England stunned Spain to claim their first UEFA Nations League victory in Seville, last night.

A superb first-half showing from England produced two goals from Raheem Sterling to deliver one of their finest victory in the modern era.

The Three Lions became the first team to put three goals past Spain in a competitive home international and won in the country for the first time since 1987.

Marcus Rashford was the other scorer in a breathless opening 45 minutes, which witnessed Spain conceding three on home soil for the first time in their history.

Praising his side for putting up a spectacular show, Gareth Southgate said England showed quality and were brave.

"The quality of the performance - we played with courage and used the ball with courage. If you come and defend for 90 minutes they will unlock you.

"We really showed some quality and a good mentality to play out of their pressing. Spain the side are very aggressive in the way they press. All our players, right through the team, were brave enough to play the way we wanted to play," he continued to add.

"It's fine to have an idea of how you want to play but to do it is a huge credit to them," he concluded.

UEFA Nations League: Southgate's 'Three Lions' led by Raheem, Rashford stun Spain

England wasted several gilt-edged chances as they were held to a 0-0 draw away to World Cup runners-up Croatia in a Nations League top-tier Group 4 clash behind closed doors on Friday.

Eric Dier and Harry Kane headed against the woodwork for the visitors while Marcus Rashford spurned two clear opportunities as England missed out on a first win in the new competition.

The result inside the near-deserted stadium left both sides with one point from two games behind runaway leaders Spain, who have six points and host England in Seville on Monday.

England manager Gareth Southgate was disappointed with the outcome, saying: "Second half we were by far the better team and if we had taken our chances we would have won the game.

"There would be more concern if we weren’t creating chances. We showed good endeavour and creative play. We have to keep getting in those situations."

Without any fans present as Croatia served the second game of a crowd ban for racist offences by their fans in Euro 2016 qualifying, the instructions from both benches echoed around the eerily empty ground in a tepid first half at the Rijeka stadium.

Midfielder Dier reflected on the first match England had ever played behind closed doors, although he noted the presence of a handful of England fans on a hill overlooking the ground.

"It was strange, the first experience of it for all of us," Dier told Sky Sports. "A couple of fans got up on the hill but once the game started it was in the back of our minds. We could easily hear the ones on the hill, they were the only ones here."

Revenge Mission

The game was built up by some English media as a chance for the visitors to avenge Croatia's 2-1 World Cup semi-final win in Russia in July but the game failed to produce any fireworks.

The only chance in the first half fell to Dier, who glanced his header against the far post after a Jordan Henderson corner.

Chants of 'God Save the Queen' from England supporters who had gathered outside the ground seemed to lift Gareth Southgate's side after the break but the woodwork and some dreadful finishing by Rashford denied them a goal.

Kane headed a Henderson free-kick against the bar before Manchester United forward Rashford served up a pair of astonishing misses in the space of two minutes.

He scuffed a feeble shot at Dominik Livakovic from eight metres when clear on goal and the keeper then denied him again with a superb reflex save from an almost identical position.

Croatia's Ivan Perisic forced a good save from Jordan Pickford with a stinging low shot and Ante Rebic, playing in an unfamiliar lone striker role, fired inches wide with a long-range effort for the revamped home side.

England's Jadon Sancho, Borussia Dortmund's exciting 18-year old winger, produced a darting run late on after coming off the bench to replace Raheem Sterling and make his international debut before the match fizzled out in the final few minutes.

Sancho became the second youngest England player to win his first cap in a competitive game, behind Manchester United's Duncan Edwards who died at the age of 21 as a result of the injuries he suffered in the Munich air crash of 1958.

Croatia hold wasteful England in empty stadium

England defender Kieran Trippier on Wednesday said the team will not be out for revenge for their World Cup semi-final defeat when they face Croatia in the Nations League on Friday.

In the 2018 World Cup, England enjoyed their best World Cup performance in 28 years. They, however, missed out on a spot in the final after losing to Croatia after extra time.

"No, it's not revenge. Croatia were good on the day against us in the World Cup semi-final but it's another game," Trippier told Sky Sports. "We want to go there get the win, get the points we need and then look forward to Spain."

The clash between the two teams will be played behind closed doors as UEFA have punished Croatia after a Nazi symbol was marked on their pitch ahead of a Euro 2016 qualifier.

England not on revenge mission in Croatia, says Kieran Trippier

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has only been in the Premier League for two months, but his impact has been such that he is now being tipped as a missing creative link in Gareth Southgate's England side.

After a 22 million pounds ($29 million) close-season move from Championship (second tier) Norwich City, Maddison has played all eight games in the Premier League and the number 10 is now in line to face Croatia and Spain in England's Nations League matches.

The 21-year-old is unlikely to be overawed.

His Premier League debut came at Old Trafford against Manchester United on the televised opening Friday of the season and he left observers purring at his classy display despite Leicester falling to a 2-1 defeat.

"There was a moment in the warm-up when the crowd was filling up and it just hit me that this was the Premier League. You see all these TV cameras around the pitch, which you don't get at Championship level, and I thought: 'I've worked hard to be here. I deserve to be here. I belong here'," he told reporters.

"I did well on the day and we put in a good performance and maybe could have got more out of the game. There is no bigger stage than Old Trafford on the opening day of the season or Friday night. That was a dream I will never forget," he said.

There was certainly no sign of nerves as he showed his creativity and invention up against United`s World Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba.

It was a display that immediately suggested he could be the missing link for Southgate in the role between midfield and attack, where England are not blessed with an abundance of creative talents.

"I always had the confidence," he said. "I went into pre-season with the mind-set of 'Be fearless, go and show everyone what you can do'.

"If, just because it's the Premier League, I started trying to play the simple pass instead of trying the harder pass that is not the type of person I am to be honest.

"I went in with an open mind and it has worked out well. I`m really enjoying it and loving life in the Premier League," he added.

While he acknowledges that he is a new face in the England set-up, the midfielder will not be a shrinking violet.

"You have to come here and be yourself," he said. "If you come here and act like the new kid or the young lad then I don`t think it will work. Gareth (Southgate) said to me: 'Go and show what you are about and why you are here'.

"I've always believed in myself. One of my biggest attributes, if you speak to my coaches from when I was a young lad, is that I've always believed in my own ability and been a confident young man.

"There's never been a point when I've questioned myself. If I've ever had a setback at a club I've always made it my mission to show why I should be in the team instead of dwelling on it."

Maddison says he is at the right club for a player looking to break into the England team, with Leicester centre back Harry Maguire and left back Ben Chilwell also in Southgate's squad.

That was a factor, he said, behind his move from Norwich.

"We have a really good English spine at Leicester at the minute," he said.

"I looked at the Leicester squad and saw Harry and Jamie (Vardy) as regulars in England set up, I thought that is where I want to be, that is where I want to get to.

"I was a little bit off it at the time but (I thought) that is eventually where I want to be, alongside those guys and here we are. So I am very happy with the decision I made. It is going very well."

James Maddison's instant impact earns him England chance

Centurion Prithvi Shaw, who batted like one not appearing in his maiden Test, Thursday said he was also well prepared to play his first international game against a better attack in testing English conditions.

Teenage sensation Shaw was named in India's squad for the final two Tests in England but did not get to make his debut in a series which the visitors lost 1-4.

He made a dream debut against the West Indies in the series opener, scoring a sublime 134 and, at 18 years and 329 days, becoming the youngestIndian to reach three figures in his maiden appearance.

"It was captain and coach's decision (of when to give me a game). I was ready in England as well but finally got the opportunity here," said the soft-spoken youngster after stumps on day one.

"But it I was a great experience in England. They made feel really comfortable. Virat bhai told me there is no senior or junior in the team. It was nice sharing the dressing room with players who have played international cricket for more than five years. Everyone is a friend now."

He was expectedly nervous before the game but getting to spend time with his senior teammates during the England series helped him approach his debut like "any other game".

His first runs came off his typical back-foot punch and he never looked back from there, playing a top-quality innings comprising 19 fours.

"I was nervous at the start but settled down after I timed a few nicely. After that, I didn't feel the pressure that I felt at the start of the innings. I like to dominate bowlers and that is what I was trying to do, waiting for the loose balls," he said.

Having scored a hundred on Ranji and Duleep Trophy debut, Shaw did the same at the highest level. When asked, Shaw was modest about rising to the occasion timing and again.

"I don't know how I manage but whenever go in the middle, I try to play to the merit of the ball and even in this game I went in with the same mindset. I did not try anything new thinking it is my first Test. Played the same way I have played India A and domestic cricket.

"Having said that, there is a lot of difference if you compare international cricket with the U-19 and domestic cricket. They come with a lot of strategies in international cricket. You face bowlers with a lot more pace. Sometimes you face serious pace in domestic cricket but here is a lot more variety and experience," said Shaw who looked comfortable against Shanon Gabriel even though he was touching 150kph.

The year could not have turned out better for Shaw, who led India to the U-19 World Cup title in New Zealand, made his IPL debut before finally getting his big break on Thursday. He dedicated the hundred to his father, who raised him as a single parent after his mother passed way when he was just four.

"I never thought of making my India debut right after the U-19 win. I took it match by match. It finally happened today. I dedicate this innings to my father.

He has made a lot of sacrifice for me. I cannot even describe it now.

"I was thinking about my dad, as he has sacrificed a lot for me. Whenever I scored a hundred I thought of him and this is my first Test hundred, it's all for him."

When asked what his father said to him before the game, Shaw added: "He doesn't know that much about cricket. He just said 'go and enjoy your debut'. Play like another game."

Australia made a stuttering start to coach Justin Langer's tenure as they lost by three wickets to England in the opening match of the one-day series at The Oval on Wednesday.

Only Glenn Maxwell impressed as Australia batted first, scoring 62 as the touring side lost regular wickets and were bowled out for a mediocre 214 in the 47th over.

England, humbled by Scotland on Sunday, made a meal of reaching the low target, however, and when top scorer Eoin Morgan (69), Jos Buttler and Joe Root (50) fell in the space of three overs the hosts were wobbling on 163 for six.

David Willey eased England home, finishing the match off with a booming six.

Sheets of sandpaper with "4" and "6" printed on them were handed out on the approaches to the Oval -- a reminder of the ball-tampering scandal that engulfed Australian cricket this year and cost Steve Smith the captaincy.

Coach Darren Lehmann stood down after the test series in South Africa and Langer's new-look Australian batting line-up made an inauspicious start.

Travis Head chased a wide outswinger from Willey and edged to Jonny Bairstow for a routine slip catch and Aaron Finch struck a couple of boundaries before a rash drive at Moeen Ali sent an easy catch to backward point.

Shaun Marsh looked in good nick for his 24 before Moeen got one past his outside edge, the ball striking the top of off stump to leave Australia on 52 for three.

Captain Tim Paine's rash reverse sweep off Moeen went straight to Mark Wood at backward point for 12.

Australia tried to raise the tempo and Marcus Stoinis lofted a six off of Adil Rashid only to nudge one behind to keeper Jos Buttler having scored 22.

Maxwell, who struck a 52-ball half century, shared an 84-run stand with Ashton Agar for the sixth wicket to raise Australian hopes of a challenging total.

But Maxwell top-edged Liam Plunkett to deep square leg where Bairstow took the simplest of catches and Agar was plumb lbw to Rashid before Plunkett and Wood mopped up the tail.

Billy Stanlake bowled Jason Roy for a duck in England's reply and when Bairstow was caught on the boundary England were 38 for three.

Morgan and Root put England in total control before the hosts stumbled over the line.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has backed England to shine at the World Cup due to the depth of experience in the squad.

"They have a good group of young but experienced players," Mourinho told British media.

"All of them play in the most competitive competition in the world, the Premier League, all of them playing for the best teams with experience of playing in the Champions League, which is a high level of football, obviously."

Mourinho said favourites Brazil and Germany had the most balanced squads and he did not expect the World Cup to see a shock winner in Russia.

"They have good squads but good squads don't always make good teams... (but) I don't think the underdogs will make a big surprise," he added. "In the end, the top teams in South America and Europe are the ones that will be fighting for the title."

In fact, he was the most prolific scorer for the franchise after Jos Buttler played an integral part in helping the team get into the knockouts this season.

Scotland's shock one-day international win over England has boosted their chances of securing test-playing status, the country's cricket board has said.

Scotland registered their first victory over their neighbours at Edinburgh on Sunday, bowling England out for 365 after posting their highest score of 371 for five.

"I can see us getting there in the next couple of years," Tony Brian, chairman of Cricket Scotland, told the BBC.

"We're so close to our goal of full member status now"

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has 12 full members, with Ireland and Afghanistan promoted in June last year.

The ICC has reduced the number of teams at the 2019 World Cup to 10 from 14, making it far more difficult for associate nations to qualify.

"The ICC set strict criteria for us to meet for full member status and we're only two away," Brian added. "We probably need one more win against a top nation and our women's team, who are also rapidly improving, need to do well at a World Cup qualifier."

Scotland hope ODI win over England boosts test status hopes

Scotland enjoyed the greatest victory in their cricket history by holding their nerve to beat world number one-ranked England by six runs in a thrilling one-day international at Edinburgh on Sunday.

Despite making a mammoth 371 for five, thanks mainly to Calum MacLeod's brilliant 140 not out, Scotland were in danger of defeat as England's Jonny Bairstow took advantage of a good pitch and short boundaries at the Grange to make 105.

But a middle-order collapse gave non-Test nation Scotland renewed hope.

England rallied again, thanks to a 71-run eighth-wicket partnership between Moeen Ali and Liam Plunkett.

But paceman Safyaan Sharif sealed Scotland's victory with seven balls to spare when he had No.11 Mark Wood plumb lbw to spark a pitch invasion by jubilant home fans.

Scotland's first win in international cricket over England came in their first match since they were cruelly denied a place at next year's World Cup after a poor umpiring decision and rain saw them miss out in their final qualifier against the West Indies in Harare in March.&nbsp

"I'm lost for words, I don't know what to say," Sharif told Sky Sports. "We've been waiting for this for so long. England are a brilliant side but scoring 371 against them means the world."

The International Cricket Council's decision to shrink the World Cup from 14 teams to 10 had already been heavily criticised long before Scotland and their fellow associate or non-Test nations impressed with the quality of their play in Zimbabwe.

Asked if Scotland had sent a message to the ICC with this win, Sharif replied: "I'm not going to say anything -- they've seen it all today."

'Not the end of the world'

This was an embarrassing reverse for 2019 World Cup hosts England ahead of their upcoming five-match home ODI series against Australia and a reminder of how Eoin Morgan's side have been undone in one-off games, such as last year's Champions Trophy semi-final loss to eventual winners Pakistan in Cardiff.&nbsp

"(Scotland) are a very dangerous side, I thought they played close to their best cricket today and we didn't," said Morgan

"It's not the end of the world for us, it was a really good run out and good to have a practice coming into the series against Australia," he added ahead of a five-match campaign that gets underway at The Oval on Wednesday.

Scotland's total was their highest at this level, surpassing their 341 for nine against fellow non-Test nation Canada at Christchurch four years ago.

Bairstow set a record by becoming the first England batsman to make three ODI centuries in successive innings but it was not enough to deny the Scots.

Scotland saw captain Kyle Coetzer and Matthew Cross share a century stand after Morgan won the toss.

But they lost both openers in quick succession to be 107 for two.

MacLeod, however, ensured a promising start was not wasted and together with George Munsey (55) put on 107 for the fourth wicket.

The 29-year-old former Durham batsman went to a hundred off just 70 balls, his seventh at this level and the first by any Scotland batsman against England.

Jason Roy and Bairstow launched England's reply with a century stand but Bairstow holed out when he might have won the game.

Test skipper Joe Root was carelessly run out and England then lost Morgan and Alex Hales off successive deliveries to be 245 for five.

Ali's 46 threatened to spare England's blushes only for the all-rounder to be undone by a slower delivery from left-arm spinner Mark Watt.

The victory completed a notable double over England for the Sole family.

David Sole, the captain of the Scotland rugby union side that beat England at Edinburgh's Murrayfield in 1990 to win a Grand Slam in the old Five Nations, was among the Grange crowd to watch his son Chris, one of Scotland's new-ball bowlers.

Mike Hesson stunned New Zealand cricket on Thursday by announcing he will step down as coach at the end of next month, less than a year out from the World Cup.

The 43-year-old, who was appointed to the role in 2012, is to leave the job on July 31.

He said in a statement he wanted to spend more time with his family and felt he could not commit to the job for another 12 months.

"This job requires 100 per cent commitment and is all-consuming," Hesson said. "I know what's required over the next 12 months, but if I'm honest, I don't feel I have the capacity to give the job what it deserves.

"The idea of missing a match, a tour or a format, as has been proposed at different times, has never sat well with me."

Hesson, who was a surprise choice for the role in 2012, had a rocky start when he dumped Ross Taylor as captain but turned the team around, guiding them to the 2015 World Cup final and the world's top ranking in Twenty20 cricket.

New Zealand was also ranked as high as second for one-day internationals and third for tests during his tenure, which would have officially ended after the May 30-July 14 World Cup in England and Wales next year.

NZC Chief Executive David White said in a statement he was reluctant to see Hesson leave.

Despite his heroics with the bat, a lot of cricket fans weren't actually talking about his successful innings as he is running the risk of action by ICC

Buttler's 'rude message' on bat during Pakistan Test triggers controversy

England's Jos Butler recalls his IPL stint saying that it gave him confidence and helped him return to his form, which could be seen in his recent performance in test series.

Reminiscing Rajasthan's opening batsman red-hot form in recent IPL series, he knocked 548 runs overall with unbeaten 95 his highest.

Buttler was dropped from England's test side at the end of 2016 following a poor run of form but his consistency in limited-overs cricket, along with his high-flying IPL run, earned the 27-year-old a surprise test recall last month.

He stated, "I started to think too much about how to not get out, as opposed to how to score runs. I got in a really bad rut that I just couldn't get out of. The only real way to get out of it was to be dropped. And actually, being dropped released a lot of pressure. It wasn't very long after that that I made an ODI hundred in Dubai, which was a turnaround for me after a long and hard six months."

"Those couple of weeks in the IPL gave me huge amounts of confidence, playing in front of those crowds, the pressure of being an overseas player," Buttler told British media.

"The tough thing with test cricket is that if you get out early, you've got a long time to think about it. In T20, you just move on."

England hammer Pakistan to win 2nd Test by an innings; draw the two-match series

England reduced Pakistan to 68 for the loss of four wickets at lunch on the opening day of the second and final Test on Friday.&nbsp

Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes took two wickets each as changed their strategy for the game and bowled full-lengths. In a terrific opening spell, Broad removed Imam-ul-Haq (0), who edged to Joe Root at third slip, and Azhar Ali (2), who was trapped lbw, to leave Pakistan 17-2.

Woakes was the first change after 14 penetrating overs from Broad and James Anderson, and the recalled allrounder enticed edges from Haris Sohail (28) and Asad Shafiq (27) to the slip cordon.

Having won the toss, Pakistan was struggling to deal with England's swing movement under grey skies.&nbspDebutant Usman Salahuddin, in for injured batsman Babar Azam, was 3 not out and Sarfraz Ahmed was unbeaten on 6.

Broad had figures of 2-23 off nine overs, while Woakes had 2-17 off six overs.

Needing a victory to avoid a third straight series loss, England was without star all-rounder Ben Stokes because of a hamstring injury sustained in training on Wednesday.&nbsp

Sam Curran, a 19-year-old left-arm swing bowler, earned his first cap as a replacement.

England's players have talked about the potential for racist abuse from spectators at the World Cup finals in Russia, defender Ashley Young has said.

Russia has pledged to crack down on racism as the country faces increased scrutiny ahead of the World Cup, which it will host from June 14 to July 15 in 11 cities.

FIFA fined Russia 30,000 Swiss francs ($30,232.79) earlier this month for discriminatory chants by fans after racist abuse was directed at French players during a friendly in St Petersburg in March.

"I'm sure we'll talk about it and we have talked about it, in the squad, in what to do and what not to do," Young told British media.

"Hopefully FIFA, if anything is to come about, will be able to deal with it. Whether it's going to happen, whether you are on the pitch, I'm not sure how you react to it."

England has been drawn in Group G at the World Cup and play their first match against Tunisia in Volgograd on June 18.

Cricket Australia has released a statement in the wake of match-fixing allegations in several matches involving India, Sri Lanka, Australia and England last year.

According to the sting operation done by Al Jazeera television network, the match might have been played on a pitch doctored at the behest of match-fixers. The incident prompted the ICC to launch an investigation into the matter and said they were aware of the allegations.

Now, Cricket Australia has said it wasn't aware of any "credible evidence" linking two of its players to match-fixing.

CA chief James Sutherland urged the Qatari broadcaster to hand over its footage to the International Cricket Council following Sunday's documentary and pledged a full investigation if necessary.

"Although not having been provided an opportunity to view the documentary or any raw footage, our long-standing position on these matters is that credible claims will be treated very seriously and fully investigated," Sutherland said in a statement.

"Cricket Australia will continue to fully cooperate with the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit in its review of the matter. Neither the ICC or Cricket Australia is aware of any credible evidence linking Australian players to corruption in the game."

Sutherland also said, "Cricket Australia will continue to fully co-operate with the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit in its review of the matter."

He also urged Al Jazeera to provide all un-edited materials and any other evidence to the ICC investigation team so that a full and thorough investigation can be conducted.

The Al Jazeera programme claimed pitches were doctored to achieve desired results at Galle International Stadium, where Australia lost all their 20 wickets and were beaten by Sri Lanka inside three days in 2016.

They also made match-fixing allegations against England in their innings defeat to India in Chennai, which England captain Joe Root described as "outrageous".

The documentary made reference to the 2016 Test between Australia and Sri Lanka, where it claimed criminals had placed money on the game not ending in a draw, before it was wrapped up on the third day.

The names of the Australian players were bleeped out by Al Jazeera and the period of play under suspicion was also not revealed.

Pakistan cricket team were fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their nine-wicket win over England in the opening Test of the two-match series at the Lord's on Sunday.

The fine was imposed after the Sarfraz Ahmed-led side was ruled to be three overs short of their target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

Sarfraz has been fined 60 per cent of his match fee, while his players have received 30 per cent fines.

If Pakistan commits another minor over-rate breach in a Test within 12 months of this offence with Sarfraz as captain, it will be deemed a second offence by Sarfraz and he will face a suspension.

Sarfraz pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and fourth umpire Rob Bailey.&nbsp

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday instructed Pakistan cricketers to stop wearing smart watches while playing. &nbsp

The issue came to light when Asad Shafiz and Babar Azam were seen wearing smart watches during the opening day's play of the first Test against England at Lord's on Thursday.&nbsp

As per reports, there was no suggestion of wrongdoing, but the council instructed the Pakistan team against wearing such watches as an anti-corruption measure.&nbsp

Pakistan ended the first day of this two-match series well-placed at 50 for one after bowling England out for just 184.

"I didn't know earlier that anyone was wearing one (a smart watch)," Pakistan's Hasan Ali, said after the end of Day 1.&nbsp

"But yes, an ICC anti-corruption officer came to us and told us this is not allowed. So next time nobody will wear them," he added.

In a bid to combat financial malpractice in cricket, players and match officials must hand over their mobile phones and other devices capable of electronic transmission before play to the appointed ICC anti-corruption officer present at every major international match.

The devices are returned after stumps.

Lord's was the venue where three Pakistan players, including Mohammad Amir, who is playing in this match, were involved in a spot-fixing scandal during a 2010 Test against England.

The English court sentenced Amir, fellow pace bowler Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt, Pakistan's captain in that match, to jail terms, with the trio also given five-year worldwide ban from cricket by the ICC. &nbsp

Former Test captain Alastair Cook played a superb knock and smashed a gritty 70 as England were165 for five at tea on the first day of the opening test against Pakistan at Lord's on Thursday.

Playing in a record-equalling 153rd consecutive test, Cook batted fluently. But wickets tumbled around him after England captain Joe Root had won the toss in overcast conditions at the home of cricket.

Mark Stoneman, Root and Dawid Malan fell cheaply to the Pakistan seamers in the morning, leaving England struggling at 43 for three before Cook and Jonny Bairstow steadied the innings with a partnership of 57.

Faheem Ashraf and Cook's three-hour vigil ended when Mohammad Amir produced an excellent ball that clipped his off stump.

Ben Stokes unfurled a few trademark attacking strokes to reach 36 not out at the tea interval with Jos Buttler on 13, but England have plenty of work to do as they look to move on from a heavy Ashes defeat in Australia and a rare loss to New Zealand.

Pakistan had dominated the first session of the two-match series.

Root, who could have been run out before he had scored, played carefully to get to four before driving rashly at a wide ball from Hasan Ali and nicking a catch to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

But Cook's hopes of a 33rd test century ended when he failed to get fully forward to a good-length delivery from Amir, leaving the left-hander to trudge slowly back to the pavilion to a standing ovation.&nbsp

BCCI to curtail Virat Kohli's county stint after reports of injury

England batsman Jos Buttler has vowed not to curb his attacking instincts after earning a "surprise" recall to the Test team for the opening Test against Pakistan starting at Lord's on Thursday.

Buttler returns to the Test fold for the first time since December 2016 after a series of impressive innings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and he believes a similar bold approach in red-ball cricket can help cement his place in the side.

"They've told me to play in the way people watch me play in white-ball games," Buttler, a wicketkeeper selected as a specialist batsman for the Pakistan Test, told a news conference on Monday.

"I'm not just going to go out there trying to slog, but I'm going to try to be positive and score runs."

Buttler's time away from the Test arena has seen him forge a reputation as an effective limited-overs player and he recently struck an IPL record-equalling five consecutive half-centuries for the Rajasthan.

Buttler's move to opener for the Royals prompted his run of good scores but the 27-year-old is likely to slot into England's middle order at number seven.

"That's what the game is about, whatever fashion you do that in," Buttler, who has played 18 Tests so far with an average of 31.36, added.

"There have been some great cricketers from all generations who've done it their own way.

Buttler's move to opener for the Royals prompted his run of good scores but the 27-year-old is likely to slot into England's middle order at number seven

"I'm not just going to go out there trying to slog, but I'm going to try to be positive and score runs." Buttler's time away from the Test arena has seen him forge a reputation as an effective limited-overs player and he recently struck an IPL record-equalling five consecutive half-centuries for the Rajasthan. That's what's been asked of me really, to play in a way that suits me." England will play two Tests against Pakistan, with the second match at Headingley starting on June 1.

Jos Buttler to maintain attacking approach in Pakistan Test

Antonio Conte has warned Chelsea he will never change his demanding ways as the FA Cup winning boss waits to discover if he will be sacked.

Conte ended a troubled season on a high note thanks to Chelsea's 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Saturday's final at Wembley.

Eden Hazard's first half penalty was followed by a backs to the wall display as Conte won the second trophy of his two-year reign in what may prove his final game in charge.

Whether FA Cup glory will be enough to convince Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich not to sack Conte remains in doubt after the Blues finished fifth in the Premier League and missed out on Champions League qualification.

The Italian has been embroiled in a turbulent campaign marred by his feud with the club's hierarchy over their failure to back his transfer plans following last season's Premier League title triumph.

Conte is also said to have infuriated several Chelsea stars with his intense personality and regimented training sessions.

But the former Juventus and Italy coach is adamant his managerial style has made him a "serial winner" who should be respected.

In a clear warning that he will never stop pushing his players or demanding boardroom backing, Conte emerged from the jubilant Chelsea dressing room to send a defiant message to his club.

Still soaked in champagne from the post-match celebrations, Conte said: "After two years the club knows me very well. If they want to continue to work with me, they know me.&nbsp

"I can't change. My way is always the same hard work and to build a strong mentality with my players.

"I can't change. I'm this and I think my past speaks very clear as a player and as a manager.&nbsp

"You can say what you want, but I'm a serial winner.

"I showed this in England in a difficult moment for the club. I've showed this today, because we found the right way to win this trophy.

"There are moments that you have a lot of questions for yourself. To win in this way this season gives me more satisfaction than my wins in the past."

'We must be honest'
Conte, who won three Serie A titles with Juventus, has one year left on his contract after signing an improved deal without an extension at the end of last season.

But the 48-year-old has given the impression for much of the season that he would have no problem leaving Stamford Bridge because he knows he would still be in demand from top clubs.

Asked if he expects to be in charge next season, Conte said he would respect whatever decision was taken.

"I always say I'm committed to this club, to respect my contract," he said.

"As you know very well our job is not simple. I understand that the club can make a decision, a positive decision, a negative decision. I'm the first to understand.

"I'm the coach of a great, important club. It's right that the club demands of me a lot. For sure we'll make the best decision."

In truth, Conte may have burned too many bridges to stay with Chelsea amid speculation that former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique and Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri are Abramovich's top targets to succeed him.

In another swipe at Chelsea's refusal to sign his top targets last year, he added: "As you know very well I predicted the difficulty at the start of the season.

"To miss a place in the Champions League is not good for a club like Chelsea.

"We must be honest to tell this. But at the same time you have to know the real situation.

"There is the possibility with this group of players we did the maximum."

If Conte does leave, it will be despite the support of Chelsea's fans, who serenaded him as he joined in the celebrations on the Wembley turf.

"After these two seasons I will always love this colour, these fans, this club. Even if my future must be in a different way," he said.

U.S. actress Meghan Markle confirmed on Thursday her father would not be attending her wedding to Britain`s Prince Harry, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth, putting an end to days of speculation.

Markle`s father, Thomas, had been due to walk his daughter down the aisle at the glittering ceremony at St George`s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday.

But the former lighting director for TV soaps and sitcoms gave a series of contradictory statements this week about whether he would be there, with the Los Angeles saying he had undergone heart surgery on Wednesday.

"Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health," Meghan Markle said in a statement.

"I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday."

Saturday`s wedding will be a sumptuous show of British pageantry, likely to attract a huge world audience.

Supporters hope the union of one of the most popular royals and a glamorous American actress, a divorcee with a white father and an African-American mother, will reinvigorate the monarchy.

However, much of the carefully-planned and choreographed build-up to the ceremony has been overshadowed by confusion over whether Markle`s father.

Her mother, Doria Ragland, a yoga instructor and social worker, has arrived in Britain and is due to meet the 92-year-old queen and her husband Prince Philip, 96, on Thursday.

Sam Allardyce has been sacked as the manager of Everton on Wednesday.

Under his guidance, Everton saved themselves from getting relegated and marked a mid-table finish.

It's been six months, he replaced Ronald Koeman and the now he has been eliminated as his rudimentary style of play has proved deeply unpopular with fans of the Merseyside club.

"We have made the decision that, as part of our longer-term plan, we will be appointing a new manager this summer," said new chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale.

"On behalf of the chairman, board of directors and Mr Moshiri, I'd like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton."

"Sam was brought in at a challenging time last season to provide us with some stability and we are grateful to him for doing that," she added.

Former Watford and Hull City manager Marco Silva is the favourite to take over and could complete the move to Goodison Park six months after the club failed to prise him away from Vicarage Road.

Despite signing an 18-month deal, Allardyce appeared resigned to his fate after Sunday's 3-1 defeat at former club West Ham, during which Everton supporters called for his sacking.

"I can't quite say confident after all the rumours I'm reading in the paper," said Allardyce, when questioned about his future. "Generally there's no smoke without fire. We'll wait and see when we meet up."

Allardyce last month dismissed a survey sent to supporters asking them to grade his performance out of 10 as a mistake on the part of the club's marketing director, who he said does not "understand" how football works.

As part of the questionnaire, supporters were asked whether they agree with the statement: "I have a high level of trust in the current manager and coaching staff at Everton e.g. in making the right decisions to get the best out of the team."

Allardyce, whose previous clubs include Bolton, Newcastle, Sunderland and Crystal Palace, landed his dream job with England in 2016 but that turned sour after only one match, with Allardyce stepping down following a newspaper sting.

Everton were unwilling to pay a reported compensation fee of £15 million ($20 million) wanted by Watford for Silva when Koeman was sacked.

However, Silva himself was then dismissed by Watford in January with the Hornets citing disruption caused by Everton's "unwarranted approach" for a major dip in form.

A change in manager could also affect Wayne Rooney's future at the club.

England's all-time top scorer had reportedly agreed to terms on a £12.5 million move to DC United in Major League Soccer last week.

Rooney had seen his involvement limited under Allardyce but could be convinced to stay at his boyhood club by a new regime.

Police chiefs have urged England fans attending the World Cup not to display the flag of St George over fears it will be seen as antagonistic to their Russian hosts.

Mark Roberts of the National Police Chiefs' Council is heading to Russia with a team of fellow officers to work with their Russian counterparts to protect up to 10,000 England fans.

"I think people need to be really careful with flags. It can come across as almost imperialistic... and can cause antagonism," Roberts, the national lead for football policing, told Britain's Times newspaper.

"We really urge some caution about people putting flags out and waving them about in public.

"We would not expect people to come across to this country, get drunk and drape flags on the Cenotaph (the memorial to Britain's national war dead) so we need to extend the same courtesy when we go abroad."

After Russian hooligans attacked England fans in Marseilles in 2016, they posted photos of dozens of "captured" St George's flags, the report said.

Roberts warned fans to be particularly careful in Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, which hosts England's opening game against Tunisia on June 18.

Tensions are high between Britain and Russia over the poisoning of former double agent Yuri Skripal and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury earlier this year. Britain has blamed Russia for the attempted murder, a charge that Moscow has strongly denied.
