UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings and charged England's Football Association (FA) for disturbances during Sunday's Euro 2020 final against Italy at Wembley, Europe's soccer governing body said on Tuesday.

UEFA also said it had appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to conduct a separate investigation into the "events involving supporters which occurred inside and around the stadium".

The final, which Italy won in a penalty shootout, was marred by clashes between fans and officials in and around the stadium.

British police, who said 19 of its officers were injured, have so far arrested a total of 86 people. Some 53 of the arrests were at Wembley.

The charges against the FA include: invasion of the field of play by its supporters, throwing of objects by its supporters, disturbance caused by its supporters during the national anthem and lighting of a firework.

Boos were heard around the stadium when the Italian anthem was played before kickoff while a pitch invader interrupted the match, with the referee stopping play while the stewards chased him down.

"The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body in due course," UEFA said.

The Met Police had urged fans not to travel to Wembley if they did not have a ticket. However, several fans breached security cordons and charged into the perimeter area of Wembley before kickoff.

The FA said on Monday they would conduct a full review into the security breach. They condemned the behaviour of fans who forced their way into the stadium and apologised to those who had tickets for the "unprecedented level of public disorder".

British Formula One driver Lando Norris was mugged and had his watch worth 40,000 pounds ($55,364) stolen, with his team McLaren saying the 21-year-old was "understandably shaken".

Last week the FA were fined 30,000 euros ($35,460) after a laser pointer was shone at Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel during what proved to be the deciding moment of their Euro 2020 semi-final.

The FA were also charged for fans booing during the Danish anthem and for the setting off of fireworks during the semi-final.

Football: UEFA investigating Wembley clashes, charge England FA after Euro final

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday condemned the racist abuse directed at three Black England players who missed their penalties in the team’s shootout loss to Italy in the final of the European Championship.

Euro 2020: England players face racial abuse after defeat, PM condemns behaviour

After losing the Euro final to Italy, England fans unleashed a wave of abuse at their own players. They attacked Italian fans and damaged public property.

Gravitas: Sore losers: England fans turn savage after Euro loss

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will tell social media companies on Tuesday to do more to tackle online abuse, condemning racist comments made against England's soccer players as coming from "the dark spaces of the internet".

Johnson's government has come under fire by some players and commentators, who say the Conservative prime minister and some of his top team have fanned the flames of prejudice and fuelled the abuse of three Black players in the soccer team.

But Johnson's spokesman said the prime minister had urged people to support the team and not boo them for taking the knee - a protest first made by American football quarterback Colin Kaepernick and followed by the Black Lives Matter movement.

"He said the abuse was utterly disgraceful and had emerged from the dark spaces of the internet," the spokesman said, describing an earlier meeting between Johnson and his cabinet team of top ministers.

"He said he would use today's meeting with social media firms to reiterate the urgent need for action ahead of tougher laws coming into force through the online harms bill," he told journalists.

After England's loss to Italy in the Euros final match on Sunday, Marcus Rashford, 23, Jadon Sancho, 21, and Bukayo Saka, 19, were the targets of abuse after they missed spot-kicks in a penalty shootout.

The government condemned the abuse but looks set to try to turn attention to social media companies, which have long been pressed by campaigners to better regulate what is published on their sites.

"We expect social media companies to do everything they can to identify these people," Johnson's spokesman said.

The issue of online abuse of players led to British soccer authorities briefly boycotting social media platforms before the European tournament, while Britain is planning legislation to force tech firms to do more.

But among the abuse, there has been an outpouring of support for the three players.

England soccer fans stepped up to defend Rashford by covering the racist abuse scrawled on a mural to the Black player in his hometown with messages of love and support for a "hero" who they said was a national role model.

ALSO READ: Euro 2020: Gareth Southgate says England fans can intimidate Italy but not boo anthem Despite the fact that chances were restricted, Federico Chiesa went close with a low left-foot shot from 20 yards which flew barely wide of the England post in the blink of an eye before half-time. Federico Chiesa's miss demonstrated a warning of what was to come in the second half, with Italy ruling the game and making various possibilities before Leonardo Bonucci evened out the scores partially as the second progressed half. Lorenzo Insigne passed a 20-yard free-kick wide on 50 minutes before keeper Pickford had to plunge low to one side to deny Federico Chiesa. Italy's strength was compensated, however, when Leonardo Bonucci clambered home from close proximity after England had neglected to clear a corner. Bonucci struck from the rebound after Pickford had pushed Marco Verratti's header onto the post. England were playing in the first major final since winning the 1966 World Cup. This was their most recent sorrow in shootouts at a major tournament, after routs in 1990, 1996, 1998, 2004, 2006, and 2012. The Euro football festival is over as Italy who kick-started the tournament with a success over Turkey ended up being the champions of the current edition. They had a stunning excursion all through the competition and all the credit goes to Roberto Mancini who restored this group and convert them into a feral side.

Euro 2020 Final: 'It is going to Rome' comes true as Italy beat England 3-2 on penalties

The news of jubilation and celebrations in Italy after their win in Euro 2020 final has not been able to overshadow the grim news of English players receiving racial abuse from their own fans. The social media and news world is awash with expressions of hatred especially directed at players of colour in the English squad who missed their penalty kicks in the globally watched final on Sunday.

On a positive note, who's who of sports and politicians, even British royalty have been very clear in their stance against racism. They have stood behind England team that valiantly gave a tough fight to Italy and even dominated Italy in first half of the match.

UK PM Boris Johnson was clear in his words

"This England team deserve to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media. Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves," he tweeted.

From footballers to Royalty, English players find support against racial abuse hurled at them

Roy Keane said England teenager Bukayo Saka should not have been given the task of taking their crucial fifth penalty in Sunday's shootout defeat by Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

Saka, 19, had to score to send the shootout to sudden death but his kick was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper had also saved from Jadon Sancho after Marcus Rashford had hit the post.

Former Manchester United captain Keane said more experienced players should have stepped up and taken the responsibility.

AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho echoed Keane's comments.

Euro 2020: Roy Keane slams England for letting Bukayo Saka take crucial penalty

After 18 months of pandemic hell, Italy revelled in some soccer heaven on Monday after its national team brought back the Euro cup for the first time since 1968 following victory over England in London.

Led by coach Roberto Mancini, the players landed shortly after dawn to find many fans were still celebrating in the early morning cool, with the smell of fireworks lingering in the streets and flags flapping out of car windows.

"We really needed to get together again, to celebrate, to be happy, to have a shared moment. We really needed it," said Rome resident Sara Giudice.

Italy was the first Western country to be slammed by the coronavirus last year and has registered 127,775 deaths so far, more than any European country bar Britain.

Most of the restrictions aimed at curbing contagion have been lifted and Sunday felt like liberation in many squares across the country where the soccer triumph was greeted by an explosion of cheers, blaring car horns, and tears.

"You were in front of our eyes. You were in our hearts. The pain of those who have suffered. The hardships of those who have been brought to their knees by the pandemic," veteran captain Giorgio Chiellini wrote on Twitter.

The team is known simply as the Azzurri, the colour of the deep blue skies that sit over Italy throughout the summer, uniting the country as much as the shared passion for soccer.

"Soccer is not a metaphor of life, or politics, but the national team always ends up resembling the nation it represents. This past month, Mancini's team has reminded us that being Italian isn't so bad after all," Corriere della Sera newspaper said.

A brass band marched through the streets of the southern island of Lampedusa, fans rowed through the canals of Venice and a procession of honking cars drove along the same street in the northern city of Bergamo, where last year army trucks queued up to collect coffins of COVID victims.

Plaudits poured in from all sides, from politicians to priests, hoping that success on the soccer field held a broader message for a nation that registered its worst recession last year since World War Two and is now seeking redemption.

"Behind this team there is an entire country that never gives up, that never quits, that always finds new energy to express courage," Italy's association of Catholic bishops wrote.

Farmers' federation Coldiretti hoped the economy would receive a similar boost to 2006, when the Azzurri won the World Cup. On that occasion, exports rose 10% the following year, while 3.5% more tourists visited the country as the national brand received a global fillip, Coldiretti said in a statement.

"If this (victory) remains a beautiful memory in a dark moment or if instead it becomes a symbol of rebirth depends only on us," Corriere della Sera wrote.

As England and Italy squared off in the Euro 2020 final, thousands across the world watched anxiously.

The two teams were on the route to make history.

While England had never won a European Football Championship, Italy had won the title in the 1968 edition.

England's loss came as a shock to many. Off-field, some fans took it too far, hurling racist abuses at players from the team and assaulting their Italian counterparts.

Videos indicate fans tussling with one another, and taking on rival supporters.

And that was just the beginning. As shown in a clip, a person was even tossed into the river in London.

EURO QUALIFYING England topped qualifying Group A with seven wins out of eight, their only setback being a 2-1 defeat away to the Czech Republic after they beat the second-placed Czechs 5-0 in the reverse fixture at Wembley in the opening round of games. England’s run in which they scored 37 goals and conceded six also included a 7-0 drubbing of Montenegro at Wembley, a 6-0 away rout of Bulgaria and a 5-3 home win over Kosovo in Southampton. The Czechs qualified alongside England and were drawn in the same group at the finals also including Croatia and Scotland. GROUP STAGE ENGLAND 1-0 CROATIA The Three Lions started their Group D campaign at Wembley by getting revenge on the Croatians for a 2-1 defeat in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals with an industrious performance. Although they lacked creativity at times, England ground out the win after Raheem Sterling got on the end of a defense-splitting pass from Kalvin Phillips and powered his shot past Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic in the 57th minute. A superb defensive display by England denied Croatia any clear-cut chances at the other end. ENGLAND 0-0 SCOTLAND England headed into the clash at Wembley as favorites but were unable to break Scotland down and their profligacy in front of goal was nearly punished at the other end when Reece James had to clear a Lyndon Dykes shot off the line. Scotland’s 20-year old midfielder Billy Gilmour, man of the match after a superb individual performance, tested positive for COVID-19 after the game and as a result England’s Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell, Gilmour’s Chelsea teammates who embraced him at the final whistle, had to self-isolate for a week. CZECH REPUBLIC 0-1 ENGLAND Another workmanlike performance at Wembley saw England finish top of the group after an early goal from Sterling gave them their second win of the tournament and made sure they kept did not concede any goals before the knockout stage. With striker Harry Kane stifled in the group stage, livewire Sterling stepped up again to nod home a teasing 12th-minute cross from Jack Grealish to book a last-16 clash with Germany. LAST-16 ENGLAND 2-0 GERMANY A mature-looking England celebrated their first knockout stage win over Germany in a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup final after late goals from Sterling and Kane sank the Germans in a raucous atmosphere at Wembley. After an even first half, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford kept out a Kai Havertz shot with an acrobatic save and the hosts were on the front foot after Sterling tapped in a Luke Shaw cross in the 75th minute. Thomas Mueller spurned a golden chance to equalize soon after when he shot wide when through on goal and Kane sealed the win in the 86th with a stooping header from a Grealish cross. QUARTER-FINALS UKRAINE 0-4 ENGLAND England stormed into the last four with their most impressive performance of the tournament as the rejuvenated Kane scored twice while Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson added one each at the Olympic stadium in Rome. Captain Kane slid in from close range to fire England into a fourth-minute lead and Maguire doubled the advantage in the 46th with a thumping header into the far corner as he got on the end of a Shaw free-kick. Kane made it 3-0 four minutes later with a simple header after another excellent delivery by Shaw and Henderson completed the rout in the 63rd with his first international goal when he headed home a Mason Mount corner. SEMI-FINALS ENGLAND 2-1 DENMARK Having conceded their first goal in the tournament as they returned to Wembley, England fought back to win in extra time after falling behind to a sublime Mikkel Damsgaard free kick in the 30th minute. The forward hit the top corner with a rasping shot which flew over the wall but England were level nine minutes later when Denmark captain Simon Kjaer could only turn a low Bukayo Saka cross into his own net ahead of the onrushing Sterling. Kane netted the winner in the 104th minute as he swept in a rebound after goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel parried the striker’s penalty straight into his path, with the spot kick awarded after Sterling went down under a challenge from Joakim Maehle.

Football: England's road to the Euro 2020 final

England and their long-suffering fans finally have the chance to add another trophy to the 1966 World Cup after they overcame Denmark 2-1 in extra time on Wednesday to reach the European Championship final for the first time.

Harry Kane's goal, following up after his penalty had been saved, finally saw off battling Denmark to set up a Sunday showdown against Italy, also looking to shake off the '60s as they seek to win the title they last lifted in 1968.

On a night to remember in front of almost 60,000 roaring fans, England fell behind to Mikkel Damsgaard's superb free kick, equalised with an own goal, dominated the game and then won it via their captain, albeit somewhat unconvincingly, in the 104th minute.

"Unbelievable - what a game though," said Kane. "We dug deep and we got there when it mattered. We reacted really well - we're in a final at home, what a feeling."

It was of course a particularly special night for coach Gareth Southgate, whose penalty shoot-out miss sent England out of the semi-finals of Euro 96. "We said to the players at some point we're going to have to show resilience and come back from setbacks, and we did that tonight," he said.

"The most pleasing thing is that we've given our fans and our nation a fantastic night and the journey carries on for another four days. We've said we want to create memories I've said to the young ones 'it isn't always like this'."

It was a tough way for Denmark to end their emotional ride from the fear and distress of Christian Eriksen’s opening game collapse to their first semi-final since their shock Euro 92 win, but their exhausted players left Wembley with socks rolled down but heads held high.

"I am proud of this group and everyone who has been on this journey. It has been fantastic to be involved. I am hungry and empty, but I am also proud," said Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

CROWD STUNNED

Having swept past Ukraine 4-0 in the quarter-finals, England knew they faced a considerable step up on Wednesday and the quality in the Danish ranks was amply illustrated after 30 minutes when Damsgaard fired a powerful, dipping 25-yard free-kick over the wall and beyond the diving Jordan Pickford.

England had reached the semis without conceding a goal and the crowd were stunned. The question of how England would respond to their first real setback would now be addressed.

The answer was calmly and patiently, as they passed their way back into the ascendancy. Raheem Sterling was denied at point-blank range by Kasper Schmeichel before the 39th-minute equaliser when Bukayo Saka hit the byline and fizzed over a low cross that Simon Kjaer bundled over his own line in his attempt to stop the ball from reaching Sterling.

Schmeichel was on hand again with an excellent diving save to palm away a Harry Maguire header and England began to turn the screw in the second half, but, despite their relentless passing and probing around the box, they struggled to carve out a clear opening and the match rolled into extra time.

The extra 30 minutes became a virtual attack v defence exercise, as Schmeichel saved again from Kane and Jack Grealish and the fear of penalties began to rise among the home fans.

The ever-dangerous Sterling continued to drive into the box though and was eventually brought down by Joakim Maehle for the VAR-reviewed penalty that Kane struck poorly and Schmeichel blocked, only for the captain to tuck home the rebound.

England then negotiated the last 15 minutes to spark the loudest, and surely most confident rendition of "Football's Coming Home", ever to ring around Wembley.

"When you’ve waited as long as we have to get through a semi-final, the players - considering the limited international experience some of them have - have done an incredible job," Southgate said.

"We suffered in Moscow (in the 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat by Croatia) on a night like this and we've managed to put that right. It's an incredible occasion to be a part of. The fans were incredible all night. There was mayhem on the pitch and I was part of it. We’ve got to enjoy the fact we're in the final but there's one more massive hurdle to conquer."

Football: England into first-ever Euros final after ending Danish dream run

While England exulted at reaching a first major final since 1966, there was increasing outcry abroad over the penalty awarded for a foul on Raheem Sterling in extra time to give them a 2-1 win over Denmark in their Euro 2020 semi-final.

An array of media and football figures joined Danish fans in condemning the penalty as too cheap for such a big game, some saying England's haughty views on diving looked hypocritical in view of Sterling's tumble at the lightest of touches.

"They always say how bad it is when a foreign player tries to deceive the referee with a dive. In pure English football, this does not happen. Apart from, of course, in a European Championship semi-final," said Spanish newspaper Marca.

"It would be nice for English football to stop giving lectures to the rest of the continent about diving."

The speedy and swerving Sterling, who has been accused of diving before in England's Premier League, went over in the box after minimal contact from Denmark's Joakim Maehle.

Dutch referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot and upheld that after briefly consulting the Video Assistant Referee, though without reviewing the move on the pitchside monitor.

Harry Kane's penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel but the captain followed up to score and give England the win.

'FAR TOO CHEAP'

"This was a soft penalty for me ... far too cheap a penalty for a Euro semi-final," ex-referee Jonas Eriksson, who officiated at Euro 2012 and 2016, said on Swedish network SVT.

"I am mostly surprised and annoyed that the VAR doesn't tell the referee. This decides which team goes through."

Sterling himself said after the game it was a clear penalty with his leg clipped. But former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who is now the international governing body of FIFA's head of global football development, was among those doubting.

"In a moment like that, it's important the referee is absolutely convinced it was a penalty. It was not clear enough to say 'yes it is'. He should have at least had a look at the screen," he said on the Qatari network beIN Sports.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho went further, telling radio station Talksport "For me, it's never a penalty" even though he said the best team won and he was happy for England.

Denmark might also have felt aggrieved by the fact a second ball was on the pitch when Sterling entered the area, which according to regulations could have led to play being halted.

Adding insult to injury, a fan shone a laser pen on Schmeichel as he prepared to face Kane's penalty.

"They won with a penalty which was a blatant dive," fumed former Germany player and pundit Dietmar Hamann. "England always prides itself on being the home of fair play and no diving."

Elsewhere, France's L'Equipe newspaper said England had only breached the Danish defense with "a questionable, not least generous, penalty", while in Italy - England's opponents in Sunday's final - Gazzetta Dello Sport said, "it's a shame they get these little bits of help because they don't need it".

"It's diving home," tweeted Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri in a sarcastic reference to England's football anthem "It's coming home."

Euro 2020: England told to stop lecturing on diving after 'cheap' penalty

When England players woke on Thursday morning, back at their secluded countryside training base St George's Park, they will have no doubt felt the afterglow of the wild celebrations of their Euro 2020 semi-final win over Denmark at Wembley.

But while across the nation debris was being cleared from parties into the early hours, England will have faced their own more sober reality check.

For all the outpouring of joy, euphoric refrains of "Football's Coming Home", and hyperbole including one pundit's call for a national holiday, England have not actually won anything yet.

In fact, the only thing "coming home" at this stage is England going back to Wembley for another match on Sunday in the final against Italy.

"It's feet back on the ground this morning. Everyone enjoyed it last night but now we have to come up against one of the most experienced teams in world football in Italy, it will be more difficult than last night," said former England winger and now BBC radio analyst Chris Waddle.

Roberto Mancini's side are unbeaten in 33 matches and reached the final after a penalty shoot-out win over Spain.

This is only England's second appearance in a major final but will be Italy's tenth.

For the pundits, ex-players unable to reach a Euro or World Cup final in their career, and the long-suffering England fans, the delight is obvious at the ending of a 55-year wait.

But one of England manager Gareth Southgate's most-used mantras in this tournament has been for his team to "make their own history" and not feel past burdens.

The approach has worked so far as England have avoided the pitfalls of so many other campaigns, beating old rivals Germany in the last 16 and not losing their nerve even when behind to Denmark and then going into extra-time.

ITALY'S 'WARRIORS'

Amid the high of Wednesday's celebrations, Southgate again injected focus.

"Finals are to be won. We’ve got to regroup, prepare properly, and recover because tonight’s taken a lot, emotionally, physically. Italy had that as well. They have an extra day to recover," he said.

"Italy are a very good side, I’ve thought that for the past couple of years. They’ve shown the outstanding form, they’ve got defensive warriors at the back who have been through everything," he said.

But there is more to Southgate than the usual coach's cliche of "taking each game as it comes" and he is well aware of the emotional import of the tournament.

"We’ve had three memorable games on the bounce now. We’ve said we want to create memories for our nation," he said.

And while it may take a little while to sink in, the abiding memory of this tournament for England will be defined not by beating Germany, nor putting four goals past Ukraine or the victory over Denmark, but by the outcome of Sunday's final.

Italy knows all about that: they lost their last two appearances in the Euro finals in 2000 and 2012 but sandwiched in between was their 2006 World Cup triumph.

Every Italian fan can remember Marcello Lippi's lineups from their successful campaign in Germany, but fewer will recall the defeated players from the Euro final losses.

The 60,000 crowd on Sunday will be overwhelmingly English, just as it was when the team won their only major title, the 1966 World Cup. The names of that team have never been forgotten.

Euro 2020: Reality is 'coming home' as England face Italy final

With their Euro 2020 campaign looking over by halftime in the opening game after Christian Eriksen's collapse, Denmark somehow came blazing back to reach the semi-finals, only to finally run out of steam as they lost to England after extra time.

The closest most of the Danish players had been to such tragedy and drama was most likely the statue of Hamlet at the entrance of their hotel base in Helsingor, but Eriksen's cardiac arrest against Finland thrust them into the global spotlight.

The shocking scenes that unfolded on live television stunned the footballing world as medics battled to save the life of their talismanic midfielder while his distressed teammates looked on.

Captain Simon Kjaer showed great strength to help save Eriksen's life as keeper Kasper Schmeichel tried to pull his side together, while others wept before the dubious decision to restart the game against Finland was taken.

It resulted in a 1-0 loss that not even the Finns seemed to care much about, despite it being their first game at the finals of a major tournament.

In the aftermath of that trauma, Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand spoke of how the Danes needed to have the courage to allow themselves to experience their feelings, and he and his players displayed a range of raw emotions in the following days.

Some, like Schmeichel, seemed to recover quicker than others but Kjaer, the rock on which the current Denmark side is built, was not sure he wanted to play the next game against Belgium, a 2-1 loss that came as no surprise.

AMBITIOUS FOOTBALL

Denmark's campaign was in turmoil, but having shown glimpses of Hjulmand's expansive, ambitious football, the signs of a potential comeback were there once they managed to gradually put the shock of that opening game behind them.

Mikkel Damsgaard led the way, showing no fear whatsoever as he shouldered Eriksen's playmaking responsibilities and scored a brilliant opening goal against Russia in their final group game to ignite a cathartic night in Copenhagen.

Battered beyond belief, but knowing that Eriksen was alive, the Danes simply refused to throw in the towel as 25,000 red-and-white clad fans roared them on to a spectacular 4-1 win that saw them qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

They walloped Wales 4-0 in the last 16 as the headlines finally turned to their football, rather than Eriksen's fate.

A nervy 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in the quarters set up the semi-final clash with England. They even took the lead through another brilliant Damsgaard goal, but the cracks were beginning to show.

A Kjaer's own goal leveled the game and by the hour mark they began to wilt, the adrenalin fading and the emotional toll of the last few weeks making its presence felt as an extra-time penalty by Harry Kane ended their tournament.

Showing bravery and skill, there was no shame in that defeat as the Danes weathered the storm of Eriksen's collapse, winning new fans at home and abroad and auguring a bright and promising future, despite the drama they had to endure at Euro 2020.

"Those impacted will now observe a period of self-isolation from July 4 following the UK Government's protocol on quarantine.

"The remaining members of the party have been deemed close contacts and will also isolate," the release further mentioned.

The ECB has also confirmed that the squad for the limited-overs series will be announced later today and Ben Stokes will be named the captain of the squad.

"Ben Stokes will return to England duties and captain the squad – which will be named in the next few hours. Incoming squad and support team members will follow PCR tests and bridging protocols to ensure safe entry to camp," said ECB.

Tom Harrison, Chief Executive Officer, commented: "We have been mindful that the emergence of the Delta variant, along with our move away from the stringent enforcement of bio secure environments, could increase the chances of an outbreak. We made a strategic choice to try to adapt protocols, in order to support the overall wellbeing of our players and management staff who have spent much of the last 14 months living in very restricted conditions."

"Overnight we have worked swiftly to identify a new squad, and we are grateful to Ben Stokes who will return to England duties to Captain. We also recognise the impact this news will have on our First Class Counties and their Men’s playing squads and thank them, along with our partners Sky and Royal London, for their ongoing support in dealing with this pandemic."

England defender Harry Maguire will be at the heart of Gareth Southgate's defense in Wednesday's Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark, but he did not know if he would be fit enough to even make the squad after an ankle injury in May.

Maguire suffered ligament damage in Manchester United's May 9 Premier League match with Aston Villa and missed the rest of the domestic season and his club's Europa League final loss to Villarreal.

He missed England's warm-up games and opening two matches in the Euros' group stage but returned in the final group fixture with the Czech Republic and has been alongside John Stones since then.

Asked if he feared he might have to watch the Euros on TV rather than be on the field, Maguire, who scored a header in Saturday's 4-0 win over Ukraine, said there was uncertainty.

"I think with any injury, you don't know how you are going to recover, you don't know the rehab if you are going to have a setback. Touchwood, I haven't had any setbacks in rehab and it has all gone smoothly, all gone to plan and a little bit quicker than we all thought," he told a news conference on Monday.

"Obviously to miss the Europa League final was disappointing and then I fully set my sights on making the Euros squad."

The Yorkshireman said he did not know when he was named in that squad when he would be ready to return to action but is pleased with the way he has coped.

"It's not like being thrown into a friendly match, it's the European Championship, so it's so demanding and the intensity of each game," he said.

"So where it has gone and where it has been, I think that is a great credit to the medical staff at Manchester United and England for the way they went about everything, the way they pushed me every day and obviously I am really proud of myself in terms of the way that I pushed myself as well."

Maguire was part of the England team which lost to Croatia in the semi-final of the World Cup in Russia three years ago and says the memory of that loss is in the players' minds.

"Losing the semi-final at the World Cup hurt a lot. So we need to make sure when it comes on Wednesday night we get a positive feeling rather than the one we got against Croatia."

Euro 2020: England 'motivated' not to repeat semi-final heartache

England have the chance to reach a first major final since their 1966 World Cup triumph when they take on Denmark at Wembley in Wednesday's Euro 2020 semi-final, but they will need to banish a history of stumbling at this stage.

Gareth Southgate's side were impressive in their 4-0 dismantling of Ukraine in Rome on Saturday, heralding a wave of euphoria in the country as media showered the team in praise.

England fans need no reminder, however, that their team have lost four major semi-finals since Alf Ramsey's team's title.

Southgate has been keen to keep the burden of history out of his team's thinking. If he needs a way to bring his players back down to earth before the semi-final, he does not have to look back far for a warning against complacency.

An England side containing ten of the current squad faced Denmark at Wembley in October in a Nations League match and lost 1-0 to a Christian Eriksen penalty.

Eriksen, who is recovering from the shocking cardiac episode he suffered as he collapsed in Denmark's opening Euro game, will not feature at Wembley of course.

But Kasper Hjulmand's side, who beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in their quarter-final, will be largely the same as the one which left London with three points eight months ago.

The lessons from that game are limited by the fact that England played almost an hour with ten men after Harry Maguire was sent off in the 31st minute - but that in itself is a reminder of the way a moment of indiscipline can swing a game.

Maguire looks rock solid at the moment as part of an England defence which has yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

And with Harry Kane back to scoring form with three goals in the two knockout stage games, England look to be peaking at the right moment.

ERIKSEN FACTOR

There was, however, a similar feeling among England fans after they beat Sweden in the last eight of the World Cup three years ago in Russia only to fall to Croatia in the semi.

"Now we've replicated what we did there, but that won't be enough to fulfil the group," said Southgate, who knows that the national mood would change sharply if his team stumble at the same stage this time.

Denmark's performances in this tournament, where they have responded to the Eriksen trauma in such inspiring fashion, should also keep England focused.

The Danes got out of Group B with a rousing 4-1 win over Russia in Copenhagen before thrashing Wales 4-0 in Amsterdam.

In the quarter-final, they beat a well-organised Czech side 2-1 in the heat of Baku.

Much of the focus on Denmark has been on the way the team has come together and fought so well after the shocking scenes against Finland, with Southgate noting they are "riding a wave of emotion", but they have been much more than battlers.

Hjulmand's team have a clear structure and method to their play which has earned them their place in the last four.

In attack, Martin Braithwaite creates the spaces which Mikkel Damsgaard and Kasper Dolberg have exploited well and there is a threat from attacking wing-backs Jens Stryger Larsen and the excellent Joakim Maehle.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Thomas Delaney are a firm presence in the centre of midfield while the backline in front of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has been solid.

Unbeaten England though starts as clear favourites with a stronger squad and home advantage and the fear that has gripped them in previous campaigns refreshingly absent so far.

Spain or Italy, who play in Tuesday's other semi, await the winner in Sunday's final at Wembley.
