Russia Today, a media outlet controlled by the Russian state on Wednesday (July 27) lost court fight against ban imposed by the European Union (EU). The ban was imposed in the month of March over alleged disinformation. The court verdict has led to Kremlin warning of retaliation against Western media.

Europe's second-highest court has upheld the decision to impose the ban.

"The Grand Chamber of the General Court dismisses RT France's application for annulment of acts of the Council, adopted following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, temporarily prohibiting that organisation from broadcasting content," the Luxembourg-based General Court said.

Brussels had accused Russia Today of systematic disinformation over Russian invasion of Europe.

Judges of the General Court dismissed Russia Today's argument that ban curtailed its freedom of expression.

"The limitations on RT France's freedom of expression which the restrictive measures at issue are liable to have are proportionate, inasmuch as they are appropriate and necessary to the aims pursued," judges said in their ruling.

"The Court also finds that those measures do not disproportionately infringe the essential content of RT France's freedom to conduct a business since they are temporary and reversible," they said.

The Kremlin termed the court's decision as "extremely negative". It said that Moscow would take similar measures against Western media.

Dmmitry Pescov, Kremlin spokespersom said Russia Today was unable to work in Europe. But said that he hoped loopholes can be found in the judgment to resume broadcasting.

RT France said it would appeal to the Court of Justice of the European Union, Europe's highest.

"The Court's confirmation of this general ban with an uncertain term unfortunately shows that the judicial power of the European Union cannot or does not want to oppose political power," Xenia Fedorova, president of RT France, said in a statement.

The EU sanction applies to RT's English unit and operations in Britain, Germany, France and Spain.

EU court upholds ban on Russia Today, Moscow warns of retaliation

Jubilations were witnessed across Croatia after its long-awaited bridge linking its southern Adriatic coast with the rest of the country—as it bypasses a narrow strip of Bosnian territory—was opened for the public.

The 2.4-km cable-stayed bridge was funded by the European Union and built by China, reports BBC.

The Croatian bridge contract was awarded to a Chinese state-owned company, The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). It bid far less than its European rivals, prompting an Austrian company to file a complaint, alleging that CRBC was "price-dumping" and receiving Chinese state aid.

The bridge reaches out from the Croatian mainland to the Peljesac peninsula. The inauguration ceremony started Tuesday early morning, with musical performances and a boat race, while scores of pedestrians clocked selfies on the bridge.

“It is a major thing for people here since they did not even feel like they were living in their own country,” said Joso Miletic, 75, who travelled from his village near the city of Zadar, on the central coast, to watch the opening of the bridge, told AFP news agency. “This is the merging of Croatia into a whole.”

The bridge is regarded as the country’s most ambitious infrastructure projects since Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

Until this bridge was conceived, people used to travel from mainland Croatia to its southern coast via a land belonging to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The present arrangement of the border stems from the fact that when the former Yugoslavia broke up and Croatia became independent in 1991, the new borders of the Croatian coastline were split by a 9-km-long section of Bosnian coastline known as the Neum corridor.

Since Croatia is part of the EU and Bosnia is not, residents trying to travel between the two ends of the Croatian border had to go through two border checks.

But now anyone can drive straight along Croatia's Adriatic coast via the new bridge.

About 85 per cent of the cost of the bridge was funded by the EU, which spent €357m (£300m) using cohesion funds for what it said would improve significantly the everyday lives of Croatians, according to BBC.

European Commission has unveiled a 'joint weapon-purchase' proposal. The $500 Million plan will help European countries buy weapons as a group. What explains this shift? Palki Sharma reports.

Gravitas: EU unveils 'joint weapon-purchase plan'

The European Commission on Wednesday urged the EU countries to cut demand for natural gas by 15 per cent over coming months. This step is being recommended to secure winter stocks and fight Russian "blackmail". EU commissioners have announced an emergency plan and has urged member states to give Brussels powers to impose compulsory energy rationing in case Russia cuts Europe's gas.

Last year Russia provided 40 per cent of Europe's total consumption of natural gas. However, in the wake of Ukraine conflict and EU imposing sanctions on Russia, it is widely expected that Russia would significantly reduce gas supply as a retaliatory measure. It has already started to do so.

Any further disruption to supply would also push consumer prices higher and raise the risk of a deep recession.

"Russia is blackmailing us," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters.

"Russia is using energy as a weapon and therefore, in any event, whether it's a partial major cut off of Russian gas or total cut off... Europe needs to be ready."

Europe is eagerly watching whether Russia will resume gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on Thursday when scheduled maintenance is due to be completed.

German pipeline manager Gascade said it expected Russian gas deliveries to resume at 40 percent of capacity, the level of supplies before maintenance work.

On Wednesday evening, the president of Germany's Federal Network Agency Klaus Mueller estimated on Twitter that the delivery on Thursday might only be "around 30 percent" of the capacity, after updating the data.

EU asks countries to cut gas use to tackle Russian 'blackmail'

The European Commission, the EU’s executive body, released a plan Wednesday that pushes governments to prepare for a winter without ample supplies of Russian gas.

European commission plans to give itself gas rationing powers

The ongoing crisis Ukraine has resulted in the United States and the European Union (EU) imposing hard sanctions on Russia. One of the sectors that the western countries targeted was the gas exports but considering Europe’s dependency on Russia, a total boycott has been difficult to pull off. However, with rising fears of Russia cutting down on the gas supplies, the EU has now found a new source. On Monday, they signed a new gas deal with Azerbaijan who have committed to deliver 20 billion cubic meters by the year 2027, according to the statement released by the two parties.

Azerbaijan is slowly becoming a major supplier of gas in the region since they started exporting to Europe in 2020. They had prior agreements with Bulgaria, Italy and Greece.

With the new agreement with EU, they are expected to increase their supply from 8.1 billion cubic meters in 2021 to 12 billion cubic meters in 2022.

The deal was finalised in the presence of Europe’s energy chief, Kadri Simson, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen who travelled to Azerbaijan for the official signing.

“Amid Russia’s continued weaponization of its energy supplies, diversification of our energy imports is a top priority for the EU,” the European Commission said in a statement earlier on Friday.

Although there were some doubts regarding Russia’s use of gas supplies as a threat, a letter from Russian energy company Gazprom said that they were unable to “fulfil their commitments” due to “extraordinary” circumstances., Reuters reported.

The European Union on Friday (July 15) formally proposed latest package of sanctions that includes an import ban on Russian gold. European Commission said in a statement that new measures are considered ""a maintenance and alignment package"

Reuters said that officials privately referred to it as a "sixth-and-a-half" set of sanctions. This was in reference to its limited scope. Six previous rounds of sanctions hit Russian oil or coal.

Some measures could still have a serious impact on the affected sectors.

"We do want to make sure that the war finishes as quickly as possible so that the economic price that Russia has to pay becomes ever higher - the price it has to pay for its aggression," EU Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic told a news conference before the sanctions were announced.

In order for these measures to become law, EU countries must now agree on this measures. Europeam diplomats said that the measures were uncontroversial and should pass through easily.

According to Russian customs data, Britain is the largest buyer of Russian gold with 290 tonnes in 2020 worth $16.9 billion.

But a senior EU official insisted that the EU's decision will not be merely symbolic as "it will cut off another tap of funding for Putin's war in Ukraine".

The European Commission cut its forecasts for economic growth in the euro zone for this year and next and revised up its estimates for inflation on Thursday (July 14) largely due to the impact of the war in Ukraine.

In its quarterly forecasts, Brussels confirmed its more downbeat outlook, which it had already discussed with euro zone finance ministers on Monday.

The EU executive now predicts growth of 2.6% this year for the 19-country currency bloc, slightly less than the 2.7% it had forecast in May.

But next year, when the impact of the Ukraine war and of higher energy prices may be felt even more acutely, growth is now forecast to be 1.4%, instead of the 2.3% previously estimated.

At a news conference, EU economy commissioner Paolo Gentiloni also said the fall of the euro to parity against the dollar was a major concern largely for developing economies, rather than for the euro zone, because the euro was appreciating against other major currencies.

For the wider 27-country European Union, the growth forecast was unchanged at 2.7% this year, but revised down to 1.5% in 2023 from 2.3%.

In a major change, the Commission also raised its estimates for euro zone inflation, which this year is now expected to peak at 7.6% before falling to 4.0% in 2023.

In May, the Commission had forecast prices in the euro zone would rise 6.1% this year and 2.7% in 2023.

Brussels warned headline inflation could move even higher if gas prices soared due to Russia cutting off supplies, which might lead to a further downward revision of growth.

Risks to the outlook from a resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic could also not be ruled out, the Commission said.

Despite these high risks, the Commission underlined that the euro zone was not expected to tip into a recession and the forecasts could also improve if recent declines of oil and commodity prices continued.

If a friend is going on a long drive in a half-occupied car and you hitchhike with him, it saves you the huge cost and makes better use of the available resource. Similarly, there are small scientific payloads (hitchhikers) from Indian start-ups and others, who are hitchhiking on ISRO's to-be-launched PSLV- C53 mission (the half-occupied vehicle going on a long drive). However, this time around ISRO is not just performing the role of orbiting the hitchhiking payloads, but will also provide a stabilized orbiting platform for them. This new experiment by ISRO is known as 'POEM' or PSLV Orbital Experimental Module. WION explains how 'POEM' works and what it is meant to do.

The European Union (EU) proposed to ban the use of flavoured heated tobacco products in Europe on Wednesday because of concerns about their increasing popularity and health effects. "With nine out of ten lung cancers caused by tobacco, we want to make smoking as unattractive as possible to protect the health of our citizens and save lives," said EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides in a statement.

The European Commission, EU's executive arm, said the ban was part of its ambition to decrease tobacco use in the 27-country bloc to less than 5% of the population by 2040. Vaping products can come in a wide variety of flavours such as bubble gum, chocolate and cotton candy, which critics say help attract younger users. The defenders of the devices say vaping products are a valuable aid to quitting tobacco.

A recent Commission report decried an explosion in the sales of vaping devices in the EU, giving it the right to widen an existing law from 2014 on the prohibition of tobacco products. The report also said that a conservative estimate for 2020 put the share of retail sales for vaping products at 3.33% of all tobacco products in the EU.

The proposal, which focuses only on flavoured vaping products, will now undergo scrutiny by the EU's 27 governments as well as the European Parliament and come into force if it faces no objections.

In the US, a court on Friday put on hold the health regulator's decision to ban vaping products by industry giant Juul Labs over safety concerns. Juul came under fire for a surge in youth vaping over its marketing of fruit and candy-flavoured e-cigarettes, which it stopped selling in 2019.

In January 2020, US regulators said the sale of e-cigarettes in flavours other than tobacco or menthol would be illegal unless specifically authorised by the government.
