Republican mega-donor Bernie Marcus said on Tuesday he would likely still give money to Donald Trump's 2024 presidential bid if the former president was convicted of a crime - but the billionaire does not plan to be one of his biggest financial backers.

Marcus, a co-founder of home improvement retailer the Home Depot (HD.N), announced earlier this month that he was supporting Trump, the runaway frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination contest that kicks off on Jan. 15 in Iowa.

Trump faces four criminal cases, including state and federal charges stemming from his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump, 77, denies any wrongdoing and has pleaded not guilty in all four cases. The unprecedented legal turmoil has prompted questions about what would happen to Trump's campaign if he was convicted or jailed.

Asked in an interview with Reuters whether he would still support Trump if he were convicted, Marcus replied, "I think so. Because I think it's all trumped up."

Marcus, 94, who supported Trump's White House runs in 2016 and 2020, said he had spoken to the former president recently. "I never discussed his legal fees or his legal problems," Marcus said, adding that Trump was "very happy" about his support.

Marcus and his wife Billi Wilma Marcus were the seventh-largest individual Republican donors in the 2020 election cycle, giving nearly $25 million to Republican campaigns, according to OpenSecrets, a nonprofit group that tracks money in politics. Business magazine Forbes estimates Marcus' net worth at around $8.8 billion.

Marcus would not be drawn into specifics of his donations this time around, saying only he would support Trump in the primary and in the general election against Biden in November 2024, should Trump be the nominee. However, Marcus cautioned he would not be a major financial supporter.

"Of course, I'm going to support him to some extent, but I'm not one of his big givers, that's for sure," Marcus said.

The billionaire said he also liked Republican presidential candidates Nikki Haley, a former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina governor, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, but did not think they could beat Trump in the nominating contest.

Marcus said he thought Trump was a "fixer" who would be beneficial to the U.S. economy and strong on Middle East foreign policy.

Former United States President Donald Trump's ex-lawyer on Thursday (Oct 19) pleaded guilty to assisting Trump's efforts to rescind his election defeat in the state of Georgia.

The lawyer, Sidney Powell, pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with performance of election duties, a misdemeanour charge. She also agreed to testify against Trump and the other 16 co-defendants in the case if prosecutors ask her to.

This is one of the four concurrent criminal cases that the former United States president is facing.

Powell's plea came days before she was scheduled to appear in the court for trial, beginning on Monday (Oct 23) on charges including racketeering and conspiracy to commit election fraud.

She admitted to conspiring to unlawfully gain access to secure election machines in January 2021, in rural Coffee County in southeastern Georgia. The plea agreement calls for her to be sentenced to six years of probation.

Following the 2020 presidential elections, Powell represented Trump and also helped disseminate false claims that the election had been tainted by an overall voter scam.

She also threatened to "release the Kraken," a mythological sea monster.

As per news agency Reuters reports, the prosecutor said that Powell and other co-defendants fiddled with electronic ballot markers and accessed data belonging to Dominion Voting Systems, the voting machine company that Powell and other Trump allies falsely claimed helped rig the election against Trump.

Powell was scheduled to be tried alongside Kenneth Chesebro, another lawyer who assisted Trump following the election.

Trump's former lawyer Sidney Powell pleads guilty, agrees to testify in Georgia case

In a high-stakes GOP debate held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, on Wednesday (Sept 28, local time), former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie delivered a humorous yet pointed nickname for former President Donald Trump due to his absence from the debate stage: "Donald duck."

This clever quip was just one of many attacks unleashed by Christie, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former Vice President Mike Pence against Trump during the event. Notably, Trump is the clear front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.

This second GOP debate took on a heightened sense of urgency as Trump sought to divert attention from the other candidates by hosting a competing event in the Detroit area, where autoworkers were engaged in a strike.

Christie's direct address to Trump

Christie, in response to a question about crime, seized the moment to address Trump directly, stating, "Donald Trump should be here to answer for that, but he's not."

He confronted Trump's absence and remarked, "You're not here tonight, not because of polls or indictments, but because you're afraid to be on this stage defending your record. You're avoiding these challenges. And let me tell you what's going to happen if you continue to do so: We won't refer to you as Donald Trump anymore; we're going to call you Donald duck."

Shift in debate dynamics

In contrast to the first debate where Trump was rarely mentioned and faced minimal attacks, this debate marked a notable shift. The candidates directed their criticism towards Trump in three significant ways:

Absence critique: Christie and DeSantis called out Trump for not participating in the debate.

National debt: Both Christie and DeSantis highlighted the significant expansion of the national debt during Trump's tenure in the White House.

Executive powers: Pence offered a critique of Trump's plans to expand executive powers if he were to secure a second term.

Christie highlighted Trump's nonattendance in another response, where he compared President Biden "hiding in his basement" to Trump "hiding behind the walls of his golf clubs."

DeSantis echoed Christie's sentiments, asserting that both Biden and Trump were "missing in action." Furthermore, both Christie and DeSantis took aim at the Trump administration for its contribution to the significant national debt increase of $7.8 trillion during Trump's presidency.

'Donald duck' and other Trump zingers that stole the GOP debate spotlight

A judge in Georgia on Wednesday (September 6) said that he was “very sceptical” about former US president Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants going through a trial together next month in a criminal case in which they stand accused of conspiring to reverse the presidential election results in 2020.

The prosecutors were granted 10 days by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee to explain how they “could possibly keep these defendants together” with a number of outstanding legal questions and the deadline of speedy trial set next month for defendants who have asked for one.

The remarks that were made during a hearing of the case in Atlanta emphasised the challenge of shepherding multiple people to trial as soon as October 23.

Trial likely to stretch for four months

The prosecutors in the Georgia racketeering case said that the trial is likely to take four months and will include approximately 150 witnesses.

"So the other things to keep in mind is this is going to be a case with a lot of pretrial motions. And again, I don't know how many hearings we're going to need to have to sort through all of those. But if we compress our timeline to 40-something days, our ability to even be able to really weigh those and think through these issues again, it just seems a bit unrealistic to think that we can handle all 19 in 40-something days. That's that's my initial reaction,” agreed Judge McAfee.

No date has been set for the trial yet, although prosecutors have been hoping to start on October 23. Any wrongdoing has been denied by the former president and his co-defendants, who have pleaded not guilty.

State prosecutor Nathan Wade said in court on Wednesday that the estimated timeline has not included jury selection which is likely to add months to the process.

Judge Scott McAfee said that he plans to finalise questions regarding the schedule of the trial by "either the end of this week or early next week". In the case, all 19 co-defendants have pleaded not guilty and appealed for their right to in-person arraignments.

During the court session on Wednesday, Judge McAfee also heard arguments on whether there is a possibility of a few defendants severing their cases from the wider racketeering.

Attorneys for Kenneth Chesebro looked for ways to decrease the counts against him, as did attorneys for former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell, who has appealed for a speedy trial. The two will now go on trial together on October 23 after a motion to sever their cases from one another was denied by Judge McAfee.

The judge, in the court, said that he does not believe that "the severance for Mr Cheseboro or Ms Powell is necessary to achieve a fair determination of the guilt or innocence for either defendant in this case".

Trump Georgia election case: Judge 'very skeptical' of trying all defendants together

A report by the Times has shed light on former US President Donald Trump’s plans to rope in a female candidate for vice presidency as his running-mate should he land the 2024 Republican nomination. Trump parted ways with his former Vice President Mike Pence after he rejected his bid to delegitimise swing states that voted for his opponent Joe Biden.

For over the last few years, Trump and his supporters have sporadically vilified Pence, who has now launched his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. However, his campaign is languishing in third spot behind Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Who could be Trump’s female running-mate?

The Times report suggested three names who Trump could partner with -- Marjorie Taylor Greene, Elise Stefanik and Kristi Noem. Of these three, both Greene and Stefanik are fierce pro-MAGA stalwarts. Just last month, they introduced measures into the house attempting to expunge both of Trump’s impeachments.

However, experts are of the opinion they are too attached to the MAGA campaign that they may further end up ostracising a neutral electorate. On the other hand, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is being hailed as the most appealing to the general electorate. She is not just a staunch Trump loyalist but also has administrative experience as a governor since 2019. Much to the delight of Trump and his supporters, she has thrown her weight behind several right-wing measures.

Why Trump wants to have a female running-mate?

By choosing a female running-mate, Trump wants to improve his appeal among undecided young female voters. The 2020 election analysis showed that he performed poorly among women voters. He lagged far behind the support gathered by Joe Biden. Although his support among women voters is significantly higher this time—44 per cent against 39 per cent last year—he still lags behind Biden.

Trump looking for female running mate to extend appeal to women voters

Aileen Cannon, a federal judge appointed by former President Donald Trump, has been assigned to oversee a new federal criminal case against him in Miami pertaining to classified documents, as per media reports. Cannon gained public attention when she presided over court proceedings involving the FBI's search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

The Florida district judge Cannon was assigned to preside over the case involving Donald Trump's classified documents where she ruled in favor of Trump during an earlier hearing last year. She was appointed to the federal bench by the former president three years ago.

However, Cannon faced criticism from an appeals court panel for granting Trump's request to have an independent special master review the documents. This decision resulted in a slowdown of the justice department's investigation and raised concerns about Cannon's impartiality.

Confirmation and controversy

Trump nominated Aileen Cannon for the federal bench in May 2020, and she was confirmed by the Senate with a vote of 56-21 shortly after the presidential election. Prior to this high-profile case, Cannon had stayed relatively out of the national spotlight.

Her decision to appoint a third-party "special master" to oversee the review of evidence in classified case was later overturned by a conservative panel of judges on the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

Professional background

Before her appointment, Cannon served as an assistant US attorney in Florida, working in the Major Crimes Division and as an appellate attorney. She also clerked for a federal judge after graduating from the University of Michigan Law School and practiced law at a firm in Washington, DC. During her career, she handled various cases, including those related to government investigations.

Role in the new case

If she remains on this new case, Cannon will have significant authority to control the timing and evidence presented, as well as review the Justice Department's legal theory.

This decision resulted in a slowdown of the justice department's investigation and raised concerns about Cannon's impartiality. Confirmation and controversy Trump nominated Aileen Cannon for the federal bench in May 2020, and she was confirmed by the Senate with a vote of 56-21 shortly after the presidential election. Prior to this high-profile case, Cannon had stayed relatively out of the national spotlight. She also clerked for a federal judge after graduating from the University of Michigan Law School and practiced law at a firm in Washington, DC. During her career, she handled various cases, including those related to government investigations. Who is Aileen Cannon? Trump-appointed judge in classified documents case

Former United States president Donald Trump is a "habitual liar" and sexual abuser who destroyed E. Jean Carroll’s reputation to protect his own after the famous columnist accused him of rape, a jury in New York heard on Monday (May 8). Carroll, 79, filed a lawsuit last year against Trump claiming that he raped her dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in 1996 and then defamed her by denying it happened.

In the closing arguments in Carroll's civil lawsuit for batter and defamation on Monday, her lawyer Roberta Kaplan told that they could believe the evidence of 10 witnesses for her client or Trump who declined to testify, according to a report by The Guardian.

Kaplan said Trump's defence to the alleged rape was that everyone else is “lying about everything”.

“In order to find for him you have to find that Donald Trump, the nonstop liar, is the only one in this court telling the truth,” Kaplan added, The Guardian reported.

However, the former president's lawyer Joe Tacopina told the Jury that by her own admission, large parts of Carroll's account were “unbelievable” and “remarkable”. Tacopina said the whole story was an unbelievable work of fiction.

The jury is expected to begin considering its verdict in the case on Tuesday, The Guardian reported. During the closing arguments on Monday, Caroll's lawyer Kaplan told the jury that Trump must face justice, pointing out that no one, even a former president was above the law.

The lawyer further said the evidence showed that Carroll was not a random victim of an attack by Trump but one of a series of women who fell victim to his “modus operandi” of charming and then assaulting them.

Meanwhile, Trump's lawyer Tacopina said that emails sent by one of the women, Carol Martin, who testified that E. Jean Carroll told her about the alleged rape after days, was evidence of the conspiracy. In one of the messages, Martin criticised the former president and said “As soon as we’re both well enuf [sic] to scheme, we must do our patriotic duty again”.

Carroll’s lawyers said that Martin would not have written the messages if she was part of a conspiracy or other messages in which she criticised the columnist for going public with the accusation after keeping quiet for more than two decades.

However, Joe Tacopina accused Carroll of “exploiting the pain and suffering” of real victims of sexual abuse to bring a politically motivated case against Trump. He accused her of abusing the system by bringing a false claim. The lawyer also said it did not matter that Trump did not testify because Carroll’s own words “tore apart her story”.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Trump's competitors were surprised when they showed up to the golf course on Sunday (January 22) only to find out that he claimed a five-point lead. The report said that the former president was claiming that an earlier round would count for his score in lieu of him having missed the first round of the tournament.

Trump told the tournament organisers that he played a strong round on the course Thursday (January 19), two days before the tournament started, and decided that would count as his Saturday score for the championship. The Daily Mail report also said that Thursday's round gave him a score of 40 using the Modified Stableford method. While serving as president, Donald Trump was known for spending many weekends at his golf courses. At multiple points, he golfed more than former President Barack Obama did during his time in office, a report by Business Insider on Wednesday said.

In recent news, social media giant Meta announced that Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts would be reinstated, two years after he was banned over the Capitol Hill riot.

In a statement, Meta's president of global affairs Nick Clegg said, "We will be reinstating Mr Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks." Clegg added that the move would come with "new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses." Clegg also pointed out that going forward, Trump could be suspended for up to two years for each violation of platform policies.

Trump declares himself winner at his golf tournament despite missing first round: Report

Former United States President Donald Trump mistook his sexual assault accuser E. Jean Carroll for his ex-wife Marla Maples in testimony for her suit against him. Trump was married to Maples his second wife, from 1993 to 1999. He mistook Carroll for his ex-wife during a deposition at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida on October 19 last year.

Excerpts of the deposition, which were released on Tuesday (January 17), saw Trump potentially undermining one of his defences against Carroll's allegation that he raped her in the changing room of a New York department store in the mid-1990s.

Carroll, who is a journalist and an author, accused Trump of sexual assault and defamation after the former President said in an interview with "The Hill" in 2019 that she was lying and simply trying to market her book, news agency AFP reported on Thursday.

During the October 19 deposition, Trump was asked about the alleged incident to which he replied, "Physically she's not my type, and now that I've gotten indirectly to hear things about her, she wouldn't be my type in any way, shape, or form."

However, when Trump was shown a photograph of himself with Carroll and others at a reception in the 1990s. Trump replied, "That's Marla, that's my wife," before being corrected by his lawyer.

Initially, E. Jean Carroll had not gone public with the allegations of the incident. But in 2019, she divulged the details in her book. In October last year, Trump took to social media to call her story "a hoax and a lie" and her book "a complete scam." A month later, after a New York law designed to protect sexual assault victims decades after the crime took place came into effect, Carroll expanded her case by suing him for assault, the AFP report added.

In October last year, the court had taken depositions from both parties in the defamation case and the trial would now open on April 10. The report pointed out that Trump could be protected in the case as he made the initial statements against Carroll while he was serving as President.

Morning Brief: Elon Musk loses $200 billion, China's factory activity declines, and more

Former US President Donald Trump on Saturday called for the Constitution's termination so that the 2020 election can be overturned and he can be reinstated back to power.

In a post on the social network Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”

He further accused “Big Tech” of closely working with Democrats. He added, “Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!”

The post on the social platform came after internal Twitter emails were released which showed deliberation over a story in the New York Post that talked about material discovered in Hunter Biden's laptop in 2020.

On Saturday, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said that the remarks made by Trump are “anathema to the soul of our nation, and should be universally condemned.”

“You cannot only love America when you win. The American Constitution is a sacrosanct document that for over 200 years has guaranteed that freedom and the rule of law prevail in our great country. The Constitution brings the American people together – regardless of party – and elected leaders swear to uphold it. It’s the ultimate monument to all of the Americans who have given their lives to defeat self-serving despots that abused their power and trampled on fundamental rights,” said Bates in a statement.

Employees in the legal, communications and policy teams of Twitter debated and even disagreed over whether the article should be restricted under the hacked materials policy of the company. This incident took place weeks before the 2020 elections when the US President and father of Hunter Biden, Joe Biden, was running in the elections against then-President Trump.

Last month, Trump declared his third presidential bid and is still considered the Republican Party's leader widely. The party leaders were hoping that Trump would give up his election denialism rhetoric after the midterm elections' lacklustre results.

Former U.S. president Donald Trump upped his election denialism and pushed fringe conspiracy theories citing the release of internal emails showing that Twitter suppressed the New York Post story about material found on Hunter Biden’s laptop and called for the termination of the Constitution to overturn the 2020 election and reinstate him to power.

Former U.S. president Donald Trump upped his election denialism and pushed fringe conspiracy theories citing the release of internal emails showing that Twitter suppressed the New York Post story about material found on Hunter Biden’s laptop and called for the termination of the Constitution to overturn the 2020 election and reinstate him to power. Calling for the Constitution's termination so that the 2020 election can be overturned and he can be reinstated back to power, Trump wrote in a post on the social network Truth Social on Saturday, “Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.” He further accused “Big Tech” of closely working with Democrats. He added, “Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!” ALSO READ| US Navy informs its adversaries of a rare submarine port visit in Indian Ocean The post on the social platform came after internal Twitter emails were released which showed deliberation over a story in the New York Post that talked about material discovered in Hunter Biden's laptop in 2020. On Saturday, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said the remarks made by Trump are “anathema to the soul of our nation, and should be universally condemned.” “You cannot only love America when you win. ALSO READ| Russia building massive army base in occupied Mariupol, show satellite images Employees in the legal, communications and policy teams of Twitter had debated and even disagreed over whether the article on Hunter Biden should be restricted under the hacked materials policy of the company.

Trump cites Twitter row to appeal for termination of US Constitution, reinstatement as president

Elon Musk, Twitter's new owner, conducted a poll in which Twitter users narrowly decided to reverse a ban imposed on the former US president, Donald Trump more than a year ago. This decision led to Twitter restoring Trump's account. Despite Musk's admission that automated bots were influencing the results of the user poll, the account was restored.

Musk had before insisted that the business will create a content moderation committee and that "no major content decisions or account reinstatements would happen before that council convenes." Nevertheless, Trump was re-platformed on Twitter by way of a user poll despite his earlier claims. It is not yet apparent whether the council has been established.

Rapper Kanye West, who had his account suspended after making anti-Semitic comments, got it restored about the same time that Musk acquired control of Twitter in October.

Musk created a Twitter poll on Saturday, 19 November, asking if Trump's account should be reactivated. Notably, Musk said the poll was under attack by bots, which are automated programmes run by computers. One of Musk's main arguments for abandoning his $44 billion offer to purchase Twitter earlier this year was the purported existence of bots. Musk has expressed interest in reactivating Trump's account at the tumultuous time of his Twitter acquisition, in May.

US Midterms 2022: Former president Trump teases 2024 bid, Ron DeSantis not invited to Miami rally

Facing heat from several quarters, US President Joe Biden's popularity has dipped spectacularly. Now, his approval ratings have taken a tumble as well. Facing heat from several quarters, US President Joe Biden's popularity has dipped spectacularly. Now, his approval ratings have taken a tumble as well. Reportedly, Biden's current approval ratings fare lower than what his infamous predecessor, Donald Trump, ever managed to achieve during his four tumultuous years in the office, where he was impeached twice. The poll conducted by CNN shows that Biden's approval rating stood at 38 per cent while 62 per cent disapproved of his presidentship. On the economic front, Biden has an approval rating of only 30 per cent. The figures become grim when one notes that Trump's lowest economic approval rating was 41 per cent which came way back in 2018. Moreover, ahead of the midterms, the swing states haven't been kind to Biden either. His net approval ratings in Ohio (-23), Arizona (-20), Wisconsin (-18) and Pennsylvania (-19) paint a grim picture and suggest that the battle may be uphill. Democrats starting to lose confidence While the palpable public anger is understandable, it appears that Biden is also losing the confidence of his colleagues. Reportedly, the President's approval rating for the handling of the economy has dwindled from 71 per cent, earlier this year to 62 per cent amongst the Democrats in the recent survey. Even his handling of the Ukraine crisis has been met with overwhelming negativity as 54 per cent disapprove of him. As for the immigration issue, which was one of the poll planks for the Democrat President, only 39 per cent approve of Biden's work. Ever since Joe Biden gained keys to the White House, he has had to tackle a raging pandemic, which has now snowballed into sky-high inflation, sending the economy into a tailspin. The middle-class of America is struggling to make the ends meet and is perhaps, the biggest reason for Biden's dismal performance in the survey. Read More: Joe Biden mulls declaring 'Climate Change Emergency' but can he fight off his colleagues? Approval ratings can be deceiving at times but the way Biden has conducted himself in the office leaves much to be desired. The President is on the precipice of declaring a climate emergency and if that happens, his approval ratings may take another round of severe beating. A new lawsuit filed against former US president Donald Trump and his three children, alleges that the family had for years lied to insurers and lenders for tax purposes. The suit, which has been filed by New York state's attorney general Letitia James on Wednesday (September 21) claims that the Trump family both inflated and deflated their worth by billions. Hitting back at James, Donald Trump referred to the legal action against his family and real estate company as "another witch hunt" and dubbed the Black attorney general a "racist." Donald Trump and children sued for financial fraud; Ex-Prez dubs it 'another witch hunt'

The FBI has been reviewing documents that were retrieved from Donald Trump's Florida mansion earlier this month. On Monday, attorneys for the former US president requested that the FBI suspend its review of the documents so that an impartial special master can be appointed to examine the data.

The request was contained in a federal lawsuit, the first from Trump's legal team in the two weeks following the search, which broadsides the FBI investigation into the finding of secret documents at Mar-a-Lago and foreshadows arguments his attorneys will likely make as the investigation develops.

It comes as The New York Times reported that since Trump left office, the government has retrieved more than 300 documents marked classified from Mar-a-Lago, including more than 150 that were found by the National Archives in January and were a contributing factor in the criminal probe.

The 8 August search, during which the FBI claimed to have retrieved 11 sets of secret papers from Mar-a-Lago, is described as a "shockingly aggressive move" in the lawsuit. Additionally, it claims that the search is excessively broad, that Trump is entitled to a more thorough explanation of the documents that were taken from the house, and that the FBI and Justice Department have long treated him "unfairly."

“Law enforcement is a shield that protects America. It cannot be used as a weapon for political purposes,” the lawyers wrote Monday. “Therefore, we seek judicial assistance in the aftermath of an unprecedented and unnecessary raid” at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump claimed that "ALL documents have been previously declassified" in a separate statement, but he has not offered any proof to back up that assertion. He further claimed that the data had been "illegally seized from my house." In a succinct three-sentence statement, the Justice Department argued in opposition, pointing out that the search had been approved by a federal judge after the FBI had demonstrated probable cause that a crime had been committed.

The motion asks for the appointment of an independent special master who would be entrusted with reviewing the documents retrieved from Mar-a-Lago and excluding those that fall under the presidential privilege, a legal doctrine that allows presidents to keep some communications from being made public.

Trump sues US govt, seeks 'special master' to examine Mar-a-Lago documents

In what comes as a small victory for Donald Trump and his legion of Republican supporters, a Florida federal judge on Thursday ordered that portions of the affidavit that the FBI used to secure a search warrant against the former US president can be made public, much to the chagrin of the department of justice (DOJ).

Judge Bruce Reinhart in his observation after the hearing said, “I believe, at least on my initial careful review of the affidavit, that there are portions that could be presumptively unsealed.”

The DOJ lawyers have time till next Thursday i.e., seven days to submit the affidavit with the redacted portions. Moreover, the judge added that the justice department will be allowed to appeal if it doesn't agree with his 'redacted' affidavit idea.

Meanwhile, DOJ chief Jay Bratt during the hearing stated that the release of the affidavit could harm the witnesses.

“The government is very concerned about the safety of the witnesses in these cases and the impact of all the attention on these witnesses on other witnesses,” Bratt told the judge.

Who has filed the motion?

It is pertinent to note that New York Times, CNN, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press are among the outlets that have demanded the release of the affidavit.

However, curiously enough, despite blaming the FBI and DOJ for launching a witch hunt against him, neither Trump nor his lawyers have filed any motion for the unsealing of the affidavit.

Why is US DOJ not unsealing the affidavit?

As reported by WION, on Monday, the justice department refused to unseal the affidavit, stating it would likely affect the investigation process.

"If disclosed, the affidavit would serve as a roadmap to the government's ongoing investigation, providing specific details about its direction and likely course, in a manner that is highly likely to compromise future investigative steps," the DoJ lawyers wrote in the filing.

A contrast in action from the DOJ

The decision to not unseal the affidavit was in stark contrast with the confidence shown by Attorney General Merrick Garland, who, in a rather unusual stance, publicly announced that he was willing to unseal the search warrant.

Even when questioned during his brief presser last week, Garland did not give much regarding the 'evidence' submitted in the affidavit used to obtain the warrant.

“Much of our work is by necessity conducted out of the public eye. We do that to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans and to protect the integrity of our investigations," said Garland.

According to the warrant released, the FBI is circling Trump, mainly around the Espionage Act after the former President took several boxes from White House to his current Florida residence after losing the elections.

Ahead of the crucial November midterm election in the US, social media giant Twitter announced that it will be taking steps, akin to the 2020 US Presidential elections to combat misinformation and misleading claims, in a blog post, released on Thursday.

Ahead of the crucial November midterm election in the US, social media giant Twitter announced that it will be taking steps, akin to the 2020 US Presidential elections to combat misinformation and misleading claims, in a blog post, released on Thursday. Reportedly, Twitter stated that it was reactivating its Civic Integrity Policy, under which tweets with misleading claims intended to undermine public confidence in an election will be labelled with links to credible information or helpful context. Twitter stated that its policy was first introduced in 2018 and will be applied to all 435 seats and 100 seats that are up for grabs in the US House of Representatives and US Senate respectively. Twitter stated that it had tested new misleading information labels last year and the results were encouraging. "The new labels increased click-through rates by 17per cent, meaning more people were clicking labels to read debunking content. We also saw notable decreases in engagement with Tweets labelled with the new design: -13 per cent in replies, -10 per cent in Retweets and -15 per cent in likes," read the statement. One of the other initiatives announced by Twitter included the catchphrase 'prebunks'. Simply put, Twitter will attempt to get ahead of misleading narratives and debunk the lies before they could spread further. Mixed response from the netizens However, Twitter's announcement was met with mixed responses. The conservative voices claimed that the microblogging platform may act as the judge, jury and executioner once again and attempt to meddle with the electoral process. It is pertinent to note that in the run-up to US Presidential elections, Twitter, on multiple occasions had flagged tweets by former President Donald Trump. Iran's foreign ministry says crews of seized Greek tankers not arrested, 'in good health'

A prosecutor who had been leading a criminal investigation into Donald Trump before quitting last month said in his resignation letter that he believes the former president is “guilty of numerous felony violations” and he disagreed with the Manhattan district attorney’s decision not to seek an indictment.

In the letter, published Wednesday by The New York Times, Mark Pomerantz told District Attorney Alvin Bragg there was “evidence sufficient to establish Mr. Trump’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt” of allegations he falsified financial statements to secure loans and burnish his image as a wealthy businessman.

“The team that has been investigating Mr. Trump harbors no doubt about whether he committed crimes — he did,” Pomerantz wrote.

Pomerantz and his former co-leader on the Trump probe, Carey Dunne, resigned on Feb. 23 after clashing with Bragg over the future of the case.

Both were top deputies tasked with running the investigation on a day-to-day basis. Both started on the probe under former District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., and Bragg asked them to stay when he took office in January. Both Vance and Bragg are Democrats.

In his resignation letter, Pomerantz wrote that Vance had directed his deputies to present evidence to a grand jury and seek an indictment of Trump and other defendants “as soon as reasonably possible.” No former president has ever been charged with a crime.

“I believe that your decision not to prosecute Donald Trump now, and on the existing record, is misguided and completely contrary to the public interest,” Pomerantz wrote.

Danielle Filson, a spokesperson for Bragg, said in a statement Wednesday night that the investigation into Trump is continuing and that a “team of experienced prosecutors is working every day to follow the facts and the law. There is nothing we can or should say at this juncture about an ongoing investigation.”

A message seeking comment was left with Trump’s lawyer.

Trump has called the investigation a politically motivated “witch hunt.”

The Associated Press requested copies of Pomerantz and Dunne’s resignation letters under New York’s open records law, but the district attorney’s office rejected the request Feb. 25.

In its rejection, the office said: “The criminal matter both individuals were assigned remains pending; as such, the public release of the letters which reflect internal deliberations and opinions about an on-going investigation will likely interfere with that investigation.”

The Manhattan district attorney’s office started investigating Trump in 2019, first examining hush-money payments paid to women on his behalf and then expanding into an inquiry into whether the president’s company misled lenders or tax authorities about the value of its properties.

So far, the three-year investigation has resulted only in tax fraud charges against Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, and its longtime finance chief Allen Weisselberg relating to lucrative fringe benefits such as rent, car payments and school tuition.

Pomerantz, a former mafia prosecutor, was brought out of private practice by Vance to add his expertise in white collar investigations to the Trump probe. Dunne argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in a successful, multiyear fight for Trump’s tax records.

After taking office in January, Bragg said he was proud of the continuity that Dunne and Pomerantz had brought in running the high-profile investigation as he took over the D.A.’s office from Vance, who retired after a dozen years in office.

Also in January, New York Attorney General Letitia James claimed in court filings in a parallel civil investigation that her office had uncovered evidence the Trump Organization used “fraudulent or misleading” valuations of assets to get loans and tax benefits.

Trump has given his Statement of Financial Condition — a yearly snapshot of his holdings — to banks to secure hundreds of millions of dollars worth of loans on properties such as a Wall Street office building and a Florida golf course, and to financial magazines to justify his place among the world’s billionaires.

His lawyers have argued that the statements were accurate, and that any attempts to spin disagreements about the value of real estate into a crime were politically motivated.

Some legal experts had said that Manhattan prosecutors faced a potential hurdle in proving that Trump or his company intentionally falsified financial statements.

In his resignation letter, Pomerantz wrote that Trump should be prosecuted “without any further delay,” noting that much of the evidence related to before Trump was president, that the investigation had already been prolonged by the tax return battle and other fights.

Waiting to see if more damning evidence could be found would likely be unfruitful, he wrote, and would only “raise additional questions about the failure to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his criminal conduct.”

“No case is perfect. Whatever the risks of bringing the case may be, I am convinced that a failure to prosecute will pose much greater risks in terms of public confidence in the fair administration of justice,” Pomerantz wrote.

Watch | Gravitas: Why Donald Trump has failed to act like a President In his resignation letter, Pomerantz wrote that Vance had directed his deputies to present evidence to a grand jury and seek an indictment of Trump and other defendants “as soon as reasonably possible.” No former president has ever been charged with a crime. There is nothing we can or should say at this juncture about an ongoing investigation.” A message seeking comment was left with Trump’s lawyer. Trump has called the investigation a politically motivated “witch hunt.” Watch | Gravitas: A disastrous end for Trump's presidency The Associated Press requested copies of Pomerantz and Dunne’s resignation letters under New York’s open records law, but the district attorney’s office rejected the request Feb. 25. In its rejection, the office said: “The criminal matter both individuals were assigned remains pending; as such, the public release of the letters which reflect internal deliberations and opinions about an on-going investigation will likely interfere with that investigation.” The Manhattan district attorney’s office started investigating Trump in 2019, first examining hush-money payments paid to women on his behalf and then expanding into an inquiry into whether the president’s company misled lenders or tax authorities about the value of its properties. So far, the three-year investigation has resulted only in tax fraud charges against Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, and its longtime finance chief Allen Weisselberg relating to lucrative fringe benefits such as rent, car payments and school tuition. A think tank linked to the Hungarian government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has invited Donald Trump to visit Hungary.

This Center for Fundamental Rights' invitation comes as Orbán prepares for a closely fought election due on 3 April. In what is expected to be the biggest challenge to his rule since he was elected prime minister twelve years ago, Orbán Fidesz party faces a united opposition coalition.

The Guardian reports that the far-right Hungarian prime minister hopes Trump's visit to Budapest in the coming weeks will help him in his reelection campaign.

Trump has not yet responded to the invitation, however, if he agrees, the visit would be his first abroad since he lost the 2020 presidential election.

Having the former US president visit in person would be considered a significant campaign boost.

Orbán was an early supporter of Trump, endorsing him as early as summer 2016, and he has publically backed him in the 2020 elections. Donald Trump endorsed Orbán publicly for the April election after speaking with him by telephone in January.

“These visits have a huge influence in the Hungarian conservative community, because they see [Trump] as an icon, as someone who spent his presidency in a strong headwind,” said a source close to Fidesz.

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is being held in Budapest, Hungary, from 25-26 March, and it's likely that Trump has been invited for that. A European country will host the flagship conservative event for the first time.

A number of US senators will attend the conference, as will Santiago Abascal, the leader of the Vox party of Spain, and Eduardo Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro's son, according to Miklos Szanthó, the director of the Center for Fundamental Rights.

Hungarian government sources say Fidesz hopes Trump will join Orbán as the keynote speaker for the event.

During a meeting at the White House in 2019, Trump told Orbán that the two men were similar: "You're respected all over Europe. Probably a bit like me, a little bit controversial, but that’s OK”.

According to David Cornstein, a long-term friend of Trump who served as ambassador to Hungary, Trump admired Orbán for his strongman image and his control of the Hungarian political scene. Cornstein commented in 2019 that Trump would love to be in the position Viktor Orbán enjoys.

Orbán's relationship with Washington soured after Trump left office. Relations with the Trump camp, however, have remained positive. In the recent Democracy Summit hosted by Joe Biden, Hungary was the only EU member that was not invited.
