England hockey team were stunned in their campaign opener of the 14th edition of hockey World Cup by debutants China on Friday at Odisha's Kalinga Stadium.

The high-octane match became intriguing in the fourth and final quarter which saw multiple ups and down for both the team.

In the first quarter, China's striker Guo Xiaoping hammered team's first goal which was equalised by England's Mark Gleghorne with the help of a penalty corner.

China's men's hockey team's best result in the sport to date is a silver medal finish at the 2006 Doha Asian Games and after the thirling entry in the World cup, the team is definitely in the title race.

After two goalless quarters, England got a breakthrough in the 48th minute as Liam Ansell scored but in a turn of events, China's Talake Du netted the equalizer in a nail-biting finish.

Talake Du was given the player of the match for his crucial contribution to his team.

China's South Korean coach Sang Ryul Kim praised the lion-hearted efforts of his men, saying the result came as a "surprise" to him.

"We came here with no high expectation as we are making our debut. What we wanted was to show fight and we did that today. It was a gritty performance from the boys and it was a good surprise to see us score 2 goals today," Kim said after the match.

As the Brexit negotiations head towards an endgame, there is turmoil all around. British politics is on knife’s edge with the future of Prime Minister Theresa May and in some ways the entire Conservative Party on the line. The Opposition, too, is struggling to put its own house in order and even the European Union is facing disunity within its ranks despite pretensions of a united front.

Last week, an agreement on the withdrawal deal was reached in principle by May and the European Union (EU) which included a £39 billion “divorce bill” and the controversial customs “backstop” which keeps the UK temporarily in the EU customs union so as to prevent the return of manned customs posts at the Irish border. However, the joint political declaration on future relations which is to be confirmed on Sunday is only temporary. It will be the 21-month transition period after Britain leaves the EU on March 29, 2019, that would see the finalisation of the binding agreement. And this has led to challenges from all sides.

May is struggling to finalise a Brexit deal to be agreed at this Sunday’s summit of European leaders even as she is under pressure from her own MPs not to cede any further ground in negotiations. For the time being, her threat is that she has managed to get the best possible deal from the EU and that it’s either this deal or no deal and, therefore, no Brexit that has secured her position. But there is a demand for more clarity on all sides of the British Parliament about the exact terms of UK’s future engagement with the EU if at all the Parliament is to support the deal.

Despite a number of resignations from her cabinet and backroom manoeuvring to topple her from No 10 Downing Street, May looks stronger today than she looked last week and that’s a tribute to her own political skills and quite an accomplishment under the present circumstances. Yet her critics remain unrelenting. One of her strongest detractors, Jacob Rees-Mogg, has made a case that the time has come for May’s detractors to push for a confidence vote in May or face the spectacle of her leading the Tories into the next election. But he has accepted that he doesn’t have the required threshold of 48 letters needed to trigger a contest for Tory leadership. Opinion polls are also underscoring that support for May is growing among the British populace which is looking for a speedy resolution of this crisis.

On the other side, the EU had to complete the text on future ties with the UK on Tuesday but several member states have raised objection, leading to a delay. Countries have highlighted several issues such as UK access to the EU single market, access to UK waters for EU boats as well as Gibraltar. Spain, which is worried about the future status of Gibraltar, has warned it will reject the draft Brexit withdrawal deal without a clarification of the text on future talks on the status of Gibraltar. France has raised concerns about fishing rights and nations as the Netherlands and Denmark, remain concerned about the potential competitive advantage to UK businesses over the European without the UK being tied to strict environmental regulations.

Despite these concerns, Brussels would be hoping that when it would come to the crunch on Sunday, all 27 member nations of the EU would sign up to the Brexit deal so as to avoid a situation where there is a no deal and further uncertainty haunts the region. And in some ways, it is in EU’s interest that the British Prime Minister gets her plan approved by the British Parliament. A domestic political crisis in the UK is not in EU’s interest at this critical juncture. May also wants to demonstrate that she is fighting hard to secure British interests. So in a way, both May and the EU are sailing in the same boat.

As Britain struggles with its future relationship with the EU, its outreach to nations like India has been growing in order to seek out new avenues for economic relationships. British officials have been signalling that Brexit could augur well for trade ties between India and the EU as the two nations would find it easier to conclude a free trade pact without the involvement of the entire panoply of EU member states.

The economic relationship between the UK and India certainly remains a robust one. While the two nations can look forward to a potential FTA, the negotiations can only proceed once the UK has put its own house in order. India will also be looking for concessions on Indian skilled labour accessing UK markets.

The challenge for the UK at the moment is to sort out its own internal deliberations on the future of its trajectory with the EU. New Delhi will assess its own future with the UK in light of the choices London makes with Brussels.

Brexit: A challenge for UK, an opportunity for India

England Women outclassed Indian Women to enter the final of Women's World T20 2018 by registering an easy win against 'Women in Blue' at Antigua's Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

England dominated the game in both the innings and did not give India any hope of getting a breakthrough.

In a shock decision, the Indians excluded their all-time record T20 runscorer Mithali Raj, instead retained the same team which defeated Australia in their final group game in Guyana five days earlier while the strategy failed.

England will meet Australia in the final after the Southern Stars demolished hosts and last edition's winners West Indies by 71 runs.

Batting first, India collapsed to 112 in 19.2 overs with opener Smriti Mandhana scoring 33 off 24 balls.

For England, Kirstie Gordon (2/20), skipper Heather Knight (3/9) and Sophie Ecclestone (2/22) wreaked havoc as seven Indian batters failed to get into double figures on a day when Women In Blue decided to drop their seniormost player Mithali Raj.

While chasing, England coasted along nicely to reach the below-par target in only 17.1 overs.

Women's T20 2018: England thrash India in semi-final

Cameron Smith birdied the 18th to give Australia a share of the lead with England and South Korea on the opening day of the golf World Cup Thursday.

They conquered the Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne with 10-under par 62s in opening fourball action, with Malaysia, Belgium and defending champions Denmark a stroke further back.

The American pairing of Kyle Stanley and Matt Kuchar are four off the pace in a group of seven nations, including France and Japan.

Smith and partner Mark Leishman were among the favourites coming into the US$7 million tournament and they lived up to expectations in blustery conditions, although forecast storms held off.

"I think we just combined really well," Smith said at the 28-team tournament.

"Leish was saying once one of us was in trouble, the other just had to hit the centre of the green and give ourselves a birdie opportunity from 20 or 30 feet. We both played really well all day and just kept being smart."

Nothing would make English Ryder Cup teammates Ian Poulter and Tyrrell Hatton happier than spoiling the Australian party.

It looked like the rival sporting nations would be playing together in the second-round foursomes, but a late charge by the impressive South Korean team of An Byeong-hun and Kim Si-woo vaulted them into a share of the lead.

Australia will instead tee-off on Friday with Malaysian duo Gavin Green and Ben Leong, who combined for two eagles and five birdies.

"It was good team golf really. I think it was just solid all around," said Green.

"The holes I birdied, he didn't birdie, so we always had alternate holes, which we did well on and it is a good thing especially in this format."

England sunk 10 birdies, and Poulter, a team event veteran, said it was crucial to do so in the fourball format to get into a good position.

In fourballs, or better ball, both players have a ball but only the better score counts for each hole. In foursomes, or alternate shot, teammates take it in turns to play the same ball.

"Foursomes (the second and fourth rounds) is a completely different game," Poulter said.

"You need to put the ball in play and if we get blustery weather, it's going to be tricky.

"Foursomes is the day when you can take yourself out of the tournament pretty quickly. The tournament will be won or lost on Friday and Sunday in the foursomes rounds."

Hatton said Poulter saved the team on the back nine, with his putting helping them drop six birdies to come home in 30, two better than the Australians could muster on the homeward stretch.

"It was a frustrating back nine for me. I was pretty disappointed. I was fortunate to have Ian by my side," Hatton said. "He played great today and we are in a great position with three days to go."

Belgium's Thomas Pieters and Thomas Detry matched England's back nine score of 30.

Australia, England, South Korea share lead at golf World Cup

England striker Harry Kane on Sunday led his national team to rally from a one-goal deficit and beat Croatia 2-1, booking a place in the UEFA Nations League finals as the winners of League A Group 4.

The defeat sends 2018 FIFA World Cup runner-up Croatia down to League B, the second tier of the first-ever edition of the new men's tournament while denying Spain a berth in the finals, as La Roja had to settle for the second spot.

England was keen to earn the win and made that clear in the early going, as attacking midfielder Raheem Sterling was set up for a one-on-one situation against Croatia goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic, who made the save.

Shortly after, Kalinic nearly cost his team a goal when he tried to prevent the ball from reaching Kane but exposed his goal instead.

Kane's shot at the wide-open goal was cleared by a Croatia player off the goal line, and then Kalinic, who recovered his position, saved his second attempt on the goal.

Midway through the first half, the momentum shifted as Croatia seized control of the ball, trying to threaten Jordan Pickford's goal, but the game remained scoreless at the half.

On Croatia's first real attempt in the second half, substitute forward Josip Brekalo passed the ball to attacking midfielder Andrej Kramaric, who dribbled around several players inside the area before putting the ball home in the 57th minute.

The Three Lions, however, did not give up as they pushed for a comeback and coach Gareth Southgate sent Jadon Sancho and Jesse Lingard onto the field.

Southgate's changes proved to be decisive as Lingard drew his team level after he was set up for the goal by Kane in the 78th minute.

With four minutes to go before second-half stoppage time, Kane struck his first Nations League goal, sealing the win.

Harry Kane leads England to beat Croatia 2-1, advance to Nations League finals

England's boss Gareth Southgate said that it is becoming very difficult to pick a squad due to the presence of extremely talented players in the team. While he also added that it's a "good sign" for the future of 'The Three Lions' because there is a competition for every single spot.

"Yeah, it's becoming increasingly difficult to pick a squad and increasingly difficult to pick a team and that's a really good sign because we have competition for places," said Southgate.

England will face a winner-takes-all UEFA Nations League clash with Croatia on Sunday (November 18).

It will give some idea of how far the team have come since they lost to the same opponents in the last four in the FIFA World Cup 2018.

"Some young players who've emerged since the summer and even with missing Kieran Trippier and Harry Maguire from the squad in the summer in particular, young players have come through and done well in those positions and in other positions so the only way to avoid complacency and keep driving performances I believe is to have that competition," he added.

World Cup finalists Croatia beat Spain on Thursday (November 15) to blow the Nations League Group A4 wide open, meaning victory for either Croatia or England at Wembley will seal top spot in the standings, and a place in the Nations League finals next year.

The victory will secure progress to next summer's Nations League Finals and a semi-final spot, while the defeated side will be relegated from the top tier after an exciting first edition of the previously derided competition.

A full house will greet the sides for the Group A4 finale, when England have the chance to exact revenge for the extra-time 2-1 defeat to Croatia in July's World Cup semi-final.

Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic will miss the winner-takes-all Nations League game against England at Wembley on Sunday due to injury, manager Zlatko Dalic said on Friday.

Barcelona's Rakitic came off in the 67th minute of the 3-2 home win over Spain on Thursday which gave Croatia the chance to top League A Group 4 and claim a place in next year's four-team finals.

"He will go to Barcelona, it's a serious injury. You know that I usually take no risk. If there is a doubt that the injury could be serious, then we let him rest," Dalic told Sky Sports.

He did not specify the injury but Rakitic left the pitch in Zagreb suffering discomfort in the back of his right thigh.

"We want healthy players and Ivan in this moment is not 100 percent ready. Unfortunately, we are going to play without him."

Rakitic, 30, has played 102 games for Croatia but Dalic said they have players capable of filling in.

"We will see who will replace him. We have (Mateo) Kovacic, we have (Josip) Brekalo, we have (Milan) Badelj," he added.

"There is always a solution and we should stop whining about someone who's not going to be there. We will find a solution and we are going to Wembley to enjoy football."

The winners of Sunday's game will qualify for the Nations League semi-finals with the losers being relegated to League B. A draw would see leaders Spain clinch top spot in Group 4.

Rakitic is suspended for La Liga leaders Barca's next game on Nov. 24 at third-placed Atletico Madrid, who trail by a point, after being sent off in the home defeat by Real Betis on Sunday.

Croatia midfielder Rakitic out of England Nations League game

As England fans said farewell to one of their finest, they also got a glimpse of the future as Gareth Southgate's team beat the United States 3-0 in a Wembley friendly that doubled as Wayne Rooney's tribute game.

Critics of the decision to turn the match into a tribute, and 120th and final cap for Rooney, worried that bringing back a 33-year-old went against Southgate's youth policy.

But with the England manager needing to rotate his squad ahead of the much more important Nations League game against Croatia on Sunday, opportunities were handed to several young players.

Jadon Sancho, the 18-year-old Borussia Dortmund winger, impressed with his light-footed and clever work on the right flank and linked up promisingly with Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard.

"I really did enjoy that, playing in front of my family and in front of the England fans," said Sancho, who moved to Germany in search of playing time having emerged from Manchester City's youth system.

"Playing with Wayne Rooney was a dream come true because obviously, he is a big legend and a role model to me. I was a bit nervous ahead of the game and he came over to me and told me to just express myself because I had nothing to lose," he added.

It was not just Sancho's words that put paid to the fears that Rooney would upset the balance of Southgate's project -- the manager himself noted how Rooney had been a positive influence in the build-up.

"He spoke to them at the end and they would have noticed his humility. He mucked in with the group, trained the same as everyone else, he worked in the five-a-sides and wanted to win everything he was involved in," Southgate said.

"In the game, he was tracking back and he showed what a top player mentality he has," he added.

Southgate highlighted Sancho's decision-making as an area the "raw" winger had to improve on but his awareness for his perfectly-weighted pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold for England's second goal showed real quality.

Alexander-Arnold is England's third choice right back, behind Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier, but the 20-year-old marked his first international at Wembley with his debut goal -- a fine low strike past Brad Guzan.

"A dream come true, first game at Wembley and (first goal) for my country. Jadon Sancho did well to see the vision of me making the run," said the Liverpool defender.

"It's been exciting, looking back on Wayne Rooney's career, he was one of the best players for the country and it was good to share the pitch with him. As a local Liverpool lad, it is good to show people in Liverpool that it is possible."

Football friendly: Wayne Rooney says goodbye as England drub US

All-rounder Ben Stokes stole the show with two brilliant efforts in the field to help England breakthrough Sri Lanka`s resilience with a brace of wickets shortly before lunch on the second day of the second test on Thursday.

Replying to England's first innings total of 285, the hosts reached 139 for four at the break, still trailing by 146 runs, with Dhananjaya de Silva unbeaten on 57 and former captain Angelo Mathews not out on two.

Sri Lanka, trailing 1-0 in the three-test series after last week`s loss in Galle, resumed on 26-1 but lost nightwatchman Malinda Pushpakumara in the third over to a poor shot.

That dismissal brought opener Dimuth Karunaratne and de Silva together, and the duo built a stand of 96 through some smart batting with England`s bowlers looking bereft of ideas as the partnership grew.

Stokes then appeared from nowhere to raise England`s hopes, sprinting from gully when de Silva prodded to the off side, picking the ball up with one hand and completing a run out with one stump to aim at to dismiss Karunaratne for 63.

Stokes was soon in the thick of things once more when he took a sharp one-handed catch at slip to dismiss Kusal Mendis for one off left-arm spinner Jack Leach, who has taken 2-33.

Stokes brilliance helps England peg back Sri Lanka

England won the toss and chose to bat on Wednesday in the second Test against Sri Lanka on what looked to be a good spinners' wicket in Kandy.

All eyes were on Ben Stokes, elevated to number three, in an unchanged team from the first Test thrashing of the hosts in Galle last week.

The in-form Ben Foakes kept his place, despite regular wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow having made a full recovery from an ankle injury.

Sri Lanka, have had to make two changes, bringing in left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara in place of Rangana Herath, who retired following the last Test, while batsman Roshen Silva plays in place of the injured captain Dinesh Chandimal.

Pushpakumara, who is a prolific wicket-taker at the domestic level, plays in a four-man attack that features acting captain and fast bowler Suranga Lakmal, as well as off-spinners Dilruwan Perera and Akila Dananjaya.

England moved Stokes up the order following Moeen Ali's twin failures at number three in Galle.

The visitors are 1-0 up and have the opportunity to wrap up a first series in Sri Lanka since 2001. The third and final Test begins in Colombo on November 23.

England win toss, bat in Sri Lanka second Test

After Ben Stokes failed to justify his promotion to number three and Joe Root's struggle against left-arm spin continued his, England slumped to 120 for four at lunch on the opening day of the second test against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

Jos Buttler was on a belligerent 38 at the break, having earlier hit spinner Akila Dananjaya for three successive boundaries.

Root won the toss and elected to bat, thus sparing his team the tricky prospect of batting fourth on a track already offering turn.

Sri Lanka captain Suranga Lakmal, however, denied them a good start, inducing Keaton Jennings into edging a delivery in the fifth over.

Stokes then survived a review against Dilruwan Perera before he succumbed to another.

Dismissed by a retiring Rangana Herath in both innings of the Galle test, Root fell to his replacement Malinda Pushpakumara for 14.

2nd Test, day 1: England reach 120/4 at lunch

Former England captain Wayne Rooney hopes the country will embrace a culture of honouring its players in the near-future as he shrugged off criticism on Tuesday of his farewell international appearance against the United States.

The 33-year-old striker will earn his 120th and final England cap at Wembley on Thursday, two years after his last appearance, but his return to the international fold has not been without its critics.

England's record-appearance-maker Peter Shilton said caps should not be "given out like gifts", while former Blackburn Rovers and Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes Rooney's inclusion "devalued the international cap".

Rooney, however, told a news conference on Tuesday that the Football Association had decided it was right to honour his England career in this way having spoken to the current players.

"We haven't done anything like this before but I hope in 10 or 15 years' time we are sat here for someone like Harry Kane who could go on and get the goalscoring record," Rooney said.

"It's nice to be back here, turning up and meeting players again. It was nice to see them and the staff, and the reception they gave me was fantastic. Overall it's great to be back."

Rooney, England's all-time record goalscorer, is expected to make an appearance as a substitute in the friendly against the US -- a match arranged to raise funds for the Rooney Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged children.

Rooney's return has already made an impact at the Wembley ticket office, with more than 20,000 tickets sold since his appearance was confirmed earlier this month.

"It's something different. I'm not asking people to agree with it, but it is important that there is money raised for the Wayne Rooney Foundation," he added.

England manager Gareth Southgate said last week he was yet to decide when in the second half Rooney will come on, but added it would be before fans start "heading for the tube".

When asked if he could start the game, Rooney said: "I said to Gareth whatever he wants from me in the game is what I'll try and give him.

"I'm not putting any pressure on him -- I've seen bits which say 'should he be number 10?', 'Should he wear the armband?' I'm not making any demands."

After a season back at Everton, former Manchester United striker Rooney secured a move to the US to join DC United -- whom he helped to the playoffs in his first campaign.

Despite his impressive run in front of goal, Rooney has ruled out a temporary return to the Premier League during the Major League Soccer off-season.

"No, I think I made the decision to obviously go to the States and I intend to stick with that," he said.

"And its important to me to give my full commitment to DC. Obviously I've seen talk of a loan move back here and that's something I'm not prepared to do."

Rooney savours England comeback despite criticism

Tottenham Hotspur full-back Kieran Trippier has withdrawn from the England squad for matches against the United States and Croatia due to a groin injury, the Football Association said on Tuesday.

Trippier, who scored England's only goal in the World Cup semi-final defeat by Croatia, picked up the injury in the first half of Tottenham's 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

The 28-year-old reported for international duty at England's St. George's Park facility on Monday but has been sent back to Spurs to continue rehabilitation.

Former England and Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has announced his retirement from football on Tuesday, bringing the curtain down on a 20-year professional career.

Cole, who turned 37 last week, made 716 appearances and scored 104 goals for seven clubs and completed his career with Tampa Bay Rowdies in the second-tier United Soccer League.

"After 20 years as a professional, the time has come for me to hang up my boots," Cole, who came through West Ham United's youth system, said in a statement. "It has been a dream come true. All of it.

"Whatever is next, I hope the next two decades are as special as my last 20 years as a professional have been."

Cole made his debut at West Ham aged 17 and became club captain four years later, being heralded as one of England's brightest youth prospects due to his excellent dribbling skills and flair.

He joined Chelsea in 2003, one of a number of recruits brought in following the takeover of the club by Russian Roman Abramovich but struggled to impose himself as a starter in his early days at Stamford Bridge.

However, he went on to win every domestic honour at Chelsea, including three Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

On the international stage, Cole was regarded as a member of England's 'golden generation' which included the likes of Frank Lampard, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand.

He scored 10 goals in 56 appearances for the national side between 2001 and 2010, but never quite reached the potential he showed in his youth. Cole was often hindered by injuries throughout his career.

He was selected for the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups, making his final England appearance at the latter tournament in South Africa.

Cole's career after leaving Chelsea in 2010 was limited to short uneventful spells at Liverpool, Lille, West Ham, Aston Villa and Coventry City before moving to the United States.

Having enjoyed a short stint as player-assistant coach at the Rowdies, Cole now wishes to pursue a coaching career in the near-future.

"I want to stay involved in the game. I feel I can offer a lot as a coach and have really enjoyed the opportunity to undertake some of these duties with the Rowdies," he added.

"To lend my experience to help other young footballers achieve their dreams, just like I did, is a big passion of mine."

All of it. "Whatever is next, I hope the next two decades are as special as my last 20 years as a professional have been." Cole made his debut at West Ham aged 17 and became club captain four years later, being heralded as one of England's brightest youth prospects due to his excellent dribbling skills and flair.

England stretched their lead to 250 runs after Keaton Jennings' unbeaten 60 helped them to 111 for three in their second innings at lunch on day three of the opening test against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Jennings and debutant Rory Burns put on 60 for the opening stand but England lost three wickets in quick succession to lose some of their early momentum.

Jennings, who made 46 in the first innings, hit four boundaries in his patient knock. Ben Stokes was on 14 at the other end at the Galle International Stadium.

England had resumed at 38 for no loss with the openers consolidating their position until Burns' pursuit for a non-existent single culminated with his dismissal.

Burns pushed Dilruwan Perera to midwicket and started off but could not beat Dimuth Karunaratne's direct throw and he was dismissed for 23.

Moeen Ali's 4-66 helped England take a 139-run first innings lead but the all-rounder, for the second time in the match, could not justify his promotion to number three.

He followed up his first innings golden duck with three, tamely hitting Perera straight to Rangana Herath at mid-on.

England captain Joe Root also had a deja vu moment when Herath dismissed him for the second time in the match.

Playing his final test, left-arm spinner Herath drew the England captain out and bowled slightly wide to induce an edge that safely nestled into Niroshan Dickwella's gloves.

Root made three to leave his side at 74 for three.

Jennings, looking reasonably comfortable against the Sri Lankan spinners steadied the innings and took a single off Akila Dananjaya to bring up his second fifty.

Pep Guardiola said managing in England is a "dream come true" as he was honoured by the Football Writers' Association fresh from a 6-1 Premier League victory against Southampton.

The Manchester City manager was recognised for his side's Premier League title last season and the club are again setting the pace this season, with nine wins in 11 games.

Speaking at Sunday's ceremony in Manchester, he said: "I'm fortunate to be here in your country, in England.

"It's incredible. It was a dream from a little boy for a young manager to come here to your country and be a manager here. It's a dream come true." City won 32 of their 38 games last season, scoring a record 106 goals and amassing a record 100 points.

"I want to share, of course, this award with the whole Manchester City family because I know it's a real family," said Guardiola.

"I know people say we have a lot of money. That's true but despite that it's incredible the people I'm working with and I'm a lucky guy to be here.

"Thank you so much to make me feel at home in your country here and in Manchester."

The 47-year-old also made light of his outfit for the evening -- the event's dress code was lounge suit and Guardiola accepted the award wearing a casual top.

Pointing to his outfit, he added: "Everyone is so elegant with a suit and tie and I came here with... I am a little bit embarrassed, I'm a disaster. I didn't expect how important this event was."

England's Jonny Bairstow is out of the first Test against Sri Lanka as he recovers after injuring himself playing football, coach Trevor Bayliss said.

The wicketkeeper-batsman hurt his ankle playing football in a training session and missed the last two games of the five-match ODI series, which England won 3-1.

"No, he's not available for this Test match," Bayliss said.

"He has come on a long way in the last week or so but with another winter tour and a big summer we didn't necessarily want to risk it."

Jos Buttler or the uncapped Ben Foakes will take up the wicketkeeping duties for the opening Test of the three-match series starting Tuesday in Galle.

England played three wicketkeepers in their first two-day warm-up game in Colombo with Ollie Pope also rotating with Foakes and Buttler.

"They're both (Buttler and Foakes) still very much in our thinking and that will probably come down to the combination we want to play," said Bayliss.

"Definitely one of them will be keeping but how we structure the batting order and what combination of bowlers we put in to the team could determine who eventually gets the gloves."

The Joe Root-led side is also mulling dropping paceman Stuart Broad to make way for an extra spinner on a turning Galle track that will be Sri Lankan spin legend Rangana Herath's swansong.

"You leave anyone out with the type of bowler he is then well, yeah, it's very difficult," he said.

"If he does miss out on this one there's every opportunity to play the next one, as with anyone who misses out this Test."

Hoddle, who spent the bulk of his playing career with Tottenham Hotspur and also played for Chelsea, Monaco and Swindon Town, works as a pundit for BT Sport and also works for ITV Sport for England games.

BT Sport presenter Mark Pougatch subsequently confirmed that the broadcaster had cancelled its football results show.

"You will understand why there's no BT Sport Score this afternoon. All our thoughts are with Glenn Hoddle and his family," he said on Twitter.

An elegant midfielder Hoddle won 53 caps for his country before managing the team from 1996-1999.

He was celebrating his 61st birthday on Saturday.

As a player - considered by many as one of the most gifted of his generation - Hoddle was best known for a 12-year career at Tottenham, where he played 490 games in all competitions winning both the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup.

He left Spurs in 1987 to play for Monaco and won the French title under then manager Arsene Wenger. He returned to England as the player/manager of first Swindon Town then Chelsea, before retiring in 1995.

David Beckham and ex-Spice Girl Victoria have been married for nearly 20 years and the football and fashion icon admits it has been "hard work" to make it a success.

The pair, who have four children, tied the knot in 1999 and have lived their married life in the public glare.

The former Manchester United star, in Sydney as an ambassador for the Invictus Games for disabled and wounded soldiers, said it was not always easy as he opened up about his private life in an interview with Australian television.

"You know your children - they want your time and they deserve your time, and we are hardworking, and we feel that that is the right way to bring up our children to prove and to show to them that actually, you have to work hard to be successful," he said while speaking to an Australian commercial television network on Sunday.

"To have been married for the amount of time that we have, it's always hard work, everybody knows that, but you make it work, you make difficult situations like travelling away, being away from each other, you make it work."

Now a UNICEF ambassador and owner of an American Major League soccer team, the 43-year-old and his fashion designer wife - who launched her VB label in 2008 in New York - have been fodder for the tabloid press since they met.

But he has learned to live with the constant attention and speculation about their relationship.

"I've grown to kind of ignore some of the negative stuff that's said," he said.

"I think if you know each other, if you know you've got great friends, great family behind you, the thing we have to do is protect our children."

Beckham is close friends with Prince Harry and attended his wedding to the now pregnant Meghan Markle this year.

He said he was a massive fan of the royals and had huge respect for the Duke of Sussex, who conceived the Invictus Games as a way to inspire recovery and rehabilitation from war-time injuries through sport.

"With Harry to have come up with something that changes people's lives is incredible," he said.

"Sport is such a powerful tool to give them the opportunity to get over the injuries and the hard times they have been through."

Fresh claims of spot-fixing hit international cricket in a documentary released Sunday but the ICC refuted the "assertion" that it does not take corruption in the sport seriously and once again questioned the broadcaster's refusal to share the raw footage.

A report on Al Jazeera channel's website stated that "the evidence, from 2011 and 2012, points to a small group of England players allegedly carrying out spot-fixes in seven matches; Australia players in five matches; Pakistan players in three, with players from other teams carrying out spot-fixes in one match.

"As with the first programme we have and will continue to ask for the cooperation of the broadcaster. We have made repeated efforts to engage with the broadcaster as it can play such a crucial part in the full and thorough investigation it has called for," ICC Anti-Corruption GM Alex Marshall said in a statement.

The ICC has been seeking footage of the sting carried out by the channel since it was first aired earlier this year. However, it claims to have got no cooperation from the channel.

"We do welcome the commitment from the broadcaster to share the files with Interpol and, I hope, other law enforcement agencies who can act upon the information and support us in ridding the sport of these criminals," he added.

The channel's report further claimed that the matches in which fixes were allegedly carried out included an England-India encounter at Lord's Cricket Ground, a South Africa-Australia match in Cape Town and several games during England's series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

"The files suggest that the suspected fixes were usually carried out by batsmen who agreed to underperform. Some of the world's most famous players were batting when the fixes allegedly occurred. Many of the matches appear to include multiple fixes, making a total of 26 fixes in the 15 matches," said the report.

The channel claimed that its dossier includes photographs of Mumbai-born Dubai based alleged match-fixer Aneel Munawar and his associates hovering near, and purportedly talking to, international cricket players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Umar Akmal during the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2012.

But the channel made it clear that there is no suggestion that these players were involved in any wrongdoing.

"As you would expect we will again take the contents of the programme and any allegations it may make seriously and will investigate fully.

However, I must refute the assertion that cricket does not take the issue of corruption seriously, we have more resources than ever before working to rid our sport of corruption," Marshall said.

"The investigation into these allegations has already commenced and will run alongside a number of other live unrelated investigations.

When considering the claims, we will work with professional independent betting analysts."

Sri Lanka's left-arm bowler Rangana Herath is retiring earlier than expected and will bid farewell after next month's opening Test against England in Galle, the cricket board announced Monday.

Herath, 40, was expected to bow out at the conclusion of England's three-Test tour, but he will now call it quits from international cricket at the same ground where he made his Test debut against Australia in 1999.

"We respect and support Rangana's decision even though his retirement will be a big loss for Sri Lanka Cricket," the Sri Lankan board said.

"We wish to thank him for the invaluable contribution he has made." Herath has played 92 Tests, taking 430 wickets -- making him Sri Lanka's second most prolific bowler behind Muttiah Muralitharan, who holds the all-time world record of 800.

His last ODI appearance was in Wellington against England in March 2015. The first Test against England starts on November 6.

Rangana Herath to retire after first Test against England

Thunder, lightning and torrential rain halted England on their Sri Lanka tour Saturday, but they wrapped up the one-day series against their hosts with a faster run rate.

After Dasun Shanaka hit a boundary-smattered 66 to help Sri Lanka make 273-7 from their 50 overs, Jason Roy made 45 and England pair Joe Root and captain Eoin Morgan were just shifting up a gear in the chase when dark clouds gathered over Kandy.

With England on 132-2 from 27 overs, Root (32) and Morgan (31) seemed well placed to put their side on the route to victory. They already led the series 2-0 going into the fourth of the five games.

As with the other wins, the decision came with the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern run rate system, and England were awarded victory by 18 runs. Every game in the series has now been halted or interrupted by rain.

While frustrated, Morgan will be satisfied with the show from his team in difficult circumstances.

Roy closed in on a half century which included a six and five fours when an Akila Dananjaya leg spin hit his pad as he came down the wicket. The umpire did not give him out -- but Sri Lanka demanded a review, which proved their shouting was justified.

Morgan himself was shunting ahead with a six and three fours in 34 balls when the deluge started.

Earlier, Shanaka led another starring role for Sri Lanka's middle order after England won the toss and made the home side bat at the Pallekele stadium.

Opener Niroshan Dickwella's 52 was the only resistance shown by Sri Lanka's leading batsmen.

Shanaka made five sixes and four fours in his highest 50-over score, which kept Sri Lanka in a game they had to win to hold out any hope of avoiding another series defeat.

Moeen Ali was England's most effective bowler, taking two for 55 as the tourists used a mixture of spin and pace to maintain pressure.

Dickwella steadied the Sri Lanka innings, putting on 60 for the second wicket, with captain Dinesh Chandimal (30) after Sadeera Samaawickrama fell for one.

Thisara Perera (44) and Dananjaya (32 not out) put on 56 for the seventh wicket to give a late boost to the score.

The final one-day game is in Colombo on Tuesday while the two play a 20 over challenge next Saturday. They will play three Tests in November.

Banned Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria Thursday said he finally confessed to spot-fixing after years of denial to get closure for his mistakes and sought forgiveness from the country's "shocked" cricket community.

"I just want the cricket board, my fans and the Pakistani people to understand my situation and forgive me. I made a grave mistake in associating with a bookmaker(Anu Bhatt) and not reporting it to the concerned authorities and I have paid the price for it," Kaneria told PTI.

"I am gutted at the moment because it is not easy to come out like this after basically lying for six years. I had to do it now because it was a burden on me and I just couldn't take the stigma of being called a spot-fixer any longer and denying it," Kaneria said.

Kaneria, who will turn 38 in December and who took 261 wickets in 61 Tests, said he wanted to rebuild his life and hoped the cricket authorities would accept his apology and show compassion.

"What I did was very wrong...I hope the people forgive me," he said.

"My accounts have been checked in this case and they can be checked again. My mistake was getting close to this guy, (alleged match-fixer) Anu Bhatt who became like a family friend to us after he came to Pakistan and we went to India in 2005/06. He virtually started blackmailing me," he added.

Kaneria is serving a life ban since 2012 for indulging in spot-fixing in English county matches. The ban was imposed on him by the English Cricket Board.

"I can give back to the game by telling all young players don't get involved in these things and stay away from people like Anu Bhatt," he asserted.

But Pakistan's cricket community was left "shocked and betrayed".

"I am gutted because in the early days when Danish's case came up. I met with the Pakistan Cricket Board officials with his case documents to convince them that he (Kaneria) should be heard by the PCB. I believed he was innocent," Pakistan's former Test captain Rashid Latif said.

Latif said Kaneria's confession was a big let-down for the Pakistan cricket community.

"...You can't help feel being betrayed by him," Latif said.

Former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir said Kaneria's confession was a big blow to the image of Pakistan cricket.

"God knows what these players think about. We get publicity for all the wrong reasons, spot-fixing and doping cases. I am really sad today to hear about Kaneria's confession after he lied to all of us for six years," Qadir said.

Former Test opener, chief selector and national team coach Mohsin Khan said he felt let down but was also sympathetic.

"But I also think Kaneria has done the right thing now even after six years. I think his conscience was bothering him. He is already serving a life ban since 2012.

"Perhaps the authorities can talk to him and try to reduce his ban because worst has happened in Pakistan cricket," he said.

The ECB banned the leg-spinner for life and also sent his Essex teammate, Mervyn Westfield to jail for his involvement in the matter.

Kaneria played his last Test on the tour of England in 2010 after which the PCB withdrew him from the squad when it was reported that the English Cricket Board was investigating the leg-spinner for fixing in county matches.

It was on the 2010 tour of England that Pakistan's then captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Aamir were also found involved in spot-fixing and later banned for five-years each.

The trio completed there bans in 2016 and are back playing cricket. While Aamir has made a comeback to the Pakistan team, Butt and Asif are playing regular domestic cricket.

Last year the PCB also launched an investigation into spot-fixing in the Pakistan Super League and as a result of the inquiries, batsmen, Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Shahzaib Hasan and Nasir Jamshed were banned for differing periods.

Spain still lead the group with six points after three games, while Gareth Southgate's side are second on four, leaving Croatia bottom with one point although the World Cup runners-up have a game in hand.
