Former US president Donald Trump marked his 78th birthday on Friday (June 14) by addressing a crowd in Florida. He repetitively dismissed his opponent in November’s election, 81-year-old President Joe Biden, calling him too weak to handle a second term.

“Our country is being destroyed by unqualified people,” said Trump, who spent significant portions of a light-hearted speech teasing Biden. "All presidents should undergo aptitude tests," he said.

Donald Trump addressed ‘Club 47’ fan club members at a convention center in West Palm Beach. Tickets to the former president’s birthday celebration were priced between $25 and $60 and got sold out several days prior.&nbsp;

To celebrate Trump’s birthday, organisers brought a towering, multi-layered cake. The cake was decorated with images of Trump and topped with a red MAGA (Make America Great Again) hat.

As Trump took the stage, the crowd chanted “Happy Birthday” and “USA! USA!”

“This is the biggest birthday party I’ve ever had by far,” Trump said.

While mocking Biden, including stating that the president frequently "doesn't know where the hell he is," Trump also delivered a conflicting message to his supporters.&nbsp;

He endorsed early voting, voting by mail, and in-person voting on Election Day, but later remarked, "I actually tell our people, we don't need your vote. We've already secured numerous votes."

Meanwhile, in a birthday message to him, the Joe Biden presidential campaign labeled Trump as a ‘crook, a failure, and a fraud.’

Morning news brief: Trump vows to reverse Biden border order; USA beat Pak in T20 World Cup; and more

Donald Trump, in his first campaign event since his historic conviction, has announced that he would overturn President Joe Biden's recent order aimed at curbing illegal border crossings.

Speaking during a rally in Phoenix, Arizona, the White House hopeful pledged to use economic sanctions against countries that do not stem the flow of migrants into the United States.

<h2>'If a country is not going to behave'</h2>

Addressing an audience in the key battleground state, 'felon' Trump emphasised using tariffs as a deterrent.&nbsp;

Responding to a question about his plans to help shut off the flow of people entering the US via the southern border, Trump said, "We have tremendous economic power… if China or some other country is behaving badly, we have things called tariffs that are so severe."

"We are going to be so tough and if a country is not going to behave, we're going to tariff the hell out of that country," he added.

However, as per an AFP report, the republic did not share details about the exact kind or size of tariffs he would impose.

<h2>Felon Trump in public</h2>

The event marked Trump's first public appearance since being convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.&nbsp;

At the campaign event, AFP reported&nbsp;that the audience's questions included topics like the cost of living but remained largely focused on immigration. This issue as per polls is one of the primary concerns for voters ahead of the November 5 election.

To address these concerns and prove his might on an issue he's perceived to be badly performing on, Biden recently issued an executive order restricting asylum claims when illegal border crossings exceed 2,500 per day. It also facilitates deportations to Mexico.&nbsp;

The order, intended to be temporary until crossings fall below 1,500 per day, has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Republicans view the measure as insufficient, while others criticise it as too harsh.

Trump, seizing on this discontent, promised to rescind the order immediately if elected. "On Day One of my administration, I will be rescinding Crooked Joe's outrageous executive order," he declared, labelling it as "pro-invasion, pro-child trafficking… pro-drug dealers" without providing evidence.

Addressing a cheering crowd, he also vowed, "I will terminate every single open borders policy of the Biden administration."

The Republican leader's previous term was marked by strict immigration measures, including a controversial travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries.

Trump vows to reverse 'crooked Joe's outrageous executive' border order

A federal judge on Thursday (Jun 6) ordered Donald Trump's former top advisor Steve Bannon to report to&nbsp;jail by July 1 to serve his four-month sentence for criminal contempt of Congress conviction.

Bannon, in July 2022, was convicted of contempt for defying a subpoena to testify before the congressional panel that probed the Jan 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

Dubbed as one of the masterminds behind Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, Bannon in Oct 2022&nbsp;was convicted to four months in prison.

However, he has remained free since then while appealing his conviction.

After the judge's order, the 70-year-old while addressing the media outside the Washington courthouse said, "There's nothing that can shut me up and nothing that will shut me up."

"There's not a prison built or a jail built that will ever shut me up," he said.

"We're going to win on November 5th in an amazing landslide," he added while referring to the date of US presidential elections.

For the first seven months during Trump's tenure, Bannon served as&nbsp;Chief Strategist in the White House. He reportedly left due to conflicts with other senior staffers.

He was charged with wire fraud and money laundering in the year 2020 for taking millions of dollars given by donors for the construction of a border wall with Mexico for his own personal use.

While all the others involved in the scam were found guilty, Trump issued a blanket pardon to Bannon before leaving office in January 2021. This led to the dismissal of the charges against him.

<h2>Ex-Trump adviser Peter Navarro sentenced to 4 months for contempt of Congress</h2>

Another top Trump advisor who was also convicted of contempt of Congress was Peter Navarro who began serving his four-month sentence in March.

Navarro ignored a subpoena from a US House committee that was probing alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

In September, Navarro was convicted of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena. The subpoena required the submission of documents and testimony to a House of Representatives panel led by Democrats.&nbsp;

Melania Trump, son Barron make first public appearance post-trial verdict

In his first statement since a New York jury found Donald Trump guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records, US President Joe Biden made an indirect swipe at the former president's attacks on the justice system.

"It’s reckless, it’s dangerous, it’s irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged just because they don’t like the verdict," Biden said, speaking to reporters at the White House.

Joe Biden's comments came hours after Trump blamed him for his legal woes in remarks to the press and supporters, saying, “All this is all done by Joe Biden and his people. This is done by Washington. No one has ever seen anything like this.”

Criticising both the prosecutors and the judge overseeing the case, Trump said, "This is a scam, this is a rigged trial. It shouldn’t have been in that venue. We shouldn’t have had that judge."

In his remarks on the verdict Friday (May 31), the US President said, "The American principle that no one is above the law was reaffirmed," and commended the 12 jurors in the cases for carefully deliberating and reaching a unanimous verdict.

“Donald Trump was given every chance to protect himself,” Biden said, adding that the case was “heard by a jury of 12 citizens, 12 Americans, 12 people like you.”

Following their respective speeches at the party convention, the Libertarian Party on Sunday rejected former President Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and nominated&nbsp;party activist Chase Oliver for president.

Only six party members voted for Trump, the presumed Republican Party presidential nominee who was a write-in for the Libertarians.

The Libertarian Party, which was formed in 1971 and supports civil liberties and capitalism free from government supervision, is the third-largest American political party by voter registration, but does not have a great deal of influence in American politics. It typically garners around 3 per cent of the national vote and has few elected officials.

Before the party members selected their choice for president on Sunday, Trump addressed the convention on Saturday night. During his speech, he was repeatedly heckled. In the event's half-century history, he was the first former president to speak at the about 1,000-person gathering, which took place at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

<h2>How did Trump react to his loss?</h2>

In a post on his social media site Truth Social, Trump stated that if he had "wanted it," he "would have absolutely gotten" the Libertarian nomination.

Following seven rounds of voting, Chase Oliver, a candidate for the Georgia Senate in 2022, secured the Libertarian candidacy with a vote total of more than 60 per cent.

On Tuesday (May 21), the defence concluded its case in Donald Trump’s hush money trial after about 90 minutes of testimony, without the former US president taking the stand.&nbsp;

Trump’s legal team called two witnesses, a paralegal who presented phone records as evidence and attorney Robert Costello, who had discussions with former Trump aide-turned foe Michael Cohen about representing him following the FBI's 2018 raid on his home and office.

Also read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/months-before-indictment-judge-found-strong-evidence-that-trumps-intended-to-hide-classified-documents-724067">Judge had found 'strong evidence' against Trump in classified documents case</a>

The most important witness for the defence was Cohen, who testified in the prosecution’s case but was subjected to cross-examination that extended three days.

Due to the Memorial Day holiday, the jury will have a one-week break.

Closing arguments will be delivered next Tuesday (May 28), with a possible verdict by the end of next week.

Here are takeaways from the Trump hush money trial:

<h2>Trump doesn’t take the stand</h2>

Trump had repeatedly teased that he would take the stand in his own defence. But on Tuesday attorney Todd Blanche informed the judge after Costello was off the stand, “The defence rests.”

One reason Trump was not expected to take the stand was the probability of the cross-examination. Prosecutors requested permission from the judge to question the former president about numerous misdeeds from other cases to challenge his credibility as a witness.

Following a routine hearing also known as Sandoval hearing on what would be allowed– the judge ruled that prosecutors would have been allowed to question Trump about the $464 civil fraud verdict from last fall’s case brought by the New York attorney general.

And Trump would have been answerable to questions, including his alleged affairs with Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.

<h2>Michael Cohen’s cross-examination</h2>

The cross-examination of Michael Cohen, the prosecution’s final witness, lasted eight hours.&nbsp;

The prosecutor, Todd Blanche,&nbsp;tried to damage Cohen’s credibility, accusing him of making up his conversations with Trump, stealing from his former boss and continuing to lie even after pleading guilty to perjury in 2018.

The most dramatic moment of the cross-examination occurred when Blanche questioned Cohen about an October 24, 2016 call with Trump’s bodyguard, Keith Schiller, at 8:02 p.m.

During this call, Cohen testified that Schiller connected him with Trump, and Cohen informed Trump that he was proceeding with the payment to Daniels.

But Blanche showed Cohen’s chat with Schiller before and after that call, showing he was dealing with a teenager prank-calling him and asking Schiller for help.

Prosecutors tried to restore Cohen’s testimony, introducing a screengrab from C-SPAN showing Trump leaving a Florida rally stage with Schiller five minutes before the call.

After prosecutors rested, Blanche made a motion for Judge Juan Merchan to dismiss the case – a typical motion filed by defendants that rarely succeeds.

Blanche argued that Cohen had lied in his testimony in this case and it should be tossed out.

<h2>The next hearing</h2>

Court will resume next Tuesday for closing arguments, which will likely take the whole day.

However, before that Trump’s lawyers will have a chance to present evidence and witnesses of their own.&nbsp;

The former president has pleaded not guilty to the 34-count indictment brought against him and has also denied having sex with the adult film actor.&nbsp;

Donald Trump hush money trial closes without him taking the stand: Key developments

Michael Cohen, the estranged personal lawyer of former US president Donald Trump, is set to take stand as a key prosecution witness in the hush money trial involving porn star Stormy Daniels.&nbsp;

His insider knowledge could provide jurors a crucial perspective on the alleged campaign finance violations. But legal troubles in the past raise questions about his credibility.

He served as personal attorney to Trump until his practice came under federal investigation. That led to a&nbsp;prison sentence for Cohen but no charges against Trump, who was in White House by then.

Cohen, who is said to have arranged the payment to Daniels to keep her sexual relationship with Trump a secret,&nbsp;is expected to take the stand on Monday (May 13).

He will have the opportunity to present himself to the jury as someone who has openly acknowledged his past wrongdoing and faced consequences.

The expelled lawyer had pleaded guilty to lying to Congress and a bank.

But he said recently, under oath, that he wasn’t truthful even in admitting to some of those falsehoods.

As Trump's trial commenced, prosecutors made efforts to depict Cohen as just one element of their evidence against Trump.

But Trump and his legal team have branded Cohen a liar who currently earns a livelihood by disparaging his former employer.

<h2>Ally becomes opponent</h2>

Cohen was a condo board member in a Trump building and got involved on Trump’s side of a residents versus management dispute.

Trump soon brought Cohen into his company.

Cohen's career spanned from personal injury law to running a taxi business with his father-in-law.

As a lawyer for Donald Trump, Cohen had earned a reputation for his fierce loyalty in his heyday.

Cohen’s breakup with Trump came in 2018 after the FBI raided him home and office and Trump began to distance himself from the attorney.

Cohen promptly informed a federal court that he assisted Trump in utilising the National Enquirer tabloid as a platform to praise him, discredit his adversaries, and suppress scandalous allegations about his personal life.

In his testimony at the trial, he will need to explain his prior disavowals of key aspects of the hush money arrangements.

He will have to convince jurors that this time around, he is telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

In the course of Daniel’s case, Cohen had told The New York Times that he had not been reimbursed, but later acknowledged repayment.

Cohen also admitted to tax evasion, arranging illegal campaign contributions in the form of hush money payments, and lying to Congress about his work on a possible Trump real estate project in Moscow.

He also pleaded guilty to signing off on a home equity loan application that understated his financial liabilities.

Cohen admitted to lying to the judge who accepted his guilty plea, though he maintained he wasn't entirely guilty of the original charges.

While a fraud trial judge deemed Michael Cohen's testimony credible due to supporting evidence, a separate judge raised concerns about perjury, suggesting Cohen lied either during his testimony or when pleading guilty.&nbsp;

Since his break with Trump, Cohen has acknowledged his history of dishonesty.

On Tuesday (May 7) a judge decided that the Trump classified document case which was scheduled to go to trial on May 20 would not begin on the set date.

<h2>Why was the Trump classified documents trial delayed?</h2>

US District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Donald Trump-appointed judge, did not set a new trial date on Tuesday, but scheduled pre-trial hearings to run through July 22, reports Reuters.

As per Reuters, both the prosecution and defence acknowledged that the May 20 date would need to be delayed.&nbsp;

This has greatly reduced&nbsp;the chances that Trump will face the jury in either of the two federal cases against him before the upcoming US elections scheduled for Nov 5. Notably, Trump is also&nbsp;facing&nbsp;charges for trying to overturn the 2020 election results.

While Trump's lawyers contend that the trial should not start until after the elections, after Judge Cannon&nbsp;ordered them&nbsp;to propose a timeline for the case, they suggested an August 12 date. However, Special Counsel Jack Smith, who brought the case against the former president, has proposed a July date.

<h2>The federal cases against Trump</h2>

Trump faces 40 federal counts accusing him of retaining sensitive national security documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after leaving the presidential office in 2021 and obstructing US government efforts to retrieve them. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.&nbsp;

In another federal case, also brought by Special Counsel Smith, Trump faces charges over efforts to overturn the 2020 election results after losing to Democratic candidate, current US President Joe Biden.

As the federal cases face indefinite delay, experts have opined that this poses an "absolutely unprecedented" situation where "a defendant is potentially going to have the power to shut down his own prosecution."

Securities and Exchange Commission charged Trump Media & Technology Group’s independent accounting firm, BF Borgers with widespread fraud on Friday (May 3). While the SEC accused the Lakewood, Colorado-based auditor of operating a “sham audit mill,” it did not make allegations of wrongdoing against Truth Social owner Trump Media. What are the accusations against BF Borgers? "The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged audit firm BF Borgers CPA PC and its owner, Benjamin F. Borgers (together, “Respondents”), with deliberate and systemic failures to comply with Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) standards in its audits and reviews incorporated in more than 1,500 SEC filings from January 2021 through June 2023," SEC said in a press release. "The SEC also charged the Respondents with falsely representing to their clients that the firm’s work would comply with PCAOB standards; fabricating audit documentation to make it appear that the firm’s work did comply with PCAOB standards; and falsely stating in audit reports included in more than 500 public company SEC filings that the firm’s audits complied with PCAOB standards" the SEC statement added. The company and its owner, Benjamin Borgers, also agreed to pay a combined $14 million in fines. “Borgers and his sham audit mill have been permanently shut down,” Gurbir Grewal, director of the SEC’s enforcement division, said in a press release. Companies that have employed BF Borgers will need to look for new accounting firms. SEC alerted those companies in a separate statement issued on Friday. Trump Media has announced that it is also looking for a new accounting firm. Trump Media's stock price falls Shortly after trading began on Friday, Trump Media, the company that controls the Truth Social app, saw its stock price fall 9 percent. Borgers worked as Trump Media's independent registered accounting firm before the social media company went public in March. Later in March, Trump Media's audit committee authorised Borgers' appointment as the public company's accounting firm.

Donald Trump has insinuated that President Joe Biden may have been under the influence of drugs during his State of the Union (SOTU) address last month. The former Republican presidential candidate made these comments during an interview with radio broadcaster Hugh Hewitt on Thursday (April 4). Referring to reports of cocaine being found in the White House in July last year, Trump claimed, without offering evidence, that Biden was "all jacked up" and "higher than a kite" during his March address.

When asked if he thinks that Joe Biden was using cocaine,&nbsp;Trump&nbsp;said, "I think what happened is, you know, that white stuff that they happened to find, which happened to be cocaine in the White House, I don't know, I think something's going on there".

"I watched his State of the Union, and he was all jacked up at the beginning. By the end, he was fading fast. There's something going on there. I want to debate. And I think debates, with him, at least, should be drug tested. I want a drug test," he continued.&nbsp;

When asked by the host if he is suggesting that the US President used cocaine, Trump responded,&nbsp;&nbsp;"I don't know what he's using, but that was not, hey, he was higher than a kite".

"But he's obviously, he's being helped in some way, because most of the time, he looks like he's falling asleep. And all of a sudden, he walked up there and did a poor job. But he was all jacked up," Donald Trump added.&nbsp;

Reacting to Trump's comments, Biden campaign spokesperson Ammar Moussa said it was a "weird outburst." ‘I want a drug test’: Trump says Biden was ‘higher than kite’ at State of the Union address

An Atlanta-area judge, Scott McAfee, dismissed Trump's argument that his efforts to overturn the 2020 election were protected by the First Amendment. This means that the criminal indictment against former president Donald Trump in Georgia stands.

Judge McAfee said, "The defence has not presented, nor is the court able to find, any authority that the speech and conduct alleged is protected political speech."

This decision pushes forward the state racketeering case against Trump. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis says that she is ready for a trial potentially as soon as August, but till now, no trial date has been set yet for Trump and his 14 co-defendants.

This is not the first time Judge McAfee has rejected the First Amendment argument. He has taken similar actions against the pleas of other other defendants in the Georgia case. Other state and federal judges have consistently dismissed claims that Trump's actions were protected political speech.

“After interpreting the indictment’s language liberally in favor of the State as required at this pretrial stage, the Court finds that the Defendants’ expressions and speech are alleged to have been made in furtherance of criminal activity and constitute false statements knowingly and willfully made in matters within a government agency’s jurisdiction which threaten to deceive and harm the government,” McAfee's order read.

Trump's Georgia lawyer, Steve Sadow, said that Trump and other defendants respectfully disagree with the judgment and they will explore further legal options.&nbsp;

“It is significant that the court’s ruling made clear that defendants were not foreclosed from again raising their ‘as-applied challenges at the appropriate time after the establishment of a factual record',” Sadow’s statement said.

During hearings, Sadow contended that Trump's attempts to challenge the Georgia election results were protected political speech. On the other hand, Fulton County prosecutor Donald Wakeford argued that Trump's lies about the election were part of criminal activity with criminal intentions.

Prosecutors charged the trio last year with illegally trading on inside information about Trump Media &amp; Technology Group's (TMTG) plan to go public through a merger with a blank-check company. TMTG operates Truth Social, Trump's main social media platform.

Prosecutors said the trio signed confidentiality agreements in June 2021 when they were approached to become early investors in Digital World Acquisition, the blank-check company. The agreements required them to keep information they learned confidential and not trade the company's securities in the open market, prosecutors said.

After hearing the company was in merger talks with TMTG, prosecutors said the trio tipped others and bought Digital World securities, selling them after the deal was announced on Oct. 20, 2021, to make a total of $22 million in illegal profit.

Michael and Gerald Shvartsman said in court that they knew what they were doing was wrong when they traded on nonpublic information.

Donald Trump and his co-defendants posted a bond of $175 million in New York civil fraud case following a judge's ruling that they had for years misrepresented the value of his properties.

The bond is underwrite by an insurance company run by a billionaire, who got his start making high-risk, high-interest loans to car buyers with poor credit.

Don Hankey, whose company provided the bond, is a little-known tycoon who built his $7.4 billion fortune through car dealerships and providing subprime auto loans, according to Forbes magazine.

Hankey is richer than Trump, whom Forbes estimates is worth $6.4 billion, including his multi-billion stake in the newly public Trump Media &amp; Technology Group.

According to the Associated Press, Hankey has never met or spoken with Trump and said&nbsp;his Knight Speciality Insurance company provided both cash and bonds as security for Trump's appellate bond. That bond is now essentially a placeholder that will guarantee payment if the judgment against Trump is upheld on appeal.&nbsp;

"This is the work Knight Insurance does, and we're happy to do this for anyone who needs a bond," Hankey was quoted as saying.

Who is Don Hankey?

Don Hankey&nbsp;started in the auto industry when his father bought a stake in a Ford dealership in Los Angeles in 1958. Hankey, who was a teenager at that time, started out washing cars during the summer and later stepped into a salesman role.&nbsp;

Hankey’s father died and his family lost its stake in the car dealership. But a few years after Hankey's graduation, his family repurchased the dealership with a $250,000 loan.

How did Hankey get into the car loan business?

After buying the dealership, Hankey courted buyers that other car sellers often rejected: subprime borrowers. His dealership provided the loans, unlike other car dealers who typically turn to banks to provide financing for auto purchases.&nbsp;

"We had beefs going on, and at the same time people coming in, buying cars," Hankey said. "But it all worked. And you would think that somebody buying a car would hate to see somebody else arguing about a payment, but it didn't seem to matter."

What other businesses does Hankey own?

Hankey expanded beyond auto dealerships after observing demand for subprime auto loans outside of Los Angeles.

Is Don Hankey a Trump supporter?

Hankey voted for Trump but said that his support for the real estate developer didn't play into his decision to extend the bond.&nbsp;

"Yes, I voted for him in the past, but this is a business deal and this is what we do," Hankey said. "I have never met Donald Trump, nor talked to him on the phone."

A fundraiser for President Joe Biden in New York on March 28 could set a record for the biggest amount raised for a political event by raising $25 million, according to his campaign. Barack Obama and Bill Clinton will attend the fundraiser.&nbsp;

<h2>Fundraiser to unite over three decades of Democratic leadership</h2>

The headline-grabbing event will feature a discussion among the three American presidents moderated by 'The Late Show' host Stephen Colbert along with musical guests like Queen Latifah, Lizzo, Ben Platt Cynthia Erivo, and Lea Michele.

"This historic raise is a show of strong enthusiasm for President Biden and Vice President Harris and a testament to the unprecedented fundraising machine we've built," Biden-Harris 2024 campaign co-chair Jeffrey Katzenberg said in a statement.

<h2>How much does the fundraiser ticket cost?</h2>

The hourlong event is expected to attract thousands of Biden supporters at Radio City Music Hall. The ticket prices start from $225 and go up to $500,000. The event has different tires of access depending on how much money donors give. Small donors can attend the event virtually by paying $25.

For example, a $100,000 donation could get you a photo with all three presidents, $250,000 earns donors access to one reception, and $500,000 gets them an invite to a super exclusive event.

The event doesn't end there according to the campaign, there is an afterparty too, hosted by none other than First Lady Jill Biden and DJ D-Nice at Radio City Music Hall with 500 selected guests.

Campaign co-chair Jeffrey Katzenberg said, “This historic raise is a show of strong enthusiasm for President Biden and Vice President Harris and a testament to the unprecedented fundraising machine we’ve built. Unlike our opponent, every dollar we’re raising is going to reach the voters who will decide this election — communicating the president’s historic record, his vision for the future, and laying plain the stakes of this election.”

This fundraiser is a precursor to the upcoming US presidential election where President Joe Biden will face off against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The 2024 United States presidential election is scheduled to happen on November 5.

Biden fundraiser with Obama and Clinton could 'set a record' by raising $25 million

A newly prominent stock has emerged on Wall Street, attracting considerable interest from investors, with its primary shareholder being former US president Donald Trump.

Trump's social media venture, Trump Media &amp; Technology Group, commenced trading on the Nasdaq on Tuesday (March 26) under the ticker DJT, experiencing an immediate surge in value, with a 40 percent gain in early trading.

The merger between Trump Media — the parent company of Truth Social, Trump’s primary platform for engaging supporters and addressing critics — and a cash-rich public shell company was finalised on Monday, following a significant rise in the shell company's stock price leading up to the deal.&nbsp;

This surge has been fuelled by fervent trading activity since the merger proposal was made in 2021. Trump Media now boasts an estimated market value exceeding $6 billion, surpassing that of established corporations like Alaska Airlines, Western Union, and American Eagle Outfitters.

The primary beneficiary of this market activity is Trump, who holds approximately 60 per cent of Trump Media’s shares, with his stake valued at over $4 billion.

Before the merger, shares of the shell company — Digital World Acquisition Corporation — had been indicative of investor sentiment towards Trump. This sentiment is likely to persist with the merged companies, particularly given Trump’s ongoing presence in the news with pending trials and potential presidential campaign activities.

From a conventional standpoint, Trump Media’s valuation appears unusually high. The company generated only $3.3 million in revenue from advertising on Truth Social during the first nine months of the previous year, with a recorded loss of $49 million.

This translates to a market value for Trump Media that is more than 1,000 times its estimated annual revenue. While investors sometimes assign optimistic valuations to small, loss-making companies in anticipation of rapid growth or speculative market behaviour, such valuations are typically not seen at this magnitude.

In comparison, other social media companies trade at significantly lower price-to-sales ratios than Trump Media: Reddit stands at around 10, Meta at 7, and Snap at 6, according to FactSet. Even high-performing tech stocks like Nvidia and ARM trade at price-to-sales ratios of approximately 25.

Investors who have shown interest in Digital World's stock have predominantly been individual investors, rather than institutional investment firms and hedge funds. On a message board dedicated to supporters of the merger on Truth Social, individual investors celebrated Trump Media's debut under its new stock symbol.

Given its trading patterns, Trump Media shares similarities with so-called "meme stocks" like GameStop and AMC Entertainment, which experienced significant surges in value driven by groups of amateur investors during the pandemic.

Kristi Marvin, a former investment banker and editor of SPACInsider, which monitors the market for special purpose acquisition companies, commented, "It’s difficult to predict how this will trade, but it certainly exhibits characteristics of a meme stock, so we might observe considerable volatility."

Digital World was established as a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), with the sole objective of raising capital from investors and subsequently merging with an operational business to create a publicly traded entity.

Large investors who acquired shares of Digital World, or now Trump Media, would not be obligated to publicly disclose their holdings until mid-May.

Major Republican donors rallied up to assist former president Donald Trump in covering a hefty $454 million bond required in a civil fraud case ahead of the deadline on March 25, sources told the news agency, Reuters. What is Trump's civil fraud case about? Trump is facing a New York civil case where he was found liable for inflating his net worth to obtain better loan and insurance terms, resulting in a massive judgment against him. Billionaires who rallied to support Trump Billionaire hedge fund founder John Paulson and oil magnate Harold Hamm are among the prominent figures involved in this effort. They were seeking financial aid to help Trump pay the bond amount. Reuters reported that a donor offered more than $10 million towards the bond over the weekend, but was later told it was not necessary. Billionaires Paulson and Hamm will also participate in a campaign fundraiser for Trump, showcasing ongoing support from key allies. It is not necessary to disclose the sources of funds obtained to pay for the bonds. Earlier, Trump paid a $91.6 million bond after he lost the defamation case against writer E. Jean Carroll. Ex-Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been ordered to report to prison this month, his lawyers said in a court filing, which could make him the first senior member of the former president's administration to do so for efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat.

Navarro, who served as Trump's trade adviser, is due on March 19 to begin his four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the U.S. House of Representatives committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, his lawyers revealed in a court filing late on Sunday.

They are asking a federal appeals court in Washington to pause the sentence while Navarro appeals his conviction. His defence team indicated they would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene if his request is denied.

Navarro, 74, was found guilty of contempt of Congress last September for refusing to turn over documents or sit for an interview with the Democratic-led House committee that investigated the Capitol riot, a failed attempt by Trump supporters to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election. He was sentenced in January.

Navarro, a China hawk who also advised Trump on the response to the COVID pandemic, has claimed Trump invoked the legal doctrine of executive privilege, which shields some presidential records and communications from disclosure.

A federal judge found that Trump had not formerly invoked the privilege.

Steve Bannon, a onetime top strategist to Trump, was also sentenced to four months in prison for defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 panel, but a judge has allowed him to remain free while he appeals.

Donald Trump called on President Joe Biden to undergo a cognitive test, criticising the Democratic candidate, who is highly likely to be his opponent in the upcoming November US election.

Trump, 77, has consistently touted Biden's performance on a basic dementia-detecting exam, which has invited mockery from his critics. Concerns about the mental acuity of both candidates have been raised due to various missteps.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, "Crooked Joe Biden must take a Cognitive Test. Maybe that way we would be able to find out why he makes such terrible decisions. I took two of them and ACED them both (no mistakes!). All Presidents, or people wanting to become President, should mandatorily take this test!"

Biden, at 81, recently underwent an annual physical, and doctors declared him "fit for duty," noting no significant changes in his health over the past year. The White House asserted that a cognitive test was unnecessary, emphasising that Biden demonstrates cognitive abilities daily, seamlessly transitioning between various topics.

Public opinion, reflected in polls, consistently indicates reluctance for a Biden-Trump rematch in November, with concerns about both candidates being considered too old for the presidency.

Trump, likely to secure the Republican nomination, frequently mocks Biden's verbal slip-ups and mimics his mannerisms during rallies. A recent report, while exonerating Trump over retaining classified documents, described him as "an elderly man" displaying limitations in memory and recall.

Trump's boasting about acing a dementia test, involving recalling five words in order, contrasts with his own verbal mistakes. In recent weeks, he has erroneously referred to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as the leader of Turkey and repeatedly confused former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with his primary rival, Nikki Haley.

Maybe that way we would be able to find out why he makes such terrible decisions. I took two of them and ACED them both (no mistakes!). All Presidents, or people wanting to become President, should mandatorily take this test!" Biden, at 81, recently underwent an annual physical, and doctors declared him "fit for duty," noting no significant changes in his health over the past year. The White House asserted that a cognitive test was unnecessary, emphasising that Biden demonstrates cognitive abilities daily, seamlessly transitioning between various topics. A recent report, while exonerating Trump over retaining classified documents, described him as "an elderly man" displaying limitations in memory and recall. Former United States president and current presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Saturday (Feb 17) launched a sneaker line, a day after he was fined nearly $355 million in the New York civil fraud case, American media reported.

Former United States president and current presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Saturday (Feb 17) launched a sneaker line, a day after he was fined nearly $355 million in the New York civil fraud case, American media reported. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, Trump unveiled "Trump Sneakers" at the Sneaker Con in Philadelphia. The report said that Trump, 77, was met with boos as well as cheers at the Philadelphia Convention Center as he introduced what he called the first official Trump footwear. “This is something I’ve been talking about for 12 years, 13 years, and I think it’s going to be a big success,” he said. Some people at the event held signs that read “SNEAKERHEADS LOVE TRUMP.” Sneakers sold out on website The sneakers, gold lame high tops with an American flag detail on the back, are being sold as “Never Surrender High-Tops” for $399 on a new website (called Trump Sneakers) that also sells Trump-branded “Victory47” cologne and perfume for $99 a bottle. The website said it has no connection to Trump’s presidential campaign. This is not the first money-making venture that the 77-year-old Republican announced since launching his third campaign for the White House in 2022. In 2023, Trump reported making between $100,000 and $1 million for a series of digital trading cards that portrayed him, through photo editing, in a series of cartoon-like images, the Associated Press reported. Trump Sneakers is run by CIC Ventures LLC, a company that Trump reported owning in his 2023 financial disclosure. Trump fined in New York fraud case On Friday, Trump was ordered to pay $354.9 million to the state of New York in penalties for fraudulently overstating his net worth to dupe lenders, a judge ruled. Justice Arthur Engoron also banned Trump from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation for three years. In his ruling, Engoron said that Trump and the other defendants in the civil fraud case were incapable of admitting the error of their ways. Addressing his supporters in Michigan on Saturday, Trump said the fraud fine was an election interference ploy. "The decision yesterday in New York, you may have read about it... crooked judge. Crooked judge, he's a crooked judge... (The decision) by a radical left-wing judge was a lawless and unconstitutional atrocity that set fire to our laws like no one has ever seen in this country before. That happens in banana republics. It doesn't happen in this country. The case is a complete and total sham. It's a sham case," said Trump. (With inputs from agencies)

Fani Willis, the lead prosecutor in the Georgia election case involving Donald Trump, faced intense scrutiny over her relationship with fellow prosecutor Nathan Wade during a contentious hearing on Thursday (Feb 15). The defence alleged that her association with Wade, whom she appointed, presented a conflict of interest that could undermine the charges against Trump.

During the heated two-hour session, Willis vehemently denied the accusations, expressing increasing frustration. At one point, she exclaimed, "It is a lie," prompting a surprised reaction from Judge Scott McAfee, who called for a brief recess, as reported by the BBC.

<h2>Undermining the case</h2>

The allegations against Willis and Wade were brought forth by one of Trump's co-defendants, Mike Roman.

He claimed that the two prosecutors had an improper relationship and financially benefited from it. These claims threatened to weaken the election-subversion charges against Trump.

Roman alleged that Willis overpaid Wade for his role as special prosecutor and that they enjoyed luxury vacations together, including trips to the Bahamas, Napa Valley, and Caribbean resorts. Willis and Wade admitted to their relationship but denied any wrongdoing.

During questioning, both Willis and Wade faced inquiries regarding financial reimbursements and vacations.

Wade testified that Willis typically repaid him in cash, making it difficult to trace transactions. Willis said she was independent and denied any reliance on others for financial matters.

Former friend and employee Robin Yeartie contradicted Willis and Wade's timeline, claiming to have witnessed their romantic involvement years before Wade joined the Trump case.

Willis disputed this, asserting that their relationship began later and was not physical due to Wade's cancer diagnosis.

Judge McAfee expressed the possibility of disqualifying Willis from the case if the evidence supports the defence's claims. Such a decision could significantly impact the proceedings against Trump, potentially leading to delays or even derailment.

Georgia election case: Trump prosecutor Fani Willis accuses defence of lying in testimony

For years, fans have looked out for Easter eggs and hints in Taylor Swift's songs on heartbreaks. Swift's love life- however much she tried to keep it discreet- has been fodder for gossip as well as her lyrics, as the men Swift has dated in the past are mostly actors and singers, and celebrities in their own right. But her recent romance with Kansas City Chiefs NFL player Travis Kelce has captured the imagination of not only the couple's fans but also conspiracy theorists in America, mainly from the right wing. Now, that's a first even for Taylor Swift.&nbsp;

All eyes are on the Super Bowl 2024 where Kansas City Chiefs take on San Fransico 49ers on February 11. The Super Bowl is considered one of the biggest sporting events in America but this year is extra special as the NFL hopes to gain more viewers because the game will have Swift in the stands cheering for her beau Kelce.&nbsp;

<h2>Conspiracy around Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce romance</h2>

Celebrity love stories, especially when they involve Taylor Swift, are always under the public lens. But her romance with Kelce has reached, hilariously enough, the corridors of the Pentagon.

That's because the conspiracy theorists see a psychological operation or psy-op to get US President Joe Biden re-elected.&nbsp;

Now, ordinary mortals like you and me would scratch their heads thinking how the romance of a singer and football player could have anything to do with Biden getting back in office. But that's the beauty of America. It is the land of bizarre conspiracy theories that may not make sense to laymen like us, but those who hatch it are always very convinced about it.&nbsp;

Right-wing inhabitants of what now seems to be a 'Trump land' seem to feel that the Super Bowl is rigged and the result will be in favour of the Kansas City Chiefs, one way or the other. Some outlandish theorists have also claimed that post-win, Kelce, and Swift will announce their engagement and subsequently endorse Biden for president.&nbsp;

Swift is a well-known Biden supporter and had backed him in 2020. Kelce, on his part, had supported the Pfizer vaccine, which the Biden-led US government had rolled into the US market. (Vaccines were a contentious issue during the Covid pandemic, often rejected by the conspiracy theorists). So it makes both pro-Democrats.&nbsp;

<h2>Pentagon and NFL react</h2>

Republican Vivek Ramaswamy called Swift and Kelce an “artificially culturally propped up couple.” &nbsp;Another even called Swift a Pentagon asset for Biden's re-election- a claim that the Pentagon had to shut down.

"To set the record straight - Taylor Swift is not part of a DOD psychological operation. Period," said spokesperson Sabrina Singh, while cheekily using a Swift song title, "Shake It Off."&nbsp;

Who would have possibly imagined that the Pentagon would have to comment on a cultural phenomenon like Swift and her latest romance? But it did.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, NFL chief Roger Goodell dismissed conspiracy theories surrounding Taylor Swift as “nonsense”. &nbsp;

“Anybody in society in a public position is subject to criticism,” Goodell said of the conspiracy theories.

“But I think the idea that this is within a script, this is pre-planned, is just nonsense,” Goodell said. “It’s frankly not even worth talking about.”

<h2>Why is Swift's new romance so hard to digest?</h2>

Let's face it. Much of America is conservative in its way of thinking.&nbsp;

For years, the country has managed to sell its liberal-modern attitude and ever-accepting nature to the world but when you dig deeper, you realise that many in the country are still very orthodox, sexist, and racist.&nbsp;

The US cannot yet have a woman leading the country, its political leaders need to showcase their happy families and perfect marriages to win elections, and its abortion laws are questionable, to say the least.

It is only natural then, that many people raise doubts when a 34-year-old successful woman, loved by the world, has a successful romance very much in the public eye.&nbsp;

So the easiest way for them is to dismiss Swift's romantic sojourn at the NFL games and her very PDA-filled romance with Kelce as a political conspiracy.

Here are some samples:

Fox News recently ran a show that discussed: "Is Taylor Swift a Pentagon asset?"

And the anchor, Jesse Waters, said: “Around four years ago, the Pentagon’s psychological operations unit floated turning Taylor Swift into an asset. It’s real. The Pentagon psy-op unit pitched NATO on turning Taylor Swift into an asset for combating misinformation online.”

A pro-Trump broadcaster, Mike Crispi, recently said: "EVERYONE knows Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce is fake and the Super Bowl is rigged. You’re a whacko at this point if you DON’T believe it."

These conspiracy theories have gained currency in right-wing media and spread like wildfire in parts of the population that can now access Twitter without the filters, now that its chief Elon Musk has removed them after taking over the social media platform and renaming it X.&nbsp;

It is easy to label a celebrity of Swift's stature to always have a motive behind every move. She can't possibly be genuinely in love with someone, can she? Where is the time?

Cynics have always been after her and Swifties have always defended her. Whether or not the romance is real is something that time will tell, but till then, let the lovebirds be. And look out for their romance at the Super Bowl. Everything need not be about politics.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her primary prosecutor on the 2020 election case Nathan Wade, admitted in the court documents about having a "personal" relationship.

However, Willis vehemently refuted allegations that she benefited financially from employing Wade.

Wade's declaration is included in the filing from Willis, who is leading the Georgia criminal investigation against former President Donald Trump and his aides regarding attempts to rig the 2020 election. Wade states that in 2022 he and Willis

The court filing by Willis, who is leading the Georgia criminal investigation against former President Donald Trump and his aides regarding attempts to rig the 2020 election, comprises a declaration from Wade that claims he and Willis in 2022, “developed a personal relationship in addition to our professional association and friendship.”&nbsp;

Wade denied that he had "shared with or provided to" Willis any of his gains from the case.

“The District Attorney received no funds or personal financial gain from my position as Special Prosecutor,” he said.

Willis also stated their “personal relationship … has never involved direct or indirect financial benefit to District Attorney Willis.”

“While the allegations raised in the various motions are salacious and garnered the media attention they were designed to obtain, none provide this Court with any basis upon which to order the relief they seek,” the filing stated.

Willis stated in her writing that she has no financial or personal conflicts of interest and that defence lawyers did not establish the legal foundation for disqualification, that “constitutes a legal basis for disqualification,” and that she “has made no public statements that warrant disqualification or judicial inquiry.”

The motion also upheld Wade, stating that the attacks on his qualifications are “factually inaccurate, unsupported, and malicious, in addition to providing no basis whatsoever to dismiss the indictment or disqualify Special Prosecutor Wade.”

“Defendants do not point to any action taken by the District Attorney or any of her staff that has been outside the character of an officer of the law specially charged to oversee either the special purpose grand jury’s investigation or the prosecution of these Defendants,” the motion reads.

“Instead, the motions attempt to cobble together entirely unremarkable circumstances of Special Prosecutor Wade’s appointment with completely irrelevant allegations about his personal family life into a manufactured conflict of interest on the part of the District Attorney. The effort must fail.”

Condemning Trump, Biden's campaign spokesperson Michael Tyler in a statement on Saturday said: "For the entirety of our nation's history, presidents have put their hand on the Bible and sworn to protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States—and Donald Trump can't bring himself to sign a piece of paper saying he won't attempt a coup to overthrow our government."

"We know he's deadly serious because three years ago today he tried and failed to do exactly that."

As per the Guardian, Trump signed this voluntary oath in his previous presidential runs — 2016 and 2020.

"This is the same man who thinks American troops who died protecting the ideals outlined in the Constitution are suckers and losers – yet calls the convicted felons who violently assaulted and killed police officers on January 6th 'hostages'. He can't fathom putting anything – our country, our principles, or the wellbeing and safety of the American people – above his own quest for retribution and power," remarked Tyler.

Responding to Tyler's statement, Trump's spokesperson Steven Cheung said: "President Trump will once again take the oath of office on January 20th, 2025, and will swear 'to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.'"

Donald Trump re-entering the US White House could "end American democracy as we know it," warn three women who worked for the democrat during his earlier stint as the President.

They voiced the warning while appearing in front of the US House committee investigating Trump's efforts to overrun the Capitol after losing the 2020 elections to President Joe Biden. Subsequently, they also issued another warning during an unprecedented television interview on Sunday, reports The Guardian.

<h2>Chaos of Trump's Presidency</h2>

During an interview on ABC's This Week, Sarah Matthews, a former deputy White House press secretary, remarked that, "People in general have short memories, and might forget the chaos of the Trump years."

"They also might not just be paying attention to what he's saying now—and the threat to democracy that exists. It does really concern me if he makes it to the general [election] that he could win. I'm still hopeful that we can defeat him in the primaries, but we're running out of time," she added, as reported by The Guardian.

"We don't need to speculate because we already saw it play out," said Matthews while remarking on what another Trump presidency may look like.

"To this day, he still doubles down on the fact that he thinks that the election was stolen and fraudulent. And his rhetoric has just gotten increasingly erratic. He’s literally called for things like doing away with parts of the constitution, [and] wanting to weaponise the department of justice to enact revenge on his political enemies."

Appearing alongside Matthews were former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson and Alyssa Farah Griffin, Trump's former communications director.

Griffin warned that, "Fundamentally, a second Trump term could mean the end of American democracy as we know it, and I don't say that lightly."

"We all witnessed him trying to steal a democratic election before and go into historic and unconstitutional lengths to do so. That just shows he's willing to basically break every barrier to get into power and to stay into power."

"What scares me as much as him and his retribution is the almost cult-like following he has, the threats, the harassment, the death threats that you get when he targets you, is really horrifying and has no place in our American discourse," she added.

Hutchinson, who was a key witness against Trump during the House committee’s public hearings in 2022, said that voters should not ignore Trump's voicing of his desire to be a dictator on his first day back in the White House.

"The fact that he feels that he needs to lean into being a dictator alone shows that he is a weak and feeble man," she said.
