FBI Director&nbsp;Christopher&nbsp;Wray&nbsp;announced on Wednesday (Dec 11) that he will resign in January before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

"After weeks of careful thought, I've decided the right thing for the bureau&nbsp;is for me to serve until the end of the current administration in January and then step down,"&nbsp;Wray&nbsp;told bureau employees in remarks released by the FBI.

Trump, who is to be sworn in as president on January 20, has announced the nomination of staunch loyalist Kash Patel to replace&nbsp;Wray&nbsp;as the head of the top US law enforcement agency and he welcomed the FBI chief's resignation.

Wray&nbsp;was named by Trump in 2017 to head the 38,000-strong Federal Bureau of Intelligence but the incoming president has since soured on his choice.

Wray&nbsp;had three more years remaining in his 10-year term as FBI director but faced potentially being fired by Trump.

"The resignation of&nbsp;Christopher&nbsp;Wray&nbsp;is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponisation of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

As many as eight rounds were fired from an AR-style rifle by the shooter who was hidden on a rooftop close to the venue. The snipers in Trump's Secret Service soon killed the shooter and the Republican leader was escorted from the rally.&nbsp;

As he was taking off stage, Trump mouthed "fight" and pumped his fist. In a statement, Trump's Secret Service later confirmed that the then-Republican presidential candidate "is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility".

<h2>Why did the shooter shoot Trump?</h2>

The FBI on July 14 identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. He lived in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania and was believed to have acted alone.

The Crooks' father&nbsp;had bought the rifle which was used by him to shoot the Republican leader. He did not have any criminal record.&nbsp;As per the FBI, there was "no indication of any mental health issues" regarding Crooks.

After the incident, the FBI found that a social media account "believed to be associated with the shooter" had around 700 comments from 2019 to 2020.&nbsp;

As per an account of Gab&nbsp;CEO Andrew Torba, the FBI had requested posts from his platform which were "pro-Biden's immigration policy".&nbsp;

Meanwhile, FBI deputy director&nbsp;Paul Abbate, in a public statement, said that the activity of Crooks on social media was&nbsp;antisemitic, and extreme, espousing&nbsp;political violence and anti-immigrant.&nbsp;

However, the police were not able to identify the shooter's motive.&nbsp;

Notre Dame Cathedral is about to reopen to the world on Saturday (Dec 7), five years after it was burnt in a devastating fire in 2019. Global leaders have arrived ahead of the opening ceremony, and have been holding meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the event.&nbsp;

The iconic 12th-century cathedral's reopening will be witnessed by world leaders, including United States President-elect Donald Trump, Prince of Wales, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US First Lady Jill Biden, and the King and Queen of Belgium.&nbsp;

After holding a trilateral meeting with Trump and Zelensky, Macron has now arrived at Notre Dame.&nbsp;

As he arrived, thousands of people were seen cheering for him outside the cathedral.

<h2>The 2019 incident</h2>

Notre Dame was burnt in April 2019, damaging the cathedral's roof and its Gothic spire. The blaze also&nbsp;left behind rubble and debris.&nbsp;

Jean-Louis Georgelin, a former French army general, was in charge of the project for managing the restoration work with the €846 million worth of funds&nbsp;raised. He died in August 2023 and was succeeded by civil servant Philippe Jost.&nbsp;

Nearly 2,000 tradespeople worked on reconstructing the cathedral.&nbsp;

Jean-Louis Georgelin, a former French army general, was in charge of the project for managing the restoration work with the €846 million worth of funds raised. Germany has been one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine and a military backer in its resistance to the Russian invasion that crossed 1,000 days.

Germany is second number after the US in providing military aid to Ukraine.

Scholz has drawn immense criticism in recent weeks for directly talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but still vowed that his country will continue supporting Ukraine to "the best of its ability".&nbsp;

"My main principle remains the same: nothing must be decided behind the backs of the Ukrainian people," he said in the Saturday interview. "What is important is that the killing ends soon and that Ukraine's independence and sovereignty are guaranteed."&nbsp;
