US House Foreign Affairs Committee chairperson Michael McCaul on Tuesday (Dec 17) claimed that the unidentified drones recently spotted over New Jersey and New York are "spy drones" from China.
McCaul's claim comes after the Biden administration downplayed the sightings as largely commercial in nature.

McCaul, the House representative for Texas's 10th congressional district shared his suspicions after meeting with NASA Administrator Bill Nelson who noted drone activity over military bases, New York Post said in a report.  
"We want answers, but the response I’m getting is we don't know whose drones these are," said McCaul, adding, "I would not think those are friendly. I would think those are adversarial."

"We need to identify who is behind these drones," he stressed.

"I believe they’re spy drones and the PRC and communist China is very good at this stuff," he alleged.
He criticised the government for its lack of clear answers, calling the situation "very disturbing."
"We're not getting answers and I think it’s because our government does not know who is behind them and that is very disturbing to me," he stated.

The drones have been observed in sensitive locations, including New Jersey's Picatinny Arsenal, Naval Weapons Station Earle, and Stewart International Airport in New York, which was temporarily forced to close on Sunday (Dec 15)  due to an unidentified aircraft.  
Federal agencies, including the FBI, FAA, Pentagon, and Department of Homeland Security, issued a joint statement Monday (Dec 16) in which they attributed the sightings to "a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones".  
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas supported this view while White House spokesperson John Kirby reported that authorities "have not been able to, and neither have state and local law enforcement authorities, corroborate any of the reported visual sightings".

Matt Gaetz, the former nominee of US President-elect Donald Trump for leading the justice department, acknowledged that he had "womanised, drank and smoked" in the past. His comment came afterreports emerged that the House ethics committee would release an investigation into the sex crime allegations against him.&nbsp;

The former congressman took to X and wrote, "The Biden/Garland DOJ spent years reviewing allegations that I committed various crimes. I was charged with nothing: FULLY EXONERATED. Not even a campaign finance violation. And the people investigating me hated me."

"Then, the very ‘witnesses’ DOJ deemed not credible were assembled by House Ethics to repeat their claims absent any cross-examination or challenge from me or my attorneys. I’ve had no chance to ever confront any accusers. I’ve never been charged. I’ve never been sued," he added.&nbsp;

Gatez further said that in his "single days", he used to send funds to women he dated and also to those he did not, but they asked for money.&nbsp;

Gaetz's nomination by Trump in November triggered a political storm in the US as he faces a nearly three-year Justice Department investigation into sex trafficking allegations involving a 17-year-old girl. He denies the allegations and has not faced criminal charges.

However, China's toolkit as well as its famous ability to show some shrewd gestures make it more complicated.

What we can expect is a slow-grinding set of adjustments after an initial round of fireworks that would indicate where the game is going.

We also need to do some trade calculations specific to industries. It is all up in the air. Trump, being a real estate tycoon more than a militarist nationalist, is likely to use power to cut better deals than take wounds on the economy he is steering.

I do think one factor that is not being discussed loudly but needs to be is the strange business of high technology that actually gives the US a pivotal economic strength.

My assessment is that industries such as computers, software, the Internet, and the emerging spectre of artificial intelligence cannot be subject to Trump's simplistic approach. Imagine Trump cracking down on the manufacturing industry of a country but instead facing retaliation that could hurt Google, Microsoft, Netflix, Facebook, or Amazon!

The President-elect has said he would sign an executive order imposing a 25 per cent tariff on all Mexican and Canadian imports and an extra 10 per cent on Chinese goods as soon as he takes over at the White House in January. But his swipes at Mexico and Canada are perhaps less about the US trade deficit and more about illegal immigration.

That is a classic apple-and-orange conflict in which Trump may want to extract security-linked gains in exchange for elbow room in trade. But there are also aspects linked to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which is where the Trump tariffs might hurt Mexico and Canada.

India is a potential gainer with a "China Plus One" strategy under which the US as an importer would systematically reduce the Chinese grip, but this would be a lot slower as India needs to build capacities and prove its capabilities on a large scale in which China is decidedly a leader of sorts.

US President-elect Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the Des Moines Register newspaper and its top pollster, court documents showed, the day after he stepped up his legal threats against news outlets and said he would also consider suing social media influencers and others for defamation.
The lawsuit filed Monday night in Polk County seeks "accountability for brazen election interference committed by" the newspaper and pollster J. Ann Selzer over its poll published on Nov. 2. That poll showed Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris leading Trump by 13 percentage points in Iowa.
"Selzer’s polling 'miss' was not an astonishing coincidence—it was intentional," the lawsuit said. "As President Trump observed: 'She knew exactly what she was doing'."
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and an order barring the Des Moines Register from engaging in "ongoing deceptive and misleading acts and practices" related to polling.
Gannett, parent company of the Des Moines Register, is also named in the suit. A Gannett representative said the organisation stands by its reporting and believes the suit is without merit.
In his remarks to reporters on Monday, Trump threatened to sue the Des Moines Register over the poll. "In my opinion, it was fraud and it was election interference," Trump said.

Some legal experts say Trump's comments and legal actions risk chilling news coverage of the incoming administration even if legal protections for journalists are for now robust.
“There is some serious concern that the erosion of legal protections could lead to less aggressive news coverage,” said Syracuse University communications professor Roy Gutterman.
He pointed to the ABC settlement as a possible example of a news organization fearing retribution from the Trump administration, noting that the high cost of litigation could have also influenced the network’s decision.
On Dec. 14, Walt Disney-owned ABC News agreed to give $15 million to Trump’s presidential library to settle a lawsuit over comments that anchor George Stephanopoulos made on air.
The comments involved the civil cases brought against Trump by writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of sexually assaulting her at a New York department store in the 1990s.
Stephanopoulos said Trump was found liable for rape, but a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse. New York law distinguishes the two offenses.
Trump is appealing the jury verdict in that case and a judge's ruling in a related lawsuit brought by Carroll.
An ABC News spokesperson said in a statement that the network was pleased that the parties reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit.
As part of the settlement, ABC agreed to publish an editor's note stating that the network and Stephanopoulos "regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump" made during the interview in question.
On Monday, Trump also mentioned his lawsuit against CBS News over an interview with Harris that aired on its "60 Minutes" news programme in October. The lawsuit, which seeks $1 billion in damages, claimed that the interview had been deceptively edited.
CBS has said the suit is "completely without merit" and has asked a judge to dismiss the case.

Even if lawsuits by Trump were to fail, they could create headaches for news organizations by publicly revealing potentially embarrassing internal communications and exposing journalists and executives to depositions.
In the ABC lawsuit, some legal experts said the network could have prevailed because Stephanopoulos' comments appeared to be an innocent mistake and not the type of reckless disregard that Trump would have to prove.
A judge denied ABC's motion to dismiss the case in July, rejecting the network's claim that it was broadly protected under Florida laws shielding news organizations from liability for accurate reporting on information received from government officials.
That order only concerned several initial legal questions and did not mean Trump would have ultimately won.

The team also recommends waiving environmental reviews to expedite federally funded EV infrastructure projects and expanding export restrictions on battery technology.

Emissions standards would be rolled back to 2019 levels, effectively permitting approximately 25% more emissions per vehicle mile and reducing average fuel economy standards by around 15%.
