The European Union has agreed to ban seaborne imports of Russian oil. This would be done in a phased period of six months for crude products and eight months for refined products. But EU has not entirely banned Russian oil imports. How will this affect Russia?

A landmark law, Digital Markets Act, was agreed on Thursday to curb the market dominance of US big tech giants by negotiators of the European Parliament and EU member states.

These companies include Amazon, Google, Meta and Apple.

What is Digital Markets Act?

The "Digital Markets Act" (DMA) is designed to protect consumers. It also gives rivals a better chance to survive against the powerful tech firms. It contains about 20 rules.

Over the past few decades, Europe has become massively dependent on Russian oil and natural gas and which is why energy has been at the forefront of the European debate.

European Union leaders reached a compromise deal to impose a partial oil embargo on Russia at a summit focused on supporting Ukraine with a long-term delay package of sanctions blocked by Hungary.

EU leaders on Monday backed a ban on more than two-thirds of Russian oil imports, in a compromise deal with Hungary to punish Russia for the war in Ukraine.

EU leaders to ban over two-third of oil imports from Russia

In order to reprimand Russia over Ukraine war, European Union (EU) leaders have finally decided to cut 90% oil imports from Moscow. The ban will be implemented by the end of the year. But the move seems to have triggered a spike in the prices of the commodity. The price of oil witnessed a hike in early Asian trade on Tuesday, media reports said. The Russian oil’s ban looks to tighten the global crude market, which was already under pressure due to the supply constraints.

The Brent crude futures for July rose 63 cents to $122.30 a barrel at around 0012 GMT. It will end on Tuesday. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were selling at $117.65 a barrel, which is up $2.58 from closure on Friday. As Monday was a US public holiday, there was no settlement.

Iran nuclear deal talks are 'reopened', says EU

Amid the ongoing Ukraine war, Japan has agreed to further cooperation with the European Union during the Japan-EU summit as the top EU diplomat said that Europe wants a more big role in Asia and welcomes a Japanese participation in action against Russia.

EU has now proposed an orderly ban on Russian oil imports and this comes after the Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he will now seize all export deals and contracts with the US and its European allies if they continue to support Ukraine.

Russia-Ukraine crisis: EU proposes 'orderly' ban on Russian oil import

French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed that a "European political community" should be built that would be broader than the European Union and would include nations that are not members of the 27-member bloc.

Emmanuel Macron suggests a 'political European community' to include nations outside EU

A major demand from Ukraine from the start of the Russian invasion has been an accelerated process to include them in the European Union. However, although western countries have helped them with ammunition and funds, the EU membership still remains a far-fetched dream.

France president Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that it can take decades before Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union. During his speech at the EU parliament, he suggested that Ukraine should consider joining a "parallel European community" in the meantime.

"We all know perfectly well that the process to allow [Ukraine] to join would take several years indeed, probably several decades," Macron said on Monday according to the BBC.

"That is the truth, unless we decide to lower the standards for accession. And rethink the unity of our Europe," he added while talking about the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

There have been talks about accelerating the membership process but it seems unlikely considering the past record of the EU. Macron insisted that the introduction of another parallel organisation can be "a way of anchoring countries which are geographically in Europe and share our values."

Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky has asked for a special consideration from the EU and the Ukrainian authorities submitted the second part of their application on Monday.

However, the membership of the European Union is generally granted keeping a number of factors in mind like the economic and global standing of the nations but considering the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, there is a slight chance that the EU may decide to treat this as a special situation.

In an effort to win over hesitant governments like Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, the European Commission is proposing amendments to its planned embargo on Russian oil.
