sector, the origin, whether they are domestic or imported, or placed or made available on the Union market or exported."

Because the hazards of forced labour are more widespread and the impact is expected to be greater, the laws are aimed at major economic actors like importers, manufacturers, producers, and product suppliers, according to the study.

However, it is the responsibility of the national authorities to substantiate any claims that the products were produced or processed using forced labour, and initial inquiries must be completed within 30 working days.

The products can then be removed from the market or blocked from circulation by customs authorities.

Europe is reeling under a major energy crisis in the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine war. Now, Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten has shot off a warning that the continent faces terrible winters for the next 5-10 years if no cap is put on the gas prices. “The next 5 to 10 winters will be terrible if nothing is done, We must act at the source, at [the] European level, and work on freezing gas prices,” tweeted Van der Straeten. Les 5 à 10 prochains hivers seront terribles si on ne fait rien. Il faut agir à la source, au niveau européen et travailler sur un blocage des prix pour le gaz. On pourrait ainsi réduire la facture énergétique de 770 euros. — Tinne Van der Straeten (@TinneVdS) August 28, 2022 × The minister further stated that if the gas prices are capped, it could help reduce energy bills by $771 per year, per family. "There is an urgent need to introduce a European price cap. This can reduce the energy bill by 770 euros per year per family. At the EU level, the price cap has the greatest impact, but we can no longer rule out price blocks at the Belgian level either," The Belgian minister also asserted that her country had put the proposal in front of the EU with Germany backing it as well. “The European energy market is failing and urgently needs reform. This is no longer tenable for many families and companies. Electricity is produced as cheaply as last year but sold at record prices. By reforming, we are tackling exuberant excess profits.” added Van der Straeten. Following the issue over Northern Ireland, the UK has opened a dispute with the EU, accusing it of violating the terms of the Brexit accord by excluding it from scientific research initiatives. The trade and cooperation agreement had been a "clear breach," according to Liz Truss, the foreign secretary and front-runner for the Tory leadership. Her government had written to Brussels to request official dispute negotiations.

The UK government asserted that the EU was seriously harming research and development in both the UK and EU member states by barring Britain from participating in programmes like the Earth observation programme Copernicus, the nuclear research programme Euratom, the space surveillance and tracking programme, and the Horizon programme for science research.

“The EU is in clear breach of our agreement, repeatedly seeking to politicise vital scientific cooperation by refusing to finalise access to these important programmes,” she said, as reported by The Guardian. “We cannot allow this to continue. That is why the UK has launched formal consultations and will do everything necessary to protect the scientific community.”

Blazes that have torched tens of thousands of hectares of forest in France, Spain and Portugal have made 2022 a record year for wildfire activity in southwestern Europe, the EU's satellite monitoring service said Friday.

Amid a prolonged heatwave that saw temperature records tumble, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) said that France had in the last three months reached the highest levels of carbon pollution from wildfires since records began in 2003.

It follows Spain registering its highest ever wildfire carbon emissions last month.

CAMS said the daily total fire radiative power -- a measure of the blazes' intensity -- in France, Spain and Portugal in July and August was "significantly higher" than average.

The service warned that a large proportion of western Europe was now in "extreme fire danger" with some areas of "very extreme fire danger".

"We have been monitoring an increase in the number and resulting emissions of wildfires as heatwave conditions have exacerbated fires in southwestern France and the Iberian Peninsula," said Mark Parrington, CAMS senior scientist.

"The very extreme fire danger ratings that have been forecasted for large areas of southern Europe mean that the scale and intensity of any fires can be greatly increased, and this is what we have been observing in our emissions estimates and the impacts it has on local air quality."

CAMS released satellite imagery showing a plume of smoke from the huge in southwestern France extending hundreds of kilometres over the Atlantic.

France has received help battling the latest blaze -- which is 40-kilometres (25 miles) wide and which forced some 10,000 people to evacuate the region -- in the form of 361 firefighters from European neighbours including Germany, Poland, Austria and Romania.

Globally, 2022 is currently the fourth highest year in terms of wildfire carbon, CAMS said.

EU drone helping Libya send migrants to 'abuse': HRW

In a newspaper interview, the head of the Swiss organisation that executes economic sanctions stated that she anticipates the impartial nation will enact any severe measures the European Union launches against China in the event that it invades Taiwan. China has increased its military presence in the region of Taiwan in an effort to exert pressure on the democratically elected administration there to recognise Chinese sovereignty.

The government of Taiwan claims that only the 23 million residents of the island can decide its future and that, despite its desire for peace, it will defend itself if attacked. Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, director of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), responded, "I strongly believe that we would adopt such sanctions," in response to a question from the Neue Zuercher Zeitung newspaper.

Ineichen-Fleisch defended Switzerland's track record of supporting EU sanctions against Russian individuals and businesses in response to Moscow's "special military operation" invasion of Ukraine in February. There is increasing pressure on Switzerland, a favourite vacation spot of Moscow's elite and a repository of Russian riches, to more rapidly locate and seize the assets of hundreds of Russians who have been subjected to sanctions.

Ineichen-Fleisch stated that as of this month, Switzerland had frozen 15 properties and 6.7 billion Swiss francs ($7.04 billion) worth of Russian financial assets.
