Dia Mirza’s production venture One India Stories has won Best Indian Short Film at All Living Things Environmental Film Festival (ALT EFF) for its debut film Panha, a moving, intimate story about home, heritage, and the price of progress.

Founded by childhood friends Dia Mirza and Ananya Rane, One India Stories was born from a shared belief that storytelling can build empathy and spark change. Panha marks their first film under the banner, and its journey has already touched hearts far beyond the mango orchards of Maharashtra where it was shot.

Also read: DGA led by Christopher Nolan to meet Netflix over acquisition of Warner Bros

Directed by Sakshi Mishra, Panha follows a family of mango farmers facing eviction from their ancestral land due to a bullet train project. The story unfolds through the tender eyes of seven-year-old Vithu — inviting us into a world where loss is quiet, courage is fragile, and childhood carries the heaviest truths. The film offers neither judgement nor propaganda, but a rare, humane pause to feel what “development” means for those left in its shadow.

Speaking about the win, Dia Mirza shared,

“Panha was made with love, trust, and a deep respect for the lives it portrays. This win is for the farmers who opened their homes and hearts to us, and for every child whose story deserves to be seen and felt. Cinema, to me, is at its most powerful when it reminds us of our shared humanity.”

Speaking about the win, Dia Mirza shared, “Panha was made with love, trust, and a deep respect for the lives it portrays. This win is for the farmers who opened their homes and hearts to us, and for every child whose story deserves to be seen and felt. Cinema, to me, is at its most powerful when it reminds us of our shared humanity.”

Dia Mirza appointed as Jury to Champion Environmental Cinema with ALT EFF 2024

Dia Mirza and R Madhavan's film Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein was released in 2001 and remains a cult classic. The film is loved by many for its music and romance. But there also have been some who have pointed out that the film was problematic in the way it normalised stalking of the female lead by the male lead.

Years later, Dia Mirza has finally addressed the debate and admitted that she was uncomfortable with how Madhavan's character stalked her in the film.

Dia Mirza opens up about RHTDM

Dia Mirza recently spoke to Bollywood Hungama and addressed the decade-long debate.

She reflected on whether, after 20 years, the stalking portions would still make her feel uncomfortable. "I was uncomfortable when Maddy's character was stalking me. Although Reena (Dia’s character) acknowledges it. She gives it off to him. She has that moment when she tells him off. What works that people get past that notion, that it’s okay, is the fact that Maddy’s character, at the end of the value, has very strong values, is respectful, is kind, is well-intentioned," she said.

The actress was also asked whether she made the right choice, choosing Madhavan's character over Saif Ali Khan's character (Sam). "What can I say now? Saif was such a good man, I’d wonder why she’d leave him. That was shown in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. So it’s very interesting that a film shows a point of view, while another film shows another point of view. If there's ever a sequel made, it'll be very interesting to see where these people are today," said Dia.

Dia's latest film Dhak Dhak has hit theatres on October 13. The movie also stars Fatima Sana Sheikh, Ratna Pathak Shah and Sanjana Sanghi in lead roles.

The recently concluded G20 Summit in India has been crucial to furthering the key SDG commitments made by the Global South, most importantly India. The UN agenda at the UNGA will further this conversation about issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, drought, land degradation, and how the pandemic and geopolitical issues have reversed SDG gains.

She added, "The UN has always linked synergistic cooperation with global solutions. Collective responsibility generally runs like a thread through UNGA's humanitarian and environmental agendas and this time will be no different. I am looking forward to seeing what new strategies will be formed to further gender rights, social and economic equality as well as SDG goals."

Dia also hopes to highlight some positive tidings from India and said that we need big shifts at the policy level in addition to individual initiatives to combat climate change because environmental anomalies disproportionately affect the most vulnerable amongst us, including women and children.

She concluded, “As I leave for New York, I also take with me beautiful stories of Indian change makers who are cleaning up beaches, turning trash into products of great beauty, carrying out reforestation projects single-handedly, and standing up for wildlife habitats. I feel proud to represent a country where so many citizens are working towards a sustainable and inclusive future."

Exclusive: Indian Actor Dia Mirza speaks to WION on playing Geetanjali in 'Bheed'

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha's new film Bheed brings back the terrible memories of 2020 when the world was under a lockdown. This was the first wave of the pandemic, when most were clueless of what they were fighting for, and the extent of the disease. The misinformation and lack of awareness were in plenty. In India, the lockdown also led to a mass exodus of immigrants from big cities attempting to return to their villages after being left without shelter and jobs overnight. The situation was unprecedented, with authorities unable to tackle the sea of humans struggling to reach home through various means, resulting in several tragic deaths and arbitrary arrests. In Bheed, Sinha takes various news snippets to weave a story of an India that we seldom talk about but one that exists within all of us. One of discrimination, of privileges, of caste divisions.

Starring an ensemble cast of Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Kapur, Bhumi Pednekar, Ashutosh Rana, Dia Mirza, Kritika Kamra and Aditya Srivastava- Bheed is an amalgamation of the migrant crisis that gripped India and showed us the other side of our country which is often overlooked.

Rao plays a junior cop, who is given a charge of a police picket of a state border as the Indian government announced total lockdown. The police picket is a temporary one with Rao as its temporary in-charge. Born in a lower caste family, Rao's Surya Kumar Singh Tikas wants to make the most of the opportunity at hand. He is a law-enforcing authority and aware of his powers but ever so often stumbles in front of those who have upper-caste surnames- even if they may be from lower strata of the society.

With a handful of aides, Tikka has to prevent a huge crown from crossing the border until further orders come in. There are buses full of immigrants, some who have walked for miles for days, kins of politicians, and the urban elite- all gathered at that picket Tikas is 'in-charge' of. All hungry, tired, and easily agitable - and he along with fellow cop Singh Ji has to manage them there until he gets clearance from the top bosses.

Written by Anubhav Sinha, Saumya Tiwari, and Sonali Jain, - the picket serves as a way to represent India, ridden by disparities, by caste, and class politics where a Brahmin watchman is pitted against a Dalit cop, an urban elite forces her driver to follow a young girl on a bicycle through the fields in order to reach her daughter's hostel. A health worker has to intervene when a bus full of Muslims is forced to sit inside in the heat because they have been labeled as 'super-spreaders' by the news agencies and a journalist has to look beyond her TRPs, perfect visually moving to understand the plight of the people around her.

In a way, Bheed serves as a spiritual sequel to Sinha's previous two films- Article 15 and Mulk. Both talking of minorities in India. And Sinha seems to have taken note of the criticism that came his way when Article 15 had released and had an upper caste as an agent of change in a caste-ridden police station. In Bheed the lead is from the minority, fighting inner demons even as he yields power and authority over those who have oppressed his community for a long.

The film opens with gut-wrenching incidents when a train ran over a bunch of sleepy and tired labourers. The scene is a grim reminder of how the country had failed most of its people and yet, two years on- the same people are back in cities, serving the privileged- a fact that a disgruntled cameraperson of a media outlet poignantly points out to the idealist journalist.

Shot entirely in black and white by Soumik Mukherjee, the canvas doesn't take any middle ground and shows the two extremes of society effectively.

Performances by the entire cast is praiseworthy but Rao and Pankaj Kapur are scene stealers in their respective roles. Anguished, helpless, and in pain- both display myriad emotions through their stellar work.

The film, after -several cuts that take out 'controversial' scenes of brutality, does not get into the blame-game business. The stories and incidents are known, but Sinha deftly handles sensitive issues of the pandemic that leave a defining mark on the viewer.

Bheed is not to be missed at any cost. It is gut-wrenching, and brings back horrific memories but still an important film of our times.

Bheed review: Anubhav Sinha shows the grim side of Incredible India

For Dia Mirza, her work as an actor, producer, eco-entrepreneur and the UN Secretary General's Advocate for Sustainable Development Goals, coalesces around the passion to serve a higher purpose and somehow impact the world in a positive way. She says, "As a mother, I feel compelled more than ever to amplify urgent environmental causes like climate change because the clock is ticking and unless we work hard collectively to reverse its impact, we will pass on to our children an unsustainable and unhealthy planet."

Dia cites the Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, which was a collective commitment to improve health and education markers, reduce inequality, spur economic growth, protect and preserve oceans and forests while countering climate change and says, " Every year, we must do all we can to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). " In 2023 too, she says, her work at the individual and collective level will serve the larger vision of the SDGs.

"Because of COVID-19 and the debilitating after-effects of climate change, the SDGs have suffered many setbacks globally. We need to double up efforts to change that and especially work towards providing inclusive and accessible education to the girl child. In 2023, I am also hoping to put the spotlight on numerous environment champions across India and its heartlands. People like Dr Anil Prakash Joshi from Dehradun with his innovative concept of GEP (Gross Environmental Product) which assesses monetary value of the quality and quantity of resources from the forest, air, water and soil and is one of the components of green GDP," she adds.

As an eco-investor, Dia has already committed resources and energy to green brands like Beco, Shumee, Greendigo, and Allter and will also be on the lookout for more individuals and companies that are creating sustainable solutions and need a little help. She says, "We need to start looking at a more sustainable lifestyle as the norm and not the exception anymore. And to do that, more such green brands need to come into the mainstream. As an investor, my goal is to work towards that ideal."

As a producer and an actor, Dia says, her work will continue to address questions about gender, social and economic inequities, the right to education, to a healthy environment and a lot more. She concludes, "There is a thread of intentionality in everything I do so now I want to tell stories that can be powerful agents of change at some level and can generate ripples of positivity and inspire a sense of purpose in those who watch them."

R Madhavan, Dia Mirza's romantic drama 'Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein' turns 21

Indian actress Dia Mirza recently brushed off the attention around her pregnancy and second marriage and claimed that when it comes to women's rights, "we are in the dark ages." In her recent interview, she alluded to recent developments in the US, where arguments over abortion policy have been raging for decades and claimed that many people have "regressive thoughts" regarding premarital sex and pregnancy.

In February 2021, Dia married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi, and in April she announced her pregnancy. In her recent interview with the Times of India, she claimed that many people are against the idea of premarital sex and premarital pregnancy, and that "there are enough people who recognise the fact that it is a personal choice." She lamented the fact that people weren't as forward-thinking as they might have thought they were.

While discussing women's rights, she said, "Look at the kind of crimes that continue to be committed against women," and remarked on recent events in America, where "women can’t go through abortion if they want." She expressed her relief that "at least in India," the legislation upholds the rights of women.

Dia in her response to an Instagram user’s comment on her pregnancy announcement post who questioned the timing of her marriage said, "Interesting question. Firstly, we didn’t marry because we were having a baby together. We were already marrying as we wanted to spend our lives together. We discovered we were going to have a baby while we were planning our wedding. So this marriage is not the result of pregnancy. We didn’t announce the pregnancy until we knew its safe (medical reasons). This is the happiest news of my life. I’ve waited for many many years for this to happen. No way I would hide it for any reason other than medical."

Dia will be next seen in 'Bheed' being directed by Anubhav Sinha with whom she had worked in the past in films like 'Cash', 'Dus', and 'Thappad.' Mirza will also be seen in another film titled 'Dhak Dhak,' starring Ratna Pathak Shah, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Sanjana Sanghi. Taapsee Pannu turns producer with a road adventure flick 'Dhak Dhak', shares first look

As her son, Avyaan Azaad, turned one on Saturday, actor Dia Mirza penned an emotional note, recalling how the little one fought severe health conditions. "Our Jaan, our miracle, you were born on this day one year ago with the song Imagine playing. You were three months premature at 820 grams.''

''Thirty-six hours after birth we discovered you had necrotizing enterocolitis and had to go through life-saving surgery. You were cared for and nourished in the NICU with a stoma for 90 days and finally sent home to us with a stoma," Dia wrote, in an Instagram post.

She added, "After you had gained strength and weight you went back to hospital for a second surgery that lasted four and half hours. The doctors prepared us for the worst and said it would take a minimum of 21 days before you could be back home with us."

Dia also revealed that Avyaan's first word was `Tiger`. "Avyaan Azaad, you were ready to be home with us on day 9 our warrior. Your grace, your strength, your determination to fight the odds is so inspiring. Our son, you are now catching up on all your milestones, are happy, playful and loving. You fill our heart with joy and gratitude every single day. We are amazed and amused that your first spoken word is - Tiger," she posted.

As her son, Avyaan Azaad, turned one on Saturday, actor Dia Mirza penned an emotional note, recalling how the little one fought severe health conditions. "Our Jaan, our miracle, you were born on this day one year ago with the song Imagine playing. You were three months premature at 820 grams.'' ''Thirty-six hours after birth we discovered you had necrotizing enterocolitis and had to go through life-saving surgery. You were cared for and nourished in the NICU with a stoma for 90 days and finally sent home to us with a stoma," Dia wrote, in an Instagram post. She added, "After you had gained strength and weight you went back to hospital for a second surgery that lasted four and half hours. The doctors prepared us for the worst and said it would take a minimum of 21 days before you could be back home with us." Dia also revealed that Avyaan's first word was `Tiger`. This World Elephant Day, Dia Mirza took to her Instagram to talk about the adorable animals which must be protected and cared for deeply. She remembers fondly her visit with some playful and naughty rescued elephants who kept trying to untie her laces! Adorable. Dia wrote about the importance of protecting forests and natural habitats, to maintain an equilibrium for the rest of the creatures we share our planet Earth with. Talking about the familial bonds seen in elephants, she described them as gentle, soft and empathetic creatures. World Elephant Day: Dia Mirza recalls first meet with the gentle giants

International Tiger Day is a global celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation and is held annually on July 29. Actor, producer and champion for nature, Dia Mirza is acutely aware of the connection between habitat preservation and tiger conservation and since 2018, has planted over 8313 trees in tiger habitats including Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, Ramtek in Maharashtra and Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal.

In 2016, she also directed and produced # KidsForTigers, a Public Service film on International Tiger Day, to involve the future generation in conservation initiatives.

Dia says, “We need to do more than just exchange platitudes about this magnificent and endangered big cat because its habitats continue to shrink and the global tiger population seems to be in perpetual decline. It is heartening that in India, the tiger population has grown but because of human-animal conflict, this success story is at peril. We do not seem to understand that continuous threats to wildlife habitats will undermine any conservation work for tigers.

This year’s theme, “Their survival is in our hands” could not be more relevant. It is time to be part of the solution and actually save our national animal and to understand that we cannot save the tiger without saving our diverse forests. Without protecting biodiversity ranging from tigers to termites, butterflies to bears, we cannot in the end protect ourselves as a race."

Dia Mirza has been a vocal advocate for wildlife and environment for decades. Be it adopting two leopard cubs in 2010, speaking up for snow leopards or leading the movement against single-use plastics to protect marine life, she has tried to shift perceptions and spread awareness about issues that do not get enough attention. She says, “Obstruction of forest corridors, incessant mining activities, rampant deforestation are making it impossible for tigers to co-exist with humankind. That is why I work with tireless change makers like Bittu Sehgal who has founded Sanctuary Nature Foundation, a nonprofit conservation organization that, among other things, also does habitat management.”

In compliance with her eco-sensitive ideology, Dia also eschews the practice of giving meaningless gifts and instead plants trees via social organisation Grow-Trees.com. Says Dia, “ Tiger is an apex predator and a metaphor for all Nature and for that resaon among many others, we must secure our forests and ensure that animal corridors between habitats are not disconnected. Let us please also remember that tiger forests are the birthing grounds for over 300 rivers in India and so their protection is linked to our survival."

Over the years Dia has also travelled to wildlife habitats including the Pench Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra to see first hand how the restoration of water sources and natural vegetation helps tigers and other wild animals to thrive. She concludes, “Highways at the expense of trees, settlements within protected zones, and non-inclusive development are all self-defeating in the end. It is time to dial back this greed and not advance it."
It is time to stop exchanging platitudes and save our national animal: Dia Mirza on International Tiger Day

Actress Dia Mirza and partner Vaibhav Rekhi have announced the birth of their son, Avyaan Azaad Rekhi. In a deeply personal and emotional social media post, Dia shared that the little one was born on May 14 and is currently gaining strength in a neonatal ICU.

Dia wrote, "To paraphrase Elizabeth Stone, 'To have a child is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body'. These words perfectly exemplify Vaibhav & my feelings right now. Our heartbeat, our son Avyaan Azaad Rekhi was born on May 14th. Having arrived early, our little miracle has since then been cared for by tireless nurses and doctors in the Neonatal ICU.

"A sudden appendectomy during my pregnancy and a subsequent and very severe bacterial infection could have led to sepsis and proven to be life threatening. Thankfully, the timely care and intervention by our doctor ensured the safe birth of our baby via an emergency C-section.

As we watch this tiny being, this Zen master in awe and wonder, we learn from him, in all humility, the true meaning of trusting the universe and of parenthood. And to not be afraid, and so we humbly take the lead from his resilience and courage. We do not have enough words to thank all those who continue to help us live this story of hope and faith and create a safe, healing, nurturing space for Avyaan and I. He will be home soon and his elder sister Samaira and grand parents are waiting to hold him in their arms.

To our well-wishers and fans, I just want to say - your concern has always meant a lot to me and if it was possible to share this news before, we would have. Thank you all for all the love, light, faith and prayers. We extend them back to everyone who is struggling to hold on to hope right now or is praying for a loved one.

Dia Mirza, Vaibhav Rekhi announce birth of their son in an emotional post

Actor Dia Mirza spoke about ‘sexism’ in Bollywood as she admitted that her 2001 hit film ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’ has sexist elements. It was her debut film.

Dia spoke about living in a patriarchal society and the prevalence of 'rampant sexism' in an industry that is 'largely led by men'. She said, "People were writing, thinking and making sexist cinema and I was a part of these stories... Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein has sexism in it... I was acting with these people. I was working with these people. It's crazy. I will give you small examples. A makeup artist could only be a man, could not be a woman. A hairdresser only had to be a woman... When I started working in films there were at best about four or five women on any given crew with a unit strength of over 120... sometimes 180 people.”

"We live in a patriarchal society and it is an industry largely led by men. So there is a rampant sexism. And I think for a large part it is not even conscious sexism because there are so many men who are writers, who are directors, who are actors, who are not even aware of their sexist thinking," she added.

Dia first started in the glam world with her winning the Miss Asia Pacific crown in 2000. She then made her way to movies.

Dia and husband Vaibhav Rekhi tied the knot earlier this year and are currently expecting their first child.

Dia Mirza announces pregnancy with an adorable post

This is a first for an Indian celebrity. The couple had a registry wedding as well as a Hindu wedding on Monday.
Dia shared glimpses of her wedding on Tuesday and several of her fans noted that how a woman had solemnised the wedding instead of a priest - which is usually the norm in Hindu weddings in India.
This is a first for an Indian celebrity. As Bollywood star Dia Mirza tied the knot with businessman Vaibhav Rekhi on February 15, the rituals were performed by a priestess. The couple had a registry wedding as well as a Hindu wedding on Monday. Dia shared glimpses of her wedding on Tuesday and several of her fans noted that how a woman had solemnised the wedding instead of a priest - which is usually the norm in Hindu weddings in India. On Wednesday, Dia took to Twitter and thanked priestess Sheela Atta for conducting the holy ceremony. Dia shared, “Thank you Sheela Atta for conducting our wedding ceremony. So proud that together we can #RiseUp #GenerationEquality”. Thank you Sheela Atta for conducting our wedding ceremony. So proud that together we can #RiseUp #GenerationEquality https://t.co/aMZdyEZRdF pic.twitter.com/BeyFWCSGLw — Dia Mirza (@deespeak) February 17, 2021 × The internet also had words of appreciation for Dia and Vaibhav for breaking away from the norm. The wedding was an intimate affair with only close family and friends in attendance. Actress Aditi Rao Hydari and Jackky Bhagnani were the only ones present at the ceremony from Bollywood. Dia had earlier shared the photos of her wedding with the caption, “Love is a full-circle that we call home. And what a miracle it is to hear its knock, open the door and be found by it. Sharing this moment of completion and joy with you..my extended family. May all puzzles find their missing pieces, may all hearts heal and may the miracle of love continue to unfold all around us #ThankYouPreeta #SunsetKeDiVaNe.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dia Mirza (@diamirzaofficial) ×
