<p>During his first year of presidency, Joe Biden plans to bring together the democracies of the world by hosting a global Summit for Democracy to "renew the spirit and shared purpose" of the nations of the Free World, according to a policy paper issued by his campaign during the US presidential election.</p>

<p>India, being the world's largest democracy, is likely to play an important role in such a summit.</p>

<p>Biden defeated incumbent President Donald Trump in the bitterly-fought presidential election that attracted a record number of Americans to cast their votes.</p>

<p>"During his first year in office, President Biden will bring together the world''s democracies to strengthen our democratic institutions, honestly confront the challenge of nations that are backsliding, and forge a common agenda to address threats to our common values," according to the policy document issued by his campaign.</p>

<p>"President Biden will organise and host a global Summit for Democracy to renew the spirit and shared purpose of the nations of the Free World," it said.</p>

<p>The Summit will prioritise results by galvanising significant new country commitments in three areas: (1) fighting corruption; (2) defending against authoritarianism, including election security; (3) advancing human rights in their own nations and abroad, it said.</p>

<p>The proposed Summit will include civil society organisations from around the world that stand on the frontlines in defense of our democracies. Details of the summit would be worked after early next year, it said.</p>

<p>It will also issue a Call to Action for the private sector, including technology corporations and social media giants, to make their own commitments, recognising their responsibilities and their overwhelming interest in preserving open, democratic societies and protecting free speech, the Biden Campaign said.</p>

<p>"For example, technology companies-which benefit from the fruits of democracy- should make concrete pledges for how they can ensure their algorithms and platforms are not empowering the surveillance state, facilitating repression in China and elsewhere, spreading hate, spurring people to violence, and remaining susceptible to misuse," said the policy document.</p>

<p>As an example of the concrete action our world needs, Joe Biden served as a founding member of a Trans-Atlantic Commission on Election Integrity-to fight back against Russia's attacks on Western democracies, the policy document pointed out.</p>

<p>The Commission asked politicians across Europe to sign a pledge committing to transparency in campaign finance and to reject the use of fabricated or hacked material.</p>

<p>"Now that he is a candidate for office, Biden has signed that pledge and is calling on every person running for president to do the same," it said.</p>

<p>Before hosting the global summit for Democracy, the Biden Administration plans to take a host of steps to strengthen democracy in the country.</p>

<p>Prominent among them include reforming the criminal justice system to eliminate inequitable disparities; restore the Voting Rights Act; and seek greater transparency in the campaign finance system so money, foreign and domestic, won't pollute politics.</p>

<p>The Biden administration also plans to immediately end the horrific practice of separating families at the border and holding immigrant children in for-profit prisons.</p>

<p>"Abandoning our deepest-held values does nothing to increase security at our border-and everything to diminish our standing in the world. At the same time, as president, Biden will establish sensible policies that improve screening procedures at our legal ports of entry and make smart investments in border technology, in cooperation with Canada and Mexico," it said.</p>

<p>"Terminate the travel ban against people from Muslim-majority countries. Reverse Trump's detrimental asylum policies and raise our target for refugee admissions to a level commensurate with our responsibility and unprecedented global need," the policy document said.</p>

<p>The Biden Administration also plans to restore a commitment to science and truth in government, including bringing back the words "climate change"; and return the phrase "nation of immigrants" to the mission statement of its Citizenship and Immigration Services.</p>

<p>"She has always been a nice and caring child. She was fond of everybody. I am very happy and thrilled that she has scripted history. We all are very happy," she told WION, in an exclusive conversation,&nbsp;on Sunday.</p>

<p>Harris has always been vocal about the kind of impact her mother's upbringing had had on her. Dr Gopalan too sees the same streak of rebellion she saw in her sister, Shyamala.</p>

<p>"My sister was a rebel. At the age of 18, she applied for a scholarship at Berkeley [University] without telling anyone. It was only after she got a full paid scholarship that she told our parents. She was a strict mother; she taught Kamala values. She taught her to fight for everything. I see the same streak of rebellion in Kamala. Shyamala would have been very happy to see Kamala rise to this position. Unfortunately, she died very young," she said, adding, "I was in California when Kamala had decided to contest for the post of DA. I knew then she wanted to get somewhere. She then became an attorney general, then a senator, and now this [vice president-elect]."</p>

<p>Harris has shown herself to be a team player, taking on a lower-profile role and holding virtual and in-person political events that sometimes drew little news coverage, while often speaking in terms of what Biden would do for the country if elected and making an impassioned case against Trump.</p>

<p>Kamala is a diamond, her aunt told WION.</p>

<p>"When she became a senator, I went to her and told her she was a diamond in the family. And she said to me, 'Chitti, I am not a diamond in the family. I am a diamond among diamonds,'" Dr Gopalan said.</p>

<p>Kamala Harris' maternal grandfather also had a major impact on how she perceived ambition.</p>

<p>"My father was a wonderful man. In 1958, he could send his 18-year-old daughter to America -- which no South Indian father would think of doing," Dr Gopalan told WION.</p>

<p>WILMINGTON, Mass. — Nick Rocco went into Election Day amped up. A 26-year-old hair stylist, he spent the past few months campaigning for President Donald Trump, taking special satisfaction in offending Biden supporters.</p>

<p>It was still summer when he got kicked off his town’s community Facebook page for his pugnacious pro-Trump posts. When someone stole the Trump sign from his yard, he replaced it with half a dozen new ones, one featuring an expletive.</p>

<p>At his wedding last month, guests sauntered out in oversize Donald and Melania masks, and he savored the discomfort of his wife’s Democratic relatives.</p>

<p>“The thing is, we don’t care,” Rocco said. He is looking forward to many years of Trump presidencies. “I hope Don, Ivanka and Eric all run eventually,” he said last week.</p>

So it was as easy to imagine Republicans surviving in a changing country by simply becoming more populist on economic issues as it was to imagine them moving in the more libertarian direction favored by the party’s donors and consultants.</p>

<p>After two national elections with Donald Trump at the top of the ticket, those dissenters can claim a lot of vindication. For the second presidential cycle in a row, notwithstanding plague, economic crisis and his own immense faults, Trump was a competitive candidate with a coalition that was more blue-collar and&nbsp;nonwhite than the Republican vote in 2012. Relative to four years ago, he turned out even more whites without college degrees in many states (even as his share of the white working class may have slipped a little bit overall) and increased his support from African Americans and in heavily Hispanic areas — not just in the Cuban parts of Florida, but in regions as different as southern Texas and Lawrence, Massachusetts.</p>

<p>In those trends, you can see the foundation of a possible after-Trump conservative majority that is multiethnic and middle class and populist, an expansive coalition rather than a white and aging rump. And the competitiveness of the existing Trump coalition, the fact that he wasn’t simply routed as the polls had predicted and his party came through the election in better-than-expected shape, makes it less likely that his would-be successors will try to rewind the clock to 2012. Instead, they will promise to reassemble his populist coalition as a first step, rather than trying to rebuild around the now-Democratic-trending mass upper class.</p>

<p>But if Trump’s coalition was competitive, Trump himself was defeated, no less than Romney in 2012. So the question for Republican politicians auditioning to be Trumpists after Trump is whether they actually have a plan to (with apologies to President-elect Joe Biden) build back bigger, to make the right-populist coalition the majority it could be rather than the strong minority it is.</p>

<p>The optimist’s take is that the way to do this is clear: Trump was at his most unpopular when he behaved grotesquely and ceded policymaking to the Republican old guard, so his would-be successors need to act less like tin-pot tyrants, eschew the ranting and the insults, and also make good on some of the policy promises Trump left by the wayside. A populism 2.0 that doesn’t alienate as many people with its rhetoric, that promises more support for families and domestic industry, that accepts universal health care and attacks monopolies and keeps low-skilled immigration low, all while confronting China and avoiding Middle East entanglements and fighting elite progressivism tooth and nail — there’s your new Republican majority.</p>

<p>But there are other possibilities. One is that some of the voters who turned out for the GOP in the last two presidential cycles were drawn in by Trump’s celebrity charisma as much as by any of his policy arguments — that if he alienated suburban women with his finger-in-your-eye behavior, it also helped elevate his appeal with the country’s disaffected blocs. In which case you can’t just shave off the rough edges and expect a different politician to claim the same support. Rural white voters in Wisconsin who felt forgotten by both parties, or Latino men around Miami alienated by wokeness, or for that matter the rebellious grassroots conservatives who backed Trump’s 2016 primary campaign — do any of them respond the same way to a Republican who has picked up the language of populism but comes across as a stuffed shirt rather than a tough guy, a nerd rather than a tycoon, a politician rather than a star?</p>

<p>Then even if it were possible for another Republican to claim and expand his coalition, it’s not clear that Trump himself will let that happen. For one thing, he might run again, and he will certainly keep that possibility open — which means all his would-be successors will need to jockey for his favor, or at least avoid blasts of wrath from Mar-a-Lago. It’s always been clear that Trump would nurture a stab-in-the-back narrative should he lose; now that we know that the race was genuinely close in several key states, his stolen-election narrative may be potent enough to push conservatism toward the fever swamps and away from a constructive populism, a Trumpism that can win.</p>

<p>So Trump will exit the presidency with a complicated and uncertain legacy — as both the man who opened the way to a possible populist majority, and (for the next four years, at least) one of the biggest potential obstacles for Republicans who want to tread that path.</p>

A populism 2.0 that doesn’t alienate as many people with its rhetoric, that promises more support for families and domestic industry, that accepts universal health care and attacks monopolies and keeps low-skilled immigration low, all while confronting China and avoiding Middle East entanglements and fighting elite progressivism tooth and nail — there’s your new Republican majority. But there are other possibilities. One is that some of the voters who turned out for the GOP in the last two presidential cycles were drawn in by Trump’s celebrity charisma as much as by any of his policy arguments — that if he alienated suburban women with his finger-in-your-eye behavior, it also helped elevate his appeal with the country’s disaffected blocs. In which case you can’t just shave off the rough edges and expect a different politician to claim the same support. Rural white voters in Wisconsin who felt forgotten by both parties, or Latino men around Miami alienated by wokeness, or for that matter the rebellious grassroots conservatives who backed Trump’s 2016 primary campaign — do any of them respond the same way to a Republican who has picked up the language of populism but comes across as a stuffed shirt rather than a tough guy, a nerd rather than a tycoon, a politician rather than a star? Then even if it were possible for another Republican to claim and expand his coalition, it’s not clear that Trump himself will let that happen. For one thing, he might run again, and he will certainly keep that possibility open — which means all his would-be successors will need to jockey for his favor, or at least avoid blasts of wrath from Mar-a-Lago. It’s always been clear that Trump would nurture a stab-in-the-back narrative should he lose; now that we know that the race was genuinely close in several key states, his stolen-election narrative may be potent enough to push conservatism toward the fever swamps and away from a constructive populism, a Trumpism that can win. So Trump will exit the presidency with a complicated and uncertain legacy — as both the man who opened the way to a possible populist majority, and (for the next four years, at least) one of the biggest potential obstacles for Republicans who want to tread that path.
