Strong earthquake of magnitude 7.0 strikes Aegean Sea

Polish military divers on Monday will begin an operation to defuse a massive World War II bomb at the bottom of a channel near the Baltic Sea.

The five-tonne device has been nicknamed "Tallboy" and is also known as an "earthquake bomb". Tallboys were designed to explode underground next to a target, triggering shock waves that would cause destruction.

The bomb is six metres (19 feet) long and has 2.4 tonnes of explosives -- equivalent to around 3.6 tons of TNT.

Dropped by the Royal Air Force in an attack on a Nazi warship in 1945, it was discovered last year during dredging close to the port city of Swinoujscie -- formerly Swinemunde, a part of Germany -- in the far northwest of Poland.

Maritime traffic on the navigation channel and surrounding waterways will be suspended in an area of 16 kilometres around the bomb disposal operation.

Around 750 local residents are being evacuated from an area of 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) around the bomb and the operation is expected to last up to five days.

The navy divers will instead use a technique known as deflagration to burn the explosive charge without causing a detonation, using a remotely controlled device to pierce through the shell to begin combustion.

HOW IT ENDED UP IN THE BALTIC

During World War II, the area was home to one of the German navy's most important Baltic bases and the area was subjected to massive bombardments. The ship's cannons were being used to hold back the advance of the Red Army in the dying days of the war.

On April 16, 1945, the RAF sent 18 Lancaster bombers from the 617th Squadron -- known as the "Dambusters". The bombers released 12 Tallboys on the Lutzow but one failed to explode and one of the planes crashed on the island of Karsibor, killing all seven crew on board.

The ship survived the raid but was eventually seized by the Soviet army and used for target practice after the war. It eventually sank in the Baltic in September 1947.

Extreme weather changes triggered by climate change continue to get intenser over time. According to the United Nations, this acceleration has fastened in the last 20 years.

Owing to such drastic changes in weather patterns, countries around the globe are paying a heavy human and economic toll. This pattern is expected to intensify over the coming years, according to the UN. Asia remains the hardest-hit by extreme weather changes, the agency added.

China had the highest instances of natural disasters at 577. The United States followed suit with 467 disaster events. India stood at number 3 with 321 disaster events, followed by Philippines (304) and Indonesia at 278. The numbers take into account the time period between 2000 and 2019.

Out of the top 10 countries on the list, eight are from Asia. Over the course of 20 years, 7,348 disaster events shook the globe, killing over 1.23 million people, and affecting 4.2 billion people. This also caused economic losses amounting upto $2.97 trillion.

In the last 20 years, the number of major floods also doubled to 3,254. Additionally, wildfires, droughts, and extreme temperatures plagued the globe.

"More people are being affected by the expanding climate emergency," Mami Mizutori, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, said during a briefing.

Additionally, Mizutori urged governments to invest in detection systems that spot disasters early, and to also work on risk reduction strategies for disasters.

The statistics for the report were provided by Debarati Guha-Sapir from the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, the University of Louvain, Belgium.

Guha-Sapir told Reuters, "If this level of growth in extreme weather events continues over the next twenty years, the future of mankind looks very bleak indeed”.

The tech giant has developed a technique that could cover a vast area. Google said that it is using existing fibre to detect disturbances on the seafloor. The company said in a blog post: “Better yet, our technique relies on equipment that is present on the vast majority of the world’s existing fiber optic systems, so it is broadly applicable.”

According to Google, these optic fibres can connect different continents to the ocean floor through which most of the internet’s international traffic too travels. “Google’s global network of undersea cables makes it possible to share, search, send, and receive information around the world at the speed of light,” it added.

These cables are made of optic fibres that could carry the data in the form of a light pulse travelling at 204,190 kilometres per second.

The receiving end detects these light pulses and a digital signal processor is used to correct distortions. When tracked as a part of optical transmission, the light is in the state of polarization (SOP). “The SOP changes in response to mechanical disturbances along the cable and tracking these disturbances enables us to detect seismic activity,” Google said.

Google began the project in 2013 and conducted its first experiment in 2019. Since then the technology has detected mild intensity earthquakes in Mexico and Chile. If successfully implemented, this tech could save millions of lives!

As the number of earthquakes in Delhi NCR is increasing every week, the experts are forecasting a major earthquake that can damage the national capital.

Following warnings by various experts and committees, the Delhi High Court has asked the experts to show some groundwork, rather than merely consulting and filing paperwork.

"It goes without saying that mere paperwork and consultations would not solve the imminent threat that the citizens of NCT of Delhi face due to heightened seismic activity and that it is only actual work on ground which would come to rescue of the citizens," the court said.

Paperwork and consultations will not avert earthquake: Delhi HC tells government

After more than 10 earthquakes ranging around magnitude 4.5 on the Richter scale, experts fear a major earthquake can jolt the Delhi NCR region in June.

Professor Chandon Ghose of the Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu, has warned that after-effects of such an earthquake could be cataclysmic.

As per the experts, the region of Delhi NCR falls under seismic zone-4, and is prone to tremors.

Also read: Five asteroids head towards Earth; one the size of stadium

One major reason for the increased number of tremors has been proved to be the active nature of local fault system. Experts believe such fault systems can produce earthquakes on around 6 to 6.5 Richter scale.

Majority experts have claimed that it is hard to predict the exact time, place and extent of the earthquake. However, they also believe that the predictions will turn into reality soon as there is a constant seismic activity going around in the Delhi-NCR region, which can give rise to a major earthquake.

Also read: Construction of emergency landing airstrip on NH-44 for Indian Airforce starts in Kashmir

One major threat in such a case is the poorly-constructed buildings. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), many of the buildings in the Delhi-NCR region do not adhere to the mandatory guidelines, which can lead to severe destruction if an earthquake of 6.0 Richter scale, or more, occurs in the region.

Even though this is known to the builders and the officials that the area is prone to earthquakes, builders generally ignore the guidelines laid down by the BIS. This compromises the safety of thousands of the residents of these areas. So, if a major earthquake, more than 6.0 Richter scale, strikes, the damage will be severe.

According to studies of the Seismic Hazard Microzonation, it has been observed that few areas in the South and Central Delhi are safer than the areas surrounding the Yamuna river. The Yamuna riverbed is more prone to the earthquakes.

An urgent modification in the BIS codes, and stricter rules are needed to make reduce the damage done by the earthquakes.

Japan is a country that is the most seismically active regions in the world as it sits in the Pacific Ring of Fire. However, the country has better condition of houses, and the buildings match the constructions codes. India, according to experts, lacks the strict protocol, which can lead to massive destruction in such cases.

Also read: Five asteroids head towards Earth; one the size of stadium One major reason for the increased number of tremors has been proved to be the active nature of local fault system. Also read: Construction of emergency landing airstrip on NH-44 for Indian Airforce starts in Kashmir One major threat in such a case is the poorly-constructed buildings. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who has a reputation for keeping her cool in the face of a crisis, was undaunted by an earthquake that struck the capital Wellington on Monday while she was doing a live TV interview, and calmly continued with the programme. Capital Wellington and nearby areas were shaken by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake as the live interview was underway. Ardern was speaking on a live TV interview at the time from the parliament building, called the Beehive. "We’re just having a bit of an earthquake here, Ryan...," she told the host of the show Ryan Bridge, as she, the camera and other things around her shook. "Quite a decent shake here...if you see things moving behind me. The Beehive moves a little more than most," she said. Ardern assured the host that she was safe and the interview resumed. "We are fine, I'm not under any hanging lights and I look like I am in a structurally strong place," she added. The video was soon viral on social media. Although the quake caused no damages or injuries were reported, it lasted for more than 30 seconds and caused panic in Wellington with several people in offices and homes getting under their tables for cover.

Rescue teams working through the night pulled 45 people from collapsed buildings, Turkey's disaster authority said on Sunday, as the death toll from a powerful earthquake in the country's east rose to 35. Rescuers operating in sub-zero temperatures used drills, mechanical diggers and their bare hands to continue the search for survivors at three sites in Elazig province, where the magnitude 6.8 quake struck on Friday evening.

It killed 31 people there and four in the neighbouring province of Malatya, and was followed by more than 700 aftershocks, Disaster and Emergency Authority AFAD said on Sunday. More than 1,600 sustained injuries. Broadcast footage showed a 35-year-old woman and her infant daughter emerging from rubble in the Mustafa Pasa district of Elazig, some 550 km (340 miles) east of the capital Ankara.

Rescuers who heard their screams took several hours to reach them in temperatures as low as -4 degrees Celsius (24.8°F), state media said. The woman's husband was among those who died. AFAD said search and rescue operations were still underway at three different sites in Elazig.

Other provinces sent thousands of emergency workers to support rescue efforts, which were also supplemented by hundreds of volunteers, officials said. Tents, beds and blankets were provided to shelter those displaced by the quake. AFAD urged residents not to return to damaged buildings because of the potential risk of collapse. It said officials had identified 645 heavily damaged and 76 collapsed buildings in the two provinces.

President Tayyip Erdogan said steel-framed houses would be rapidly built in the region to provide housing for displaced residents. Speaking on Saturday during a visit to Elazig and Malatya, he called the quake a test for Turkey.

The country has a history of powerful earthquakes. More than 17,000 people were killed in August 1999 when a 7.6 magnitude quake struck Izmit, a city southeast of Istanbul. In 2011 a quake in the eastern city of Van killed more than 500.

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake on Wednesday rattled an area less than 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant near the country's Gulf coast, a US monitor said.

The quake, which had a depth of 10 kilometers, struck 17 kilometers south-southeast of Borazjan city at 6:49 am (0319 GMT), the US Geological Survey said on its website.

State news agency IRNA said the earthquake was felt in Bushehr, site of the country's sole nuclear power plant.

So far, there were no reports of any deaths or damage, IRNA said, citing Jahangir Dehghani, the head of Bushehr's crisis management center.

The latest quake comes exactly a fortnight after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit the same area, without causing any casualties or major damage.

The Bushehr plant, which produces 1,000 megawatts of power, was completed by Russia after years of delay and officially handed over in September 2013.

In 2016, Russian and Iranian firms began building two additional 1,000-megawatt reactors at Bushehr. Their construction was expected to take 10 years.
